Abstract
The anti-malarial drug, artemisinin, is quite expensive as a result of its slow content in Artemisia annua. Recent investigations have suggested that genetic engineering of A. annua is a promising approach to improve the yield of artemisinin. In this study, the transgenic A. annua strain GYR, which has high artemisinin content, was evaluated in an environmental release trial. First, GYR plants were compared with the wild-type variety NON-GYR, with regard to phenotypic characters (plant height, crown width, stem diameter, germination rate, leaf dry weight, 1000-seed weight, leave shape). Second, stress resistance in the two varieties (salt, drought, herbicide, and cold resistance) was evaluated under different experimental conditions. Finally, gene flow was estimated. The results indicated that there were significant differences in several agronomic traits (plant height, stem diameter, and leave dry weight) between the transgenic GYR and NON-GYR plants. Salt stress in transgenic and control plants was similar, except under high NaCl concentrations (1.6%, w/w). Leaf water, proline, and MDA content (increased significantly) were significantly different. Transgenic A. annua GYR plants did not grow better than NON-GYR plants with respect to drought and herbicide resistance. The two varieties maintained vitality through the winter. Third, gene flow was studied in an environmental risk trial for transgenic GYR. The maximum gene flow frequency was 2.5%, while the maximum gene flow distance was 24.4 m; gene flow was not detected at 29.2 m at any direction. Our findings may provide an opportunity for risk assessment in future commercialization of transgenic A. annua varieties.

Abstract
In this study, we established a 2-D model composed ofbrain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) and neurons, and a new 3-D model called a neurovascular unit (NVU) that included co-culturing with BMECs, hippocampal neurons, and astrocytes. First, three different cell types (BMECs, hippocampal neurons, and astrocytes) were cultured and identified; then, positive neurotoxic chemicals were used to test cell viability. Half maximal (50%) inhibitory concentration (IC50) and intracellular calcium concentrations were calculated using primary cells in both models. The results showed that Pb2+ and AL3+ exposure significantly decreased cell viability and increased intracellular calcium concentrations. The two experimental models did not display any differences in cell viability and intracellular calcium concentrations compared to the control, but they did show declining cell viability with increasing Pb2+ and AL3+ concentrations. The permeability results suggested Pb2+ and AL3+ could change the permeability of the two models. In conclusion, the two models replicated the blood-brain barrier (BBB) more accurately than the control, so it has potential usefulness in further scientific and clinical drug research. Furthermore, NVU model could be used to screen neurotoxicity chemicals due to its NVU properties.

Abstract
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine that is involved in tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) -174G/C in IL-6 on the prognosis and pain tolerance of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of 434 patients with NSCLC, which was diagnosed by cytology or histology. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used to detect the IL-6 -174G/C genotypes and their correlation with survival was analyzed. The IL-6 -174G/C genotypes were high IL-6 production type (G carriers - GG or GC genotypes) and low IL-6 production type (CC genotype). The correlation between the IL-6 SNP and pain level/analgesic use was also analyzed. Survival analysis showed that patients carrying the G allele (CG/GG) had a shorter survival time than patients with the CC genotype. The -174G/C SNP is in the promoter region of the IL-6 gene and may be associated with changes in gene transcription and serum cytokine levels. Presence of the IL-6 -174G/C SNP is significantly correlated with morphine equivalent daily dose. Patients with the CC genotype needed a higher opioid dose than patients with the GG or GC genotypes. In conclusion, we found that the IL-6 -174G/C SNP is closely related to survival, analgesic use and pain tolerance in NSCLC patients. However, it is necessary to further validate the results with a larger patient cohort and elucidate the mechanisms of this SNP.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of three-dimensional endoanal ultrasound (3D-EAUS) on postoperative outcome in patients with anal fistula. METHOD This prospective study compared clinical and functional outcomes of patients with and without preoperative 3D-EAUS examination 1 year after anal fistula surgery. Patients were prospectively followed and evaluated by a standardized protocol including physical examination, the Wexner Incontinence Score (WIS) and anorectal manometry, at baseline and 1 year after surgery. RESULTS A total of 196 patients were enrolled. There were no significant differences in demographic and operative parameters, except for operation time, between the two groups. At 1 year follow-up, the overall recurrence rates were 8.8% (9/102) in the 3D-EAUS group and 13.8% (13/94) in the examination under anaesthesia (EUA) group. In the subgroup of patients with complex fistulae, the recurrence rate was numerically lower in the 3D-EAUS group (12.8% vs 22.5%; P = 0.26). The WIS in the EUA group significantly worsened (0.35 ± 0.94 vs 1.07 ± 1.59; P = 0.003) with a decreased the number of fully continent patients (82.5% vs 55%; P = 0.008) while neither the WIS nor the proportion of fully continent patients changed in the 3D-EAUS group. Fewer patients in the 3D-EAUS group developed incontinence postoperatively (6.7% vs 33.3%; P = 0.012) and they had better maximum resting pressure and maximum squeeze pressure than the EUA group. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative use of 3D-EAUS had a favourable impact on the outcome of surgical treatment for anal fistulae, especially in those with complex anal fistula. It should be routinely used in the clinical setting.

