Abstract
Engineered Escherichia coli has recently been applied to produce 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from glucose. A metabolic intermediate in the production pathway, glycerol, is partially secreted into the extracellular of E. coli through a glycerol facilitator encoded by glpF, and this secretion consequently decreases 1,3-PDO production. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether disrupting the glpF gene would improve 1,3-PDO production in E. coli. The intracellular glycerol concentration in a glpF-disruptant was 7·5 times higher than in a non-disruptant. The glpF-disrupted and non-disrupted E. coli strains produced 0·26 and 0·09 g l-1 of 1,3-PDO, respectively, from 1% glucose after 72 h of cultivation. The specific growth rate (μ) and the 1,3-PDO yield from glucose (YP/S ) in the disruptant were higher than those in the non-disruptant (ΔglpF, μ = 0·08 ± 0·00 h-1 , YP/S = 0·06 mol mol-glucose-1 ; BW25113, μ = 0·06 ± 0·00 h-1 , YP/S = 0·02 mol mol-glucose-1 ). Disruption of the glpF gene decreased the production of the by-product, acetic acid. These results indicated that disruption of glpF increased the intracellular concentration of glycerol and consequently increased 1,3-PDO production in E. coli.

Abstract
AIM Endoscopic treatment for rectal cancer, such as endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection, causes inflammation, oedema and fibrosis in the surrounding tissue. However, little is known about the effect of these endoscopic therapies on salvage laparoscopic rectal surgery. The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to analyse the effect of preceding endoscopic treatment on the outcomes of laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer. METHOD We analysed 53 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer with clinical Tis or T1 at our department between May 2011 and June 2019. Data from 30 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery after preceding endoscopic treatment (Group E + S) were compared with those of 23 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery alone (Group S). RESULTS There was no significant difference between the groups with respect to preoperative details. The mean operative time tended to be longer in Group E + S, and the volume of intra-operative blood loss was greater in Group E + S than in Group S (median 63 ml vs 10 ml, P = 0.049). There were no significant differences between the groups in other surgical parameters or oncological outcomes. CONCLUSION Laparoscopic surgery after endoscopic treatment for rectal cancer may be difficult due to an increased risk of intra-operative bleeding. Long-term prognosis after surgery was not affected by preceding endoscopic treatment in rectal cancer.

Abstract
Despite extensive studies on the distinctive properties of water confined in a nanospace, the underlying mechanism and significance of the lengthscale involved in the confinement effects are still subjects of controversy. The dielectric constant and the refractive index in particular are key parameters in modeling and understanding nanoconfined water, yet experimental evidence is lacking. We report the measurement of the refractive indices of water in 10-100 nm spaces by exploiting the confinement of water and localized surface plasmons in a physicochemically well-defined nanocavity. The results revealed significantly low values and the scaling behavior of the out-of-plane refractive index n⊥ of confined water. They are attributed to the polarization suppression at the interfaces and the long-range correlation in electronic polarization facilitated by the strengthened H-bonding network. Using the refractive index as a sensing probe, we also observed anomalous stability of water structures over a wide range of temperature. Our measurement results provide essential feedback information for benchmarking water models and molecular interactions under nanoconfinement. This study also opens up a new methodology of using plasmon resonance in characterizing nanoconfined molecules and chemical reactions, and thus gives us fundamental insight into confinement effects.

Abstract
The emergence of the vortex beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) has provided intriguing possibilities to induce optical transitions beyond the framework of the electric dipole interaction. The uniqueness stems from the OAM transfer from light to material, as demonstrated in electronic transitions in atomic systems. In this study, we report on the OAM transfer to electrons in solid-state systems, which has been elusive to date. Using metamaterials (periodically textured metallic disks), we show that multipolar modes of the surface electromagnetic excitations (so-called spoof localized surface plasmons) are selectively induced by the terahertz vortex beam. Our results reveal selection rules governed by the conservation of the total angular momentum, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. The efficient transfer of light's OAM to elementary excitations in solid-state systems at room temperature opens up new possibilities of OAM manipulation.

