Extended defect states of Ge/Si quantum dots using optical isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy

We investigated the hole emission processes of optically induced charges on the defect states and confined states of self-assembled Ge quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a p-i-n Si diode. Optical deep level transient spectroscopy (ODLTS) and optical isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (OICTS) were used to study the defect states in ten stacked Ge quantum dots. Using ODLTS and OICTS for QD-embedded samples, the peaks related to the defect states of Ge QDs could be classified distinctly; it was about 20-50 times higher in intensity than that for the bulk defect states. The charges emitted from the QD defect state were observed near 93 K, and the activation energy was calculated to be E(V)+177 meV. The defect state followed the logarithmic capture kinetics and the Arrhenius-determined apparent activation energy decreased in the band gap as the optical injection width increased. We suggest that Ge QD defect states in Si could exist as extended states.

Bio-distribution and anti-tumor efficacy of PEG/PLA nano particles loaded doxorubicin

As a more effective in vivo drug delivery system, several methods loading anti-cancer drugs to biodegradable and biocompatible nano-particles have been explored and developed. Supposedly due to the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, systemic administration of these nano-particles have been found to result in accumulation of nano-particles into solid tumors. In this study, we prepared nano-particles using polyethylene glycol (PEG)/poly-L-lactide (PLLA) diblock copolymer and loaded doxorubicin into these nano-particles (Nano-dox). The fabricated nano-particles exhibited sustained release kinetics of the drug in vitro. To follow the in vivo biodistribution of 200-350 nm sized nano-dox particles in tumor (syngenic renal cell adenocarcinoma: RENCA) bearing mouse, the carboxylfluorescenin diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE) was loaded into the nano-particles. Nano-dox accumulated preferentially in tumors; however, in terms of its anti-tumor efficacy, it did not show any marked benefits, compared to freely-administered doxorubicin. This result suggests the need to re-consider and evaluate what type of anti-cancer reagents we to be used in the ongoing efforts of coupling drug delivery system with tumor EPR effects.

Clinical course and lung function change of idiopathic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia

Most studies of idiopathic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) have primarily studied mortality. In order to clarify the detailed outcome and prognostic markers in idiopathic NSIP, the clinical course with initial radiological and clinical features was analysed. The clinical course of 83 patients who were classified with idiopathic NSIP (72 fibrotic, 11 cellular; 27 males and 56 females; mean+/-sd age 54.4+/-10.1 yrs) was retrospectively analysed. In fibrotic NSIP, 16 (22%) patients died of NSIP-related causes with a median (range) follow-up of 53 (0.3-181) months. Despite the favourable survival (5-yr 74%), patients with fibrotic NSIP were frequently hospitalised with recurrence rate of 36%. Reduced forced vital capacity at 12 months was a predictor of mortality. On follow-up, lung function was improved or stable in approximately 80% of the patients. The extent of consolidation and ground-glass opacity on initial high-resolution computed tomography correlated significantly with serial changes of lung function, and the presence of honeycombing was a predictor of poor prognosis. During follow-up, eight (10%) patients developed collagen vascular disease. In conclusion, the overall prognosis of fibrotic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia was good; however, there were significant recurrences despite initial improvement and a subset of the patients did not respond to therapy. Some patients developed collagen vascular diseases at a later date.

Examination of bovine lactoferrin binding to bifidobacteria

In the present study, lactoferrin binding to bifidobacteria and detection of lactoferrin-binding protein in membrane fractions of several bifidobacteria have been demonstrated. This is the first report showing the binding of bovine lactoferrin to four Bifidobacterium spp. (B. infantis, B. breve, B. bifidum, B. longum) incubated with biotinylated lactoferrin and fluorescein conjugated-avidin and observed under an inverted confocal laser scanning microscope. Fluorescence staining showed lactoferrin binding at the pole of the bacterial cells. A lactoferrin-binding protein with a molecular weight of approximately 67 kDa was also detected in the membrane fraction of Bifidobacterium spp. by far western blotting technique using biotinylated lactoferrin and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated streptavidin. Based on the results of this and previously reported studies, we suggest that binding of lactoferrin to Bifidobacterium longum is strain-dependent.