Abstract
Low testosterone is associated with late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) and obesity. Recently, studies have shown that four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs12150660, rs727428, rs5934505, and rs10822184, are associated with testosterone levels in populations of European descent. Therefore, we investigated whether the SNP loci are related to low testosterone, LOH, or obesity in a Chinese Han population. Ruling out co-morbidities, DNA was prepared from 409 men (aged 40-65 years) with low serum testosterone (defined as total testosterone <11.6 nmol/L) and 1 : 1 normal controls (matched age, body mass index (BMI), and the same living area) who were selected from 6898 males. According to the same standards, 310 men with LOH and 1 : 1 normal controls were selected from 6898 males. Excluding the cases with an unreliable sequencing result, genetic analyses were performed. The minor allele frequencies of the SNP loci rs12150660, rs727428, rs5934505, and rs10822184 were 0.1%, 44.6%, 18.7%, and 38.9%, respectively. rs5934505 was associated with the serum total testosterone and calculated free testosterone (CFT) levels (p = 0.045 and p = 0.021). rs5934505 (C>T) was associated with an increased risk of low total testosterone, low CFT, and LOH and adjusted for other factors, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.01 (1.34-3.01), 2.14 (1.42-3.20), and 1.64 (1.04-2.58). rs10822184 was significantly correlated with weight and BMI (p = 0.035 and p = 0.027). rs10822184 (T>C) was associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity. We adjusted for other factors, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.94 (1.36-2.78) and 1.56 (1.00-2.43). In summary, our study provided convincing evidence that rs5934505 (C>T) was associated with the risk of low testosterone and LOH in Chinese populations. We were the first to find that rs10822184 (T>C) was significantly correlated with the risk of overweight and obesity in Chinese populations. However, further large and functional studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
The development of advanced molecular technologies has ushered in the era of 'omics' science, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and genomics. Genomics, or whole genome approach, has become the most comprehensive investigative method to identify new gene mutations, signal pathways and drug targets for cancers. The purpose of this review is to summarize current second generation sequencing techniques in applied genomics, and to analyze the advantages and/or problems associated with each of the various sequencing platforms. Our understanding of molecular factors associated with tumorigenesis is no longer limited to the mutation of well—known cancer related genes, but may involve a broader range of factors involved in tumor development, including novel somatic mutations, gene fusions, long non—coding RNAs, microRNAs, copy number variations, methylation, and genomic structural variations. Furthermore, these new methods are not limited to analyses of single genetic or epigenetic factor, but offer comprehensive molecule profiling as a more critical and powerful approach to decoding the mystery of tumor development and identifying more reliable cancer biomarkers.

