Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to preliminarily evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of injectable genetically engineered chondrocytes virally transduced with TGF-β1 (GEC-TGF-β1) compared to placebo. DESIGN A multi-center, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomized study of adults with knee osteoarthritis. A total of 102 patients were 2:1 randomized to GEC-TGF-β1 or placebo. Primary outcomes assessed were (1) function of the knee joint, scored using the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC); and (2) pain, measured by Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary endpoints assessed were pain and analgesic use, quality of life (QOL), and adverse events (AEs) including need for total knee arthroplasty after treatment. RESULTS IKDC showed significant improvement in the GEC-TGF-β1 group over the placebo at week 12 (least mean square difference (LSMD): 10.3; P = 0.0342), week 52 (LSMD: 13.6; P = 0.0082), and overall (LSMD: 8.6; P = 0.0453). VAS Analysis showed a significant improvement in GEC-TGF-β1 group compared to placebo at weeks 12 (LSMD: -13.8; P = 0.0162), 52 (LSMD: -13.1; P = 0.0332), and overall (LSMD: -10.1; P = 0.0350). Reduction in pain severity at week 12 and 52, frequency at 24 h and week 52, and the percentage of patients in the GEC-TGF-β1 group receiving analgesics at week 4 (27 vs 40%) and 12 (27 vs 37%) was observed. CONCLUSIONS GEC-TGF-β1 patients had more positive responses on the IKDC, VAS, and were less likely to require analgesics. Abstract
Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs), although they have attracted considerable attention as effective immunosensors, have still not been adopted for practical applications owing to several problems: (1) the poor sensitivity caused by the short Debye screening length in media with high ion concentration, (2) time-consuming preconditioning processes for achieving the highly-diluted media, and (3) the low durability caused by undesirable ions such as sodium chloride in the media. Here, we propose a highly sensitive immunosensor based on a self-amplified transistor under dual gate operation (immuno-DG ISFET) for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigen. To address the challenges in current ISFET-based immunosensors, we have enhanced the sensitivity of an immunosensor by precisely tailoring the nanostructure of the transistor. In the pH sensing test, the immuno-DG ISFET showed superior sensitivity (2085.53 mV per pH) to both standard ISFET under single gate operation (58.88 mV per pH) and DG ISFET with a non-tailored transistor (381.14 mV per pH). Moreover, concerning the detection of hepatitis B surface antigens (HBsAg) using the immuno-DG ISFET, we have successfully detected trace amounts of HBsAg (22.5 fg mL(-1)) in a non-diluted 1× PBS medium with a high sensitivity of 690 mV. Our results demonstrate that the proposed immuno-DG ISFET can be a biosensor platform for practical use in the diagnosis of various diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Five-weekly S-1 plus cisplatin (SP5) is one of the standard first-line regimens for advanced gastric cancer (GC), proven in a Japanese phase III study. To enhance the dose intensity of cisplatin, 3-weekly S-1 plus cisplatin (SP3) was developed. PATIENTS AND METHODS This multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase III study evaluated whether SP3 (S-1 80 mg/m(2)/day on days 1-14 and cisplatin 60 mg/m(2) on day 1) was noninferior/superior to SP5 (S-1 80-120 mg/day on days 1-21 and cisplatin 60 mg/m(2) on day 1 or 8) in terms of progression-free survival (PFS). Chemotherapy-naive patients with metastatic, recurrent gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma were randomized 1 : 1 to receive either SP3 or SP5. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00915382). RESULTS Between February 2009 and January 2012, 625 patients were randomized at 42 sites in Korea and Japan. With a median follow-up duration of 32.4 months (range, 13.3-48.6 months) in surviving patients, SP3 was not only noninferior but also superior to SP5 in terms of PFS [median 5.5 versus 4.9 months; hazard ratio (HR) = 0.82; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68-0.99; P = 0.0418 for superiority). There was no difference in overall survival (OS) between the groups (median 14.1 versus 13.9 months; HR = 0.99; 95% CI 0.81-1.21; P = 0.9068). In patients with measurable disease, the response rates were 60% in the SP3 arm and 50% in the SP5 arm (P = 0.065). Both regimens were generally well tolerated, but grade 3 or higher anemia (19% versus 9%) and neutropenia (39% versus 9%) were more frequent in SP3. CONCLUSIONS SP3 is superior to SP5 in terms of PFS. However, since the improvement in PFS was only slight and there was no difference in OS, both SP3 and SP5 can be recommended as first-line treatments for patients with advanced GC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The SEDLine™ monitor derived patient state index (PSI) is used to follow the depth of sedation. The demand for propofol sedation by anesthesiologists or non-anesthesiologists is increasing, and there are only a few studies addressing the relationship between PSI and propofol sedation. We aimed to investigate the ability of PSI index to identify the correct level of sedation of our patients during induction to anesthesia with target-controlled infusions of propofol. METHODS Twenty patients were enrolled in this study. The target effect site concentration of propofol was set at 1.5 μg/ml followed by increments of 0.5 μg/ml every five minutes. The PSI values and Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation (MOAA/S) scale were recorded every twenty-five seconds during the infusion of propofol. Patients were considered losing verbal responsiveness at MOAA/S scale ≤ 2. Also, blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation were recorded every five minutes. RESULTS The PSI values corresponding to the sedation of various depths (MOAA/S scales) and alertness with verbal response were significantly different (p <0.001). We observed a good correlation of the PSI values to the decreasing MOAA/S scale (r =0.87667). CONCLUSIONS The PSI index is well correlated with MOAA/S scale and effectively distinguishes the level of sedation during propofol infusion. Hippokratia 2015; 19 (3): 235-238.