Phase I study of proteasome inhibitor bortezomib plus CHOP in patients with advanced, aggressive T-cell or NK/T-cell lymphoma

The aim of the study was to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and safety of the combination of bortezomib and cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) as first-line therapy in advanced, aggressive T-cell lymphoma. Patients received increasing doses of bortezomib on days 1 and 8 (weekly schedule, 1.0, 1.3, and 1.6 mg/m(2)/dose) in addition to 750 mg/m(2) cyclophosphamide, 50 mg/m(2) doxorubicin, 1.4 mg/m(2) vincristine on day 1 and 100 mg/day prednisolone on days 1 to 5, every 3 weeks. Six cycles of therapy administered every 21 days were planned. Thirteen patients, who had stage III/IV chemonaive aggressive T-cell lymphoma, received a total of 55 cycles of treatment. One patient experienced hematologic dose-limiting toxicity (grade 4 neutropenia associated with febrile episode) at the 1.0 mg/m(2)/dose of bortezomib. There was no dose-limiting non-hematologic toxicity. The MTD was not reached at 1.6 mg/m(2) dose level of bortezomib. The overall complete remission rate in all patients was 61.5% (95% confidence interval = 31.6-86.1). Bortezomib can be safely combined with CHOP chemotherapy and constitutes an active regimen in advanced-stage, aggressive T-cell lymphoma patients. The recommended dose for subsequent phase II studies of bortezomib plus CHOP is 1.6 mg/m(2)/dose of bortezomib on days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks as first-line treatment.

Pulmonary tuberculosis with acute respiratory failure

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics, prognoses and predictors of mortality of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with acute respiratory failure (ARF), and to investigate the adjunctive use of corticosteroids in such cases. TB patients with ARF requiring mechanical ventilation (n = 90) were enrolled retrospectively during 1989-2006. The patients were divided into two groups: tuberculous pneumonia (TBP; n = 66), and miliary TB (MTB; n = 24). The TBP patients were older than the MTB patients (mean age 68.0 versus 54.5 yrs), and the mean+/-SD interval from hospital admission to start of anti-TB treatment was longer for the TBP than for the MTB group (5.0+/-7.0 versus 2.8+/-2.5 days). However, there was no difference in in-hospital mortality rate between the two groups (68.2 versus 58.3%). In the TBP patients, multivariate analysis showed that advanced age and shock unrelated to sepsis were associated with poor outcomes. Even though corticosteroid use was a predictor of survival in TBP patients, it was difficult to conclusively determine the efficacy of corticosteroids in TBP with ARF because of the retrospective study design. The present study reveals the need for randomised controlled trials to clarify the role of corticosteroids as adjunctive therapy in the management of tuberculous pneumonia with acute respiratory failure.

Incidence of tuberculosis among health care workers at a private university hospital in South Korea

SETTING

A private university hospital in South Korea.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) among health care workers (HCWs) employed at a university hospital in South Korea.

DESIGN

The occurrence of TB cases among HCWs over a 6-year period (2001-2006) was reviewed. The prevalence of TB was compared with that of the general population using a prevalence ratio (PR) adjusted by age and sex.

RESULTS

The study involved 8433 people. TB developed in 61 HCWs (0.72%). The prevalence ratio among all HCWs was 1.05 (95%CI 0.80-1.35). In occupational subgroups, the PRs for doctors, nurses and employees in other departments were respectively 0.58 (95%CI 0.30-1.01), 1.81 (95%CI 1.21-2.59) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.58-1.46). For nurses working in TB-related departments, the relative risk of developing TB was 3.4 times higher (95%CI 1.52-8.25) than for employees in other departments (P=0.005). The PR for nurses working in TB-related department was 5.1 (95%CI 3.23-8.42).