Abstract
Previous studies have reported associations between the functional FABP2 Ala54Thr (rs1799883) polymorphism and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, and metabolic syndrome in different populations with conflicting results. We investigated the association between the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism and T2DM (235 cases, 431 controls), obesity (377 cases, 431 controls), and metabolic syndrome (315 cases, 323 controls) by logistic regression analysis in a Chinese study cohort recruited from Yichang, Hubei Province. We then comprehensively reviewed the association of the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism with T2DM, obesity, and metabolic syndrome via meta-analysis. The strength of association was assessed by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism was significantly associated with obesity (AT vs AA: OR = 2.633, 95%CI = 1.065-6.663, P = 0.036; TT vs AA: OR = 4.160, 95%CI = 1.609-10.757, P = 0.003) and metabolic syndrome (TT vs AA: OR = 2.273, 95%CI = 1.242-4.156, P = 0.008) by logistic regression with adjustment for covariates. However, no significant association was found between T2DM and the FABP2 Ala54Thr polymorphism. We identified 24 studies on T2DM (4517 cases, 5224 controls), 9 studies on obesity (949 cases, 2002 controls), and 6 studies on metabolic syndrome (2194 cases, 3282 controls) by literature search. The meta-analyses revealed significant associations for metabolic syndrome (T allele: OR = 1.179, 95%CI = 1.015-1.362, P = 0.031) and T2DM (T allele: OR = 1.160, 95%CI = 1.08-1.24, P < 0.001), but no association for obesity (T allele: OR = 1.069, 95%CI = 0.925-1.235, P = 0.367).

Abstract
The demand for molecular analysis of aquatic microbial communities in freshwater has highlighted the need for efficient methods of DNA extraction. The centrifugation method and filtration-membrane method are 2 widely used methods for extracting DNA. The objective of this study was to compare the extraction efficiency of 3 methods, including the centrifugation method, filtration-membrane method, and modified filtration-membrane method, by evaluating the quantity and purity of DNA extracts obtained from water. DNA extraction was analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis, ultraviolet-spectroscopy, restriction enzyme digestion, and polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that the modified filtration-membrane method was the most efficient for extracting microbial DNA from freshwater with high integrity and purity and is suitable for molecular applications.

Abstract
Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) regulate the proliferation and differentiation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in brain; however, the mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of mGluR3 on the proliferation of human embryonic neural progenitor cells (NPCs), the expression of cyclin D1 and the activation of signaling pathways of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). The results showed that mGluR3 agonist N-Acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) increased the proliferation of NPCs by increasing cell activity, diameter of neurospheres and cell division. In addition, mGluR3 siRNA decreased the NPC proliferation. The protein expressions of cyclin D1 increased with NAAG treatment and decreased after siRNA treatment. It was also found that activation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK) signaling pathways were involved in the proliferation of NPCs. NAAG increased phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and JNK2 levels, and meanwhile p-p38 level decreased; but p-ERK1/2 and p-JNK2 levels decreased after siRNA treatment, and p-p38 level increased. ERK1/2 inhibitor U0126 and JNK2 inhibitor SP600125 attenuated the increase of proliferation induced by NAAG. These findings demonstrated that mGluR3 promoted the proliferation of human embryonic cortical NPCs and increased cyclin D1 expression by activating ERK1/2 and JNK2 signaling pathways in vitro, suggesting that mGluR3 may be a target molecule for regulating NPC proliferation in brain development.

Abstract
AIM Moderate to severe pain after stapled haemorrhoidopexy (SH) is not uncommon. This study was designed to identify the predictors of postoperative pain after SH in a single centre. METHOD Seventy-six patients with Grade II to IV haemorrhoids who underwent SH were selected from a prospectively compiled database. Preoperative data, including patient characteristics, manometry results and surgical data, were documented. Pain was evaluated during the first 24 h after the operation. Its intensity was classified into three grades according to the visual analogue scale (VAS) score: mild (VAS ≤ 3), moderate (VAS >3 to <5) and severe (VAS ≥ 5). Analgesics were not routinely given but were administered if the patient had moderate or severe pain. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine the predictors of postoperative pain. RESULTS Moderate and severe pain was noted in 43 (58.9%) patients. No patient was readmitted due to persistent anal pain during the month following discharge. Postoperative pain was significantly associated with gender (P = 0.017), age (P = 0.014), first initial sensory volume (P = 0.023) and constipation (P = 0.005) in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis identified male gender as an independent predictor of postoperative moderate to severe pain (P = 0.037, OR = 3.1, 95% CI 1.07-9.09). The initial sensory volume and preoperative coexisting constipation were negative predictors of postoperative moderate to severe pain after SH (P = 0.037, OR = 0.320, 95% CI 0.110-0.934, and P = 0.036, OR = 0.255, 95% CI 0.071-0.913, respectively). CONCLUSION Male gender and the initial sensory volume are predictors of postoperative pain after SH. Anal manometry is recommended before the SH procedure. An active analgesia protocol should be considered for male patients with a low initial sensory volume after SH.

