Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE After endovascular coiling of intracranial aneurysms, round dark parenchymal lesions believed to be particulate metal are sometimes encountered in MR imaging studies of the brain. We used SWI to assess the frequency of such occurrences, in addition to exploring likely causes and clinical implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed 700 MR imaging studies performed between September 2018 and March 2019 at our institution as follow-up monitoring of coiled intracranial aneurysms. Any sizeable (>5 mm) rounded dark-signal lesions encountered were presumed to be metallic. The magnitudes and locations of such lesions were recorded. In patients with these lesions, pertinent procedural documentation was screened for devices used, including coils, microcatheters, microguidewires, and stents. Medical records were also examined to determine whether any related symptoms ensued. RESULTS Twenty patients (2.8%) exhibited a total of 25 lesions on SWI. Diameters ranged from 5 to 11 mm (median, 8 mm). All except 2 lesions were located in brain regions downstream from aneurysms, but all lesions occupied vascular territories of vessels used to place guiding catheters. Other than the Synchro 14, which was routinely deployed, no device was regularly used in patients with SWI-detectable lesions; and none of the affected patients developed focal neurologic symptoms as a consequence. CONCLUSIONS Although the origins remain unclear, distal embolization of particulate metal distal to coiled cerebral aneurysms is occasionally observed on follow-up MR imaging studies. Such lesions, however, seem to have no apparent clinical impact.

Abstract
<sec> <title>BACKGROUND</title> Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) share common risk factors. They could therefore be expressed in a single patient. However, the prevalence, clinical characteristics and prognosis of individuals with comorbid IPF and COPD are not known. </sec> <sec> <title>METHOD</title> From 2003 to 2007, the Korean Interstitial Lung Disease Study Group created a register for idiopathic interstitial pneumonia using 2002 ATS/ERS (American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society) criteria. Of the 1546 IPF patients assessed, 143 had decreased lung function consistent with COPD (IPF-COPD). COPD was diagnosed based on age (≥40 years) and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1 sec [FEV1]/forced vital capacity [FVC] ratio < 0.7). </sec> <sec> <title>RESULTS</title> The median age of the IPF-COPD group was 71.0 years (interquartile range 66.0-76.0); most patients were male (88.1%). FVC (%) was significantly higher in the IPF-COPD group; however, FEV1 (%) was significantly lower in the IPF-COPD group (P < 0.001). Diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was not significantly different between the two groups. In survival analysis, age and FVC (%), but not COPD, were significantly associated with prognosis (respectively P = 0.003, 0.001 and 0.401). COPD severity was also not related to prognosis (P = 0.935). </sec> <sec> <title>CONCLUSION</title> The prevalence of IPF-COPD was estimated to be ∼9.2% among all IPF patients; prognosis of patients with IPF-COPD was not worse than those with IPF alone. </sec>.

Abstract
<sec id="st1"> <title>OBJECTIVE</title> To estimate the long-term performance of the interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) in predicting active tuberculosis (ATB) development among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients in an intermediate TB burden country. </sec> <sec id="st2"> <title>DESIGN</title> A retrospective cohort study was conducted. HIV-infected patients with 1 IGRA result but no current or previous ATB who had been retained in care for 1 year were enrolled and observed for ATB development from 2006 to 2016. </sec> <sec id="st3"> <title>RESULTS</title> Sixty-two IGRA-positive and 354 IGRA-negative patients were observed for a median period of 4.03 years. ATB incidence in IGRA-positive vs. negative patients was respectively 15.24/1000 person-years (py) (95%CI 4.15-39.02) vs. 0.67/1000 py (95%CI 0.01-3.68) (P = 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of the IGRA were respectively 80.0% (28.4-99.5%), 85.9% (82.1-89.1%), 6.5% (4.0-10.2%) and 99.7% (98.4-99.9%). Among the 62 IGRA-positive patients, 25 were treated for latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) and 37 were not. Patients with LTBI treatment did not develop ATB, while four cases of ATB occurred among patients without LTBI treatment. Among the 257 IGRA-negative patients who received a follow-up IGRA, 34 (12.9%) patients converted to positive. No ATB developed in IGRA converters. </sec> <sec id="st4"> <title>CONCLUSION</title> Screening for LTBI using IGRAs and LTBI treatment can be useful to prevent ATB in an intermediate TB burden country. </sec>.