Abstract
The genomes of living organisms are populated with pleomorphic repetitive elements (REs) of varying densities. Our hypothesis that genomic RE landscapes are species/strain/individual-specific was implemented into the Genome Signature Imaging system to visualize and compute the RE-based signatures of any genome. Following the occurrence profiling of 5-nucleotide REs/words, the information from top-50 frequency words was transformed into a genome-specific signature and visualized as Genome Signature Images (GSIs), using a CMYK scheme. An algorithm for computing distances among GSIs was formulated using the GSIs' variables (word identity, frequency, and frequency order). The utility of the GSI-distance computation system was demonstrated with control genomes. GSI-based computation of genome-relatedness among 1766 microbes (117 archaea and 1649 bacteria) identified their clustering patterns; although the majority paralleled the established classification, some did not. The Genome Signature Imaging system, with its visualization and distance computation functions, enables genome-scale evolutionary studies involving numerous genomes with varying sizes.

Abstract
Repetitive elements (REs) make up the vast majority of the mammalian genomes. We identified species-specific genomic libraries of RE arrays. The non-random configurations of RE arrays suggest their functions. We tested whether RE arrays undergo age- and tissue/cell-specific rearrangements. An RE array of C57BL/6J mice, containing tandem repeats of a mosaic of transposable REs, was selected to examine rearrangements in different ages and tissues. There were marked changes in the array configuration in the genomes of the skin and brain in all mice of six weeks and older, whereas the heart and liver had alterations at 29weeks. The temporal variations were confirmed by identifying putative rearrangement junctions. Temporal and spatial rearrangements of certain RE arrays may contribute to the acquired characteristics of the genome information system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Recent studies have demonstrated that Alzheimer's disease (AD) and subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) have white matter (WM) microstructural changes. However, previous studies on AD and SVaD rarely eliminated the confounding effects of patients with mixed Alzheimer's and cerebrovascular disease pathologies. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the divergent topography of WM microstructural changes in patients with pure AD and SVaD. METHODS Patients who were clinically diagnosed with AD and SVaD were prospectively recruited. Forty AD patients who were Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) positive [PiB(+) AD] without WM hyperintensities and 32 SVaD patients who were PiB negative [PiB(-) SVaD] were chosen. Fifty-six cognitively normal individuals were also recruited (NC). Tract-based spatial statistics of diffuse tensor imaging were used to compare patterns of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). RESULTS Compared with the NC group, the PiB(+) AD group showed decreased FA in the bilateral frontal, temporal and parietal WM regions and the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum as well as increased MD in the left frontal and temporal WM region. PiB(-) SVaD patients showed decreased FA and increased MD in all WM regions. Direct comparison between PiB(+) AD and PiB(-) SVaD groups showed that the PiB(-) SVaD group had decreased FA across all WM regions and increased MD in all WM regions except occipital regions. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that pure AD and pure SVaD have divergent topography of WM microstructural changes including normal appearing WM.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is the most important paraclinical diagnostic test in multiple sclerosis (MS). The appearance of MRI in Asians with MS is not well defined. We retrospectively surveyed the first brain and spinal cord MRI in patients diagnosed to have MS, according to Poser's criteria in seven regions throughout Asia to define the MRI changes among Asians with MS. There were 101 patients with first brain, and 86 with first spinal cord MRI, 66 of whom had both. The brain MRI showed a mean of 17 lesions per patient in T2 weighted images, mostly asymptomatic. Almost all the lesions were in the white matter, particularly in the juxtacortical, deep and periventricular white matter. A third of the lesions were greater than 5 mm, 14% enhanced with gadolinium. There were more supratentorial than infratentorial lesions at a ratio of 7.5: 1. Ninety five percent of the spinal cord lesions were in cervical and thoracic regions, 34% enhanced with gadolinium. The lesions extended over a mean of 3.6 +/- 3.3 vertebral bodies in length. Fifty (50%) of the brain and 54 (63%) of the spinal MRI patients had the optic-spinal form of MS. The MRI of the optic-spinal and classical groups of patients were similar in appearance and distribution, except that the optic-spinal MS patients have fewer brain but longer and more severe spinal cord lesions. In conclusion, the brain and spinal cord MRI of Asian patients with MS was similar to that of the West, although, in this study, Asian MS patients had larger spinal cord lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our previous study demonstrated that 6-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)quinazolin-4-one (HMJ38) was a potent anti-tubulin agent. Here, HMJ38 was used as a lead compound to develop more potent anti-cancer agents and to examine the anti-cancer mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Using computer-aided drug design, 2-aryl-6-substituted quinazolinones (MJ compounds) were designed and synthesized by introducing substituents at C-2 and C-6 positions of HMJ38. The cytotoxicity of MJ compounds towards human cancer cells was examined by Trypan blue exclusion assay. Microtubule distribution was visualized using TubulinTracker(TM) Green reagent. Protein expression of cell cycle regulators and JNK was assessed by Western blot analysis. KEY RESULTS Compounds MJ65-70 exhibited strong anti-proliferative effects towards melanoma M21, lung squamous carcinoma CH27, lung non-small carcinoma H460, hepatoma Hep3B and oral cancer HSC-3 cells, with one compund MJ66 (6-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)quinazolin-4-one) highly active against M21 cells (IC50 about 0.033 μM). Treatment of CH27 or HSC-3 cells with MJ65-70 resulted in significant mitotic arrest accompanied by increasing multiple asters of microtubules. JNK protein expression was involved in the MJ65-70-induced CH27 and M21 cell death. Consistent with the cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase, marked increases in cyclin B1 and Bcl-2 phosphorylation were also observed, after treatment with MJ65-70. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATION MJ65-70 are dual-targeted, tubulin- and JNK-binding, anti-cancer agents and induce cancer cell death through up-regulation of JNK and interfering in the dynamics of tubulin. Our work provides a new strategy and mechanism for developing dual-targeted anti-cancer drugs, contributing to clinical anti-cancer drug discovery and application.

