Abstract
INTRODUCTION Psychiatrists use few symptoms when diagnosing depression. This study has aimed to know what symptoms are used by the psychiatrists to evaluate the severity of a depressive person compared to how they are evaluated when using a standardized instrument such as Hamilton's Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-17). METHODOLOGY A total of 100 depressed outpatients attended consecutively who met the ICD-10 criteria for depressive episode, dysthymia or adjustment disorders depressive types were studied. The depressed outpatients expressed their clinical situation on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) whose extreme values were the adjectives WELL and BAD. The psychiatrist evaluated them using a Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale on the state of the patient's depressed mood, and Hamilton's Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-17). The total scores obtained with those instruments and with the partial scores of the melancholic and anxious factors of the HRSD-17 were correlated (Pearson's R). RESULTS Psychiatrists give more importance to melancholic symptoms than to anxious ones to establish the severity of a depressed outpatient. Depressed outpatients give the same importance to their anxious and melancholic symptoms. In addition, the total score of the HRSD-17 is more influenced and shares a larger variance proportion with anxious symptoms than with melancholic ones. All the correlations calculated are statistically significant (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS The authors discuss the influence that the HRSD-17 can have on seemingly precocious results offered by some clinical trials of antidepressants drugs.

Abstract
This work describes concentrations of organochlorine pesticides in bottled drinking water (BDW) in Mexico City. The results of 36 samples (1.5 and 19 L presentations, 18 samples, respectively) showed the presence of seven pesticides (HCH isomers, heptachlor, aldrin, and p,p'-DDE) in bottled water compared with the drinking water standards set by NOM-127-SSA1-1994, EPA, and World Health Organization. The concentrations of the majority of organochlorine pesticides were within drinking water standards (0.01 ng/mL) except for beta-HCH of BW 3, 5, and 6 samples with values of 0.121, 0.136, and 0.192 ng/mL, respectively. It is important monitoring drinking bottled water for protecting human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sitaxentan inhibits the metabolism of warfarin, resulting in a need for adjustment of warfarin dose when both drugs are coadministered. We report the long-term effects on bleeding of acenocoumarol co-administered as part of conventional therapy for pulmonary hypertension with sitaxentan in a subset of patients enrolled in the Sitaxentan To Relieve ImpaireD Exercise-3 (STRIDE-3) study. MATERIALS AND METHODS STRIDE-3 is an ongoing, long-term, open-label trial, evaluating the safety and efficacy of sitaxentan, 100 mg once daily, in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Information on bleeding events was collected prospectively, including the type of event, severity, anticoagulant use and investigator attribution of causality. Coagulation tests were performed on a monthly basis. A clinically significant interaction was defined as an international normalized ratio (INR) >/= 5.0, or any minor bleeding event plus an INR > 2.0 and < 5.0. RESULTS Of 55 patients enrolled in STRIDE-3, 50 received acenocoumarol. Average follow-up was 158.6 +/- 57.6 weeks. The average dose of anticoagulant therapy was 3.9 +/- 1.3 mg week(-1) (range, 1.5-7.0 mg week(-1)). Following treatment, an INR >/= 5 in at least one INR determination was observed in 13 patients, although none of these patients had a clinically significant bleeding event. Dose reductions in acenocoumarol were performed to adjust target INR to 1.5-2.0. Two patients died of massive haemoptysis, but these episodes were not attributed to a drug interaction. Four patients with an INR > 2.0 and < 5.0 experienced a minor bleeding event (nosebleeds/gingivitis). CONCLUSIONS No clinically significant bleeding events were recorded with coadministration of sitaxentan and acenocoumarol in this patient subgroup. These results suggest that coadministration of sitaxentan and acenocoumarol is clinically manageable and well tolerated.

Abstract
We present a hybrid method based on a combination of classical molecular dynamics simulations, quantum-chemical calculations, and a model Hamiltonian approach to describe charge transport through biomolecular wires with variable lengths in presence of a solvent. The core of our approach consists in a mapping of the biomolecular electronic structure, as obtained from density-functional based tight-binding calculations of molecular structures along molecular dynamics trajectories, onto a low-dimensional model Hamiltonian including the coupling to a dissipative bosonic environment. The latter encodes fluctuation effects arising from the solvent and from the molecular conformational dynamics. We apply this approach to the case of pG-pC and pA-pT DNA oligomers as paradigmatic cases and show that the DNA conformational fluctuations are essential in determining and supporting charge transport.

