Local adsorption structure and bonding of porphine on Cu(111) before and after self-metalation

We have experimentally determined the lateral registry and geometric structure of free-base porphine (2H-P) and copper-metalated porphine (Cu-P) adsorbed on Cu(111), by means of energy-scanned photoelectron diffraction (PhD), and compared the experimental results to density functional theory (DFT) calculations that included van der Waals corrections within the Tkatchenko-Scheffler approach. Both 2H-P and Cu-P adsorb with their center above a surface bridge site. Consistency is obtained between the experimental and DFT-predicted structural models, with a characteristic change in the corrugation of the four N atoms of the molecule's macrocycle following metalation. Interestingly, comparison with previously published data for cobalt porphine adsorbed on the same surface evidences a distinct increase in the average height of the N atoms above the surface through the series 2H-P, Cu-P, and cobalt porphine. Such an increase strikingly anti-correlates the DFT-predicted adsorption strength, with 2H-P having the smallest adsorption height despite the weakest calculated adsorption energy. In addition, our findings suggest that for these macrocyclic compounds, substrate-to-molecule charge transfer and adsorption strength may not be univocally correlated.

Amphiphilic diblock copolymer-mediated structure control in nanoporous germanium-based thin films

Fabrication of porous, foam-like germanium-based (Ge-based) nanostructures is achieved with the use of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer polystyrene-b-polyethylene oxide as structure directing agent. Basic concepts of block copolymer assisted sol-gel synthesis are successfully realized based on the [Ge9]4- Zintl clusters as a precursor for Ge-based thin films. Material/elemental composition and crystalline Ge-based phases are investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements, respectively. Poor-good solvent pair induced phase separation leads to pore sizes in the Ge-based films up to 40 nm, which can be tuned through a change of the molar mixing ratio between polymer template and precursor as proven by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy.

Assembly of Robust Holmium-Directed 2D Metal-Organic Coordination Complexes and Networks on the Ag(100) Surface

We describe the formation of lanthanide-organic coordination networks and complexes under ultra-high-vacuum conditions on a clean Ag(100) surface. The structures comprise single Ho atoms as coordination centers and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (from terephtalic acid, TPA) as molecular linkers. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we find two different chiral phases of surface-supported metal-organic structures incorporating Ho atoms. Density functional theory calculations can explain the structure of both binding motifs and give possible reasons for their varying formation under the respective Ho/TPA ratios, as well as deposition and annealing temperatures. Metal-ligand interactions drive the formation of cloverleaf-shaped mononuclear Ho-TPA₄ complexes establishing supramolecular arrays stabilized through hydrogen bonding. A 2D lanthanide-organic reticulation is observed when changing the stoichiometry between the two building blocks. The combined insights from scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory reveal the relative stability, charge transfer, and bonding environment of both motifs.

Unraveling the Oxidation and Spin State of Mn-Corrole through X-ray Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Analysis

The interplay between Mn ions and corrole ligands gives rise to complex scenarios regarding the metal centers' electronic properties expressing a range of high oxidation states and spin configurations. The resulting potential of Mn-corroles for applications such as catalysts or fuel cells has recently been demonstrated. However, despite being crucial for their functionality, the electronic structure of Mn-corroles is often hardly accessible with traditional techniques and thus is still under debate, especially under interfacial conditions. Here, we unravel the electronic ground state of the prototypical Mn-5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole complex through X-ray spectroscopic investigations of ultrapure thin films and quantum chemical analysis. The theory-based interpretation of Mn photoemission and absorption fine structure spectra (3s and 2p and L_2,3-edge, respectively) evidence a Mn(III) oxidation state with an S = 2 high-spin configuration. By referencing density functional theory calculations with the experiments, we lay the basis for extending our approach to the characterization of complex interfaces.

Ho-Mediated Alkyne Reactions at Low Temperatures on Ag(111)

Low-temperature approaches to catalytic conversions promise efficiency, selectivity, and sustainable processes. Control over certain coupling reactions can be obtained via the pre-positioning of reactive moieties by self-assembly. However, in the striving field of on-surface synthesis atomistic precision and control remains largely elusive, because the employed coupling reactions proceed at temperatures beyond the thermal stability of the supramolecular templates. Here, utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate terminal alkyne on-surface reactions mediated by Ho atoms at a weakly reactive Ag(111) substrate at low-temperatures. Density functional theory calculations confirm the catalytic activity of the involved adatoms. Pre-deposited Ho induces alkyne dehydrogenation starting at substrate temperatures as low as 100 K. Ho arriving at molecularly pre-covered surfaces held at 130 and 200 K produces covalent enyne-linked dimers and initiates cyclotrimerization, respectively. Statistical product analysis indicates a two-step pathway for the latter, whereby the enyne intermediates influence the distribution of the products. High chemoselectivity results from the absence of cyclotetramerization and diyne-forming homocoupling. Our analysis indicates that mainly the arriving Ho adatoms enable the coupling. These findings support the concept of dynamic heterogeneity by single-atom catalysts and pave the way for alternative means to control on-surface reactions.

