Abstract
A new interferometer is installed on the west anchor cell of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. In GAMMA 10, we have used a heterodyne-type interferometer with a 70-GHz IMPATT oscillator and a 150-MHz oscillator for frequency modulation. The new interferometer consists of a 17.5-GHz phase locked dielectric resonator oscillator and a 37.5-MHz temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, as well as frequency multipliers. The main motivation for the new interferometer using frequency multipliers is to achieve a stable and cost effective interferometer. Direct anchor heating experiments with new anchor ion cyclotron range of frequency antennas in both the west and the east anchor cells are carried out. Density increases in both anchor cells are clearly observed using the new interferometer.

Abstract
In the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror, the typical electron density is comparable to that of the peripheral plasma of torus-type fusion devices. Therefore, an effective method to increase Thomson scattering (TS) signals is required in order to improve signal quality. In GAMMA 10, the yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG)-TS system comprises a laser, incident optics, light collection optics, signal detection electronics, and a data recording system. We have been developing a multi-pass TS method for a polarization-based system based on the GAMMA 10 YAG TS. To evaluate the effectiveness of the polarization-based configuration, the multi-pass system was installed in the GAMMA 10 YAG-TS system, which is capable of double-pass scattering. We carried out a Rayleigh scattering experiment and applied this double-pass scattering system to the GAMMA 10 plasma. The integrated scattering signal was made about twice as large by the double-pass system.

Abstract
A key obstacle to understanding neural circuits in the cerebral cortex is that of unraveling the diversity of GABAergic interneurons. This diversity poses general questions for neural circuit analysis: how are these interneuron cell types generated and assembled into stereotyped local circuits and how do they differentially contribute to circuit operations that underlie cortical functions ranging from perception to cognition? Using genetic engineering in mice, we have generated and characterized approximately 20 Cre and inducible CreER knockin driver lines that reliably target major classes and lineages of GABAergic neurons. More select populations are captured by intersection of Cre and Flp drivers. Genetic targeting allows reliable identification, monitoring, and manipulation of cortical GABAergic neurons, thereby enabling a systematic and comprehensive analysis from cell fate specification, migration, and connectivity, to their functions in network dynamics and behavior. As such, this approach will accelerate the study of GABAergic circuits throughout the mammalian brain.

Abstract
Acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase (AT) is an enzyme that catalyses the CoA-dependent thiolytic cleavage of acetoacetyl-CoA to yield 2 molecules of acetyl-CoA, or the reverse condensation reaction. A full-length cDNA clone pBSGT-3, which has homology to known thiolases, was isolated from Dictyostelium cDNA library. Expression of the protein encoded in pBSGT-3 in Escherichia coli, its thiolase enzyme activity, and the amino acid sequence homology search revealed that pBSGT-3 encodes an AT. The recombinant AT (r-thiolase) was expressed in an active form in an E. coli expression system, and purified to homogeneity by selective ammonium sulfate fractionation and two steps of column chromatography. The purified enzyme exhibited a specific activity of 4.70 mU/mg protein. Its N-terminal sequence was (NH₂)-Arg-Met-Tyr-Thr-Thr-Ala-Lys-Asn-Leu-Glu-, which corresponds to the sequence from positions 15 to 24 of the amino acid sequence deduced from pBSGT-3 clone. The r-thiolase in the inclusion body expressed highly in E. coli was the precursor form, which is slightly larger than the purified r-thiolase. When incubated with the cell-free extract of Dictyostelium cells, the precursor was converted to the same size to the purified r-thiolase, suggesting that the presequence at the N-terminus is removed by a Dictyostelium processing peptidase.

Abstract
Two dimensional (2D) plasma image analysis is useful to study the improvement of plasma confinement in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. We have constructed a 2D interferometer system with phase imaging method for studying 2D plasma density distribution and its fluctuation measurement in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10. 2D profiles of electron density and its fluctuation have been successfully obtained by using this 2D phase imaging system. We show that 2D plasma density and fluctuation profiles clearly depends on the axial confining potential formation with application of plug electron cyclotron heating in GAMMA 10.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are toxic and carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. The contamination of crops, feeds, and foods with aflatoxins can have serious effects on the health of humans and animals. Although many studies have been done to develop aflatoxin-control strategies, most are limited in their effectiveness. As part of an effort to develop control procedures, we have devised simple and safe methods that are useful for identifying microorganisms that effectively inhibit aflatoxin production by fungi. These include the microtitre agar plate assay using norsolorinic acid-accumulating mutant fungi, the ultraviolet light photography method using an instant film, the tip culture method, a convenient RNA extraction method for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, and other methods. Results of a recent trial have shown that Achromobacter xylosoxidans significantly inhibited aflatoxin production by A. parsiticus, and that the main inhibitory substance produced by the bacterium was cyclo(L-leucyl-L-prolyl). This result confirms that the methods described herein are useful for identifying microorganisms that inhibit aflatoxin production by fungi and could contribute to the development of methods to reduce aflatoxin contamination in commodities.

