Abstract
BACKGROUND Immunosuppressants such as tacrolimus and cyclosporine are prescribed long-term after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) to prevent allograft rejection. Although these immunosuppressants are known to effectively control ulcerative colitis (UC), some post-OLT patients develop exacerbation of preexisting UC or de novo UC. Although aminosalicylates and corticosteroid courses are usually effective to treat such UC, several patients have developed uncontrollable disease and required colectomies. CASE REPORT We have reported a patient who developed de novo UC after OLT to treat liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Existence of the HBV infection made us avoid to increase the corticosteroid dose or to use other immunosuppressants such as azathioprine or infliximab. CONCLUSIONS In this patient, granulocyte and monocyte apheresis was highly effective in terms of inducing remission of de novo UC. No adverse event was noted.

Abstract
Background: A nomogram is progressively being used as a useful predictive tool for cancer prognosis. A nomogram to predict survival in nonresectable pancreatic cancer treated with chemotherapy has not been reported. Methods: Using prospectively collected data on patients with nonresectable pancreatic cancer receiving gemcitabine-based chemotherapy at five Japanese hospitals, we derived a predictive nomogram and internally validated it using a concordance index and calibration plots. Results: In total, 531 patients were included between June 2001 and February 2013. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM stages were III and IV in 204 and 327 patients, respectively. The median survival time of the total cohort was 11.3 months. A nomogram was generated to predict survival probabilities at 6, 12, and 18 months and median survival time, based on the following six variables: age; sex; performance status; tumour size; regional lymph node metastasis; and distant metastasis. The concordance index of the present nomogram was higher than that of the AJCC TNM staging system at 12 months (0.686 vs 0.612). The calibration plots demonstrated good fitness of the nomogram for survival prediction. Conclusions: The present nomogram can provide valuable information for tailored decision-making early after the diagnosis of nonresectable pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
A new method for the hybridization of a ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complex ([Ru(bpy)2((CH2PO3H2)2-bpy)](2+) (RuP2(2+): bpy =2,2'-bipyridine; (CH2PO3H2)2-bpy =2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'di(metylphosphonic acid)) with biphenylene-bearing periodic mesoporous organosilica (Bp-PMO made from 4,4'bis(triethoxysilyl)biphenyl [(C2H5O)3Si-(C6H4)2-Si(OC2H5)3]) was developed. Efficient and secure fixation of the ruthenium(II) complex with methylphosphonic acid groups (RuP2(2+)) in the mesopores of Bp-PMO occurred. This method introduced up to 660 μmol of RuP2(2+) in 1 g of Bp-PMO. Two modes of adsorption of RuP2(2+) in the mesopores of Bp-PMO were observed: one is caused by the chemical interaction between the methylphosphonic acid groups of RuP2(2+) and the silicate moieties of Bp-PMO and the other is attributed to aggregation of the RuP2(2+) complexes. In the case of the former mode, adsorbed RuP2(2+) (up to 80-100 μmol g(-1)) did not detach from Bp-PMO after washing with acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, or even water. Emission from the excited biphenylene (Bp) units was quantitatively quenched by the adsorbed RuP2(2+) molecules in cases where more than 60 μmol g(-1) of RuP2(2+) was adsorbed, and emission from RuP2(2+) was observed. Quantitative emission measurements indicated that emission from approximately 100 Bp units can be completely quenched by only one RuP2(2+) molecule in the mesopore, and photons absorbed by approximately 400 Bp units are potentially accumulated in one RuP2(2+) molecule.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Injections of human placental extract, which is known to play a role in skin regulation, have long been used for the treatment of skin wrinkles and non-healing wounds. Porcine placental extract (PPE), an oral supplement, was recently developed for this purpose. The aim of this study was to assess whether PPE has a positive effect on the improvement of fine wrinkles below the eye in climacteric women. METHODS We first non-invasively measured wrinkle widths with a skin analyzer in a cross-section of 185 healthy adult Japanese women. Next, 44 climacteric women with mild or few climacteric symptoms were enrolled into an open-label, randomized, controlled study of the effect of PPE on wrinkle widths. A retrospective comparison of wrinkle widths in 123 climacteric women with climacteric symptoms with or without PPE treatment was also performed. RESULTS Wrinkle widths below the eye in women ≥ 30 years of age were significantly higher than in women 20-29 years of age. Treatment with three capsules of PPE per day was significantly (p < 0.05) effective in reducing wrinkle widths at 24 weeks compared with control subjects. Retrospective analysis showed that subjects treated with three (p < 0.05) and six (p < 0.01) capsules of PPE per day observed a significant reduction in wrinkle widths compared with untreated subjects. CONCLUSION Oral PPE treatment is a possible option for improving the appearance of fine wrinkles below the eye in climacteric women.