Absolute timing of the photoelectric effect

Photoemission spectroscopy is central to understanding the inner workings of condensed matter, from simple metals and semiconductors to complex materials such as Mott insulators and superconductors¹. Most state-of-the-art knowledge about such solids stems from spectroscopic investigations, and use of subfemtosecond light pulses can provide a time-domain perspective. For example, attosecond (10^-18 seconds) metrology allows electron wave packet creation, transport and scattering to be followed on atomic length scales and on attosecond timescales^2-7. However, previous studies could not disclose the duration of these processes, because the arrival time of the photons was not known with attosecond precision. Here we show that this main source of ambiguity can be overcome by introducing the atomic chronoscope method, which references all measured timings to the moment of light-pulse arrival and therefore provides absolute timing of the processes under scrutiny. Our proof-of-principle experiment reveals that photoemission from the tungsten conduction band can proceed faster than previously anticipated. By contrast, the duration of electron emanation from core states is correctly described by semiclassical modelling. These findings highlight the necessity of treating the origin, initial excitation and transport of electrons in advanced modelling of the attosecond response of solids, and our absolute data provide a benchmark. Starting from a robustly characterized surface, we then extend attosecond spectroscopy towards isolating the emission properties of atomic adsorbates on surfaces and demonstrate that these act as photoemitters with instantaneous response. We also find that the tungsten core-electron timing remains unchanged by the adsorption of less than one monolayer of dielectric atoms, providing a starting point for the exploration of excitation and charge migration in technologically and biologically relevant adsorbate systems.

The self-assembly and metal adatom coordination of a linear bis-tetrazole ligand on Ag(111)

We employ a linear linker molecule consisting of a benzene functionalised with two tetrazole moieties at para positions. Its self-assembly and coordination with the native silver adatoms and codeposited Fe adatoms on a Ag(111) surface under ultra high vacuum conditions are investigated by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We discover a rich spectrum of room-temperature stable Ag and Fe2+ coordination nodes depending on the formation temperature.

Tuning the ease of formation of on-surface metal-adatom coordination polymers featuring diketones

We use pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraketone molecules with substituents of varying bulkiness in the 2,7 positions to probe the generality and versatility of the previously reported on-surface coordination of two diketones with a single metal atom, leading to one-dimensional coordination polymers. Three different low index surfaces of group 11 metals (Cu, Ag and Au) are used to provide both the support and the metal atoms for metal-organic coordination. By real space visualisation with single molecule resolution employing scanning tunnelling microscopy we investigate the molecular self-assembly and show how this can be substantiated with the formation of metal-organic linear and cyclic oligomers, depending on the employed substrate.

Identifying On-Surface Site-Selective Chemical Conversions by Theory-Aided NEXAFS Spectroscopy: The Case of Free-Base Corroles on Ag(111)

We demonstrate here that theory-assisted near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy enables the site-sensitive monitoring of on-surface chemical reactions, thus, providing information not accessible by other techniques. As a prototype example, we have used free-base 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corroles (3H-TpFPC) adsorbed on Ag(111) and present a detailed investigation of the angle-dependent NEXAFS of this molecular species as well as of their thermally induced derivatives. For this, we have recorded experimental C and N K-edge NEXAFS spectra and interpret them based on XAS cross-section calculations by using a continuous fraction approach and core-hole including multiprojector PAW pseudopotentials within DFT. We have characterized the as-deposited low temperature (200 K) phase and unraveled the subsequent changes induced by dehydrogenation (at 330 K) and ring-closure reactions (at 430 K). By exemplarily obtaining profound insight into the on-surface chemistry of free-base corrolic species adsorbed on a noble metal this work highlights how angle-dependent XAS combined with accurate theoretical modeling can serve for the investigation of on-surface reactions, whereby even highly similar molecular structures, such as tautomers and isomers, can be distinguished.

