Abstract
A sample grating distributed feedback quantum cascade laser array aim at broad tunability and enhanced side mode suppression ratios is presented. Utilizing a sample grating dependence on emission wavelength and epitaxial side down bonding technique, the array of laser ridges exhibited three separated single mode emissions centered at 4.760, 4.721, and 4.711 μm respectively, in continuous wave at room temperature. Side mode suppression ratios of >35 dB and continuous wave output powers of >10 mW per laser ridge were obtained.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammation plays a role in the pathophysiology of depression and that anti-inflammatory substances have antidepressant effects. Amycenone is obtained from extracts of the Yamabushitake (Hericium erinaceum). The purpose of this study is to examine whether amycenone shows anti-inflammatory and antidepressant effects in an inflammation-induced mouse model of depression. First, we examined the effects of amycenone on the serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 (IL-10), after intraperitoneal administration of the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Oral administration of amycenone (50, 100, or 200mg/kg) markedly blocked an increase in the serum TNF-α levels after a single administration of LPS (0.5mg/kg). Furthermore, amycenone (200mg/kg) markedly increased the serum IL-10 levels by a single administration of LPS (0.5mg/kg). Next, we examined the effects of amycenone on depression-like behaviors in the tail-suspension test (TST) and forced swimming test (FST). Pretreatment with amycenone (200mg/kg) significantly attenuated LPS (0.5mg/kg)-induced increase of the immobility time by the TST and FST, indicating antidepressant effects of amycenone. In addition, oral administration of paroxetine (30mg/kg) showed anti-inflammatory and antidepressant effects in the same model. These findings suggest that amycenone has antidepressant effects in LPS-induced inflammation model of depression. Therefore, amycenone could represent a potential supplement to prevent inflammation-related depression.

Abstract
La-doped p-type ZnO nanofibers were successfully synthesized by electrospinning, followed by calcination. The microstructure and morphology of the La-doped ZnO nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The field effect curve of individual nanofibers confirms that the resulting La-doped ZnO fibers are p-type semiconductors. The doping mechanism is discussed. Furthermore, crossed p-n homojunction nanofibers were also prepared based on electrospun La-doped p-type ZnO and n-type pure ZnO fibers. The current-voltage curve shows the typical rectifying characteristic of a p-n homojunction device. The turn-on voltage appears at about 2.5 V under the forward bias and the reverse current is impassable.

Abstract
We present here a study on the electrical conduction properties of individual polypyrrole nanobelts by using conductive atomic force microscopy and discuss a general effect while probing soft materials. A length-dependent analysis demonstrates that the tip could induce local defects into the polymer structure and, thus diminishes the electrical conduction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), signaling represent potential therapeutic targets for major depressive disorder. The purpose of this study is to examine whether TrkB ligands show antidepressant effects in an inflammation-induced model of depression. METHODS In this study, we examined the effects of TrkB agonist 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) and TrkB antagonist ANA-12 on depression-like behavior and morphological changes in mice previously exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Protein levels of BDNF, phospho-TrkB (p-TrkB), and TrkB in the brain regions were also examined. RESULTS LPS caused a reduction of BDNF in the CA3 and dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (PFC), whereas LPS increased BDNF in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Dexamethason suppression tests showed hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in LPS-treated mice. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of 7,8-DHF showed antidepressant effects on LPS-induced depression-like behavior, and i.p. pretreatment with ANA-12 blocked its antidepressant effects. Surprisingly, ANA-12 alone showed antidepressant-like effects on LPS-induced depression-like behavior. Furthermore, bilateral infusion of ANA-12 into the NAc showed antidepressant effects. Moreover, LPS caused a reduction of spine density in the CA3, DG, and PFC, whereas LPS increased spine density in the NAc. Interestingly, 7,8-DHF significantly attenuated LPS-induced reduction of p-TrkB and spine densities in the CA3, DG, and PFC, whereas ANA-12 significantly attenuated LPS-induced increases of p-TrkB and spine density in the NAc. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that LPS-induced inflammation may cause depression-like behavior by altering BDNF and spine density in the CA3, DG, PFC, and NAc, which may be involved in the antidepressant effects of 7,8-DHF and ANA-12, respectively.