Abstract
Because internal transfers can play a key role in radiocaesium persistence in trees, a reliable representation of radiocaesium recycling between tree organs in forest models is important for long-term simulations after radioactive fallout in Chernobyl and Fukushima. We developed an upgraded 2.0 version of the initial TRIPS ("Transfer of Radionuclides In Perennial vegetation System") model involving explicit differentiation between tree organs (i.e., foliage, branches, stemwood and bark). The quality of TRIPS 2.0 was evaluated by testing model outputs against independent datasets for pine stands in Belarus and Ukraine. Scenarios involving "hot particle" deposits in forest remained challenging, but in all other scenarios generally positive verification results for soil and tree compartments indicated that the TRIPS 2.0 model adequately combines the major relevant processes. Interestingly, the response of stemwood contamination to changes in radiocaesium availability in soil, as determined by soil conditions, was shown to be more sensitive than for other tree compartments. We recommend the conceptual tree discretization of TRIPS 2.0 for generic forest modeling for two reasons: 1) regardless of different soil conditions, there was concurrent good agreement between simulations and data for individual tree compartments (foliage, branches, stemwood and bark), and 2) the measurements necessary to estimate internal tree transfers are easily accessible to usual field monitoring in forest biogeochemistry (for details, see Goor, F. & Thiry, Y., 2004. Abstract
Over the past three decades, considerable effort has been dedicated to quantifying the pace of ageing yet identifying the most essential metrics of ageing remains challenging due to lack of comprehensive measurements and heterogeneity of the ageing processes. Most of the previously proposed metrics of ageing have been emerged from cross-sectional associations with chronological age and predictive accuracy of mortality, thus lacking a conceptual model of functional or phenotypic domains. Further, such models may be biased by selective attrition and are unable to address underlying biological constructs contributing to functional markers of age-related decline. Using longitudinal data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), we propose a conceptual framework to identify metrics of ageing that may capture the hierarchical and temporal relationships between functional ageing, phenotypic ageing and biological ageing based on four hypothesized domains: body composition, energy regulation, homeostatic mechanisms and neurodegeneration/neuroplasticity. We explored the longitudinal trajectories of key variables within these phenotypes using linear mixed-effects models and more than 10 years of data. Understanding the longitudinal trajectories across these domains in the BLSA provides a reference for researchers, informs future refinement of the phenotypic ageing framework and establishes a solid foundation for future models of biological ageing.

Abstract
AIM Recently, the accessory middle colic artery (AMCA) has been recognized as the vessel that supplies blood to the splenic flexure. However, the positional relationship between the AMCA and inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) has not been evaluated. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the anatomy of the AMCA and the splenic flexure vein (SFV). METHOD Two hundred and five patients with colorectal cancer who underwent enhanced CT preoperatively were enrolled in the present study. The locations of the AMCA and IMV were evaluated, focusing on the positional relationship between the vessels and pancreas - below the pancreas or to the dorsal side of the pancreas. RESULTS The AMCA was observed in 74 (36.1%) patients whereas the SFV was found in 177 (86.3%) patients. The left colic artery (LCA) was the major artery accompanying the SFV in 87 (42.4%) of patients. The AMCA accompanied the SFV in 65 (32.7%) patients. In 15 (7.8%) patients, no artery accompanied the SFV. The origin of the AMCA was located on the dorsal side of the pancreas in 15 (20.3%) of these 74 patients. Similarly, the destination of the IMV was located on the dorsal side of the pancreas in 65 (31.7%) of patients. CONCLUSION The SFV was observed in most patients, and the LCA or AMCA was the common accompanying artery. In some patients these vessels were located on the dorsal side of the pancreas and not below it. Preoperative evaluation of this anatomy may be beneficial for lymph node dissection during left-sided hemicolectomy.

Abstract
The excitation functions for quasielastic scattering of ^{22}Ne+^{248}Cm, ^{26}Mg+^{248}Cm, and ^{48}Ca+^{238}U are measured using a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The quasielastic barrier distributions are extracted for these systems and are compared with coupled-channel calculations. The results indicate that the barrier distribution is affected dominantly by deformation of the actinide target nuclei, but also by vibrational or rotational excitations of the projectile nuclei, as well as neutron transfer processes before capture. From a comparison between the experimental barrier distributions and the evaporation residue cross sections for Sg (Z=106), Hs (108), Cn (112), and Lv (116), it is suggested that the hot fusion reactions take advantage of a compact collision, where the projectile approaches along the short axis of a prolately deformed nucleus. A new method is proposed to estimate the optimum incident energy to synthesize unknown superheavy nuclei using the barrier distribution.

