Abstract
Objective: To determine whether suction drainage is safe and effective compared with no-drainage in total knee arthroplasty. Methods: The literature search was based on PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Highwire, the Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI, VIP and WFSD.The data were analysed using RevMan 5.3.Fourteen randomised controlled trials involving 1 009 knees were included in our analysis. Results: Suction drainage increases the rate and volume of blood transfusion.No-drainage group increases the rate of wound problems (OR=1.92, 95%CI 1.21-3.04, P<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the incidence of periprosthetic infection (OR=0.68, 95%CI 0.20-2.30, P=0.54), VAS (OR=-0.09, 95%CI -0.32-0.14, P=0.46) and the length of stay (OR=0.41, 95%CI -0.21-1.03; P=0.19) when the drainage group was compared with the no-drainage group (P>0.05). Conclusions: No-drainage for easy total knee arthroplasty may be a better choice. However, orthopedic surgeon need to weigh the pros and cons of no-drainage in some complicated TKAs such as extra-articular deformity .

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the auditory efficacy of Bonebridge implantation in patients with bilateral congenital malformation of external and middle ear. Methods: Eleven cases (6 males and 5 females) had unilateral Bonebridge implantation. The age ranged from 8 to 26 and the average age was 16.9. Seven to ten days after operation, the first fitting was undergone. In acoustic sound field, the average auditory thresholds were respectively measured for unaided ears and Bonebridge implanted ears by pure tone auditory (PTA, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz). For the group over 12-year-old, MSTM was applied to evaluate speech discrimination score (SDS). For the other cases, MLNT was used as the test material. The auditory efficacy post Bonebridge implantation would be analyzed and evaluated by comparing the differences between unaided ears and Bonebridge implanted ears. Results: The bone conduction audibility threshold after Bonebridge implantation was as well as the preoperative. The auditory threshold with Bonebridge aided was improved to 25-35 dB HL, when compared to that of the unaided ears in the sound field. The SDS in the group over 12-year-old was improved about 50%; the efficacy was slightly limited for the other two cases (both less than 12 years old). Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between unaided ears and Bonebridge implanted ears in the sound field and SDS(P<0.05). Conclusions: The auditory efficacy of Bonebridge is significant and noticeable in patients with bilateral congenital malformation of external and middle ear. Bonebridge provides a new and effective way for patient with congenital malformation of external and middle ear to reconstruct hearing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Compare the results of molecular diffusion and mass flow in the interstitial space(ISS) displayed by using optical and magnetic probes and study partitioned drainage of the brain interstitial fluid (ISF). METHODS In the study, 36 male SD rats were randomly divided into fluorescent inspection group (18), magnetic tracer group (18). Then they were divided equally into caudate nucleus (Cn), thalamus (T) and substantia nigra (Sn) subgroup, 6 rats in each subgroup. Referencing the brain stereotaxic atlas, the coronal globus pallidus as center level, Cn, T or Sn were acted as puncture positioning target. A 10 μL microsyringe was stereotaxically positioned and the lucifer yellow (LY) solution of 2 μL 10 mmol/L was infused into centric position. The coronary slices undergo cardiac perfusion and fix respectively in time point Cn 3 h, T 2 h and Sn 1 h. The rat brain was placed in rat stainless steel brain matrices and cut backward along visual intersection. The injection point of coronal slice as the center level, take 3 slices in front of the center level and 2 slices behind of it. 1 mm for each slice and 6 slices in total. Then slices were detected by laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Simultaneous, in the same coordinate brain regions of another three groups, a gadolinium-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acidm (Gd-DTPA) solution of 2 μL 10 mmol/L was infused into different injection and detected by MRI tracer-based method. Then the Radiant can be used to measure distribution area of Gd-DTPA. RESULTS LY and Gd-DTPA have different distribution regions in Cn, T and Sn. After LY and Gd-DTPA were introduced into the Cn subgroup 3 h, compare the 1 to 6 levels distribution area of LY and Gd-DTPA as follows: (10.95±4.27) mm2 vs. (8.33±2.25) mm2, (18.16±4.74) mm2 vs. (16.42±2.88) mm2, (24.57±3.65) mm2 vs. (20.75±2.29) mm2, (34.81±3.32) mm2 vs. (28.88±1.51) mm2, (30.53±3.12) mm2 vs. (20.92±2.75) mm2, (12.15±4.92) mm2 vs. (10.00±1.89) mm2. The statistical analysis of every level was made by T test, and the difference of the distribution area between the two tracers were not statistically significant (t=0.940, P=0.400; t=0.546, P=0.614; t=1.534, P=0.200; t=2.809, P=0.480; t=2.693, P=0.055; t=0.707, P=0.518); After LY and Gd-DTPA were introduced into the T subgroup 2 h, compare the 1-6 levels distribution area of LY and Gd-DTPA as follows: (5.56±4.61) mm2 vs. (3.33±2.25) mm2, (16.21±3.36) mm2 vs. (11.42±2.88) mm2, (19.00±5.21) mm2 vs. (15.75±2.29) mm2, (25.32±5.49) mm2 vs. (22.33±3.25) mm2, (17.34±5.31) mm2 vs. (15.92±2.75) mm2, (7.67±6.19) mm2 vs. (5.00±1.89) mm2. The statistical analysis of every level was made by T test, and the difference of the distribution area between the two tracers were not statistically significant (t=0.753, P=0.493; t=1.875, P=0.134; t=0.990, P=0.378; t=0.810, P=0.464; t=0.413, P=0.701; t=0.716, P=0.514); After LY and Gd-DTPA were introduced into the Sn subgroup 1 h, compare the 1-6 levels distribution area of LY and Gd-DTPA as follows: (6.78±4.56) mm2 vs. (4.75±2.00) mm2, (12.65±5.04) mm2 vs. (10.44±1.13) mm2, (19.51±6.54) mm2 vs. (17.55±0.30) mm2, (28.72±5.45) mm2 vs. (24.48±1.32) mm2, (21.34±4.42) mm2 vs. (17.72±0.25) mm2, (13.00±5.46) mm2 vs. (12.00±2.88) mm2. The statistical analysis of every level was made by T test and the difference of the distribution area between the two tracers were not statistically significant (t=0.705, P=0.519; t=0.743, P=0.499; t=0.517, P=0.656; t=1.310, P=0.260; t=1.416, P=0.292; t=0.281, P=0.793), but the distribution area of LY is slightly more than Gd-DTPA. CONCLUSION LSCM imaging technology confirmed partitioned drainage of the brain ISF found by MRI tracer-based method and provided technology and method validation for MRI tracer-based method. LSCM imaging technology with higher contrast and resolution, therefore more sophisticated partitioned drainage of the brain interstitial fluid were got.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between the intakes of cured meat and the risk of colorectal cancer, and analyze the role of the interaction between cured meat intake and dietary habit or lifestyle for the risk of colorectal cancer. METHODS A well-designed questionnaire were used to collect retrospective information about demography, lifestyle and dietary habit from 400 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 400 controls matched by age and gender. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the possible association between the intake of cured meat and the risk of colorectal cancer. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction(GMDR)was used to analyze the interaction between cured meat intake and other dietary habits or lifestyle factors. RESULTS Data from conditional logistic regression analysis showed that compared with the people who had <8 times per year of cured meat intake, those had 8-23 times of cured meat intakes(OR=3.480, 95%CI: 2.022-5.991, P<0.001), 24-47 times of cured meat intakes(OR=4.526, 95%CI: 2.553-8.025, P<0.001), ≥48 times of cured meat intakes(OR=5.472, 95% CI: 3.105-9.642, P<0.001)had increased risk of colorectal cancer. There was a multiplied interaction between cured meat intake and pepper intake(OR=0.379, 95% CI: 0.190-0.758, P=0.009). The synergistic effect existed between cured meat intake and pickled vegetable intake; and the antagonism existed between cured meat intake and tea-drinking habit. GMDR analysis showed that interaction among red meat intake, pickled vegetable and cured meat intake on the risk of colorectal cancer might exist(P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS With the increase of frequency of cured meat intake, the risk of colorectal cancer increased gradually. The synergistic effect might existed between pickled vegetable intake and cured meat intake. Tea-drinking, pepper intake and cured meat intake might be antagonism in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Red meat intake, pickled vegetable intake and cured meat intake might have combined effect to increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To analysis the value of susceptibility vessel sign (SVS) in susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) in detecting thrombogenesis in middle cerebral artery (MCA) and its association with clinical prognosis. Methods: From December 2014 to December 2015 in People's Hospital of Zhengzhou University, we retrospectively examined clinical, imaging and experimental datafrom 104 consecutive patients with acute ischemic strokeand compared the consistency of detecting thrombus between SWI and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) using Kappa analysis. Clot Burden Score (CBS) was used to analysis extent and scope of thrombus. The association between CBS and clinical prognosiswere analyzed by Spearman rank correlation. Results: Mean age was 60 years old of the 104 patients with acute cerebral infarction and female accounted for 32%. There were 39 patients (37.5%) with SVS positive in SWI and 32 patients (30.8%) with both SVS positive and MRA occlusion or severe stenosis. The consistency in predicting arterial thrombosis of occlusion or severe stenosis between MRA and SVS in SWI was statistically significant (Kappa=0.502, P<0.001). There were 6 cases with SVS positive and none stenosis in MRA, and all the clots in this 6 case were located in distal artery. CBS was significantly associated with 3-month outcome (Spearman ρ =-0.472; P<0.001). Conclusion: SWI is superior to MRA for the detection of intracranial distal thrombus in patients with acute ischemic stroke of the MCA territory. Higher clot burden(lower CBS) could be an important clinical tool to estimate poor outcome in patients with acutecerebral infarction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work was designed to determine the relationship between serum expression level of cytokines and chemokines and progression of human ovarian cancer, and to evaluate the utility and diagnostic value of target markers as risk indicators. MATERIALS AND METHODS A set of candidate cytokines and chemokines (GM-CSF, IFN-γ, GRO, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, TNF-a, VEGF, EGF, RANTES, CCL21/6Ckine, and SDF-1/CXCL12) were measured using Luminex liquid chip technique in healthy women (n=75) and in women with ovarian cancer (n=77). RESULTS EGF, IL-6, MCP-1, 6Ckine, RANTES, and IL-10 were significantly overexpressed in the tumor group compared to those in normal controls, while IL-2 was reduced. The combined markers (EGF, MCP- 1, 6Ckine, IL-6, and TNF-α) achieved 91.1% sensitivity, 65.8% specificity, and 83.3% area under the ROC curve (AUC) in distinguishing serous ovarian cancer from health controls. CONCLUSION This study suggested that serum expression level of cytokines and chemokines correlate with progression of human ovarian cancer. The association of EGF, MCP-1, 6Ckine, IL-6, and TNF-α may contribute to increase diagnosis rate of malignant ovarian tumors.

