Abstract
Tenderness, flavour and colour are the most important quality traits of beef that are influenced by breed and age. Suckler calves (SC) produce very tender, high-quality meat. Extensively growing, small-framed breeds are known for high-quality beef, but information about the particularly small Dexter cattle (D) is yet unavailable. Eight D and seven Charolais-crossbreed SC were kept for 11 weeks on alpine pastures to be able to compare their meat quality. The SC were kept with their dams. The animals of the two breeds were slaughtered at different ages (D: 15 months and SC: 7 months) consistent with their respective production system conventions. Although this meant that age and breed effects were confounded, slaughter took place at the same carcass fatness score, thereby avoiding a confounding effect on meat quality. Quality of the carcass and of two muscles (M. biceps femoris, M. longissimus thoracis) was analysed. Despite being older, D had lower body and carcass weights, dressing percentage and bodyweight gains than SC. Dexter meat was darker than SC meat. Shear force did not differ between D and SC in the M. longissimus thoracis but was higher in the M. biceps femoris from D than from SC. Sensory analysis by a trained panel demonstrated an overall preference for D meat, associated with more favourable flavour and juiciness. Tenderness was not rated differently. Despite the unfavourable darker colour of D compared with SC meat, its characteristic flavour might attract consumers in a high-price niche market. For a more comprehensive characterisation, sensory evaluation of additional muscles is required. Additional measurements on a larger number of animals and muscles are required.

Abstract
Chick culling is an efficient and cost-effective method in modern poultry farming, but it raises ethical concerns. Dual-purpose poultry (DP), in which males are fattened and females are used for egg production, is currently the most realistic alternative to culling, as in ovo sexing is not yet viable for practical application. Consumers' acceptance of DP products and their willingness to pay (WTP) for them have not been studied yet, and we expect that both aspects are closely related to the acceptance of and WTP for products from systems claiming beyond-conventional animal welfare, such as organic products. Results from a survey conducted among 402 consumers at 8 Swiss supermarkets revealed that the practice of chick culling was largely unknown (75% of respondents). Generally, respondents' knowledge about poultry production was low. The DP alternative was preferred to chick culling, but no preference emerged between DP and in ovo sexing. Furthermore, the WTP for DP products was proportionally lower for chicken than for eggs, probably because of the different price elasticity between these products. A regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing consumers' WTP for DP products. Consumers' WTP was positively related to knowledge about poultry production, habits tied to purchasing organic or free-range poultry products, and familiarity with DP products. Therefore, a combination of the DP alternative with an organic label is recommended.

Abstract
In the present study, a methanol-fluorescence-based HPLC method was validated for its use to quantify α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol in raw milk, whole UHT milk, partially skimmed UHT milk, whole pasteurized milk, and partially skimmed pasteurized milk. Repeatability and reproducibility, calculated as relative standard deviation of 10 measurements within the same day and 30 measurements across 3 d, respectively, were always below 5% for both tocopherols concentrations and retention times. Recovery was assessed through 3 spiking levels and it ranged from 89 to 107%. The method was able to detect the expected declines in tocopherols in milk exposed to UHT or skimming treatments. Vitamin E, calculated as the sum of α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol, was similar in whole pasteurized and raw milk, averaging 1.57 and 1.56 mg/L, respectively, followed by whole UHT (1.33 mg/L), partially skimmed pasteurized (0.77 mg/L), and partially skimmed UHT milk (0.61 mg/L).

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Whether the immunosuppressive regimen is associated with micro- and macro-vascular status in pediatric kidney transplant recipients (KTx) is unknown. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional, case-control study in 44 pediatric KTx patients on either everolimus (EVR) plus calcineurin inhibitor or standard treatment, i.e. mycophenolate mofetil plus calcineurin inhibitor. Measurement of carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) via ultrasound, central pulse wave velocity (PWV) by a cuff-based oscillometric technique, and skin microvascular blood flow during local heating via laser-Doppler-fluximetry (LDF) served as marker of subclinical vascular disease. Serum concentrations of angiopoietin-1 and -2, fibroblast-growth factor 23 (FGF23) and soluble klotho were measured. RESULTS EVR-treated patients exhibited a similar degree of hypertension, increased cIMT, elevated pro-inflammatory angiopoietin-2, and diminished endothelial survival factor angiopoietin-1 compared to healthy children but presented with a twofold more reduced skin micro-vascular function compared to standard treatment (each p< 0.001). By contrast, PWV and soluble klotho levels were normal in both groups. CONCLUSION Endothelial dysfunction seems more frequent in KTx patients on EVR-based immunosuppressive regimen compared to standard immunosuppression.

