Abstract
CuIn(x)Ga1-xSe2 (CIGS) thin films were prepared by a solution-based CuInGa (CIG) precursor- selenization process. First, we investigated the effect of selenization temperature on the formation of polycrystalline CIGS and grain growth. The CIG precursor films were selenized using a two-step process to investigate the reaction of Se and CIG precursors during the formation of CIGS thin films. Depending on the temperature in the 1st step of the selenization process, the CIG precursor forms a different intermediate phase between the single phase to ternary phase such as Cu, Se, CuSe, InSe, and CuInSe2. In addition, the intermediate phase exerts a significant influence on the final phase obtained after the 2nd step of the selenization process, particularly with regard to characteristics such as polycrystalline structure and grain growth in the CIGS films. The photoelectron conversion efficiency of devices prepared using CIGS thin films was approximately 1.59-2.75%.

Abstract
A common ancestral haplotype is strongly suggested in the Korean and Japanese patients with Fanconi anemia (FA), because common mutations have been frequently found: c.2546delC and c.3720_3724delAAACA of FANCA; c.307+1G>C, c.1066C>T, and c.1589_1591delATA of FANCG. Our aim in this study was to investigate the origin of these common mutations of FANCA and FANCG. We genotyped 13 FA patients consisting of five FA-A patients and eight FA-G patients from the Korean FA population. Microsatellite markers used for haplotype analysis included four CA repeat markers which are closely linked with FANCA and eight CA repeat markers which are contiguous with FANCG. As a result, Korean FA-A patients carrying c.2546delC or c.3720_3724delAAACA did not share the same haplotypes. However, three unique haplotypes carrying c.307+1G>C, c.1066C > T, or c.1589_1591delATA, that consisted of eight polymorphic loci covering a flanking region were strongly associated with Korean FA-G, consistent with founder haplotypes reported previously in the Japanese FA-G population. Our finding confirmed the common ancestral haplotypes on the origins of the East Asian FA-G patients, which will improve our understanding of the molecular population genetics of FA-G. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the association between disease-linked mutations and common ancestral haplotypes in the Korean FA population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to determine (1) whether change in the tibial plateau inclination (TPI) after high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is different from change in the knee joint line orientation (KJLO) relative to the ground; (2) whether, in varus knee OA patients before and after HTO, these radiographic measures are different from those in normal control; and (3) whether the postoperative values of the TPI and KJLO relative to the ground are associated with short term clinical outcome scores after HTO. DESIGN Fifty patients who underwent HTO and 75 normal controls were assessed with four radiographic measures. We compared the measures before HTO with those after HTO and with those of the normal controls, then examined associations between the postoperative radiographic measures and clinical outcome scores 1-year after HTO. RESULTS After HTO, TPI increased 9.0°, whereas KJLO relative to the ground only increased 4.1°, with a compensatory change of the ankle joint line orientation. However, the postoperative KJLO relative to the ground in the HTO group was significantly different from that of the normal controls (mean difference, 4.9°; P < 0.001). In the multiple regression analyses, the postoperative radiographic measures were not associated with outcome clinical scores 1 year after HTO. CONCLUSION After HTO the relative KJLO changed significantly less than did the anatomical geometry of the proximal tibia. Although the KJLO after the HTO was still significantly different from that of normal knees, its value did not adversely affect clinical outcome scores 1 year after HTO.

Abstract
Doxazosin, a commonly prescribed treatment for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, serves as an α1-blocker of the adrenergic receptors. In this study, we calculated its effect on the ovarian carcinoma cells. Doxazosin induces dose-dependent growth suppression and is additively activated through IFN-α or IFN-γ stimulation. They both enhanced G1 phase arrest, as well as the activity of caspase-3, and the reduction of cyclin D1 and CDK4 protein levels. Doxazosin growth suppression was abolished either by the Janus family of tyrosine kinase (JAK) or the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) inhibitor treatment. The activity of JAK/STAT was dependent on the level of doxazosin, suggesting a requirement of doxazosin for the activation of JAK/STAT. Furthermore, doxazosin plus IFN-α or doxazosin plus IFN-γ additively suppressed the activation of the JAK/STAT signals through phosphorylation of JAK and STAT, thus affecting the activation of subsequent downstream signaling components PI3K, mTOR, 70S6K, and PKCδ. In vivo study demonstrated that doxazosin significantly suppressed tumor growth in an ovarian cancer cell xenograft mouse model, inducing apoptotic cell death by up-regulating the expression of p53, whereas c-Myc expression was markedly reduced. Our data indicate that doxazosin can modulate the apoptotic effects of IFN-α- and IFN-γ through the JAK/STAT signaling pathways. Collectively, we indicate that this action may be a potent chemotherapeutic property against ovarian carcinoma.