Abstract
In recent years, procalcitonin and C-reactive protein have been used as important indexes in the detection of inflammation. In order to analyze the combined detection of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in infected patients, 57 subjects in the Clinical Laboratory of Zhengzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital with a bacterial infection were selected as the observation group. Correspondingly, 57 non-infected subjects were selected for the control group. The procalcitonin and C-reactive protein levels in the included cases were analyzed and compared by extracting peripheral blood. The results showed that the two indexes of C-reactive protein (46.13±8.24 mg/L) and procalcitonin (6.61±3.45 ug/L) of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P less than 0.05). The positive rates of C-reactive protein (71.93%) and procalcitonin (91.23%) of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P less than0.05). Within the observation group, the C-reactive protein and procalcitonin levels in the infected patients after 2 and 3 days of treatment, decreased significantly (P less than 0.05). This study indicates that the combined detection of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in patients with bacterial infections is effective and can be used in clinical settings.

Abstract
A novel bi-directional Retarding Field Analyzer (RFA) probe has been installed on a fast reciprocating drive system on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) to measure the ion temperature and fast electron fluxes. A Langmuir probe assembly was added on the top of the RFA head to control the RFA position relative to the last closed flux surface and to have a possibility to measure the electron density and temperature as well. Except the ion temperature, the fast electron fluxes from both ion and electron drift sides have been measured during lower hybrid current drive. The RFA probe has been also used to measure the fast electrons associated with edge localized modes (ELMs), indicating their substantial presence in the scrape-off-layer plasma of EAST.

Abstract
miRNAs are small non-coding regulatory RNAs that play key roles in diverse biological processes. In this study, we used the Solexa sequencing technique to profile miRNAs in breeder cock testes to illustrate their functions. A total of 663 co-expressed miRNAs and 3,180 co-expressed piRNAs were detected in three libraries. Based on Mir-X™ miRNA qRT-PCR, three miRNAs representing low, medium and high expression levels according to the sequencing results were selected randomly to validate the miRNAs' expression profiles. Results suggested that the miRNA expression profiles data could represent actual miRNA expression levels. Moreover, target genes prediction of the co-expressed miRNAs and further Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were performed, which revealed that some candidate miRNAs were involved in the regulation of the spermatogenesis process, spermatozoa function and testicular metabolism. In conclusion, we provided a useful resource for further elucidation of the miRNAs' regulatory role in spermatogenesis, contributing to a preliminary database for functional and molecular mechanistic studies in testicular metabolism, spermatogenesis and other testes functions.

