Deep generative models for automated muscle segmentation in computed tomography scanning

Accurate gluteus medius (GMd) volume evaluation may aid in the analysis of muscular atrophy states and help gain an improved understanding of patient recovery via rehabilitation. However, the segmentation of muscle regions in GMd images for cubic muscle volume assessment is time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study automated GMd-region segmentation from the computed tomography (CT) images of patients diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis using deep learning and evaluated the segmentation accuracy. To this end, 5250 augmented pairs of training data were obtained from five participants, and a conditional generative adversarial network was used to identify the relationships between the image pairs. Using the preserved test datasets, the results of automatic segmentation with the trained deep learning model were compared to those of manual segmentation in terms of the dice similarity coefficient (DSC), volume similarity (VS), and shape similarity (MS). As observed, the average DSC values for automatic and manual segmentations were 0.748 and 0.812, respectively, with a significant difference (p < 0.0001); the average VS values were 0.247 and 0.203, respectively, with no significant difference (p = 0.069); and the average MS values were 1.394 and 1.156, respectively, with no significant difference (p = 0.308). The GMd volumes obtained by automatic and manual segmentation were 246.2 cm³ and 282.9 cm³, respectively. The noninferiority of the DSC obtained by automatic segmentation was verified against that obtained by manual segmentation. Accordingly, the proposed GAN-based automatic GMd-segmentation technique is confirmed to be noninferior to manual segmentation. Therefore, the findings of this research confirm that the proposed method not only reduces time and effort but also facilitates accurate assessment of the cubic muscle volume.

Spin-valley coupling in single-electron bilayer graphene quantum dots

Understanding how the electron spin is coupled to orbital degrees of freedom, such as a valley degree of freedom in solid-state systems, is central to applications in spin-based electronics and quantum computation. Recent developments in the preparation of electrostatically-confined quantum dots in gapped bilayer graphene (BLG) enable to study the low-energy single-electron spectra in BLG quantum dots, which is crucial for potential spin and spin-valley qubit operations. Here, we present the observation of the spin-valley coupling in bilayer graphene quantum dots in the single-electron regime. By making use of highly-tunable double quantum dot devices we achieve an energy resolution allowing us to resolve the lifting of the fourfold spin and valley degeneracy by a Kane-Mele type spin-orbit coupling of ≈ 60 μeV. Furthermore, we find an upper limit of a potentially disorder-induced mixing of the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$K$$\end{document}K and \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$K^{\prime}$$\end{document}K′ states below 20 μeV.

Understanding the interaction between spin and valley degrees of freedom in graphene-based quantum dots underpins their applications in electronics and quantum information. Here, the authors study the low-energy spectrum and resolve the spin-valley coupling in single-electron quantum dots in bilayer graphene.

The optical response of artificially twisted MoS[Formula: see text] bilayers

Two-dimensional layered materials offer the possibility to create artificial vertically stacked structures possessing an additional degree of freedom-the interlayer twist. We present a comprehensive optical study of artificially stacked bilayers (BLs) MoS[Formula: see text] encapsulated in hexagonal BN with interlayer twist angle ranging from 0[Formula: see text] to 60[Formula: see text] using Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopies. It is found that the strength of the interlayer coupling in the studied BLs can be estimated using the energy dependence of indirect emission versus the A[Formula: see text]-E[Formula: see text] energy separation. Due to the hybridization of electronic states in the valence band, the emission line related to the interlayer exciton is apparent in both the natural (2H) and artificial (62[Formula: see text]) MoS[Formula: see text] BLs, while it is absent in the structures with other twist angles. The interlayer coupling energy is estimated to be of about 50 meV. The effect of temperature on energies and intensities of the direct and indirect emission lines in MoS[Formula: see text] BLs is also quantified.

Tunable exciton-polaritons emerging from WS2 monolayer excitons in a photonic lattice at room temperature

Engineering non-linear hybrid light-matter states in tailored lattices is a central research strategy for the simulation of complex Hamiltonians. Excitons in atomically thin crystals are an ideal active medium for such purposes, since they couple strongly with light and bear the potential to harness giant non-linearities and interactions while presenting a simple sample-processing and room temperature operability. We demonstrate lattice polaritons, based on an open, high-quality optical cavity, with an imprinted photonic lattice strongly coupled to excitons in a WS2 monolayer. We experimentally observe the emergence of the canonical band-structure of particles in a one-dimensional lattice at room temperature, and demonstrate frequency reconfigurability over a spectral window exceeding 85 meV, as well as the systematic variation of the nearest-neighbour coupling, reflected by a tunability in the bandwidth of the p-band polaritons by 7 meV. The technology presented in this work is a critical demonstration towards reconfigurable photonic emulators operated with non-linear photonic fluids, offering a simple experimental implementation and working at ambient conditions.

