Abstract
The exploitation of interface effects turned out to be a powerful tool for generating exciting material properties. Such properties include magnetism, electronic and ionic transport and even superconductivity. Here, instead of using conventional homogeneous doping to enhance the hole concentration in lanthanum cuprate and achieve superconductivity, we replace single LaO planes with SrO dopant planes using atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (two-dimensional doping). Electron spectroscopy and microscopy, conductivity measurements and zinc tomography reveal such negatively charged interfaces to induce layer-dependent superconductivity (Tc up to 35 K) in the space-charge zone at the side of the planes facing the substrate, where the strontium (Sr) profile is abrupt. Owing to the growth conditions, the other side exhibits instead a Sr redistribution resulting in superconductivity due to conventional doping. The present study represents a successful example of two-dimensional doping of superconducting oxide systems and demonstrates its power in this field. Introduction of higher-dimensional structure elements into solids is used to generate unusual materials properties. Here, the authors report how replacing LaO planes with SrO dopants yields space-charge induced superconductivity, showing the potential of two-dimensional doping in this field.

Abstract
BiFeO3 is investigated intensively, mainly as a multiferroic material. In this paper, the state-of-the-art ab initio hybrid functional approach with atomic basis sets was employed for a study of the stability range of BiFeO3 with respect to its decomposition into binary oxides and elementary metals, as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The calculated atomic and electronic structure of BiFeO3 was compared with previous LDA+U calculations using plane-wave basis sets. Based on performed calculations, the phase diagram was constructed, which allows us to predict the stability region of stoichiometric BiFeO3.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study describes bone mass changes during pregnancy and lactation measured by a special ultrasound method. Pregnant women showed a decrease of bone mass followed by a stable bone mass while breast-feeding afterwards. Later in life, there is a recovery of bone mass loss. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate bone changes during pregnancy using the radiation-free method of quantitative ultrasonometry (QUS). METHODS One hundred twenty-five pregnant women who underwent prenatal care were included in this study. Ultrasound measurement of the calcaneus was performed in each trimester and then 6 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year postpartum. The calcaneal QUS measurements were carried out using the Achilles plus device (GE/Lunar Corporation, Madison, WI). Three ultrasound variables were measured: speed of sound (SOS, m/s), broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA, dB/MHz), and the "stiffness index" (expressed as the percentage of the mean value in young adults). SOS and BUA raw data result in the t-score and z-score. RESULTS A complete panel of six measurements was acquired over the time period in 101 patients (80.8%). Forty-two percent of the included patients were primipara, while 58% had given birth to at least one child (47%) previously. There was a statistically significant change of the t-score (tv = 2.14, p = 0.035) and the stiffness index (tv = 2.46, p = 0.016) from the second to the third trimester, followed by a plateau during lactation. Interestingly, the t-score remained stable during lactation, regardless of the duration of lactation (<3 months, 3-6 months, and >6 months). CONCLUSIONS Young primiparas who had a sedentary adolescence were at the highest risk of bone loss during pregnancy. Bone loss that occurred during pregnancy was typically recovered later on, based on unknown molecular and biochemical mechanisms that must be elucidated with further studies.

Abstract
This contribution is concerned with the control parameters for arriving at defined, electrochemically relevant materials. The treatment is precise as far as the equilibrium situation of simple crystals is concerned, but becomes more and more qualitative if the distance from equilibrium or the (structural or compositional) complexity increases. It proves useful to distinguish between in situ parameters and ex situ parameters, the number ratio of which decreases with increasing distance from equilibrium. A particularly complex situation is met if not only size, shape and phase distribution are important, but even morphological details are of relevance, as it is the case for modern battery electrodes (“electrochemical integrated circuits”). For such cases archetypical examples along with their advantages or disadvantages for electrochemical storage properties are discussed. In this context, special emphasis is placed upon the dimensionality and distribution topology of building elements.

Abstract
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are under intensive investigation since the 1980's as these devices open the way for ecologically clean direct conversion of the chemical energy into electricity, avoiding the efficiency limitation by Carnot's cycle for thermochemical conversion. However, the practical development of SOFC faces a number of unresolved fundamental problems, in particular concerning the kinetics of the electrode reactions, especially oxygen reduction reaction. We review recent experimental and theoretical achievements in the current understanding of the cathode performance by exploring and comparing mostly three materials: (La,Sr)MnO3 (LSM), (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 (LSCF) and (Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 (BSCF). Special attention is paid to a critical evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of BSCF, which shows the best cathode kinetics known so far for oxides. We demonstrate that it is the combined experimental and theoretical analysis of all major elementary steps of the oxygen reduction reaction which allows us to predict the rate determining steps for a given material under specific operational conditions and thus control and improve SOFC performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In open reduction and volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures, the pronator quadratus (PQ) muscle is usually detached at the radial edge of the distal radius. Repair of the muscle is reasonable for coverage of the plate and to maintain normal pronation of the forearm. However, repair of the muscle is not always satisfactory. In this study, the topographic relationship of both the PQ and the brachioradialis muscle (BR) insertions are investigated with regard to optimising the repair of the PQ in open reduction and volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve forearm pairs fixed in formalin were examined. The muscular boundaries of the PQ and the insertion of the BR were dissected, photographs were taken and measured digitally. RESULTS The average distance of the PQ insertion was 4.75 cm. Distally, a close topographic relationship exists between the insertions of both the PQ and BR. A fascial connection of both muscles was detected in all specimens. The average distance of the common insertion was 1.75 cm. After removal of the PQ fascia, 0.85 cm of common insertion remained. In 25 % a muscular connection between both the PQ and BR was detected after removal of the PQ fascia. CONCLUSION Both the PQ and BR have a common connective tissue and partially a common muscular insertion. Detaching the PQ insertion with a part of the BR insertion in open reduction and volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures can presumably lead to a more stable repair of the PQ in contrast to a repair within the muscle.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop a phantom and measurement protocol for quantifying spatial accuracy of an MR imaging system over its entire imaging volume. METHODS The measurement protocol is comprised of a phantom, a set of MR sequence parameters for imaging the phantom, and analysis software for calculating spatial errors in the acquired phantom images. The phantom covers the entire imaging volume of the scanner above the patient table. It consists of layers of tooling foam which does not produce any detectable signal on conventional MR images, embedded with a matrix of oil capsules to serve as markers. To account for possible spatial errors in the construction of the phantom, the phantom was imaged with CT to create a gold standard data set. On MR scanners, the phantom is acquired with a 3D FGRE sequence that covers an extended FOV of 61.44 mm and with bandwidth = ±62.5 kHz. Error measurements are performed by detecting markers in the image sets and identifying them based on their known locations on the phantom. The spatial error of a marker is defined as the difference between its locations on the MR and CT image sets. RESULTS The phantom was constructed and the measurement protocol was executed on two different MR scanners. Some markers were located in areas of severe field inhomogeneity or gradient nonlinearity, and could not be adequately detected for analysis. Maximum errors over concentric spherical regions were observed by plotting the error of each marker as a function of their distance from isocenter. CONCLUSION The proposed phantom and protocol can be an effective tool for verifying the spatial accuracy of an MR system, which in turn can improve the accuracy and confidence of MR guided therapies. Data from this protocol may also be used in the development of advanced distortion correction algorithms. Employed by General Electric Healthcare.