CONCLUSION

Among HCWs, nurses working in TB-related departments were at increased risk of developing TB. This suggests that some TB develops via in-hospital infection.

In vitro fibroblast response to ultra fine grained titanium produced by a severe plastic deformation process

The in vitro response of the mouse fibroblast cell line 3T3 on the surface of ultrafine grained titanium [produced by a severe plastic deformation (SPD) process] has been studied in this work. SPD Ti showed much higher strength than the coarse grained Ti and equivalent to that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Better cell proliferation was observed on SPD Ti compared to conventional Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. This could be attributed to the increased surface free energy by reduction in the grain size and possibly the presence of a large number of nano size grooves at the triple point junctions in SPD Ti sample. There was no significant difference in the results of cytotoxicity tests of fine and coarse grained materials.

Non-specific adsorption of fish immunoglobulin M (IgM) to blocking reagents on ELISA plate wells

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a popular technique for quantifiable detection of specific antibodies in warm-blooded animals, but it has not been accepted for detection of fish antibodies because of its low reproducibility, which is due in part to high background optical density (OD) measurements. In the present study, we report that the high background of a fish antibody-detection ELISA resulted from non-specific adsorption of fish immunoglobulin M (IgM) to blocking reagents on the ELISA plate wells. Four fish sera (from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, masu salmon O. masou, Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus and koi Cyprinus carpio) were poured into ELISA plate wells pre-blocked with several blocking reagents (skim milk, soybean milk, bovine serum albumin, fetal bovine serum, gelatin and Roche BlockingReagent) and then washed out in order to measure the remaining fish IgM on the ELISA plate wells. Significant amounts of fish IgMs (OD absorbance at 492 nm: 0.3 to 1.1) remained on the ELISA plate wells with no antigenic protein except blocking reagents. The amount of remaining fish IgMs on the ELISA plate wells decreased significantly following treatment of fish sera with skim milk. However, the specific immuno-reactivity of fish IgM was not reduced by such treatment. Thus, we conclude that treatment of fish sera with skim milk is useful in reducing the high background OD often observed in fish IgM detection ELISA.

Multicenter study of intravenous busulfan, cyclophosphamide, and etoposide (i.v. Bu/Cy/E) as conditioning regimen for autologous stem cell transplantation in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

The current study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of a combination of intravenous busulfan, cyclophosphamide and etoposide (i.v. Bu/Cy/E) as a conditioning regimen prior to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Sixty-four patients with relapsed/refractory (n=36) or high-risk (n=28) lymphoma were enrolled. The high-dose chemotherapy consisted of i.v. Bu (0.8 mg kg(-1) i.v. q 6 h from day -7 to day -5), Cy (50 mg kg(-1) i.v. on day -3 and day -2) and E (400 mg m(-2) i.v. on day -5 and day -4). The median age was 43 (range 18-65) years, and 39 patients were male. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (40.6%) was the most common histological subtype. All evaluable patients achieved an engraftment of neutrophils (median, day 12) and platelets (median, day 13). Hepatic veno-occlusive disease was observed in four patients (three mild, one moderate grade), and two patients (3.1%) died from treatment-related complications. At a median follow-up of 16.4 months, 15 patients (23.4%) exhibited a relapse or progression, while 13 patients (20.3%) had died of disease. The estimated 3-year overall and progression-free survival for all patients was 72.1 and 70.1%, respectively. In conclusion, the conditioning regimen of i.v. Bu/Cy/E was well tolerated and seemed to be effective in patients with aggressive NHL.

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst of the patella: a case report

Aneurysmal bone cysts account for less than 1% of primary bone tumours and have a predilection for the metaphyses of the long bones of the leg. Only 1% of all aneurysmal bone cysts occur in the patella. We report on a 30-year-old man with a primary aneurysmal bone cyst in the right patella treated with curettage. The defect was filled with demineralised bone matrix and allogeneic cancellous bone graft. At the 1.5-year follow-up, the bone graft was well incorporated, the patient experienced no pain or tenderness and had a full range of knee movement.