Abstract
Photochemical decomposition of a fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid, C3F7CFCHCOOH (1), in the presence of WO3 and an electron acceptor (S2O8(2-) or H2O2) in water under visible-light irradiation was investigated. Under an O2 atmosphere, 1 was not decomposed either by TiO2 (P25) or WO3 alone. A combination of WO3 and H2O2 also resulted in almost no decomposition of 1. In contrast, irradiation in the presence of a combination of WO3 and S2O8(2-) (potassium salt) efficiently decomposed 1 to F(-), CO2, C3F7COOH, and C2F5COOH. The decomposition of 1 was affected by the counter cation of S2O8(2-): the decomposition extent was higher with K2S2O8 than with (NH4)2S2O8. The decomposition of 1 was further enhanced when the reaction in the presence of WO3 and K2S2O8 was carried out under an argon atmosphere. Under O2, the amount of H2O2 formed in the reaction solution was an order of magnitude higher than the amount formed under argon. This fact suggests that the decrease in the decomposition of 1 under O2 can be ascribed to the formation of H2O2, which consumed S2O8(2-) and SO4(-).

Abstract
The novel supramolecular complexes, which are composed of an [Os(5dmb)2(BL)](2+)-type complex (5dmb = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine; BL = 1,2-bis(4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridin]-4-yl)ethane) as a photosensitizer and cis,trans-[Re(BL)(CO)2{P(p-X-C6H4)3}2](+)-type complexes (X = F, Cl) as a catalyst, have been synthesized. They photocatalyzed selective reduction of CO2 to CO under red-light irradiation (λ > 620 nm). The photocatalytic abilities were affected by the phosphine ligands on the Re unit, and the supramolecule with P(p-Cl-C6H4)3 ligands exhibited better photocatalysis (ΦCO = 0.12, TONCO = 1138, TOFCO = 3.3 min(-1)). The detailed studies clarified the electron balance and material balance; i.e., one molecule of the sacrificial electron donor (1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH)) donated two electrons, one molecule of CO2 accepted the two electrons, and another CO2 molecule served as an "O(2-)" acceptor to give each molecule of the two-electron oxidized compound of BIH, CO, and HCO3(-).

Abstract
We synthesized for the first time a series of emissive ring-shaped Re(I) complexes (Re-rings) with various numbers of Re(I) units and various lengths of bridge ligands. The photophysical properties of the Re-rings could be varied widely through changes in the size of the central cavity. A smaller central cavity of the Re-rings induced intramolecular π-π interactions between the ligands and consequently caused a stronger emission and a longer lifetime of the excited state. The Re-rings can function as efficient and durable photosensitizers. The combination of a trinuclear Re-ring photosensitizer with fac-[Re(bpy)(CO)3(MeCN)](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) as a catalyst photocatalyzed CO2 reduction with the highest quantum yield of 82%.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally through complementary base pairing with thousands of messenger RNAs. Although the target genes and precise biological functions of individual miRNAs remain largely unknown, miRNAs are speculated to play important roles in diverse biological processes in both normal and pathological states. The liver is a vital organ that plays major roles in a number of physiological functions. Recent advances in the study of liver miRNAs using gene-modified mice or in vivo nucleic acid delivery to overexpress specific miRNAs or inhibit miRNA functions have revealed the crucial biological roles of individual miRNAs in physiologically essential liver functions in vivo. Because miRNA-based strategies are being applied to clinical therapeutics, the importance of precise knowledge of miRNA functions cannot be underestimated, not only from a scientific point of view, but also from a clinical perspective to make the most of such drugs and avoid unexpected harmful effects. The aims of this review are to describe current knowledge regarding both known and as-yet-undiscovered molecular aspects of the biological roles of miRNAs in the liver, with a special emphasis on lipid, glucose, drug, and iron metabolism as vital functions of the liver as well as important therapeutic targets.

A hybrid
for the visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction
of CO2 using methanol as a reducing agent was developed
by combining two different types of photocatalysts: a Ru(II) dinuclear
complex (RuBLRu′) used for CO2 reduction
is adsorbed onto Ag-loaded TaON (Ag/TaON) for methanol oxidation.
Isotope experiments clearly showed that this hybrid photocatalyst
mainly produced HCOOH (TN = 41 for 9 h irradiation) from CO2 and HCHO from methanol. Therefore, it converted light energy into
chemical energy (ΔG° = +83.0 kJ/mol).
Photocatalytic reaction proceeds by the stepwise excitation of Ag/TaON
and the Ru dinuclear complex on Ag/TaON, similar to the photosynthesis
Z-scheme.
