Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the value of plasma intermedin (IMD) in assessing severity and treatment efficacy of septic shock. MATERIAL AND METHODS Healthy male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were chosen and divided into a normal control group (n=15) and a shock model group (n=27) that received intravenous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Then, 3 specimens were taken from each group. The shock model group rats were divided into an LPS group and a treatment group with 12 rats each. The treatment group received intravenous injection of compound sodium lactate solution. Plasma IMD and IMD1-47 mRNA expressions were compared and analyzed. RESULTS Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was lower while white blood cell count and TNF-α were higher in the shock model group than in the normal control group (P<0.05). After 10 h and 20 h, the treatment group had lower plasma IMD and IMD1-47 mRNA expressions compared with the LPS group (P<0.05). Plasma IMD and IMD1-47 mRNA expressions in the LPS group after 20 h were significantly higher than after 10 h (P<0.05). IMD was positively correlated with interleukins (IL-3, IL-6, and IL-8), white blood cell count, and body temperature (all P<0.05), but were negatively correlated with systolic pressure (r=-0.8474, P=0.0040). CONCLUSIONS Plasma IMD level can effectively reflect the severity of septic shock and can be used as an important indicator of septic shock treatment effectiveness.

Abstract
PURPOSE Head and neck tumors that involve the craniomaxillofacial region are classified as stage IVb disease and are clinically challenging. In this study, the outcomes of craniofacial resection and craniofacial reconstruction in patients with recurrent malignant tumors involving the craniomaxillofacial region were evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective observational study was conducted from January 2008 to August 2015. Data collected for each patient included age, gender, tumor site, initial treatment, craniofacial resection, reconstruction flaps and complications after craniofacial resection, adjuvant treatment, and reported outcomes of craniofacial resection and craniofacial reconstruction. The χ2 test in SPSS was used to analyze the data. RESULTS Twenty-four patients with recurrent malignant tumors involving the craniomaxillofacial region were identified who had undergone craniofacial resection at the Center of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery of Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou, Guangdong, China). The study population was comprised of 24 patients (15 men and 9 women; age range, 21 to 73 yr) with recurrent tumors (58.3% with squamous cell carcinoma [SCC], 41.7% with sarcoma [SA]) involving the craniomaxillofacial region who underwent craniofacial resection. Craniofacial resection consisted of orbital exenteration and maxillotomy; anterior skull base surgery, facial resection, and mandibulotomy; or ipsilateral radical neck dissection. The resultant craniomaxillofacial defects were reconstructed using extended vertical lower trapezius island myocutaneous flaps (TIMFs), temporalis myofascial flaps, or submental flaps. All patients with recurrent malignant tumor involving the craniomaxillofacial region underwent gross total resection of the tumor; 22 patients underwent craniofacial reconstruction. There were no major surgical complications. Minor flap failure and wound dehiscence in the donor site occurred in 4 patients. The follow-up period ranged from 8 to 36 months. Seven patients in the SCC group and 7 in the SA group were alive with no evidence of disease (AND), 3 in the SCC group and 2 in the SA group were alive with disease (AWD), and 4 in the SCC and 1 in the SA group died of the disease (DOD) after local recurrence or distant metastases at 8 to 18 months. There were no statistical differences among the AND, AWD, and DOD groups. CONCLUSIONS Craniofacial resection remains an effective salvage treatment for patients with recurrent SCC and SA involving the craniomaxillofacial region. The extended vertical lower TIMF is a large, simple, and reliable flap for reconstructing major defects after a craniofacial resection.