Histopathologic changes of acellularized xenogenic carotid vascular grafts implanted in a pig-to-goat model

INTRODUCTION

The present study was designed to determine the in vivo patency and recellularization pattern of acellularized small-diameter xenogenic arterial grafts. We implanted acellularized porcine carotid arteries in bilateral carotid arteries of goats and microscopically analyzed the recellularization pattern of these grafts with the recipient's cells over time.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Carotid arteries of pigs weighing 30-40 kg were harvested and decellularized with hypertonic saline followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate. Acellularized porcine carotid vascular xenografts (0.4-0.5 cm in diameter) were prepared into 4 cm-long segments and implanted bilaterally in the carotid arteries of 10 black-haired goats. The in vivo patency of the implanted acellularized xenogenic grafts was evaluated at regular intervals by color Doppler ultrasonography. The goats were sacrificed at predetermined intervals (1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months after implantation), two animals at each interval. Upon retrieval, visual inspections and histopathologic examinations of the grafts were performed. To identify smooth muscle cells and functioning endothelial cells, immunohistochemical staining for alpha-smooth muscle actin and von Willebrand factor were also performed.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

All experimental animals survived the observation period. Nineteen out of 20 implanted grafts showed patency with no thrombi. Microscopic analysis revealed that the grafts were completely covered with the hosts' endothelial cells, beginning from anastomotic sites. The grafts were gradually recellularized with recipients'cells including fibroblasts, myofibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. In conclusion, this study suggested that acellularized xenogenic vascular grafts can be a good alternative for the small-diameter vascular graft.

New clinical grading system for chronic GVHD predicts duration of systemic immunosuppressive treatment and GVHD-specific and overall survival

We investigated outcomes according to a new clinical grading system for chronic graft-versus-host disease (chronic GVHD) in 38 patients who developed chronic GVHD after an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. We categorized the patients into three grade groups, namely, grade I, grade II and grade III, according to the presence of three risk factors: extensive skin involvement, thrombocytopenia (TP) and progressive type of onset. Sixteen patients were classified into grade 1, 19 into grade II and three into grade III. The probability of withdrawal of systemic immunosuppression (IST) at 1, 2 and 3 years was 61, 76 and 87%, respectively. Patients with grades 2 or 3 chronic GVHD had prolonged duration of systemic IST compared to grade 1 (P=0.043). The probability of GVHD-specific survival (GSS) at 5 years was 52%. Twenty-two of 38 patients with chronic GVHD were still alive and the estimated 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was 60%, whereas that for the group with chronic GVHD grade I and grade II+III was 64 and 48% (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that prior occurrence of acute GVHD, chronic GVHD grade, serum bilirubin over 1.5 mg/dl, date of diagnosis of chronic GVHD (<day 150 versus >day 150) and transplantation-risk factor were independent prognostic factors for GSS and OS.

Impact of short-term exposure to fluoroquinolones on ofloxacin resistance in HIV-negative patients with tuberculosis

SETTING

Seoul, Korea, a country with an intermediate tuberculosis (TB) burden and low prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

OBJECTIVES

To determine the frequency of ofloxacin (OFX) resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and to assess whether short-term use of fluoroquinolones (FQNs) induces ofloxacin-resistant M. tuberculosis.

DESIGN

The subject cohort consisted of 2788 patients with culture-confirmed TB with drug susceptibility testing data; only four were HIV-positive. The patients were divided into two groups: those who were or were not recently exposed to FQNs.

RESULTS

Of the 2788 isolates, the rates of OFX resistance were 1.1% and 8.5% in initially treated and retreated patients, respectively (P < 0.05). Of the 94 OFX-resistant isolates, 83 (88.3%) were multidrug-resistant (MDR). There was no difference in rates of OFX resistance throughout the study period, or between the FQN-exposed (1/39, 2.6%) and control groups (93/2749, 3.4%). The median duration of FQN treatment was 7 days (range 1-47 days). One OFX-resistant isolate in the FQN-exposed group was MDR.