Abstract
A high-quality Sb₂S₃ thin-absorber with controllable thickness was reproducibly formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. Compared with conventional chemical bath deposition (CBD), the Sb₂S₃ absorber deposited by ALD did not contain oxide or oxygen impurities and showed a very uniform thickness of Sb₂S₃ absorbers formed on a rough surface of dense blocking TiO₂/F-doped SnOv (bl-TiO₂/FTO) substrate. The planar ALD-Sb₂S₃ solar cells comprised of Au/Poly-3-hexylthiophene/ALD-Sb₂S₃/bl-TiO₂/FTO showed significantly improved power conversion efficiency of 5.77% at 1 sun condition and narrow efficiency deviation, whereas the planar CBD-Sb₂S₃ solar cells exhibited 2.17% power conversion efficiency. The high efficiency and good reproducibility of ALD-Sb₂S₃ solar cell devices is attributed to reduced backward recombination because of the inhibition of oxide defects within ALD-Sb₂S₃ absorber and the conformal deposition of very uniform Sb₂S₃ absorbers on the blocking TiO₂ surface by ALD process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-mediated real-time polymerase chain reaction clamping was recently developed to improve mutation detection sensitivity. Pleural effusion could be a good sample candidate for mutation analysis. To establish if PNA clamping could be used to detect KRAS mutation in particular in pleural effusion, we analysed its diagnostic performance. METHODS We studied 57 patients with malignant effusion. KRAS mutation was evaluated in samples of matched tumour tissue, cell block, pleural effusion and serum using PNA clamping and direct sequencing. RESULTS The detection rate of KRAS mutation using pleural effusion was 14% for PNA clamping and 10.5% for direct sequencing. The κ coefficient between the two methods was 0.76 (P value < 0.0001), 1.00 (P value < 0.0001) and 0.87 (P value < 0.0001) in pleural effusion, tissue and cell block, respectively. The diagnostic performance of KRAS mutation detection from pleural effusion compared with the results obtained for all samples combined showed that the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were as follows: 89, 100, 100 and 98%, respectively for PNA clamping; 67, 100, 100 and 94%, respectively for directing sequencing. CONCLUSIONS The current study suggests that PNA clamping had a good concordance with direct sequencing for the detection of KRAS mutation in patients with malignant effusion. Furthermore, the good diagnostic performance obtained from pleural effusion samples provides evidence that pleural effusion can be a useful source for detecting KRAS mutation in a clinical setting, in which the collection of tumour tissues is challenging.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and histological changes induced by dietary omega-3 fatty acid and γ-linoleic acid in acne vulgaris. A 10-week, randomised, controlled parallel dietary intervention study was performed in 45 participants with mild to moderate acne, which were allocated to either an omega-3 fatty acid group (2,000 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), a γ-linoleic acid group (borage oil containing 400 mg γ-linoleic acid), or a control group. After 10 weeks of omega-3 fatty acid or γ-linoleic acid supplementation, inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions decreased significantly. Patient subjective assessment of improvement showed a similar result. Heamatoxylin & eosin staining of acne lesions demonstrated reductions in inflammation and immunohistochemical staining intensity for interleukin-8. No severe adverse effect was reported. This study shows for the first time that omega-3 fatty acid and γ-linoleic acid could be used as adjuvant treatments for acne patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several in vitro studies have been conducted regarding the immunomodulatory and mycobactericidal roles of vitamin D in tuberculous infection. However, discrepancies exist among epidemiological studies. We compared vitamin D deficiency between patients with tuberculosis (TB) and healthy control subjects and identified risk factors for vitamin D deficiency. METHOD This was an age- and sex-matched case-control analysis of 94 TB cohort and 282 Korean national survey participants. RESULTS The median baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) level in the TB group (9.86 ng/ml, IQR 7.19-14.15) was lower than in controls (16.03 ng/ml, IQR 12.38-20.30, P < 0.001). The prevalence of severe vitamin D deficiency was higher in patients with TB (51.1%) than in controls (8.2%, P = 0.001). The median 25(OH)D level increased from 11.40 ng/ml (IQR 7.85-15.73) to 13.18 ng/ml (IQR 10.60-19.71) after treatment completion (P = 0.037). On multivariate analysis, presence of TB and history of TB were independently associated with severe vitamin D deficiency. CONCLUSION Patients with TB had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency than control subjects in a Korean population. The median 25(OH)D level increased after TB treatment. Further studies are needed to establish a causal relationship.

