Abstract
AIMS To investigate differences in prostate cancer detection rates according to the level of glomerular filtration rates (GFR). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels of 4.0-10.0 ng/ml were analysed. Age, serum creatinine, estimated GFR, body mass index, total PSA (tPSA), free PSA (fPSA), per cent free PSA (%fPSA), comorbidities, biopsy Gleason sum and per cent positive core were retrospectively reviewed. All parameters were compared to show whether patients with GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m(2) (group A) have higher risk of prostate cancer than patients with GFR ≥ 60 (group B). The primary endpoint was cancer detection rate and the secondary endpoints were differences in mean tPSA, fPSA, %fPSA and pathologic outcomes. RESULTS A total of 1092 men (243 cancer patients) were included. Mean age was 65.8 ± 7.7 years. No differences in mean age and tPSA were found between groups A and B. Mean fPSA, %fPSA and cancer detection rate were significantly higher in group A than group B. The incidence of %fPSA <25% was significantly lower in group A than in group B. GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m(2) , fPSA and %fPSA <25% were significant predictors for the presence of prostate cancer in patients with tPSA between 4 and 10 ng/ml. However, %fPSA <25% was not a significant predictor for group A. CONCLUSIONS Because of the increased cancer detection rates in patients with CKD of stage ≥ 3 whose tPSA levels are 4.0-10.0 ng/ml, performing prostate biopsy should be actively considered in patients with CKD.

Abstract
To initiate resistance switching phenomena, it is usually necessary to apply a strong electric field to a sample. This forming process poses very serious obstacles in real nanodevice applications. In unipolar resistance switching (URS), it is well known that the forming originates from soft dielectric breakdown. However, the forming in bipolar resistance switching (BRS) is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the forming processes in Pt/Ta₂O₅/TaOx/Pt and Pt/TaOx/Pt nanodevices, which showed BRS and URS, respectively. By comparing the double- and single-layer systems, we were able to observe differences in the BRS and URS forming processes. Using computer simulations based on an 'interface-modified random circuit breaker network model', we could explain most of our experimental observations. This success suggests that the BRS forming in our Pt/Ta₂O₅/TaOx/Pt double-layer system can occur via two processes, i.e., polarity-dependent resistance switching in the Ta₂O₅ layer and soft dielectric breakdown in the TaOx layer. This forming mechanism can be used to improve the performance of BRS devices. For example, we could improve the endurance properties of Pt/Ta₂O₅/TaOx/Pt cells by using a small forming voltage.

Abstract
Transmission characteristics of polarization-dependent refractometer based on a surface long-period grating (SLPG) inscribed in a D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are investigated. The birefringence of SLPG produces the separation of transmission spectra for TE and TM polarization modes. We also measure the sensitivities of PCF-based SLPG to temperature and external refractive index change depending on the input polarization states. The SLPG-based sensor exhibits different temperature and ambient index sensitivities corresponding to TE and TM polarization modes. Therefore, the SLPG inscribed in D-shaped PCFs can effectively discriminate temperature and ambient index sensitivities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dopamine dysregulation in restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be varied by the severity of RLS, which could contribute to the conflicting results from previous functional neuroimaging studies on the central dopaminergic neurotransmission of RLS. The aim of this study was to observe whether reduced striatal dopaminergic neurotransmission is associated with moderate to moderately severe RLS. METHODS Thirteen elderly patients with RLS and 12 normal elderly controls were enrolled in the study. All the subjects were dopaminergic-drug naïve and twelve patients with RLS had the severity of moderate to moderately severe degree based on the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) Severity Scale. We compared dopamine transporter density (DAT) availability and D2 receptor density in the striatum between patients with RLS and controls using [(123)I]2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)tropane single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and [(123)I]iodobenzamide SPECT. RESULTS Dopamine transporter density of patients with RLS was increased in the caudate (P = 0.037), posterior putamen (P = 0.041), and entire striatum (P = 0.046) compared with that of normal controls. DAT density was higher in the anterior putamen of patients with RLS than controls, although statistically not significant (P = 0.079). There was no difference in the D2 receptor density between patients with RLS and normal controls in the whole striatum or any of subregions. CONCLUSIONS Dysregulation rather than simple upregulation or downregulation of central dopaminergic neurotransmission may underlie the pathogenesis of RLS, and decreased dopaminergic neurotransmission may cause moderate to moderately severe RLS in the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are cytochrome P450 epoxygenase metabolites of arachidonic acid that are metabolized into dihydroxyepoxyeicosatrienoic acids (DHET) by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). The current investigations were performed to examine the cardioprotective effects of UA-8 (13-(3-propylureido)tridec-8-enoic acid), a synthetic compound that possesses both EET-mimetic and sEH inhibitory properties, against ischaemia-reperfusion injury. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Hearts from C57BL/6 mice were perfused in Langendorff mode and subjected to ischaemia reperfusion. Mechanistic studies involved co-perfusing hearts with either 14,15-EEZE (a putative EET receptor antagonist), wortmannin or PI-103 (class-I PI3K inhibitor). H9c2 cells were utilized to investigate the protective effects against mitochondrial injury following anoxia reoxygenation. KEY RESULTS Perfusion of UA-8 significantly improved postischaemic left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and reduced infarction following ischaemia reperfusion compared with control and 11,12-EET. UA-7 (13-(2-(butylamino)-2-oxoacetamido)tridec-8(Z)-enoic acid), a compound lacking sEH inhibitory properties, also improved postischaemic LVDP, while co-perfusion with 14,15-EEZE, wortmannin or PI-103 attenuated the improved recovery. UA-8 prevented anoxia-reoxygenation induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and cell death in H9c2 cells, which was blocked by co-treatment of PI-103. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS UA-8 provides significant cardioprotection against ischaemia reperfusion injury. The effects are attributed to EETs mimetic properties, which limits mitochondrial dysfunction via class-I PI3K signalling.