Abstract
The National Institute of Radiological Sciences has investigated multiple-ion therapy using energetic beams of helium, carbon, oxygen, and neon ions, to improve treatment outcomes of refractory cancer. For this therapy, it is necessary to ensure the helium-ion beam purity to avoid irradiation by unwanted ions. Here, we develop a measurement method for monitoring beam purity. This method can measure the charge number of the ions in a high-purity beam using an ionization chamber and Faraday cup. In addition, it can be used to detect the contamination of the clinical helium-ion beam. We perform beam experiments to evaluate our beam-purity monitoring method and predict that our method is capable of detecting contamination below 1%.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a global psychiatric disorder with no established biomarker. There is growing evidence that functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has the ability to aid in the diagnosis and prediction of the treatment response of MDD. The aim of this review was to systematically review, and gather the evidence from existing studies that used fNIRS signals in the diagnosis of MDD, correlations with depression symptomatology, and the monitoring of treatment response. METHODS PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for published English articles from 1980 to June 2019 that focused on the application of fNIRS for (i) differentiating depressed versus nondepressed individuals, (ii) correlating with depression symptomatology, and in turn (iii) monitoring treatment responses in depression. Studies were included if they utilized fNIRS to evaluate cerebral hemodynamic variations in patients with MDD of any age group. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. RESULTS A total of 64 studies were included in this review, with 12 studies being longitudinal, while the rest were cross-sectional. More than two-thirds of the studies (n = 49) had acceptable quality. fNIRS consistently demonstrated attenuated cerebral hemodynamic changes in depressed compared to healthy individuals. fNIRS signals have also shown promise in correlating with individual symptoms of depression and monitoring various treatment responses. CONCLUSIONS This review provides comprehensive updated evidence of the diagnostic and predictive applications of fNIRS in patients with MDD. Future studies involving larger sample sizes, standardized methodology, examination of more brain regions in an integrative approach, and longitudinal follow-ups are needed.

Background
Fabry disease (FD) is X-linked genetic disorder caused by the deficiency or absent activity of lysosomal α- galactosidase. When the heart is involved, progressive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the key feature. Although, LVH is not present in all subjects, some of them progress with LVH despite enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). The present study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patient of FD without overt LVH, but progresses with their left ventricular mass index (LVMI).
Method : This study includes subjects carrying genetic mutations for FD without LVH (n = 12) in a single tertiary center. ‘Decreasing LVMI group (Group1)’ was defined when pre-ERT LVMI minus last LVMI value obtained by echocardiography was positive, and when negative, defined as ‘Increasing LVMI group (Group 2)’. The baseline characteristics and echocardiographic parameters including global strain was analyzed.
Result : Total 6 patients were classified as Group 1 and 2 each. The median age at diagnosis for male was 21 vs 27 for each group, and 21 vs 31 for female. The median follow-up duration was 4.0 vs 5.7 yr. The antibody formation for replaced enzyme was 3 for Group 2 and any family member who developed overt LVH was much 1 vs 3 for group 1 vs 2. Initial 3 plane GLS was worse and showed trend to drop in Group 2.
Conclusion : In the Fabry patients get worse with their LVMI but still not developed overt LVH despite enzyme replacement therapy, there are some clinical and echo-parameter difference. These findings could suggest insufficient enzyme replacement therapy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the change of Ras and its guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) proteins in the bovine corpus luteum (CL) during estrous cycle and investigate protein-protein interaction between hormone receptors and Ras proteins via angiogenetic and apoptotic factors using bioinformatics database. The bovine CLs at proliferation phase (PP), secretion phase (SP), and regression phase (RP) were dissected from abattoir ovaries (n = 4/stage), whole of the tissue samples was used to analyze two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE), mRNA, and protein analysis. The protein-protein interaction between the Ras GTPases proteins and hormone receptors were analyzed using Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) database. The Ras protein activator like 3 (RASAL3), Ras GTPase activating protein 3 (RASA3), Ras guanine nucleotide exchange factors 1 beta (RasGEF1B) were discovered by the 2-DE and mass spectrometry in bovine CLs, and the protein spots of RASA3 and RASAL3 were significantly increased in the SPCL compared to the PPCL, whereas the RasGEF1B was reduced in the PPCL (P < 0.05). The mRNA and proteins expression of progesterone receptor, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), angiopoietin 1 (Ang1), VEGF receptor2 (VEGFR2), and Tie2 were significantly increased, but intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic factors were decreased in PPCL and SPCL compared to RPCL (P < 0.05). Based on STRING database, we determined that RasGEF1B is activated by ERα via VEGFA and VEGFR2, then RasGEF1B activates H-Ras and R-Ras. In addition, the RasGAP protein was significantly increased, however, the RasGEF, H-Ras and R-Ras proteins were reduced in SPCL compared to PPCL and RPCL (P < 0.05). In summary, the RasGEF and Ras proteins were raised during the development, whereas the RasGAP was increased when development was completed, then the Ras and its GTPases dramatically decreased at the regression in bovine CL. In conclusion, these results suggest that Ras and Ras GTPases could be changed during development and regression, activated by the ERα via angiogenetic signaling during proliferation, and may be important to understanding of the Ras and its GTPases system for estrous cycle in bovine CL.

Abstract
AIMS Quorum quenching (QQ) is an attractive strategy for mitigating biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). However, the effects of QQ on the activated sludge (AS) process have not been adequately evaluated. This study investigated the long-term effects of QQ on a laboratory-scale anoxic-oxic MBR, focusing on AS performance and microbial community. METHODS AND RESULTS Anoxic-oxic MBRs with and without QQ were operated for 91 days. QQ did not affect COD and TN removal efficiencies over the experimental period, during which its activity remained >90%. QQ reduced floc size by approximately 8% but had no effect on biomass concentration. AS microbial communities were regularly analysed using massively parallel sequencing. AS bacterial communities were temporally dynamic irrespective of QQ presence, for example, a temporal increase in bacterial diversity and a temporal decay of community similarity. QQ counteracted the temporal change in diversity and the temporal distance-community decay. Community comparison revealed that QQ changed the successional trajectory of the AS community at a late period, because it decelerated temporal changes of specific members, such as Thiothrix and Sphingomonadaceae*. Correlation networks revealed that QQ increased network clustering, complexity and density. The combined results suggest that the tighter microbial association by QQ increased the community resistance. CONCLUSIONS QQ can enhance the diversity and stability of the AS community in MBR by counteracting the innate temporal change in community structure. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Our findings are useful for the further advancement of QQ-based strategies in engineered microbial environments.

