Near-infrared photoabsorption by C60 dianions in a storage ring

We present a detailed study of the electronic structure and the stability of C(60) dianions in the gas phase. Monoanions were extracted from a plasma source and converted to dianions by electron transfer in a Na vapor cell. The dianions were then stored in an electrostatic ring, and their near-infrared absorption spectrum was measured by observation of laser induced electron detachment. From the time dependence of the detachment after photon absorption, we conclude that the reaction has contributions from both direct electron tunneling to the continuum and vibrationally assisted tunneling after internal conversion. This implies that the height of the Coulomb barrier confining the attached electrons is at least approximately 1.5 eV. For C(60)(2-) ions in solution electron spin resonance measurements have indicated a singlet ground state, and from the similarity of the absorption spectra we conclude that also the ground state of isolated C(60)(2-) ions is singlet. The observed spectrum corresponds to an electronic transition from a t(1u) lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of C(60) to the t(1g) LUMO+1 level. The electronic levels of the dianion are split due to Jahn-Teller coupling to quadrupole deformations of the molecule, and a main absorption band at 10,723 cm(-1) corresponds to a transition between the Jahn-Teller ground states. Also transitions from pseudorotational states with 200 cm(-1) and (probably) 420 cm(-1) excitation are observed. We argue that a very broad absorption band from about 11,500 cm(-1) to 13,500 cm(-1) consists of transitions to so-called cone states, which are Jahn-Teller states on a higher potential-energy surface, stabilized by a pseudorotational angular momentum barrier. A previously observed, high-lying absorption band for C(60)(-) may also be a transition to a cone state.

Cholinergic potentiation of the meal-related rise in ACTH and cortisol concentrations in men

The present study examined the influence of physostigmine, an acetylcholine esterase inhibitor, on the secretory activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA)--axis under basal (experiment I) and stimulated (experiment II) conditions in young healthy men. In a third experiment, the effect of scopolamine, a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, on HPA secretory activity after physiological stimulation was tested. The experiments started between 09.00 and 10.00 a.m.. After a resting period of 1.5 h, either physostigmine (0.0125 mg per kg body weight soluted in isotonic saline) or placebo (saline) was infused within 15 min. In experiment I subjects (n = 7) remained fasting while in experiment II (n = 18) a standardized lunch was offered after the infusion. Experiment III (n = 7) was designed as experiment II but instead of physostigmine, scopolamine or placebo (0.5 mg) was subcutaneously injected 105 min before the meal. Blood for the determination of ACTH and cortisol was drawn in regular intervals during the experiments. Physostigmine did not change basal ACTH and cortisol secretion per se, excluding activation of basal HPA secretion due to acetylcholineesterase inhibition and its non specific side effects. Meal intake stimulated ACTH and cortisol secretion which was significantly enhanced when physostigmine was administered (p < 0.05). Scopolamine did not influence the meal related ACTH and cortisol secretion. These findings demonstrate that cholinergic neurotransmission is able to increase ACTH and cortisol concentrations in humans. This effect seems to be complementary to other stimulatory neurotransmitter systems, and is functional during stimulated HPA secretory activity and not under basal conditions.

Molecular systematics of the cotton root rot pathogen, Phymatotrichopsis omnivora

Cotton root rot is an important soilborne disease of cotton and numerous dicot plants in the south-western United States and Mexico. The causal organism, Phymatotrichopsis omnivora (= Phymatotrichum omnivorum), is known only as an asexual, holoanamorphic (mitosporic) fungus, and produces conidia resembling those of Botrytis. Although the corticoid basidiomycetes Phanerochaete omnivora (Polyporales) and Sistotrema brinkmannii (Cantharellales; both Agaricomycetes) have been suggested as teleomorphs of Phymatotrichopsis omnivora, phylogenetic analyses of nuclear small- and large-subunit ribosomal DNA and subunit 2 of RNA polymerase II from multiple isolates indicate that it is neither a basidiomycete nor closely related to other species of Botrytis (Sclerotiniaceae, Leotiomycetes). Phymatotrichopsis omnivora is a member of the family Rhizinaceae, Pezizales (Ascomycota: Pezizomycetes) allied to Psilopezia and Rhizina.