Strong Interminivalley Scattering in Twisted Bilayer Graphene Revealed by High-Temperature Magneto-Oscillations

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) provides an example of a system in which the interplay of interlayer interactions and superlattice structure impacts electron transport in a variety of nontrivial ways and gives rise to a plethora of interesting effects. Understanding the mechanisms of electron scattering in TBG has, however, proven challenging, raising many questions about the origins of resistivity in this system. Here we show that TBG exhibits high-temperature magneto-oscillations originating from the scattering of charge carriers between TBG minivalleys. The amplitude of these oscillations reveals that interminivalley scattering is strong, and its characteristic timescale is comparable to that of its intraminivalley counterpart. Furthermore, by exploring the temperature dependence of these oscillations, we estimate the electron-electron collision rate in TBG and find that it exceeds that of monolayer graphene. Our study demonstrates the consequences of the relatively small size of the superlattice Brillouin zone and Fermi velocity reduction on lateral transport in TBG.

Upstream modes and antidots poison graphene quantum Hall effect

The quantum Hall effect is the seminal example of topological protection, as charge carriers are transmitted through one-dimensional edge channels where backscattering is prohibited. Graphene has made its marks as an exceptional platform to reveal new facets of this remarkable property. However, in conventional Hall bar geometries, topological protection of graphene edge channels is found regrettably less robust than in high mobility semi-conductors. Here, we explore graphene quantum Hall regime at the local scale, using a scanning gate microscope. We reveal the detrimental influence of antidots along the graphene edges, mediating backscattering towards upstream edge channels, hence triggering topological breakdown. Combined with simulations, our experimental results provide further insights into graphene quantum Hall channels vulnerability. In turn, this may ease future developments towards precise manipulation of topologically protected edge channels hosted in various types of two-dimensional crystals.

High-responsivity graphene photodetectors integrated on silicon microring resonators

Graphene integrated photonics provides several advantages over conventional Si photonics. Single layer graphene (SLG) enables fast, broadband, and energy-efficient electro-optic modulators, optical switches and photodetectors (GPDs), and is compatible with any optical waveguide. The last major barrier to SLG-based optical receivers lies in the current GPDs' low responsivity when compared to conventional PDs. Here we overcome this by integrating a photo-thermoelectric GPD with a Si microring resonator. Under critical coupling, we achieve >90% light absorption in a ~6 μm SLG channel along a Si waveguide. Cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions cause carriers in SLG to reach ~400 K for an input power ~0.6 mW, resulting in a voltage responsivity ~90 V/W, with a receiver sensitivity enabling our GPDs to operate at a 10-9 bit-error rate, on par with mature semiconductor technology, but with a natural generation of a voltage, rather than a current, thus removing the need for transimpedance amplification, with a reduction of energy-per-bit, cost, and foot-print.

Interfacial ferroelectricity by van der Waals sliding

Despite their partial ionic nature, many layered diatomic crystals avoid internal electric polarization by forming a centrosymmetric lattice at their optimal van-der-Waals stacking. Here, we report a stable ferroelectric order emerging at the interface between two naturally-grown flakes of hexagonal-boron-nitride, which are stacked together in a metastable non-centrosymmetric parallel orientation. We observe alternating domains of inverted normal polarization, caused by a lateral shift of one lattice site between the domains. Reversible polarization switching coupled to lateral sliding is achieved by scanning a biased tip above the surface. Our calculations trace the origin of the phenomenon to a subtle interplay between charge redistribution and ionic displacement, and provide intuitive insights to explore the interfacial polarization and its unique "slidetronics" switching mechanism.