Abstract
1. The aim of this trial was to determine the optimal supplementation level of a xylanase enzyme from Trichoderma citrinoviride on growth performance, apparent ileal and total tract nutrient retention, intestinal morphology, and intestinal concentration of volatile fatty acids in broiler chickens.2. A total of 600 broiler chickens (Ross 308) of mixed sex were randomly allotted to four treatments, on the basis of similar body weight. The dietary treatments were made from a corn-wheat-soy based diet supplemented with either 0, 3750, 7500, or 11 250 XU/kg xylanase and were fed to 32 d of age.3. A linear response to increasing dietary xylanase was demonstrated for overall weight gain (P < 0.05) and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05). The apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and gross energy, and the coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CIAD) of N and soluble non-starch polysaccharides were linearly improved when xylanase was added to the diet (P < 0.05). Moreover, a linear increase (P < 0.05) was observed in the CIAD of Arg, Lys, and Try with increasing dietary levels of xylanase.4. The viscosity of digesta in ileum was linearly decreased when dietary xylanase level increased (P < 0.05).5. An increase in villus height of the duodenum and jejunum were observed with increasing dietary levels of xylanase (linear, P < 0.05).6. Overall, the results showed that the effects of dietary xylanase supplementation on broiler performance was determined through effects on nutrient availability and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is no guideline in Hong Kong regarding respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunoprophylaxis for children with heart disease because of a lack of local data on RSV infection. Therefore, this study evaluated the epidemiology and impact of RSV infection on children with heart disease in Hong Kong, with the goal of providing recommendations regarding RSV immunoprophylaxis. METHODS This multicentre retrospective case-control study on paediatric RSV infection was conducted in four local regional hospitals from 2013 to 2015. The patients' demographic and clinical data were retrieved and analysed. RESULTS There were 3538 RSV hospitalisations during the study period, and the mortality rate was 0.14%. Some RSV seasonality was present in Hong Kong, primarily in spring and summer. Respiratory syncytial virus infection was positively correlated with relative humidity and negatively correlated with wind speed and atmospheric pressure. Patients with heart disease had a more severe outcome than those without, including longer median hospital stay (4 vs 2 days, P<0.001), higher complication rate (28.6% vs 9.8%, P<0.001), and higher rates of intensive care (11.6% vs 1.4%, P<0.001) and mechanical ventilation (3.6% vs 0.4%, P=0.003). Complications in non-cardiac patients included myocarditis and Kawasaki disease. Predictors of severe RSV infection in patients with heart disease were heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and severe airway abnormalities associated with congenital heart disease. CONCLUSIONS Respiratory syncytial virus infection occurs mainly in spring and summer in Hong Kong, and is related to meteorological conditions. Respiratory syncytial virus infection poses a heavy disease burden on children with heart disease. A local guideline on RSV immunoprophylaxis for these children is therefore needed.

Abstract
We report on the nuclear dependence of transverse single-spin asymmetries (TSSAs) in the production of positively charged hadrons in polarized p^{↑}+p, p^{↑}+Al, and p^{↑}+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The measurements have been performed at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.4) over the range of transverse momentum (1.8<p_{T}<7.0 GeV/c) and Feynman x (0.1<x_{F}<0.2). We observed positive asymmetries for positively charged hadrons in p^{↑}+p collisions, and significantly reduced asymmetries in p^{↑}+A collisions. These results reveal a nuclear dependence of TSSAs for charged-hadron production in a regime where perturbative techniques are applicable. These results provide new opportunities to use p^{↑}+A collisions as a tool to investigate the rich phenomena behind TSSAs in hadronic collisions and to use TSSAs as a new handle in studying small-system collisions.