Geriatric assessment of older adults with cancer: Baseline data from a 500 patient multicenter study

Background: As the cancer population ages, a brief, comprehensive measure is needed to characterize the “functional age” of a patient, in order to optimize treatment decisions and evaluate outcomes based on factors other than chronological age. A geriatric assessment (GA) evaluates factors other than age that predict morbidity and mortality in older adults. The goals of this study are to describe the results of a GA performed in 500 older adults with cancer from 7 participating institutions and to evaluate the feasibility of completing this assessment in oncology practice. Methods: The GA is comprised of validated measures of functional status, comorbidity, cognition, psychological status, social functioning and support, and nutritional status (Hurria et al, Cancer 2005). The GA was completed prior to the start of a new chemotherapy regimen in patients age ≥ 65 with a solid tumor or lymphoma. Results: 500 patients (mean age 73; range 65–91) completed the GA. The most common tumor types were lung (29%), GI (29%) and breast/gyn (22%) cancer; 57% had stage IV disease. The GA revealed that 41% of patients needed assistance with instrumental activities of daily living despite a mean physician-reported KPS of 85 (range 50–100), 92% had ≥1 comorbid medical conditions (mean 2.5; range 0–9), 95% took ≥ 1 medications (mean 5; range 0–23), 16% had ≥ 1 falls in the past 6 months, 6% had gross cognitive impairment on the Blessed Orientation-Memory-Concentration Test, and 39% had > 5% weight loss in the past 6 months. The mean time to complete the GA was 27 minutes (range 10–80); 94% were satisfied with the GA length and 70% were able to complete the GA without assistance. Multivariate logistic regression identified the following sociodemiographic and disease variables predict the need for assistance with completion of the GA: age ≥ 80 (p=0.02), high school education or less (p<0.01), non-white race (p<0.01), and the presence of metastatic disease (p=0.01). Conclusions: This brief GA is largely self-administered, can be completed by the majority of older patients without assistance, and identifies important deficits and problems that may impact morbidity and mortality. Prospective data are being acquired to identify factors in the GA that predict chemotherapy toxicity in older adults with cancer.

Subcutaneous versus intravenous immunoglobulin in multifocal motor neuropathy: a randomized, single-blinded cross-over trial

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

For treatment of multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), we hypothesized that (i) infusion of equivalent dosages of subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIG) is as effective as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and that (ii) subcutaneous infusion at home is associated with a better quality of life.

METHODS

In a randomized single-blinded cross-over study, nine IVIG responsive patients were allocated to receive either SCIG or IVIG for a period equivalent to three IVIG treatment intervals and, subsequently, crossed over to the other treatment. Primary end-points were (i) dynamometric strength of affected muscles and (ii) the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire.

RESULTS

The two treatments were equally effective, the mean change in muscle strength after SCIG being 3.6% (95% CI -3.6% to 10.9%) vs. 4.3% (-1.3% to 10.0%) after IVIG (P = 0.86). One patient had sustained erythema and oedema at the injection sites for a few weeks. All other adverse effects during SCIG were mild and transient. No differences between treatments of health-related quality of life occurred.

CONCLUSION

In MMN, short-term subcutaneous infusion of immunoglobulin is feasible, safe and as effective as intravenous infusion. Subcutaneous administration is an alternative option that adds flexibility to the treatment schedule.

Regulation of stem cell differentiation by histone methyltransferases and demethylases

The generation of different cell types from stem cells containing identical genetic information and their organization into tissues and organs during development is a highly complex process that requires defined transcriptional programs. Maintenance of such programs is epigenetically regulated and the factors involved in these processes are often essential for development. The activities required for cell-fate decisions are frequently deregulated in human tumors, and the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes is therefore important for understanding both developmental processes and tumorigenesis.