Abstract
Uranium (U) has been released to surface soil and groundwater through military and industrial activities. Soluble forms of U transferred to drinking water sources and food supplements can potentially threaten humans and the biosphere due to its chemical toxicity and radioactivity. The immobilization of aqueous U onto iron-based minerals is one of the most vital geochemical processes controlling the transport of U. As a consequence, much research has been focused on the use of iron-based materials for the treatment of U contaminated waters. One material currently being tested is nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI). However, understanding the removal mechanism of U onto nZVI is crucial to develop new technologies for contaminated water resources. This review article aims to provide information on the removal mechanism of U onto nZVI under different conditions (pH, U concentration, solution ion strength, humic acid, presence of O2 and CO2, microorganism effect) pertinent to environmental and engineered systems, and to provide risk or performance assessment results with the stability of nZVI products after removal of U in environmental restoration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia patients have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) than normals. We examined the relationship between IGT and clinical phenotypes or cognitive deficits in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) Han Chinese patients with schizophrenia. METHOD A total of 175 in-patients were compared with 31 healthy controls on anthropometric measures and fasting plasma levels of glucose, insulin and lipids. They were also compared using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Neurocognitive functioning was assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Patient psychopathology was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS Of the patients, 24.5% had IGT compared with none of the controls, and they also had significantly higher levels of fasting blood glucose and 2-h glucose after an oral glucose load, and were more insulin resistant. Compared with those patients with normal glucose tolerance, the IGT patients were older, had a later age of onset, higher waist or hip circumference and body mass index, higher levels of low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides and higher insulin resistance. Furthermore, IGT patients had higher PANSS total and negative symptom subscale scores, but no greater cognitive impairment except on the emotional intelligence index of the MCCB. CONCLUSIONS IGT occurs with greater frequency in FEDN schizophrenia, and shows association with demographic and anthropometric parameters, as well as with clinical symptoms but minimally with cognitive impairment during the early course of the disorder.

Abstract
Shuangren-Anshen capsule (SAC) is a traditional Chinese herb that was improved in our laboratory. An orthogonal experiment [L9(3)(4)] was used to optimize the extraction conditions. In vivo, a hemorrhage mouse model was established and the hemoglobin contents of normal control, model control, and treated mice were measured. Additionally, the sedative and hypnotic effects of SACs were assessed based on pharmacological parameters such as changes in locomotive activity, forelimb raising, sleep latency, sleep duration, and number of mice that fell asleep. Brain tissue was sectioned and stained to detect changes in cell morphology by microscopy. The optimum extraction was achieved with 3 cycles of decoction for 120 min each with a 10-fold volume of water added. In the model control group, hemoglobin content significantly decreased and pharmacological parameters increased (P < 0.01) relative to that in the normal control group. Compared to the model control group, the group treated with 0.9 g/kg SAC showed significant (P < 0.05) increase or decrease in hemoglobin content and all pharmacological parameters except sleep duration. The groups treated with 1.8 or 3.6 g/kg SAC and the positive control group also showed significant alterations in hemoglobin content and pharmacological parameters (P < 0.05). In addition, SAC exhibited a protective effect on the morphological structures of the damaged nerve cells in the mouse model. Thus, an optimal extraction process was successfully identified. The pharmacological data also suggests that the drug can improve sleep quality. SAC treatment was shown to cause changes in hemoglobin content and cell morphology in a mouse model.

Abstract
Myostatin (MSTN) is an important member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily and is a muscle growth inhibitor. In the present study, we cloned the Chinese perch MSTN cDNA sequence and analyzed its expression patterns under various conditions. The MSTN full cDNA sequence was 3347 bp long, including an open-reading frame of 1131 bp, which encoded 376 amino acids. Sequence analysis demonstrated that the MSTN shared a highly conserved signal peptide, a TGF-β functional peptide, a hydrolytic site (RARR), and nine conservative cysteine residues with other members of the TGF-β superfamily. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analyses indicated that the MSTN had a close relationship with teleostean fish, but they are far separated from mammals. Real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the MSTN was strongly expressed in the skeletal muscle and heart tissues. Temporal expression analysis demonstrated that the MSTN gene was expressed in very low levels, from 20 to 90 dph (post-hatching development), and was at its highest level at 150 dph (P < 0.05). The fasting-re-feeding experiment showed that the expression of the MSTN gene was initially decreased in response to a single meal, after seven days of fasting, and subsequently increased significantly, and finally decreased back to its original level. Together, our results provided valuable knowledge regarding the regulation of MSTN gene expression in Chinese perch.

Abstract
Objective:To explore the clinical value of vestibular autorotation test (VAT) in the treatment for otogenic vertigo patients. Method:One hundred and twenty-nine definite otogenic vertigo patients were included. All patients underwent the VAT and caloric test (CT). The results were analyzed statistically. Result:In VAT examination, 89 (69.0%) cases were abnormal. In CT examination, 56 (43.4%) cases were abnormal. In the contrast test of VAT and CT, VAT results were abnormal in 47 (36.4%) patients and CT results were abnormal in 14 (10.9%) patients. The number of patients whose both VAT and CT results were abnormal was 42 (32.6%). The total number of patients with various abnormal results was 103 (79.8%). According to statistical analysis, the abnormal result rate of VAT was higher than that of CT. The abnormal result rate of both VAT and CT was higher than that of each single test. There was statistic significance in the difference (χ²=1.670, P<0.05). Conclusion:For otogenic vertigo patients, their abnormal result rate of VAT is higher than that of CT. VAT and CT can be mutually complementary. The combination of VAT and CT can help to understand the function of semicircular canal in the general and provide reference for the treatment of otogenic vertigo diseases.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate frequency and position characteristics of the vestibular dysfunction in vestublar neuritis patients. Method:Colaric test (CT), head impulse test (HIT), cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) were applied in 43 vestublar neuritis patients to assess their vestublar dysfunction. Superior vestublar nerve (S-VN), inferior vestibular nerve (I-VN), total vestibular nerve (T-VN) and each vestibular end organ incidence rate were calculated and statistically analyzed. Result:CT incidence rate (93.0%) was statistically higher than that of HIT (72.1%) (P<0.01). Total frequency incidence rate (72.1%) was statistically higher than that of low frequency (20.9%) (P<0.01). No high frequency only case was observed. The incidence rate of S-VN only, I-VN only and T-VN was 44.2%, 4.7% and 51.2% respectively. Among them, the incidence rate of I-VN was significantly lower than the others (P<0.01). The incidence rate of vestibular end organs was 17.4% (S-SCC), 44.2% (H-SCC), 20.9% (P-SCC), 39.5% (utricule) and 26.7% (saccule) respectively. The incidence rate of H-SCC was remarkably higher than the other semicircular canals (P<0.01). The difference between utricule and saccule was not statistically significant. Conclusion:The semicricular canal dysfunction in vestibular neuritis patients mainly involves total frequency of vestibular function, low frequency is more common than high frequency. Total vestibular nerve and single S-VN are mostly involved in vestibular neuritis.

