Abstract
Abstract
Background
Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) survival has dramatically improved in recent decades. As such, clinicians now face the complex long-term interactions of congenital and chronic heart diseases. One area of continuing mortality in this group is arrhythmias, especially in those with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). With these developments in survival, the long-term outcomes of the CIED systems and their effects on mortality are beginning to be elucidated.
Aims
This study aims to compare the effects of system location, surgical history, patient demographics and congenital disease complexity on lead survival, complication distributions and patient mortality in ACHD CIED patients.
Methods
A retrospective cohort of 250 ACHD CIED patients with follow up at a heart centre was collated from clinical correspondence letters and CEID records. Data was collected on demographics, mortality and lead survival and complications. Survival data was analysed with Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves and hazard ratio tests.
Results
Complex ADHD patient survival was less than the non-complex cohort (HR 0.38, 95% CI 0.22–0.67, p<0.01). Lead survival was longer in non-surgical patients (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.13–1.78, p<0.01) and longer in female patients (HR 1.35, 95% CI 1.07–1.69, p<0.01) (Figure 1). No significant differences in mortality or lead survival were seen between epicardial and transvenous systems.
Conclusions
Complex ACHD is associated with worse patient mortality in CEID patients. Surgical history and male gender are associated with worsened lead survival.

Meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of dobutamine versus milrinone in acute decompensated heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Eur Heart J 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Objective
This study aims to evaluate the difference between dobutamine and milrinone in patients presenting with acute decompensated heart failure (AHF).
Background
Inotropes are indicated for treating AHF, especially in patients with concomitant hypoperfusion indicative of cardiogenic shock. However, previous studies have not identified the optimal inotrope. We sought to compare outcomes associated with milrinone versus dobutamine in patients with AHF.
Methods
A systematic literature search was performed to identify relevant trials from inception to August 2021. Our primary outcome of interest was mortality. Analysis was sub-categorized according to subpopulation, including AHF, AHF with cardiogenic shock (AHF-shock), AHF with a bridge to transplantation (AHF-BTT), and AHF with destination therapy (AHF-DT). Summary effects were calculated using a fixed-effects model as risk ratio or mean difference with 95% confidence intervals for all the clinical endpoints.
Results
Ten studies, including one randomized controlled trial with 21,106 patients, were included in the analysis (4918 patients were in the Milrinone group, while 15188 were in the Dobutamine group). Milrinone was associated with a lower risk of mortality in patients with AHF [relative risk (RR) 0.87; confidence interval (CI):0.79–0.97; p<0.05, heterogeneity I2=0%] with event rates of 9.4% vs. 9.8% [number needed to treat (NNT) of 250]. Milrinone was also associated with improved mortality with RR 0.76 (0.79–0.95; p<0.05) in patients with AHF-DT. There was a non-significant trend towards improved mortality in AHF-shock patients. However, AHF-BTT patients had a non-significant trend towards improved mortality with dobutamine. There was no difference between the two strategies for the outcomes of acute kidney injury, initiation of renal replacement therapy, mechanical ventilation, arrhythmias, symptomatic hypotension, and length of hospital stay (LOS) in the overall population. Intensive care unit (ICU) LOS was lower in AHF-shock patients in the milrinone group, whereas dobutamine was associated with a lower length of ICU stay in AHF patients.
Conclusion
The cumulative data comparing milrinone with dobutamine indicate an overall marginal benefit of milrinone compared to dobutamine in the totality of patients with AFH with or without cardiogenic shock, and whether or not they are bridged to transplantation or destination assist device. More appropriately powered prospective studies are needed to identify a conclusive benefit of one inotrope over another.

Abstract
The development has been seen as’security interference,’ and few researchers feel that advances drive us into a period of ‘zero information assurance.’ This paper analyses the new GDPR rule in EU Law, fitting all the affiliations controlling or getting ready individual data surprisingly with the EU region. Moreover, it will cover the challenges to executing the proportional in India. Any affiliation taking care of data relating to a perceived or unmistakable individual, an implied data subject, needs to adjust to GDPR. The results of not doing so can be liberal. Fines can show up at 4% of the affiliation’s overall turnover, or as much as 20 million Euros, whichever is higher. Simultaneously, this looks empowering for the EU district; executing the equal in India would speak to another plan of troubles. With India moving towards a serious economy with the allotment of Aadhaar and an ever-expanding dependence on information, the concerns over advanced security, data confirmation, and security are upheld. A Data Protection law is the need vital. Further, in the wake of the Supreme Court concluding that security is a significant right, there is a creating want to move rapidly in India to have set up a definitive fitting framework to address the concerns over computerized security, data protection, and insurance. In an Indian setting, various components, such as Nuclear families and social viewpoints, have covered the necessity for singular space and security for quite a while. Regardless, urbanization, digitization, and changing lifestyles have created enthusiasm among Indians for Privacy and confirmation of the information they share, unequivocally on cutting-edge stages.