Autophagy regulates selective HMGB1 release in tumor cells that are destined to die

Macroautophagy (hereafter referred to as autophagy) can increase or decrease the amount of cell death in response to various stimuli. To test if autophagy also controls the characteristics associated with dying cells, we studied tumor cell killing by Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR)-targeted diphtheria toxin (DT-EGF). DT-EGF kills epithelial and glioblastoma tumor cells with similar efficiency but by different mechanisms that depend on whether the cells activate autophagy when treated with the drug. Dying cells in which autophagy is induced selectively release the immune modulator HMGB1 without causing lysis of the cell membrane and classical necrosis. Conversely, cells that are killed by DT-EGF where autophagy is blocked, activate caspases but retain HMGB1. These data suggest that it may be feasible to manipulate the immunogenicity of dying cells by increasing or decreasing autophagy.

Movement detection impaired in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared to healthy controls: a cross-sectional case-control study

The purpose of this study was to clarify whether osteoarthritis (OA) patients have a localized or a generalized reduction in proprioception. Twenty one women with knee OA (mean age [SD]: 57.1 [12.0] years) and 29 healthy women (mean age [SD]: 55.3 [10.1] years) had their joint position sense (JPS) and threshold to detection of a passive movement (TDPM) measured in both knees and elbows. JPS was measured as the participant's ability to actively reproduce the position of the elbow and knee joints. TDPM was measured as the participant's ability to recognize a passive motion of the elbow and knee joints. The absolute error (AE) for JPS (i.e., absolute difference in degrees between target and estimated position) and for TDPM (i.e., the difference in degrees at movement start and response when recognizing the movement) was calculated. For TDPM a higher AE (mean [SE]) was found in the involved knees in patients than in the matched knees of healthy participants (AE: 2.41 degrees [0.20 degrees] versus 1.47 degrees [0.14], p=0.001). The same held true for the non-involved knees between OA and healthy subjects (AE: 2.20 degrees [0.20 degrees] versus 1.57 degrees [0.14 degrees], p=0.016). Furthermore TDPM was higher in OA patients' right elbows compared to healthy participants' right elbows (AE: 2.15 degrees [0.20 degrees] versus 1.45 degrees [0.15 degrees], p=0.011). No significant difference between healthy women and OA patients regarding the left elbow for TDPM, or JPS was observed. The present age-controlled, cross-sectional study suggests that there is an increase in threshold to detection of a passive motion in knees and elbows for patients with knee OA. This indicates that OA may be associated with a generalized defect in proprioception with possible implications for the pathogenesis of the joint degeneration.

A compact 7-cell Si-drift detector module for high-count rate X-ray spectroscopy

A new Si-drift detector module for fast X-ray spectroscopy experiments was developed and realized. The Peltier-cooled module comprises a sensor with 7 × 7-mm² active area, an integrated circuit for amplification, shaping and detection, storage, and derandomized readout of signal pulses in parallel, and amplifiers for line driving. The compactness and hexagonal shape of the module with a wrench size of 16mm allow very short distances to the specimen and multi-module arrangements. The power dissipation is 186mW. At a shaper peaking time of 190 ns and an integration time of 450 ns an electronic rms noise of ~11 electrons was achieved. When operated at 7 °C, FWHM line widths around 260 and 460 eV (Cu-K_α) were obtained at low rates and at sum-count rates of 1.7 MHz, respectively. The peak shift is below 1% for a broad range of count rates. At 1.7-MHz sum-count rate the throughput loss amounts to 30%.