Abstract
The oral administration of Enterococcus faecium EF1 to new-born suckling and weaning piglets along with their growth performances and intestinal microbiota was investigated in this study. Twenty-four new-born piglets were initially divided into 2 groups. The probiotics group received 2 ml of 10% sterilised skimmed milk by oral gavage supplemented with 6×10(8) cfu/ml viable E. faecium EF1 at the first, the third and the fifth day after birth, while the control group received 2 ml of 10% sterilised skimmed milk without probiotics at the same time. Results showed that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 was associated with a remarkable increase on the body weight of piglets for both suckling and weaning periods, by 30.73% (P<0.01) and 320.84% (P<0.01), and also decreased the diarrhoea rate, by 43.21% (P<0.05) and 71.42% (P<0.05), respectively. In addition, 454-pyrosequencing analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in the intestinal microbial diversity of the suckling piglets between the two groups; nevertheless, when compared to the control group, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in the probiotics group was substantially augmented, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria diminished. However, results indicated that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 did not have any influence on the relative abundance of Firmicutes in weaning piglets rather than increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and decreasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria. Furthermore, at the level of the Firmicutes phylum, the relative abundance of Lactobacillales in the probiotic group increased significantly. These findings suggest that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 to new-born piglets could improve the growth performance and intestinal microbiota of piglets for both suckling and weaning periods.

Abstract
Deformation twinning in pure aluminum has been considered to be a unique property of nanostructured aluminum. A lingering mystery is whether deformation twinning occurs in coarse-grained or single-crystal aluminum at scales beyond nanotwins. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of macrodeformation twins in single-crystal aluminum formed under an ultrahigh strain rate (∼10^{6} s^{-1}) and large shear strain (200%) via dynamic equal channel angular pressing. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the frustration of subsonic dislocation motion leads to transonic deformation twinning. Deformation twinning is rooted in the rate dependences of dislocation motion and twinning, which are coupled, complementary processes during severe plastic deformation under ultrahigh strain rates.

Abstract
A multi-energy soft x-ray (ME-SXR) diagnostic has been built for electron temperature profile in the edge plasma region in Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) after two rounds of campaigns. Originally, five preamplifiers were mounted inside the EAST vacuum vessel chamber attached to five vertically stacked compact diode arrays. A custom mechanical structure was designed to protect the detectors and electronics under constraints of the tangential field of view for plasma edge and the allocation of space. In the next experiment, the mechanical structure was redesigned with a barrel structure to absolutely isolate it from the vacuum vessel. Multiple shielding structures were mounted at the pinhole head to protect the metal foils from lithium coating. The pre-amplifiers were moved to the outside of the vacuum chamber to avoid introducing interference. Twisted copper cooling tube was embedded into the back-shell near the diode to limit the temperature of the preamplifiers and diode arrays during vacuum vessel baking when the temperature reached 150 °C. Electron temperature profiles were reconstructed from ME-SXR measurements using neural networks.

Abstract
We investigated 168 children and analysed the virological characterization and association with disease progression in children with hepatitis B virus (HBV) basal core promoter/precore (BCP/PC) mutants. Among 168 patients with HBV infection (aged 0.5-18 years old, mean 10.1), 86 of them had HBV-related liver cirrhosis (LC) and 82 had HBV-related chronic hepatitis B (CHB). A direct sequencing method was employed to determine the HBV genotypes and the mutations in BCP/PC regions. In all, 133 of them were infected with genotype C viruses (79.17%); only 35 patients (20.83%) were infected with genotype B viruses. Both LC patients and CHB patients had significantly higher ratios of genotype C when compared with the ratios of genotype B (83.7%-16.3% versus 74.4%-25.6%). For patients with CHB, the prevalence of BCP/PC wild-type viruses was 52.4%; but this was only 4.7% in patients with LC. The C1653T, T1753C, A1762T/G1764A and G1896A mutations had a significantly higher prevalence in patients with LC. Among all the patients with genotype B viruses, those with LC had lower HBV DNA levels and higher G1899A mutation frequency than patients with CHB. Among all the patients with genotype C viruses, the patients with LC had higher prevalence of C1653T, A1762T/G1764A and G1896A mutation frequency, higher hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) -negative rates, lower viral load, lower elevated alanine aminotransferase and lower anti-HBe positive rates than CHB patients. The HBV BCP/PC variants were more common in HBeAg-negative LC patients than in the CHB group (BCP, 53.4% versus 15.6%; PC, 18.6% versus 3.7%, respectively, p < 0.001). Patients with HBV genotype C viruses, high viral load and C1653T, A1762T/G1764A, G1896A mutant viruses, were more susceptible to developing LC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. MicroRNAs play important roles in the progression of CRC. This study aimed to investigate the role of miR-206 and its novel mechanism in the invasion and metastasis of CRC. METHODOLOGY Real-time RT-PCR or Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of miR-206, FMNL2 and c-MET in CRC cell lines and tissues. Luciferase reporter assays were conducted to detect the associations between miR-206 and 3'UTRs of FMNL2 and c-MET. A series of loss-of-function and gain-of-function assays were performed to evaluate the effect of miR-206 on the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of CRC cells. RESULTS miR-206 was significantly down-regulated in CRC tissues and correlated closely with differentiation, lymphatic metastasis and serosal invasion. miR-206 suppressed CRC cell proliferation by arresting CRC cells in the G1/G0 phase and accelerating apoptosis. miR-206 also inhibited cell invasion and lung metastasis in CRC cells. Mechanically, FMNL2 and c-MET were identified as direct targets of miR-206. And FMNL2 rescued the suppression of miR-206 in the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed functional and mechanistic links between miR-206 and oncogene FMNL2 and c-MET in the progression of CRC. miR-206 functioned as a tumor suppressor in the progression of CRC by targeting FMNL2 and c-MET. Restoration of miR-206 expression may represent a promising therapeutic approach for targeting malignant CRC.