Abstract
CeO2-deposited mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized as a probe to determine carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The prepared mesoporous nanoparticles were modified and tagged to the target for sandwich-type immunoassay. Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were also synthesized and immobilized with antibody to extract the target biomarker. The calibration curve of the synthesized CeO2-deposited silica nanoparticles, which was plotted by the signal ratio of (140)Ce/(57)Fe measured by ICP-MS vs. the concentration of CEA, showed excellent linearity and sensitivity owing to the signal amplification and low spectral interference. Under optimal conditions, the sandwich-type analytical method was applied to determine CEA in serum spiked in the range of 0.001-5 ng mL(-1) and showed a limit of detection of 0.36 ng mL(-1). Since the deposited CeO2 in the mesoporous silica layer can be substituted by other metal compounds, various kinds of metal-deposited nanoparticles can be prepared as probe materials for multiplex detection in bioanalysis.

Abstract
The effects of Sheng Hua Tang (SHT) on uterine involution and ovarian activity were investigated in postpartum dairy cows. SHT (70 g) was given to dairy cows (n = 10) to evaluate its effects for five days from the first postpartum day. Postpartum cows fed with a basal diet without SHT were used as the control group (n = 10). Ultrasounds and blood tests were recorded for four weeks from postpartum day seven with a 3-d interval. The results showed that the areas and diameters of endometria were significantly (p<0.01) reduced in the group that received SHT compared to the control group on the seventh postpartum day. The group that received SHT had an intrauterine fluid volume mean of 1.2±0.6 cm(3), which was significantly lower than that of the control group, 2.3±0.8 cm(3) (p<0.01) on the 13th postpartum day. In addition, the uterine tension score was a mean of 1.0±0.0 in the group that received SHT, which was also significantly lower than that of the control group, 1.5±0.5 (p<0.01) on the 19th postpartum day. Taken together, the Chinese herbal medicine remedy, SHT, promoted uterine involution and ovarian activity in postpartum dairy cows.