Device-Compatible Chiroptical Surfaces through Self-Assembly of Enantiopure Allenes

Chiroptical methods have been proven to be superior compared to their achiral counterparts for the structural elucidation of many compounds. To expand the use of chiroptical systems to everyday applications, the development of functional materials exhibiting intense chiroptical responses is essential. Particularly, tailored and robust interfaces compatible with standard device operation conditions are required. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of chiral allenes and their use for the functionalization of gold surfaces. The self-assembly results in a monolayer-thin room-temperature-stable upstanding chiral architecture as ascertained by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. Moreover, these nanostructures anchored to device-compatible substrates feature intense chiroptical second harmonic generation. Both straightforward preparation of the device-compatible interfaces along with their chiroptical nature provide major prospects for everyday applications.

Functionalized Graphdiyne Nanowires: On-Surface Synthesis and Assessment of Band Structure, Flexibility, and Information Storage Potential

Carbon nanomaterials exhibit extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties desirable for future technologies. Beyond the popular sp² -scaffolds, there is growing interest in their graphdiyne-related counterparts incorporating both sp² and sp bonding in a regular scheme. Herein, we introduce carbonitrile-functionalized graphdiyne nanowires, as a novel conjugated, one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterial systematically combining the virtues of covalent coupling and supramolecular concepts that are fabricated by on-surface synthesis. Specifically, a terphenylene backbone is extended with reactive terminal alkyne and polar carbonitrile (CN) moieties providing the required functionalities. It is demonstrated that the CN functionalization enables highly selective alkyne homocoupling forming polymer strands and gives rise to mutual lateral attraction entailing room-temperature stable double-stranded assemblies. By exploiting the templating effect of the vicinal Ag(455) surface, 40 nm long semiconducting nanowires are obtained and the first experimental assessment of their electronic band structure is achieved by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicating an effective mass below 0.1m₀ for the top of the highest occupied band. Via molecular manipulation it is showcased that the novel oligomer exhibits extreme mechanical flexibility and opens unexplored ways of information encoding in clearly distinguishable CN-phenyl trans-cis species. Thus, conformational data storage with density of 0.36 bit nm^-2 and temperature stability beyond 150 K comes in reach.

Lanthanide-Directed Assembly of Interfacial Coordination Architectures-From Complex Networks to Functional Nanosystems

Metallo-supramolecular engineering on surfaces provides a powerful strategy toward low-dimensional coordination architectures with prospects for several application fields. To date, most efforts have relied on transition metal centers, and only recently did we pioneer lanthanide-directed assembly. Coordination spheres and motifs with rare-earth elements generally display distinct properties and structural features. The size of the cations and shielding role of the 4f orbitals induces high coordination numbers, frequently entailing flexible coordination geometries. Following Pearson's hard and soft acid-base theory, lanthanide cations are hard Lewis acids and thus feature strong affinity for nitrile, terpyridine, and carboxylate donor moieties. The prevailing oxidation state is +3, although in certain compounds stable +2 or +4 cations occur. The chemistry of rare-earth elements is currently receiving widespread attention, as they are key ingredients for established and emerging 21st century science and technology with relevance for energy conversion, sensing, catalysis, magnetism, photonics, telecommunications, superconductivity, biomedicine, and quantum engineering. In this Account, we review recent advances toward the design of interfacial supramolecular nanoarchitectures incorporating lanthanide centers. We apply controlled ultrahigh vacuum conditions whereby atomistically clean substrates are prepared and exposed to ultrapure atomic and molecular beams of the chosen sublimable constituents. We focus on direct molecular-level investigations and in situ assembly operative close to equilibrium conditions. Our scanning probe microscopy techniques provide atomistic insights regarding the formation, stability, and manipulability of metal-organic compounds and networks. In order to gain deeper insights into the experimental findings, complementary computational analysis of bond characteristics, electronic properties, and coordination motifs has been performed for several case studies. Exemplary elements under consideration include cerium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and europium. By the use of ditopic molecular linkers equipped with carbonitrile moieties, adaptive coordination spheres are unveiled, yielding vertices with two- to sixfold symmetry. The respective coordination nodes underlie the expression of complex networks, such as semiregular Archimedean tessellations for cerium- or gadolinium-directed assemblies and random-tiling quasicrystalline characteristics for europium. Tunability via constituent stoichiometry regulation is revealed for bimolecular arrangements embedding europium centers, simultaneously connecting to carbonitrile and terypyridine ligands. Ditopic carboxylate linkers yield robust reticular networks based on a lateral coordination number of 8 for either gadolinium or dysprosium complexation, featuring a prevalent ionic nature of the coordination bond. Orthogonal insertion protocols give rise to d-f reticular architectures exploiting macrocyclic tetradentate cobalt complexation and peripheral carbonitrile-gadolinium coordination, respectively. Furthermore, lanthanides may afford metalation of adsorbed free-base tetrapyrrole species and can be engaged for interfacial synthesis of sandwich compounds, thus providing prospects for columnar design of coordination architectures. Finally, direct manipulation experiments achieved lateral displacement of single supramolecules and molecular rotation of sandwich or other molecular units. These findings evidence prospects for advancing molecular machinery components. The presented accomplishements herald further advancements in metallo-supramolecular design on surfaces, with versatile nanosystems and architectures emanating from the flexible coordination spheres. The embedding and systematic rationalization of lanthanide centers in tailored interfacial environments are keys to establishing relations between structure and physicochemical characteristics toward the generation of novel functionalities with technological significance.

