Abstract
Tailoring the surface of biomaterial scaffolds has been a key strategy to modulate the cellular interactions that are helpful for tissue healing process. In particular, nanotopological surfaces have been demonstrated to regulate diverse behaviors of stem cells, such as initial adhesion, spreading and lineage specification. Here, we tailor the surface of biopolymer nanofibers with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to create a unique bi-modal nanoscale topography (500 nm nanofiber with 25 nm nanotubes) and report the performance in modulating diverse in vivo responses including inflammation, angiogenesis, and bone regeneration. When administered to a rat subcutaneous site, the CNT-coated nanofiber exhibited significantly reduced inflammatory signs (down-regulated pro-inflammatory cytokines and macrophages gathering). Moreover, the CNT-coated nanofibers showed substantially promoted angiogenic responses, with enhanced neoblood vessel formation and angiogenic marker expression. Such stimulated tissue healing events by the CNT interfacing were evidenced in a calvarium bone defect model. The in vivo bone regeneration of the CNT- coated nanofibers was significantly accelerated, with higher bone mineral density and up-regulated osteogenic signs (OPN, OCN, BMP2) of in vivo bone forming cells. The in vitro studies using MSCs could demonstrate accelerated adhesion and osteogenic differentiation and mineralization, supporting the osteo-promoting mechanism behind the in vivo bone forming event. These findings highlight that the CNTs interfacing of biopolymer nanofibers is highly effective in reducing inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, and driving adhesion and osteogenesis of MSCs, which eventually orchestrate to accelerate tissue healing and bone regeneration process. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Here we demonstrate that the interfacing of biopolymer nanofibers with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could modulate multiple interactions of cells and tissues that are ultimately helpful for the tissue healing and bone regeneration process. The CNT-coated scaffolds significantly reduced the pro-inflammatory signals while stimulating the angiogenic marker expressions. Furthermore, the CNT-coated scaffolds increased the bone matrix production of bone forming cells in vivo as well as accelerated the adhesion and osteogenic differentiation of MSCs in vitro. These collective findings highlight that the CNTs coated on the biopolymer nanofibers allow the creation of a promising platform for nanoscale engineering of biomaterial surface that can favor tissue healing and bone regeneration process, through a series of orchestrated events in anti-inflammation, pro-angiogenesis, and stem cell stimulation.

Abstract
Sexual dimorphism is one of the major factors responsible for apparent variations in human skeletal anatomy. Establishing the biological profile of the deceased is essential for personal identification in forensic and archaeological casework. To develop a reliable biological profile, sex allocation is an integral step required to determine age, race/ancestry and stature, given observable differences in aging and growth patterns and variations in morphological traits relating to ancestry. Sex estimation from long bones by visual examination is very difficult. However, metric observations are more objective and effective. This osteometric analysis focused on sex estimation from the femur using discriminant function analysis. Fourteen measurements were taken directly on 175 dry femora (117 males and 58 females), aged 20–60 years, from the Chhattisgarh region of Central India. Student’s t-test was applied to assess significant sex and size differences. Direct and stepwise discriminant function analyses were applied to derive discriminant function models for sex estimation. The three parameters that were selected for the discriminant function analysis included: transverse head diameter, bi-trochanteric distance and maximum shaft diameter. Males were more accurately classified than females. An overall accuracy of 80.6% was reported with direct discriminant function analysis and 76% with stepwise discriminant function analysis upon cross-validation. The transverse head diameter emerged to be the best predictor of sex. This study provides a database and standards for sex estimation from skeletal remains of an unknown nature based on discriminant function equations. This is one of the few studies conducted in India on dry bones, and we anticipate that it will guide forensic specialists in the identification of unknown skeletons from this region.

Abstract
In critical limb ischemia (CLI), overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impairment of neovascularization contribute to muscle damage and limb loss. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNP, or 'nanoceria') possess oxygen-modulating properties which have shown therapeutic utility in various disease models. Here we show that CNP exhibit pro-angiogenic activity in a mouse hindlimb ischemia model, and investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the pro-angiogenic effect. CNP were injected into a ligated region of a femoral artery, and tissue reperfusion and hindlimb salvage were monitored for 3 weeks. Tissue analysis revealed stimulation of pro-angiogenic markers, maturation of blood vessels, and remodeling of muscle tissue following CNP administration. At a dose of 0.6 mg CNP, mice showed reperfusion of blood vessels in the hindlimb and a high rate of limb salvage (71%, n = 7), while all untreated mice (n = 7) suffered foot necrosis or limb loss. In vitro, CNP promoted endothelial cell tubule formation via the Ref-1/APE1 signaling pathway, and the involvement of this pathway in the CNP response was confirmed in vivo using immunocompetent and immunodeficient mice and by siRNA knockdown of APE1. These results demonstrate that CNP provide an effective treatment of CLI with excessive ROS by scavenging ROS to improve endothelial survival and by inducing Ref-1/APE1-dependent angiogenesis to revascularize an ischemic limb.