Abstract
Evaluation and mitigation of enteric methane (CH4) emissions from ruminant livestock, in particular from dairy cows, have acquired global importance for sustainable, climate-smart cattle production. Based on CH4 reference measurements obtained with the SF6 tracer technique to determine ruminal CH4 production, a current equation permits evaluation of individual daily CH4 emissions of dairy cows based on milk Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectra. However, the respiration chamber (RC) technique is considered to be more accurate than SF6 to measure CH4 production from cattle. This study aimed to develop an equation that allows estimating CH4 emissions of lactating cows recorded in an RC from corresponding milk FT-MIR spectra and to challenge its robustness and relevance through validation processes and its application on a milk spectral database. This would permit confirming the conclusions drawn with the existing equation based on SF6 reference measurements regarding the potential to estimate daily CH4 emissions of dairy cows from milk FT-MIR spectra. A total of 584 RC reference CH4 measurements (mean ± standard deviation of 400 ± 72 g of CH4/d) and corresponding standardized milk mid-infrared spectra were obtained from 148 individual lactating cows between 7 and 321 d in milk in 5 European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, France, and Northern Ireland). The developed equation based on RC measurements showed calibration and cross-validation coefficients of determination of 0.65 and 0.57, respectively, which is lower than those obtained earlier by the equation based on 532 SF6 measurements (0.74 and 0.70, respectively). This means that the RC-based model is unable to explain the variability observed in the corresponding reference data as well as the SF6-based model. The standard errors of calibration and cross-validation were lower for the RC model (43 and 47 g/d vs. 66 and 70 g/d for the SF6 version, respectively), indicating that the model based on RC data was closer to actual values. The root mean squared error (RMSE) of calibration of 42 g/d represents only 10% of the overall daily CH4 production, which is 23 g/d lower than the RMSE for the SF6-based equation. During the external validation step an RMSE of 62 g/d was observed. When the RC equation was applied to a standardized spectral database of milk recordings collected in the Walloon region of Belgium between January 2012 and December 2017 (1,515,137 spectra from 132,658 lactating cows in 1,176 different herds), an average ± standard deviation of 446 ± 51 g of CH4/d was estimated, which is consistent with the range of the values measured using both RC and SF6 techniques. This study confirmed that milk FT-MIR spectra could be used as a potential proxy to estimate daily CH4 emissions from dairy cows provided that the variability to predict is covered by the model.

Abstract
MELODI (Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Initiative) is a European radiation protection research platform with focus on research on health risks after exposure to low-dose ionising radiation. It was founded in 2010 and currently includes 44 members from 18 countries. A major activity of MELODI is the continuous development of a long-term European Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) on low-dose risk for radiation protection. The SRA is intended to identify priorities for national and European radiation protection research programs as a basis for the preparation of competitive calls at the European level. Among those key priorities is the improvement of health risk estimates for exposures close to the dose limits for workers and to reference levels for the population in emergency situations. Another activity of MELODI is to ensure the availability of European key infrastructures for research activities, and the long-term maintenance of competences in radiation research via an integrated European approach for training and education. The MELODI SRA identifies three key research topics in low dose or low dose-rate radiation risk research: (1) dose and dose rate dependence of cancer risk, (2) radiation-induced non-cancer effects and (3) individual radiation sensitivity. The research required to improve the evidence base for each of the three key topics relates to three research lines: (1) research to improve understanding of the mechanisms contributing to radiogenic diseases, (2) epidemiological research to improve health risk evaluation of radiation exposure and (3) research to address the effects and risks associated with internal exposures, differing radiation qualities and inhomogeneous exposures. Abstract
The interaction between the sequence of feeding of hay and concentrate and the hydrothermal processing of barley in alleviating concentrate effects on intake, and hindgut fermentation in horses was tested. Six Arabian mares (4-10 years of age, 410 ± 35 kg body weight) were used to evaluate the effects of feeding sequence (FS) and type of barley (TB) on intake, and faecal volatile fatty acids (VFA), activities of α-amylase (AA: EC 3.2.1.1), carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase: EC 3.2.1.4), microcrystalline cellulase (MCCase: EC 3.2.1.91) and general filter paper degrading activity (FPD). Mares were offered a ration of air-dried alfalfa and concentrate (70:30 as-fed) in four subsequent periods of 14 days including 8 days of adaptation and 6 days of sampling. In each period and each meal, mares received concentrate either 30 min after (HC) or 30 min before (CH) alfalfa hay. Barley was either milled or boiled in water. Rectal samples were grabbed directly from rectum once per period. Mares subjected to CH had higher dry matter intakes than mares under HC regime. The acetate:propionate ratio (A:P ratio) in rectal content was higher with CH than HC. The AA activity was higher under CH than under HC. Mares fed boiled barley had lower rectal concentrations of VFA and propionate and a higher A:P ratio than mares fed milled barley. Furthermore, the rectal content showed a higher MCCase activity but a lower AA activity when mares were fed boiled compared with milled barley. Interactions between FS and TB were observed with respect to CMCase activity, and concentrations of propionate and valerate. In conclusion, the present results suggest that both, feeding concentrate before hay and boiling the barley, might improve the hindgut environment in Arabian mares, and that the two measures were mostly additive and sometimes even synergistic.