Complex supramolecular interfacial tessellation through convergent multi-step reaction of a dissymmetric simple organic precursor

Interfacial supramolecular self-assembly represents a powerful tool for constructing regular and quasicrystalline materials. In particular, complex two-dimensional molecular tessellations, such as semi-regular Archimedean tilings with regular polygons, promise unique properties related to their nontrivial structures. However, their formation is challenging, because current methods are largely limited to the direct assembly of precursors, that is, where structure formation relies on molecular interactions without using chemical transformations. Here, we have chosen ethynyl-iodophenanthrene (which features dissymmetry in both geometry and reactivity) as a single starting precursor to generate the rare semi-regular (3.4.6.4) Archimedean tiling with long-range order on an atomically flat substrate through a multi-step reaction. Intriguingly, the individual chemical transformations converge to form a symmetric alkynyl-Ag-alkynyl complex as the new tecton in high yields. Using a combination of microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy tools, as well as computational modelling, we show that in situ generated catalytic Ag complexes mediate the tecton conversion.

Exploration of pyrazine-embedded antiaromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons generated by solution and on-surface azomethine ylide homocoupling

Nanographenes, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with nanoscale dimensions (>1 nm), are atomically precise cutouts from graphene. They represent prime models to enhance the scope of chemical and physical properties of graphene through structural modulation and functionalization. Defined nitrogen doping in nanographenes is particularly attractive due to its potential for increasing the number of π-electrons, with the possibility of introducing localized antiaromatic ring elements. Herein we present azomethine ylide homocoupling as a strategy to afford internally nitrogen-doped, non-planar PAH in solution and planar nanographene on surfaces, with central pyrazine rings. Localized antiaromaticity of the central ring is indicated by optical absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with theoretical calculations. Our strategy opens up methods for chemically tailoring graphene and nanographenes, modified by antiaromatic dopants.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes on close-packed coinage metal surfaces: bis-carbene metal adatom bonding scheme of monolayer films on Au, Ag and Cu

By means of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), complementary density functional theory (DFT) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) we investigate the binding and self-assembly of a saturated molecular layer of model N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. XPS reveals that at room temperature, coverages up to a monolayer exist, with the molecules engaged in metal carbene bonds. On all three surfaces, we resolve similar arrangements, which can be interpreted only in terms of mononuclear M(NHC)2 (M = Cu, Ag, Au) complexes, reminiscent of the paired bonding of thiols to surface gold adatoms. Theoretical investigations for the case of Au unravel the charge distribution of a Au(111) surface covered by Au(NHC)2 and reveal that this is the energetically preferential adsorption configuration.

Corrugation in the Weakly Interacting Hexagonal-BN/Cu(111) System: Structure Determination by Combining Noncontact Atomic Force Microscopy and X-ray Standing Waves

Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers on metallic supports represent a promising platform for the selective adsorption of atoms, clusters, and molecular nanostructures. Specifically, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies revealed an electronic corrugation of h-BN/Cu(111), guiding the self-assembly of molecules and their energy level alignment. A detailed characterization of the h-BN/Cu(111) interface including the spacing between the h-BN sheet and its support-elusive to STM measurements-is crucial to rationalize the interfacial interactions within these systems. To this end, we employ complementary techniques including high-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy, STM, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave method, and density functional theory. Our multimethod study yields a comprehensive, quantitative structure determination including the adsorption height and the corrugation of the sp² bonded h-BN layer on Cu(111). Based on the atomic contrast in atomic force microscopy measurements, we derive a measurable-hitherto unrecognized-geometric corrugation of the h-BN monolayer. This experimental approach allows us to spatially resolve minute height variations in low-dimensional nanostructures, thus providing a benchmark for theoretical modeling. Regarding potential applications, e.g., as a template or catalytically active support, the recognition of h-BN on Cu(111) as a weakly bonded and moderately corrugated overlayer is highly relevant.