Abstract
Single molecule tracking experiments inside a hydrated polymer network have shown that the tracer motion is subdiffusive due to the viscoelastic environment inside the gel-like network. This property can be related to the negative autocorrelation of the instantaneous displacements at short times. Although the displacements of the individual tracers exhibit Gaussian statistics, the displacement distribution of all the trajectories combined from different spatial locations of the polymer network exhibits a non-Gaussian distribution. Here, we analyze many individual tracer trajectories to show that the central portion of the non-Gaussian distribution can be well approximated by an exponential distribution that spreads sublinearly with time. We explain all these features seen in the experiment by a generalized Langevin model for an overdamped particle with algebraically decaying correlations. We show that the degree of non-Gaussianity can change with the extent of heterogeneity, which is controlled in our model by the experimentally observed distributions of the motion parameters.

Abstract
The genetic basis of differential host immune response vis-à-vis transcriptome profile was explored in PBMCs of indigenous (Ghurrah) and crossbred pigs after classical swine fever vaccination and in monocyte derived macrophages (MDMs) challenged with virulent classical swine fever (CSF) virus. The humoral immune response (E2 antibody) was higher (74.87%) in crossbred than indigenous pigs (58.20%) at 21st days post vaccination (21dpv). The rate of reduction of ratio of CD4+/CD8+ was higher in crossbred pigs than indigenous pigs at 7th days post vaccination (7dpv). The immune genes IFIT1, IFIT5, RELA, NFKB2, TNF and LAT2 were up regulated at 7dpv in RNA seq data set and was in concordance during qRT-PCR validation. The Laminin Subunit Beta 1 (LAMB1) was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) down-regulated in MDMs of indigenous pigs and consequently a significantly (p ≤ 0.01) higher copy number of virulent CSF virus was evidenced in macrophages of crossbred pigs than indigenous pigs. Activation of LXR:RXR pathway at 60 h post infection (60hpi) in MDMs of indigenous versus crossbred pigs inhibited nuclear translocation of NF-κB, resulted into transrepression of proinflammatory genes. But it helped in maintenance of HDL level by lowering down cholesterol/LDL level in MDMs of indigenous pigs. The key immune genes (TLR2, TLR4, IL10, IL8, CD86, CD54, CASP1) of TREM1 signaling pathway were upregulated at 7dpv in PBMCs but those genes were downregulated at 60hpi in MDMs indigenous pigs. Using qRT-PCR, the validation of differentially expressed, immunologically important genes (LAMB1, OAS1, TLR 4, TLR8 and CD86) in MDMs revealed that expression of these genes were in concordance with RNA-seq data.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The development of an enzymatic assay for the specific quantification of the C1-oxidation product, i.e. gluconic acid of cellulose active lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs). RESULTS In combination with a β-glucosidase, the spectrophotometrical assay can reliably quantify the specific C1- oxidation product of LPMOs acting on cellulose. It is applicable for a pure cellulose model substrate as well as lignocellulosic biomass. The enzymatic assay compares well with the quantification performed by HPAEC-PAD. In addition, we show that simple boiling is not sufficient to inactivate LPMOs and we suggest to apply a metal chelator in addition to boiling or to drastically increase pH for proper inactivation. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the versatility of this simple enzymatic assay makes it useful in a wide range of experiments in basic and applied LPMO research and without the need for expensive instrumentation, e.g. HPAEC-PAD.

