Abstract
Since the conventional coherent transceiver is costly to be deployed in short-reach networks due to its complicated receiver structure, it is desired to simplify the structure itself. In this paper, we propose a simple polarization-diversity coherent receiver structure by exploiting the concept of the Stokes analyzer. Compared to the conventional architecture, the number of the photodiodes (PDs) is reduced from eight to six without relying on complicated analog circuits. In addition, splitters and combiners for dual-polarization (DP) signals can be replaced with only one polarization beam splitter or combiner (PBS/C). For evaluation of the proof-of-concept (PoC), we developed a prototype of the receiver using free-space optical components. We demonstrate the transmission of 120-Gb/s DP quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and DP 8-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (8QAM) signals over a 100-km single-mode fiber (SMF). We believe that the demonstrated architecture could potentially be integrated monolithically on silicon-photonic or InP platforms to realize compact and low-cost coherent transceivers for short-reach applications.

Abstract
We report on the first Belle search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson, A^{0}, that decays into low mass dark matter, χ, in final states with a single photon and missing energy. We search for events produced via the dipion transition ϒ(2S)→ϒ(1S)π^{+}π^{-}, followed by the on-shell process ϒ(1S)→γA^{0} with A^{0}→χχ, or by the off-shell process ϒ(1S)→γχχ. Utilizing a data sample of 157.3×10^{6} ϒ(2S) decays, we find no evidence for a signal. We set limits on the branching fractions of such processes in the mass ranges M_{A^{0}}<8.97 GeV/c^{2} and M_{χ}<4.44 GeV/c^{2}. We then use the limits on the off-shell process to set competitive limits on WIMP-nucleon scattering in the WIMP mass range below 5 GeV/c^{2}.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Japan, 90% of kidney transplantations involve living related donors. A third-party interview is conducted during latter stages of preparation for transplantation to ensure the donor's voluntary decision-making. In this study, we investigated the factors responsible for withdrawal of decision for kidney donation by related living donors after third-party interview. METHODS Related living donor candidates were divided into 2 groups based on their final decision: those who finally donated the kidney (FDG; n = 435); and those who withdrew their decision after third-party interview (WG; n = 11). The psychosocial and medical variables were compared and the reasons for withdrawal were investigated. RESULTS Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that none of the variables were significantly related to WG. Six categories of reasons for withdrawal were identified: "avoiding pregnancy risk"; "selecting alternative treatment"; "avoiding physical burden for donor"; "recipients' intemperance"; "need to take more time for decision-making"; and "psychological pressure." CONCLUSION A certain number of donor candidates withdrew their decision for different reasons, even in the latter stages of the transplant preparation. Careful verification of the donor candidates' individual situation and provision of adequate information and time are important to protect the donor's right to refuse.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diagnosing fetal heart failure remains challenging because it is difficult to know how well the fetal myocardium will perform as loading conditions change. In adult cardiology, natriuretic peptides (NPs) are established markers of heart failure. However, the number of studies investigating NP levels in fetuses is quite limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of plasma NP levels in the assessment of heart failure in fetuses with a congenital heart defect (CHD) and/or arrhythmia. METHODS This was a prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary pediatric cardiac center. A total of 129 singletons with CHD and/or arrhythmia and 127 controls were analyzed between 2012 and 2015. Umbilical cord plasma atrial NP, brain NP and N-terminal pro-brain NP levels at birth were compared with ultrasonography findings indicating fetal heart failure, such as cardiovascular profile (CVP) score and morphological characteristics. RESULTS Fetuses with CHD and/or arrhythmia had higher NP levels than did controls (P < 0.01). NP levels of fetuses with CHD and/or arrhythmia were correlated inversely with CVP score (P for trend < 0.01). No differences in NP levels were found in fetuses with CHD and/or arrhythmia and a CVP score of ≥ 8 in comparison to controls. Multivariate analysis showed that a CVP score of ≤ 5, tachy- or bradyarrhythmia at birth, preterm birth and umbilical artery pH < 7.15 were associated independently with high NP levels (P < 0.01). Among fetuses with a CVP score of ≤ 7, abnormal venous Doppler sonography findings were significantly more common and more severe in fetuses with tachy- or bradyarrhythmia than in those with CHD, and those with tachy- or bradyarrhythmia had higher NP levels than did those with CHD (P = 0.01). Fetuses with right-heart defect and moderate or severe tricuspid valve regurgitation had significantly higher NP levels than did fetuses with other types of CHD (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Plasma NP levels in fetuses with CHD and/or arrhythmia are correlated with the severity of fetal heart failure. Elevated NP levels are attributed mainly to an increase in central venous pressure secondary to arrhythmia or atrioventricular valve regurgitation due to CHD, rather than to the morphological abnormality itself. Abstract
The life of currently-available centrifugal pumps is limited to no more than three days. As a magnetically suspended centrifugal pump (MSCP) contains no shaft or seal, it could be expected to have a longer life expectancy. The MSCP was evaluated in a chronic animal model using eight adult sheep. Left ventricular assist with the MSCP was instituted between the left atrium and the descending aorta. The flow rates ranged from 2.5 to 6.0 L/min. The duration of the experiments ranged from 14 to 60 days. No mechanical failure occurred. The plasma free hemoglobin levels remained within an acceptable range (3-19 mg/dL). No reduction in the counts of red blood cells or platelets was observed. Thrombus formation within the MSCP was recognized in one pump. The main reason for termination was thromboembolism derived from the circuits. Three types of regulation methods (constant rotational speed, constant motor current, and controlled motor current) were also investigated. Regulation by a constant motor current mode altered the pressure-flow (P-Q) characteristics, and thereby, a steadier pump flow was obtained compared with regulation in the constant rotational speed mode. Moreover, the controlled motor current mode can change the P-Q relationship. These results demonstrate that the MSCP is a promising device for long-term use.

