Measurement of bottom versus charm as a function of transverse momentum with electron-hadron correlations in p + p collisions at square root of s = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2009; 103:082002. Abstract
The momentum distribution of electrons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom quarks for midrapidity |y|<0.35 in p+p collisions at square root of s=200 GeV is measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 2<pT<7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined using partial D/D-->e(+/-)K(-/+)X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4 GeV/c in pT. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom production cross section at this energy is sigma(bb)=3.2(-1.1)(+1.2)(stat)(-1.3)(+1.4)(syst)mub.

Gluon-spin contribution to the proton spin from the double-helicity asymmetry in inclusive pi0 production in polarized p+p collisions at [sqrt]s=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2009; 103:012003. Abstract
The double helicity asymmetry in neutral pion production for pT=1 to 12 GeV/c was measured with the PHENIX experiment to access the gluon-spin contribution, DeltaG, to the proton spin. Measured asymmetries are consistent with zero, and at a theory scale of micro2=4 GeV2 a next to leading order QCD analysis gives DeltaG[0.02,0.3]=0.2, with a constraint of -0.7<DeltaG[0.02,0.3]<0.5 at Deltachi2=9 (approximately 3sigma) for the sampled gluon momentum fraction (x) range, 0.02 to 0.3. The results are obtained using predictions for the measured asymmetries generated from four representative fits to polarized deep inelastic scattering data. We also consider the dependence of the DeltaG constraint on the choice of the theoretical scale, a dominant uncertainty in these predictions.

Abstract
Background: The phosphatidylinositol 3′-kinase (PI3K)–AKT pathway is activated in many human cancers and plays a key role in cell proliferation and survival. A mutation (E17K) in the pleckstrin homology domain of the AKT1 results in constitutive AKT1 activation by means of localisation to the plasma membrane. The AKT1 (E17K) mutation has been reported in some tumour types (breast, colorectal, ovarian and lung cancers), and it is of interest which tumour types other than those possess the E17K mutation. Methods: We analysed the presence of the AKT1 (E17K) mutation in 89 endometrial cancer tissue specimens and in 12 endometrial cancer cell lines by PCR and direct sequencing. Results: We detected two AKT1 (E17K) mutations in the tissue samples (2 out of 89) and no mutations in the cell lines. These two AKT1 mutant tumours do not possess any mutations in PIK3CA, PTEN and K-Ras. Interpretation: Our results and earlier reports suggest that AKT1 mutations might be mutually exclusive with other PI3K–AKT-activating alterations, although PIK3CA mutations frequently coexist with other alterations (such as HER2, K-Ras and PTEN) in several types of tumours.

[PMID: 19020132 DOI: 10.1213/ane.0b013e3181887fcc] [Citation(s) in RCA: 49] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/05/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Dexmedetomidine induces less change in hemodynamic values during the extubation period. This drug may be useful in anesthetic management requiring smooth emergence from anesthesia. We sought to determine the effects of co-administration of dexmedetomidine on the recovery profiles from sevoflurane and propofol, which usually provide safe and rapid recovery when administered alone. METHODS Sixty patients undergoing lower abdominal surgery were randomly divided into four groups according to the anesthetic to be administered; namely, sevoflurane (group S), propofol (group P), both sevoflurane and dexmedetomidine (group SD), or propofol and dexmedetomidine (group PD) as maintenance general anesthetics. After induction, anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane (0.6%-1.5%) in group S, propofol (2-5 mg/kg/h) in group P, sevoflurane and dexmedetomidine (1 microg/kg over 10 min followed by 0.4 microg/kg/h until the end of surgery) in group SD, and propofol and dexmedetomidine in group PD with continuous epidural infusion. Bispectral Index values were maintained within 45 +/- 5 by changing the concentration of sevoflurane or the infusion rate of propofol in all groups. The time between the interruption of maintenance general anesthetics and eye opening was measured. Postoperative cognitive function was evaluated using the Short Orientation Memory Concentration Test. RESULTS The time to eye opening of groups S (8.5 +/- 2.5 min, mean +/- SD; n = 15) and SD (12.0 +/- 3.3 min) were comparable, whereas that of group PD (21.7 +/- 7.1 min) was longer than that of group P (11.0 +/- 4.4 min). The time to eye opening of group PD was significantly (P < 0.001) longer than those of the other three groups. The scores of Short Orientation Memory Concentration Test between groups S and P were similar and were not changed by co-administration of dexmedetomidine. CONCLUSION When co-administered with dexmedetomidine, sevoflurane produced a shorter time to eye opening than propofol. Postoperative cognitive function was not affected by dexmedetomidine administration. These results suggest dexmedetomidine may delay recovery when given as an adjuvant to propofol during total i.v. anesthesia.