Abstract
Recent advancements in nanotechnology have enabled us to develop sophisticated multifunctional nanoparticles or nanosystems for targeted diagnosis and treatment of several illnesses, including cancers. To effectively treat any solid tumor, the therapy should preferably target just the malignant cells/tissue with minor damage to normal cells/tissues. Graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles have gained considerable interest owing to their two-dimensional planar structure, chemical/mechanical stability, excellent photosensitivity, superb conductivity, high surface area, and good biocompatibility in cancer therapy. Many compounds have been functionalized on the surface of GO to increase their biological applications and minimize cytotoxicity. The review presents an overview of the physicochemical characteristics, strategies for various modifications, toxicity and biocompatibility of graphene and graphene oxide, current trends in developing GO-based nano constructs as a drug delivery cargo and other biological applications, including chemo-photothermal therapy, chemo-photodynamic therapy, bioimaging, and theragnosis in cancer. Further, the review discusses the challenges and opportunities of GO, GO-based nanomaterials for the said applications. Overall, the review focuses on the therapeutic potential of strategically developed GO nanomedicines and comprehensively discusses their opportunities and challenges in cancer therapy.

Hypertriton Production in p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:252003. Abstract
The study of nuclei and antinuclei production has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. The first measurement of the production of _{Λ}^{3}H in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV is presented in this Letter. Its production yield measured in the rapidity interval -1<y<0 for the 40% highest-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is dN/dy=[6.3±1.8(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10^{-7}. The measurement is compared with the expectations of statistical hadronization and coalescence models, which describe the nucleosynthesis in hadronic collisions. These two models predict very different yields of the hypertriton in charged particle multiplicity environments relevant to small collision systems such as p-Pb, and therefore the measurement of dN/dy is crucial to distinguish between them. The precision of this measurement leads to the exclusion with a significance larger than 6.9σ of some configurations of the statistical hadronization model, thus constraining the theory behind the production of loosely bound states at hadron colliders.

Olaparib@human serum albumin nanoparticles as sustained drug-releasing tumor-targeting nanomedicine to inhibit growth and metastasis in the mouse model of triple-negative breast cancer. J Drug Target 2022; 30:1088-1105. [PMID: 35723068 DOI: 10.1080/1061186x.2022.2092623] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 10/18/2022]
Abstract
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor olaparib demonstrated therapeutic effectiveness in highly metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). However, olaparib offers a weak therapeutic response in wild-type BRCA cancers due to the drug's poor bioavailability. Here, a bioinspired/active-tumor targeted nanoparticles system of human serum albumin with physical entrapment of olaparib was prepared via a low-energy desolvation technique using the crosslinker glutaraldehyde. The developed OLA@HSA NPs were nanosize (∼140 nm), kinetically stable with a low polydispersity (0.3), exhibited olaparib entrapment (EE 76.01 ± 2.53%, DL 6.76 ± 0.22%), and sustained drug release at pH 7.4 with an enhancement of drug release in acidic pH. OLA@HSA NPs decreased the half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of olaparib by 1.6, 1.8-fold in 24 h and 2.2, 2.4 folds in 48 h for human (MDA-MB 231) and mouse (4T1) TNBC cells, respectively, mediated by their enhanced time-dependent cellular uptake than free olaparib. The OLA@HSA-OA NPs induced concentration-dependent phosphatidylserine (apoptotic marker) externalization and arrested the cell population in the G2/M phase in both the tested cell lines at a higher level than free olaparib. The NPs formulation increased DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, and ROS generation than the free olaparib. The in vivo study conducted using 4T1-Luc tumor-bearing mice demonstrated strong tumor growth inhibitory potential of OLA@HSA NPs by elevating apoptosis ROS generation and reducing the level of the antiproliferative marker, Ki-67. OLA@HSA NPs reduced the occurrence of lung metastasis (formation of metastasis nodules decreased by ∼10 fold). OLA@HSA NPs could be a promising nanomedicine for the TNBC treatment.

Polarization of Λ and Λ[over ¯] Hyperons along the Beam Direction in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:172005. Abstract
The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.