Lifetimes of C60(2-) and C70(2-) dianions in a storage ring

C60(2-) and C70(2-) dianions have been produced by electrospray of the monoanions and subsequent electron pickup in a Na vapor cell. The dianions were stored in an electrostatic ring and their decay by electron emission was measured up to 1 s after injection. While C70(2-) ions are stable on this time scale, except for a small fraction of the ions which have been excited by gas collisions, most of the C60(2-) ions decay on a millisecond time scale, with a lifetime depending strongly on their internal temperature. The results can be modeled as decay by electron tunneling through a Coulomb barrier, mainly from thermally populated triplet states about 120 meV above a singlet ground state. At times longer than about 100 ms, the absorption of blackbody radiation plays an important role for the decay of initially cold ions. The tunneling rates obtained from the modeling, combined with WKB estimates of the barrier penetration, give a ground-state energy 200+/-30 meV above the energy of the monoanion plus a free electron and a ground-state lifetime of the order of 20 s.

Assessment of medication safety in the outpatient setting

Background: US Oncology provides the pharmacy and drug infusion support for over 700 medical oncologists and hematologists. As such medication safety is a principle concern for the delivery of quality care. As described earlier, a survey of affiliated practices indicated three areas of concern: 1) no uniform reporting mechanism, 2) no standard double check mechanism, and 3) variable inclusion of medication safety procedures and reporting into practice operations. This report describes the first three years experience and proposals for continuing improvement. Methods: An online reporting tool was made available to all practices. 337 practice sites and 35 practice groups were monitored. The first hour of chemotherapy (1HC) was used as the denominator for all occurrence calculations. All reporting was voluntary. Occurrences were rated as to severity, from 1 (error detected before any steps towards completion) to 7 (error resulting in death of the patient). The occurrences were categorized according to process, either in prescribing, calculation of doses, lab or allergy issues, or matching the mixed dose to the order or in administering a mixed dose. In each circumstance a near miss or failure to double check was determined. The total experience for the network was determined for 2004 and 2005 with projected data for 2006. Results: The 1HC numbers used as denominators are: 2004–534,542: 2005–534,606: 2006 –542,000. Occurrences with error rates were: 2004 –1,723 (0.32%), 2005 –2,467 (0.46%), 2006 –2,653 (0.49%). The percent practices participating were 70%, 83% and 75% for 2004, 2005 and 2006 respectively. When considering only reporting practices the occurrence rates were: 2004 –0.45%, 2005–0.55%, 2006–0.65%. The percent occurrences with temporary or permanent harm to the patient dropped from 19% in 2004 to 16% in 2006. A failure to double check was a contributing factor in 57% in 2004, 42% in 2006. Conclusions: An anonymous reporting mechanism resulted in an increase in occurrence reporting. An education program led to fewer failures to double check and a decrease in events causing harm to patients. Next steps include enhanced feedback to practices and the use of an EHR to improve processes. The malpractice environment in some areas inhibits reporting.

Systematics of the Pezizomycetes--the operculate discomycetes

The Pezizomycetes (order Pezizales) is an early diverging lineage within the Pezizomycotina. A shared derived character, the operculate ascus, supports the Pezizales as monophyletic, although functional opercula have been lost in certain taxa. Phylogenetic relationships within Pezizales were studied using parsimony and Bayesian analyses of partial SSU and LSU rDNA sequences from 100 taxa representing 82 genera and 13 of the 15 families currently recognized. Three primary lineages are identified that more or less correspond to the A, B and C lineages resolved in previous analyses using SSU rDNA: (A) Ascobolaceae and Pezizaceae; (B) Discinaceae-Morchellaceae and Helvellaceae-Tuberaceae; (C) Ascodesmidaceae, Glaziellaceae, Pyronemataceae, Sarcoscyphaceae and Sarcosomataceae. In contrast the monotypic Rhizinaceae and Caloscyphaceae are resolved as two independent lineages. Bayesian analyses support a relationship among Rhizina and two species of Psilopezia (Pyronemataceae). Only lineage C is highly supported. The B and C lineages form a strongly supported monophyletic group. None of these lineages corresponds to earlier proposed suborders. The A and B lineages are supported by certain morphological features (e.g. ascus bluing reaction in iodine, cytology of spores and paraphyses, septal pore structures and excipulum structure); these characters have been subject to homoplasy. Lineage C is the largest and most heterogeneous, and no unifying morphological features support its recognition. The Pyronemataceae, in which almost half of the species in the order are found, is not monophyletic because the Ascodesmidaceae and Glaziellaceae are nested within it. The relationships among all families in the C lineage remain uncertain. The origin of various forms of ascomata, including hypogeous forms (truffles and truffle-like), epigeous cleistothecia, simple reduced apothecia and highly elaborate, stipitate forms (helvelloid and morchelloid), are discussed.