Abstract
This study investigated the correlation of plama levels of inflammatory biomarkers [soluble cluster of differentiation 40 ligand (sCD40L), alpha fetoprotein A (fetuin-A), and pregnancy-associated protein A (PAPP-A)] with carotid plaque in patients with acute ischemic stroke. After undergoing color Doppler ultrasonography of the bilateral carotid arteries, 200 patients with acute ischemic stroke were grouped into plaque and non-plaque groups. The plaque group was further divided into stable and unstable plaque sub-groups by carotid plaque stability. Inter-group and -subgroup comparisons included demographic characteristics, current condition and medical history, and clinical laboratory and plama inflammatory biomarker data, and logistic regression explored the correlations between plama inflammatory biomarker levels and carotid plaques. Significantly higher sCD40L and fetuin-A levels were found in the plaque group than in the non-plaque group (all P < 0.05), with odds ratios (plaque vs non-plaque) of 6.372 and 4.101, respectively. Increased plama inflammatory biomarker levels were accompanied by a high risk of carotid plaque formation. Similarly, significantly higher plama sCD40L and PAPP-A levels were found in the unstable plaque subgroup than in the stable plaque subgroup (all P < 0.05), and the odds ratios (unstable vs stable) were 5.290 and 4.125, respectively. Increased plama inflammatory biomarker levels were accompanied by a high risk of carotid plaque instability. The study findings showed that plasma sCD40L, fetuin-A, and PAPP-A levels are associated with carotid plaque formation and instability. Fetuin-A and sCD40L might be predictors of carotid plaque formation, while PAPP-A and sCD40L might be predictors of carotid plaque instability.

Abstract
Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a protein produced by plants in response to adverse environmental stresses. In this study, we identified and analyzed Hsp90 gene family members using a bioinformatic method based on genomic data from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The results illustrated that tomato contains at least 7 Hsp90 genes distributed on 6 chromosomes; protein lengths ranged from 267-794 amino acids. Intron numbers ranged from 2-19 in the genes. The phylogenetic tree revealed that Hsp90 genes in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana L.) could be divided into 5 groups, which included 3 pairs of orthologous genes and 4 pairs of paralogous genes. Expression analysis of RNA-sequence data showed that the Hsp90-1 gene was specifically expressed in mature fruits, while Hsp90-5 and Hsp90-6 showed opposite expression patterns in various tissues of cultivated and wild tomatoes. The expression levels of the Hsp90-1, Hsp90-2, and Hsp90- 3 genes in various tissues of cultivated tomatoes were high, while both the expression levels of genes Hsp90-3 and Hsp90-4 were low. Additionally, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that these genes were involved in the responses to yellow leaf curl virus in tomato plant leaves. Our results provide a foundation for identifying the function of the Hsp90 gene in tomato.

Abstract
The human breast cancer-associated gene (BCA3) was first discovered in breast and prostate cancer cells lines. In vivo studies have shown that BCA3 is mainly expressed in breast tumor cells and not in normal breast and prostate tissues. To date, 3 splice variants of BCA3 have been reported: a double-absent variant lacking exon 3 and exon 5 (BCA3-1), an exon 3-absent variant (BCA3-2), and full-length BCA3. In this study, we investigated whether a novel BCA3 splice variant exists that lacks only the exon 5-encoding sequence. BCA3 variant splices were subcloned and sequenced using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The preliminary biological functions of the splices were identified using confocal microscopy and a luciferase assay. The absence of exon 3 and exon 5 influenced the subcellular localization of BCA3 and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB)-dependent gene expression. Exon 3 and exon 5 of BCA3 may function together to provide a nuclear localization signal or transport sequence to enter the nucleus, and exon 3 may contain specific sequence(s) or domain(s) that influence the NF-κB signal cascade. The discovery of novel BCA3 splicing indicates a new cancer research area, which may increase the understanding of cancer generation and development.

Abstract
Philodendron 'con-go' is widely cultivated indoors in China as an evergreen potted plant. In October 2013, a leaf spot on Philodendron 'con-go' was observed in the residential district of Luoyang (112.46° E, 34.62° N), Henan Province, China. The disease was characterized by oval-shaped, 10 to 20 × 25 to 55 mm, yellow to brown lesions with darker brown borders. Fifty potted plants were surveyed, and less than 2% of the leaves were infected. Lesions appeared mostly in old leaves. The symptomatic leaves affected on the plants' ornamental value, but had little impact on their health. Some lesions merged to form a large irregular lesion that could cover a whole leaf. Two infected leaves from one plant were selected randomly for the isolation of the pathogen. Lesions were cut into 1 cm2 pieces, soaked in 70% ethanol for 30 s, sterilized with 1% sodium hypochlorite for 5 min, then washed three times in sterilized distilled water. The pieces were incubated at 25°C on potato dextrose agar (PDA) for 4 to 5 days. A fungus was consistently isolated. Colonies of the fungus were deep green with white mycelium borders. Conidiophores were light brown with 2 to 4 septa. Conidia were obclavate, 14.6 to 49.1 × 8.3 to 16.4 μm, with a short beak, and with 1 to 5 transverse septa and 0 to 3 longitudinal septa, light brown to olive-brown. Based on morphology, the pathogen was identified as Alternaria alternata. Three isolates were selected randomly for further identification. To confirm pathogenicity, eight leaves of potted Philodendron 'con-go' plants were wounded with a sterile pin after wiping each leaf surface with 70% ethanol and washing each leaf with sterilized distilled water three times. The isolates were grown on PDA for 7 days and suspended in sterile distilled water to produce a final concentration of 2 × 105 spores/ml. A 5-μl drop of spore suspension was placed on each pin-wounded leaf. Each of three fungal isolates was inoculated on two leaves, and the control treatment (water inoculated) was done similarly on two leaves. The plants were placed in a growth chamber at 28°C with 80% relative humidity, 50 to 60 klx/m2 light intensity, and a 10-h photoperiod. After 7 days, lesions appeared on inoculated leaves, but the control leaves remained symptomless. Pathogenicity tests were repeated three times. Similar disease symptoms and re-isolation of A. alternata fulfilled Koch's postulates. To confirm the fungal identification, the rDNA of the internal transcribed spacer region in three isolates were amplified using primers ITS1 and ITS4 (1) and sequenced. The nucleotide sequence of the ITS region was submitted to GenBank under accession KJ829535 and showed 100% sequence identity with the strain A. alternata LPSC 1187 (KF753947.1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a leaf spot of Philodendron 'con-go' by A. alternate in China. Reference: (1) T. J. White et al. PCR Protocols: A Guide to Methods and Applications. M. Abstract
Emerging evidence suggests that a common functional polymorphism, rs4444903 (A>G), in the EGF gene might impact an individual's susceptibility to liver cancer; however, individually published results are inconclusive. This meta-analysis aimed to derive a more precise estimation of the relationship between the EGF rs4444903 polymorphism and liver cancer risk. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CBM databases from inception through May 1st, 2013. Seven case-control studies were included with a total of 1408 liver cancer cases and 1343 healthy controls. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Our meta-analysis results indicated that the G variant of the rs4444903 polymorphism might be associated with an increased risk of liver cancer (G allele vs A allele: OR = 1.25, 95%CI = 1.01-1.56, P = 0.040; GG + AG vs AA: OR = 1.65, 95%CI = 1.27-2.15, P < 0.001; GG vs AA: OR = 1.77, 95%CI = 1.34-2.35, P < 0.001). Further subgroup analysis by ethnicity also showed significant associations between the G variant of the rs4444903 polymorphism and an increased risk of liver cancer among Asian, Caucasian, and African populations. No publication bias was detected in this meta-analysis. In conclusion, the current meta-analysis suggests that the G variant of the rs4444903 polymorphism may increase the risk of liver cancer. The EGF rs4444903 (A>G) polymorphism can be useful as a biomarker in predicting the development of liver cancer.