Abstract
Desorption of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) from contaminated sediments was investigated to clarify the effect of stabilizing agents on Cd and Pb desorption kinetics. The desorbed aqueous Cd and Pb concentrations and the residual amounts of Cd on the sediments in the desorption tests were best fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetics with the highest R(2) values among the models used in the kinetic studies. The average residual Cd on sediments were 24% and 19% less in the presence of apatite and birnessite, respectively, than in the absence of them. However, the Pb desorption was not affected by the stabilizing agents. The negligible aqueous concentrations of desorbed Cd and Pb in the presence of apatite and birnessite suggest the stabilization of desorbed Cd that was facilitated by apatite and birnessite and Pb. The kinetics study with Cd shows that the rate constants are not affected, but the desorption extents are affected in the presence of apatite and birnessite. The Tessier sequential extraction method and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure indicate that Pb is more strongly bound on the stabilizing agents than Cd. Overall, birnessite and apatite can be successfully applied in remediation of Cd and Pb contaminated sediment.

Abstract
Magnetic anisotropy properties of amorphous ferromagnetic CoSiB/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA, K(u)) were systematically investigated as a function of CoSiB layer thickness (t(coSiB)) and Pt layer thickness (t(Pt)). In two series of [CoSiB t(coSiB)Pt t(P1)]5 multilayers, the perpendicular coercivity (H(c)) increased to reach a maximum and then decreased with further increase in both t(coSiB) and t(Pt), due to intermixing of CoSiB/Pt interfaces. Particularly, using the amorphous soft magnetic CoSiB, the coercivity became very sensitive to the CoSiB thickness. These multilayer films exhibited a high K(u) of 2 x 10(6) erg/cc and a high H(c) of 360 Oe with marked squareness. It was found that even after annealing at 350 degrees C, the CoSiB/Pt multilayers had a high PMA and their H(c) increased.

Abstract
We investigate a reversible percolation system showing unipolar resistance switching in which percolating paths are created and broken alternately by the application of an electric bias. Owing to the dynamical changes in the percolating paths, different from those in classical percolating paths, a detailed understanding of the structure is demanding and challenging. Here, we develop a scaling theory that can explain the transport properties of these conducting paths; the theory is based on the fractal geometry of a percolating cluster. This theory predicts that two scaling behaviors emerge, depending on the topologies of the conducting paths. We confirm these theoretical predictions experimentally by observing material-independent universal scaling behaviors in unipolar resistance switching.