Abstract
Three Korean native steers (779±24 kg) fitted with duodenal cannulas were used in a 3×3 Latin square design to investigate the influence of oral administration of soluble proteins, intact casein (IC) and acid hydrolyzed casein (AHC), on gastrointestinal hormone (GIH) secretion in the blood and pancreatic α-amylase activity in the duodenum. Oral treatment consisted of a basic diet (control), IC (C+100% protein), or AHC (C+80% amino acid, 20% peptide) for 21 d. Blood and duodenum samples were collected for measurement of serum GI hormones, and pancreatic α-amylase activity was determined at 900, 1030, 1330, 1630, and 1930 h after feeding on d 21 of treatment. The levels of serum cholecystokinin (CCK) and secretin in the IC treatment group were higher compared to the other treatment groups (p<0.05). In addition to the changes in CCK and secretin levels upon IC treatment, the pancreatic α-amylase activity in the duodenum was higher in the IC group compared to the control diet group (p<0.05). The response of serum ghrelin to IC and AHC treatment was in accordance with the response of serum secretin. The level of peptide fragments flowing in the duodenum was higher in the IC treatment group than the other treatment groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that an increase in duodenal CCK and secretin upon IC oral administration increased pancreatic α-amylase secretion. In addition, ghrelin may be associated with GI hormone secretion in Korean native steers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To present the results of feminising genitoplasty done in female patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. DESIGN Case series. SETTING A tertiary referral centre in Hong Kong. PATIENTS Female patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia undergoing corrective surgery for virilisation between 1993 and 2012. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The operative result was judged with a scoring system (1-3) for four areas: appearance of clitoris, labia and vagina, plus requirement for revision surgery. RESULTS A total of 23 female patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia with a median age of 17.5 (range, 1.5-33.8) years were identified. Of these individuals, 17 presented in the neonatal period and early infancy, of which four had an additional salt-losing crisis. Six patients-including four migrants from mainland China-were late presenters at a median age of 2 (range, 0.5-14) years. Twenty-two patients had corrective surgery at a median age of 2 (range, 1-14) years. Clitoral reduction was performed in all, and further surgery in 21 patients. The additional surgery was flap vaginoplasty in 10 patients, a modified Passerini procedure in six, and a labial reconstruction in five; one patient with prominent clitoris was for observation only. Minor revision surgery (eg mucosal trimming) was required in three patients; a revision vaginoplasty was done in one individual. Of the 23 patients, 18 (78%) with a median age of 20 (range, 9.3-33.8) years participated in the outcome evaluation: a 'good' outcome (4 points) was seen in 12 patients and a 'satisfactory' (5-9 points) result in five patients. CONCLUSIONS Nearly three quarters of our cohort (n=17) presented with classic virilising form of 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Only four (25%) patients experienced a salt-losing crisis. Female gender assignment at birth was maintained for all individuals in this group. 'Good' and 'satisfactory' outcomes of surgery were reported in nearly all participants.

Abstract
The Foley catheter balloon may affect cervical ripening through changes in biochemical mediators by immunoassay and immunohistochemistry, when it is used for pre-induction cervical ripening. The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes in the biochemical mediators from the extra-amniotic space and immunohistochemistry in ripened cervical tissue after the insertion of a Foley catheter balloon (FCB) for pre-induction cervical ripening. A total of 18 pregnant women with a Bishop's score < 6, who were undergoing labour induction, were evaluated in this prospective study. The FCB was irrigated with 10 ml of phosphate buffered saline and the irrigant was collected 0, 2, 4 and 8 h after placement of the FCB or until spontaneous expulsion of the FCB occurred. Irrigant specimens were also collected from 10 spontaneous labouring (SL) women in the active phase of labour. The levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 and NO were measured. Cervical specimens were obtained from 12 women, including four undergoing induction; four SL and four non-pregnant (NP) women. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to localise hyaluronic acid synthase (HAS)-1, IL-6, IL-8, MMP-8, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS). Results showed that the levels of IL-6, IL-8, and MMP-8 significantly increased over time in FCB group (p < 0.01). In the immunohistochemical analysis of cervical tissues, immunoreactivity of HAS-1 in the after FCB group was stronger than any of the other groups. The protein expressions of IL-6, IL-8, MMP-8, eNOS and iNOS were more prominent in the after FCB and SL groups than in the NP and the before FCB groups. iNOS was only observed in the after FCB and SL groups. It was concluded that FCB may affect cervical ripening through changes in biochemical mediators by immunoassay and immunohistochemistry, when it is used for pre-induction cervical ripening.

Abstract
Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) is one of the most critical disorders of acute deep vein thrombosis in that it can cause permanent disability secondary to the compartment syndrome. Although several etiological factors have been proposed, PCD after coronary artery bypass surgery is extremely rare and its definitive pathophysiology is still under debate. We herein present a case of PCD that resulted in the compartment syndrome after coronary artery bypass surgery. Early recognition and decompression of PCD are crucial for saving the affected limbs.

