Abstract
The authors have been engaged in the research and development concerning the recovery of MAP (Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate) using a fluidized-bed crystallized phosphorus removal system. In the reactor of the fluidized-bed crystallized phosphorus removal system, seed crystals (of MAP) are fluidized previously and new MAP crystals are produced on the seed crystal surfaces. Conventionally, the reactor consisted of one reaction tank only, but this practice had the problem that as the crystallization progresses, the seed crystal is grown excessively and as a result, the effective reaction surface areas are decreased and the fluidization effect is degraded, causing the recovery ratio to be decreased. Recently, the authors have devised a two-tank type reactor by adding a sub reaction tank to the reactor (now the main reaction tank) so that the MAP particle size in the main reaction tank may be kept constant making the recovery ratio stable. They conducted a demonstration test with a pilot experimental system of the 2-tank type reactor. For raw water T-P 111 to 507 mg/L, the main reaction tank treated water T-P 14.0 to 79.5 mg/L and phosphorus recovery ratios 84 to 92% were obtained. Because the mean MAP particle size in the main reaction tank could be kept constant, the phosphorus recovery ratio could always be above 80%, realizing stable treatment.

Abstract
Denatured syngeneic liver tissue prepared by mechanical procedures was intraperitoneally injected into adult C57BL/6 mice. In parallel with a decrease in the total number of lymphocytes in the liver, spleen, and thymus from days 1-7 after the injection, the proportion of the CD4+NK1.1+CD3(int) subset of these cells (i.e. natural killer T or NKT cells) increased in the liver. Even the absolute number of these NKT cells increased in the liver on days 14 and 21. In response to the injection of denatured liver tissue, tissue damage was induced in the liver, as shown by elevated levels of serum transaminases and hepatocyte degeneration observed by electron microscopy. Sera obtained on days 7 and 14 contained autoantibodies including anti-DNA antibodies. The proportion of CD1d(high)B cells in the liver was found to decrease on days 1-7. In other words, denatured liver tissue stimulated both NKT cells and certain B cells in the liver. These results suggest that liver lymphocytes might contain not only autoreactive T cells (e.g. CD3(int) or NKT cells) but also some B cells (e.g. B-1 cells) which produce autoantibodies and that the denatured tissue had the potential to stimulate these lymphocytes and to evoke an autoimmune-like state.

Abstract
Absorption, emission and thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) of as-grown and X ray irradiated pure and Ce-doped LiCaAlF6 crystals were investigated. Ce-containing samples demonstrate intensive TSL in the UV region (280-310 nm) with a main peak at 350 degrees C. It is found that the well known UV laser crystal LiCaAlF6:Ce is a promising thermoluminescent dosemetric material.

Abstract
To assess the usefulness of the population pharmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin (VCM) based on a two-compartment model in Japanese adult patients, predictability by a Bayesian method was evaluated using a concentration time course after single dosing to 22 patients with various degrees of renal function. Using one or two points from the observed data for each patient, the concentrations predicted by a Bayesian method were compared with the observed data for each sampling time. The patients were separated into five groups based on their renal functions indicated by creatinine clearance, and the mean prediction error (MPE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) were calculated for each group as measures of accuracy and precision, respectively. In both one- and two-point methods, the absolute MPE values at each sampling time in the elimination phase were less than 2.5 microg/ml, and the RMSE values were also small. No clear differences were found in MPE and RMSE among the groups. In the distribution phase, the MPE and RMSE were somewhat greater, and RMSE in some groups was around 15 microg/ml when trough data was used to predict the peak concentration. Also, the theoretical RMSE using this population parameter setting could well explain the observed RMSE. These results confirmed this population parameter setting is useful for at least predicting concentration in the elimination phase after single dosing, and the predictability was independent of renal function.