Abstract
Porcine teschovirus (PTV) previously classified as porcine enteroviruses in the family Picornaviridae are associated with a wide range of illnesses in swine ranging from asymptomatic infection to acute fatal encephalomyelitis, diarrhea, and pneumonia. This study was planned to investigate whether porcine teschovirus is prevalent among pigs in India and to characterize the PTV identified in the study population. The study conducted in certain farms of North India revealed that 13 of 190 (6.84%) fecal samples were PTV positive by RT-PCR. Three viruses were successfully isolated from fecal samples using IB-RS-2 cell lines which were confirmed by RT-PCR and sequencing. Molecular characterization based on the VP1 region of the viral genome identified the isolated viruses as serotype 5 and serotype 8 of PTV. A new variant of teschovirus was also identified which showed significant nucleotide diversity from the known serotypes of the teschoviruses. This is the first report of isolation, identification, and characterization of porcine teschoviruses in India.

Abstract
Half of the global human population is dependent on rice as a staple food crop and more than 25% increase in rice productivity is required to feed the global population by 2030. With increase in irrigation, global warming and rising sea level, rising salinity has become one of the major challenges to enhance the rice productivity. Since the loss on this account is to the tune of US$12 billion per annum, it necessitates the global attention. In the era of technological advancement, substantial progress has been made on phenomics and genomics data generation but reaping benefit of this in rice salinity variety development in terms of cost, time and precision requires their harmonization. There is hardly any comprehensive holistic review for such combined approach. Present review describes classical salinity phenotyping approaches having morphological, physiological and biochemical components. It also gives a detailed account of invasive and non-invasive approaches of phenomic data generation and utilization. Classical work of rice salinity QLTs mapping in the form of chromosomal atlas has been updated. This review describes how QTLs can be further dissected into QTN by GWAS and transcriptomic approaches. Opportunities and progress made by transgenic, genome editing, metagenomics approaches in combating rice salinity problems are discussed. Major aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive over-view of hitherto progress made in rice salinity tolerance research which is required to understand bridging of phenotype based breeding with molecular breeding. This review is expected to assist rice breeders in their endeavours by fetching greater harmonization of technological advances in phenomics and genomics for better pragmatic approach having practical perspective.

Abstract
The cost of SNP genotyping to screen different breeds and to estimate the exact proportion of ancestry level is quite high, which can be compensated through deriving a small panel of ancestry informative markers (AIMs). Hence, we carried out the present study to provide an insight into ancestry level inferred from a panel of informative markers in the crossbred Vrindavani population developed at ICAR-IVRI, India. We have performed a new method i.e., discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) for the first time on the dataset of Vrindavani cattle. To confirm our method, we had performed DAPC on two other well-known crossbred cattle, i.e., Frieswal and Beefmaster. Three sets of panels (500, 1000 and 2000 markers) were tested for clustering of individuals. Among all the panels, we found the panel (1000 markers) with DAPC based contribution method was of the smallest size and comparatively of the highest accuracy.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the population structure and admixture levels in the Vrindavani composite population in India by using Bovine50KSNP BeadChip data. Genotypic data were generated for randomly selected animals (n = 72) of Vrindavani population and the data for parental breeds i.e., Hariana (n = 10), Holstein-Friesian (n = 63), Jersey (n = 28) and Brown Swiss (n = 22) were retrieved from a public repository. The indices of population structure were calculated using PLINK software and R-program. The merged dataset was analysed for assessing admixture levels and population stratification using three different approaches i.e., principal component analysis (PCA), multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) approach and the model-based approach in STRUCTURE software. The average minor allele frequency (MAF) value for Vrindavani population was estimated to be 0.235. Vrindavani population was found to possess an average ancestry of 39.5, 22.9, 26.9, and 10.7% inheritance levels from Holstein Friesian, Jersey, Hariana and Brown Swiss cattle breeds, respectively.

Abstract
Background & objectives Climate change is an emerging issue particularly in the context of vector-borne diseases. A study was undertaken in Nainital and Almora districts of Uttarakhand to provide evidences of changing climatic conditions, abundance of vectors, and knocking of malaria in hilly areas. Material and methods Longitudinal data on temperature and relative humidity were procured from Tussar Silk Centre, Bhimtal, India as well as generated using HOBO device. Monthly density of malaria vectors, their positivity for sporozoite proteins of malaria parasite and fever surveys were conducted as per the standard procedures from 2010 to 2013. Epidemiological data were procured from the State Programme Officer of Uttarakhand state. Results It was found that the temperature has increased since 1990 resulting in extension in windows of malaria transmission, temporal distribution as well as man hour density of Anopheles culicifacies and An. fluviatilis in hilly districts of Uttarakhand state. Both the vectors were found in high density up to a maximum man hour density of 110 (An. culicifacies) and 69 (An. fluviatilis) as compared to 32 and 33, respectively during 1998. The field collected vector species were also found positive for sporozoite proteins of malaria parasites in the month of October and November. Evidence of occurrence of malaria cases was also found in areas hitherto free from malaria. Interpretation & conclusion The findings reveal that Himalayan region needs attention to strengthen surveillance for malaria to identify emerging new foci of malaria transmission in view of climate change. Health education to communities about preventive measures to contain breeding of vectors and seeking timely treatment should be imparted so as to achieve the goal of malaria elimination in category-1 in the first instance.