Investigated the effect of feeding time on behavior and stress responses in pregnant sows under isocaloric conditions. Eighteen sows (Landrace × Yorkshire); BW 248.6 ± 2.8 kg; parity 3.30 ± 0.39); were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 feeding times. Corn-soybean meal-based diet was fed once at: 0730 (Control, T1), 1130 (T2), and 1530 h (T3). On average, sows received 7190 kcal ME d−1 during gestation from 2.25 kg of diet formulated to contain SID Lys/ME of 1.71 g/Mcal. Saliva samples were collected every 2 h for 12 h in stalls on d 52 of pregnancy and assayed for cortisol using ELISA technique. Behavior data were collected 24 h for 7 d from d 53 of gestation by affixing a Remote Insights ear tag to each sow after 21 d adaptation period. Each sow had 120,960 data points categorized into: “Active,” “Feed” or “Dormant”. Data were analyzed using GLIMMIX procedure of SAS 9.4. Statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05, and a trend as 0.05 < P ≤ 0.10. Sow was the experimental unit. A 24 h area under the curve (AUC) was estimated by trapezoidal summation method. Adjustment for multiple comparisons was based on Tukey Kramer’s method. Sows fed daily at 0730 had both lower feeding and total activity compared with sows fed at 1130 h (P < 0.02) but similar to sows fed at 1530 h (P > 0.05). Feeding sows at 1130 h daily resulted in reduced cortisol AUC compared with 1530 h fed sows (P < 0.04) but similar to sows fed at 0730 h (P > 0.05). In conclusion, feeding sows daily at 1130 resulted in increased feed and total activity but reduced cortisol concentration, suggesting that elevated sow activity might not necessary indicate activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Behavior data were collected for 7 d from d 53 of gestation by affixing a Remote Insights ear tag to each sow. Each sow had 120,960 data points categorized into: “Active,” “Feed” or “Dormant”. The data were analyzed using GLIMMIX procedure of SAS 9.4 with treatment as fixed effect and sow as random effect. Results were considered statistically significant when P < 0·05 and were considered as trends when P ≤ 0·10. Sow was the experimental unit. A 24 h area under the curve (AUC) was calculated by trapezoidal method. The P-values were adjusted for multiplicity based on Tukey Kramer’s method. A 24 h total activity and total feeding activity AUC were reduced in sows fed 2× daily compared with sows fed 1× and 3× daily (P < 0.01). A 12 h cortisol AUC was lower for sows fed 2× daily relative to treatment groups fed 1× and 3× daily (P < 0.02). In conclusion, feeding pregnant sows twice daily may improve sow welfare by reducing feeding activity, total activity, and the activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Abstract
The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.4<p_{T}<3 GeV/c) direct-photon yields from Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable dN_{ch}/dη reveals that the low-momentum (>1 GeV/c) direct-photon yield dN_{γ}^{dir}/dη is a smooth function of dN_{ch}/dη and can be well described as proportional to (dN_{ch}/dη)^{α} with α≈1.25. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different A+A collision systems. At a given beam energy, the scaling also holds for high p_{T} (>5 GeV/c), but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional sqrt[s_{NN}]-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

