Uterine rupture as a complication of second trimester abortion using intraamniotic prostaglandin E2 and augmentation with other oxytocic agents

Two cases of ruptured uterus are presented following attempted induction of midtrimester abortion using intraamniotic prostaglandin E2 and augmentation with other oxytocic agents. With continued uterine stimulation the diagnosis of rupture may not be obvious and the diagnostic features are discussed. Patients of high parity appear to be particularly susceptible to uterine rupture during induced midtrimester abortion.

Clearance of technetium 99m-labeled sulfur colloid particles from the blood in normal dogs and in dogs with hepatic granulomata

The clearance of technetium 99m-labeled sulfur colloid particles from the blood was studied in a series of seven clinically normal dogs. The effect of recent (6 hours) injections of bacteria bacillus Calmette-Guerin or Corynebacterium parvum markedly impeded the clearance of the colloid from the blood, due to a partial blockade effect. This phenomenon was reversible. When multiple experimentally induced hepatic granulomatous lesions were present, the clearance was similarly impeded. In contrast, however, this was not a reversible event. The possible application of this technique to diagnosis was discussed.

The premature breech: trial of labor or cesarean section?

Sixty-six premature breech deliveries were studied retrospectively. Forty-eight patients were permitted a trial of labor, 47 of whom ultimately delivered vaginally. Eighteen patients underwent cesarean section as soon as possible after their arrival at the delivery suite. When Apgar scores, perinatal mortality rates, cord prolapse, and entrapment of the aftercoming head are considered, cesarean section is probably the safer course of management for the patient with a footling breech infant, especially when the infant weighs 1500 g or less. However, the data indicate that a trial of labor can be safely undertaken in the presence of a premature frank or complete breech presentation.

Regional intralymphatic infusion (ILI) of irradiated tumor cells with evidence of distant effects

A case of canine lymphoma with radiographically-documented involvement of the para-aortic nodes is reported. Intralymphatic infusions (ILI) of cultured irradiated autochthonous tumor cells to remote lymph node bearing areas were associated with a dramatic initial shrinkage of the para-aortic lymphadenopathies. Three ILI timing schedules were used consecutively during a course of 10 treatments, allowing a comparison of responses in the same animal. The reported case suggests that a normal lymph node can be effectively "stimulated" by the same agent approximately every 3 weeks. A possible schedule for intralymphatic infusion is proposed for further investigation.