Abstract
Background: The increasing burden of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) carriage and infection in different patient settings in India has created an acute need for guidance for clinicians regarding optimal strategies for the management of CRE infection in critically ill patients. Research design and methods: A multidisciplinary panel of 11 Indian experts in CRE infection assembled for comprehensive discussion and consensus development. The experts developed clinical statements through a systematic review of key literature. Main outcome measures: The panel voted anonymously on 60 clinically relevant questions, through a modified Delphi process. Results: Forty-six key clinical consensus statements (CCS) were proposed. The panel reached a consensus on several important issues, providing recommendations on surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, pharmacokinetic challenges, combination therapy, and cornerstone molecules in CRE infections. The panel also proposed a treatment algorithm for NDM-prevalent settings. Conclusion: These consensus statements may offer clinicians expert guidance on the management of CRE infections. There is a dearth of high-/moderate-level evidence on managing CRE infections; the recommendations presented herein are based on expert opinion.

Abstract
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have now replaced microsatellite markers in several species for various genetic investigations like parentage assignment, genetic breed composition, assessment for individuality and, most popularly, as a useful tool in genomic selection. However, such a resource, which can offer to assist breed identification in a cost-effective manner is still not explored in cattle breeding programs. In our study, we have tried to describe methods for reducing the number of SNPs to develop a breed-specific panel. We have used SNP data from Dryad open public access repository. Starting from a global dataset of 178 animals belonging to 10 different breeds, we selected five panels each comprising of similar number of SNPs using different methods i.e., Delta, Pairwise Wright's FST, informativeness for assignment, frequent item feature selection (FIFS) and minor allele frequency-linkage disequilibrium (MAF-LD) based method. MAF-LD based method has been recently developed by us for construction of breed-specific SNP panels. The STRUCTURE software analysis of MAF-LD based method showed appropriate clustering in comparison to other panels. Later, the panel of 591 breed-specific SNPs was called to their respective breeds using Venny 2.1.0 and UGent web tools software. Breed-specific SNPs were later annotated by using various Bioinformatics softwares.

Abstract
Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) causes severe neurological disease in humans, especially among children. The disease is endemic in several South Asian countries including India. Swine play a major role as amplifier host for JEV and act as a source of infection to humans through mosquito bite. Early detection of either virus or antibodies in swine will aid to undertake control measures to prevent virus spread to humans. Swine seldom show symptoms of JEV infection and the viraemic phase lasts for a short period of 3 to 4 days indicating the potential of detection of antibodies, which remain for relatively longer period, as a suitable alternative. Cost effective and sensitive assays for the detection of JEV antibodies in swine are not available indigenously. Hence, we have developed a recombinant nonstructural protein 1 (rNS1) based enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of IgG antibodies against JEV in swine. The test is robust, highly sensitive (91%), specific (97%), reproducible and affordable. Field validation of the assay was done by screening 3628 swine Serum samples collected from different parts of India. The overall sero-positivity was found to be 32.22%. The developed ELISA can be readily incorporated into surveillance programs for detection of Japanese encephalitis virus activity in swine population thereby aiding in prediction of outbreaks in humans.

Abstract
Peste-des-petits ruminants is a transboundary viral disease of small ruminants caused by small ruminant morbillivirus (SRMV). In the present study, the full-length V gene of SRMV was constructed through site-directed mutagenesis from the P gene transcripts of the vaccine virus (Sungri/96 India) and expressed in a prokaryotic expression system. In animals, the seroconversion against this protein occurs from 14-days and is getting produced from 48 h in cell culture. An indirect ELISA developed using this protein has a relative sensitivity and relative specificity of 77.73% and 73.775%, respectively as compared to c-ELISA. In this ELISA, it was observed that most of the convalescent animals elicited higher level of antibodies than vaccinated animals.