Abstract
To better understand the topological organization of the primordia within the anterior forebrain, we made a fate map of the rostral neural plate in the chick. Homotopic grafts at the four-somite stage were allowed to survive for up to 9 days to enable an analysis of definitive brain structures. In some cases, the topography of the grafted neuroepithelia was compared with gene expression patterns. The midpoint of the anterior neural ridge maps upon the anterior commissure in the closed neural tube, continuing concentrically into the preoptic area and optic field. Non-neural epithelium just in front of this median ridge gives rise to the adenohypophysis. Areas for the presumptive pallial commissure, septum, and prosencephalic choroidal tissue lie progressively more posteriorly along the ridge, peripheral to the telencephalic entopeduncular and striatopallidal primordia (the subpallium), and the pallium (olfactory bulb, dorsal ventricular ridge, and cortical domains). Subpallial structures lie topologically anterior to the pallial formations, and both are concentric to the septum. Within the pallium, the major cortical domains (Wulst and caudolateral, parahippocampal, and hippocampal cortices) appear posterior to the dorsal ventricular ridge. The amygdaloid region appears concentrically across both the subpallial and pallial regions. This fate map shows that the arrangement of the prospective primordia in the neural plate is basically a flattened representation of topological relationships present in the mature brain, though marked phenomena of differential growth and selective tangential migration of some cell populations complicate the histogenetic constitution of the mature telencephalon.

Abstract
A novel diode-pumped, efficient, quasi-end-pumping scheme that uses two lens ducts to achieve homogeneous pumping in a gain medium was proposed and evaluated. With this technique, room-temperature laser action at a pulse repetition frequency up to 20 Hz was demonstrated in 5%Tm, 0.5%Ho:LuLiF(4), which we grew by the Czochralski method. At 10 Hz a long-pulse laser output energy in excess of 24 mJ and a slope efficiency with respect to the incident pump energy of 10.7% were obtained.

Abstract
The effects of NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) on blood pressure of various strains of spontaneously hypertensive rats were studied. Blood pressure of the rats was higher in the order of WKY, SHR, SHRSP, M-SHRSP. L-NNA caused an elevation of the blood pressure, which was greatest in SHR and smallest in WKY and M-SHRSP. Endothelium-dependent relaxation of aortae by acetylcholine was greatest in preparations from WKY and it decreased as the blood pressure of rats increased. Phenylephrine (higher than 10(-6) mg/kg) caused an elevation of the blood pressure, which was greatest in SHR and smallest in M-SHRSP. It was suggested that L-NNA elevated blood pressure by inhibiting the basal or flow-induced release of nitric oxide from the endothelium that is causing a reduction in vascular smooth muscle tone. The smaller effect of L-NNA in WKY was due to weak smooth muscle tone, while the smaller effect in SHRSP and M-SHRSP is due to impaired function of endothelium.

Abstract
A 28-year-old man was admitted because of dyspnea on effort. His tricuspid valve had been affected by granulocytic sarcoma and manifested tricuspid valve stenosis 8 years previously. After chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the tumor had disappeared and the tricuspid valve stenosis was relieved. Echocardiography showed that the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve was affected by the tumor, and Doppler ultrasonography revealed mild mitral valve stenosis. Biopsy of the anterior chest wall detected granulocytic sarcoma. Chemotherapy was started. The tumor size was reduced and the mitral valve stenosis became slight. Primary cardiac granulocytic sarcoma is very rare and stenosis of the atrioventricular valve by relapse of this tumor after complete remission is extremely unusual.

Abstract
Given that there are few natural killer T (NKT) cells in the liver of athymic nude mice and in neonatally thymectomized mice, it is still controversial whether all NKT cells existing in the liver are supplied by the thymus or if some such cells develop in the liver. To determine whether or not NKT cells are consistently supplied from the thymus during adult life, thymectomy was conducted in mice at the age of 8 weeks. Interestingly, the proportion and number of CD4+ NKT cells increased or remained unchanged in the liver after adult thymectomy and this phenomenon continued for up to 6 months after thymectomy. The administration of alpha-galactosylceramide induced severe cytopenia (due to apoptosis) of CD4+ NKT cells in the liver on day 1, but subsequent expansion of these NKT cells occurred in thymectomized mice similar to the case in normal mice. However, in thymectomized mice given lethal irradiation (9.5 Gy) and subsequent bone marrow transfer, the population of CD4+ NKT cells no longer expanded in the liver, although that of CD8+ NKT cells did. These results suggest that thymic CD4+ NKT cells, or their progenitors, may migrate to the liver at a neonatal stage but are not supplied from the thymus in the adult stage under usual conditions. CD8+ NKT cells can be generated in the liver.