Abstract
Administration or expression of growth factors, as well as implantation of autologous
bone marrow cells, promote in vivo angiogenesis. This study
investigated the angiogenic potential of combining both approaches through the
allogenic transplantation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)
expressing human basic fibroblast growth factor (hbFGF). After establishing a hind
limb ischemia model in Sprague Dawley rats, the animals were randomly divided into
four treatment groups: MSCs expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP-MSC), MSCs
expressing hbFGF (hbFGF-MSC), MSC controls, and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)
controls. After 2 weeks, MSC survival and differentiation, hbFGF and vascular
endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, and microvessel density of ischemic
muscles were determined. Stable hbFGF expression was observed in the hbFGF-MSC group
after 2 weeks. More hbFGF-MSCs than GFP-MSCs survived and differentiated into
vascular endothelial cells (P<0.001); however, their differentiation rates were
similar. Moreover, allogenic transplantation of hbFGF-MSCs increased VEGF expression
(P=0.008) and microvessel density (P<0.001). Transplantation of hbFGF-expressing
MSCs promoted angiogenesis in an in vivo hind limb ischemia model by
increasing the survival of transplanted cells that subsequently differentiated into
vascular endothelial cells. This study showed the therapeutic potential of combining
cell-based therapy with gene therapy to treat ischemic disease.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of chronic periodontitis on dental pulps by assessing histological changes in the pulps of teeth with moderate-to-severe periodontitis. METHODOLOGY A total of 242 teeth from 162 patients with moderate-to-severe periodontitis were collected, and histological changes in pulps were investigated by staining with haematoxylin and eosin. Baseline data were taken from the patients' records before extraction. The morphologic changes observed in the pulp were classified as degree I, degree II, degree III and degree IV. Statistical analysis of the severity of periodontitis and histological changes with the pulps was applied using the Mann-Whitney U rank sum test, whilst the contingency coefficient was used to analyse the inter-relationship between the severity of periodontitis and histological changes in the pulps. RESULTS The inter-relationship between the severity of periodontitis and histological changes in the pulps was 0.274 (P < 0.001), and significant differences existed between teeth with moderate periodontitis and severe periodontitis group (Z = 4.145, P < 0.001). The inter-relationship between attachment loss and histological changes in the pulps was 0.397 (P < 0.001). There were significant differences in the histological changes amongst teeth with various degrees of attachment loss (χ(2) = 33.023, P < 0.001) and amongst teeth in different locations (χ(2) = 23.163, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive association between the severity of periodontitis and histological changes within the pulp. More attachment loss was correlated with pathological changes within the dental pulp.