Abstract
We have studied here the cellular distribution of several regulatory peptides in hormone-producing cells of the human pituitary during the fetal period. Immunohistochemistry was used to show the expression of several regulatory peptides, namely Angiotensin-II, Neurotensin and Galanin, at successive gestational stages and their co-localization with hormones in the human fetal adenohypophysis. Somatotrophs, gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs were differentiated earliest. At gestational week 9, Angiotensin-II immunoreactivity was co-localized only with growth hormone immunoreactivity in somatotrophs, one of the first hormone-producing cells to differentiate. This co-localization remained until week 37. Neurotensin immunoreactivity was present in gonadotrophs and thyrotrophs in week 23, after FSH and TSH hormone differentiation. Galanin immunoreactivity was present in all hormone-producing cell types except corticotrophs. The different pro-opiomelanocortin-derived peptides were detected at different stages of gestation and adrenocorticotrophic hormone immunoreaction was the last to be detected. Our results show an interesting relationship between regulatory peptides and hormones during human fetal development, which could imply that these peptides play a regulatory role in the development of pituitary function.

Abstract
This article reviews the current status of research about the histogenesis and morphofunctional characteristics of chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla. First, this study reports the selective migration, transcription and activation factors, and the morphological events of the chromaffin cell precursors during adrenal medulla development. Subsequently, the morphofunctional characteristics of adrenergic and non-adrenergic cells are considered, with particular reference to the characteristics of chromaffin granules and their biological steps, including their formation, traffic (storage, targeting and docking), exocytosis in the strict sense and recapture. Moreover, the relationship of chromaffin cells with other tissue components of the adrenal medulla is also revised, comprising the ganglion cells, sustentacular cells, nerves and connective-vascular tissue.

Abstract
In occluded femoral artery segments, intimal thickening occurred and abundant neovascularization from the surrounding microcirculation developed. Under these conditions, the contribution of vasa-vasorum as a source of supplementary population of cells during the early intimal thickening formation was studied. Using a technique that specifically labels venules, predominantly postcapillary venules, a marker-Monastral Blue B-was used as a tracer to follow the pericyte, endothelial cell and monocyte/macrophage lineages. In the first two days of the experiment, the marker was restricted to the wall of the periarterial microcirculation, being incorporated by endothelial cells, pericytes and some monocytes/macrophages crossing the venule walls. Later, the marker continues to be observed in some of the following cells: endothelial cells and pericytes of the newly-formed vessels, fibroblast-like cells, transitional cells between pericytes and fibroblast-like cells, macrophages migrating into the interstitium, myointimal cells and neoendothelial cells of the arterial lumen. These findings provide evidence that, during arterial intimal thickening formation in occluded arterial segments, the periarterial microvascularization contributes, in addition to recruited macrophages, newly-formed endothelial cells and a supplementary population of fibroblast-like cells and myointimal cells.