Abstract
For Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV, we measure neutral pion production with good statistics for transverse momentum, pT, up to 20 GeV/c. A fivefold suppression is found, which is essentially constant for 5 < pT < 20 GeV/c. Experimental uncertainties are small enough to constrain any model-dependent parametrization for the transport coefficient of the medium, e.g., q in the parton quenching model. The spectral shape is similar for all collision classes, and the suppression does not saturate in Au + Au collisions.

Abstract
Neutral pion transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra at midrapidity (|y| less than or approximately 0.35) were measured in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. Relative to pi_(0) yields in p+p collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions (N(coll) the pi_(0) yields for p(T) more than or approximately 2 GeV/c in central Cu+Cu collisions are suppressed at 62.4 and 200 GeV whereas an enhancement is observed at 22.4 GeV. A comparison with a jet-quenching model suggests that final state parton energy loss dominates in central Cu+Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV, while the enhancement at 22.4 GeV is consistent with nuclear modifications in the initial state alone.

Abstract
Yields for J/psi production in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt s_NN=200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range |y|<2.2 and compared with results in p+p and Au+Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie. Cold nuclear matter estimates based on ad hoc fits to d+Au data describe the Cu+Cu data up to N_part approximately 50, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density of at least 1.5 GeV/fm(3).

Abstract
Measurements in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV of jet correlations for a trigger hadron at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T,trig}) with associated mesons or baryons at lower p_{T,assoc} indicate strong modification of the away-side jet. The ratio of jet-associated baryons to mesons increases with centrality and p_{T,assoc}. For the most central collisions, the ratio is similar to that for inclusive measurements. This trend is incompatible with in-vacuum fragmentation but could be due to jetlike contributions from correlated soft partons, which recombine upon hadronization.

Abstract
UNLABELLED OVX increased the percentage of AP-positive CFU-F in healing rat mandible. The increase of the number of osteoprogenitors was not significant in rat mandible-derived cultures but was in femur-derived ones. This suggests that the effect of OVX on osteoprogenitors is either smaller or develops later in mandible relative to femur. INTRODUCTION Osteoprogenitors play an essential role in the regeneration process that leads to the successful integration of dental implants. However, it is unclear how systemic osteoporosis affects osteoprogenitors in oral bone. The present study was designed to determine the short-term effects of ovariectomy (OVX) on osteoprogenitors from the healing extraction socket in rat mandible. METHODS Six-month-old rats were ovariectomized (n=8) and control rats were left intact (n=8). Two weeks post-OVX, the right mandibular incisor was extracted. Four weeks post-extraction, the basal mandibular bone between the 1st and 3rd molar in the healing extraction socket was used to determine the number of fibroblastic progenitors (CFU-F), alkaline phosphatase-positive fibroblastic progenitors (AP-positive CFU-F), Dex-dependent osteoprogenitors (CFU-O Dex) and Prog-dependent osteoprogenitors (CFU-O Prog) using colony assays (n=5). Osteocalcin mRNA expression was evaluated using in situ hybridization (n=3). Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA or Student's t-test. RESULTS OVX increased the percentage of AP-positive CFU-F in both mandible and femur. The number of CFU-O was increased only in femur. Osteocalcin mRNA expression in regenerating mandible was not statistically different between control and OVX animals. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that the effect of OVX on osteoprogenitors is either smaller or develops later in mandible relative to femur.

Aqueous extract of Arbutus unedo inhibits STAT1 activation in human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 and human fibroblasts through SHP2 activation. Med Chem 2008; 4:219-28. Abstract
Arbutus unedo L. has been for a long time employed in traditional and popular medicine as an astringent, diuretic, urinary anti-septic, and more recently, in the therapy of hypertension and diabetes. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) is a fascinating and complex protein with multiple yet contrasting transcriptional functions. Although activation of this nuclear factor is finely regulated in order to control the entire inflammatory process, its hyper-activation or time-spatially erroneous activation may lead to exacerbation of inflammation. The modulation of this nuclear factor, therefore, has recently been considered as a new strategy in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. In this study, we present data showing that the aqueous extract of Arbutus unedo's leaves exerts inhibitory action on interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) elicited activation of STAT1, both in human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 and in human fibroblasts. This down-regulation of STAT1 is shown to result from a reduced tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT1 protein. Evidence is also presented indicating that the inhibitory effect of this extract may be mediated through enhancement of tyrosine phosphorylation of SHP2 tyrosine phosphatase. The modulation of this nuclear factor turns out into the regulation of the expression of a number of genes involved in the inflammatory response such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). Taken together, our results suggest that the employment of the Arbutus unedo aqueous extract is promising, at least, as an auxiliary anti-inflammatory treatment of diseases in which STAT1 plays a critical role.