Abstract
Radermachera sinica is widely planted as an ornamental plant in homes, offices, and malls in China. A leaf spot of R. sinica occurred in Luoyang, China, from 2013 to 2014. Lesions mostly occurred in wounds and were irregular with light brown centers and purple borders. One or more lesions on a leaf sometimes covered the entire blade. Eighty plants were surveyed in Luoyang, with disease incidence of 17%. Five millimeter pieces from the borders of lesions were surface-disinfected with 75% ethanol for 30 s, 1% sodium hypochlorite for 5 min, washed three times in sterilized distilled water, placed on nutrient agar (NA) medium at 25°C in darkness, and incubated for 24 to 48 h. Four white, round, smooth, and shiny colonies were selected for further identification. All strains were gram-positive, aerobic rods with many peritrichous flagella, and could grow in medium containing 5% NaCl. The strains were positive for catalase, starch hydrolysis, liquefaction of gelatin, reduction of nitrate, acid production from glucose, mannitol, maltose, lactose, xylose, and pectinose. The strains were positive for phenylalanine deaminase, decomposition of tyrosine, and utilization of citrate. The strains were identified by biochemical tests as Bacillus megaterium (1). To confirm pathogenicity, the strains were grown on NA for 48 h and suspended in sterile distilled water to produce a suspension with a final concentration of 108 CFU/ml. Healthy leaves of biennial R. sinica plants were sterilized with 75% ethanol and washed three times with sterilized distilled water. Fresh wounds were made with a sterile needle on the healthy leaves. Each of four strains was tested by spray inoculation with a bacterial suspension on three leaves. Sterile distilled water was used as negative control. Plants were enclosed in plastic bags and placed in a growth chamber at 28°C with 80% relative humidity. After 5 days, water-soaked lesions were observed. Two weeks later, lesions 4 mm in diameter turned light brown with purple borders, and most of lesions occurred in puncture wounds. Symptoms similar to those observed on field plants developed on all inoculated leaves, while no symptoms appeared on the control leaves. B. megaterium was re-isolated from the lesions of inoculated leaves, but not from the control leaves. To confirm the bacterial identification, PCR was performed on the 16S rDNA gene with P1/P2 (P1: CAGAGTTTGATCCTGGCT, P2: AGGAGGTGATCCAGCCGCA) (2) and 1,463 bp of the 16S rDNA gene (GenBank Accession No. KJ789369) showed 100% sequence identity to B. megaterium DSM 319 (NC_014103.1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a leaf spot of R. sinica caused by B. megaterium in China as well as anywhere in the world. References: (1) P. Vos et al. Abstract
The Alpha subunit of the stimulatory guanine nucleotide-binding protein (GNAS) is a complex imprinted gene. The major product of the GNAS gene is the α-subunit of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein (Gas), which plays a key role in multiple signal transduction pathways. Gas is required for the production of the receptor-stimulated intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). It has been demonstrated that an increase in the concentration of the intracellular second messenger cAMP promotes apoptosis in different tumor entities. Mutations of GNAS have also been identified in many tumors. This study aimed to investigate the expression pattern and the apoptosis effect in fibroblast cells for porcine GNAS. The results show that GNAS mRNA was detected in a wide range of tissues, especially in the longissimus dorsi muscle and thyroid gland. The developmental pattern of GNAS mRNA in the thyroid gland of Jinhua pigs was then examined; however, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) among any of the stages. GNAS gene expression was relatively stable in the thyroid gland during the entire growth and development process. The developmental pattern of GNAS mRNA in the longissimus dorsi muscle was significantly different among the various developmental stages (P < 0.01). GNAS mRNA was strongly expressed at 60 days, 90 days, and 150 days after birth, whereas the expression level was very low during the embryo stages. Target RNA interference of GNAS in porcine fibroblast cells leads to lower mRNA expression of Bcl-2, Fas, and Caspase-3, which are recognized as apoptosis related markers.

Abstract
Leymus mollis (Trin.) Pilger (NsNsXmXm, 2n = 28), a wild relative of common wheat, possesses many traits that are potentially valuable for wheat improvement. In order to exploit and utilize the useful genes of L. mollis, we developed a multiple alien substitution line, 10DM50, from the progenies of octoploid Tritileymus M842-16 x Triticum durum cv. D4286. Genomic in situ hybridization analysis of mitosis and meiosis (metaphase I), using labeled total DNA of Psathyrostachys huashanica as probe, showed that the substitution line 10DM50 was a cytogenetically stable alien substitution line with 36 chromosomes from wheat and three pairs of Ns genome chromosomes from L. mollis. Simple sequence repeat analysis showed that the chromosomes 3D, 6D, and 7D were absent in 10DM50. Expressed sequence tag-sequence tagged sites analysis showed that new chromatin from 3Ns, 6Ns, and 7Ns of L. mollis were detected in 10DM50. We deduced that the substitution line 10DM50 was a multiple alien substitution line with the 3D, 6D, and 7D chromosomes replaced by 3Ns, 6Ns, and 7Ns from L. mollis. 10DM50 showed high resistance to leaf rust and significantly improved spike length, spikes per plant, and kernels per spike, which are correlated with higher wheat yield. These results suggest that line 10DM50 could be used as intermediate material for transferring desirable traits from L. mollis into common wheat in breeding programs.