Abstract
This study investigated the treatment performance for aging leachate containing refractory organic pollutants by TiO2-organobentonite photocatalyst combined with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) coagulant. TiO2 was immobilized on organobentonite granules as a supporter modified by cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). The prepared catalysts were characterized by ESEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis, which showed that TiO2-organobentonite catalyst had uniform coating of TiO2 on support. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH3-N removal rates by combination of TiO2-CTAC2.0 photocatalysis and PAC coagulation were evaluated, optimized, and compared to that by either treatment alone, with respect to TiO2-CTAC2.0 dose, photocatalytic contact time, pH, and PAC dose. Furthermore, higher removal rates (COD 80 %; NH3-N 46 %) were achieved by response surface methodology (RSM) when TiO2-CTAC2.0 photocatalysis was followed by PAC coagulation at optimized conditions. The optimized experimental conditions were TiO2-CTAC2.0 dosage of 5.09 g/L, at pH 5.53, photocatalytic contact time for 180 min, and PAC dosage of 1062 mg/L.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the results of aortic valve replacement through anterolateral minithoracotomy (RT) and partial upper hemisternotomy (PS) approaches. METHODS This was a retrospective, observational, cohort study of collected data on 297 patients undergoing isolated primary aortic valve replacement between July 2009 and March 2016 at Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. There were 174 male and 123 female patients, aging from 15 to 73 years with a mean age of (51±13) years. Of these, 132 were performed through right RT and 165 through PS. Outcomes of the two groups were compared by t test, t' test, rank-sum test and χ(2) test, respectively. RESULTS The overall in-hospital mortality was 1.7% (5/297), with no difference between the 2 groups (3.0%, 4/132 vs. 0.6%, 1/165, P=0.175 ). Patients in the RT group had longer cardiopulmonary bypass ((92±27) minutes vs. (76±18) minutes, t'=5.848, P=0.000)and crossclamping ((56±21) minutes vs. (43±12) minutes, t'=6.333, P=0.000)times. Three patients in the RT group and two patients required intraoperative conversion. Patients by way of RT was associated with a lower incidence of blood transfusions (20.4% vs. 39.4%, χ(2)=12.303, P=0.001) and less drainage (250 (307) ml vs. 570 (370) ml, Z=8.161, P=0.000). In addition, patients in RT group had a shorter postoperative length of stay (5(4) days vs. 9(10) days, Z=4.548, P=0.000). CONCLUSIONS Aortic valve replacement via RT and PS are both safe and feasible. The approach through PS is associated with better exposure, more extensive indication for surgery, and more suitable to heart centers which intend to carry out miminally invasive aortic valve replacement. While, for an experienced surgeon, the approach through right RT is worthy of clinical selective application for patients concern more about good cosmetic result, and patients have faster recovery by avoid sternotomy through RT approach.

Abstract
Compelling evidence has indicated that dysregulated glucose metabolism links Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) via glucose metabolic products. Nevertheless, because of the lack of appropriate animal models, whether chronic hyperglycemia worsens AD pathologies in vivo remains to be confirmed. Here, we crossed diabetic mice (Pdx1+/− mice) with Alzheimer mice (APP/PS1 transgenic mice) to generate Pdx1+/−/APP/PS1. We identified robust increases in tau phosphorylation, the loss of the synaptic spine protein, amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and plaque formation associated with increased microglial and astrocyte activation proliferation, which lead to exacerbated memory and cognition deficits. More importantly, we also observed increased glucose intolerance accompanied by Pdx1 reduction, the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and the activation of the receptor for AGEs (RAGE) signaling pathways during AD progression; these changes are thought to contribute to the processing of Aβ precursor proteins and result in increased Aβ generation and decreased Aβ degradation. Protein glycation, increased oxidative stress and inflammation via hyperglycemia are the primary mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of AD. These results indicate the pathological relationship between these diseases and provide novel insights suggesting that glycemic control may be beneficial for decreasing the incidence of AD in diabetic patients and delaying AD progression.

Abstract
Performance of co-digesters, treated of sewage sludge (SS) with fat, oil and grease (FOG), were conducted semi-continuously in two mesophilic reactors over 180days. Compared with SS mono-digestion, biogas production and TS removal efficiency of co-digestion were significantly enhanced up to 35% and 26% by adding upper limit FOG (60% on VS). Enhancement in co-digestion performance was also stimulated by the release of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which was increased 40% in both loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) than that of mono-digester. Based on high-throughput sequencing (HTS), analysis of microbial 16S rRNA gene comprehensively revealed the dynamic change of microbial community. Results showed that both bacterial and archaeal undergone an apparent succession with FOG addition, and large amount of consortium like Methanosaeta and N09 were involved in the process. Redundancy analysis showed the acetoclastic genera Methanosaeta distinctly related with biogas production and EPS degradation.