Abstract
The Shangcheng stout salamander (Pachyhynobius shangchengensis) is an endangered amphibian endemic to the Dabie Mountains, southeast China, and is currently threatened by habitat loss and illegal poaching. Here we used the mitochondrial DNA control region sequence (768 bp) to conduct a comprehensive investigation of genetic diversity, phylogeographic pattern, and demographic history of the species across its geographic distribution to assist its conservation. We concluded that the levels of genetic variation are relatively low in all four populations. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that the most likely phylogeographic pattern is [JGT] [KHJ] [TM, BYM]. Two distinct clades were identified in the phylogenetic tree of 28 haplotypes, corresponding to the two southern populations (TM, BYM) and two northern populations (JGT, KHJ). Significant population differentiation (FST) was detected among all populations. Among the four populations, historical demographic analyses (e.g., the g parameter, the Tajima D test, and the Fu Fs test) did not reveal definite information on population expansion except for the BYM population, which had undergone a strong population expansion event. Based on the analysis of a Bayesian skyline plot, the total population underwent a significant population fluctuation around 20 kya. This may have been triggered by the end of the last glacial maximum. In conclusion, the existence of three evolutionarily significant units (BMY-TM, KHJ, and JGT) and four management units (BMY, TM, KHJ, and JGT) is supported by our study.

Abstract
Long-range chromatin interactions control metazoan gene transcription. However, the involvement of intra- and interchromosomal interactions in development and oncogenesis remains unclear. TAL1/SCL is a critical transcription factor required for the development of all hematopoietic lineages; yet, aberrant TAL1 transcription often occurs in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Here, we report that oncogenic TAL1 expression is regulated by different intra- and interchromosomal loops in normal hematopoietic and leukemic cells, respectively. These intra- and interchromosomal loops alter the cell-type-specific enhancers that interact with the TAL1 promoter. We show that human SET1 (hSET1)-mediated H3K4 methylations promote a long-range chromatin loop, which brings the +51 enhancer in close proximity to TAL1 promoter 1 in erythroid cells. The CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) facilitates this long-range enhancer/promoter interaction of the TAL1 locus in erythroid cells while blocking the same enhancer/promoter interaction of the TAL1 locus in human T-cell leukemia. In human T-ALL, a T-cell-specific transcription factor c-Maf-mediated interchromosomal interaction brings the TAL1 promoter into close proximity with a T-cell-specific regulatory element located on chromosome 16, activating aberrant TAL1 oncogene expression. Thus, our study reveals a novel molecular mechanism involving changes in three-dimensional chromatin interactions that activate the TAL1 oncogene in human T-cell leukemia.

Abstract
A theoretical study is made of the Jahn-Teller and other properties of vanadium tetrachloride. Relativistic effective core potentials and corresponding valence spin-orbit operators are used with Gaussian atomic orbitals to compute self-consistent-field and spin-orbit configuration-interaction wave functions. Energy-surface parameters, electronic excitation energies, vibronic energy levels, and g factors are computed. Electron correlation is shown to have a substantial effect on the Jahn-Teller properties. As have others, we find the Jahn-Teller effect in VCl4 to be of the dynamic form.