Host cell tropism of equine herpesviruses: glycoprotein D of EHV-1 enables EHV-4 to infect a non-permissive cell line

Equine herpesviruses 1 and 4 (EHV-1 and EHV-4) cause equine respiratory disease worldwide. However, only EHV-1 is a cause of abortion and neurological disease, despite the two viruses having all 76 genes in common. In addition EHV-1 has a broader host range in cell culture than EHV-4, as exemplified by the rabbit kidney (RK) cell line that is permissive for EHV-1, but not for EHV-4. Here we describe that when EHV-4 produced in equine cells was inoculated onto RK cells expressing glycoprotein D of EHV-1 (RKgD1), infection developed as clusters of rounded cells, and this infectivity could be passaged in RKgD1 cells. The progeny virus could also infect single RK cells, consistent with EHV-4 acquiring EHV1 gD from the complementing cell line. No such infection was observed for EHV-4 in RK cells expressing EHV-1 glycoprotein C. The results are consistent with gD homologues being major determinants of host cell tropism and raise the possibility that gD may be a factor in the differential pathogenicity of EHV-1 and EHV-4.

Cavernous hemangioma of the spinal cord - conservative or operative management?

Once believed to be extremely uncommon, due to magnetic resonance imaging cavernous hemangiomas of the spinal cord are detected with increasing frequency. Management of both symptomatic and asymptomatic intramedullary cavernous hamangiomas is therefore of growing importance. However, experience with treatment and follow-up is very limited. In particular, patients with multiple central nervous system cavernous hemangiomas represent a therapeutical dilemma. We present a patient with a ruptured intramedullary and multiple cerebral cavernous hemangiomas and a survey of current knowledge of epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment options. We conclude that the benefit of operative treatment possibly decreases with the number of clinically silent vascular malformations.

Factors affecting postoperative mortality of patients with displaced femoral neck fracture

Displaced femoral neck fractures are known to be associated with high rates of mortality. The purpose of the present study is to investigate pre- and postoperative factors which influence this mortality in a series of 1186 consecutive Danish patients presenting to one hospital's orthopaedic department with Garden type 3-4 fractures. Subsequent mortality data was obtained from the state population register (224 were still alive). The stepwise Cox proportional hazards model was used for multivariate analysis in order to obtain the predictors of postoperative mortality. The median survival of male subjects fell from 5.2 years in an age-matched control population to 1.6 years in the patients. In women survival time fell from 6.6 to 2.8 years. Almost all excess mortality occurred during the first 3 months following hemiarthroplasty. In order of significance, key factors negatively influencing mortality at 3 months were: cardiac complications, dementia, male sex, age, waiting time before operation, stroke and dislocation of the prosthesis and perioperative fracture. Of these, waiting time for surgery and dislocation of the prosthesis could be modified. A number of other studies have confirmed the importance of optimising these factors.

In vitro transposon mutagenesis of an equine herpesvirus 1 genome cloned as a bacterial artificial chromosome