Abstract
In human beings, sexual dimorphism can be well distinguished in almost every bone of the skeleton. Establishing a reliable biological profile is the foremost step in identifying human skeletal remains. Sex determination along with the estimation of age, stature and ancestry comprise the important parameters in establishing a biological profile. The pelvis and skull are considered the most reliable bones in sexing human remains. In the absence of the pelvis and skull, forensic scientists must rely upon other parts of the skeleton for sex assessment. Determination of sex from long bones based on morphological traits can be a challenging task, as there are a few morphological differences between the sexes for long bones. However, metric variations can prove to be helpful, as they are reproducible and more reliable. Metric analysis also has the added benefit of being less biased than nonmetric analysis. This study aimed to establish sex determination standards from tibiae using discriminant function analysis. A total of 17 measurements were taken on 162 dry tibiae (116 males and 46 females) of known sex and in the age range 20–60 years. Discriminant function analysis was performed to derive models for sexing of the tibiae. The breadth of the medial articular surface was observed to be the best parameter for sex prediction from metric measurements of the tibia. In stepwise analysis, only seven parameters – namely, the breadth of the medial articular surface, the condylo-malleolar length, the circumference at the nutrient foramen, the breadth of the lateral articular surface, the maximum length, the transverse diameter in the middle of the bone and the transverse diameter at the level of the nutrient foramen – were entered into the discriminant functions. Overall, the accuracy of sexing was observed to be 93.8% and 95% with the direct method and the stepwise method, respectively. This study provides a database and standards for sex estimation from tibiae based on discriminant function models. This investigation further concludes that tibiae can be used for sex determination in forensic examinations.

Abstract
Ovarian cancers are known to evade immunosurveillance and to orchestrate a suppressive immune microenvironment. Here we examine the role of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), an ovarian cancer biomarker, in immune evasion. Through modified subtractive hybridization analyses we have characterized the gene targets of HE4 in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and established a preliminary mechanism for HE4-mediated immune failure in ovarian tumours. Upon exposure of purified PMBCs to HE4, osteopontin (OPN) and dual-specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) emerged as the most suppressed and up-regulated genes, respectively. SKOV3 and OVCAR8, human ovarian carcinoma cell lines, exhibited enhanced proliferation in conditioned media from HE4-exposed PBMCs, an effect that was attenuated by the addition of recombinant OPN or OPN-inducible cytokines [interleukin (IL)-12 and interferon (IFN)-Ɣ]. Additionally, upon co-culture with PBMCs, HE4-silenced SKOV3 cells were found to be more susceptible to cytotoxic cell death. The relationship between HE4 and OPN was reinforced further through the analysis of serous ovarian cancer patient samples. In these biopsy specimens, the number of OPN+ T cells correlated positively with progression free survival (PFS) and inversely with serum HE4 level. Taken together, these findings show that HE4 enhances ovarian cancer tumorigenesis by compromising OPN-mediated T cell activation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related inflammation is recognized as a driver for tumor progression and chemokines are important players in both inflammation and the progression of many cancer types. CXC chemokines, especially CXCL8, have been implicated in melanoma growth and metastasis, while less is known for their roles in drug resistance. METHODS We generated drug-resistant cells by continuous exposure to chemotherapeutic drugs and analyzed the mechanism(s) of therapy resistance in malignant melanoma. RESULTS We report chemotherapies induced upregulation of a variety of chemokines in the CXCR1/CXCR2 network by an NF-κB-dependent mechanism. Notably, analysis of the drug-resistant melanoma cell line selected after prolonged exposure to chemotherapeutic drug dacarbazine revealed higher levels of CXCL8 and CXCR2 compared with parent cells as a signature of drug resistance. CXCR2 neutralization markedly improved sensitivity to dacarbazine in melanoma cells. CONCLUSION These data provide insights into what drives melanoma cells to survive after chemotherapy treatment, thus pointing to strategies for developing combined drug therapies for combating the problem of chemotherapy resistance in melanoma.