Abstract
An electrostatic coherent mode near the electron diamagnetic frequency (20-90 kHz) is observed in the steep-gradient pedestal region of long pulse H-mode plasmas in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, using a newly developed dual gas-puff-imaging system and diamond-coated reciprocating probes. The mode propagates in the electron diamagnetic direction in the plasma frame with poloidal wavelength of ∼8 cm. The mode drives a significant outflow of particles and heat as measured directly with the probes, thus greatly facilitating long pulse H-mode sustainment. This mode shows the nature of dissipative trapped electron mode, as evidenced by gyrokinetic turbulence simulations.

Abstract
In this study, the cDNA coding serum transferrin (stf) of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (mastf) was cloned. mastf cDNA is composed of 2326 bp with a 2007 bp open reading frame encoding 668 amino acids. The deduced Mastf protein consists of a signal peptide, two lobes (N and C-lobes) and signature motifs of transferrin (Tf) family. The results of tissue distribution indicated that mastf mRNA was predominantly expressed in the liver. The results indicate that the mastf expression increased significantly in liver, blood, spleen and head kidney after the challenge with Aeromonas sobria, acting as a positive acute protein, suggesting that mastf is related to the immune response. The cloning and expression analysis of mastf further demonstrates the evolutionary conservation of Stf and immune function in vertebrates.

Abstract
Maize with high grain protein and oil contents offers great advantages for human food and animal feed. In this study, grain protein contents of 282 and 263 F7:8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of 2 crosses were evaluated in 4 environments within and between populations. The RILs were developed from crosses between an inbred high-oil maize line and 2 normal dent inbred maize lines. A total of 16 single-population QTLs and 19 joint-population QTLs were identified for protein content, and 21 QTLs were detected for protein-oil in each of the 4 environments tested and in combination. Most of the QTLs for protein content were greatly influenced by variation among populations and environments. Seven QTLs showed generational consistency compared with QTLs detected in the 2 F2:3 populations. However, 7 and 6 QTLs were detected in only the RIL and F2:3 populations, respectively. Protein and protein-oil QTLs with the same parental effects were detected at bins 3.03-3.05, 5.04-5.06, 6.03-6.05, 8.03-8.04, and 8.04-8.06, demonstrating that tightly linked and/or pleiotropic QTLs are controlling both traits at these bins. Four single-population QTLs and 11 joint-population QTLs identified at bins 3.02-3.03, 3.05, 7.01, 8.02, 8.03, 8.04-8.05, 8.05, 9.03, and 9.05 with intervals <5 cM could be used in marker-assisted selection. Along with the previously detected QTLs qPRO1-8-1 and qPRO1-5-1 at bins 8.03-8.04 and 5.02-5.04, the QTLs detected herein could be used to develop near isogenic lines and chromosome segment substitution lines in future studies.

Abstract
Fanconi anemia complementation group F protein (FANCF) is a key factor, which
maintains the function of FA/BRCA, a DNA damage response pathway. However, the
functional role of FANCF in breast cancer has not been elucidated. We performed a
specific FANCF-shRNA knockdown of endogenous FANCF in vitro. Cell
viability was measured with a CCK-8 assay. DNA damage was assessed with an alkaline
comet assay. Apoptosis, cell cycle, and drug accumulation were measured by flow
cytometry. The expression levels of protein were determined by Western blot using
specific antibodies. Based on these results, we used cell migration and invasion
assays to demonstrate a crucial role for FANCF in those processes. FANCF shRNA
effectively inhibited expression of FANCF. We found that proliferation of FANCF
knockdown breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-435S) was significantly inhibited,
with cell cycle arrest in the S phase, induction of apoptosis, and DNA fragmentation.
Inhibition of FANCF also resulted in decreased cell migration and invasion. In
addition, FANCF knockdown enhanced sensitivity to doxorubicin in breast cancer cells.
These results suggest that FANCF may be a potential target for molecular, therapeutic
intervention in breast cancer.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of Bacillus licheniformis on laying performance, egg quality, antioxidant enzyme activities, and intestinal barrier function of laying hens. Hy-Line Variety W-36 hens (n = 540; 28 wk of age) were randomized into 6 groups, each group with 6 replications (n = 15). The control group received the basal diet formulated with maize and soybean meal. The treatment groups received the same basal diets supplemented with 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.09% Bacillus licheniformis powder (2 × 10(10) cfu/g) for an 8-wk trial. The results showed that dietary supplementation with 0.01 and 0.03% B. licheniformis significantly increased egg production and egg mass. However, no significant differences were observed in egg weight, feed consumption, and feed conversion efficiency among the 6 groups. Supplementation with different levels of B. licheniformis was found to be effective in improvement of egg quality by increasing egg shell thickness and strength. Compared with control, d-lactate content, diamine oxidase activity, and adrenocorticotropic hormone level in serum decreased significantly, and the level of estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone increased significantly in plasma of all the experimental groups. Dietary supplementation with B. licheniformis increased the intestinal villus height and reduced the crypt depth. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of B. licheniformis could improve laying performance and egg quality significantly in a dose-dependent manner by decreasing the stress response, upregulating the growth hormone, and improving intestinal health.

Abstract
Sansevieria trifasciata originates from tropical West Africa. It is widely planted as a potted ornamental in China for improving indoor air quality (1). In February 2011, leaves of S. trifasciata plants in an ornamental market of Anle, Luoyang City, China, were observed with sunken brown lesions up to 20 mm in diameter, and with black pycnidia present in the lesions. One hundred potted plants were examined, with disease incidence at 20%. The symptomatic leaves affected the ornamental value of the plants. A section of leaf tissue from the periphery of two lesions from a plant was cut into 1 cm2 pieces, soaked in 70% ethanol for 30 s, sterilized with 0.1% HgCl2 for 2 min, then washed five times in sterilized distilled water. The pieces were incubated at 28°C on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Colonies of two isolates were brown with submerged hyphae, and aerial mycelium was rare. Abundant and scattered pycnidia were reniform, dark brown, and 200 to 350 × 100 to 250 μm. There were two types of setae on the pycnidia: 1) dark brown setae with inward curved tops, and 2) straight, brown setae. Conidia were hyaline, unicellular, cylindrical, and 3.75 to 6.25 × 1.25 to 2.50 μm. Morphological characteristics suggested the two fungal isolates were a Chaetomella sp. To confirm pathogenicity, six mature leaves of a potted S. trifasciata plant were wounded with a sterile pin after wiping each leaf surface with 70% ethanol and washing each leaf with sterilized distilled water three times. A 0.5 cm mycelial disk cut from the margin of a 5-day-old colony on a PDA plate was placed on each pin-wounded leaf, ensuring that the mycelium was in contact with the wound. Non-colonized PDA discs were placed on pin-wounded leaves as the control treatment. Each of two fungal isolates was inoculated on two leaves, and the control treatment was done similarly on two leaves. The inoculated plant was placed in a growth chamber at 28°C with 80% relative humidity. After 7 days, inoculated leaves produced brown lesions with black pycnidia, but no symptoms developed on the control leaves. A Chaetomella sp. was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated leaves, but not from the control leaves. An additional two potted plants were inoculated using the same methods as replications of the experiment, with identical results. To confirm the fungal identification, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of the two isolates was amplified using primers ITS1 and ITS4 (2) and sequenced. The sequences were identical (GenBank Accession No. KC515097) and exhibited 99% nucleotide identity to the ITS sequence of an isolate of Chaetomella sp. in GenBank (AJ301961). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a leaf spot of S. trifasciata caused by Chaetomella sp. in China as well as anywhere in the world. References: (1) X. Z. Guo et al. Abstract
We report new limits on a spin-independent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon interaction cross section using 39.5 kg days of data taken with a p-type point-contact germanium detector of 840 g fiducial mass at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. Crucial to this study is the understanding of the selection procedures and, in particular, the bulk-surface events differentiation at the sub-keV range. The signal-retaining and background-rejecting efficiencies were measured with calibration gamma sources and a novel n-type point-contact germanium detector. Part of the parameter space in the cross section versus WIMP-mass implied by various experiments is probed and excluded.

