Long-Term Intrathecal Analgesia With a Wireless Analgesia Pump System in the Home Care of Patients With Advanced Cancer

BACKGROUND

Intrathecal analgesia is more effective than conservative delivery methods such as drugs administered orally or intravenously. Programmable devices such as Medtronic's SynchroMed systems have often been applied for long-term intrathecal analgesia. However, the totally implanted systems are very expensive in China. Considering cost-effectiveness, a reliable transmission protocol for a ZigBee-Based wireless analgesia pump system was used for long-term intrathecal analgesia in the home care of patients.

METHODS

We retrospectively investigated the efficacy, side effects, and complications of long-term intrathecal analgesia in the home care of patients via the wireless analgesia pump system. Follow-up visits occurred monthly for the initial 3 months after implantation and then every 3 months until patient death, withdrawal from the study, or removal of the device by a designated staff. At each follow-up visit, daily average pain score, pain frequency, satisfaction level, Spitzer Quality of Life Index, and side effects for every patient were recorded.

RESULTS

Pain intensity and frequency were significantly decreased by intrathecal analgesia via a wireless analgesia pump system. There were no significant differences in the satisfaction levels between hospitalization and each follow-up visit. The Spitzer Quality of Life Indexes were improved compared with patients who were hospitalized. No serious side effects were observed in this study.

CONCLUSION

Intrathecal analgesia is an effective and safe method for control of refractory cancer pain, and wireless analgesia pump systems can be safely and effectively used for long-term intrathecal analgesia management in the home care of patients with advanced cancer.

[Transoral endoscopic minimally invasive surgery for hypopharyngeal postcricoid and upper esophageal lesions]

Objective:To describe the therapeutic effect of transoral endoscopic minimally invasive surgery for hypopharyngeal postcricoidarea and upper esophageal lesions. Method:Transoral endoscopic minimally invastive surgery was carried out in fifteen patients.There were 7 patients with primary tumors on the postcricoid area, including three squamous cell carcinoma（2 cases T2N0M0，1 case T2N2cM0），two cavernous hemangioma, one giant fibrovascular polyp and one recurrent lipofibroma. The transoral endoscopic tumors resection en bloc was performed in all of them. Adjuvant postoperative radiation therapy was applied in cases of cancer, and bilateral neck dissections was performed in the T2N2cM0 case; There were other eight patients with upper esophageal lesions , seven cases dysphagia was caused by stroke and one case was Zenker diverticulum, treated by endoscopic cricopharyngeal myotomy ordiverticulotomy. Result:The en bloc resection endoscopically was achieved in all of patients with tumors on the postcricoid area. All surgical resection margins were negative.The two cases of postcricoid cancer and four benign tumor were followed up 16-30 months and 2-12 months respectively, and all of the cases were not local recurrence. A recent patient with postcricoid cancer had not finished postoperative adjuvant radiation therapy. The endoscopic cricopharyngeal myotomy was effective in 4 out of 7 patients,nasogastric feeding was no longer required.Significant improvement occurred in Zenker diverticulotomy patient, due to the return of physiological deglutition, and Barium swallow study showing disappearance of the diverticulum after one month.The effects of minimally invasive threatment were satisfactory,such as not need tracheotomy and early oral feeding, shorter hospital stay and less postoperative complications. Conclusion:Transoral endoscopic surgery is minimally invastive, safe and effective treatment alternative for some hypopharyngeal postcricoid area and upper esophageal lesions.

Decreased expression of tumor suppressive miR-874 and its clinical significance in human osteosarcoma

Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRs) is associated with cancer development and progression and aberrant expression of miR-874 have been found in some types of cancer. However, the expression and function of miR-874 in osteosarcoma remain unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of miR-874 in osteosarcoma tumorigenesis and development. The expression level of miR-874 was quantified by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in human osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues. Using a miR-874 mimic, cell proliferation and migration assays were performed in an osteosarcoma cell line and tumorigenicity was observed in vivo in order to determine the effects of miR-874 in osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues. MiR-874 was significantly downregulated in osteosarcoma cell lines and clinical specimens. Decreased miR-874 expression was significantly associated with large tumor size, distant metastasis, and advanced clinical stage, and was an independent predictor of poor survival. Overexpression of miR-874 inhibited cell proliferation, invasion and migration in vitro, promoted cell apoptosis in vitro, and suppressed tumorigenicity in vivo. These findings indicate that miR-874 may act as a tumor suppressor in osteosarcoma and could serve as a novel therapeutic agent for miR-based therapy.