Abstract
Distinct classes of neurons are generated at defined times and positions during development of the nervous system. It remains elusive how specification of neuronal identity coordinates with acquisition of pan-neuronal properties. Here we show that basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors Olig2 and Neurogenin2 (Ngn2) play vital roles in the coordinated induction of pan-neuronal and subtype-specific properties of motoneurons. Olig2 and Ngn2 are specifically coexpressed in motoneuron progenitors. Misexpression studies in chick demonstrate the specific, combinatorial actions of Olig2 and Ngn2 in motoneuron generation. Our results further revealed crossregulatory interactions between bHLH and homeodomain transcription factors in the specification of motoneurons. We suggest that distinct classes of transcription factors collaborate to generate motoneurons in the ventral neural tube.

Abstract
Ultrasonography has been used in the evaluation of enlarged lymph nodes in patients with malignant lymphoma, which comprises a variety of histopathological subtypes. We assessed ultrasonic findings of infiltration in cervical lymph nodes of 47 patients with previously untreated malignant lymphoma and correlated them with histopathological subtypes. Common findings among various histopathological subtypes were hypoechoic masses, spot and/or line echoes, involvement of multiple nodes, and posterior enhancement. In addition, each histopathological subtype showed characteristic findings: Hodgkin's disease had a contour with a lobular pattern (9/10 cases), septum-like echo (9/10 cases), and tubular structure (9/10 cases) in the internal echo, reflecting histopathologically fibrous connective tissue surrounding lymph nodes and small vessels. In B-cell lymphoma, there was characteristically a tendency for lymph node fusion (19/28 cases) and spot and/or line echoes (17/28 cases), reflecting histopathological replacement and destruction of the structure of lymph node and capsule by proliferation of lymphocytes. These findings were strengthened in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. T-cell lymphoma was distinguished from other types of lymphoma by the presence of a hilum-like echo (6/9 cases), reflecting histopathologically prominent vascularization in lymph nodes accompanied by a dilated hilum area. In summary, this preliminary study suggests that ultrasonic findings of infiltration of cervical lymph nodes in major subtypes of malignant lymphoma could reflect characteristic histopathological structures, therefore providing information helpful for differentiating them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined cell subsets with respect to cutaneous graft-vs-host disease by cell sorting selection of subsets of human mononuclear cells and injecting the subsets subcutaneously in a mouse model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cell suspensions containing cultured human epidermal cells and dermal fibroblasts from a single donor mixed with lymphoid cell subsets positively selected using the FACSVantage cell sorting instrument and/or MACS cell isolation kits from unrelated individuals were injected into immunodeficient mice. This model is known to generate human skin with histologic findings similar to human graft-vs-host disease. RESULTS Donor T-cell subsets CD4(+) and CD8(+) plus either host or donor CD14(+) cells were necessary to cause acute cutaneous graft-vs-host disease. Although graft-vs-host disease can result from recognition of class I antigens expressed on human cutaneous cells by donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells, additional recognition of class II antigens expressed on host mononuclear cells resulted in more severe histologic manifestations. Dendritic cells that differentiated from donor and host monocytes also showed competent accessory cell function in this system. CONCLUSIONS Based on this model, human cutaneous graft-vs-host disease was caused by donor CD4(+) cells and CD8(+) cells activated through recognition of host antigens, including class I and class II antigens presented by either donor or host CD14(+) cells or dendritic cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the usefulness of ultrasonography in the differential diagnosis of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis versus malignant lymph nodes. METHODS Ultrasonography of cervical lymph nodes was performed with a real-time linear scanner using a 7.5- or 11-MHz probe or both. Ultrasonographic findings were retrospectively reviewed in 73 patients: 49 with malignant lymphoma, 15 with tuberculous lymphadenitis, and 9 with metastatic lymph nodes. RESULTS Ultrasonographic features specific to cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis were strong echoes (33.3%) and an echogenic thin layer (86.7%). When the lymph nodes had at least 1 of these 2 features, tuberculous lymphadenitis was diagnosed with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 100%. CONCLUSIONS Ultrasonographic evaluation of cervical lymph nodes can be useful in the diagnosis of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis.