Abstract
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in mismatch repair genes, especially in the MLH1 gene, are closely associated with susceptibility to hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. However, few relevant findings are available regarding the association between sporadic colorectal cancer (SCRC) and SNPs of MLH1 in Chinese patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe the pathogenic association between three important MLH1 polymorphisms and SCRC in the Chinese population. Peripheral blood samples from 156 SCRC patients and 311 healthy controls were collected. DNA was purified from peripheral blood, and the V384D, R217C, and I219V polymorphisms were evaluated using high-resolution melting analysis and direct sequencing. The association between the three important MLH1 polymorphisms and clinical pathological features of the SCRC patients was analyzed. In addition, PMS2-MLH1 protein interactions were determined by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) to determine the protein functional alteration induced by these SNPs. Among the three polymorphisms, V384D was significantly associated with the risk of SCRC (OR = 31.36, P < 0.0001). The allele frequencies were 4.81 and 0.16% in the SCRC group. No association was found between SCRC and R217C, or between SCRC and I219V. Moreover, the allele frequency of R217C was significantly higher in the SCRC patients younger than 60 years than in those older than 60 years. Co-IP showed that the MLH1 R217C, V384D, and I219V variants had relative binding abilities with PMS2 of 0.59, 0.70, and 0.80, respectively, compared with the wild-type. These findings suggest that MLH1 V384D could be a promising genetic marker for susceptibility to SCRC.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that an abnormal accumulation of iron in the substantia nigra (SN) is one of the defining characteristics of Parkinson's disease (PD). Accordingly, the potential neuroprotection of Fe chelators is widely acknowledged for the treatment of PD. Although desferrioxamine (DFO), an iron chelator widely used in clinical settings, has been reported to improve motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal survival in animal models of PD, DFO has poor penetration to cross the blood-brain barrier and elicits side effects. We evaluated whether an intranasal administration of DFO improves the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal axis and investigated the molecular mechanisms of intranasal DFO treatment in preventing MPTP-induced neurodegeneration. Treatment with DFO efficiently alleviated behavioral deficits, increased the survival of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neurons, and decreased the action of astrocytes in the SN and striatum in an MPTP-induced PD mouse model. Interestingly, we found that DFO up-regulated the expression of HIF-1α protein, TH, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and growth associated protein 43 (GAP43) and down-regulated the expression of α-synuclein, divalent metal transporter with iron-responsive element (DMT1+IRE), and transferrin receptor (TFR). This was accompanied by a decrease in iron-positive cells in the SN and striatum of the DFO-treated group. We further revealed that DFO treatment significantly inhibited the MPTP-induced phosphorylation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and differentially enhanced the phosphorylation of extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/P38 kinase. Additionally, the effects of DFO on increasing the Bcl-2/Bax ratio were further validated in vitro and in vivo. In SH-SY5Y cells, the DFO-mediated up-regulation of HIF-1α occurred via the activation of the ERK and P38MAPK signaling pathway. Collectively, the present data suggest that intranasal DFO treatment is effective in reversing MPTP-induced brain abnormalities and that HIF-1-pathway activation is a potential therapy target for the attenuation of neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are promising technologies for energy and product recovery coupled with wastewater treatment, and the core