The 150-kbp genome of the alphaherpesvirus equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) strain HVS25A was cloned as a bacterial artificial chromosome (EHV-1 BAC), with mini F plasmid sequences inserted between genes 62 and 63. Transfection of EHV-1 BAC DNA purified from E. coli gave rise to progeny virus that had a similar growth rate and yield in mammalian cell culture to those of parental wild-type EHV-1. Using in vitro mutagenesis with a Mu transposon, a large library of EHV-1 BAC mutants was generated, and sequence analysis indicated that insertions were dispersed randomly across the EHV-1 genome. Following transfections of a pilot sample of mutant EHV-1 BAC DNAs into mammalian cells, no CPE was observable by light microscopy for mutants carrying insertions in genes for the major capsid protein, large tegument protein, glycoprotein K, catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase, or single-stranded DNA-binding protein. Mutants that were able to produce CPE similar to wild-type EHV-1 included those with interruptions in ORFs of several tegument proteins. Analysis of several glycoprotein gene mutants indicated that those carrying insertions near the start of genes encoding glycoproteins E and I were viable, but showed markedly diminished plaque areas. These results were supported by confocal microscopy of transfected or infected cultures. Electron microscopy of cells infected with a gE mutant revealed accumulations of particles within cytoplasmic vesicles, consistent with a partial obstruction of maturation. The transposon library is a resource for comprehensive functional analysis of the HVS25A genome, with multiple mutants available in any of the predicted genes of EHV-1.

The development of an outpatient chemotherapy medication safety program

Background: Through Institute of Medicine publications (To Err is Human) and through the public experience of a major cancer center, chemotherapy safety has been of concern. US Oncology, Inc. (USON) is the nations largest oncology management company, associated with over 900 medical, radiation, gynecologic and pediatric oncologists. In 2004 USON undertook a quality initiative with a principal objective a system-wide approach to medication safety. Methods: Medication safety was identified as a principal concern by a combined clinical/management committee. A questionnaire was prepared for each practice site to differentiate high performing practices in regards to variances from lower performing practices. 8 high performing practices and 8 lower performing practices were physically evaluated by team members. Neither the questionnaire nor onsite evaluation reliably differentiated quality processes. Three issues became apparent: no uniform reporting mechanism, multiple “double-check” interpretations and variable inclusion of medication safety into practice operations. The safety team undertook these first two issues. An online reporting tool was developed. “Double-check” was defined and processes mapped. Results: The team chose 1st hour of chemotherapy as the denominator for medication occurrence reporting. An online reporting tool was developed with now 1 year of experience. 83% of practice sites are reporting, accounting for 445,148 1st hours of chemotherapy. The occurrence rate is 0.66%. Of the total 0.13% is adverse drug reaction, 0.10% is near miss, 0.08% is miscalculation of dose, 0.05% is the wrong dose. Injury to a patient is a very rare event. Conclusions: The development of a culture of quality in an organization with affiliations of national scope is a formidable undertaking. These initial numbers have no comparative measure, as this is self-reporting using a novel denominator. However, there are within the network similar groups for comparison. The challenge continues to be developing a culture of reporting with systematic integration of those reports and quality processes into the fabric of the practice.

CCNU in the treatment of canine epitheliotropic lymphoma

This retrospective study examined the use of CCNU (1-[2-chloroethyl]3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosurea) in 36 dogs with epitheliotropic lymphoma. Thirty-one (86%) dogs had the cutaneous form of disease, and 5 (14%) dogs had the oral form of disease. Nineteen (51%) dogs were treated with other chemotherapeutic agents before receiving CCNU. All dogs had detectable disease at the time CCNU therapy was initiated. Dogs received a median starting CCNU dosage of 70 mg/m2 (range, 50-100 mg/m2). The median number of treatments administered was 3 (range, 1-12 treatments). After the initial treatment, the CCNU dosage was adjusted in 9 of 26 (35%) dogs in which CCNU was continued: 7 had dosage reductions, and 2 had dosage escalations. Twenty-eight of 36 (78%) dogs had a measurable response to CCNU for a median duration of 106 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 75-182). Six dogs (17%) had a complete response, including 5 dogs with the cutaneous form and 1 dog with the oral form. Twenty-two dogs (61%) had a partial response, including 20 dogs with the cutaneous form and 2 dogs with the oral form, for a median duration of 88 days (95% CI, 62-170). Toxicoses after CCNU chemotherapy included myelosuppression in up to 29% of the dogs, gastrointestinal signs in up to 22% of the dogs, and liver enzyme activity increases in up to 86% of the dogs. This study demonstrates that CCNU chemotherapy can be considered a reasonable option for the treatment of canine epitheliotropic lymphoma in dogs.