Abstract
Nucleic acid sample storage is of paramount importance in forensic science as well as in epidemiological, clinical, and genetic laboratories. Millions of biological samples, including cells, viruses, and DNA/RNA, are stored every year for diagnostics, research, and forensic science. PCR has permitted the analysis of minute sample quantities. Samples such as bone, teeth, touch samples, and some sexual assault evidence may yield only low-quality and low-quantity DNA/RNA. Efficient storage of the extracted DNA/RNA is needed to ensure the stability of the sample over time for retesting of the CODIS STRs, mtDNA, YSTRs, mRNA, and other future marker-typing systems. Amplification of some or all of these markers may fail because the biological material has been highly degraded, contains inhibitors, is too low in quantity, or is contaminated with contemporary DNA. Reduction in recovery has been observed with refrigerated liquid DNA extracts and also those exposed to multiple freeze-thaw cycles. Therefore, the development of optimal storage and amplification methods is critical for successful recovery of profiles from these types of samples since, in many cases, retesting is necessary. This review is divided into three sections. The Introduction and Background covers forensic DNA storage, factors that influence DNA stability, and a brief review of molecular strategies to type non-optimal DNA. Section I covers the importance of DNA extract storage in forensic and non-forensic DNA databanks and the mechanisms responsible for loss during storage. Finally, Section II covers strategies and technologies being utilized to store DNA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Thromboembolic events related to CAS continue to be the main limitation to the widespread use of this technique as a first-line treatment for carotid occlusive disease. Our aim was to evaluate thromboembolism during CAS using DWI for catheterization techniques of the carotid artery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two consecutive patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis underwent CAS involving 1 of 2 carotid artery catheterization techniques: One used a 7F or 8F catheter (group 1, n = 16) and the other used a coaxial system in which a 7F or 8F catheter was used in conjunction with a 4F or 5F catheter (group 2, n = 16). DWI was performed before and after CAS. Clinical variables, the number and location of NES on DWI after CAS, were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS NES on DWI occurred in 53% of all patients. The incidence of NES was significantly higher in patients 65 years of age and older versus those younger than 65 years of age (P = .013). All NESs were asymptomatic, and their rate of occurrence did not differ significantly between groups 1 and 2. The incidence of NES in the other territories that were outside that of the treated carotid artery (P = .004) and the incidence of multiple NESs (P = .04) were significantly higher in group 1. CONCLUSIONS NES in the other territories mainly arises from the atherosclerotic aortic arch and arch vessels during the manipulation of endoluminal devices. The carotid artery catheterization technique using the coaxial system with a 7F or 8F catheter in conjunction with a 4F or 5F catheter reduced the incidence of NES in the other territories.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been associated with the risk of restless legs syndrome (RLS), suggesting that dysregulation of serotonergic neurotransmission may provoke or exacerbate RLS. METHODS We compared the availability of serotonin transporter (SERT) between 16 drug-naïve patients with RLS and 16 healthy controls. SERT was measured in the pons and medulla via [(123)I]-2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-iodophenyl) tropane (beta-CIT) SPECT. A ratio of specific to nonspecific brain uptake (V(3)'') was used for all comparisons. RLS was diagnosed according to the criteria proposed by the National Institute of Health, and its severity was measured using the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) Severity Scale. RESULTS The availability of SERT was similar in the RLS group and the control group with regards to the pons (1.24 +/- 0.31 vs 1.24 +/- 0.25, p > 0.1) and the medulla (0.99 +/- 0.25 vs 1.00 +/- 0.23, p > 0.1). However, IRLSSG Severity Scale scores increased with decrease of SERT availability in both the pons (beta = -0.50, t = -3.19, p = 0.009) and the medulla (beta = -0.42, t = -2.44, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Although serotonin transporter (SERT) availability in pons and medulla was similar in the restless legs syndrome (RLS) group and the control group, the severity of RLS symptoms increased as the availability of SERT decreased. These data partially support the hypothesis that an increase of serotonergic neurotransmission in the brainstem may exacerbate RLS, possibly via dual modulations on striatal dopaminergic neurotransmission and on the activities of spinal motor and sensory neurons.

Abstract
The seasonal performance of four differently configured constructed wetland systems was compared for the treatment efficiency of nonpoint source pollution. Dead plants in the constructed wetlands increased the nitrogen removal rate during winter by providing organic carbon, which is essential for the denitrification process. However, when the wetlands released phosphorus from the dead plants, the removal rate of phosphorus decreased. After seven growing seasons, plant coverage was nearly 100%, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was lowered to 1.3-5.4 mg/L. Open-water sections were then constructed inside the wetlands, which resulted in enhanced DO concentrations as well as improved treatment efficiency of nutrients and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Overall, performance of the constructed wetland was improved BOD, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus with the establishment of open water sections in the constructed wetland system.