Abstract
UNLABELLED HIV-infected men under the age of 50 years had a lower bone mass compared to that of HIV-uninfected men. Lower CD4 T cell counts, independent of whether antiretroviral therapy (ART) was used, were associated with lower BMD. HIV-infected patients with low CD4 T cell counts may need follow-up and intervention regarding bone health, including younger patients. INTRODUCTION HIV-infected patients have a low bone mineral density (BMD) owing to multifactorial interaction between common osteoporosis risk factors and HIV-related factors, including chronic inflammation and ART. Although HIV infection and ART might affect bone metabolism, little data is available for patients aged under 50 years. We aimed to investigate the association of HIV infection-induced low CD4 T cell counts and ART with BMD in men aged under 50 years. METHODS We performed an age- and body mass index-matched case-control study. BMD values of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected men (< 50 years) were compared, and HIV-infected men were stratified by CD4 T cell counts and ART use. RESULTS After adjusting confounders, HIV-infected men with CD4 T cell counts ≥ 500 cells/μL (n = 28) and < 500 cells/μL (n = 139) had lower BMD at the femoral neck (FN, p < 0.001) and total hip (TH, p < 0.001) than HIV-uninfected men (n = 167). HIV-infected men with CD4 T cell counts < 500/μL had lower BMD at the lumbar spine (LS, p = 0.034) than those with counts of ≥ 500 cells/μL, but not at FN and TH. The CD4 T cell count (γ = 0.169, p = 0.031) was positively correlated with BMD at LS. There was no significant difference in the BMD (p = 0.499-> 0.999) between the ART-naïve (n = 75) and ART-user group (n = 92). CONCLUSIONS Despite their relatively younger age, HIV-infected men had a lower BMD than HIV-uninfected men. Lower CD4 T cell counts, irrespective of ART, might result in lower bone mass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) control among adolescents is a critical component of tuberculosis (TB) elimination in Korea. OBJECTIVE To compare the cost-effectiveness of the following contact screening strategies for LTBI among high-school adolescents after TB outbreaks: QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT), the tuberculin skin test (TST), or TST/QFT-GIT (two-step strategy). METHOD The costs of post-TB outbreak screening strategies were calculated using a mixed (top-down and bottom-up) cost analysis method and expressed in 2015 US dollars. Cost-effectiveness was evaluated using a decision analysis model from the health system perspective, comparing cumulative health care costs and the total number of TB cases averted. RESULTS In a hypothetical cohort of 1000 students, screening using the TST-alone strategy averted 1.6 TB cases at a total cost of US$52 566. The QFT-GIT-alone strategy helped avert 2.0 TB cases, but was associated with a much higher total cost (US$108 435), resulting in an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of US$140 933/TB case averted. The two-step TST/QFT-GIT strategy was worse than the TST-alone strategy, averting 1.3 TB cases at US$75 267. CONCLUSION The TST-alone strategy was the most cost-effective; the QFT-GIT-alone strategy averted the greatest number of TB cases but incurred the highest cost in contact investigation for school TB outbreaks.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The plasma n-3 fatty acid level was 26.2% lower in patients with osteoporotic hip fracture than in those with osteoarthritis. In all patients, n-3 fatty acid was positively associated with bone mineral density and inversely associated with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b level in bone marrow aspirates, reflecting the bone microenvironment. INTRODUCTION Despite the potential beneficial role of n-3 fatty acid (FA) on bone metabolism, the specific mechanisms underlying these effects in humans remain unclear. Here, we assessed whether the plasma n-3 level, as an objective indicator of its status, is associated with osteoporosis-related phenotypes and bone-related markers in human bone marrow (BM) samples. METHODS This was a case-control and cross-sectional study conducted in a clinical unit. n-3 FA in the blood and bone biochemical markers in the BM aspirates were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and immunoassay, respectively. BM fluids were collected from 72 patients who underwent hip surgery because of either osteoporotic hip fracture (HF; n = 28) or osteoarthritis (n = 44). RESULTS After adjusting for confounders, patients with HF had 26.2% lower plasma n-3 levels than those with osteoarthritis (P = 0.006), and each standard deviation increment in plasma n-3 was associated with a multivariate-adjusted odds ratio of 0.40 for osteoporotic HF (P = 0.010). In multivariate analyses including all patients, a higher plasma n-3 level was associated with higher bone mass at the lumbar spine (β = 0.615, P = 0.002) and total femur (β = 0.244, P = 0.045). Interestingly, the plasma n-3 level was inversely associated with the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b level (β = - 0.633, P = 0.023), but not with the bone-specific alkaline phosphatase level, in BM aspirates. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide clinical evidence that n-3 FA is a potential inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis that favors human bone health.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Analyses using the largest Korean cohort of adrenal incidentaloma (AI) revealed that subtle cortisol excess in premenopausal women and reduced dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) in postmenopausal women and men are associated with bone mineral density (BMD) reduction in Asian patients with subclinical hypercortisolism (SH). INTRODUCTION Few studies evaluated bone metabolism in Asians with SH. We investigated associations of cortisol and DHEA-S, an adrenal androgen, with BMD in Asians with AI, with or without SH. METHODS We used cross-sectional data of a prospective multicenter study from Korea. We measured BMD, bone turnover markers, cortisol levels after 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (1-mg DST), DHEA-S, and baseline cortisol to DHEA-S ratio (cort/DHEA-S) in 109 AI patients with SH (18 premenopausal, 38 postmenopausal women, and 53 men) and 686 with non-functional AI (NFAI; 59 premenopausal, 199 postmenopausal women, and 428 men). RESULTS Pre- and postmenopausal women, but not men, with SH had lower BMDs at lumbar spine (LS) than those with NFAI (P = 0.008~0.016). Premenopausal women with SH also had lower BMDs at the hip than those with NFAI (P = 0.009~0.012). After adjusting for confounders, cortisol levels after 1-mg DST demonstrated inverse associations with BMDs at all skeletal sites only in premenopausal women (β = - 0.042~- 0.033, P = 0.019~0.040). DHEA-S had positive associations with LS BMD in postmenopausal women (β = 0.096, P = 0.001) and men (β = 0.029, P = 0.038). The cort/DHEA-S had inverse associations with LS BMD in postmenopausal women (β = - 0.081, P = 0.004) and men (β = - 0.029, P = 0.011). These inverse associations of cort/DHEA-S remained significant after adjusting for cortisol levels after 1-mg DST (β = - 0.079~- 0.026, P = 0.006~0.029). In postmenopausal women, the odds ratios of lower BMD by DHEA-S and cort/DHEA-S was 0.26 (95% CI, 0.08-0.82) and 3.40 (95% CI, 1.12-10.33), respectively. CONCLUSION Subtle cortisol excess in premenopausal women and reduced DHEA-S in postmenopausal women and men may contribute to BMD reduction in Asians with SH.

Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are often comorbid. Drinking tends to increase following trauma, which may exacerbate PTSD-related symptoms. Despite a clear relationship between excessive alcohol use and PTSD, how alcohol impacts the expression of traumatic fear remains unclear. This study aims to determine the neurobehavioral impact of chronic alcohol (ethanol; EtOH) on the expression of established fear memories in C57BL/6 N mice. We show that chronic EtOH selectively augments cued fear memory generalization and impairs fear extinction retrieval, leaving the expression of the original cued response intact. Immunohistochemistry for Arc/arg3.1 (Arc) revealed EtOH-induced decreases in Arc expression in the infralimbic cortex (IL) and basolateral amygdala complex (BLA) that were associated with cued fear memory overgeneralization. Chemogenetic stimulation of IL pyramidal neurons reversed EtOH-driven fear memory overgeneralization, identifying a role for the IL in cued fear memory precision. Considering the modulatory influence of the IL over conditioned fear expression, these data suggest a model whereby chronic EtOH-driven neuroadaptations in the IL promote fear memory overgeneralization. These findings provide new mechanistic insight into how excessive alcohol use, following exposure to a traumatic event, can exacerbate symptoms of traumatic fear.