Neuropsychological functioning and delusions in dementia: a pilot study

The present pilot study investigated the pattern of neuropsychological functioning associated with the presence of delusions in mild-to-moderate dementia. Participants, all of whom met criteria for dementia, were divided into two groups, delusional (n = 9) and non-delusional (n = 9). Individuals with hallucinations were excluded. Participants completed a neuropsychological test battery. Global cognitive functioning (MMSE) and behavioral disturbance (BEHAVE-AD) were also assessed. Differences between the delusional and non-delusional group were most marked for immediate recall of stories, which was higher in the non-delusional group. Scores on semantic fluency, attention (mental control), and overall cognitive functioning (MMSE) were also lower in the delusional group. Conversely, simple attention span (Digit Span) was within normal limits in both groups. Floor effects were noted on measures of delayed recall and alternating attention. This study supports previous findings of greater neuropsychological impairment in delusional as compared to non-delusional individuals with dementia. However, some areas of cognitive functioning may be relatively preserved. Future research should examine semantic processing in persons with dementia with and without delusions.

Stress-induced single-polarization single-transverse mode photonic crystal fiber with low nonlinearity

We report on the design of a single-polarization single-transverse mode large mode area photonic crystal fiber. By including index-matched stress applying elements in the photonic cladding an ultra-broadband single polarization window is obtained while a large mode field area of ~700 microm(2) is maintained. Based on that design, an Yb-doped double-clad photonic crystal fiber is realized that combines low nonlinearity and single polarization properties. A first result of the high power operation using this fiber is demonstrated.

Phylogenetic origins of two cleistothecial fungi, Orbicula parietina and Lasiobolidium orbiculoides, within the operculate discomycetes

Parsimony, maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses of SSU rDNA sequences of representative taxa of Pezizomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Dothideomycetes, Leotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes, all strongly support the cleistothecial fungi Orbicula parietina and Lasiobolidium orbiculoides to be of pezizalean origin. Previous hypotheses of close affinities with cleistothecial or highly reduced fungi now placed in the Thelebolales, Eurotiales or Onygenales are rejected. Orbicula parietina and L. orbiculoides are deeply nested within Pyronemataceae (which subsumes the families Ascodesmidaceae, Glaziellaceae and Otideaceae). LSU rDNA sequences suggest that Orbicula is nested within the apothecia-forming genus Pseudombrophila (including Nannfeldtiella and Fimaria) and that L. orbiculoides is closely related. Ascodesmis and Lasiobolus, which have been suggested as closely related to Orbicula and Lasiobolidium, are identified as a sister lineage to the Pseudombrophila lineage. Cleistothecial forms that have lost the ascus operculum and ability to discharge spores actively have evolved at least once in the Pseudombrophila lineage. Some species of Pseudombrophila produce subglobular ascomata initials that are closed early in development and open only in the mid-mesohymenial phase. We hypothesize that, in the Pseudombrophila lineage, ascomata forms that never open are derived from ascomata that open late in development. The placement of O. parietina and L. orbiculoides within Pseudombrophila is supported by morphological characters, ecology and temperature optima for fruiting.

Surface entropy of rare-gas clusters

Abundances of ArN+ and XeN+ clusters produced in a supersonic expansion source are inverted to find relative dissociation energies. The values around the shell and subshell closings at N=55, 71, and 147 differ from theoretical values derived from ground-state energies of Lennard-Jones clusters. A significant part of the difference can be accounted for by the conformational entropies of surface atoms and vacancies.

Thermal radiation from CN+ and La@CN+

The radiative cooling of positively charged fullerene and endohedral fullerene fragments of C60, C70, C84, and La@C82 has been measured in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The radiative cooling is measured via its influence on the metastable decay. The emissivity extracted from the data is between 4x10(-4) and 13x10(-4). These values agree fairly well with the emissivity calculated from considering the low-energy tail of the surface plasmon. No major difference is found in the emission behavior of empty and endohedral fullerenes.