Abstract
Wnt inhibitory factor-1 (WIF1) is a conserved lipid-binding protein that interrupts Wnt ligands by interacting with their Frizzled receptors. Thus, they may suppress the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin triggered signaling cascade. Recently, we found that WIF1 can effectively co-regulate pro-apoptotic activity through the combination with Dickkopf-1 (DKK1). The tumor suppressor p53 protein expression was remarkably increased in the WIF1- and DKK1-transfected cells, along with p21. In contrast, expressions of the anti-apoptotic proteins, c-Myc and Bcl-2, were noticeably reduced. In addition, WIF1 and/or DKK1 significantly activated the transcription of p21 and p53, whereas c-Myc and Bcl-2 activities were remarkably reduced. The tumor suppressor WIF1 was also found to be capable of suppressing tumor growth through the inhibition of tumor angiogenesis in the cellular biological/physiological condition through the targeting of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway, while also being recognized as a Wnt antagonist factor in the Wnt cascade. Consistently, WIF1 conspicuously decreased the VEGF-induced phosphorylation of the PI3K/Akt signaling cascade components, including PDK1, mTOR, TSC-2, GSK-3β, and the p70S6K protein. Collectively, our results indicate for the first time that the tumor suppressor WIF1 is involved in angiogenesis and supplies a possible molecular target for the treatment of distinct malignant cancers, as well as several other associated diseases.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of dietary anticoccidial drugs plus antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) on parameters of immunity in commercial broiler chickens. Day-old chicks were raised on used litter from a farm with endemic gangrenous dermatitis to simulate natural pathogen exposure and provided with diets containing decoquinate (DECX) or monensin (COBN) as anticoccidials plus bacitracin methylene disalicylate and roxarsone as AGPs. As a negative control, the chickens were fed with a non-supplemented diet. Immune parameters examined were concanavalin A (ConA)-stimulated spleen cell proliferation, intestine intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) and spleen cell subpopulations, and cytokine/chemokine mRNA levels in IELs and spleen cells. ConA-induced proliferation was decreased at 14 d post-hatch in DECX-treated chickens, and increased at 25 and 43 d in COBN-treated animals, compared with untreated controls. In DECX-treated birds, increased percentages of MHC2(+) and CD4(+) IELS were detected at 14 d, but decreased percentages of these cells were seen at 43 d, compared with untreated controls, while increased TCR2(+) IELs were evident at the latter time. Dietary COBN was associated with decreased fractions of MHC2(+) and CD4(+) IELs and reduced percentages of MHC2(+), BU1(+), and TCR1(+) spleen cells compared with controls. The levels of transcripts for interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-6, IL-17F, IL-13, CXCLi2, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and transforming growth factorβ4 were elevated in IELs, and those for IL-13, IL-17D, CXCLi2, and IFN-γ were increased in spleen cells, of DECX- and/or COBN-treated chickens compared with untreated controls. By contrast, IL-2 and IL-12 mRNAs in IELs, and IL-4, IL-12, and IL-17F transcripts in spleen cells, were decreased in DECX- and/or COBN-treated chickens compared with controls. These results suggest that DECX or COBN, in combination with bacitracin and roxarsone, modulate the development of the chicken post-hatch immune system.