Abstract
We report the transfer printing of GaN-based microscale vertical-type light-emitting diodes (μ-VLEDs) using a functional layer and a biomimetic stamp. An oxide-based functional layer is inserted onto the structure of a μ-VLED and used to separate the chip from the μ-VLED wafer by absorbing the pulse of a UV pulse laser during pick-up of the transfer printing process. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based biomimetic stamps have been fabricated to mimic the gecko lizard cilia for improved adhesion and repeatability. The biomimetic stamp has an adhesion force of 25.6 N/cm2, which is 12 times the adhesion of a flat stamp; an adhesion force of 10 N/cm2 or more was maintained after 100,000 repeated adhesion tests. A flexible 10 × 10 prototype array on a polyimide substrate was fabricated, and its bending test results indicated that the strain effect on the forward voltage and the output power was less than 1%. The stable bending test results of the prototype indicate that μ-VLEDs using biomimetic stamps allow the necessary stability for practical transfer printing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a measure to prevent healthcare-associated infections in healthcare settings. There is limited evidence of the effectiveness of IPC programmes in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). AIM To review and analyse the effectiveness and the components of IPC programmes in LTCFs for older adults. METHODS Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane CENTRAL) were searched systematically for English-language articles assessing IPC interventions in LTCFs, published over the last decade (2007-2016). The components of IPC programmes were analysed based on the World Health Organization (WHO) manuals for improving IPC activities. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of studies using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the risk-of-bias assessment tool for non-randomized studies. FINDINGS Seventeen studies met the eligibility criteria; 10 studies were randomized trials (58.8%) and the others were non-randomized trials to examine the impact of IPC programmes on infection and/or performance outcomes of healthcare workers. None of the included studies implemented all of the WHO core components. Behavioural change strategies using education, monitoring and feedback were reported to be successful interventions for reducing the threat of healthcare-associated infections. Generally, studies using four or more elements of the WHO multi-modal strategy reported significant reductions in infection rates. CONCLUSIONS There is some evidence for the effectiveness of IPC interventions using education, monitoring, feedback and four or more elements of the WHO multi-modal strategy to control healthcare-associated infections in LTCFs.

Abstract
Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of cancer. However, genetic alterations in metabolism-related genes are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to identify whether somatic mutations in OGDH, PPAT and PCCA genes known to be involved in amino acid or nucleotide metabolism are mutated in gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). By public database search, we identified that OGDH, PPAT and PCCA genes harbor mononucleotide repeats that may serve as mutation targets in cancers with microsatellite instability (MSI). We analyzed the repeats for the presence of the mutations in 90 GCs and 141 CRCs using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and samples of 10 patients with shifted bands were sequenced. We found frameshift mutations of OGDH (3 cases), PCCA (5 cases) and PPAT (2 cases) in the cancers. These mutations were exclusively detected in MSI-high (MSI-H), and not in MSI-low or MSI-stable (MSI-L/MSS) cancers. We also analyzed 16 CRCs for the presence of intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) and found that one CRC harbored regional ITH for OGDH frameshift mutation showing very rare frequency of OGDH mutation ITH in colorectal cancer tissues. Our data indicate that amino acid/nucleotide metabolism-related genes OGDH, PPAT and PCCA acquire somatic mutations in MSH-H GCs and CRCs and that mutational ITH may occur in at least some of these tumors. Collectively, our results may extend our insight into the involvement of amino acid/nucleotide metabolism in the pathogenesis of cancer for, in particular, MSI-H GCs and CRCs.

Abstract
We study unconventional superconductivity in exfoliated single crystals of a promising three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductor candidate, Nb-doped Bi2Se3 through differential conductance spectroscopy and magneto-transport. The strong anisotropy of the critical field along the out-of-plane direction suggests that the thin exfoliated flakes are in the quasi-2D limit. Normal metal-superconductor (NS) contacts with either high or low transparencies made by depositing gold leads onto Nb-doped Bi2Se3 flakes both show significant enhancement in zero bias conductance and coherence dips at the superconducting energy gap. Such behavior is inconsistent with conventional Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory. Instead, we discuss how our results are consistent with p-wave pairing symmetry, supporting the possibility of topological superconductivity in Nb-doped Bi2Se3. Finally, we observe signatures of multiple superconducting energy gaps, which could originate from multiple Fermi surfaces reported earlier in bulk crystals.

Abstract
Asymmetric nuclear collisions of p+Al, p+Au, d+Au, and ^{3}He+Au at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production dN_{ch}/dη in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow v_{2} over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