Abstract
Continuous generation of plastic waste has prompted substantial research efforts in its utilization as a feedstock for energy generation. Pyrolysis has emerged as one of the best waste management technique for energy extraction from the plastic waste. The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of operating temperature on the liquid product yields in the pyrolysis process by non-isothermal heating. Non-catalytic thermal pyrolysis of waste polyethylene (PE) [high density polyethylene (HDPE)], waste polypropene (PP), waste polystyrene (PS), waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and mixed plastic waste (MPW) was carried out in a non-sweeping atmosphere in a semi-batch reactor at four different temperatures 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C. The minimum degradation temperature of the mixed and individual plastics was obtained using a thermogravimetric apparatus (TGA) at a heating rate of 20 °C/min. The TGA results show that all plastics degrade in a single step and the degradation temperatures of PS > PET > PP > HDPE, while mixed plastic degradation indicates two distinct degradation steps. Further, a waste polymer shows a lower degradation temperature than the virgin polymer. The degradation of HDPE is found to produce the maximum oil yield with minimum solid residue. The degradation of PET results in the highest amount of solid and benzoic acid as crystals and gas with no oil. Degradation of mixed plastic causes oil yield in the intermediate range of pyrolysis of individual plastic wastes. Overall, 500 °C is observed to be an optimum temperature for the recovery of low-density pyrolytic oil with the highest liquid yield. The degradation of PE and PP is found to be caused by random chain scission followed by inter and intramolecular hydrogen transfer. The degradation of PS occurs by side elimination or end chain scission followed by β-scission mechanism. The degradation of mix plastics results from random chain scission followed by β-scission mechanism. The effect of temperature on oil and gas recovery as well as recovery time was also assessed.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs (DE miRNAs) in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of crossbred pigs in response to CSF vaccination on 7 and 21 days of post vaccination as compared to unvaccinated control (0 dpv). Simultaneously, set of miRNA was predicted using mRNA seq data at same time point. The proportion of CD4-CD8+ and CD4+CD8+ increased after vaccination, and the mean percentage inhibition was 86.89% at 21 dpv. It was observed that 22 miRNAs were commonly expressed on both the time points. Out of predicted DE miRNAs, it was found that 40 and 35 DE miRNAs were common, obtained from miRNA seq analysis and predicted using mRNA seq data on 7 dpv versus 0 dpv and 21 dpv versus 0 dpv respectively. Two DE miRNAs, ssc-miR-22-5p and ssc-miR-27b-5p, were selected based on their log2 fold change and functions of their target genes in immune process/pathway of viral infections. The validations of DE miRNAs using qRT-PCR were in concordance with miRNA seq analysis. Two set of target genes, CD40 and SWAP70 (target gene of ssc-miR-22-5p) and TLR4 and Lyn (target gene of ssc-miR-27b-5p), were validated and were in concordance with results of RNA seq analysis at a particular time point (except TLR4). The first report of genome-wide identification of differentially expressed miRNA in response to live attenuated vaccine virus of classical swine fever revealed miR-22-5p and miR-27b-5p were differentially expressed at 7 dpv and 21 dpv.

Abstract
Introduction Awareness about dental implants is increasing among dental patients, which demands a higher level of competence for dental students. So, the objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and perception of undergraduate dental students about dental implants. Materials and methods This cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted after taking ethical clearance and approval from the Institutional Review Committee of B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences and informed consent from each dental college of Nepal. The sample included all those students who were present at the time of survey. Data collection were carried out during the academic schedules of the colleges, supervised, and monitored by the investigators themselves. Collected data were coded, entered in Microsoft excel 2013 and descriptive analysis was carried out. Results A majority of the total (54.6%) and 59.2% of 5th year respondents perceived to be moderately well-informed about dental implants. The main advantage of dental implants was thought to be longevity by 53.1% of total and 48.4% of 5th year students; only 27.6% of the total and 42.2% of 5th year students said the main advantage of dental implants is they are more conservative than other tooth-replacement modalities. Highest percentage of the total respondents (31.9%) said most important factor for implant success to be implant type and material, whereas 59.8% of 5th year students said case selection. Those who felt dental implants require additional oral hygiene maintenance and care by the patient and dentist were 58.4% of total and 75.1% of 5th year students. Over two-thirds (67.5%) of total thought that economic feasibility will limit use of dental implants in Nepal. The difficulty encountered to place implants was perceived to be average by 56.8% of total and 58.1% of 5th year. There were differences in the perception and knowledge at different academic levels, but not as expected. Conclusions It could not be concluded that knowledge about dental implants increased with increase in academic level. Even at the late-clinical year a majority of students gave unsatisfactory responses.