Abstract
Genes constitute ~3% of the human genome, whereas human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) represent ~8%. We examined post-burn HERV expression in patients' blood cells, and the inflammatory potentials of the burn-associated HERVs were evaluated. Buffy coat cells, collected at various time points from 11 patients, were screened for the expression of eight HERV families, and we identified their divergent expression profiles depending on patient, HERV, and time point. The population of expressed HERV sequences was patient-specific, suggesting HERVs' inherent genomic polymorphisms and/or differential expression potentials depending on characteristics of patients and courses of injury response. Some HERVs were shared among the patients, while the others were divergent. Interestingly, one burn-associated HERV gag gene from a patient's genome induced IL-6, IL-1β, Ptgs-2, and iNOS. These findings demonstrate that injury stressors initiate divergent HERV responses depending on patient, HERV, and disease course and implicate HERVs as genetic elements contributing to polymorphic injury pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The progression pattern of brain structural changes in patients with isolated cerebrovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear. To investigate the role of isolated CVD in cognitive impairment patients, patterns of cortical thinning and hippocampal atrophy in pure subcortical vascular mild cognitive impairment (svMCI) and pure subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) patients were characterized. METHODS Forty-five patients with svMCI and 46 patients with SVaD who were negative on Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) positron emission tomography imaging and 75 individuals with normal cognition (NC) were recruited. RESULTS Compared with NC, patients with PiB(-) svMCI exhibited frontal, language and retrieval type memory dysfunctions, which in patients with PiB(-) SVaD were further impaired and accompanied by visuospatial and recognition memory dysfunctions. Compared with NC, patients with PiB(-) svMCI exhibited cortical thinning in the frontal, perisylvian, basal temporal and posterior cingulate regions. This atrophy was more prominent and extended further toward the lateral parietal and medial temporal regions in patients with PiB(-) SVaD. Compared with NC subjects, patients with PiB(-) svMCI exhibited hippocampal shape deformities in the lateral body, whilst patients with PiB(-) SVaD exhibited additional deformities within the lateral head and inferior body. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that patients with CVD in the absence of Alzheimer's disease pathology can be demented, showing cognitive impairment in multiple domains, which is consistent with the topography of cortical thinning and hippocampal shape deformity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review and evaluate the effects of intravitreal bevacizumab injection (IVB) in centralserous chorioretinopathy (CSC) by meta-analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Clinical controlled studies that evaluated the effect of IVB in CSC were identified through systematic searches of Embase, PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Data on the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in logMAR and central macular thickness (CMT) in μm at baseline and 6 months after IVB were extracted and compared with those treated by simple observation. RESULTS Four clinical controlled studies were included in the meta-analysis. The IVB injection group achieved better BCVA at a follow-up of 6 months. However, the analysis showed that there were no significant differences of BCVA at 6 months after injection between IVB group and the observation group (-0.02 logMAR, 95% CI -0.14 to 0.11, P=0.80). The analysis of the reduction in CMT revealed that the difference between groups was not statistically significant (-8.37 μm, 95% CI -97.26 to 80.52, P=0.85). No report assessed severe complications or side effects of IVB in patients with CSC. CONCLUSIONS Meta-analysis failed to verify the positive effect of IVB in CSC based on the epidemiological literature published to date.

Abstract
Understanding the performances of cloned pigs and their offspring is critical to evaluate the practical applications of somatic cell nuclear transfer. In this study, genetic polymorphism, growth performance, hematological parameters, and reproduction characteristics of cloned Landrace boars were compared with those of controls. In addition, the growth performance of clone offspring was also evaluated. A total of 479 reconstructed embryos were transferred to five recipient pigs and resulted in the delivery of 14 piglets (overall cloning of 2.9%) from two litters. Analyses of microsatellite markers and polymorphisms of the specific genes confirmed that the 14 clones were genetically identical to the nuclear donor and maintained the desirable genotypes. Growth performance of five healthy, phenotypically normal cloned boars from one litter and eight of their male offspring did not differ from age, breed, and management-matched controls. Although some significant differences were observed between cloned and control boars in hematological and serum enzymes, most of these parameters were within the normal range. Cloned boars had less (P < 0.05) normal sperm in the ejaculated boars than in control boars (71.4% vs. 77.9%, respectively), but sperm production (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm) did not differ between these groups. In addition, use of frozen-thawed semen from cloned boars for insemination produced results that seemed comparable to a control. In conclusion, the present study reported that somatic cell nuclear transfer is effective in reproducing preferred genetic traits and has potential applications to conserve elite bloodlines in a routine pig breeding program.