Abstract
The effects of different fabric materials namely weave designs (plain and satin) and fabric counts (5 × 5 and 6 × 6) on the properties of laminated woven kenaf/carbon fibre reinforced epoxy hybrid composites were evaluated. The hybrid composites were fabricated from two types of fabric, i.e., woven kenaf that was made from a yarn of 500tex and carbon fibre, by using vacuum infusion technique and epoxy resin as matrix. The panels were tested for tensile, flexural, and impact strengths. The results have revealed that plain fabric is more suitable than satin fabric for obtaining high tensile and impact strengths. Using a fabric count of 5 × 5 has generated composites that are significantly higher in flexural modulus as compared to 6 × 6 which may be attributed to their structure and design. The scanned electron micrographs of the fractured surfaces of the composites demonstrated that plain woven fabric composites had better adhesion properties than satin woven fabric composites, as indicated by the presence of notably lower amount of fibre pull out.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the outcome of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) according to factors associated with necessity for longer treatment in conjunction with the duration of treatment. METHODS We prospectively collected the data of patients with SAB consecutively during 12 to 39 months from 11 hospitals. If multiple episodes of SAB occurred in one patient, only the first episode was enrolled. Factors associated with necessity for longer treatment were defined as follows: persistent bacteraemia, metastatic infection, prosthesis and endocarditis. If any of the factors were present, then the case was defined as longer antibiotic treatment warranted (LW) group; those without any factors were defined as shorter antibiotic treatment sufficient (SS) group. Poor outcome was defined as a composite of 90-day mortality or 30-day recurrence. Duration of antibiotic administration was classified as <14 or ≥14 days in the SS group and <28 or ≥28 days in the LW group. RESULTS Among 2098 cases, the outcome was analysed in 1866 cases, of which 591 showed poor outcome. The SS group accounted for 964 cases and the LW group for 852. On multivariate analysis, age over 65 years, pneumonia, higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and chronic liver diseases were risk factors for poor outcome. Administration of antibiotics less than the recommendation was associated with poor outcome, but this significance was observed only in the LW group (adjusted odds ratio = 1.68; 95% confidence interval, 1.00-2.83; p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Inappropriately short antibiotic treatment was associated with poor outcome in the LW group. Vigilant evaluation for risk factors to determine the duration of treatment may improve the outcome among patients with SAB.

Abstract
We investigated theoretically the temperature dependence of the quantum optical transition of quasi 2-Dimensional Landau splitting system, in GaN and ZnS. We apply the Quantum Transport theory (QTR) to the system in the confinement of electrons by square well confinement potential. We use the projected Liouville equation method with Equilibrium Average Projection Scheme (EAPS). Through the analysis of this work, we found the increasing properties of Quantum Transition Line Shapes (QTLSs) and the Quantum Transition Line Widths (QTLWs) of CdS and GaN with the temperature we also found that QTLW, γ(T) of ZnS < γ(T) of GaN in γ = 394 μm.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Despite ethnic differences in cortisol sensitivity, only one study in Caucasians has assessed trabecular bone score (TBS) in patients with subclinical hypercortisolism (SH). We showed that both subtle cortisol excess and reduced adrenal androgen may contribute to impaired bone quality in Asian women with SH. INTRODUCTION One study in Caucasians has assessed trabecular bone score (TBS), an index of bone microstructure, in adrenal incidentaloma (AI) patients with subclinical hypercortisolism (SH). There are ethnic differences in cortisol sensitivities between Caucasian and Asian populations. We investigated the associations of cortisol and the adrenal androgen dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) with TBS in AI patients with SH, adrenal Cushing's syndrome (CS), and nonfunctional AI (NFAI). METHODS We measured TBS, cortisol levels after the overnight 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test (1 mg DST), and cortisol/DHEA-S in 61 patients with SH (30 men; 31 women), 19 with adrenal CS (4 men; 15 women), and 355 with NFAI (213 men; 142 women). RESULTS After adjusting for confounders, the serum cortisol level after 1 mg DST was inversely correlated with TBS in men (β = -0.133, P = 0.045) and women (β = - 0.140, P = 0.048). Higher cortisol/DHEA-S ratio was associated with lower TBS in women (β = - 0.252, P < 0.001), but not men. This inverse association of cortisol/DHEA-S ratio in women remained statistically significant after adjusting for the serum cortisol level after 1 mg DST (β = - 0.221, P = 0.008). Compared with women with NFAI, women with SH had 2.2% lower TBS (P = 0.040). Deteriorated bone microstructure (TBS < 1.230) was associated with the serum cortisol level after 1 mg DST (odds ratio [OR], 2.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-4.53) and cortisol/DHEA-S ratio (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.03-4.08). CONCLUSIONS Subtle cortisol excess in both genders and reduced DHEA-S, especially in women, may contribute to impaired bone quality in Asian patients with SH.