Abstract
The fatty acid (FA) profile of ghee produced from milk of cattle–yak hybrids grazing five mountain pasture sites along a high-alpine transhumance route in Nepal was analysed. Pastures differed in altitude above sea level (2600–4500 m), time period of being grazed and phytochemical composition of the swards. Additionally, a comparison of ghee from purebred yak and hybrid was performed, with samples produced at two of the sites. Pasture site had a strong effect on almost all FAs. Proportions of oleic, linoleic and α-linolenic acid in ghee were smallest on the highest pasture at 4500 m where the largest condensed tannin concentrations in the forages were found. No systematic site effects were found for c9,t11 conjugated linoleic acid and total polyunsaturated FAs. Ghee produced from the hybrids’ milk was richer in major functional FAs such as α-linolenic and linoleic acid, while yak ghee contained more saturated FAs and eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids.

Abstract
In order to identify new ways to mitigate methane emissions from ruminants, six medicinal plants, Achyranthes aspera, Azadirachta indica, Andrographis paniculata, Helicteres isora, Tinospora cordifolia and Piper longum, were evaluated in vitro with respect to ruminal fermentation and methanogenesis. A three-stage approach with n = 6 per treatment was applied. Two 24-h Hohenheim gas test experiments were performed by incubating the plants first as sole substrate and then added to a basal diet (10 g/kg diet DM). Finally, in a 10-day Rusitec experiment, A. paniculata, P. longum and T. cordifolia were supplemented individually and in all binary combinations to a basal diet (25 g/kg DM). Provided as sole substrate, all plants, except P. longum, decreased methane and carbon dioxide production (P < 0.05), and reduced the methane : short-chain fatty acid ratio (P < 0.05) in the Hohenheim gas test. In Rusitec, none of the individual supplements decreased methane production. The combination of A. paniculata with P. longum as a supplement was effective in mitigating the methane : carbon dioxide ratio and simultaneously maintaining feeding value. In conclusion, all medicinal plants incubated as sole substrate, except P. longum, possess anti-methanogenic properties, especially T. cordifolia, A. indica and H. isora. When supplemented at the levels investigated, they were mostly neutral with respect to rumen fermentation and nutrient digestion. Combining A. paniculata with P. longum mitigated methane without side effects on general ruminal fermentation. Further investigations, carried out in vivo, will demonstrate how useful this plant combination is in ruminant nutrition.

Abstract
It is still not fully understood whether and how factors such as time, age and smoking modify the relationship between lung cancer and radon at low exposures and exposure rates. Improved knowledge is necessary for the dose conversion of radon in working level month (WLM) into effective dose, as currently discussed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). An update of the German uranium miner cohort study (n = 58,974 men) with a 10-year extension of mortality follow-up (1946-2013) was used to further examine this issue. Internal Poisson regression was applied to estimate the excess relative risk (ERR) for lung cancer mortality per unit of cumulative radon exposure in WLM with exponential time-related effect modifiers. In the full cohort restricted to <100 WLM the estimated overall ERR/WLM was 0.006 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.003; 0.010] based on 1,254 lung cancer deaths and 1,620,190 person-years at risk. Both age at and time since exposure turned out to be important modifiers of the ERR/WLM and were included in the final model. Here, the ERR/WLM centered on age at exposure of 30 years, and 20 years since exposure was 0.016 (95% CI: 0.008; 0.028). This value decreased statistically significantly by approximately 40% and 60% for each 10-year increase in age at exposure and time since exposure, respectively. The joint effect of smoking and radon exposure was investigated in the sub-cohort of miners hired in 1960 or later, which includes data on smoking status. The centered ERR/WLM was slightly higher for non/light smokers compared to moderate/heavy smokers (0.022 versus 0.013). The current findings provide evidence for an increased lung cancer risk at low radon exposures or exposure rates that is modified by age and time. The observed risk is lower, but statistically compatible to those of other miner studies at low exposures or exposure rates. These findings reject an additive- and support a sub- to (supra-) multiplicative interaction between smoking and radon.