Correlation between expression and significance of δ-catenin, CD31, and VEGF of non-small cell lung cancer

We analyzed the expression and clinical significance of δ-catenin in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and investigated prognosis using human lung cancer samples. Eighty-nine NSCLC patients underwent operation between January and March 2009. There were 53 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 31 adenocarcinoma, and 5 large cell carcinoma. δ-Catenin in NSCLC patients was detected by immunohistochemistry and analyzed in combination with the clinicopathological characteristics of lung cancer. The relationship between δ-catenin and CD31, D2-40, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was compared by immunohistochemistry and the χ(2) test. δ-Catenin appeared in the cytoplasm of adjacent bronchial epithelial cells, indicating negative expression. Positive δ-catenin expression in the cytoplasm of lung cancer tissues was 66.67% (52/78), which was significantly higher than in normal lung tissues. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis suggested that the mean survival time of patients with δ-catenin-positive expression was significantly shorter than in those with negative expression, indicating that positive expression was closely related to poor prognosis of NSCLC. δ-Catenin was highly expressed in NSCLC mainly in the cytoplasm of lung cancer tissues. δ-Catenin-positive expression may be related to poor prognosis of NSCLC. High δ-catenin expression in NSCLC was positively correlated with high CD31 and VEGF expression, but not correlated with D2-40, suggesting that δ-catenin may be related to angiogenesis and not lymphangiogenesis.

Cloning and transformation of INDUCER of CBF EXPRESSION1 (ICE1) in tomato

The tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum Mill.) is sensitive to cold, and low field temperatures can result in shortened growth periods and decreased crop yield. Transcription of CRT/DRE-binding factor (CBF) is regulated by INDUCER of CBF EXPRESSION1 (ICE1). CBF activates many downstream genes that confer cold tolerance on plants. ICE1 has been used in genetic engineering to improve cold-resistance in several plant species. Here, ICE1 in a plant expression vector was used to transform a tissue-cultured rhubarb tomato variety using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The transgenic and control plants were compared at 4°C for 0, 24, and 72 h. We measured leaf physiological indicators related to cold resistance, including malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline (Pro) contents, and peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities. At 72 h, the MDA content in transgenic plants was significantly lower than in control plants, indicating a lower membrane lipid injury. The Pro contents and the CAT and POD activities in the transgenic plants increased significantly compared with those of the control plants. For Pro, the increase continued over the prolonged stress exposure, while CAT and POD activities reached peak levels at 24 h. These results are consistent with the roles of Pro, CAT, and POD in defending the integrity of plant cells. Our study not only improves the cold resistance of tomato, but also provides the foundation for further research on the role of ICE1 as a transcription factor in plant cold resistance.

Postoperative continuous wound infusion of ropivacaine has comparable analgesic effects and fewer complications as compared to traditional patient-controlled analgesia with sufentanil in patients undergoing non-cardiac thoracotomy

OBJECTIVE

To compare the postoperative analgesic effects of continuous wound infusion of ropivacaine with traditional patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with sufentanil after non-cardiac thoracotomy.

METHODS

One hundred and twenty adult patients undergoing open thoracotomy were recruited into this assessor-blinded, randomized study. Patients were randomly assigned to receive analgesia through a wound catheter placed below the fascia and connected to a 2 ml/h ropivacaine 0.5% (RWI group) or sufentanil PCA (SPCA group). Analgesia continued for 48 h. Visual analogue scores (VAS) at rest and movement, Ramsay scores and adverse effects were recorded at 2, 8, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after surgery. Three months after discharge, patient's satisfaction, residual pain and surgical wound complications were assessed.

RESULTS

General characteristics of patients were comparable between two groups. There were no statistical differences in the VAS scores and postoperative pethidine consumption between two groups (P > 0.05). However, when compared with SPCA group, the incidences of drowsiness, dizziness and respiratory depression, ICU stay and hospital expenditure reduced significantly in RWI group (P < 0.05). Patients' satisfaction with pain management was also improved markedly in RWI group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Continuous wound infusion with ropivacaine is effective for postoperative analgesia and has comparable effects to traditional PCA with sufentanil. Furthermore, this therapy may also reduce the incidences of drowsiness, dizziness, respiratory depression and decrease the ICU stay and hospital expenditure.