Abstract
Three hundred birds (1 day old) were randomly assigned to 6 groups (n = 50 birds/treatment) and fed a basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with Allium hookeri (AH) root (1 or 3%). At day 14, half of the birds in each group were orally challenged with E. maxima 41A (1 × 104 cells/chicken), followed by C. perfringens infection (1 × 109 cfu/chicken) on day 18. Necrotic enteritis (NE)-associated infections and intestinal immune response were assessed by average body weight gain, lesion score, and oocyst shedding. The effect of dietary supplementation, AH, on transcript levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and tight junction proteins and mucin protein in the jejunum, were quantified by quantitative real-time (qRT)-PCR. At day 20, birds fed with diet supplementation (3% of AH) significantly weighted more than the control group. Although the NE-challenged had significantly reduced average body weight gain, there was no significance in the effect between diet × NE-challenge interactions on the average body weight gain. Among the NE-challenged groups, gut lesion score and oocyst shedding were significantly decreased in birds given AH (1 or 3%) compared to the control group. There was a correlation between diet and NE infection with regards to interleukin (IL)-17A, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). The up-regulated transcript levels of cytokines IL-8, IL-17A, iNOS, and LITAF by NE challenged groups were significantly reduced by AH (1 or 3%) supplementation. Down-regulated expression levels of tight junction (TJ) proteins: junctional adhesion molecule 2 (JAM2), occluding, and intestinal mucin 2 (MUC2) by NE challenge, was up-regulated by the addition of AH (1 or 3%) supplementation. All TJ proteins (JAM2, ZO1, Ocluddin and MUC2) in the jejunum had a significant diet × NE-challenge interaction. These findings demonstrate that dietary supplementation of AH in chicken feed could be beneficially used to improve chicken health against NE.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic parasite causing significant health problems to humans and animals. In recent years, a number of investigations about the seroprevalence of T. gondii in China have been reported, but little is known on the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in sheep in northern China. In the present study, a total of 288 sheep serum samples were collected from Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Hebei provinces of northern China for T. gondii antibody survey using a latex agglutination test (LAT). Of these, 87 (30.2%) serum samples were positive for antibodies to T. gondii, and the antibody titres ranged from 1:64 to 1:1,024. Seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep was 17.1% in Inner Mongolia, 33.8% in Heilongjiang, 24.6% in Jilin and 46.3% in Hebei. Age and rearing system significantly affected seropositivity. The present survey indicates antibodies to T. gondii are widely prevalent in sheep in northern China, which may cause public health problems in these provinces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumour carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), a hypoxia-inducible tumour-associated cell surface enzyme, is thought to acidify the tumour microenvironment by hydrating CO2 to form protons and bicarbonate, but there is no definitive evidence for this in solid tumours in vivo. METHODS We used 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) of the extracellular pH probe imidazolyl succinic acid (ISUCA) to measure and spatially map extracellular pH in HCT116 tumours transfected to express CAIX and empty vector controls in SCID mice. We also measured intracellular pH in situ with 31P MRS and measured lactate in freeze-clamped tumours. RESULTS CAIX-expressing tumours had 0.15 pH-unit lower median extracellular pH than control tumours (pH 6.71 tumour vs pH 6.86 control, P = 0.01). Importantly, CAIX expression imposed an upper limit for tumour extracellular pH at 6.93. Despite the increased lactate concentration in CAIX-expressing tumours, 31P MRS showed no difference in intracellular pH, suggesting that CAIX acidifies only the tumour extracellular space. CONCLUSIONS CAIX acidifies the tumour microenvironment, and also provides an extracellular pH control mechanism. We propose that CAIX thus acts as an extracellular pH-stat, maintaining an acidic tumour extracellular pH that is tolerated by cancer cells and favours invasion and metastasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Acute pesticide poisoning has long been a serious problem as a method of suicide worldwide. This poisoning is a highly fatal condition that requires a rapid and precise diagnosis for adequate treatment. However, various studies on mortality predictor factors have been insufficient for whole pesticide treatments. We hypothesized that the initial plasma anion gap (AG) and base deficit (BD) are reliable prognostic factors. METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed 561 patients with a diagnosis of acute pesticide poisoning between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2017. The initial AG and BD values were divided into quartiles according to the number of patients. Survival at 30 days from admission was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn, and the areas under the curve for AG and BD for mortality were calculated. RESULTS: Fifty-eight (10.3%) of 561 patients died within 30 days. The highest AG quartile (>22 mEq/L) was associated with an increased risk of 30-day hospital mortality. Compared to patients with an AG less than 14.7 mEq/L, these patients had a 4.18-fold higher risk of 30-day hospital mortality and the highest BD quartile (>7.9 mEq/L) was associated with an increased risk of 30-day hospital mortality. Compared to patients with a BD less than 1.4 mEq/L, these patients had 2.23-fold higher risk of 30-day hospital mortality. The areas under the ROC for AG and BD curve were 0.699 and 0.744, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Initial high AG and BD values could predict mortality and require precise intensive care.

Abstract
SummaryThrombocytopenia is a common finding in malaria. In clinical trials, recombinant macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) causes a reversible, dose-dependent thrombocytopenia, and high M-CSF has been reported in autoimmune thrombocytopenias. P-selectin, which is secreted into the plasma following platelet/endothelial activation or damage, is elevated in certain consumptive thrombocytopenic disorders. The relationships between thrombocytopenia, M-CSF and P-selectin were analysed in 63 patients with severe (n = 13) or uncomplicated (n = 26) P. falciparum (PF) or P. vivax (PV) malaria (n = 24). On admission, 69% of PF patients and 75% of PV patients were thrombocytopenic (platelets < 150 X 109/1). M-CSF was elevated in PF (3021 ± 1844 pg/ml) and PV (2602 ± 1668 pg/ml) patients, compared to controls (589 ± 200 pg/ml). The platelet count was inversely correlated with M-CSF in PF (r = -0.681), and in PV malaria (r = -0.548). Elevated P-selectin was found in severe PF malaria, but not in PV malaria. Severe PF malaria was associated with marked thrombocytopenia, very high M-CSF, elevated P-selectin and compelling evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC). Platelet counts, M-CSF and P-selectin returned to control values in 7-14 days. These data suggest that elevated M-CSF in malaria, by enhancing macrophage activity, may result in increased macrophage-mediated platelet destruction. Further, platelet/endothelial activation or damage, as measured by P-selectin, or DIC could intensify thrombocytopenia in severe PF malaria, but does not appear to contribute to thrombocytopenia in uncomplicated PF or PV malaria.