Abstract
Symptom management in palliative care requires reliable symptom assessment. We assessed the inter-rater reliability of a simple proxy symptom-assessment scale using the Japanese version of the Support Team Assessment Schedule (STAS-J) in a hospital-based palliative care team (HPCT) setting. By doing this, we assessed symptoms in a series of consecutive patients at two university hospitals with certified HPCTs within 2 days of referral and 7 days after. A physician and nurse assessed 20 symptoms. In total, 120 patients were assessed within 2 days of referral and 92 patients at 7 days after referral. As a result, we find that the intra-class correlation coefficients were 0.02-0.89 at referral and 0.20-0.92 at 7 days after. The perfect concordance rates were 37-89% at referral and 53-96% at 7 days after. The perfect or +/-1 concordance rates were 71-97% at referral and 73-100% at 7 days after. In conclusion, the symptom item of the STAS-J had high inter-rater reliability.

Abstract
9577 Background: The Japan Hospice and Palliative Care Evaluation (J-HOPE) study was conducted in 2007 and 2008. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of end-of-life care at regional cancer centers (CCs), inpatient palliative care units (PCUs), and home hospices (HHs) in Japan from the perspective of bereaved family members. Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional mail survey was conducted in 2007 and 2008. The survey was sent to bereaved families 6–18 months after the death of a patient at 56 CCs, 100 PCUs, or 14 HHs. Outcome measures were the good death inventory, the care evaluation scale, and overall satisfaction with care. The protocol of this study was approved by the institutional review boards of each participating institution. Results: Of the 13,181 bereaved family members that received the survey, 8,163 (62%) participants returned their responses. Among bereaved family members, significantly fewer responded that patients were free from physical distress at CCs (50%) than PCUs (80%) and HHs (73%) (P<0.0001). Significantly fewer patients trusted the physicians at CCs (79%) when compared with PCUs (83%) and HHs (88%) (P<0.0001). Significantly fewer patients were valued as people at CCs (83%) than PCUs (93%) and HHs (95%) (P<0.0001). In addition, significantly fewer participants felt physicians should have worked to improve the patients' symptoms more quickly at CCs (55%) when compared with PCUs (78%) and HHs (77%) (P<0.0001). Significantly fewer participants felt nurse should improve their knowledge and skills regarding end-of-life care at CCs (51%) when compared with PCUs (76%) and HHs (78%) (P<0.0001). A total of 51% of participants reported that nurses should improve their knowledge and skills regarding end-of-life care. Finally, significantly fewer participants were satisfied with the end-of-life care provided by CCs (80%) when compared with PCUs (93%) and HHs (94%) (P<0.0001). Conclusions: Overall, the bereaved family members appreciated the end-of-life care provided by CCs, PCUs, and HHs in Japan. However, in some situations, the quality of end-of-life care provided by CCs was lower than that provided by PCUs and HHs. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the availability of the biodegradation potential of aniline and phenol as the indicator for evaluating pollutant impact on a river environment. Biodegradation tests employing river water microorganisms were carried out by a modified TOC-Handai method using aniline and phenol as substrates. Complete degradation time and half-life were determined as indicators expressing the biodegradation potential of aniline and phenol, respectively. Investigations in Lake Biwa-Yodo River basin for more than two years showed that the biodegradation potential of both compounds varied seasonally. In addition, aniline biodegradation potential seemed to be influenced by the hydraulic retention time at each sampling station, while downstream stations with large input of wastewater from the surrounding cities were divided from upstream stations by phenol biodegradation potential. Comparison of the biodegradation potential in rivers at different pollution levels also showed that polluted and less polluted rivers were clearly divided by phenol biodegradation potential. These results indicated that phenol biodegradation potential can be applied as an indicator for evaluating the soundness of river environment from the view point of ecological function.

Abstract
Plasma density radial profile measurements are an important study for fusion plasma researches. We reconstructed a multichannel microwave interferometer for radial plasma electron density and density fluctuation measurements with both changing the transmission horn position and using the Teflon lens by only using this system in a single plasma shot. By using this system, we can successfully measure the radial density and density fluctuation spectra in a single plasma shot.