Continuous-wave wavelength conversion in a photonic crystal fiber with two zero-dispersion wavelengths: erratum

The coefficients from the polynomial fit to the dispersion profile do not have enough digits to reproduce the curve. A scaling error on Figs. 3 and 4 has been corrected.

Measurement of helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections on the neutron from 815 to 1825 MeV

Helicity-dependent total photoabsorption cross sections on the deuteron have been measured for the first time at ELSA (Bonn) in the photon energy range from 815 to 1825 MeV. Circularly polarized tagged photons impinging on a longitudinally polarized LiD target have been used together with a highly efficient 4pi detector system. The data around 1 GeV are not compatible with predictions from existing multipole analyses. From the measured energy range an experimental contribution to the GDH integral on the neutron of [33.9 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 4.5(syst)] microb is extracted.

Nonthermal power law decay of metal dimer anions

The metastable decay of dimer anions of Cu and Ag has been measured in a storage ring. The decay is found to proceed nonexponentially and is well described by a power law with an exponent of -1. This signals the presence of a continuum of decay constants in the ensemble. This quasicontinuum can be provided by the quantum mechanical tunneling decay of high angular momentum states populated in the source. Numerical calculations for dimers of a variety of elements suggest that this decay behavior can be expected for a wide range of species.

Dynamic Jahn-Teller effects in isolated C60- studied by near-infrared spectroscopy in a storage ring

We have measured the near-infrared absorption spectrum for isolated C60- ions at room temperature. Two bands, at 9145 cm(-1) and 10460 cm(-1), have been identified in addition to the main absorption band at 9382 cm(-1), seen also at low temperature in a matrix. An interpretation based on the theory of dynamic Jahn-Teller effects is proposed.

Clinical signs and physical function in neck and upper extremities among elderly female computer users: the NEW study

The aim of the study was to present the prevalence of clinical signs and symptoms among female computer users above 45 years, both in a group with self-reported neck/shoulder trouble (NS cases) and in a group without such trouble (NS controls). The hypothesis was that computer users with self-reported neck/shoulder trouble have more clinical findings than those not reporting trouble, and that a corresponding pattern holds true for physical function. In total 42 and 61 questionnaire-defined NS cases and NS controls participated and went through a clinical examination of the neck and upper extremities and five physical function tests: maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of shoulder elevation, abduction, and handgrip, as well as endurance at 30% MVC shoulder elevation and a physical performance test. Based on clinical signs and symptoms, trapezius myalgia (38%), tension neck syndrome (17%) and cervicalgia (17%) were the most frequent diagnoses among NS cases, and were significantly more frequent among NS cases than NS controls. A total of 60% of the subjects with reported trouble had one or several of the diagnoses located in the neck/shoulder. Physical function of the shoulder was lower in subjects with self-reported trouble as well as in the subgroup of NS cases with clinical diagnoses. In conclusion, the present clinical diagnoses and physical function tests differed between NS cases and NS controls, and are therefore recommended to be included as quantitative objective measures in assessing musculoskeletal health. Physical function tests should be further developed in order to be able to detect pre-stages of work-related disorders for preventive strategies.

Continuous-wave wavelength conversion in a photonic crystal fiber with two zero-dispersion wavelengths

We demonstrate continuous-wave wavelength conversion through four-wave mixing in an endlessly single mode photonic crystal fiber. Phasematching is possible at vanishing pump power in the anomalous dispersion regime between the two zero-dispersion wavelengths. By mixing appropriate pump and idler sources, signals in the range 500-650 nm are obtained in good accordance with calculated phasematching curves. The conversion efficiency from idler to signal power is currently limited to 0.3% by the low spectral density of the pump and idler sources at hand, but can be greatly enhanced by applying narrow line width lasers.