[Impact of morphine on the reproductivity of male rats]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the effect of morphine on male reproductive ability and its mechanisms in the rat model of morphine tolerance.

METHODS

Twenty male SD rats were equally randomized to groups I (control) and II (morphine tolerance). On the 1st day, the basic paw withdrawal thermal latency (PWTL) was obtained from all the rats followed by subcutaneous injection of morphine at 10 mg/kg and then calculation of the percentage of the maximal possible effect (MPE) at 30 min after administration. On the 2nd day, the rats of group I were injected subcutaneously with saline and those of group I with morphine at 10 mg/kg bid for 7 days. Then all the rats were killed after behavioral tests and their testes and epididymides harvested for sperm counting and determina- tion of the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 by immunohistochemistry.

RESULTS

On the 1st day, no obvious differences were ob- served between the two groups in the basic PWTL or the percentage of MPE. On the 7th day, the percentage of MPE was significantly decreased in group II as compared with group I (P < 0.05), while the basic PWTL showed no marked difference between the two groups. Group II also exhibited a significantly reduced epididymal perm count (P < 0.05) and remarkably upregulated expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 in comparison with group I.

CONCLUSION

Morphine might increase testicular cell apoptosis and reduce sperm concentration by upregulating the expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 in the rat model of morphine tolerance.

Pre-administration of curcumin prevents neonatal sevoflurane exposure-induced neurobehavioral abnormalities in mice

Sevoflurane, a commonly used inhaled anesthetic, can induce neuronal apoptosis in the developing rodent brain and correlate with functional neurological impairment later in life. However, the mechanisms underlying these deleterious effects of sevoflurane remain unclear and no effective treatment is currently available. Herein, the authors investigated whether curcumin can prevent the sevoflurane anesthesia-induced cognitive impairment in mice. Six-day-old C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 3% sevoflurane 2h daily for 3 consecutive days and were treated with curcumin at the dose of 20 mg/kg or vehicle 30 min before the sevoflurane anesthesia from postnatal days 6 (P6) to P8. Cognitive functions were evaluated by open field, Morris water maze, and fear conditioning tests on P61, P63-69, and P77-78, respectively. In another separate experiment, mice were killed on day P8 or P78, and the brain tissues were harvested and then subjected to biochemistry studies. Our results showed that repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposure led to significant cognitive impairment later in life, which was associated with increased neuronal apoptosis, neuroinflammation, oxidative nitrosative stress, and decreased memory related proteins. By contrast, pre-administration of curcumin ameliorated early neuronal apoptosis, neuroinflammation, oxidative nitrosative stress, memory related proteins, and later cognitive dysfunction. In conclusion, our data suggested that curcumin pre-administration can prevent the sevoflurane exposure-induced cognitive impairment later in life, which may be partly attributed to its ability to attenuate the neural apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative nitrosative stress in mouse brain.

Effects of winter cover crops straws incorporation on CH4 and N2O emission from double-cropping paddy fields in southern China

Residue management in cropping systems is believed to improve soil quality. However, the effects of residue management on methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from paddy field in Southern China have not been well researched. The emissions of CH₄ and N₂O were investigated in double cropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) systems with straw returning of different winter cover crops by using the static chamber-gas chromatography technique. A randomized block experiment with three replications was established in 2004 in Hunan Province, China, including rice–rice–ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) (Ry-R-R), rice–rice–Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) (Mv-R-R) and rice–rice with winter fallow (Fa-R-R). The results showed that straw returning of winter crops significantly increased the CH₄ emission during both rice growing seasons when compared with Fa-R-R. Ry-R-R plots had the largest CH₄ emissions during the early rice growing season with 14.235 and 15.906 g m⁻² in 2012 and 2013, respectively, when Ry-R-R plots had the largest CH₄ emission during the later rice growing season with 35.673 and 38.606 g m⁻² in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The Ry-R-R and Mv-R-R also had larger N₂O emissions than Fa-R-R in both rice seasons. When compared to Fa-R-R, total N₂O emissions in the early rice growing season were increased by 0.05 g m⁻² in Ry-R-R and 0.063 g m⁻² in Mv-R-R in 2012, and by 0.058 g m⁻² in Ry-R-R and 0.068 g m⁻² in Mv-R-R in 2013, respectively. Similar result were obtained in the late rice growing season, and the total N₂O emissions were increased by 0.104 g m⁻² in Ry-R-R and 0.073 g m⁻² in Mv-R-R in 2012, and by 0.108 g m⁻² in Ry-R-R and 0.076 g m⁻² in Mv-R-R in 2013, respectively. The global warming potentials (GWPs) from paddy fields were ranked as Ry-R-R>Mv-R-R>Fa-R-R. As a result, straw returning of winter cover crops has significant effects on increase of CH₄ and N₂O emission from paddy field in double cropping rice system.

