Abstract
OBJECTIVE To familiarize the reader with the epidemiology, diagnosis, and infectious and zoonotic potential of methicillin-resistant staphylococci. DATA SOURCES Original research publications, scientific reviews and abstracts, case reports, and conference proceedings. HUMAN DATA SYNTHESIS Staphylococcus aureus is a common human commensal organism; acquisition of genes encoding an altered penicillin-binding protein confers resistance to beta-lactam antimicrobial drugs. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are often resistant to non-beta-lactam antimicrobial drugs as well. Originally described as an important cause of nosocomial infection, MRSA colonization and infection are now often identified in humans outside healthcare settings. Like other S. aureus, MRSA may be present without clinical illness. However, when they do cause infection the consequences can be extremely serious. VETERINARY DATA SYNTHESIS The major domestic animal species, including pets and livestock, may become contaminated, colonized, or infected with methicillin-resistant staphylococci, including MRSA. Dogs and cats are more likely to be colonized/infected with Staphylococcus pseudintermedius than S. aureus, but this pathogen can acquire genes encoding methicillin resistance (ie, MRSP). Diagnosis of MRSA or MRSP has implications not only for treatment of infected animals, but for potential zoonotic transmission. CONCLUSIONS MRSA infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. Animals may be contaminated, colonized, or infected with MRSA, with implications for the animal's health and as a potential reservoir for human infection. Staphylococci other than S. aureus may also acquire genes for methicillin resistance, and these species can also result in animal and occasionally human morbidity or mortality.

Abstract
Intradermal skin testing (IDST) and allergen-specific IgE determination are used to determine allergen sensitization. In cats, studies have found poor correlation between the two tests. However, these studies were mainly conducted in pet cats sensitized to unknown allergens with unknown dose and duration of exposure. We hypothesized that in an experimental model of allergic sensitization where these variables are controlled, IDST would demonstrate greater sensitivity and specificity than would serum allergen-specific IgE determination. A model of feline asthma employing Bermuda grass allergen (BGA) or house dust mite allergen (HDMA) was used to test the hypothesis. Thirteen cats were assigned to undergo sensitization to BGA, HDMA or saline (placebo). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid confirmed development of an asthmatic phenotype. Serum collection and IDST were performed on D0, D28 and D50. A portion of serum was pooled, and an aliquot heat inactivated (HI) to destroy IgE. Individual, pooled, and pooled HI samples were used for allergen-specific IgE determination using an Fc epsilon R1 alpha-based ELISA; pooled samples were also analyzed using an enzymoimmunometric assay. Sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) were calculated for IDST and for BGA- and HDMA-specific IgE. Combined results for IDST found SE=90.9%, SP=86.7%, PPV=83.3%, and NPV=92.9%. For ELISA-based serum IgE testing, the SE=22.7%, SP=100%, PPV=100% and NPV=63.8%. The enzymoimmunometric assay did not detect sensitizing IgE, but did detect IgE reactivity to a variety of irrelevant allergens (even in HI samples). Sensitivity of IDST was greater than sensitivity of serum IgE measurement supporting use as a screening test for aeroallergens. Both IDST and allergen-specific IgE determination via ELISA were specific; either test can be used to guide selection of allergens for immunotherapy. The enzymoimmunometric assay was unreliable and cannot be recommended.

Abstract
Cats with inflammatory bronchial disease are usually treated with glucocorticoid (GC) drugs to reduce airway inflammation. Inhalant GC delivery can preserve airway effects while systemic effects are minimized. An appropriate dosage regimen for inhaled GC in cats has not been investigated. A blinded, randomized, cross-over study design was used to investigate the ability of three different dosages of the inhalant GC fluticasone propionate delivered by metered dose inhaler to ameliorate eosinophilic airway inflammation in cats with experimentally induced allergic airway inflammation. Further, suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) at each dose was assessed. Fluticasone administered at dosages of 44, 110, or 220 microg q 12h reduced airway eosinophilia by 74%, 82%, or 81%, respectively (no difference). None of the dose regimens tested caused HPAA suppression. We conclude that a twice daily dosage of 44 microg fluticasone should be evaluated for the management of cats with naturally occurring inflammatory bronchial disease.