Abstract
AIM Pelvic lymphocele is a common complication that develops after pelvic lymph node dissection. The incidence of pelvic lymphocele formation has been reported to be 10.5-51% after gynaecological or urological procedures. However, no evidence has been reported thus far with regard to the development of pelvic lymphocele following lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPND) for low rectal cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of and risk factors for lymphocele formation after LPND for low rectal cancer and to examine its clinical management. METHOD We retrospectively analysed the incidence of and risk factors for pelvic lymphocele formation after LPND for rectal cancer in our hospital between January 2012 and December 2017. We also compared the size of the lymphocele between asymptomatic and symptomatic patients by using CT volumetry and examined its clinical management. RESULTS A total of 30 out of 98 patients (30.8%) developed pelvic lymphocele after rectal LPND. The number of resected nodes was significantly higher in patients with a pelvic lymphocele (P < 0.01). The median volume was significantly higher in patients with symptomatic pelvic lymphocele (P = 0.011). Among the nine symptomatic patients, two underwent CT-guided drainage, one underwent transurethral ureteral stent placement and one underwent laparoscopic marsupialization. CONCLUSION It is essential to keep in mind the possibility of pelvic lymphocele formation during follow-up of patients who undergo LPND, and to consider an appropriate treatment when these patients are symptomatic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the dietary patterns among community-dwelling Japanese older adults and to explore the association between these patterns and sarcopenia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Kashiwa city, Chiba prefecture, Japan. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling older adults (n = 1241) aged 65 years and over who were not eligible for long-term care. MEASUREMENTS Dietary intake was assessed using the brief self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ). Dietary patterns were identified using both principal component analysis and the score on the Japanese diet comprising soybeans and soybean products, fish, vegetables, pickles, mushroom, seaweeds, and fruits. Sarcopenia was defined by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed with sarcopenia status as the dependent variable after adjusting for economic status, living alone status, BMI, energy intake, multimorbidity, and physical activity. RESULTS Participants' mean age was 74.6 years, and 52.1% were male. According to AWGS criteria, 5.1% had sarcopenia. Three dietary patterns were identified from the principal component analysis. Dietary pattern 1 (DP1), showed high loadings for fish, tofu, vegetables, and fruits which are similar to the side dishes in a typical Japanese diet. Dietary pattern 2 (DP2) had high factor loadings for fish, rice, and miso soup which are main dishes in a typical Japanese diet. Dietary pattern 3 (DP3) had a high factor loading for noodles. Men with the lowest tertile of DP1 score had a higher likelihood of being sarcopenic (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 3.67, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20-11.2). Women with the lowest tertile of DP2 score had a moderate likelihood of being sarcopenic (AOR 2.71, 95%CI 0.99-7.46). Low adherence to Japanese dietary pattern was associated with prevalence of sarcopenia in both genders. CONCLUSION Adherence to a dietary pattern high in foods characteristic of a Japanese diet including fish, soybean products, vegetables, and fruits was associated with low prevalence of sarcopenia in both genders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The metastatic involvement of regional lymph nodes is the most important prognostic factor for overall survival of skin cancer patients. The sonographic technique of freehand real-time tissue elastography (RTE), which displays tissue rigidity as a colour overlay of the tissue image, was developed. OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to evaluate the benefit of RTE for detecting lymph node metastases of skin cancer non-invasively before operation. METHODS We first selected lymph nodes of skin cancer patients which had already been diagnosed by biopsy as being reactive or metastatic, and then retrospectively collected images of RTE and B-mode and colour Doppler ultrasound on those lymph nodes performed preoperatively. Twenty-one lymph nodes from 12 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 23 lymph nodes from 14 patients with malignant melanoma (MM) and 14 lymph nodes from six patients with extramammary Paget disease (Paget) were investigated. Elastographic images were assessed on a scale of one to four according to the percentage of high elasticity (hard) area (HEA) in the lymph node. RESULTS In all three skin cancers, lymph nodes evaluated as grade 3 or 4 by RTE were metastatic. All lymph nodes evaluated as grade 1 or 2 by RTE were reactive in SCC, whereas some lymph nodes evaluated as grade 1 or 2 were metastatic in MM and Paget. CONCLUSION Real-time tissue elastography may aid in distinguishing reactive lymph nodes from metastatic ones especially in SCC.