Vanishing Thermal Equilibration for Hole-Conjugate Fractional Quantum Hall States in Graphene

Transport through edge channels is responsible for conduction in quantum Hall (QH) phases. Robust quantized values of charge and thermal conductances dictated by bulk topology appear when equilibration processes become dominant. We report on measurements of electrical and thermal conductances of integer and fractional QH phases, realized in hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated graphite-gated bilayer graphene devices for both electron and hole doped sides with different valley and orbital symmetries. Remarkably, for complex edges at filling factors ν=5/3 and 8/3, closely related to the paradigmatic hole-conjugate ν=2/3 phase, we find quantized thermal conductance whose values (3κ_{0}T and 4κ_{0}T, respectively where κ_{0}T is the thermal conductance quantum) are markedly inconsistent with the values dictated by topology (1κ_{0}T and 2κ_{0}T, respectively). The measured thermal conductance values remain insensitive to different symmetries, suggesting its universal nature. Our findings are supported by a theoretical analysis, which indicates that, whereas electrical equilibration at the edge is established over a finite length scale, the thermal equilibration length diverges for strong electrostatic interaction. Our results elucidate the subtle nature of crossover from coherent, mesoscopic to topology-dominated transport.

Imaging orbital ferromagnetism in a moiré Chern insulator

Electrons in moiré flat band systems can spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, giving rise to a quantized anomalous Hall effect. In this study, we use a superconducting quantum interference device to image stray magnetic fields in twisted bilayer graphene aligned to hexagonal boron nitride. We find a magnetization of several Bohr magnetons per charge carrier, demonstrating that the magnetism is primarily orbital in nature. Our measurements reveal a large change in the magnetization as the chemical potential is swept across the quantum anomalous Hall gap, consistent with the expected contribution of chiral edge states to the magnetization of an orbital Chern insulator. Mapping the spatial evolution of field-driven magnetic reversal, we find a series of reproducible micrometer-scale domains pinned to structural disorder.

Two-Dimensional Superconducting Fluctuations Associated with Charge-Density-Wave Stripes in La_{1.87}Sr_{0.13}Cu_{0.99}Fe_{0.01}O_{4}

The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La_{1.87}Sr_{0.13}Cu_{0.99}Fe_{0.01}O_{4} is known to enhance stripelike spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order and suppress the superconducting T_{c}. Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional superconducting correlations that have been argued to be the signatures of a new form of superconducting order, the so-called pair density wave (PDW) order. In addition, using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the two-dimensional superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In particular, the PDW signature first appears when the correlation length of the CDW stripe grows over eight times the lattice unit (∼8a). These results provide critical conditions for the formation of the PDW order.

Shell Filling and Trigonal Warping in Graphene Quantum Dots

Transport measurements through a few-electron circular quantum dot in bilayer graphene display bunching of the conductance resonances in groups of four, eight, and twelve. This is in accordance with the spin and valley degeneracies in bilayer graphene and an additional threefold "minivalley degeneracy" caused by trigonal warping. For small electron numbers, implying a small dot size and a small displacement field, a two-dimensional s shell and then a p shell are successively filled with four and eight electrons, respectively. For electron numbers larger than 12, as the dot size and the displacement field increase, the single-particle ground state evolves into a threefold degenerate minivalley ground state. A transition between these regimes is observed in our measurements and can be described by band-structure calculations. Measurements in the magnetic field confirm Hund's second rule for spin filling of the quantum dot levels, emphasizing the importance of exchange interaction effects.

Quantum Hall Valley Splitters and a Tunable Mach-Zehnder Interferometer in Graphene

Graphene is a very promising test bed for the field of electron quantum optics. However, a fully tunable and coherent electronic beam splitter is still missing. We report the demonstration of electronic beam splitters in graphene that couple quantum Hall edge channels having opposite valley polarizations. The electronic transmission of our beam splitters can be tuned from zero to near unity. By independently setting the beam splitters at the two corners of a graphene p-n junction to intermediate transmissions, we realize a fully tunable electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This tunability allows us to unambiguously identify the quantum interferences due to the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and to study their dependence with the beam-splitter transmission and the interferometer bias voltage. The comparison with conventional semiconductor interferometers points toward universal processes driving the quantum decoherence in those two different 2D systems, with graphene being much more robust to their effect.

Chern insulators, van Hove singularities and topological flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene exhibits intriguing quantum phase transitions triggered by enhanced electron-electron interactions when its flat bands are partially filled. However, the phases themselves and their connection to the putative non-trivial topology of the flat bands are largely unexplored. Here we report transport measurements revealing a succession of doping-induced Lifshitz transitions that are accompanied by van Hove singularities, which facilitate the emergence of correlation-induced gaps and topologically non-trivial subbands. In the presence of a magnetic field, well-quantized Hall plateaus at a filling of 1,2,3 carriers per moiré cell reveal the subband topology and signal the emergence of Chern insulators with Chern numbers, C = 3,2,1, respectively. Surprisingly, for magnetic fields exceeding 5 T we observe a van Hove singularity at a filling of 3.5, suggesting the possibility of a fractional Chern insulator. This van Hove singularity is accompanied by a crossover from low-temperature metallic, to high-temperature insulating behaviour, characteristic of entropically driven Pomeranchuk-like transitions.