CONCLUSION

The rate of OFX-resistant M. tuberculosis was low and stationary throughout the study period in Korea. Most OFX resistance was accompanied by MDR, and the frequency of OFX-resistant M. tuberculosis was low in subjects taking short-term FQNs.

The analysis of mental stress using time-frequency distribution of heart rate variability signal

Conventional power spectrum methods based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), autoregressive(AR) model are not appropriate for analyzing biomedical signals whose spectral characteristics change rapidly. On the other hand, time-frequency analysis has more desirable characteristics of a time-varying spectrum. In this study, we investigated the spectral components of heart rate variability (HRV) in a time-frequency domain. Then, from the instantaneous frequency, obtained from time-frequency distribution, the method extracting frequency components of HRV was proposed. The subjects were 17 healthy young men. A coin-stacking task was used to induce mental stress. In the results, the emotional stress of subjects produced an increase in sympathetic activity. Sympathetic activation was responsible for the significant increase in the LF/HF ratio. The subjects were divided into two groups with task ability. The subject who had higher mental stress had a lack of task ability.

Primary NK-/T-cell lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract: clinical characteristics and endoscopic findings

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS

Primary NK-/T-cell lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a very rare disease with a poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and endoscopic characteristics of patients with primary gastrointestinal NK-/T-cell lymphoma.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The clinical features of 14 patients with primary gastrointestinal NK-/T-cell lymphoma and the endoscopic findings in 11 of these patients were reviewed. Their median age was 42 years (range 23-78) at the time of diagnosis.

RESULTS

The initial presenting symptoms of primary gastrointestinal NK-/T-cell lymphoma were gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 6, 42%), abdominal pain (n = 4, 29%), and epigastric soreness (n = 4, 29%). The disease was at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis: stage II in 5 patients (36%); stage III in 4 (28%); and stage IV in 5 (36%). Initial treatment was with chemotherapy (n = 8, 57%) or surgical resection (n = 5, 36%). The median survival for all patients was 9 months. On endoscopy in 11 patients, the anatomic location of the primary lesion was found to be: stomach, n = 3 (27%); esophagus, n = 2 (18%); duodenum, n = 1 (9%); and the ileocolonic area, n = 5 (46%). These lesions were ulceroinfiltrative in 4 cases (36%), ulcerative in 3 cases (27%), superficial/erosive in 3 cases (27%), and infiltrative in 1 case (9%). No prominent fungating mass was seen in any patient.

CONCLUSIONS

Primary gastrointestinal NK-/T-cell lymphoma was endoscopically characterized by superficial/erosive, ulcerative, or ulceroinfiltrative lesions without fungating mass. The most common presenting symptom was gastrointestinal bleeding. Despite aggressive treatments, the prognosis was very poor.

Isolation and characterization of four ethylene signal transduction elements in plums (Prunus salicina L.)

Plums are climacteric fruits: their ripening is associated with a burst of ethylene production and respiration rate. Stone fruits, including plum, have a distinct pattern of growth and development, described as a double sigmoid pattern. In order to understand the developmental control of ethylene perception in plum, four ethylene perception and signal transduction components (EPSTCs) were characterized, including two ETR1-like proteins (Ps-ETR1 and Ps-ERS1), a CTR1-like protein, and an ethylene-responsive element-binding factor (ERF). Their regulation was studied throughout fruit development and ripening in early and late cultivars. Analysis of transcript levels revealed that only Ps-ERF1 and Ps-ERS1 accumulated immediately after fertilization. Increases in Ps-ETR1 and Ps-CTR1 transcript levels could not be detected before S3 of fruit development. Marked differences associated with the ripening behaviour of early ('Early Golden') and late ('Shiro') Japanese plum cultivars were observed. The early cultivar showed ripening patterns typical of climacteric fruits accompanied by sharp increases of the four transcript levels in an ethylene-dependent manner. However, the late cultivar exhibited a suppressed-climacteric pattern, with a slight increase in ethylene production related to ripening. The accumulation of the Ps-ETR1 (and not Ps-CTR1) mRNA in the late cultivar was ethylene independent. Ps-ERS1 mRNA was expressed at low, constant levels, while, Ps-ERF1 remained undetectable. The differences between the two plum cultivars in the date and rate of ripening in relation to the differences in the accumulation patterns of the four mRNAs are discussed.