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of immune-mediated lacrimal gland (LG) dysfunction in Sjögren's syndrome has been thoroughly studied. However, the majority of dry eye (DE) is not related to Sjögren type, and its pathophysiology remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine and investigate the protective mechanisms against DE stress in mice. DE induced prominent blood vessel loss without apoptosis or necrosis in the LG. Autophagic vacuoles, distressed mitochondria, and stressed endoplasmic reticulum were observed via electron microscopy. Immunoblotting confirmed the increase in autophagic markers. Glycolytic activities were enhanced with increasing levels of succinate and malate that, in turn, activated hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α. Interestingly, the areas of stable HIF-1α expression overlapped with COX-2 and MMP-9 upregulation in LGs of DE-induced mice. We generated HIF-1α conditional knockout (CKO) mice in which HIF-1α expression was lost in the LG. Surprisingly, normal LG polarities and morphologies were completely lost with DE induction, and tremendous acinar cell apoptosis was observed. Similar to Sjögren's syndrome, CD3+ and CD11b+ cells infiltrated HIF-1α CKO LGs. Our results show that DE induced the expression of HIF-1α that activated autophagy signals to prevent further acinar cell damage and to maintain normal LG function.

Abstract
Pertussis is a representative vaccine-preventable disease. However, there have been recent outbreaks in countries where even higher vaccination against the disease. One reason is the emergence of antigenic variants, which are different to vaccine type. In Korea, reported cases have rapidly increased since 2009. Therefore, we analyzed genotype of strains isolated in 2011-2012 by multilocus sequence typing method. As expected, the genotype profiles of tested genes dramatically changed. The major sequence type changed from ST1 to ST2, and new sequence type (ST8) appeared. In the minimum spanning tree, recent isolates belonging to the ACC-I-ST3 subgroup were detected that were composed of ST2, ST3, and ST6. In particular, the ST2 frequency increased to 81%. The novel ST8 was linked to the increased frequency of ST2. In addition, toxic strains carrying the ptxP3 promoter type were confirmed. This ptxP3 type emerged from 2009 and its frequency had increased to 100% in 2012. Based on these results, it can be inferred that the genotypic changes in the currently circulating strains are strongly associated with the recent increasing of pertussis in Korea. Therefore, the surveillance system should be strengthened, and genetic characterization of the isolates should be expanded to the whole genome sequence level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conventional biomarkers cannot always establish the cause of pleural effusions; thus, alternative tests permitting rapid and accurate diagnosis are required. The primary aim of this study is to assess the ability of pentraxin-3 (PTX3) in order to diagnose the cause of pleural effusion and compare its efficacy to that of other previously identified biomarkers. METHODS We studied 118 patients with pleural effusion, classified as transudates and exudates including malignant, tuberculous, and parapneumonic effusions (MPE, TPE, and PPE). The levels of PTX3, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and lactate in the pleural fluid were assessed. RESULTS The levels of pleural fluid PTX3 were significantly higher in patients with PPE than in those with MPE or TPE. PTX3 yielded the most favorable discriminating ability to predict PPE from MPE or TPE by providing the following: area under the curve, 0.74 (95% confidence interval, 0.63-0.84), sensitivity, 62.07%; and specificity, 81.08% with a cut-off point of 25.00 ng/mL. CONCLUSION Our data suggests that PTX3 may allow improved differentiation of PPE from MPE or TPE compared to the previously identified biomarkers CRP and PCT.