Association between perioperative blood transfusion and early postoperative cognitive dysfunction in aged patients following total hip replacement surgery

INTRODUCTION

Accumulating evidence suggests that enhanced inflammatory responses contribute to the pathogenesis of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). Blood transfusion can trigger an enhancement of acute inflammatory responses. Therefore, we hypothesized that perioperative blood transfusion is associated with a higher risk of POCD in aged patients following total hip replacement surgery.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patients older than 65 years undergoing elective total hip replacement surgery were enrolled from October 2011 to December 2012. Neurocognitive tests were evaluated at baseline and at 7 d after surgery by a Mini-Mental State Test. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors associated with POCD.

RESULTS

Fifty-six patients (27.3%) developed POCD 7 d postoperatively. Patients who developed POCD were older, had a lower education level and preoperative hemoglobin concentration, had more blood loss, and had a lower body weight (p < 0.05). Patients with POCD were more likely to receive red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion (51.8% versus 31.5%; p < 0.05). A multivariable logistic regression model identified older age, lower education level, and perioperative blood transfusion of more than 3 units as independent risk factors for POCD 7 d postoperatively.

CONCLUSION

Our data suggested that perioperative blood transfusion of more than 3 units of RBCs is an independent risk factor for POCD in aged patients following total hip replacement surgery.

Endomorphins and ohmefentanyl in the inhibition of immunosuppressant function in rat peritoneal macrophages: An experimental in vitro study

BACKGROUND

The potential immunosuppressant effects of opioids might have clinical implications. The effects of endomorphins (EMs) and ohmefentanyl (OMF) on cultured rat peritoneal macrophages remain unclear.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the immunosuppressant effects of EMs and OMF on cultured rat peritoneal macrophages in vitro.

METHODS

Purified rat peritoneal macrophages, from healthy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, were cultured with EM-1 (EM-1 group), EM-2 (EM-2 group), OMF (OMF group), and saline (saline group). We measured the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-β in supernatant when macrophages were cultured with 10(-6) mol/L of EM-1, EM-2, OMF, or saline for 0, 6, 12, and 24 hours (time-effect relationship) or with 10(-10), 10(-9), 10(-8), 10(-7), and 10(-6) mol/L of these substances for 24 hours (concentration-effect relationship). We also determined the phagocytic and bactericidal activities of macrophages using isotope markers when macrophages were cultured with 10(-6) mol/L of EM-1, EM-2, OMF, or saline for 24 hours.

RESULTS

Compared with the saline group, TNF-α concentration decreased significantly in the OMF, EM-2, and EM-1 groups at 12 hours (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01, respectively) and at 24 hours (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, and P < 0.01, respectively). Compared with the saline group, IL-1β concentration decreased signifcantly in the OMF, EM-2, and EM-1 groups at 12 hours (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01, respectively) and at 24 hours (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, and P < 0.01, respectively). Decreased TNF-α and IL-1β concentrations were observed in the supernatant at 24 hours when cultured with 10(-8), 10(-7), and 10(-6) mol/L in the OMF and EM-2 groups (all, P < 0.05) and in the EM-1 group (all, P < 0.01). Compared with the saline group, macrophage phagocytic activity (all, P < 0.05) and macrophage bactericidal activity (all, P < 0.01) were significantly lower in the 3 experimental groups compared with the saline group.

CONCLUSION

In this in vitro experiment, EM-1, EM-2, and OMF inhibited the immunosuppressant function of cultured rat peritoneal macrophages, including decreasing TNF-α and IL-1β concentrations and phagocytic and bactericidal activities.