Abstract
A bioinspired chitosan/vitamin E conjugate (Ch/VES, 1:4) was synthesized, optimized based on chitosan's molecular weight (15, 300 kDa), and was assembled to entrap oxaliplatin (OXPt). 1H NMR, infrared spectroscopy, chromatography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, drug release, hemolysis, and stability studies were performed to characterize OXPt@Ch/VES micelles. The therapeutic efficacy of the micelles was tested in vitro in ER+/PR+/HER2- and triple-negative sensitive/resistant breast cancer cells, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 via cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, nuclear staining, DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial membrane potential, ROS generation, apoptosis, and cell cycle assays and in vivo using 4T1(Luc)-tumor-bearing mice. OXPt@Ch/VES Ms exhibited decreased IC50 towards MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 (sensitive/resistant) than OXPt. OXPt@Ch/VES Ms caused extensive DNA damage, mitochondrial depolarization, apoptosis, and cell-growth arrest (G2/M). OXPt@Ch/VES Ms treatment retarded tumor growth significantly, prolonged survival, and decreased nephrotoxicity than OXPt. The OXPt@Ch/VES Ms could serve as a potential nanomedicine to overcome conventional OXPt-mediated drug resistance/nephrotoxicity in breast cancer.

Abstract
Low bone mineral density represents as a major cause of morbidity in thalassemic patient. The mechanism depends upon several factors. Transfusion dependent iron over load cause decrease secretion of growth hormone, insulin, thyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone, sex hormone and vitamin D from different endocrine organs which ultimately causes impairment of adequate bone mass achievement. Other causes of low bone mass are iron chelating agent and bony expansion due to increase erythropoiesis. To find out the frequency of low bone mineral density in thalassemia patients who are transfusion dependent. This study was designed as a cross sectional observational study, which was analyzed in the Department of Haematology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka and National Institution of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) from September 2017 to August 2018. It had been performed over total 72 (Age ≥06 years to ≤40 years) thalassaemic patients who are transfusion dependent. Presence of bone diseases was detected by Bone mineral density (BMD). Seventy-two (72) patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia, aged 6 to 39 years were enrolled. Mean age of patients was 20.9±7.2 years. Among them, 57(79.2%) patients were detected as a normal bone mineral density and fifteen (20.8%) patients were detected as a low bone mineral density in the left femoral neck. In transfusion dependent thalassaemic patient, Low bone mass was significantly associated with low BMI, total number of blood transfusion and serum ferritin level remarkably. This survey has established a new path for early detection of low bone mass and helped in prevention of bone loss and its sequel by starting early treatment in these groups of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND : TB was the leading cause of death from a single infectious pathogen globally between 2014 and 2019. Fine-scale estimates of TB prevalence and case notifications can be combined to guide priority-setting for strengthening routine surveillance activities in high-burden countries. We produce policy-relevant estimates of the TB epidemic at the second administrative unit in Bangladesh. METHODS : We used a Bayesian spatial framework and the cross-sectional National TB Prevalence Survey from 2015–2016 in Bangladesh to estimate prevalence by district. We used case notifications to calculate prevalence-to-notification ratio, a key metric of under-diagnosis and under-reporting. RESULTS : TB prevalence rates were highest in the north-eastern districts and ranged from 160 cases per 100,000 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 80–310) in Jashore to 840 (UI 690–1020) in Sunamganj. Despite moderate prevalence rates, the Rajshahi and Dhaka Divisions presented the highest prevalence-to-notification ratios due to low case notifications. Resolving subnational disparities in case detection could lead to 26,500 additional TB cases (UI 8,500–79,400) notified every year. CONCLUSION : This study is the first to produce and map subnational estimates of TB prevalence and prevalence-to-notification ratios, which are essential to target prevention and treatment efforts in high-burden settings. Reaching TB cases currently missing from care will be key to ending the TB epidemic.

Impact of plasma glucose and duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus on SYNTAX Score II in patients suffering from non ST-elevation myocardial infarction. KARDIOLOGIIA 2022; 62:40-48. [PMID: 35414360 DOI: 10.18087/cardio.2022.3.n1799] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/10/2021] [Accepted: 11/26/2021] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
Aim The objective was to assess the correlation of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c, and the duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with SYNTAX score (SS) II in patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).Material and methods FPG and HbA1C were measured in 398 patients presenting with NSTEMI at admission. SS II was calculated using an online calculator. Patients were stratified according to SS II (≤21.5, 21.5-30.6, and ≥30.6), defined as SS II low, mid, and high, respectively. Results 37.7 % of subjects were diabetic. Correlations of FPG (R=0.402, R2=0.162, p<0.001) and HbA1c (R=0.359, R2=0.129, p<0.001) with SS II were weak in the overall population. Duration of T2DM showed very strong correlation with SS II (R=0.827, R2=0.347). For the prediction of high SS II in the study population, FPG≥98.5 mg / dl demonstrated a sensitivity of 58 % and a specificity of 60 %, and HbA1c ≥6.05 demonstrated a sensitivity of 63 % and a specificity of 69 %. Duration of T2DM (adjusted odds ratio (OR): 1.182; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.185-2.773) and FPG (OR: 0.987; 95 % CI: 0.976-0.9959) were significantly associated with high SS II after controlling for other risk factors. Duration of T2DM (Beta=0.439) contributed strongly to variance of SS II, whereas HbA1c (Beta=0.063) contributed weakly. Conclusion Duration of T2DM is a very important risk factor for severity of coronary artery disease.