Abstract
Recently, thioridazine (10-[2-(1-methyl-2-piperidyl) ethyl]-2-methylthiophenothiazine), a well-known anti-psychotic agent was found to have anti-cancer activity in cancer cells. However, the molecular mechanism of the agent in cellular signal pathways has not been well defined. Thioridazine significantly increased early- and late-stage apoptotic fraction in cervical and endometrial cancer cells, suggesting that suppression of cell growth by thioridazine was due to the induction of apoptosis. Cell cycle analysis indicated thioridazine induced the down-regulation of cyclin D1, cyclin A and CDK4, and the induction of p21 and p27, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor. Additionally, we compared the influence of thioridazine with cisplatin used as a control, and similar patterns between the two drugs were observed in cervical and endometrial cancer cell lines. Furthermore, as expected, thioridazine successfully inhibited phosphorylation of Akt, phosphorylation of 4E-BP1 and phosphorylation of p70S6K, which is one of the best characterized targets of the mTOR complex cascade. These results suggest that thioridazine effectively suppresses tumor growth activity by targeting the PI3K/Akt/mTOR/p70S6K signaling pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Mechanical thrombectomy with a stent retriever applied shortly after symptom onset could increase good functional outcomes and improve survival in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion, but this has not yet been studied. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy with a Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke onset in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed 25 consecutive patients with acute basilar artery occlusion who were treated with mechanical thrombectomy by use of the Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke symptom onset. Successful recanalization was defined as TICI grade 2b or 3. Good outcome was defined as mRS score of 0-2 at 3 months. Clinical and radiologic data in patients with good outcomes were compared with those with poor outcomes. RESULTS Successful recanalization was achieved in 96% (24/25) of patients, and 48% (12/25) of patients had good outcomes. Eighty-eight percent (22/25) of patients survived to 3 months. The median NIHSS score on admission was significantly lower in patients with good outcomes than in those with poor outcomes (9.5 versus 14, P = .005). Procedure-related complications occurred in 2 patients (8%). No symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages occurred. CONCLUSIONS The current study suggests that mechanical thrombectomy by use of a Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke onset increases good outcomes and improves survival in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion.

Abstract
While the ability to develop nanomaterials and incorporate them into products is advancing rapidly worldwide, understanding of the potential health safety effects of nanomaterials has proceeded at a much slower pace. Since 2008, Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) started an investigation to prepare “Strategic Action Plan” to evaluate safety and nano risk management associated with foods, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics using nano-scale materials. Although there are some studies related to potential risk of nanomaterials, physical-chemical characterization of nanomaterials is not clear yet and these do not offer enough information due to their limitations. Their uncertainties make it impossible to determine whether nanomaterials are actually hazardous to human. According to the above mention, we have some problems to conduct the human exposure risk assessment currently. On the other hand, uncertainty about safety may lead to polarized public debate and to businesses unwillingness for further nanotechnology investigation. Therefore, the criteria and methods to assess possible adverse effects of nanomaterials have been vigorously taken into consideration by many international organizations: the World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic and Commercial Development and the European Commission. The object of this study was to develop risk assessment principles for safety management of future nanoproducts and also to identify areas of research to strengthen risk assessment for nanomaterials. The research roadmaps which were proposed in this study will be helpful to fill up the current gaps in knowledge relevant nano risk assessment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We report the bone attenuation of ankle joint measured on computed tomography (CT) and the cause of injury in patients with ankle fractures. The results showed age- and gender-dependent low bone attenuation and low-energy trauma in elderly females, which suggest the osteoporotic features of ankle fractures. INTRODUCTION This study was performed to investigate the osteoporotic features of ankle fracture in terms of bone attenuation and cause of injury. METHODS One hundred ninety-four patients (mean age 51.0 years, standard deviation 15.8 years; 98 males and 96 females) with ankle fracture were included. All patients underwent CT examination, and causes of injury (high/low-energy trauma) were recorded. Mean bone attenuations of the talus, medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and distal tibial metaphysis were measured