Abstract
A three-dimensional correlation function obtained from midrapidity, low p(T), pion pairs in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV is studied. The extracted model-independent source function indicates a long range tail in the directions of the pion pair transverse momentum (out) and the beam (long). A proper breakup time tau(0) ~ 9 fm/c and a mean proper emission duration Delta tau ~ 2 fm/c, leading to sizable emission time differences ({|Delta t(LCM)|} approximately 12 fm/c), are required to allow models to be successfully matched to these tails. The model comparisons also suggest an outside-in "burning" of the emission source reminiscent of many hydrodynamical models.

Medial and adventitial macrophages are associated with expansive atherosclerotic remodeling in rabbit femoral artery. Histol Histopathol 2008; 23:127-36. Abstract
Expansive vascular remodeling is considered a feature of vulnerable plaques. Although inflammation is upregulated in the media and adventitia of atherosclerotic lesions, its contribution to expansive remodeling is unclear. We investigated this issue in injured femoral arteries of normo- and hyperlipidemic rabbits fed with a conventional (CD group; n=20) or a 0.5% cholesterol (ChD group; n=20) diet. Four weeks after balloon injury of the femoral arteries, we examined vascular wall alterations, localization of macrophages and matrix metalloproteases (MMP)-1, -2, -9, and extracellular matrix. Neointimal formation with luminal stenosis was evident in both groups, while expansive remodeling was observed only in the ChD group. Areas immunopositive for macrophages, MMP-1, -2 and -9 were larger not only in the neointima, but also in the media and/or adventitia in the injured arterial walls of the ChD, than in the CD group. Areas containing smooth muscle cells (SMCs), elastin and collagen were smaller in the injured arterial walls of the ChD group. MMP-1, -2 and -9 were mainly localized in infiltrating macrophages. MMP-2 was also found in SMCs and adventitial fibroblasts. Vasa vasorum density was significantly increased in injured arteries of ChD group than in those of CD group. These results suggest that macrophages in the media and adventitia play an important role in expansive atherosclerotic remodeling via extracellular matrix degradation and SMC reduction.

Abstract
Long-distance signals generated in shoots are thought to be associated with the regulation of iron uptake from roots; however, the signaling mechanism is still unknown. To elucidate whether the signal regulates iron uptake genes in roots positively or negatively, we analyzed the expressions of two representative iron uptake genes: NtIRT1 and NtFRO1 in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) roots, after shoots were manipulated in vitro. When iron-deficient leaves were treated with Fe(II)-EDTA, the expressions of both genes were significantly reduced; nevertheless iron concentration in the roots maintained a similar level to that in roots grown under iron-deficient conditions. Next, all leaves from tobacco plants grown under the iron-deficient condition were excised. The expression of two genes were quickly reduced below half within 2 h after the leaf excision and gradually disappeared by the end of a 24-h period. The NtIRT1 expression was compared among the plants whose leaves were cut off in various patterns. The expression increased in proportion to the dry weight of iron-deficient leaves, although no relation was observed between the gene expression and the position of excised leaves. Interestingly, the NtIRT1 expression in hairy roots increased under the iron-deficient condition, suggesting that roots also have the signaling mechanism of iron status as well as shoots. Taken together, these results indicate that the long-distance signal generated in iron-deficient tissues including roots is a major factor in positive regulation of the expression of NtIRT1 and NtFRO1 in roots, and that the strength of the signal depends on the size of plants.

Abstract
Differential elliptic flow (v(2)) for phi mesons and (anti)deuterons (d)d is measured for Au+Au collisions at square root of sNN=200 GeV. The v(2) for phi mesons follows the trend of lighter pi+/- and K+/- mesons, suggesting that ordinary hadrons interacting with standard hadronic cross sections are not the primary driver for elliptic flow development. The v(2) values for (d)d suggest that elliptic flow is additive for composite particles. This further validation of the universal scaling of v(2) per constituent quark for baryons and mesons suggests that partonic collectivity dominates the transverse expansion dynamics.

Abstract
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum (1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from dijets in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at square root sNN=62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from Delta phi=pi in central and semicentral collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured J/psi production for rapidities -2.2<y<2.2 in Au+Au collisions at square root sNN=200 GeV. The J/psi invariant yield and nuclear modification factor RAA as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity are reported. A suppression of J/psi relative to binary collision scaling of proton-proton reaction yields is observed. Models which describe the lower energy J/psi data at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron invoking only J/psi destruction based on the local medium density predict a significantly larger suppression at RHIC and more suppression at midrapidity than at forward rapidity. Both trends are contradicted by our data.