Tuning electron correlation in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene using Coulomb screening

Controlling the strength of interactions is essential for studying quantum phenomena emerging in systems of correlated fermions. We introduce a device geometry whereby magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene is placed in close proximity to a Bernal bilayer graphene, separated by a 3-nanometer-thick barrier. By using charge screening from the Bernal bilayer, the strength of electron-electron Coulomb interaction within the twisted bilayer can be continuously tuned. Transport measurements show that tuning Coulomb screening has opposite effects on the insulating and superconducting states: As Coulomb interaction is weakened by screening, the insulating states become less robust, whereas the stability of superconductivity at the optimal doping is enhanced. The results provide important constraints on theoretical models for understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Prevalence and associated factors of pistol grip deformity in Japanese local residents

Pistol grip deformity (PGD) may be the main factor in femoroacetabular impingement development. This study aimed to clarify the epidemiological indices and factors related to PGD in Japanese people. This population-based cohort study included 1575 local Japanese residents. PGD, center edge angle, and joint space width were measured radiographically. We investigated the relationship between PGD and spino-pelvic parameters. Factors associated with PGD were examined using multiple logistic regression analysis, with the presence/absence of PGD as an objective variable, and sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and the presence/absence of hip pain or spino-pelvic parameters as explanatory variables. In the entire cohort, 4.9% (10.6% men, 2.1% women) had PGD on at least one side. A trend was observed between PGD and increasing age in both men and women (men: p < 0.0001, women: p = 0.0004). No relationship was observed between PGD and hip pain (risk ratio 1.0 [95% confidence interval 0.97–1.03]). Factors significantly associated with PGD were age, sex, and BMI in the multivariate model. Acquired factors may be related to PGD in Japanese people as the PGD prevalence increased with age and PGD was not significantly associated with hip pain. This study provides new insights into the etiology and clinical significance of PGD.

Enhanced tunable second harmonic generation from twistable interfaces and vertical superlattices in boron nitride homostructures

Broken symmetries induce strong even-order nonlinear optical responses in materials and at interfaces. Unlike conventional covalently bonded nonlinear crystals, van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures feature layers that can be stacked at arbitrary angles, giving complete control over the presence or lack of inversion symmetry at a crystal interface. Here, we report highly tunable second harmonic generation (SHG) from nanomechanically rotatable stacks of bulk hexagonal boron nitride (BN) crystals and introduce the term twistoptics to describe studies of optical properties in twistable vdW systems. By suppressing residual bulk effects, we observe SHG intensity modulated by a factor of more than 50, and polarization patterns determined by moiré interface symmetry. Last, we demonstrate greatly enhanced conversion efficiency in vdW vertical superlattice structures with multiple symmetry-broken interfaces. Our study paves the way for compact twistoptics architectures aimed at efficient tunable frequency conversion and demonstrates SHG as a robust probe of buried vdW interfaces.

Measurement of Conduction and Valence Bands g-Factors in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayer

The electron valley and spin degree of freedom in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides can be manipulated in optical and transport measurements performed in magnetic fields. The key parameter for determining the Zeeman splitting, namely, the separate contribution of the electron and hole g factor, is inaccessible in most measurements. Here we present an original method that gives access to the respective contribution of the conduction and valence band to the measured Zeeman splitting. It exploits the optical selection rules of exciton complexes, in particular the ones involving intervalley phonons, avoiding strong renormalization effects that compromise single particle g-factor determination in transport experiments. These studies yield a direct determination of single band g factors. We measure g_{c1}=0.86±0.1, g_{c2}=3.84±0.1 for the bottom (top) conduction bands and g_{v}=6.1±0.1 for the valence band of monolayer WSe_{2}. These measurements are helpful for quantitative interpretation of optical and transport measurements performed in magnetic fields. In addition, the measured g factors are valuable input parameters for optimizing band structure calculations of these 2D materials.