Abstract
Neonatal cholestatic disorder in the late neonatal period requires often cholangiography to differentiate between biliary atresia and other causes of prolonged neonatal jaundice. A simplified method of a laparoscopic-assisted cholecysto-cholangiography is presented. Retrospective chart review was conducted of all patients who from May 2002 to April 2012 underwent a laparoscopic-assisted cholecysto-cholangiography with routine fixation of the fundus of the gallbladder to the lateral aspect of the abdominal wall. A total of 18 infants (8 boys) aged 41-104 (median 64) days underwent laparoscopic-assisted cholecysto-cholangiography for prolonged jaundice. The technique identified ten cases of a patent bile duct system and eight biliary atresias. (Thirty-two cases of suspected biliary atresia were confirmed by laparoscopy alone.) Two cases required suturing of a bile leak at the puncture site. Hitching the gallbladder to the lateral abdominal wall is a simple method allowing an optimal radiographic assessment of the extra- and intra-hepatic bile duct anatomy.

Abstract
We retrospectively studied the radiological and clinical results of a simple hemiresection arthroplasty, a modification of previous oblique distal ulnar resections, in 62 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (68 wrists) over a mean follow-up of 103 (range 60-173) months. Fourteen wrists (20%) became fused at the radiocarpal joint and 28 wrists fused (41%) at the midcarpal joints during follow-up. Severe ulnar translocation of the carpus was observed in two wrists (3%), radio-ulnar convergence in five wrists (7%), as well as a significant decrease of carpal height ratio, without any radiological findings of stylocarpal impingement. Improvements in forearm pronation and supination, and reduction in pain were maintained at the last follow-up. Grip strength was not significantly improved. The Jebsen-Taylor hand function test showed improvements in writing, card turning, and simulated feeding. Fifty-two patients (58 wrists, 85%) were satisfied with the results at the last follow-up. Simple hemiresection arthroplasty showed good long-term results with few complications.

Abstract
A number of imaging studies have reported neuroanatomical correlates of human intelligence with various morphological characteristics of the cerebral cortex. However, it is not yet clear whether these morphological properties of the cerebral cortex account for human intelligence. We assumed that the complex structure of the cerebral cortex could be explained effectively considering cortical thickness, surface area, sulcal depth and absolute mean curvature together. In 78 young healthy adults (age range: 17-27, male/female: 39/39), we used the full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and the cortical measurements calculated in native space from each subject to determine how much combining various cortical measures explained human intelligence. Since each cortical measure is thought to be not independent but highly inter-related, we applied partial least square (PLS) regression, which is one of the most promising multivariate analysis approaches, to overcome multicollinearity among cortical measures. Our results showed that 30% of FSIQ was explained by the first latent variable extracted from PLS regression analysis. Although it is difficult to relate the first derived latent variable with specific anatomy, we found that cortical thickness measures had a substantial impact on the PLS model supporting the most significant factor accounting for FSIQ. Our results presented here strongly suggest that the new predictor combining different morphometric properties of complex cortical structure is well suited for predicting human intelligence.

Abstract
The dynamic-thermal electron-quantum medium finite-difference time-domain (DTEQM-FDTD) method is used for efficient analysis of mode profile in elliptical microcavity. The resonance peak of the elliptical microcavity is studied by varying the length ratio. It is observed that at some length ratios, cavity mode is excited instead of whispering gallery mode. This depicts that mode profiles are length ratio dependent. Through the implementation of the DTEQM-FDTD on graphic processing unit (GPU), the simulation time is reduced by 300 times as compared to the CPU. This leads to an efficient optimization approach to design microcavity lasers for wide range of applications in photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract
In a previous study, we established a collection of appropriate porcine placental extracts using PBS at 80°C (PE-PBS80) as a food supplement to increase immune activities in a mice model. In this study, piglets were treated with 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% PE-PBS80 for 3 wk after weaning. Experiments were performed at 2 separate farms using 2 different pig varieties. Composition of white blood cells, lymphocyte activation, and cytokine concentrations were analyzed to assess the immune modulation effect. In Exp. 1, the number of white blood cells increased significantly in the PE-PBS80 treatment and T- and B-cell activation increased as well (P < 0.01). Interestingly, piglets in all treatments in Exp. 2 were naturally infected by a rotavirus at the third day of the experiment but recovered after d 10. Increased lymphocyte activation was observed in the PE-PBS80 treatment (P < 0.01) regardless of viral infection. Additionally, unlike in Exp. 1, the percentage of granulocytes and concentrations of interferon-γ, IL-1β, and IgG increased in the PE-PBS80 treatment (P < 0.01) and were more active in the 0.3% PE-PBS80 treatment compared with the control and the other treatment. In conclusion, 0.3% PE-PBS80 treatment modulated immune activities in antigen-infected piglets. Therefore, the PE-PBS80 pig placental extract, particularly the 0.3% supplement to the normal diet, could be useful as an alternative feed supplement to modulate immune activity during the early piglet period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A2/B1 has been identified as a target antigen of anti-endothelial cell immunglobulin (Ig)A antibodies in patients with Behçet's disease (BD). The aim was to investigate the effects of the sera from BD patients and Streptococcus sanguis on the subcellular expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs). METHOD The sera of BD patients and healthy controls (HC) as well as cultured S. sanguis were used to stimulate HDMECs. Subcellular fractions were obtained from stimulated HDMECs and were subjected to immunoblot analyses. The distribution of hnRNP A2/B1 was investigated by immunocytochemistry and direct immunofluorescence study was performed in biopsy specimens of mucosal ulcers from BD patients. RESULTS BD patients' sera increased the membrane expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in HDMECs after 12 and 24 h of incubation compared with HDMECs incubated with endothelial cell culture media and HC sera. S. sanguis also increased hnRNP A2/B1 in the cellular membrane. hnRNP A2/B1 mRNA level was also significantly upregulated in HDMECs incubated with BD patients' sera and S. sanguis. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated marked expression of hnRNP A2/B1 in the cytoplasm and cellular membrane of HDMECs incubated with BD patients' sera or S. sanguis. In addition, direct immunofluorescence experiments revealed the co-localization of serum IgA antibodies and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against hnRNP A2/B1 in tissue sections from ulcers of BD patients. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that both the sera of BD patients with active disease and S. sanguis infection are inflammatory stimuli that can induce membranous hnRNP A2/B1 expression in HDMECs.