Abstract
Rush immunotherapy (RIT) is effective for the treatment of experimental feline allergic asthma. In humans, the safety profile of immunotherapy is improved by delivering allergen by a mucosal route. We hypothesized that mucosal (intranasal) RIT would have similar efficacy to subcutaneous RIT with improved safety. Twelve cats sensitized and challenged with Bermuda grass allergen (BGA) were randomized to receive subcutaneous (SC) or intranasal (IN) RIT. Increasing doses of BGA (20-200 microg) were administered over 24h followed by 200 microg BGA weekly as maintenance. Adverse reactions were recorded. Clinical respiratory scores after BGA aerosol challenge, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) % eosinophils, and cytokine concentrations were measured before RIT (day 1) and at months 1, 3 and 6 (M1, M3, M6). More adverse events were recorded with SC RIT (n=12) compared with IN RIT (n=6). Respiratory scores were lower by M6 compared with D1 in both the groups. The % BALF eosinophils declined significantly after RIT for both groups (mean+/-SEM, SC RIT D1 62+/-12, M6 9+/-4; IN RIT D1 54+/-9, M6 14+/-6). The BALF IL-4:IFN-gamma ratio significantly decreased over time in the IN RIT group (mean+/-SEM, D1 2.4+/-0.2, M6 1.0+/-0.2). While both protocols decreased eosinophilic airway inflammation, the SC RIT protocol did not cause life-threatening adverse events and demonstrated more consistent resolution of clinical signs after allergen challenge. Either protocol could be considered for the treatment of feline allergic asthma.

Abstract
Successful treatment of naturally occurring periocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in horses with photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been performed by injecting residual tumor with verteporfin and applying laser irradiation immediately following injection. This study used a murine model to evaluate the influence of time between intralesional injection of verteporfin to laser irradiation on tumor growth inhibition with PDT. Mice were randomized into six groups (n=10/group). Each tumor was injected with either 0.1mg/cm(3) of verteporfin (Tx) or 5% dextrose in water (C). Tx and C groups 1, 2, and 3 were irradiated at 1, 30, and 180min after injection. Wilcoxon-rank sum test (P< or =0.05) was performed to determine the relative change in tumor volume (RCTV) between groups. Statistical significance was demonstrated between treatment groups. Although verteporfin-PDT treated mice in Tx1 and Tx2 demonstrated a lower RCTV compared to C1 and C2 mice, the differences were not statistically significant.

Abstract
Every breath holds the potential to introduce infectious organisms and irritating particulates into the respiratory tract. Despite this continuous exposure, the lungs usually remain sterile. Further, potential pathogens are distinguished from innocuous particulates, thus sparing the respiratory tract from damaging inflammation. The article reviews the complex defenses used to protect the respiratory tract and also discusses the implications of failed defense systems.

Abstract
Allergic asthma is driven by relative overexpression of Th2 cell-derived cytokines in response to aeroallergens. In independent studies, both allergen-specific rush immunotherapy (RIT) and CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) showed promise in blunting eosinophilic inflammation in a model of feline allergic asthma. We hypothesized that RIT using allergen and CpG ODN would work synergistically to dampen the asthmatic phenotype in experimentally asthmatic cats. Twelve cats with asthma induced using Bermuda grass allergen (BGA) were studied. Of these, six were administered adjuvanted BGA RIT using CpG ODN #2142; six were administered placebo (saline) RIT and later crossed over to adjuvanted RIT. Over 2 days, subcutaneous CpG ODN (0.5ng/kg) with BGA (increasing doses every 2h from 20 to 200microg) was administered. Adverse events were recorded and compared with historical controls. Percentage of eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), % peripheral CD4+CD25+ T regulatory cells (Tregs), lymphocyte proliferation in response to ConA, and cytokine concentrations in BALF were measured over 2 months. Group mean BALF % eosinophils for the adjuvanted RIT cats were significantly lower at week 1 and month 1 (p=0.03 for both), and marginally significantly lower at month 2 (p=0.09) compared with placebo RIT cats. By the end of the study, 8/12 treated cats had BALF % eosinophils within the reference range for healthy cats. Adjuvanted RIT, but not placebo RIT, cats had significant decreases in the ConA stimulation index over time (p=0.05). BALF IL-4 concentrations were significantly higher at week 1 in adjuvanted RIT cats compared with baseline and month 2, and also with placebo RIT cats at week 1. No significant differences were detected between treatments or over time for IL-10 or IFN-gamma concentrations in BALF or for %Tregs cells in peripheral blood. Adjuvanted RIT using CpG ODN in experimental feline asthma dampens eosinophilic airway inflammation. Adverse effects associated with adjuvanted RIT were less severe compared with a historical, non-adjuvanted RIT protocol. The exact mechanism(s) by which adjuvanted RIT alters the aberrant allergic immune response were not elucidated in this study.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of local photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin on tumor growth inhibition of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a murine model. SCC was implanted in 85 nude mice by subcutaneous injection of A-431 SCC cells. Treatment groups (10 mice/group) received an intra-tumoral injection of verteporfin dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or 5% dextrose solution at a dose of 0.01 or 0.1mg/cm3. Controls received only solvent, or no injectate. All groups received identical light illumination (100J/cm2). Relative change in tumor volume (RCTV) at day 30 was compared between groups using the Wilcoxon rank sum test (P< 0.05). Local PDT with verteporfin at a dose of 0.1mg/cm3 resulted in significantly lower RCTV at day 30 compared to controls. Choice of solvent (DMSO versus D5W) did not affect the results. Local PDT may be an effective adjunctive therapy for the treatment of periocular equine SCC.