Abstract
Single crystals of K0.8Fe2-yMnySe2 with slight Mn doping have been grown by a self-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurements show enhanced phase separation with increasing Mn doping in the compounds. The superconducting transition temperature increases to Tc,onset ∼ 46.1 K for the sample with y ∼ 0.03, as observed by electrical transport measurements. Our results demonstrate that the doping of Mn does not suppress the superconductivity, and on the contrary increases the superconducting shield fraction and transition temperature, an effect which may originate from the Mn dopant's high preference to fill into iron vacancies in the Mn-doped samples. It suggests that the Mn dopant can induce a local lattice strain or distortion that profitably modifies the microstructure of the superconducting/metallic phase, leading to superconductivity of the compound.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate relationships between serum levels of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) and clinical and metabolic variables in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS A total of 513 patients (286 males/227 females) provided clinical and lifestyle data and blood and urine samples for analysis. Patients were stratified into four quartile groups according to serum RBP4 concentrations. RESULTS RBP4 concentration was independently associated with gender, systolic blood pressure, serum triglyceride and creatinine levels, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Hypertension, dyslipidaemia, micro albuminuria and impaired eGFR (<60 ml/min per 1.73 m2) were significantly more prevalent in patients with the highest RBP4 levels than in those with the lowest levels. Increased serum RBP4 was associated with increased risk of hypertension, dyslipidaemia, micro albuminuria and impaired eGFR after adjusting for gender, age, body mass index and duration of diabetes. CONCLUSION Serum RBP4 may be a useful marker of overall metabolic control in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
IL-17-producing CD8(+) T lymphocytes (Tc17 cells) have recently been detected in many cancers and autoimmune diseases. However, the possible implication of Tc17 cells in tuberculous pleural effusion remains unclarified. In this study, distribution and phenotypic features of Tc17 cells in both tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) and peripheral blood from patients with tuberculosis were determined. The effects of proinflammatory cytokines and local accessory cells (pleural mesothelial cells) on Tc17 cell expansion were also explored. We found that TPE contained more Tc17 cells than the blood. Compared with IFN-γ-producing CD8(+) T cells, Tc17 cells displayed higher expression of chemokine receptors (CCRs) and lower expression of cytotoxic molecules. In particularly, Tc17 cells in TPE exhibited high expression levels of CCR6, which could migrate in response to CCL20. Furthermore, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-23, or their various combinations could promote Tc17 cell expansion from CD8(+) T cells, whereas the proliferative response of Tc17 cells to above cytokines was lower than that of Th17 cells. Pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) were able to stimulate Tc17 cell expansion via cell contact in an IL-1β/IL-6/IL-23 independent fashion. Thus this study demonstrates that Tc17 cells marks a subset of non-cytotoxic, CCR6(+) CD8(+) T lymphocytes with low proliferative capacity. The overrepresentation of Tc17 cells in TPE may be due to Tc17 cell expansion stimulated by pleural proinflammatory cytokines and to recruitment of Tc17 cells from peripheral blood. Additionally, PMCs may promote the production of IL-17 by CD8(+) T cells at sites of TPE via cell-cell interactions.

Abstract
In this paper, we will present the design and preliminary performance of an ultrahigh resolution stationary MR compatible SPECT (MRC-SPECT) system that is developed in our lab. The MRC-SPECT system is based on the second-generation energy-resolved photon-counting (ERPC) CdTe detectors and there are several key features associated with this system. Firstly, up to a total of twenty ERPC detectors will be assembled as a very compact ring, which provides an adequate angular sampling capability and a relatively high detection efficiency. The detectors are supported on a gantry made of high strength polyamide structure constructed using 3-D printing. This compact system can be directly operated inside an MR scanner. The detector module used in this system offers an intrinsic resolution of 350μm and an excellent energy resolution of around 3~4kev. Each ERPC detector module consists of four pixelated CdTe detectors with a total dimension of 4.5cm×2.25cm. Secondly, a die-cast platinum pinhole inserts and cast lead apertures are developed for this stationary SPECT system. Four 300/500μm diameter pinholes are used for each detector and all pinholes are mounted around a casted cylinder lead aperture tube. The inner diameter of the lead aperture tube is 6cm and the lead tube thickness is 16mm. The opposite detectors are placed 15.6cm apart and the magnification factor of this SPECT system is about 1.2. Thirdly, a comprehensive charge collection model inside strong magnetic field has been developed to account for the magnetic field induced distortion in the SPECT image. This model can accurately predict the detector's energy and spatial response to gamma ray incident events and then help to compensate for the event position recording error due to the strong magnetic field. In this development, we have made an effort to minimize the amount of magnetic materials in the system to alleviate potential interference to magnetic field inhomogeneity.