Nucleotide diversity of Japanese isolates of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) based on the glycoprotein gene

Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), a member of the genus Novirhabdovirus, causes a highly lethal disease of salmonid fish. In the present study, G gene nucleotide sequences of 9 Japanese IHNV isolates obtained from 1971 to 1996 were analyzed to evaluate the genetic diversity and compared with IHNV isolates from North America and Europe. A radial phylogenetic tree revealed 5 major clusters including 3 genogroups (U, M and L) for North American isolates and 1 genogroup for European isolates. Five Japanese isolates from 1971 to 1982 appeared in the cluster for genogroup U, while the remaining Japanese isolates from 1980 to 1996 formed a new genogroup, JRt (Japanese rainbow trout). Maximum nucleotide diversity among the Japanese isolates was 4.5%, which was greater than that within the North American isolates (3.6%), and the degree of nucleotide diversity within Japanese isolates was increased by inclusion of the genogroup JRt isolates. It was concluded that Japanese isolates shared a common source with the genogroup U of the North American isolates and that there were large divergences between Japanese isolates before and after the 1980s.

High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation in extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma: a retrospective comparison with non-transplantation cases

To determine the role of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDC/ASCT) in extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma patients, we conducted a retrospective analysis. In our previous study, we searched for patients who had received HDC/ASCT and identified 16 eligible patients and compared the treatment outcome with historical control group (n=246). Nine patients received HDC/ASCT in the first (CR1) or second complete remission (CR2), while seven patients received HDC/ASCT as salvage. Twelve of 16 patients achieved or maintained CR after HDC/ASCT. Among the 12 patients, five patients relapsed. Estimated 2-year overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) rates were 71.3+/-12.4% and 25.8+/-14.3%, respectively. There was a tendency of better survival in patients who received HDC/ASCT as compared to those who did not (P=0.091). In subset analysis, patients who underwent HDC/ASCT at CR (P=0.049) and patients with stage III or IV (P=0.001) had a favorable outcome. Patients with NKIPI 3,4 or EUNKTL, who underwent HDC/ASCT had more prolonged survival without statistical significance (P=0.055 and 0.056). In conclusion, HDC/ASCT may be considered as a treatment option for patients with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, especially those in CR, with advanced disease (stage III/IV or EUNKTL) and high NKIPI scores.

Comparison of two commercial interferon- assays for diagnosing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

The clinical usefulness of ex vivo interferon-gamma assays may largely depend on the assay format and epidemiological status of tuberculosis (TB) in the region studied. From July 2004 to June 2005 a prospective comparison study was undertaken at a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea. The results of tuberculin skin tests (TST) and the commercially available QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) and T SPOT-TB (SPOT) assays were compared in an intermediate TB-burden country. Of the 224 participants studied, results from all three tests (TST, QFT-G, and SPOT) were available in 218; 87 with active TB and 131 at a low risk for TB. Using 10 mm as a cut-off for TST, SPOT sensitivity (96.6%) was significantly higher than that seen for TST (66.7%) and QFT-G (70.1%). QFT-G showed superior specificity over TST (91.6 versus 78.6%). Although the specificity of QFT-G was higher than that of SPOT (91.6 versus 84.7%), the difference was not statistically significant. Whilst some differences were found in the performance of the two commercialised interferon-gamma assays, they seemed to be superior in their detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection compared with tuberculin skin tests. The most appropriate choice of interferon-gamma assay to use may depend on the clinical setting.