Abstract
In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of the Ca65Mg15Zn20 bulk metallic glass, which has too fast a degradation rate for biomedical applications, we fabricated the Ca20Mg20Zn20Sr20Yb20 high-entropy bulk metallic glass because of the unique properties of high-entropy alloys. Our results showed that the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior were enhanced. The in vitro tests showed that the Ca20Mg20Zn20Sr20Yb20 high-entropy bulk metallic glass could stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of cultured osteoblasts. The in vivo animal tests showed that the Ca20Mg20Zn20Sr20Yb20 high-entropy bulk metallic glass did not show any obvious degradation after 4 weeks of implantation, and they can promote osteogenesis and new bone formation after 2 weeks of implantation. The improved mechanical properties and corrosion behavior can be attributed to the different chemical composition as well as the formation of a unique high-entropy atomic structure with a maximum degree of disorder.

RNA interference suppression of A100A4 reduces the growth and metastatic phenotype of human renal cancer cells via NF-kB-dependent MMP-2 and bcl-2 pathway. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM S100A4 is a well established marker and mediator of metastatic disease, but the exact mechanisms responsible for the metastasis promoting effects are less well defined. We tested a hypothesis that the S100A4 gene plays a role in the proliferation and invasiveness of human renal cancer cells (RCC) and may be associated with its metastatic spread. MATERIALS AND METHODS The small interference RNA vector pcDNA3.1-S100A4 siRNA was transfected in to the human renal cancer cell lines ACHN, Ketr-3, OS-RC-2, CaKi-2 and HTB-47, then treated with ABT-737 or BB94. Cell apoptosis and cell viability was detected by flow cytometry and MTT assay. Matrigel was used for cell motility and invasion assay. MMP-2, bcl-2 and S100A4 was detected by RT-PCR and western blot assay. NF-kB subunit p65 activity was detected by confocal microscopy assay. We then determine the effect S100A4 sliencing on tumor growth, lung metastasis development in vivo. Immunohistochemistry was used to detected the expression of S100A4, bcl-2, MMP-2, p65 and CD31. RESULTS S100A4 silencing in ACHN cells by RNA interference significantly inhibited NF-kB and NF-kB-mediated MMP-2 and bcl-2 activation and cellular migration, proliferation, and promoted apoptosis. Furthermore, re-expression of S100A4 in S100A4-siRNA-transfected ACHN cells by transient S100A4 cDNA transfection restored the NF-kB and NF-kB-mediated MMP-2 and bcl-2 activation and their high migratory and cellular proliferative ability. An inhibitor ABT-737 (the Bcl-2 antagonist targets Bcl-2) against Bcl-2 suppressed cellular proliferation and promoted apoptosis induced by S100A4 re-expression in S100A4-siRNA-transfected ACHN cells. A inhibitor BB94 against MMPs to neutralize MMP-2 protein suppressed cellular invasion and migration induced by S100A4 re-expression in S100A4-siRNA-transfected ACHN cells. In the prevention model, S100A4 silencing inhibited primary tumor growth by (tumor weight) (76 ± 8%) and (tumor volum) (78 ± 4%) respectively and promoted apoptosis and the formation of lung metastases was inhibited by 89% (p < 0.01). Microvascular density was reduced by 70% (p < 0.01). In addition, S100A4 sliencing inhibited the expression of S100A4 in vivo, followed by the NF-kB, MMP-2 and bcl-2 suppression. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that S100A4 plays a crucial role in proliferation and migratory/invasive processes in human RCC by a mechanism involving activation of NF-kB-bcl-2 and NF-kB-MMP-2 pathway.

Abstract
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), a neuropeptide contained in neural terminals innervating brainstem vagal motor neurons, enhances vagal outflow to modify multisystemic visceral functions and food intake. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are accompanied by impaired vagal functioning. We examined the possibility that impaired brainstem TRH action may contribute to the vagal dysregulation of food intake in Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a T2D model with hyperglycemia and impaired central vagal activation by TRH. Food intake induced by intracisternal injection of TRH analog was reduced significantly by 50% in GK rats, compared to Wistar rats. Similarly, natural food intake in the dark phase or food intake after an overnight fast was reduced by 56-81% in GK rats. Fasting (48h) and refeeding (2h)-associated changes in serum ghrelin, insulin, peptide YY, pancreatic polypeptide and leptin, and the concomitant changes in orexigenic or anorexigenic peptide expression in the brainstem and hypothalamus, all apparent in Wistar rats, were absent or markedly reduced in GK rats, with hormone release stimulated by vagal activation, such as ghrelin and pancreatic polypeptide, decreased substantially. Fasting-induced Fos expression accompanying endogenous brainstem TRH action decreased by 66% and 91%, respectively, in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) in GK rats, compared to Wistar rats. Refeeding abolished fasting-induced Fos-expression in the NTS, while that in the DMV remained in Wistar but not GK rats. These findings indicate that dysfunctional brainstem TRH-elicited vagal impairment contributes to the disturbed food intake in T2D GK rats, and may provide a pathophysiological mechanism which prevents further weight gain in T2D and obesity.