Abstract
RATIONALE Methamphetamine (METH) is a powerfully addictive stimulant associated with serious health conditions. Accumulating evidence suggests a role of oxidative stress in METH-induced behavioral abnormalities. Sulforaphane (SFN), found in cruciferous vegetables, is a potent antioxidant. It is of interest to determine whether SFN can attenuate behavioral and neuropathological changes associated with METH exposure. OBJECTIVES This study was undertaken to examine the effects of SFN on behavioral changes and dopaminergic neurotoxicity in mice exposed to METH. METHODS The effects of SFN on acute hyperlocomotion and the development of behavioral sensitization induced by the administration of METH were examined. Levels of dopamine (DA) and its major metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid (DOPAC) in the striatum were measured. In addition, DA transporter (DAT) immunoreactivity was also performed. RESULTS Pretreatment with SFN at 1, 3, and 10 mg/kg elicited a dose-dependent attenuation of acute hyperlocomotion in mice, after a single administration of METH (3 mg/kg). The development of behavioral sensitization after repeated administrations of METH (3 mg/kg/day, once daily for 5 days) was significantly reduced by pretreatment with SFN (10 mg/kg). In addition, the lowering of DA levels and DOPAC as well as DAT immunoreactivity in the striatum, usually seen after repeated administration of METH, was significantly attenuated by both pretreatment and the subsequent administration of SFN. Furthermore, SFN significantly reduced microglial activation in the striatum after repeated exposure to METH. CONCLUSION It is therefore likely that SFN can be a useful drug for the treatment of signs associated with METH abuse in humans.

Abstract
Glycine transporter-1 (GlyT-1) in glial cells regulates extracellular levels of glycine, which acts as an obligatory co-agonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the brain. In the present study, we developed a novel radioligand, [³H]3-chloro-N-((S)-((R)-1-methylpiperidin-2-yl)(thiophen- 3-yl)methyl)-4- (trifluoromethyl)picolinamide ([³H]CHIBA-3007), for studying GlyT-1 in the brain. The presence of a single saturable high-affinity binding component for [³H]CHIBA-3007 binding to the rat brain membranes was detected. Scatchard analysis revealed an apparent equilibrium dissociation constant (K(d)) of 1.61±0.16 nM and a maximal number of binding sites (B(max)) of 692.8±22.8 fmol/mg protein (mean ± SEM, n = 3). The specific binding of [³H]CHIBA-3007 was inhibited by a number of GlyT-1 inhibitors, such as CHIBA-3007, desmethyl-CHIBA-3007, CHIBA-3008, SSR504734, NFPS/ALX5407, LY2365109 and Org24598, consistent with the pharmacological profiles of GlyT-1 inhibitors. Interestingly, the potency of eight GlyT-1 inhibitors (CHIBA-3007, desmethyl-CHIBA-3007, NFPS/ALX5407, LY2365109, Org24598, SSR504734, sarcosine, and glycine) for blocking in vitro specific binding of [³H]CHIBA-3007 was significantly correlated with the potency of these inhibitors for inhibiting [¹⁴C]glycine uptake in the rat brain membranes. In contrast, the GlyT-2 inhibitor ALX1393 exhibited very weak for [³H]CHIBA-3007 binding. Furthermore, the regional distribution of [³H]CHIBA-3007 binding in the rat brain was similar to the previously reported distribution of GlyT-1. The present findings suggest that [³H]CHIBA-3007 would be a useful new radioligand for studying GlyT-1 in the brain.

Abstract
Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are a family of ligand-gated ion channels which are widely distributed in the human brain. Several lines of evidence suggest that two major subtypes (α4β2 and α7) of nAChRs play an important role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Postmortem studies demonstrated alterations in the density of these subtypes of nAChRs in the brain of patients with AD. Currently, nAChRs are one of the most attractive therapeutic targets for AD. Therefore, several researchers have made an effort to develop novel radioligands that can be used to study quantitatively the distribution of these two subtypes in the human brain with positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In this paper, we discuss the current topics on in vivo imaging of two subtypes of nAChRs in the brain of patients with AD.