Abstract
Adult stem cells (ASC)--able to self renew and to intervene in maintaining the structural and functional integrity of their original tissue--can express greater plasticity than traditionally attributed to them, adopting functional phenotypes and expression profiles of cells from other tissues. Therefore, they could be useful to regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Transit-amplifying cells (TAC) are committed progenitors among the ASC and their terminally differentiated daughter cells. The ASC reside in a specialized physical location named niche, which constitutes a three-dimensional microenviroment where ASC and TAC are protected and controlled in their self-renewing capacity and differentiation. The niche can be located near or far from the recruitment point, requiring a short or long-distance cellular migration, respectively. This paper briefly reviews the current status of research about ASC plasticity, transdifferentiation, fusion and functional adaptation mechanisms. Subsequently, ASC and TAC occurrence, characteristics and location have been considered in the skin, cornea, respiratory tract, teeth, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, salivary glands, kidney, breast, prostate, endometrium, mesenchyma, bone marrow, skeletal and cardiac muscle, nervous system and pituitary gland. Moreover, the role of cancer ASC has also been revised.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic tool that has won acceptance in the past years for the vascular evaluation of living renal donor (LRD) candidates. We show the findings observed in a series of 102 candidates consecutively evaluated in our centre and present the correlation with the surgical data obtained in those individuals finally operated. METHODS From May 1995 to June 2005, 102 LRD candidates were evaluated with CT. Eighteen were also studied with digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Fifty-eight donors underwent nephrectomy. Prevalence of arterial and venous variants found on CT exams were analyzed, as well as the correlation with surgical and DSA data when they were obtained. RESULTS Forty-four percent candidates showed multiple renal arteries at least in one kidney. Seventy-one percent of right kidneys and 76% of left kidneys had a single arterial pedicle. Early branching was observed in 7.8% and 15.7% in right and left kidneys respectively. Venous variants were present in 17.5% and the 13.7% in right and left sides respectively. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CT to detect accessory arteries were 89%, 100% and 97% respectively when it was compared to DSA. Correlation with surgical data raised 93% for the presence of arterial variants. CONCLUSIONS Vascular variants in renal pedicle showed a high prevalence. Helical CT can effectively achieve all the information required prior to surgery as a sole imaging procedure in LRD candidates.

Abstract
When collection of ejaculated sperm samples is not possible, as is the case with wild species, the epididymides of sacrificed wild males become the only possible source of spermatozoa. Mature cauda epididymal spermatozoa display characteristics similar to those of ejaculated sperm cells. The present work proposes a sperm staining technique suitable for the morphometric evaluation of red deer epididymal sperm using a new computerized system. Epididymides from wild animals were extracted no later than 2h post mortem. After epididymal sectioning, sperm samples were collected, cooled to and equilibrated at 5 degrees C, and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Before staining, sperm samples were thawed for 20s at 37 degrees C, and used for the preparation of slides. Three different sperm stains were tested: Hemacolor, Diff-Quik, and Harris' Hematoxylin. Morphometric analyses of sperm samples were performed using the morphologic module of the ISAS. Two hundred spermatozoa per sample and stain were captured at random and analyzed. Sperm morphometric values were significantly affected by the staining technique used. Moreover, significant differences were observed between animals. In our study, Diff-Quik could be considered to be the best sperm staining method, as it provided the highest percentage of well automatically analyzed cells by the ISAS, and discriminates better between animals. This sperm staining technique also proved to be a useful method for characterizing and discriminating between sperm samples of different animals.

Abstract
CASE REPORT A female patient underwent laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in both eyes. The final degree of astigmatism in her left eye was double the preoperative value due to an error in data management. Complex surgery to both eyes was necessary to resolve the mistake. DISCUSSION Complications in refractive surgery can occur, however errors in data management must be minimized by double-checking. Solutions to resolve the errors made can be difficult and the entire staff must share responsibility to avoid these undesirable outcomes.

Abstract
We conducted two studies to improve preservation of rabbit semen. The objective of the first study was determine whether a glucose- and fructose-based extender with two different amounts of gelatin would solidify at 15 degrees C, and to evaluate the influence of gelatin supplementation on sperm motility parameters after storing semen up to 10 days at 15 degrees C. The fertility of rabbit semen diluted in the best gelatin-supplemented extender established in Study 1 and stored for up to 5 days was evaluated in the second study. In Study 1, semen was collected with an artificial vagina from 40 bucks. Each ejaculate was diluted to (80-100) x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL (1:3, semen/extender) at 37 degrees C in one of the three following glucose- and fructose-based extenders: control (standard liquid extender), semi-gel or gel (0.7 or 1.4 g gelatin in 100 mL extender, respectively). Pools of semen were allocated among 0.6 mL plastic artificial insemination (AI) guns. Thirty (10 per extender group) AI doses were immediately analyzed (0 h) and the remainder stored in a refrigerator (15 degrees C) for 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, or 240 h. All doses with gelatin extenders solidified at 15 degrees C. Semen samples, prewarmed to 37 degrees C, were evaluated with a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. The percentage of motile cells was significantly lower using the liquid compared to the gel extenders during semen storage from 0 to 96 h. Although significance was lost, these differences persisted after 240 h of storage. Motility of spermatozoa in the semi-gel extender was intermediate between that of liquid and gel extender throughout the study. Study 2 was performed on 1250 multiparous lactating does. Five homogeneous groups of 250 does previously synchronized were inseminated using semen previously stored for 120, 96, 72, 48 or 24 h, respectively. Rabbit does receiving 24 h-stored semen (diluted with the control extender used in Study 1) served as controls. The remaining females received seminal doses supplemented with 1.4 g/100mL gelatin (gel extender used in Study 1). Kindling rates for rabbit does inseminated with gelatin-supplemented (solid) semen doses stored for 48 h (88%) or 72 h (83%) were similar to those recorded for liquid controls stored for 24 h (81%), whereas rates significantly decreased when the semen was solid and stored for 96 h (64%) or 120 h (60%) before AI. In conclusion, rabbit spermatozoa were effectively stored in the solid state at 15 degrees C, with fertility preserved for up to 5 days. Solid storage of rabbit semen would facilitate commercial distribution.