Abstract
Laryngeal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is rare, with only 25 cases reported in the literature. This report presents a case of laryngeal MALT lymphoma in a 35-year-old female with a 6-year history of progressively worsening hoarseness. MALT lymphoma was diagnosed based on biopsy and immunohistochemical analysis. The patient received two cycles of cyclophosphamide + epirubicin + vincristine + prednisone (CHOP) chemo therapy, which was ineffective. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) showed (18)F-FDG accumulation in the larynx only and identified stage IE lymphoma. CHOP chemotherapy was terminated and the patient was treated with radiotherapy. After 3 months (total radiation dose 27 Gy), (18)F-FDG PET/CT scan showed that the laryngeal lesion was in complete remission. A review of the literature on the MEDLINE(®)/PubMed(®) databases regarding laryngeal MALT lymphoma and the use of PET/CT found that radiotherapy is the first-line treatment for stage I and II MALT lymphoma.

Abstract
A current-pulse-induced enhancement effect of transient photovoltage has been discovered in tilted manganite La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) film at room temperature. Here, by applying a pulsed current stimulus before pulse laser irradiation, we observed a significant enhancement of more than 50% in photovoltaic sensitivity. The current-pulse-induced photovoltaic enhancement can be tuned not only by the stimulating current value but also by the stimulating time. Such enhancement is time-sensitive and reproducible. This electrically induced effect, observed at room temperature, has both the benefit of a discovery in materials properties and the promise of applications for thin film manganites in photodetectors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate levels of S100A4 protein in plasma and S100A4 mRNA in tumours from patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC), and correlate these with metastasis, survival and levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). METHODS Plasma S100A4 and VEGF protein concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assays in 39 healthy subjects and 68 consecutive patients with untreated CCRCC. Levels of S100A4 and VEGF mRNA in tumour and matched control (healthy) tissue samples were measured using realtime quantitative reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction. Findings were analysed with respect to clinico pathological characteristics. RESULTS Plasma VEGF concentrations were higher in patients with CCRCC than in healthy subjects. S100A4 and VEGF mRNA levels were up-regulated in CCRCC tumour tissue compared with control tissue samples. Logistic regression analysis revealed that up-regulated tumour S100A4 and VEGF mRNA levels were independent risk factors for the presence of invasion and/or metastasis. CONCLUSIONS S100A4 and VEGF are associated with tumour invasion and metastasis, and may be useful prognostic markers in patients with CCRCC. S100A4 and VEGF may represent potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
In this study, 53 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from Xueo, a traditional fermented yak milk in the western Sichuan Plateau of China, were identified and their use in fermented milk was evaluated. All gram-positive and catalase-negative strains were divided into 6 groups at the level of 87% similarity using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis. These groups were identified as 6 species using 16S rDNA sequence analysis and atpA gene analysis. The dominant LAB strains in Xueo were Enterococcus durans, Lactobacillus fermentum, and Lactobacillus paracasei, accounting for 45.3, 22.6, and 17.0% of isolates, respectively. Milk fermented with most of the representative strains was high in quality, exhibiting relatively high viscosity, moderate acidity, good sensory quality, and high counts of viable LAB. Fermented milk of E. durans SCA16 and L. fermentum SCA52 achieved the highest scores for overall sensory quality. Most strains displayed antimicrobial activity against at least 1 of 9 spoilage microorganisms. Lactic acid was the main factor inhibiting the growth of spoilage bacteria, and H(2)O(2) was also inhibitory to some extent. Excluding the influence of acid and H(2)O(2), strains SCA52 (L. fermentum) and SCA7 (Lactobacillus plantarum) were antagonistic against some of the indicators, suggesting that the 2 strains may produce a bacteriocin-like substance. Therefore, the development of superior strains isolated from Xueo to ferment milk with similar flavor and texture to Xueo is expected.