Abstract
Effects of chronic treatment of normotensive Wistar rats with N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on blood pressure and on endothelium-dependent relaxation of the aorta, carotid and iliac arteries were studied. The endothelium-dependent relaxation was compared in arteries from normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) and genetically hypertensive rats (stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats, SHRSP). Chronic treatment of normotensive Wistar rats with L-NAME caused an elevation of blood pressure. The elevated blood pressure at 15 weeks of age was significantly higher in these animals than that of untreated Wistar rats, but lower than that of SHRSP. Endothelium-dependent relaxation of the arteries induced by acetylcholine (ACh) was almost abolished by chronic treatment with L-NAME. The remaining small relaxation in arteries from L-NAME-treated rats was completely inhibited by application of L-NAME (10(-4) M). In such preparations, higher concentrations of ACh induced a contraction, which was abolished by removal of the endothelium or by an application of indomethacin (10(-5) M). Endothelium-independent relaxation induced by sodium nitroprusside was similar between preparations from untreated and L-NAME-treated Wistar rats. Endothelium-dependent relaxation was significantly impaired in preparations from SHRSP, when compared with that in those from WKY. However, the impairment was less prominent in preparations from SHRSP than in those from L-NAME-treated rats. These results suggest that the impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation in the arteries from L-NAME-treated rats is not due to the elevated blood pressure resulting from the chronic treatment, and that impairment of NO synthesis by the endothelium does not play a major role in the initiation of hypertension in SHRSP.

Abstract
Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) has become the standard surgical procedure for ulcerative colitis (UC). The purpose of this study was to determine which factors are important to achieve good anal continence after IPAA in terms of the motor activity and pressure-volume relationship. A total of 17 patients with UC who underwent IPAA were evaluated. The internal ileal pouch pressure was transanally measured with and without volume-loading of the pouch which induces the urge to evacuate. The maximum tolerable volume (MTV), first urge volume (FUV), and ileal pouch compliance were calculated and the internal ileal pouch pressure records were subjected to spectral analysis for intensive evaluation of the intraluminal pressure waves. The FUV, correlation of the compliance of the FUV with MTV, and the remaining volume up to the MTV (RVMTV) were analyzed. Compliance of the FUV was significantly correlated with the RVMTV (r = 0.736, P < 0.01). The frequency of the phasic waves in the pouch decreased with length of follow up, reflecting improved function (r = -0.588, P < 0.05). The findings of this intensive analysis of manometric measurement indicate that the key factors in postoperative pouch function are RVMTV and the frequency of phasic waves in the W-pouch.

Abstract
Chirped-pulse amplification in the ultraviolet region is demonstrated by use of a broadband Ce(3+): LiCaAlF(6) laser medium. A modified bow-tie-style four-pass amplifier pumped by 100-mJ, 266-nm pulses from a Q -switched Nd:YAG laser has a gain factor of 370 and delivers 6-mJ, 290-nm pulses. Abstract
Difference in effects of stretch tension on endothelium-derived nitric oxide (EDNO)-dependent depression of noradrenaline (NA)- and high-K+-induced contraction between the aortae from normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) a nd stroke-pronespontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) was studied. NA-induced contraction in preparations both from WKY and SHRSP was augmented in the presence of N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). This augmentation was minimized when the spontaneous tone, which was more prominent in preparations from SHRSP, was subtracted and the effects of L-NNA became less prominent in preparations from SHRSP. The effects of L-NNA were maximal at the stretch tension of 15 mN and, then, decreased as stretch tension increased in both preparations when the spontaneous tone was subtracted. The effects of L-NNA were less prominent when the contraction was initiated by high-K+, although the effects of stretch on high-K+-induced contraction were similar to that of NA-induced contraction. These results suggested 1) that both NA- and high-K+-induced contractions are depressed by EDNO, 2) that the release of EDNO induced by high-K+ is less than that by NA, 3) that increase in stretch tension decreases the release of EDNO, and 4) that the depressive effect of EDNO on contraction is impaired in the aorta of SHRSP.