Abstract
A flyer-impact technique, different from the explosive method of [Sakharov et al., Sov. Phys. Dokl. 9, 1091 (1965)], is developed to investigate the viscosity of shocked metals. The shock wave with a front of sinusoidal perturbation is induced by the sinusoidal profile of the impact surface of the sample by use of two-stage light-gas gun. The oscillatory damping process of the perturbation amplitude is monitored by electric pins. Two damping curves (perturbation amplitude relative to its initial value versus propagated distance relative to the wavelength of sinusoidal perturbation) of aluminum are determined at 78 and 101 GPa. The effective shear viscosity coefficients are deduced to be about 1300 and 800 Pa s based on the Miller and Ahrens analytic solution for viscous fluid.

Abstract
A facile method for the fabrication of dendritic gold nanoparticles (NPs) by use of an ionic polymer template has been developed. In situ generation of an imidazolium-based (cationic) polymer, poly[1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl)imidazolium], with AuCl4- counteranions is achieved by addition of HAuCl4 into a solution containing poly[1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl)imidazolium chloride]. Subsequent reduction with NaBH4 in water or in a mixture of ethanol and water affords various NPs depending on the conditions, including large dendritic gold NPs that have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The structures of the dendritic gold NPs were found to depend on the ethanol concentration. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the ionic polymer reveal that the solvent used to deposit the polymer strongly influences its structure and may be correlated to the structure of the resulting NPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To introduce the surgical procedure and indication of the reverse fascial pedicle island flap of the digital artery dorsal branches in repairing finger skin defect. METHODS By use of the dorsal branches of the digital artery as the pedicel, the reverse island flap was designed. The skin defects of the proximal interphalangeal joint and beyond in 35 cases (42 fingers) were repaired and the joint or extensor tendon was reconstructed simultaneously. Donor site was primarily closed or a skin graft was used. The flap size ranged from 1.0 cm x 2.5 cm to 1.5 cm x 3.5 cm. RESULTS Thirty-five patients were followed up 3 months to 1 year, all the flaps survived. The two-point discrimination was between 6 mm and 10 mm. The function of interphalangeal joint was satisfactory. CONCLUSION These flaps have the advantages of an extended skin paddle and a versatile pivot point on the phalanx, and they allow coverage of wide and distal defects.

Abstract
GaN nanotip triangle pyramids were synthesized on 3C-SiC epilayer via an isoelectronic In-doping technique. The synthesis was carried out in a specially designed two-hot-boat chemical vapor deposition system. In (99.999%) and molten Ga (99.99%) with a mass ratio of about 1:4 were used as the source, and pieces of Si (111) wafer covered with 400-500 nm 3C-SiC epilayer were used as the substrates. The products were analyzed by x-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. Our results show that the as-synthesized GaN pyramids are perfect single crystal with wurtzite structure, which may have potential applications in electronic/photonic devices.

Abstract
AIM To establish a simple, rapid, and accurate electrochemical method for on-line determination of isoniazid. METHODS Based on the flow injection biamperometry for irreversible couple system, and using two preanodized platinum electrodes with the applied potential difference of 0 V, the biamperometric method for the determination of isoniazid has been proposed by coupling the catalytic oxidation of isoniazid and the reduction of platinum oxide. RESULTS Common excipients, inorganic ions, amino acids, vitamins and proteins do not interfere with the determination. Linear relationship between current and the concentration of isoniazid is obtained in the range of 1.0 x 10(-6)-1.0 x 10(-4) mol.L-1 (gamma = 0.998, n = 11). The RSD of 1.8% was obtained for 8 successive determinations of 1.0 x 10(-5) mol.L-1 isoniazid. CONCLUSION The proposed method has been shown to be sensitive, selective, rapid (120 samples.h-1), and suitable for the on-line direct determination of isoniazid.