Abstract
Differential measurements of elliptic flow (v2) for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV are used to test and validate predictions from perfect fluid hydrodynamics for scaling of v2 with eccentricity, system size, and transverse kinetic energy (KE T). For KE T identical with mT-m up to approximately 1 GeV the scaling is compatible with hydrodynamic expansion of a thermalized fluid. For large values of KE T mesons and baryons scale separately. Quark number scaling reveals a universal scaling of v2 for both mesons and baryons over the full KE T range for Au+Au. For Au+Au and Cu+Cu the scaling is more pronounced in terms of KE T, rather than transverse momentum.

Abstract
The momentum distribution of electrons from decays of heavy flavor (charm and bottom) for midrapidity absolute value of y < 0.35 in p + p collisions at square root of s = 200 GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 0.3 < pT < 9 GeV/c. Two independent methods have been used to determine the heavy-flavor yields, and the results are in good agreement with each other. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative QCD calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties, with the data/theory ratio of 1.71+/-0.02stat+/-0.18sys for 0.3 < pT < 9 GeV/c. The total charm production cross section at this energy has also been deduced to be sigma cc = 567+/-57stat+/-193sys microb.

Abstract
Responses induced by Cd exposure were assessed in tobacco seedlings (Nicotiana tabacum L.) using macro and molecular indices. The 100 microM of Cd exposure reduced the total dry weight and chlorophyll index of the seedlings as much as the genuine Fe-deficiency. Concentration of Fe in the shoots decreased, whereas that in the roots increased by the Cd exposure, especially in the apoplasmic space. It is probable that Cd interferes mainly with the step of Fe-translocation from the roots to shoots and this sets the upper-part of the plant in a state of Fe-deficiency. The Cd exposure coordinately increased the expressions of the exogenous and the endogenous Fe-deficiency responsive genes, HvIDS2(pro)::GUS, NtFRO1 and NtIRT1 in the roots. This is the first data to demonstrate the responses of Cd-inducible Fe-deficiency at a molecular level.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine whether epidural administration of neostigmine reduces the stress and inflammatory responses thereby improving postoperative pain status. DESIGN Randomized, double-blinded clinical study. SETTING Operating rooms and wards of a university hospital. PATIENTS 40 ASA physical status I patients undergoing lower open abdominal surgery for benign gynecological disease. INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomly divided into four groups to receive different doses of epidural neostigmine (0, 0.05, 0.1, or 0.15 mg) with mepivacaine (100 mg) before general anesthesia induction. MEASUREMENTS The plasma levels of cortisol and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were determined perioperatively. The patients' pain rating was assessed by visual analog scale (VAS) in the postoperative period. MAIN RESULTS Epidural neostigmine at all doses significantly reduced the plasma levels of cortisol in the early surgical period; however, IL-6 levels were not affected by the neostigmine. The VAS scores were significantly decreased at 2 hours after the end of surgery by all doses of epidural neostigmine used in this study. CONCLUSIONS The preincisional epidural neostigmine transiently suppresses the stress responses during surgery and improves postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing lower open abdominal surgery.

Saturation of azimuthal anisotropy in Au + Au collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 62-200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:232302. Abstract
New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at (square root)s(NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb + Pb collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (pT) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (upsilon2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, upsilon2(pT), change very little over the collision energy range (square root)s(NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for upsilon2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for (square root)s(NN) approximately 60-200 GeV.

Abstract
Viomycin-resistant strains isolated from Mycobacterium smegmatis demonstrated pleiotropic resistance to tuberactinomycin-N, capreomycin, streptomycin, and kanamycin as a result of mutational alteration of ribosomes, even though they were selected for resistance to a single antibiotic. The pleiotropic drug resistance of three mutants isolated by stepwise selection for resistance to viomycin was due to alteration of the 30S ribosomal subunit. One mutant, strain A, isolated independently by multiple-step selection to viomycin resistance, was resistant to viomycin, tuberactinomycin-N, and capreomycin through an alteration of the 50S ribosomal subunit, whereas it was sensitive to kanamycin but resistant to streptomycin through an alteration of the 30S ribosomal subunit. Three streptomycin-resistant strains, which were isolated by one-step selection at a high concentration of streptomycin, did not show significant co-resistance to any other antibiotics tested in culture and cell-free systems; streptomycin resistance in these mutants was localized on the 30S ribosomal subunit.