Abstract
The vast majority of the mouse and human genomes consist of repetitive elements (REs), while protein-coding sequences occupy only ~3 %. It has been reported that the Y chromosomes of both species are highly populated with REs although at present, their complete sequences are not available in any public database. The recent update of the mouse genome database (Build 38.1) from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) indicates that mouse chromosome Y is ~92 Mb in size, which is substantially larger than the ~16 Mb reported previously (Build 37.2). In this study, we examined how REs are arranged in mouse chromosome Y (Build 38.1) using REMiner-II, a RE mining program. A combination of diverse REs and RE arrays formed large clusters (up to ~28 Mb in size) and most of them were directly or inversely related. Interestingly, the RE population of human chromosome Y (NCBI Build 37.2-current) was less dense, and the RE/RE array clusters were not evident in comparison to mouse chromosome Y. The annotated gene loci were distributed in five different regions and most of them were surrounded by unique RE arrays. In particular, tandem RE arrays were embedded into the introns of two adjacent gene loci. The findings from this study indicate that the large and interrelated clusters of REs and RE arrays predominantly represent the unique organizational pattern of mouse chromosome Y. The potential interactions among the clusters, which are populated with various interrelated REs and RE arrays, may play a role in the structural configuration and function of mouse chromosome Y.

Abstract
This study examines the effects of household detergent on anaerobic methane fermentation of wastewater from food waste disposers (FWDs). Anaerobic toxicity assay (ATA) demonstrated that methane production substantially decreased at a higher detergent concentration. The Gompertz three-parameter model fitted well with the ATA results, and both the extent of methane production (M) and methane production rate (R(m)) obtained from the model were strongly affected by the concentration of the detergent. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) of the detergent was 603 mg/L based on R(m). Results from fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) analysis of microbial culture revealed that deterioration of methane fermentation was attributed to impaired structure of anaerobic microbial membrane due to detergent. This study suggests that wastewater from FWD could be used for methane production, but it is necessary to reduce the concentration of detergent prior to anaerobic fermentation.

Abstract
Background Murine leukemia virus-type endogenous retroviruses (MuLV-ERVs) constitute ~10% of the mouse genome and are associated with various pathophysiologic processes. In this study, we examined whether MuLV-ERVs’ response to burn-elicited stressors is specific for certain lymphocyte populations and/or locations of lymphoid organ. Results B- and T-cells, which were sorted from nine lymphoid organs of C57BL/6J mice after burn, were subjected to MuLV-ERV expression analyses. Overall, the post-burn MuLV-ERV expression pattern was dependent on lymphocyte type, time after injury, location of lymphoid organ, and MuLV-ERV type. For instance, the MuLV-ERV expression in T-cells from the thymus and three cervical lymph nodes decreased at 3 hours post-burn while the expression of some MuLV-ERVs was augmented in B-cells derived from the mesenteric lymph node. The MuLV-ERV U3 sequences population of the burn-24 hours group was less diverse in comparison to the no burn and burn-3 hours groups. In addition, it was apparent that at the 24 hours time point, the U3 populations of B-cells from both no burn and burn groups were less heterogeneous than the T-cells’ U3 populations. Using the U3 sequences, some of which were isolated only from specific experimental groups (B- vs. T-cells; no burn vs. burn), as probes, 51 putative MuLV-ERVs, including 16 full-length proviruses, were mapped followed by characterization of their biologic properties. Conclusion MuLV-ERVs’ response to burn-elicited stressors may be differentially controlled depending on lymphocyte type, location of lymphoid organ, MuLV-ERV type, and stress duration.