Abstract
Several noninfectious nonneoplastic interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) have been recognized in dogs and cats. Overall, these ILDs are poorly characterized in dogs and cats, although awareness of the conditions based on descriptions of clinical case series may be increasing. Lung biopsy remains crucial to the diagnosis, characterization, and classification of ILDs. Histopathologic findings can help to guide clinicians in selecting appropriate therapy and providing an accurate prognosis to pet owners. Only with definitive recognition of these pulmonary conditions can our knowledge of the clinical course and response to therapy be improved.

Abstract
A 1.5-year-old Doberman pinscher was presented with sudden-onset of fever and malaise. Twelve days prior to presentation, fenbendazole therapy was initiated for a suspected lungworm infection. Results of a complete blood count on presentation showed pancytopenia, while histopathological evaluation of a bone marrow core sample revealed bone marrow hypoplasia of undetermined etiology. Bactericidal antibiotics and fluid therapy, as well as discontinuation of fenbendazole administration, led to a complete resolution of clinical and hematological abnormalities within 15 days. An idiosyncratic reaction to fenbendazole was suspected based on the absence of infectious, neoplastic, autoimmune, and toxic etiologies, as well as resolution of clinical signs and pancytopenia upon drug withdrawal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical and immunologic response in healthy dogs to infusions of human serum albumin (HSA). ANIMALS 9 healthy purpose-bred mixed-breed dogs. PROCEDURES Each dog was administered a 25% HSA solution once or twice. Various physical examination and laboratory variables were serially evaluated. Antibody against HSA was assayed before and after infusion by use of an ELISA. Intradermal testing was also conducted. A repeated-measures ANOVA or Friedman repeated-measures ANOVA on ranks was used to compare results for the variables. RESULTS Adverse clinical reactions were observed after the first or second infusion in 3 dogs. Anaphylactoid reactions were observed in 1 of 9 dogs during the first infusion and in 2 of 2 dogs administered a second infusion. Two dogs developed severe edema and urticaria 6 or 7 days after an initial infusion. All dogs developed anti-HSA antibodies. Positive responses for ID tests were observed in 8 of 9 dogs. Short-term increases were detected in blood protein, total bilirubin, and calcium concentrations after HSA infusion. Serum cholesterol concentrations and platelet counts decreased after HSA infusion. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Administration of HSA resulted in profound reactions in 2 of 9 dogs administered a single infusion and in 2 of 2 dogs administered a second infusion. This indicates that there is risk of life-threatening adverse reactions to HSA infusion in healthy dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the reliability and accuracy of a predictive rectal thermometer, an infrared auricular thermometer designed for veterinary use, and a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip for measurement of core body temperature over various temperature conditions in dogs. DESIGN Prospective study. ANIMALS 8 purpose-bred dogs. PROCEDURES A minimum of 7 days prior to study commencement, a subcutaneous temperature-sensing microchip was implanted in 1 of 3 locations (interscapular, lateral aspect of shoulder, or sacral region) in each dog. For comparison with temperatures measured via rectal thermometer, infrared auricular thermometer, and microchip, core body temperature was measured via a thermistor-tipped pulmonary artery (TTPA) catheter. Hypothermia was induced during anesthesia at the time of TTPA catheter placement; on 3 occasions after placement of the catheter, hyperthermia was induced via administration of a low dose of endotoxin. Near-simultaneous duplicate temperature measurements were recorded from the TTPA catheter, the rectal thermometer, auricular thermometer, and subcutaneous microchips during hypothermia, euthermia, and hyperthermia. Reliability (variability) of temperature measurement for each device and agreement between each device measurement and core body temperature were assessed. RESULTS Variability between duplicate near-simultaneous temperature measurements was greatest for the auricular thermometer and least for the TTPA catheter. Measurements obtained by use of the rectal thermometer were in closest agreement with core body temperature; for all other devices, temperature readings typically underestimated core body temperature. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Among the 3 methods of temperature measurement, rectal thermometry provided the most accurate estimation of core body temperature in dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the most common etiologic diagnosis and any historical, physical, or other diagnostic variables associated with a definitive etiologic diagnosis for chronic nasal discharge in cats. Design-Retrospective case series. ANIMALS 75 cats with nasal discharge of >/= 1 month's duration. PROCEDURES Medical records of affected cats were reviewed for information on signalment, clinical signs, duration and type of nasal discharge, results of clinical examination, laboratory findings, and advanced imaging findings. RESULTS A specific etiologic diagnosis for nasal discharge was identified in only 36% of cats. Neoplasia (carcinoma or lymphoma) was the most common etiologic diagnosis. Character and location of nasal discharge did not contribute greatly toward a specific etiologic diagnosis. Sneezing and vomiting were the most common concurrent clinical signs. Routine CBC, serum biochemical panel, and urinalysis did not contribute to a specific etiologic diagnosis. An etiologic diagnosis was more likely in older cats and cats that underwent advanced imaging studies and nasal biopsy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Although advanced diagnostic testing, including imaging studies and biopsy, increases the likelihood of achieving an etiologic diagnosis, the cause of chronic nasal discharge in cats often remains elusive.