microbial community in electrochemically active biofilm in BESs remains controversy. In the present study, 7 anodic communities from 6 bioelectrochemical systems in 4 labs in southeast, north and south-central of China are explored by 454 pyrosequencing. A total of 251,225 effective sequences are obtained for 7 electrochemically active biofilm samples at 3% cutoff level. While Alpha-, Beta-, and Gamma-proteobacteria are the most abundant classes (averaging 16.0-17.7%), Bacteroidia and Clostridia are the two sub-dominant and commonly shared classes. Six commonly shared genera i.e., Azospira, Azospirillum, Acinetobacter, Bacteroides, Geobacter, Pseudomonas, and Rhodopseudomonas dominate the electrochemically active communities and are defined as core genera. A total of 25 OTUs with average relative abundance >0.5% were selected and designated as core OTUs, and some species relating to these OTUs have been reported electrochemically active. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry tests show that two strains from Acinetobacter guillouiae and Stappia indica, bacteria relate to two core OTUs, are electrochemically active. Using randomly selected bioelectrochemical systems, the study has presented extremely diverse bacterial communities in anodic biofilms, though, we still can suggest some potentially microbes for investigating the electrochemical mechanisms in bioelectrochemical systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) for complicated wounds has been extensively studied, it is rarely used in cases involving a submandibular fistula due to radiation-induced osteoradionecrosis of the mandible. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of NPWT for submandibular fistulas after reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Nine patients with submandibular fistulas after reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis treated with NPWT between 2011 and 2014 were included in the study. The wound healing was documented. RESULTS The NPWT device was removed postoperatively between days 7 and 12 (mean duration, 9.6 days). The wound bed was filled with healthy granulation tissue, and successful healing by second intention was observed in all patients within 2 weeks. No complications were observed. The follow-up ranged from 4 to 27 months (mean, 18 months); the fistulas exhibited excellent healing, and no recurrence or infection was observed. CONCLUSIONS NPWT is a safe, effective technique for managing submandibular fistulas after reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The natural history of prostate cancer is highly variable and difficult to predict accurately. Better markers are needed to guide management and avoid unnecessary treatment. In this study, we validate the prognostic value of a cell cycle progression score (CCP score) independently and in a prespecified linear combination with standard clinical variables, that is, a clinical-cell-cycle-risk (CCR) score. METHODS Paraffin sections from 761 men with clinically localized prostate cancer diagnosed by needle biopsy and managed conservatively in the United Kingdom, mostly between 2000 and 2003. The primary end point was prostate cancer death. Clinical variables consisted of centrally reviewed Gleason score, baseline PSA level, age, clinical stage, and extent of disease; these were combined into a single predefined risk assessment (CAPRA) score. Full data were available for 585 men who formed a fully independent validation cohort. RESULTS In univariate analysis, the CCP score hazard ratio was 2.08 (95% CI (1.76, 2.46), P<10(-13)) for one unit change of the score. In multivariate analysis including CAPRA, the CCP score hazard ratio was 1.76 (95% CI (1.44, 2.14), P<10(-6)). The predefined CCR score was highly predictive, hazard ratio 2.17 (95% CI (1.83, 2.57), χ(2)=89.0, P<10(-20)) and captured virtually all available prognostic information. CONCLUSIONS The CCP score provides significant pretreatment prognostic information that cannot be provided by clinical variables and is useful for determining which patients can be safely managed conservatively, avoiding radical treatment.