Abstract
Objectives Using a simple classification method, we aimed to estimate the collapse rate due to osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in order to develop treatment guidelines for joint-preserving surgeries. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 505 hips from 310 patients (141 men, 169 women; mean age 45.5 years (sd 14.9; 15 to 86)) diagnosed with ONFH and classified them using the Japanese Investigation Committee (JIC) classification. The JIC system includes four visualized types based on the location and size of osteonecrotic lesions on weightbearing surfaces (types A, B, C1, and C2) and the stage of ONFH. The collapse rate due to ONFH was calculated using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, with radiological collapse/arthroplasty as endpoints. Results Bilateral cases accounted for 390 hips, while unilateral cases accounted for 115. According to the JIC types, 21 hips were type A, 34 were type B, 173 were type C1, and 277 were type C2. At initial diagnosis, 238/505 hips (47.0%) had already collapsed. Further, the cumulative survival rate was analyzed in 212 precollapsed hips, and the two-year and five-year collapse rates were found to be 0% and 0%, 7.9% and 7.9%, 23.2% and 36.6%, and 57.8% and 84.8% for types A, B, C1, and C2, respectively. Conclusion Type A ONFH needs no further treatment, but precollapse type C2 ONFH warrants immediate treatment with joint-preserving surgery. Considering the high collapse rate, our study results justify the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in asymptomatic patients with type C2 ONFH. Cite this article: Y. Kuroda, T. Abstract
Parabens have been widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages. Commonly, methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparaben are used independently or in combination to maintain the quality of industrial products, and they are considered to have low toxicity. However, recent evidence has suggested that parabens are toxic in mammalian cells, and parabens have been associated with allergic-contact dermatitis, breast cancer and changes in testosterone levels. Sulforaphane, a cruciferous vegetable-derived isothiocyanate, was effective in decreasing the growth inhibitory concentrations of ethyl-, propyl-, butyl- and methylparaben in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The sulforaphane-enhanced fungicidal effects of methylparaben were deemed to be caused by drastic cell membrane damage and the leakage of internal substances, such as nucleotides, from S. cerevisiae cells. Moreover sulforaphane markedly decreased the minimum concentration of methyl- and ethylparaben required to inhibit the growth of various microbes, such as the pathogenic yeast that causes severe mycosis, Candida albicans; the filamentous fungi Aspergillus niger; and the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli. Enhanced antimicrobial activity from the beneficial components of edible plants may increase paraben efficacy at low concentrations and minimize preservative-induced side effects in consumers. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Sulforaphane, a natural and beneficial cruciferous vegetable-derived isothiocyanate, increased the ability of parabens to disrupt fungal cell membranes. Paraben-containing products have been reported to cause allergic contact dermatitis and drug hypersensitivity; therefore, methods to preserve organic products that may reduce the concentrations of parabens are both timely and necessary. In this study, we found that the combined antimicrobial effects of sulforaphane and parabens had the potential to reduce the paraben concentration needed to preserve organic products, thereby indicating that paraben toxicity may be reduced without affecting its activity as a preservative.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Eating alone is related to depression, nutritional risk, and mortality. These effects are also influenced by living status. However, little is known about the relationship between eating alone despite living with family and frailty. This study explores the relationship of eating alone and living status with frailty in community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Kashiwa city, Chiba prefecture, Japan; randomly selected community-dwelling older adults (aged 65 years and over). MEASUREMENTS Eating status was assessed by the question, "Do you eat meals with anyone, at least once a day: yes or no?" Frailty was defined by Kihon Checklist (KCL) score 8 or over. Domains of frailty were divided into instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), physical strength, nutrition, eating, socialization, memory, and mood, based on KCL categories. Binary logistic regression analysis was used, adjusting for age, years of education, chronic diseases, number of teeth and cognitive function. RESULTS Among the total of 1,914 participants, 49.8% were male, and the overall mean age was 72.9 ± 5.5 years. Of all participants, 56 (5.9%) of men and 112 (11.7%) of women were frail. Older adults who ate alone despite living with others were more likely to be frail (OR 2.49, 95%CI 1.1-5.5 for men and OR 2.16, 95%CI 1.0-4.5 for women). Of particular note, eating and living status were associated with lower physical strength and mood in men, whereas in women these statuses were associated with lower scores for IADL, socialization, memory, and mood. CONCLUSIONS Eating alone despite living with others was associated with high frailty in both genders; however, the pathways were different between genders. These results might help yield a simple, fundamental intervention approach to multifaceted frailty, reflecting gender and associated high-risk domains.

Abstract
Background
Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction and heart failure (HF) in patients with lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) is associated with an increased risk for adverse events. However, relationship between long-term outcome in patient with LEAD and LV diastolic dysfunction remains unclear.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of LV diastolic dysfunction on long-term outcome in patients with LEAD.
Methods
Two hundred patients (male 66%, mean age 76±9 years) with preserved LV systolic function assessed by echocardiography (ejection fraction ≥50%) were enrolled from a single-center database between January 2013 to May 2015. Baseline LEAD was identified by ABI <0.9 or history of lower extremity revascularization. Diagnosis of LV diastolic dysfunction was based on the ASE/EACVI guidelines. The 3-year cumulative incidence of primary endpoint compared between LEAD patients with LV diastolic dysfunction than those without. The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke and hospitalization for HF during 3 years follow-up. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine whether LV diastolic dysfunction was independently associated with the primary endpoint.
Results
LV diastolic dysfunction was identified in 31%. The mean observation period was 32±21 months. The primary endpoint occurred more frequently in patients with LV diastolic dysfunction than those without at 3 years (30% vs 16%, P=0.02). There were no significant differences between 2 groups in the myocardial infarction (3% vs 3%, P=0.73) and stroke (3% vs 3%, P=0.55). Cardiovascular death (19% vs 7%, P=0.01) and hospitalization for HF (19% vs 7%, P=0.01) were significantly higher in patients with LV diastolic dysfunction. In multivariate analysis, LV diastolic dysfunction was an independent predictor for primary endpoint (HR=2.28, 95% CI 1.10–4.73, P=0.02) (Table)