Tunnel field-effect transistors for sensitive terahertz detection

The rectification of electromagnetic waves to direct currents is a crucial process for energy harvesting, beyond-5G wireless communications, ultra-fast science, and observational astronomy. As the radiation frequency is raised to the sub-terahertz (THz) domain, ac-to-dc conversion by conventional electronics becomes challenging and requires alternative rectification protocols. Here, we address this challenge by tunnel field-effect transistors made of bilayer graphene (BLG). Taking advantage of BLG's electrically tunable band structure, we create a lateral tunnel junction and couple it to an antenna exposed to THz radiation. The incoming radiation is then down-converted by the tunnel junction nonlinearity, resulting in high responsivity (>4 kV/W) and low-noise (0.2 pW/[Formula: see text]) detection. We demonstrate how switching from intraband Ohmic to interband tunneling regime can raise detectors' responsivity by few orders of magnitude, in agreement with the developed theory. Our work demonstrates a potential application of tunnel transistors for THz detection and reveals BLG as a promising platform therefor.

Probing negatively charged and neutral excitons in MoS2/hBN and hBN/MoS2/hBN van der Waals heterostructures

High-quality van der Waals heterostructures assembled from hBN-encapsulated monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides enable observations of subtle optical and spin-valley properties whose identification was beyond the reach of structures exfoliated directly on standard SiO2/Si substrates. Here, we describe different van der Waals heterostructures based on uncapped single-layer MoS2 stacked onto hBN layers of different thicknesses and hBN-encapsulated monolayers. Depending on the doping level, they reveal the fine structure of excitonic complexes, i.e. neutral and charged excitons. In the emission spectra of a particular MoS2/hBN heterostructure without an hBN cap we resolve two trion peaks, T1 and T2, energetically split by about 10 meV, resembling the pair of singlet and triplet trion peaks (T S and T T ) in tungsten-based materials. The existence of these trion features suggests that monolayer MoS2 has a dark excitonic ground state, despite having a 'bright' single-particle arrangement of spin-polarized conduction bands. In addition, we show that the effective excitonic g-factor significantly depends on the electron concentration and reaches the lowest value of -2.47 for hBN-encapsulated structures, which reveals a nearly neutral doping regime. In the uncapped MoS2 structures, the excitonic g-factor varies from -1.15 to -1.39 depending on the thickness of the bottom hBN layer and decreases as a function of rising temperature.

Adjacent segment disease on hip joint as a complication of spinal fusion surgery including sacroiliac joint fixation

PURPOSE

Recently, the number of adult spinal deformity surgeries including sacroiliac joint fixation (SIJF) by using an S2 alar iliac screw or iliac screw has increased to avoid the distal junctional failure. However, we occasionally experienced patients who suffered from hip pain after a long instrumented spinal fusion. We hypothesized that long spinal fusion surgery including SIJF influenced the hip joint as an adjacent joint. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the association between spinal deformity surgery including SIJF and radiographic progression of hip osteoarthritis (OA).

METHODS

This study was retrospective cohort study. In total, 118 patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery at single center from January 2013 to August 2018 were included. We measured joint space width (JSW) at central space of the hip joint. We defined reduction of more than 0.5 mm/year in JSW as hip OA progression. The patients were divided into two groups depending on either a progression of hip osteoarthritis (Group P), or no progression (Group N).

RESULTS

The number of patients in Group P and Group N was 47 and 71, respectively. Factor that was statistically significant for hip OA was SIJF (p = 0.0065, odds ratio = 7.1, 95% confidence interval = 1.6-31.6). There were no other significant differences by the multiple logistic regression analysis.

CONCLUSION

This study identified spinal fixation surgery that includes SIJF as a predictor for radiographic progression of hip OA over 12 months. We should pay attention to hip joint lesions after adult spinal deformity surgery, including SIJF.

High-bandwidth, variable-resistance differential noise thermometry

We have developed Johnson noise thermometry applicable to mesoscopic devices with variable source impedance with high bandwidth for fast data acquisition. By implementing differential noise measurement and two-stage impedance matching, we demonstrate noise measurement in the frequency range of 120 MHz-250 MHz with a wide sample resistance range of 30 Ω-100 kΩ tuned by gate voltages and temperature. We employed high-frequency, single-ended low noise amplifiers maintained at a constant cryogenic temperature in order to maintain the desired low noise temperature. We have achieved thermometer calibration with temperature precision up to 650 μK measuring a 200 mK temperature modulation on a 10 K background with 30 s of averaging. Using this differential noise thermometry technique, we measured thermal conductivity on a bilayer graphene sample spanning the metallic and semiconducting regimes in a wide resistance range, and we compared it to the electrical conductivity.