Abstract
The widely recognized neuroprotective effect of iron chelators is contributed by their ability to prevent reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation via the Fenton reaction, which sequesters redox-active Fe. An additional neuroprotective mechanism of iron-chelating compounds is to regulate the transcriptional activator hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). In the present study, we observed that intranasal administration of deferoxamine decreased beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and rescued synapse loss in the brain of Aβ precursor protein and presenilin-1 (APP/PS1) double transgenic mice. We found that deferoxamine (DFO) up-regulated HIF-1α mRNA expression and its protein level, and further induced the proteins that are encoded from HIF-1-adaptive genes, including transferrin receptor (TFR), divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The effects of DFO on the induction and stabilization of HIF-1α were further confirmed in vitro. This was accompanied by a decrease of Fe in the CA3 region of the hippocampus. Western blotting studies revealed that DFO differentially enhanced the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/P38 kinase in vitro and in vivo. The results suggest that the DFO may up-regulate several HIF-1-dependent neuroprotective-adaptive genes in AD via activating P38/HIF-1α pathway, which may serve as important therapeutic targets to the disease.

Abstract
Few studies have been conducted to explore the community composition in denitrifying biocathode. Herein, the microbial communities of denitrifying biocathodes yielding current of 1 mA (reactor C1) and 1.5 mA (reactor C2) were characterized by 454 pyrosequencing. The nitrate removal efficiencies in C1 and C2 were about 93 and 85%, respectively. The optimization of data generated high-quality sequences of 18509 in C1 and 14857 in C2. Proteobacteria was the predominant phylum, and Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Planctomycetes were the subdominant groups. Classes of Alphaproteobacteria, Anaerolineae, and Phycisphaerae may benefit the performance of current production and nitrate removal. Twenty-nine dominant operational taxonomic units (OTUs) accounted for 64 and 65% of sequences in C1 and C2, respectively. A denitrifying pathway was constructed based on the phylogenetic analysis and function inferring of the dominant OTUs. Obviously, the 454 pyrosequencing provided a high-resolution profile of bacteria community in denitrifying biocathode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lip mucous membrane venous malformations are common benign lesions in infants. This clinical study evaluates the efficacy and safety of liquid nitrogen cryotherapy used to treat this condition. METHODS A total of 84 pediatric patients undergoing liquid nitrogen cryotherapy for venous malformations involving the lips were reviewed, with 45 males and 39 females treated. The overall median age at mucous membrane venous malformation diagnosis was 5.6 months (range 2-18 months). The venous malformations involved the vermilion of the lower lip in 44 cases, the vermilion of the upper lip in 31 cases, and both vermilions in 9 cases. RESULTS No complications due to anesthesia occurred. After a follow-up period of 2-38 months (mean 25 months), 65 lesions (77.4 %) were completely involuted, 14 lesions (16.7 %) were mostly involuted, and 5 lesions (5.9 %) were partially involuted; no lesions showed a minor amount of involution. CONCLUSIONS Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy is an effective, simple, and safe management tool for mucous membrane venous malformations of the lip in infants.

Abstract
In this study, a novel algal biofilm membrane photobioreactor (BMPBR) equipped with solid carriers and submerged membrane module was developed for attached growth of Chlorella vulgaris and secondary effluent treatment. The volumetric microalgae production achieved in BMPBR was 0.072 g L(-1) d(-1), which was 1.44-fold larger than that in suspended growth membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Furthermore, 72.4% of the total produced algal biomass was immobilized as algal biofilm in BMPBR. Advanced nutrients removal from secondary effluent was achieved both in BMPBR and MPBR, with average reduction of about 85% for PO4(3-)-P in the stable stage. Additionally, BMPBR showed better nitrogen removal performance than MPBR due to its higher algal biomass productivity. Moreover, with the filtration effect of the submerged membrane module in the reactor, suspended microalgae could be completely isolated from the effluent and a low average SS concentration of 0.28 mg L(-1) was achieved in the effluent of BMPBR.

Abstract
Foaming pretreatment has long been recognized to promote drying materials with sticky and viscous behaviors. A novel approach, CaO addition followed by appropriate mechanical whipping, was employed for the foaming of dewatered sludge at a moisture content of 80-85%. In the convective drying, the foamed sludge at 0.70 g/mL had the best drying performance at any given temperature, which saved 35-41% drying time for reaching 20% moisture content compared with the non-foamed sludge. Considering the maximum foaming efficiency, the optimal CaO addition was found at 2.0 wt%. For a better understanding of the foaming mechanisms, the foamability of sludge processed with other pretreatment methods, including NaOH addition (0-3.0 wt%) and heating application (60-120 °C), were investigated while continuously whipping. Their recovered supernatant phases were characterized by pH, surface tension, soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD), protein concentration, polysaccharide concentration and spectra of excitation-emission matrices (EEM). These comparative studies indicated that the sludge foaming was mainly derived from the decreased surface tension by the surfactants and the promoted foam persistence by the protein derived compounds. Further, a comprehensive analysis of the sludge drying characteristics was performed including the surface moisture evaporation, the effective moisture diffusivity and the micromorphology of dried sludge. The results indicated that the drying advantages of foamed sludge were mainly attributed to the larger evaporation surface in a limited drying area and the more active moisture capillary movement through the liquid films, which resulted in longer constant evaporation rate periods and better effective moisture diffusivity, respectively.