Abstract
Lightweight (LW) piglets from large litters display impaired growth performance compared with heavier littermates. This study investigated the growth performance and muscle development of early-weaned LW piglets (birthweight <1.2 kg) from large litters (17.3 ± 3.0 total born per litter), fed ad libitum a milk replacer supplemented with either l-carnitine (CAR) or l-arginine (ARG) from day 7 to day 28 of age. In total, 36 female and entire male Swiss Large White piglets, weaned on day 7 of age, were artificially reared in pairs in rescue decks. They were allocated to one of three dietary treatments: unsupplemented control (CON), 0.48 g l-carnitine·piglet-1 ·day-1 (CAR) or 1.20 g l-arginine·kg body weight-1 ·day-1 (ARG). Milk replacer was prepared daily in a 1:4 powder-to-water ratio and fed ad libitum. Piglets were weighed at birth and on days 7, 14, 21 and 28. Feed intake was assessed daily. Piglets were euthanized on day 28. The entire semitendinosus muscle (STM) was collected, and organs were weighed. Subsequently, the STM was divided into the light (STMl ) and dark (STMd ) portion, and contractile and metabolic traits were analysed by ATP histochemistry, enzyme activities and gene expression. No differences in growth performance, organ and STM weight and on contractile traits were found between groups. A tendency (p < .10) for an elevated lipid oxidation enzyme activity in the STMl and STMd and greater (p < .05) phosphorylation of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway in the STMl of CAR compared with CON piglets was found. Despite these metabolic responses, the lack of effect of CAR and ARG supplementation on growth performance suggests that providing the milk replacer ad libitum in combination with added CAR and ARG is insufficient for eliciting faster growth of LW piglets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It is known that transition, as a shift of care, marks a vulnerable phase in the adolescents' lives with an increased risk for non-adherence and allograft failure. Still, the transition process of adolescents and young adults living with a kidney transplant in Germany is not well defined. The present research aims to assess transition-relevant structures for this group of young people. Special attention is paid to the timing of the process. SETTING In an observational study, we visited 21 departments of paediatric nephrology in Germany. Participants were doctors (n=19), nurses (n=14) and psychosocial staff (n=16) who were responsible for transition in the relevant centres. Structural elements were surveyed using a short questionnaire. The experiential viewpoint was collected by interviews which were transcribedverbatim before thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS This study highlights that professionals working within paediatric nephrology in Germany are well aware of the importance of successful transition. Key elements of transitional care are well understood and mutually agreed on. Nonetheless, implementation within daily routine seems challenging, and the absence of written, structured procedures may hamper successful transition. CONCLUSIONS While professionals aim for an individual timing of transfer based on medical, social, emotional and structural aspects, rigid regulations on transfer age as given by the relevant health authorities add on to the challenge. Abstract
BACKGROUND Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC)-associated hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is a major cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), especially in children. Its long-term outcome with respect to endothelial damage remains largely elusive. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study in 26 children who had suffered from STEC-HUS in the past and achieved a complete recovery of renal function (eGFR >90 ml/min/1.73 m2). Skin microcirculation after local heating was assessed by laser Doppler fluximetry, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), 24-h ambulatory blood pressure, and angiopoietin (Ang) 1 and 2 serum levels after a median follow-up period of 6.1 years. The results were compared to those of healthy controls. RESULTS All patients were normotensive, mean eGFR was 102 (range 91-154) ml/min/1.73 m2, and 13 of the 26 patients showed albuminuria. Endothelial dysfunction was present in 13 patients, and the mean serum Ang2/Ang1 ratio was increased compared to healthy children (each p < 0.05). In contrast, mean values for PWV and cIMT in the patients did not differ from those of the controls. Endothelial dysfunction was significantly associated with younger age at STEC-HUS manifestation, time after HUS, and presence of albuminuria. CONCLUSION The results of this study highlight the need for long-term follow-up of STEC-HUS patients even after complete recovery of eGFR and lack of hypertension with respect to microvascular damage.

Abstract
Regardless of recipient age at kidney transplantation (KTx), patients are at greatest risk for graft loss in adolescence, partly due to nonadherence to an oral immunosuppressive regimen. Belatacept, a non-nephrotoxic, first-in-class immunosuppressant that inhibits costimulation of T cells requires intravenous application only every 4 weeks, potentially leading to better adherence. However, it is only approved for use in adults. We report here the findings of the first study of belatacept in adolescents, comprising all patients in our department switched to belatacept post-KTx. Six patients (median age 15.5 years) were switched after a median of 7.5 months (range 23 days to 12 years), treatment range 3-28 months (cumulative 83 months): Three patients switched early (<3 months after KTx) had increased estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR); one patient switched 12 years post-KTx has stable GFR; two patients were switched following rapid decline of and with markedly impaired GFR, changing slope in one patient. One patient had one acute rejection. In addition of two patients who received belatacept for other conditions, the only relevant adverse event was neutropenia (after a cumulative 109 months). Belatacept as primary immunosuppression is an option in Epstein-Barr virus-seropositive nonadherent adolescents if administered sufficiently early before deterioration of graft function.