Measurement of the Groomed Jet Radius and Momentum Splitting Fraction in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:102001. Abstract
This article presents groomed jet substructure measurements in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. The soft drop grooming algorithm provides access to the hard parton splittings inside a jet by removing soft wide-angle radiation. We report the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction, z_{g}, and the (scaled) groomed jet radius, θ_{g}. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k_{T} algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4. In heavy-ion collisions, the large underlying event poses a challenge for the reconstruction of groomed jet observables, since fluctuations in the background can cause groomed parton splittings to be misidentified. By using strong grooming conditions to reduce this background, we report these observables fully corrected for detector effects and background fluctuations for the first time. A narrowing of the θ_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is seen, which provides direct evidence of the modification of the angular structure of jets in the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification of the z_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is observed. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, and provide constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms and coherence effects in the quark-gluon plasma.

Oleanolic acid-conjugated human serum albumin nanoparticles encapsulating doxorubicin as synergistic combination chemotherapy in oropharyngeal carcinoma and melanoma. Int J Pharm 2022; 614:121479. Abstract
Combination chemotherapy produces a superior therapeutic response than monotherapy in cancer. Human serum albumin and a naturally occurring cancer prophylactic/anticancer triterpenoid, oleanolic acid, were conjugated to form self-assembled nanoparticles that entrapped doxorubicin. Dox@HSA-OA NPs were physicochemically characterized for particle size, zeta potential, drug loading, entrapment efficiency, stability, release, and hemocompatibility. The Dox@HSA-OA NPs (particle size. ∼ 140 nm) showed commendable loading (14.6 %), entrapment (59.01%) of Dox. The in vitro cell uptake study using human oral squamous carcinoma (FaDu-HTB-43) and murine melanoma (B16F10) cells indicated a higher cellular association of Dox@HSA-OA NPs than free Dox. The lowest IC50 of Dox@HSA-OA NPs than Dox against both the cell lines at various time points proved the Dox/HSA-OA-mediated combination chemotherapeutic effect. Dox@HSA-OA NPs demonstrated higher apoptosis and cell cycle arrest (G2/M phase). The Dox@HSA-OA NPs-mediated Dox penetration, cell death/shrinkage were significant in FaDu-HTB-43 spheroids. Dox@HSA-OA NPs showed a better pharmacokinetic profile with increased t1/2 and Cmax than Dox. The in vivo experiment using B16F10 tumor-bearing mice showed tumor regression, DNA damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis-induction via the intrinsic pathway to a greater extent following Dox@HSA-OA NPs treatment than Dox. Therefore, the Dox@HSA-OA NPs-mediated combination therapy could be a powerful treatment strategy for solid tumors.

Joint risk prediction for hazardous use of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco among adolescents: A preliminary study using statistical and machine learning. Prev Med Rep 2022; 25:101674. Abstract
A risk prediction model for hazardous substance use among adolescents is proposed. The model predicts risk of hazardous use of alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco jointly. It uses statistical and machine learning methods for modeling of multiple outcomes. It may help identify adolescent users at elevated risk of hazardous substance use.
For some, substance use during adolescence may be a stepping stone on the way to substance use disorders in adulthood. Risk prediction models may help identify adolescent users at elevated risk for hazardous substance use. This preliminary analysis used cross-sectional data (n = 270, ages 13–18) from the baseline dataset of a randomized controlled trial intervening with adolescent alcohol and/or cannabis use. Models were developed for jointly predicting quantitative scores on three measures of hazardous substance use (Rutgers Alcohol Problems Index, Adolescent Cannabis Problem Questionnaire, and Hooked on Nicotine Checklist) based on personal risk factors using two statistical and machine learning methods: multivariate covariance generalized linear models (MCGLM) and penalized multivariate regression with a lasso penalty. The predictive accuracy of a model was evaluated using root mean squared error computed via leave-one-out cross-validation. The final proposed model was an MCGLM model. It has eleven risk factors: age, early life stress, age of first tobacco use, age of first cannabis use, lifetime use of other substances, age of first use of other substances, maternal education, parental attachment, family cigarette use, family history of hazardous alcohol use, and family history of hazardous cannabis use. Different subsets of these risk factors feature in the three outcome-specific components of this joint model. The quantitative risk estimate provided by the proposed model may help identify adolescent substance users of cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco who may be at an elevated risk of developing hazardous substance use.

Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Σ_{c}^{0,++} production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}/D^{0} and Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} are calculated in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) intervals 2<p_{T}<12 and 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Σ_{c}. The feed-down contribution to Λ_{c}^{+} production from Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} is also reported and is found to be larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Abstract
Use of ultrasound as an intensified non-destructive decontamination technique for processing graphite limits its reusability beyond a few number of decontamination cycles due to the exfoliation of graphite due to cavitation effects. The current work establishes that the use of platinum nanoparticles in the leachant reduces the erosion of graphite substrate due to cavitation. It presents an improved way of sonochemical recovery of ceria using a mixture of nitric acid, formic acid and hydrazinium nitrate in the presence of platinum nanoparticles and ionic liquid. The platinum nanoparticles catalyst in ionic liquid prevented the generation of the carbon residue due to the combined effect of denitration and reduced sonication. The presence of the catalyst showed a fivefold increase in dissolution kinetics of ceria as well as absence of graphite erosion, facilitating better chances of graphite recycling than the decontamination without the catalyst. The catalytic approach offers a better recycle strategy for graphite with reduced exfoliation and NOx generation due to denitration, making it a more sustainable decontamination process. Since ceria is used as a surrogate for plutonium oxide, the results can be extended to decontaminate such deposits clearly establishing the utility of the presented results in the nuclear industry.

Prevalence and molecular characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli isolated from dogs suffering from diarrhea in and around Kolkata. IRANIAN JOURNAL OF VETERINARY RESEARCH 2022; 23:237-246. [PMID: 36425605 PMCID: PMC9681975 DOI: 10.22099/ijvr.2022.42543.6176] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/16/2021] [Revised: 04/21/2022] [Accepted: 05/02/2022] [Indexed: 03/17/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Dogs are the favorite companion animals among humans. The close interaction between dogs and people increases the risk of antibiotic resistance spreading. Surveillance for antimicrobial resistance and the identification of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli as an indicator bacterium is an important tool for managing antimicrobial drug therapy. AIMS The present study targeted to identify and characterize ESBL-producing E. coli among dogs suffering from diarrhea in and around Kolkata. METHODS Isolation and identification of E. coli from dogs suffering from diarrhea (n=70) along with screening for the production of both ESBL and AmpC. The isolates were further characterized through antimicrobial resistance profiling, resistance genes (bla CTX-M, bla TEM, and bla SHV) screening, and phylogenetic group study. RESULTS Among the 70 isolates, 21 (30%) were confirmed ESBL producers. An antibiogram typing of ESBL-producing E. coli revealed that the majority of them were resistant to norfloxacin (85.7%) followed by tetracycline (61.90%), doxycycline (57.14%), piperacillin/tazobactam (52.38%), cotrimoxazole (47.62%), gentamicin (42.62%), amikacin (23.81%), and chloramphenicol (19.05%). Major resistance genes included bla CTX-M (100%), bla TEM (28.57%), and bla SHV (9.50%). The predominant phylogenetic groups were phylogroup A (76%) followed by phylogroup D (24%). CONCLUSION The current investigation reported a high prevalence of both ESBL and AmpC β-lactamase (AmpC) producing E. coli, co-resistance to a distinct group of antibiotics, and co-existence of different ESBL genes in dogs. Our findings highlight the importance of diagnostic antimicrobial susceptibility testing for proper antimicrobial therapy and to prevent antimicrobial resistance from spreading to humans from dogs in Kolkata and the surrounding area.

Measurement of the Cross Sections of Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} Baryons and of the Branching-Fraction Ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}) in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ_{c}^{0} baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay (Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}) and the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}) channels. The Ξ_{c}^{+} baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}) channel. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})=1.38±0.14(stat)±0.22(syst) was measured with a total uncertainty reduced by a factor of about 3 with respect to the current world average reported by the Particle Data Group. The transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence of the Ξ_{c}^{0}- and Ξ_{c}^{+}-baryon production relative to the D^{0} meson and to the Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}- and Λ_{c}^{+}-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases toward low p_{T} up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronization mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronization in electron-positron (e^{+}e^{-}) and hadronic collisions.