Abstract
Sepsis is a complex inflammatory response to infection, associating with dramatic metabolic disorders. Although the mechanisms of immune response during sepsis have been largely clarified, current studies rarely pay attention to the disordered protein metabolism in sepsis. In this study, L6 rat skeletal muscle cells treated with serum from septic rats were used as an in vitro model for sepsis-like condition in skeletal muscle. We found that the expression of glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper (GILZ) positively correlates with glucocorticoid receptor and negatively correlates with myosin heavy chain expression in L6 muscle cells upon septic serum induction. Moreover, we propose that GILZ may associate with cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β as well as IL-10 to cooperatively modulate the glucocorticoid/glucocorticoid receptor-mediated regulation of protein metabolism during sepsis. So the present study provides a new approach and theoretical basis for further studies on the regulation of protein metabolism of skeletal muscle during sepsis.

Abstract
Extracellular electron transfer of electrochemically active microorganism plays vital role in biogeochemical cycling of metals and carbon and in biosynthesis of bioenergy. Compared to anaerobic anode, micro-aerobic anode captures more energy from microbial fuel cell. However, most of previous researches focused on functioning bacteria in anaerobic anode, functioning bacteria in micro-aerobic anode was rarely studied. Herein, we used the traditional aerobic screening technology to isolate functioning bacteria from a micro-aerobic anode. Three pure cultures Aeromonas sp. WS-XY2, Citrobacter sp. WS-XY3 and Bacterium strain WS-XY4 were obtained. WS-XY2 and WS-XY3 were belonged to Proteobacteria, whereas WS-XY4 was possibly a new species. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry analysis demonstrated all of them showed the electrochemical activity by direct extracellular electron transfer, and micro-aerobic anode could select bacteria that have similar electrochemical activity to proliferate on the anode. We further conclude that functioning bacteria in micro-aerobic anode are more efficient than that of anaerobic anode may be the reason that micro-aerobic anode has better performance than anaerobic anode. Therefore, a thorough study of functioning bacteria in micro-aerobic anode will significantly promote the energy recovery from microbial fuel cell.

Abstract
The tumour-specific 'pre-metastatic niche' has emerged as a potential driving force for tumour metastasis and has been confirmed using mouse models of cancer metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1(+) hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) have been shown to play an important role in metastasis, forming a 'pre-metastatic niche' at designated sites for distant tumour progression. Here, CD133+ human umbilical hematopoietic progenitor cells (HUHPCs) were purified from human umbilical cord blood and expanded in vitro. We studied the effects of CD133+ HUHPCs on the growth and metastasis of four colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines by using cell-to-cell co-culture. Our results revealed that CD133+ HUHPCs promoted the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells in vitro and enhanced tumour growth and metastasis in vivo. Moreover, CD133+ HUHPCs were observed in the pre-metastatic liver tissue using immunohistochemical analysis after co-injection of SW480/EGFP(+) cells and HUHPCs. Further experiments were therefore conducted to uncover the molecular mechanisms by which CD133+ HUHPCs influenced colon carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Extracted proteins were separated using the two-dimensional difference in gel electrophoresis technology. Among the differentially expressed proteins, mitogen-activated protein 4 kinase 4, stromal cell-derived factor-1, matrix metallopeptidase 9, calumenin, peripherin, leucine zipper, putative tumour suppressor 1 and guanidinoacetate methyltransferase attracted our attention. Western blot analysis further confirmed the differential expression of these proteins. Altogether, these results suggest that CD133+ HUHPCs may induce proliferation or metastasis of CRC cells and impact their derived proteins by providing a pre-metastatic microenvironment.

Abstract
This study investigated the microalgae biomass production and nutrients removal efficiency from treated sewage by newly developed membrane photobioreactor in which Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in batch flow mode. Its performance was compared with conventional photobioreactor. The results show that the volumetric microalgae productivity was 39.93 and 10.36 mg L(-1)d(-1) in membrane photobioreactor and conventional photobioreactor, respectively. The nutrients removal rate in membrane photobioreactor was 4.13 mg N L(-1)d(-1) and 0.43 mg P L(-1)d(-1), which was obviously higher than that in conventional photobioreactor (0.59 mg N L(-1)d(-1) and 0.08 mg P L(-1)d(-1)). The better performance of membrane photobioreactor was due to the submerged membrane module in the reactor which acted as a solid-liquid separator and thereby enabled the reactor to operate with higher supply flow rate of cultivation medium. Moreover, in the outflow stage of the membrane photobioreactor, the microalgae culture liquor in the reactor could be further concentrated.