Abstract
Electronic transport through DNA wires in the presence of a strong dissipative environment is investigated. We show that new bath-induced electronic states are formed within the band gap. These states show up in the linear conductance spectrum as a temperature dependent background and lead to a crossover from tunneling to thermal activated behavior with increasing temperature. Depending on the strength of the electron-bath coupling, the conductance at the Fermi level can show a weak exponential or even an algebraic length dependence. Our results suggest a new environmentally induced transport mechanism. This might be relevant for the understanding of molecular conduction experiments in liquid solution, such as those recently performed on poly(GC) oligomers in a water buffer (B. Xu et al., Nano Lett. 2004, 4, 1105).

Abstract
Neural injury triggers changes in the expression of a large number of gene families. Particularly interesting are those encoding proteins involved in the generation, propagation or restoration of electric potentials. The expression of the Na+, K+-ATPase subunit isoforms (alpha, beta and gamma) was studied in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and sciatic nerve of the rat in normal conditions, after axotomy and during regeneration. In normal DRG, alpha1 and alpha2 are expressed in the plasma membrane of all cell types, while there is no detectable signal for alpha3 in most DRG cells. After axotomy, alpha1 and alpha2 expression decreases evenly in all cells, while there is a remarkable onset in alpha3 expression, with a peak about day 3, which gradually disappears throughout regeneration (day 7). beta1 Is restricted to the nuclear envelope and plasma membrane of neurons and satellite cells. Immediately after injury, beta1 shows a homogeneous distribution in the soma of neurons. No beta2 expression was found. Beta3 Specific immunofluorescence appears in all neurons, although it is brightest in the smallest, diminishing progressively after injury until day 3 and, thereafter, increasing in intensity, until it reaches normal levels. FXYD7 is expressed weakly in a few DRG neurons (less than 2%) and Schwann cells. It increases intensely in satellite cells immediately after axotomy, and in all cell types at day 3. Transient switching of members of the Na+, K+-ATPase isoform family elicited by axotomy suggests variations in the sodium pump isozymes with different affinities for Na+, K+ and ATP from those in intact nerve. This adaptation may be important for regeneration.

Abstract
The Sperm-Class Analyser was validated for assessing morphometric parameters of the head and midpiece of unwashed and washed human ejaculated spermatozoa from volunteers providing a wide range of semen quality. A higher proportion of sperm could be assessed (86% fresh semen and 75% washed sperm) if Hemacolor staining was used rather than DiffQuik (80 and 73%) or Papanicolaou (78 and 68%). Different stains employed different fixatives and the area, length, width and perimeter of the sperm head was significantly larger for washed sperm stained by Hemacolor and DiffQuik. Acrosomal area ranged from 48 to 51% of the sperm head area and this percentage was larger for washed sperm stained with DiffQuik. Sperm at the end of the slide, distant from the initial semen droplet, were larger in area and perimeter than those at that site or in the middle. The high precision and reproducibility of the equipment required assessing only 50 sperm on the slide. Far greater variation was found in head width, relative acrosomal area and midpiece width between different slides prepared from the same ejaculate, highlighting the inherent variability within the ejaculate and smear preparation, and requiring more than one slide to be assessed.