Circulating microRNAs as potential non-invasive biomarkers for the early detection of hypertension-related stroke

Hypertension is one of the most important risk and modifiable factors for stroke. Crucial in managing the cerebrovascular damage caused by long-lasting and inadequately treated hypertension is not only lowering arterial blood pressure but also early predicting subtypes of hypertension-related stroke and applying more effective interventions. Accumulating evidence suggested that circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) could be developed as biomarkers for early recognition of the onset of a variety of diseases. The role of miRNAs has been extensively reviewed, involving cardiac hypertrophy, hypertensive heart failure, kidney failure and renal fibrosis. miRNA research in stroke is still in its infancy, although there are few literatures reviewing the role of miRNAs in the processes of hypertension-related stroke. This review summarizes current advances in miRNAs regulation of critical pathogenic process underlying hypertension, ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, and highlights the potential of using circulating miRNAs as noninvasive biomarkers for the early detection of hypertension-related stroke.

Mu-opioidergic modulation differs in deep and superficial wide-dynamic range dorsal horn neurons in mice

The spinal cord dorsal horn is an important action site for morphine analgesia. Wide-dynamic range (WDR) neurons in the dorsal horn are essential to spinal pain transmission and show increased excitability after repetitive noxious drive (windup). In light of differences in mu-opioid receptor distribution and neurophysiological properties of WDR neurons between deep and superficial dorsal horn, we recorded extracellular single-unit activity of WDR neurons from deep (350-700 μm) and superficial (<350 μm) dorsal horn in C57BL/6 mice and compared their responses to spinal superfusion of morphine (0.5mM, 30 μl) and naloxone (1mM, 30 μl). The windup level to repetitive electrical stimulation of 1.0 Hz (16 pulses, suprathreshold for C-fiber activation, 2.0 ms) was significantly decreased by morphine in deep (n=8), but not superficial (n=11), WDR neurons. However, the steady C-component response to graded intra-cutaneous electrical stimuli (0.01-5.0 mA, 2 ms) was significantly depressed by morphine only in superficial neurons. In separate experiments, spinal administration of naloxone facilitated the development of windup to 0.2 Hz stimulation in deep (n=10), but not superficial (n=8), WDR neurons. Accordingly, morphine and naloxone modulation of neuronal activity may be related to a specific effect on neuronal sensitization/plasticity in deep WDR neurons, whereas morphine inhibition may depress acute noxious inputs to superficial WDR neurons. Our study suggests that mu-opioidergic modulation may be different in deep and superficial WDR neurons.

Early postoperative cognitive dysfunction is associated with higher cortisol levels in aged patients following hip fracture surgery

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between plasma cortisol levels and the occurrence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in aged patients following hip fracture surgery. A total of 175 patients, aged 65 years or older, who were scheduled for hip fracture surgery with spinal anesthesia were enrolled. Perioperative plasma levels of cortisol and neurocognitive tests were determined at 1 day preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively. Seventy-seven patients completed both blood sample collections and neurocognitive tests. POCD occurred in 29.9 % of patients at 7 days postoperatively. POCD patients presented significantly higher cortisol levels compared with non-POCD patients (P < 0.05). Furthermore, plasma cortisol levels were negatively correlated with mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores at 7 days postoperatively (P < 0.0001). A specificity of 93 % and a sensitivity of 35 % were identified for the plasma cortisol measurement to discriminate POCD patients from non-POCD patients. The results suggest higher plasma cortisol levels are associated with POCD in aged patients following hip fracture surgery with spinal anesthesia.

Changes in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in aged patients with early postoperative cognitive dysfunction following total hip-replacement surgery

PURPOSE

We hypothesized that different patterns of biomarkers of brain injury and inflammation exist in aged patients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) after total hip-replacement with spinal anesthesia.

METHODS

Eighty-three patients older than 65 years undergoing elective total hip-replacement surgery were enrolled in this prospective observational study. The CSF levels of Tau, phosphorylated-tau (pTau), amyloidβ1-42 (Aβ1-42), Tau/Aβ1-42, pTau/Aβ1-42, BDNF, IL-6, and IL-1β were measured preoperatively. Perioperative plasma levels of IL-1β, IL-6, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), C-reactive protein (CRP), and malonaldehyde (MDA) as well as neurocognitive tests were determined preoperatively and seven days postoperatively.

