Test of Lepton Universality in b→sℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} Decays. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:051803. Abstract
The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using B^{+}→K^{+}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} and B^{0}→K^{*0}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, q^{2}. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q^{2} interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Wang QR, Ma T, Hu J, Yang J, Kang PD. Comparison between ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group block and anterio quadratus lumborum block for total hip arthroplasty: a double-blind, randomized controlled trial. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2023; 27:7523-7532. [PMID: 37667929 DOI: 10.26355/eurrev_202308_33404] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 09/06/2023]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE Peripheral nerve block can provide effective postoperative analgesia to patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to compare ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block against anterior quadratus lumborum (AQL) block for pain management in primary THA. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 90 patients undergoing primary THA under general anesthesia were randomly allocated to receive ultrasound-guided PENG block + sham AQL block ("PENG group") or ultrasound-guided AQL block + sham PENG block ("AQL" group). The primary outcome was the highest pain score on a visual analogue scale while the patient was in the recovery room. Secondary outcomes included pain scores after transfer out of the recovery room, morphine consumption, quadricep strength, duration of hospitalization, pain level one year after surgery, and incidence of complications. RESULTS Patients in the PENG group reported significantly lower maximum pain scores in the recovery room (31.3±9.1 vs. 37.3±7.4, p=0.001), as well as significantly lower pain scores at rest at 3 h after surgery and during motion at 3 and 6 h after surgery. The two groups did not differ significantly in postoperative morphine consumption, length of hospitalization, pain level at one year after surgery, or incidence of complications. Neither block significantly weakened the quadriceps. CONCLUSIONS PENG block may provide slightly more effective postoperative analgesia than AQL block during the early recovery period after primary THA.

Abstract
A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B^{0}→D[over ¯]^{0}D_{s}^{+}π^{-} and B^{+}→D^{-}D_{s}^{+}π^{+}, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020 GeV and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.013 GeV are observed, which decay to D_{s}^{+}π^{+} and D_{s}^{+}π^{-} respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [cs[over ¯]ud[over ¯]], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [cs[over ¯]u[over ¯]d] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0^{+}, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

Search for Rare Decays of D^{0} Mesons into Two Muons. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:041804. Abstract
A search for the very rare D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. The search is optimized for D^{0} mesons from D^{*+}→D^{0}π^{+} decays but is also sensitive to D^{0} mesons from other sources. No evidence for an excess of events over the expected background is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay is set at B(D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-})<3.1×10^{-9} at a 90% C.L. This represents the world's most stringent limit, constraining models of physics beyond the standard model.

Abstract
An amplitude analysis of B^{-}→J/ψΛp[over ¯] decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. A narrow resonance in the J/ψΛ system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.2±0.7±0.4 MeV and 7.0±1.2±1.3 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The spin is determined to be 1/2 and negative parity is preferred. Because of the small Q-value of the reaction, the most precise single measurement of the B^{-} mass to date, 5279.44±0.05±0.07 MeV, is obtained.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of acetylcorynoline (Ace) for promoting functional recovery of injured spinal cord in rats and explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS Rat models of spinal cord injury (SCI) were treated with intraperitoneal injection of different concentrations of Ace, with the sham-operated rats as the control group. After the treatment, the changes in motor function of the rats and the area of spinal cord injury were assessed with BBB score and HE staining, and the changes in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels and microglial activation were determined using PCR, ELISA and immunofluorescence staining. In a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated BV2 cell model, the effects of different concentrations of Ace or DMSO on microglial activation and inflammatory cytokine production were observed. Network pharmacology analysis was performed to predict the target protein and signaling mechanism that mediated the inhibitory effect of Ace on microglia activation, and AutoDock software was used for molecular docking between Ace and the target protein. A signaling pathway blocker (Osimertinib) was used to verify the signaling mechanism in rat models of SCI and LPS-treated BV2 cell model. RESULTS In rat models of SCI, Ace treatment significantly increased the BBB score, reduced the area of spinal cord injury, and lowered the number of activated microglia cells and the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (P < 0.05). The cell experiments showed that Ace treatment significantly lower the level of cell activation and the production of inflammatory cytokines in LPS-treated BV2 cells (P < 0.05). Network pharmacology analysis suggested that EGFR was the main target of Ace, and they bound to each other via hydrogen bonds as shown by molecular docking. Western blotting confirmed that Ace inhibited the activation of the EGFR/MAPK signaling pathway in injured mouse spinal cord tissue and in LPS-treated BV2 cells, and its inhibitory effect was comparable to that of Osimertinib. CONCLUSION In rat models of SCI, treatment with Ace can inhibit microglia-mediated inflammatory response by regulating the EGFR/MAPK pathway, thus promoting tissue repair and motor function recovery.