Abstract
Cryopreserved equine ocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was inoculated subcutaneously into 15 athymic nude and 15 SCID mice. Xenotransplantation resulted in tumor growth in two athymic nude mice and 1 SCID mouse. Histological appearance and immunohistochemical characterization using cytokeratin 5/6 markers and p53 markers of the tumor grown in mice was in full accord with the original equine tumors. No evidence of metastasis was noted in any mouse. This model may serve as a relevant in vivo model for studying the biology of equine ocular SCC and for the testing of new therapeutic modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the emergence of continuous glucose monitoring systems being used to provide a detailed glucose picture in humans, a commercially available system (CGMS(R), Medtronic Minimed, Northridge, CA) was examined for use in veterinary species. METHODS Adult, clinically normal horses (n = 7), cats (n = 3), dogs (n = 4), and cows (n = 5) were studied. Cats (n = 4), dogs (n = 5), and one horse with diabetes were included in the study. Several of the normal horses, including the horse with diabetes, and one cow were subjected to an intravenous glucose tolerance test. The CGMS was attached to each animal, and the recorded interstitial glucose concentrations were compared with whole blood glucose concentrations as determined by a point-of-care glucose meter. Events such as insulin administration, feeding, travel, or administration of intravenous glucose were all noted and compared with results from the CGMS. RESULTS There was a positive correlation between interstitial and whole blood glucose concentrations for all the clinically normal species, those with diabetes mellitus, and those receiving intravenous glucose. Events such as feeding, glucose or insulin administration, and transport to the clinic were noted by the owner or clinician and could be identified on the graph and correlated with time of occurrence. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that the use of the CGMS is valid for use in the species examined. Use of this system alleviated the need for multiple blood samples and the stress associated with obtaining those samples. This system may provide greater monitoring capabilities in patients with diabetes and promote the diagnostic and research potential of serial glucose monitoring in veterinary species.

Abstract
Cytauxzoon felis produces a disease in domestic cats in the Midwest (U.S.A.), which often leads to a fatal outcome. Although the clinical disease process is well described, there are still many unanswered questions about this organism. For example, it is unknown whether species of ticks other than Dermacentor variabilis can serve as vectors for transmission. With recent reports of surviving cats from limited geographic areas, another relevant question is the potential for genetically less virulent organism strains. This study evaluated 352 individual or pooled tick samples (1,362 total ticks) for the presence of C. felis small subunit ribosomal RNA and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) region genes using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These ticks were collected from dogs and cats in several Missouri counties, including 10 from cats diagnosed with cytauxzoonosis. Only 3 positive C. felis samples were identified in Amblyomma americanum nymphs, and there was very limited genetic variation noted in both genes. The small number of positive samples did not allow the study to determine which PCR analysis was more sensitive. This is the first known report of ITS-1 gene identification and sequencing for C. felis. It is also the first published investigation of genetic variation in C. felis.