Abstract
1. The relationship of polymorphisms in the Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R) and Agouti Signalling Protein (ASIP) genes with plumage colour in Japanese quail was investigated by cloning and sequencing the entire coding regions from black, white and maroon Japanese quail embryos at 12 d of incubation. 2. Three SNPs were identified in the MC1R coding region by multiple alignment of sequences from individuals with different plumage colours. A missense C/T mutation located at 169 bp within the Open Reading Frame caused a Ile57Val mutation in the amino acid sequence, and had a significant relationship with the black colour. 3. The expression of MC1R was higher in black plumage quails than that in maroon plumage quails, whereas the expression of ASIP was higher in maroon plumage quails than that in black plumage quails. 4. It is concluded that the black plumage colour in Japanese quails may be caused by either increased production of MC1R or decreased production of ASIP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the oral microbial diversity of healthy Chinese Han children. METHODS Dental plaques were sampled from the oral cavity of ten healthy Chinese Han children. The oral microbiome was examined using the 16S rRNA-based Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray. The microbial diversity and similarity were analyzed using the Chao-Jaccard similarity index. RESULTS A total of 112 species, which belonged to nine bacterial phyla and 41 genera, were detected. Each individual harbored an average of 54.1 microbial species (ranging from 37 to 69) and 26.2 genera (ranging from 21 to 31), with interindividual variations both at the species and genus level. Thirteen genera were conserved among all individuals. The Chao-Jaccard similarity index averages, at the genus and species level, were 0.642 (ranging from 0.485 to 0.871) and 0.506 (ranging from 0.338 to 0.676), respectively, suggesting that the healthy oral community was more conserved at the genus level than at the species level. CONCLUSION Although there was interindividual variation in the oral microflora, some bacterial genera were conserved among individuals, supporting the existence of a core microbiome in the oral cavity of healthy Chinese Han children.

Abstract
Objective: This study investigated the safety and therapeutic efficacy of Di Huang Yin Zi (DHYZ), a traditional Chinese decoction used to treat neurological disorders, in spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: In this doubleblind, placebo-controlled study, patients with traumatic SCI and American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment grades B - D were randomized to receive DHYZ ( n = 30) or placebo ( n = 30) for 12 weeks. Both groups also received rehabilitation therapy during the study period. Motor and sensory function and activities of daily living (ADL) were assessed before treatment and at 4-week intervals. Results: Significantly more patients in the DHYZ group showed an improved ASIA impairment grade during the treatment period (32.1%) compared with the placebo group (10.3%), and scores for sensory and motor function and ADL at the end of the treatment period were significantly higher in the DHYZ group than in the placebo group. No serious side-effects were reported. Conclusions: DHYZ was found to improve neurological function in patients with SCI and may be an effective adjuvant therapy to enhance functional recovery.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate feed intake, ADG, carcass quality, eating behavior, and blood metabolites in feedlot beef steers fed diets that varied in proportion of wheat dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) replacing barley grain or barley silage. Two hundred crossbred steers (BW = 489 ± 30 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly allotted to 20 pens (5 pens per treatment). Steers were fed 1 of 4 diets: control without DDGS (CON), 25% (25DDGS), 30% (30DDGS), or 35% (35DDGS) wheat DDGS (DM basis). The CON diet consisted of 15% barley silage and 85% barley-based concentrate; the 3 wheat DDGS diets were formulated by substituting 20% barley grain and 5, 10, or 15% silage, respectively, with 25, 30, or 35% wheat DDGS so that the 35DDGS diet contained no silage. The diets were formulated such that wheat DDGS was substituted for both barley grain and barley silage to evaluate whether wheat DDGS can be fed as a source of both energy and fiber in feedlot finishing diets. Dry matter intake of steers fed 25DDGS was greater (P < 0.01), but final BW, ADG, and G:F were not different compared with steers fed CON diet. Carcass characteristics and liver abscess score were not different between CON and 25DDGS. Steers fed 25DDGS had longer eating time (min/d; P < 0.01), greater meal frequency (P < 0.04), but a slower eating rate (P < 0.04). Replacing barley silage with increasing amounts of wheat DDGS (from 25DDGS to 35DDGS) linearly reduced (P < 0.01) DMI. Final BW, ADG, and G:F were not affected by increasing amounts of wheat DDGS. Carcass traits were not different, whereas liver abscess scores linearly (P < 0.01) increased as more barley silage was replaced by wheat DDGS. Eating time (min/d) and duration of each meal linearly (P < 0.02) decreased, whereas eating rate (min/g of DM) linearly (P < 0.01) increased with increasing replacement of barley silage. Blood urea N was doubled (P < 0.01) compared with CON by inclusion of wheat DDGS. Results indicate that wheat DDGS can be used effectively in feedlot diets, decreasing the need for barley grain or silage without negatively affecting growth performance and carcass characteristics. A reduction in the amount of roughage required to maintain growth performance is a potential advantage in feedlot operations because forage is costly and often of limited availability. Thus, DDGS can be a possible alternative as long as they are available and cost effective; however, increased incidence of liver abscess and increased N content of manure need to be considered when greater amounts of wheat DDGS are included in finishing diets.