Abstract
Purpose Broken stick analysis is a widely used approach for detecting unknown breakpoints where association between measurements is non-linear. We propose LIMBARE, an advanced li near m ixed-effects b reakpoint a nalysis with r obust e stimation, especially designed for longitudinal ophthalmic studies. LIMBARE accommodates repeated measurements from both eyes and overtime, and effectively address the presence of outliers. Methods The model setup of LIMBARE and computing algorithm for point and confidence interval estimates of the breakpoint was introduced. The performance of LIMBARE and other competing methods was assessed via comprehensive simulation studies and application to a longitudinal ophthalmic study with 216 eyes (145 subjects) followed for an average of 3.7±1.3 years to examine the longitudinal association between structural and functional measurements. Results In simulation studies, LIMBARE showed the smallest bias and mean squared error (MSE) for estimating the breakpoint, with empirical coverage probability of corresponding CI estimate closest to the nominal level for scenarios with and without outlier data points. In the application to the longitudinal ophthalmic study, LIMBARE detected two breakpoints between visual field mean deviation (MD) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) and one breakpoint between MD and cup to disc ratio (CDR), while the cross-sectional analysis approach only detected one and none, respectively. Conclusions LIMBARE enhances breakpoint estimation accuracy in longitudinal ophthalmic studies, while cross-sectional analysis approach is not recommended for future studies. Translational Relevance Our proposed method and companion software R package provides a valuable computational tool for advancing longitudinal ophthalmology research and exploring the association relationships between ophthalmic variables.

Abstract
The Brillouin instability (BI) caused by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can limit the output power of high-energy laser amplifiers. Pseudo-random bitstream (PRBS) phase modulation is an effective modulation technique to suppress BI. In this paper, we study the impact of the PRBS order and modulation frequency on the BI threshold for different Brillouin linewidths. PRBS phase modulation with a higher order will break the power into a larger number of frequency tones with a lower maximum power in each tone, leading to a higher BI threshold and a smaller tone spacing. However, the BI threshold may saturate when the tone spacing in the power spectra approaches the Brillouin linewidth. For a given Brillouin linewidth, our results allow us to determine the order of PRBS beyond which there is no further improvement in the threshold. When a specific threshold power is desired, the minimum PRBS order required decreases as the Brillouin linewidth increases. When the PRBS order is too large, the BI threshold deteriorates, and this deterioration occurs at smaller PRBS orders as the Brillouin linewidth increases. We investigate the dependence of the optimal PRBS order on the averaging time and fiber length, and we did not find a significant dependence. We also derive a simple equation that relates the BI threshold for different PRBS orders. Hence, the increase in BI threshold using an arbitrary order PRBS phase modulation may be predicted using the BI threshold from a lower PRBS order, which is computationally less time-consuming to compute.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous iron supplementation in patients with recurrent iron deficiency anemia (IDA) . Methods: This retrospective analysis of 90 patients with recurrent IDA from May 2012 to December 2021 was conducted, comparing the efficacy and safety of the intravenous iron therapy group and the oral iron therapy group. Results: Among the 90 patients with recurrent IDA, 20 were males and 70 were females, with a median age of 40 (range: 14-85) years. A total of 60 patients received intravenous iron supplementation and 30 received oral iron supplementation. The hematologic response rates in the intravenous iron group were significantly higher than those in the oral iron group at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment [80.0% (48/60) vs 3.3% (1/30) and 96.7% (58/60) vs 46.7% (14/30), all P<0.001, respectively]. The median increase in hemoglobin levels was also significantly higher in the intravenous iron group than in the oral iron group [38 (4, 66) g/L vs 7 (1, 22) g/L at week 4 and 44.5 (18, 80) g/L vs 19 (3, 53) g/L at week 8, all P<0.001]. The intravenous iron group had a significantly higher proportion of patients who achieved normal hemoglobin levels than the oral iron group (55.0% vs 0 and 90% vs 43.3%, all P<0.001, respectively). Iron metabolism indicators were tested before and after 8 weeks of treatment in 26 and 7 patients in the intravenous and oral