Abstract
Recent studies have established oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein (LDL) as an important atherogenic factor. We examined the clinical relevance of circulating oxidized LDL (OxLDL) levels in atherosclerotic disease by an enzyme immunoassay with use of specific antibodies against OxLDL (FOH1a/DLH3) and apolipoprotein B. Plasma OxLDL levels were significantly higher in patients with coronary heart disease (n=65) than in control subjects (n=181; 201. 3+/-11.2 versus 112.4+/-3.3 U/dL, respectively; P<0.01). OxLDL levels were not associated with age, sex, total cholesterol, or apolipoprotein B levels in normal control subjects. Our results suggest that circulating OxLDL may be a possible biochemical risk marker for coronary heart disease.

Abstract
Pallial and subpallial morphological subdivisions of the developing chicken telencephalon were examined by means of gene markers, compared with their expression pattern in the mouse. Nested expression domains of the genes Dlx-2 and Nkx-2.1, plus Pax-6-expressing migrated cells, are characteristic for the mouse subpallium. The genes Pax-6, Tbr-1, and Emx-1 are expressed in the pallium. The pallio-subpallial boundary lies at the interface between the Tbr-1 and Dlx-2 expression domains. Differences in the expression topography of Tbr-1 and Emx-1 suggest the existence of a novel "ventral pallium" subdivision, which is an Emx-1-negative pallial territory intercalated between the striatum and the lateral pallium. Its derivatives in the mouse belong to the claustroamygdaloid complex. Chicken genes homologous to these mouse genes are expressed in topologically comparable patterns during development. The avian subpallium, called "paleostriatum," shows nested Dlx-2 and Nkx-2.1 domains and migrated Pax-6-positive neurons; the avian pallium expresses Pax-6, Tbr-1, and Emx-1 and also contains a distinct Emx-1-negative ventral pallium, formed by the massive domain confusingly called "neostriatum." These expression patterns extend into the septum and the archistriatum, as they do into the mouse septum and amygdala, suggesting that the concepts of pallium and subpallium can be extended to these areas. The similarity of such molecular profiles in the mouse and chicken pallium and subpallium points to common sets of causal determinants. These may underlie similar histogenetic specification processes and field homologies, including some comparable connectivity patterns.

Abstract
Structural and numerical alterations, and fusion of chromosomes 16 and 1 have been shown to occur frequently in low-grade breast carcinoma, but not in benign papilloma by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We carried out FISH analysis of 11 benign tumors and 3 breast tumors for which the preoperative diagnosis was equivocal for cancer. In 11 benign lesions and 1 benign phyllode tumor which was cytologically equivocal for malignancy, alteration of the chromosome 16 or 1 signal was not detected as a predominant cell clone. On the other hand, in 1 grade 1 invasive ductal carcinoma which was judged as equivocal for malignancy and 1 marked adenosis with atypia which was judged as malignant by fine-needle aspiration cytology, the majority of constituent tumor cells showed fusion of chromosomes 16 and 1. Detection of alterations in chromosomes 16 and 1 as a predominant clone was suggested to be an indicator of lesion malignancy even though the grade of malignancy may not be high. As a supportive diagnostic procedure, FISH analysis may give information about the nature of lesions, when the lesions are clinically or pathologically equivocal for cancer.