Abstract
The effects of structural properties and their changes during cellulose hydrolysis on the enzymatic hydrolysis rate have been studied from the reaction mechanism point of view. Important findings are the following: (1) The crystallinity index (CrI) of partially crystalline cellulose increases as the hydrolysis reaction proceeds, and a significant slowing down of the reaction rate during the enzymatic hydrolysis is, in large part, attributable to this structural change of cellulose substrate. (2) The crystallinity of completely disordered cellulose, like phosphoric-acid-treated cellulose, does not change significantly, and a relatively high hydrolysis rate is maintained during hydrolysis. (3) The specific surface area (SSA) of partially crystalline cellulose decreases significantly during enzymatic hydrolysis while the change in SSA of regenerated cellulose is found to be negligible. (4) The value of degree of polymerization (DP) of highly ordered crystalline cellulose remains practically constant whereas the change in DP of disordered regenerated cellulose is found to be very significant. (5) Combination of these structural effects as well as cellulase adsorption, product inhibition, and cellulase deactivation all have important influence on the rate of cellulase reaction during cellulose hydrolysis. More experimental evidence for a two-phase model, which is based on degradation of cellulose by simultaneous actions of cellulase complex on the crystalline and amorphous phases, has been obtained. Based on experimental results from this study and other results accumulated, the mode of cellulase action and a possible reaction mechanism are proposed.

We observed two types of reversible resistance switching (RS) effects in a NiO film: memory RS at low temperature and threshold RS at high temperature. We were able to control the type of RS effects by thermal cycling. These phenomena were explained using a new dynamic percolation model that can describe the rupture and formation of conducting filaments. We showed that the RS effects are governed by the thermal stability of the filaments, which arise from competition between Joule heating and thermal dissipation. This work provides us understandings on basic mechanism of the RS effects and their interrelation.