iron groups, respectively. The median increase in serum ferritin (SF) levels in the intravenous iron group 8 weeks after treatment was 113.7 (49.7, 413.5) μg/L, and 54% (14/26) of these patients had SF levels of ≥100 μg/L, which was significantly higher than the median increase in SF levels in the oral iron group [14.0 (5.8, 84.2) μg/L, t=4.760, P<0.001] and the proportion of patients with SF levels of ≥100 μg/L (P=0.013). The incidence of adverse reactions was 3.3% (2/60) in the intravenous iron group, which was significantly lower than that in the oral iron group [20.0% (6/30), P=0.015]. Conclusion: Intravenous iron supplementation is more effective for hematologic response, faster hemoglobin increase, and higher iron storage replenishment rates compared with oral iron supplementation in patients with recurrent IDA, and it is well tolerated by patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Endovascular treatment is a reference treatment for acute basilar artery occlusion (ABAO). However, no established and specific methods are available for the preoperative screening of patients with ABAO suitable for endovascular treatment. This study explores the potential value of DWI-based radiomics in predicting the functional outcomes of endovascular treatment in ABAO. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with ABAO treated with endovascular treatment from the BASILAR registry (91 patients in the training cohort) and the hospitals in the Northwest of China (31 patients for the external testing cohort) were included in this study. The Mann-Whitney U test, random forests algorithm, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were used to reduce the feature dimension. A machine learning model was developed on the basis of the training cohort to predict the prognosis of endovascular treatment. The performance of the model was evaluated on the independent external testing cohort. RESULTS A subset of radiomics features (n = 6) was used to predict the functional outcomes in patients with ABAO. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the radiomics model were 0.870 and 0.781 in the training cohort and testing cohort, respectively. The accuracy of the radiomics model was 77.4%, with a sensitivity of 78.9%, specificity of 75%, positive predictive value of 83.3%, and negative predictive value of 69.2% in the testing cohort. CONCLUSIONS DWI-based radiomics can predict the prognosis of endovascular treatment in patients with ABAO, hence allowing a potentially better selection of patients who are most likely to benefit from this treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the expression of hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase like 2 (HSDL2) in rectal cancer tissues and the effect of changes in HSDL2 expression level on proliferation of rectal cancer cells. METHODS Clinical data and tissue samples of 90 patients with rectal cancer admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to June 2022 were collected from the prospective clinical database and biological specimen database. The expression level of HSDL2 in rectal cancer and adjacent tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry, and based on the median level of HSDL2 expression, the patients were divided into high expression group (n=45) and low expression group (n=45) for analysis the correlation between HSDL2 expression level and the clinicopathological parameters. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to explore the role of HSDL2 in rectal cancer progression. The effects of changes in HSDL2 expression levels on rectal cancer cell proliferation, cell cycle and protein expressions were investigated in SW480 cells with lentivirus-mediated HSDL2 silencing or HSDL2 overexpression using CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry and Western blotting. RESULTS The expressions of HSDL2 and Ki67 were significantly higher in rectal cancer tissues than in the adjacent tissues (P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that the expression of HSDL2 protein was positively correlated with Ki67, CEA and CA19-9 expressions (P < 0.01). The rectal cancer patients with high HSDL2 expressions had significantly higher likelihood of having CEA ≥5 μg/L, CA19-9 ≥37 kU/L, T3-4 stage, and N2-3 stage than those with a low HSDL2 expression (P < 0.05). GO and KEGG analysis showed that HSDL2 was mainly enriched in DNA replication and cell cycle. In SW480 cells, HSDL2 overexpression significantly promoted cell proliferation, increased cell percentage in S phase, and enhanced the expression levels of CDK6 and cyclinD1 (P < 0.05), and HSDL2 silencing produced the opposite effects (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The high expression of HSDL2 in rectal cancer participates in malignant progression of the tumor by promoting the proliferation and cell cycle progress of the cancer cells.