Abstract
This paper describes the development of a submersible system based on a remote-operated vehicle coupled with radiation detectors to map the interior of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. It has the aim oflocating fuel debris. The AVEXIS submersible vehicle used in this study has been designed as a low-cost, potentially disposable, inspection platform that is the smallest of its class and is capable of being deployed through a 150 mm diameter access pipe. To map the gamma-ray environment, a cerium bromide scintillator detector with a small form factor has been incorporated into the AVEXIS to identify radioactive isotopes via gamma-ray spectroscopy. This provides the combined system with the potential to map gamma-ray spectra and particle locations throughout submerged, contaminated facilities, such as Units 1, 2 and 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The hypothesis of this research is to determine the sensitivity of the combined system in a submerged environment that replicates the combination of gamma radiation and water submersion but at lower dose rates.

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfates are the glycosaminoglycan chains of proteoglycans critical in the normal development and pathophysiology of all animals. Chondroitinase ACII, a polysaccharide lyase originally isolated from Arthrobacter aurescens IAM 110 65, which is widely used in the analysis and study of chondroitin structure, is no longer commercially available. The aim of the current study is to prepare recombinant versions of this critical enzyme for the glycobiology research community. Two versions of recombinant chondroitinase ACII are prepared in Escherichia coli, and their activity, stability, specificity, and action pattern are examined, along with a non-recombinant version secreted by an Arthrobacter strain. The recombinant enzymes are similar to the enzyme obtained from Arthrobacter for all examined properties, except for some subtle specificity differences toward uncommon chondroitin sulfate substrates. These differences are believed to be due to either post-translational modification of the Arthrobacter-secreted enzyme or other subtle structural differences between the recombinant and natural enzymes. The secreted chondroitinase can serve as a suitable replacement for the original enzyme that is currently unavailable, while the recombinant ones can be applied generally in the structural determination of most standard chondroitin sulfates.