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the potential subchronic inhalation toxicity of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) via whole-body exposure in F344 rats. Groups of 10 rats of each sex were exposed to DMDS vapor by whole-body exposure at concentrations of 0, 5, 25, or 125 ppm for 6 h/day, 5 days/wk for 13 wk. All the rats were sacrificed at the end of treatment period. During the test period, clinical signs, mortality, body weights, food consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, gross findings, organ weights, and histopathology were examined. At 25 ppm, a decrease in the body weight gain, food intake, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was observed in the males, but not in the females. However, at 125 ppm, a decrease in the body weight gain, food intake, and thymus weight and an increase in the weights of adrenal glands were observed in both genders. Serum biochemical investigations revealed a decrease in the AST, ALT, BUN, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and triglyceride levels and an increase in the glucose level. In contrast, no treatment-related effects were observed in the 5 ppm group. The toxic potency of DMDS was slightly higher in males than that in females. In these experimental conditions, the target organ was not determined in rats. The no-observed-adverse-effect concentration (NOAEC) was found to be 5 ppm, 6 h/day for male rats and 25 ppm, 6 h/day for female rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS This study aimed to develop a brief, reliable and valid test for cognitive function of severely demented patients. METHODS We constructed the Severe Cognitive Impairment Rating Scale, which consisted of 11 items covering memory, language, visuospatial function, frontal function and orientation, and investigated its reliability and validity on 267 subjects [normal: 65, very mild Alzheimer's disease (AD): 42, mild AD: 58, moderate AD: 36, severe AD: 44, profound AD: 22]. RESULTS The internal consistency obtained by Cronbach's coefficient alpha was 0.93. The interrater reliability and test-retest reliability in the moderately to severely impaired subjects with an MMSE score of <or=14 was 0.99 (p < 0.001) and 0.90 (p < 0.001), respectively. It showed significant correlation with Severe MMSE (r = 0.96, p < 0.01), MMSE (r = 0.86, p < 0.01) and Clinical Dementia Rating (r = -0.83, p < 0.01). It was robust to both the floor effect in the severe/profound stage of AD and the ceiling effect in the mild/moderate stage of AD. Exploratory factor analysis yielded 2 factors (automatic informational processing and controlled informational processing) accounting for 73.5% of the total variance. CONCLUSIONS The Severe Cognitive Impairment Rating Scale is a valid and reliable test for evaluating the cognitive function of advanced AD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS We investigated the demographic influence on the performance of the Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R) and provided normative data of the HDS-R in the elderly. METHODS The HDS-R was administered to 803 community-dwelling cognitively normal elderly subjects aged 55 years or over. Cognitive disorders and psychiatric disorders were strictly excluded using the CERAD-K assessment packet and the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. The demographic influence on the performance of the HDS-R was examined using multiple linear regression analyses, and compared with that on the performance of the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) using the Chow test and t statistics. Overlapping strata were used in developing age-, education- and gender-specific normative data of the HDS-R. RESULTS Age, education, and gender influenced significantly the performance of the HDS-R, and explained 22.5% of the total score variance. Older age, lower education, and male gender were associated with lower performance of the HDS-R. However, the demographic influence on the HDS-R was much weaker than that on the MMSE (t = 5.578, d.f. = 800, p < 0.001). The normative data of the HDS-R stratified by age (60-69, 70-79, > or =80), education (0-6, 7-12, > or =13), and gender were presented. CONCLUSIONS The HDS-R was more robust to demographic influences than the MMSE, and normative data may contribute to improving further its diagnostic accuracy for dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To compare the prevalence and characteristics of depression in vascular dementia (VaD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) after adjusting for dementia severity and gender. METHODS One hundred and eight pairs of VaD and AD patients matched for dementia severity and gender were assessed. RESULTS Major depressive disorder (MDD) was more prevalent in the VaD group than in the AD group (20.4% in VaD, 10.2% in AD, p = 0.04, Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel, CMH, test) regardless of the dementia severity and gender. The odds ratio for developing MDD in the VaD group versus the AD group was estimated to be 2.20 (95% confidence interval = 1.02-4.74). Neurovegetative symptoms such as 'felt tired and weak all the time' (30.6% in VaD, 13.9% in AD, p = 0.003, CMH test) and 'changed weight without trying' (16.7% in VaD, 6.5% in AD, p = 0.02, CMH test) were more prevalent in the VaD group than in the AD group. CONCLUSION Depression in VaD was quantitatively and qualitatively different from that in AD regardless of the severity of dementia and gender; depression was more prevalent, severer and more retarded and vegetative in VaD than in AD.

Abstract
The antibody monitoring system (AMS, GTI Inc) is a solid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) crossmatch test for the detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody to donor-specific solubilized HLA class I and class II antigens. The objective of this study was to compare the results of the AMS assay with donor-specific anti-HLA IgG antibodies (DS-HLA Abs), as determined by ELISA panel reactive antibody (PRA) and the flow cytometric crossmatch test (FCXM). A total of 107 sera were screened for the presence of HLA Abs by ELISA PRA (LAT-M, One-Lambda Inc), the DS-HLA Abs were determined in 34 serum samples (31.8%) by an ELISA panel (LAT class I and class II, One-Lambda Inc) and FCXM. The FCXM and AMS assays were performed with matched lymphocytes from 56 donors. There was a significant degree of concordance (89.7%) between the two tests (P < .001). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of AMS assay to detect DS-HLA Abs was 88.2%, 94.5%, 88.2%, and 94.5%, respectively. The AMS is a simple, objective test, which has several advantages over the cell-based crossmatch test, such as elimination of non-HLA antibody reactivity, elimination of non-donor-specific antibody reactivity, no need for viable cells, and preparation of the donor's HLA antigens in advance. In summary, this study suggested that AMS may be useful as a supportive crossmatch test or as a monitoring test after transplantation to detect class I or class II DS-HLA Abs.

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and practical scheme for simultaneous measurement of bending and temperature based on a single sampled chirped fiber Bragg grating with multiple resonant peaks, which is embedded on a flexible cantilever beam. The wavelength spacing of the grating can be changed by adjusting the bending curvature change, since the compressive strain gradient induced by the bending of the cantilever beam changes the chirp ratio of the fiber grating. However, the wavelength spacing of the fiber grating is not changed by the temperature variation; the multiple resonant wavelengths are only shifted into the longer wavelength because of the positive thermal-expansion and thermo-optic coefficients of the fiber grating. Consequently, the proposed scheme allows for discrimination between two effects of bending and temperature.