Abstract
PURPOSE The effects of calorie restriction (CR) on gut microbiota and the mechanism of CR ameliorating hyperglycemia in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T2DM model rats were explored. METHODS High-fat diet and STZ injection were applied to induce T2DM model rats. Rats were divided into the following three groups: the control-diet ad libitum group, the T2DM model group fed with ad libitum diet, and the T2DM group fed with 30% restriction diet. 16S rRNA sequencing was used to determine the bacterial communities. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding protein (LBP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured. RESULTS Glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity were improved by CR, as well as the levels of fasting and random plasma glucose. Besides, CR not only modulated the overall structure of gut microbiota but also had selective enrichment in anti-inflammatory bacteria such as Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Ruminococcaceae_9, Allobaculum, Alistipes, and Oscillibacter, and decreased pro-inflammatory pathogenic bacteria such as Bacteroides, Lachnoclostridium, and Bifidobacterium. Tax4Fun indicated that CR could regulate related functional pathways such as lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, and the plasma levels of LBP, IL-6, and TNF-α were markedly reduced by CR, suggesting the mechanism of CR ameliorating hyperglycemia may associate with the modulation of disordered gut microbiota and the reduction of metabolic endotoxemia and inflammation. CONCLUSION CR could ameliorate hyperglycemia, the mechanism of which may associate with the alteration of the overall structure of gut microbiota, restoration of disordered microbiota function, and the downregulation of metabolic endotoxemia and inflammation in diabetic rats.

Abstract
Failure of palatogenesis results in cleft palate, one of the most common congenital disabilities in humans. During the final phases of palatogenesis, the protective function of the peridermal cell layer must be eliminated for the medial edge epithelia to adhere properly, which is a prerequisite for the successful fusion of the secondary palate. However, a deeper understanding of the role and fate of the periderm in palatal adherence and fusion has been hampered due to a lack of appropriate periderm-specific genetic tools to examine this cell type in vivo. Here we used the cytokeratin-6A (Krt-6a) locus to develop both constitutive (Krt6ai-Cre) and inducible (Krt6ai-CreERT2) periderm-specific Cre driver mouse lines. These novel lines allowed us to achieve both the spatial and temporal control needed to dissect the periderm fate on a cellular resolution during palatogenesis. Our studies suggest that, already before the opposing palatal shelves contact each other, at least some palatal periderm cells start to gradually lose their squamous periderm-like phenotype and dedifferentiate into cuboidal cells, reminiscent of the basal epithelial cells seen in the palatal midline seam. Moreover, we show that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling plays a critical periderm-specific role in palatogenesis. Thirty-three percent of embryos lacking a gene encoding the TGF-β type I receptor (Tgfbr1) in the periderm display a complete cleft of the secondary palate. Our subsequent experiments demonstrated that Tgfbr1-deficient periderm fails to undergo appropriate dedifferentiation. These studies define the periderm cell fate during palatogenesis and reveal a novel, critical role for TGF-β signaling in periderm dedifferentiation, which is a prerequisite for appropriate palatal epithelial adhesion and fusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aneurysmal bone cysts are expansile benign lesions associated with compressive destruction and obscure pathogenesis. The most common sites of temporal bone involvement are the petrous apex, squamous portions and mastoid. CASE REPORT This paper reports a right temporal aneurysmal bone cyst in a 51-year-old man who presented clinically with facial palsy, and hearing loss and impaired vestibular function. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography findings were consistent with a diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst. Inter-operative findings showed that the lesion had caused compressive damage to the internal auditory canal. Following surgical excision, the patient experienced vertigo, indicating recovery of vestibular function. Follow-up imaging revealed complete resection without clinical recurrence. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first report of aneurysmal bone cyst invasion of the inner auditory canal. Our clinical experience indicates that vestibular nerve damage recovery is relatively uncommon. This case report will hopefully inform future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is critical to assess implementation fidelity of evidence-based interventions and factors moderating fidelity, to understand the reasons for their success or failure. However, fidelity and fidelity moderators are seldom systematically reported. The study objective was to conduct a concurrent implementation fidelity evaluation and examine fidelity moderators of CHORD (Community Health Outreach to Reduce Diabetes), a pragmatic, cluster-randomized, controlled trial to test the impact of a Community Health Workers (CHW)-led health coaching intervention to prevent incident type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in New York (NY). METHODS We applied the Conceptual Framework for Implementation Fidelity to assess implementation fidelity and factors moderating it across the four core intervention components: patient goal setting, education topic coaching, primary care (PC) visits, and referrals to address social determinants of health (SDH), using descriptive statistics and regression models. PC patients with prediabetes receiving care from safety-net patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) at either, VA NY Harbor or at Bellevue Hospital (BH) were eligible to be randomized into the CHW-led CHORD intervention or usual care. Among 559 patients randomized and enrolled in the intervention group, 79.4% completed the intake survey and were included in the analytic sample for fidelity assessment. Fidelity was measured as coverage, content adherence and frequency of each core component, and the moderators assessed were implementation site and patient activation measure. RESULTS Content adherence was high for three components with nearly 80.0% of patients setting ≥ 1 goal, having ≥ 1 PC visit and receiving ≥ 1 education session. Only 45.0% patients received ≥ 1 SDH referral. After adjusting for patient gender, language, race, ethnicity, and age, the implementation site moderated adherence to goal setting (77.4% BH vs. 87.7% VA), educational coaching (78.9% BH vs. 88.3% VA), number of successful CHW-patient encounters (6 BH vs 4 VA) and percent of patients receiving all four components (41.1% BH vs. 25.7% VA). CONCLUSIONS The fidelity to the four CHORD intervention components differed between the two implementation sites, demonstrating the challenges in implementing complex evidence-based interventions in different settings. Our findings underscore the importance of measuring implementation fidelity in contextualizing the outcomes of randomized trials of complex multi-site behavioral interventions. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov on 30/12/2016 and the registration number is NCT03006666 .

Abstract
Ultraviolet photodetectors (UV PDs) have always been the research focus of semiconductor optoelectronic devices due to their wide application fields and diverse compositions. As one of the best-known n-type metal oxides in third-generation semiconductor electronic devices, ZnO nanostructures and their assembly with other materials have received extensive research. In this paper, the research progress of different types of ZnO UV PDs is reviewed, and the effects of different nanostructures on ZnO UV PDs are summarized in detail. In addition, physical effects such as piezoelectric photoelectric effect, pyroelectric effect, and three ways of heterojunction, noble metal local surface plasmon resonance enhancement and formation of ternary metal oxides on the performance of ZnO UV PDs were also investigated. The applications of these PDs in UV sensing, wearable devices, and optical communication are displayed. Finally, the possible opportunities and challenges for the future development of ZnO UV PDs are prospected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes of CD5L levels in patients with candidemia and explore the role of CD5L in progression of candidemia. METHODS Twenty healthy control individuals, 27 patients with bacteremia and 35 patients with candidemia were examined for serum CD5L levels using ELISA, and the correlations of CD5L level with other serological indicators were analyzed. A C57BL/6 mouse model of candidemia induced by intravenous injection of Candida albicans were treated with intraperitoneal injection of recombinant CD5L protein, and renal histopathological and serological changes were analyzed to assess renal injures. The effects of CD5L treatment on general condition, fungal burden, of survival of the mice were observed, and the changes in serum IL-6 and IL-8 levels of the mice were detected using ELISA. RESULTS CD5L levels were significantly elevated in patients with candidemia and positively correlated with WBC, BDG, Scr and PCT levels. The mouse model of candidemia also showed significantly increased serum and renal CD5L levels, and CD5L treatment significantly increased fungal burden in the renal tissue, elevated IL-6 and IL-8 levels in the serum and kidney, aggravated renal tissue damage, and reduced survival rate of candidemia mice. CONCLUSION Serum CD5L levels are increased in patients with candidemia, and treatment with CD5L aggravates candidemia in mouse models.