Abstract
About 10 % of the mouse genome is occupied by sequences associated with endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). However, a comprehensive profile of the mouse ERVs and related elements has not been established yet. In this study, we identified a group of ERVs from the mouse genome and characterized their biological properties. Using a custom ERV mining protocol, 191 ERVs (159 loci reported previously and 32 new loci), tentatively named Mus dunni endogenous virus (MDEV)-like ERVs (MDL-ERVs), were mapped on the C57BL/6J mouse genome. Seven of them retained putative full coding potentials for three retroviral polypeptides (gag, pol, and env). Among the 57 mouse strains examined, all but the Mus pahari/Ei strain had PCR amplicons corresponding to a conserved MDL-ERV region. Interestingly, the Mus caroli/EiJ's amplicon was somewhat larger than the others, coinciding with a substantial phylogenetic distance between the MDL-ERV populations of M. caroli/EiJ and C57BL/6J strains. MDL-ERVs were highly expressed in the lung, spleen, and thymus of C57BL/6J mice compared to the brain, heart, kidney, and liver. Seven MDL-ERVs were mapped in the introns of six annotated genes. Of interest, some MDL-ERVs were mapped periodically on three clusters in chromosome X. The finding that these MDL-ERVs were one of several types of retroelements, which form mosaic-repeat units of tandem arrays, suggests that the formation of the mosaic-repeat unit preceded the tandem arrangement event. Further studies are warranted to understand the biological roles of MDL-ERVs in both normal and pathologic conditions.

Abstract
We report a new 'spark erosion' technique for producing high-quality thermoelectric nanoparticles at a remarkably high rate and with enhanced thermoelectric properties. The technique was utilized to synthesize p-type Bi(0.5)Sb(1.5)Te(3) nanoparticles with a production rate as high as 135 g h(-1), using a relatively small laboratory apparatus and low energy consumption. The compacted nanocomposite samples made from these nanoparticles exhibit a well-defined, 20-50 nm size nanograin microstructure, and show an enhanced figure of merit, ZT, of 1.36 at 360 K. Such a technique is essential for providing inexpensive, oxidation-free nanoparticles which are required for the fabrication of high performance thermoelectric devices for power generation from waste heat, and for refrigeration.

Abstract
The tumor suppressor p53 is an important regulator of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, although downstream mediators of p53 remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that p53 and its downstream targets, p53-inducible ribonucleotide reductase (p53R2) and p53-inducible gene 3 (PIG3), physically and functionally interact with catalase for efficient regulation of intracellular ROS, depending on stress intensity. Under physiological conditions, the antioxidant functions of p53 are mediated by p53R2, which maintains increased catalase activity and thereby protects against endogenous ROS. After genotoxic stress, high levels of p53 and PIG3 cooperate to inhibit catalase activity, leading to a shift in the oxidant/antioxidant balance toward an oxidative status, which could augment apoptotic cell death. These results highlight the essential role of catalase in p53-mediated ROS regulation and suggest that the p53/p53R2-catalase and p53/PIG3-catalase pathways are critically involved in intracellular ROS regulation under physiological conditions and during the response to DNA damage, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biological complexity leads to significant variation in the survival of patients with stage I non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). DNA damage response (DDR) pathways play a critical role in maintaining genomic stability and in the progression of NSCLC. Therefore, the development of a prognostic biomarker focusing on DDR pathways is an intriguing issue. PATIENTS AND METHODS Expression of several proteins (ATM, ATMpS1981, γH2AX, 53BP1, 53BP1pS25, Chk2, Chk2pT68, MDC1, MDC1pS964, BRCA1pS1423, and ERCC1) and overall survival were investigated in 889 pathological stage I NSCLC patients. RESULTS Low expression of BRCA1pS1423 or ERCC1 was significantly associated with worse survival in the whole cohort of patients. Analysis performed based on histology revealed that low expression of γH2AX, Chk2pT68, or ERCC1 was a poor prognostic factor in squamous cell carcinoma patients [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), Cox P: 1.544, 0.012 for γH2AX; 1.624, 0.010 for Chk2pT68; 1.569, 0.011 for ERCC1]. The analysis of the interaction between two proteins showed that this effect was more pronounced in squamous cell carcinoma patients. However, these effects were not detected in adenocarcinoma patients. CONCLUSIONS The proteins involved in DDR pathways exhibited differential expression between squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma and were important determinants of survival in stage I squamous cell carcinoma patients.