A number of genetic markers for virulence of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in different hosts have been identified. However, we isolated two H5N1 AIVs, A/Chicken/Jiangsu/k0402/2010(CK/10) and A/Goose/Jiangsu/k0403/2010(GS/10) with similar genetic background, but most well-defined molecular markers for virulence in mammals and avian species were not found in both viral genomes. In addition, pathogenicity of this pair of viruses in different hosts remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated their pathogenicity in chickens, mice, ducks and guinea pigs. Infection of CK/10 and GS/10 in chickens caused 100% mortality within 24 h. Mouse experiment showed that CK/10 was highly pathogenic (MLD50 = 0.33 log10 EID50), whereas GS/10 was avirulent (MLD50 > 6.32 log10 EID50). Interestingly, the virulence of CK/10 in ducks (DLD50 = 3.83 log10 EID50) was higher than that of GS/10 (DLD50 = 7.7 log10 EID50), which correlated with viral pathogenicity in mice. Although CK/10 and GS/10 showed distinct pathogenicity in mice, they both were lethal to guinea pigs, with CK/10 replicating to higher titres in airways than GS/10. Collectively, these findings suggest that AIVs with similar genetic backgrounds may exhibit distinct pathogenicity in specific hosts and that some unknown molecular markers for virulence may exist and need to be identified.

Abstract
We undertook this study to determine the minimum amount of coronoid necessary to stabilise an otherwise intact elbow joint. Regan-Morrey types II and III, plus medial and lateral oblique coronoid fractures, collectively termed type IV fractures, were simulated in nine fresh cadavers. An electromagnetic tracking system defined the three-dimensional stability of the ulna relative to the humerus. The coronoid surface area accounts for 59% of the anterior articulation. Alteration in valgus, internal and external rotation occurred only with a type III coronoid fracture, accounting for 68% of the coronoid and 40% of the entire articular surface. A type II fracture removed 42% of the coronoid articulation and 25% of the entire articular surface but was associated with valgus and external rotational changes only when the radial head was removed, thereby removing 67% of the articular surface. We conclude that all type III fractures, as defined here, are unstable, even with intact ligaments and a radial head. However, a type II deficiency is stable unless the radial head is removed. Our study suggests that isolated medial-oblique or lateral-oblique fractures, and even a type II fracture with intact ligaments and a functional radial head, can be clinically stable, which is consistent with clinical observation.

Abstract
We have fabricated and characterized a weak light photodetector in a heterojunction composed of manganite La0.4Ca0.6MnO3 and n-type Si. High-sensitivity photoresponse properties were investigated. The responsivities of open-circuit photovoltage and short-circuit photocurrent reach ∼1000 V/mJ and ∼30 A/mJ, respectively, without any amplification bias under irradiation by 20-ps-wide and 355, 532, and 1064-nm-wavelength laser pulses in nanojoule to microjoule order. The present results demonstrate that the manganite-based heterojunction on Si substrate has potential applications in weak light detection from ultraviolet to near-infrared light.

Abstract
Soil columns were set up to survey the bacterial community in the soil for septic tank effluent treatment. When bio-clogging occurred in the soil columns, the effluent from the columns was in poorer quality. To evaluate changes of the soil bacterial community in response to bio-clogging, the bacterial community was characterized by DNA gene sequences from soil samples after polymerase chain reaction coupled with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis process. Correspondence analysis showed that Proteobacteria related bacteria were the main bacteria within the soil when treating septic tank effluent. However, Betaproteobacteria related bacteria were the dominant microorganisms in the normal soil, whereas Alphaproteobacteria related bacteria were more abundant in the clogged soil. This study provided insight into changes of the soil bacterial community in response to bio-clogging. The results can supply some useful information for the design and management of soil infiltration systems.