on CT images. Patients were divided into younger age (<50 years) and older age (≥50 years) groups, and mean bone attenuation and causes of injury were compared between the two groups in each gender. RESULTS Proportion of low-energy trauma was higher in the older age group than in the younger age group, but the difference was only significant in female gender (p = 0.011). The older age group showed significantly lower bone attenuation in the talus, medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and distal tibial metaphysis than the younger age group in both genders. The older age group showed more complex pattern of fractures than the younger age group. With increasing age, bone attenuations tended to decrease and the difference of bone attenuation between the genders tended to increase in the talus, medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, and distal tibial metaphysis. CONCLUSIONS Ankle fracture had features of osteoporotic fracture that is characterized by age- and gender-dependent low bone attenuation. Ankle fracture should not be excluded from the clinical and research interest as well as from the benefit of osteoporosis management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of Shiga toxin (Stx) gene-positive stool samples from dairy farmer and slaughterhouse workers in Gyeonggi-Do province. METHODS A total of 621 samples from healthy farmers and 198 samples from slaughterhouse workers were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) infection on stool samples. RESULTS The PCR product of Stx-encoding genes was detected in 21 (3.4%) of 621 farmers and 15 (7.6%) of 198 slaughterhouse workers' stool samples. Distribution of the Stx PCR positive workers by age increment revealed an increase in STEC infection with age increment in both workers. Distribution of the Stx PCR positive workers by working years revealed an increase in STEC infection with working years in farmers. CONCLUSION These results of the study show that slaughterhouse workers are at higher risk of STEC infection than farmers. In addition, slaughterhouse workers have a more potential source of food contamination of STEC and transmission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health care-associated pneumonia (HCAP) affects a heterogeneous group of patients in frequent contact with health care systems. However, HCAP criteria poorly predict infection with drug-resistant (DR) pathogens. OBJECTIVE To validate our previously reported risk-scoring model (predictive of DR pathogen infection) in patients admitted to hospital with pneumonia. DESIGN We evaluated 580 patients admitted with culture-positive bacterial pneumonia. We identified risk factors, evaluated the risk-scoring model's capacity to predict infection by DR pathogens and compared the model's diagnostic accuracy with that of current HCAP criteria. RESULTS DR pathogens were observed in 227/580 patients (39.1%). Of 269 HCAP patients, 153 (56.9%) were infected with DR pathogens. Overtreatment was more common in HCAP than in community-acquired pneumonia (58.7% vs. 41.2%, P < 0.001). Recent hospitalisation, admission from a long-term care facility, recent antibiotic treatment and tube feeding were independently associated with DR pathogens. For pathogen prediction, the risk-scoring model showed better diagnostic accuracy than HCAP criteria (area under receiver operating-characteristic curve = 0.723 vs. 0.673, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION According to current HCAP criteria, half of the HCAP patients were treated unnecessarily with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Risk scoring by stratifying risk factors could improve the identification of patients likely to be infected with DR pathogens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The learning curve of robotic gastrectomy has not yet been evaluated in comparison with the laparoscopic approach. We compared the learning curves of robotic gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastrectomy based on operation time and surgical success. METHODS We analyzed 172 robotic and 481 laparoscopic distal gastrectomies performed by single surgeon from May 2003 to April 2009. The operation time was analyzed using a moving average and non-linear regression analysis. Surgical success was evaluated by a cumulative sum plot with a target failure rate of 10%. Surgical failure was defined as laparoscopic or open conversion, insufficient lymph node harvest for staging, resection margin involvement, postoperative morbidity, and mortality. RESULTS Moving average and non-linear regression analyses indicated stable state for operation time at 95 and 121 cases in robotic gastrectomy, and 270 and 262 cases in laparoscopic gastrectomy, respectively. The cumulative sum plot identified no cut-off point for surgical success in robotic gastrectomy and 80 cases in laparoscopic gastrectomy. Excluding the initial 148 laparoscopic gastrectomies that were performed before the first robotic gastrectomy, the two groups showed similar number of cases to reach steady state in operation time, and showed no cut-off point in analysis of surgical success. CONCLUSIONS The experience of laparoscopic surgery could affect the learning process of robotic gastrectomy. An experienced laparoscopic surgeon requires fewer cases of robotic gastrectomy to reach steady state. Moreover, the surgical outcomes of robotic gastrectomy were satisfactory.