RESULTS

Sixty-one patients completed both the CSF and blood samples collection and the neurocognitive tests. POCD occurred in 24.6 % of patients at seven days after surgery. Patients with POCD had significantly higher IL-1β, Tau/Aβ1-42, pTau/Aβ1-42, and a lower level of Aβ1-42 in CSF when compared with the Non-POCD group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, POCD patients displayed significantly higher plasma levels of MDA when compared with Non-POCD patients at seven days after surgery (P < 0.05). There was no difference in preoperative CSF levels of Tau, IL-6, and pTau as well as plasma levels of IL-1β, IL-6, BDNF and CRP between POCD and Non-POCD groups (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The POCD patients were associated with higher postoperative plasma levels of MDA, and higher IL-1β and lower Aβ1-42 levels in preoperative CSF that might predispose the development of POCD in aged patients following total hip-replacement surgery with spinal anesthesia.

Experimental sepsis in pigs--effects of vasopressin on renal, hepatic, and intestinal dysfunction

INTRODUCTION

Low-dose arginine vasopressin (AVP) has been proposed as an adjunctive vasopressor for the treatment of advanced vasodilatory shock. However, its effects on renal, hepatic, and intestinal dysfunction during sepsis remain controversial.

METHODS

Fecal peritonitis was induced in 20 anesthetized, invasively monitored, mechanically ventilated female pigs. Following the time point of septic shock (defined as mean artery pressure (MAP) ≤65 mmHg), animals were randomly assigned to the following groups (n = 10): 1) a norepinephrine group with MAP between 65 and 75 mmHg; and 2) an AVP group with a constant infusion rate of 0.5 mU.kg(-1).min(-1).

RESULTS

MAP, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, hematocrit, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 were similar in the two groups during the 28-h observation period. Infusion of AVP was associated with lower total norepinephrine and fluid requirements. There was a statistically significant improvement in renal function as assessed by increased urine output and renal blood flow, and decreased serum creatinine, in the AVP group when compared with the norepinephrine group (P < 0.05). Histological analyses of the intestine, liver, and kidney showed similar light microscopical appearance of the two groups. Apoptotic cells in the liver were significantly fewer in the AVP group when compared with the norepinephrine group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

An adjunctive AVP to norepinephrine infusion exhibits a favorable impact on renal function without deleterious effects on the liver and intestine in a porcine model of experimental sepsis when compared with norepinephrine infusion alone.

Inhibition of the replication of hepatitis B virus in vitro by oxymatrine

This study investigated the inhibitory capacity of oxymatrine on in vitro hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication. HepG2.2.15 cells were treated with oxymatrine 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 or 1000 mg/l, or with human interferon-alpha2b (IFN-alpha2b 1000 U/l) as a positive control. Levels of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and HBV-DNA in cell supernatants were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and fluorescent quantitative-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, flow cytometric analysis and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labelling were used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of oxymatrine. The inhibitory effects of oxymatrine gradually increased as the concentration increased from 200 to 1000 mg/l for HBsAg and HBeAg, and from 200 to 400 mg/l for HBV-DNA. There was no inhibitory effect of oxymatrine at concentrations < 200 mg/l. No significant difference was seen between human IFN-alpha2b (positive control) and oxymatrine >or= 200 mg/l. It is concluded that oxymatrine can inhibit in vitro HBV replication and antigen expression at concentrations >or= 200 mg/l.

Superconductivity in iron telluride thin films under tensile stress

By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, a nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with a transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, superconductivity is accompanied by a softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition, and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of the sign of the lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found to exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

Preparation and superconductivity of iron selenide thin films

FeSe(x) (x = 0.80,0.84,0.88,0.92) thin films were prepared on SrTiO(3)(001)(STO), (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O(3)(001) (LSAT), and LaAlO(3)(001) (LAO) substrates by a pulsed laser deposition method. All of the thin films show single-phase and c-axis oriented epitaxial growth, and are superconducting. Among them, the FeSe(0.88) thin films show a T(c,onset) of 11.8 K and a T(c,0) of 3.4 K. The upper critical magnetic field is estimated to be 14.0 T.