Abstract
Abstract
Abnormal signals through the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) moieties are important in colon cancer both for tumorigenesis and drug targets. Wild type KIT, one of the RTKs, had been reported to be highly expressed in some colon cancers, however little is known about the functional aspects and roles of stem cell factor (SCF) dependent activation in colon cancers. We characterized colorectal cancers with KIT expression and analyzed the biological alterations of KIT after stimulation of SCF and its impact on the downstream signals. We identified wild type KIT is expressed in some colon cancer cell lines, activated by SCF, and subsequently activated AKT and ERK signaling pathways. We also demonstrated that KIT expression was gradually decreased after SCF stimulation due to lysosomal degradation of activated KIT. We found PKC activation rescues KIT by inhibiting ubiquitination of KIT after SCF treatment. Among the various types of PKCs, PKC-δ directly bound to wild type KIT and rescued SCF-KIT complexs. Additionally, we demonstrated that KIT and PKC-δ are concomitantly activated in the colon cancer tissues with wild type KIT expression, and the expression of KIT is correlated with poor survival. Based on these findings we concluded that downstream signal activation after SCF-KIT binding is continuously accomplished by the PKC-δ activation and subsequent KIT recycling. These signal pathways induced by SCF and PKC-δ mediated KIT recycling play important roles in colon cancer progression.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-mediated real-time PCR clamping was recently used to detect mutations because it has higher sensitivity than conventional direct sequencing. Pleural effusion and serum samples could be good sources of detecting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutational status of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods: We studied 37 NSCLC patients with malignant pleural effusion. In each patient, EGFR mutational status was measured from the samples of tumor tissue, cell block, pleural effusion and serum using both PNA clamping and direct sequencing. The concordance between PNA clamping and direct sequencing, and the diagnostic performance of pleural effusion was investigated. Results: The detection rate of EGFR mutation in the pleural effusion and the serum was 27% and 2.8%, respectively by both PNA clamping and direct sequencing. The κ coefficient between the two methods were 0.68 (p-value = 0.0007), 0.91 (p-value < 0.0001), 0.75 (p-value < 0.0001) and -0.01 (p-value = 0.8639) in tissue, cell block, pleural effusion and serum, respectively. The diagnostic performance of pleural effusion compared with combined tumor tissue plus cell block showed sensitivity 89%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100% and negative predictive value 95% with PNA clamping, and sensitivity 67%, specificity 90%, positive predictive value 75% and negative predictive value 86% with directing sequencing. Interestingly, a patient who was confirmed EGFR mutation only with the PNA clamping showed significant response to EGFR TKI (tyrosine kinase inhibitor). Conclusion: Despite the limited role of serum samples, pleural effusion had a diagnostic performance comparable with tumor tissue and cell block to detect EGFR mutational status in NSCLC. Although the diagnostic performance of PNA clamping was similar to that of direct sequencing, additional benefit is expected considering the response to the EGFR TKI.

Abstract
The development of clinically relevant biomarkers is important for diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and active tuberculosis (TB) and predicting their prognoses. This study examined whether the responses of multiple cytokines can be used as a biomarker to distinguish the TB infection status and mycobacterial load. We analysed the responses of multiple cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17 and TNF-α) in the supernatant from the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube assay following stimulation of whole blood from the TB group (n = 32), LTBI group (n = 19) and healthy controls (n = 30) with TB antigens (ESAT-6, CFP-10 and TB7.7). The median responses of IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-10 and IL-13 were higher in the LTBI and active TB groups than in the non-TB control group (IFN-γ, P < 0.001; IL-2, P < 0.001; IL-10, P = 0.012; IL-13, P < 0.001). The median IL-2/IFN-γ ratio of the LTBI group was higher than that of the active TB group (P = 0.014) and differed significantly between patients with LTBI, patients with smear-negative TB and patients with smear-positive TB (P = 0.027). This difference was especially evident between the patients with LTBI and patients with smear-positive TB (P = 0.047). In conclusion, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-10 and IL-13 can serve as biomarkers for distinguishing TB infection. In addition, the IL-2/IFN-γ ratio appears to be a biomarker for diagnosing LTBI and may be useful as a prognostic factor and for evaluating treatment responses.
