Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. This study explored the relationship between the MIR31HG gene polymorphisms and the risk of BC in Chinese women. METHODS Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MIR31HG were genotyped among 545 patients with BC and 530 healthy controls using Agena MassARRAY analysis. The PLINK software was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) via the logistic regression analysis. Multi-factor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis was performed to study the impact of SNP-SNP interaction on BC risk. RESULTS MIR31HG rs72703442-AA (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.10-0.79, p = 0.026), rs55683539-TT (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.26-0.80, p = 0.012) and rs2181559-AA (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.40-0.89, p = 0.038) were associated with a reduced risk of BC in Chinese women, as well as stratified results at age ≥ 52 years. Rs79988146 was correlated with estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR)in Chinese female BC patients under various genetic models. Age at menarche stratification indicated that rs1332184 was associated with increased risk in BC patients, whereas stratification by number of births indicated that rs10965064 was associated with reduced risk in BC patients. MDR analysis showed that the best single-locus model for predicting of BC risk are rs55683539, which, rs55683539-CC group was a high risk group and rs55683539-TT group was a low risk group. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that the MIR31HG polymorphisms were associated with a reduced risk of BC in Chinese women.

Abstract
As one of the most common complications of early pregnancy, spontaneous abortion is associated with environmental factors, but reports estimating the effect of ambient temperature on spontaneous abortion are still inconclusive. Herein, a case-control study (1002 cases and 2004 controls) in Nanjing, China, from 2017 to 2021 was conducted to evaluate the association between temperature exposure and the risk of spontaneous abortion by using distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM). As a result, daily mean temperature exposure and early spontaneous abortion showed a nonlinear relationship in 14-day lag periods. Moreover, taking the median temperature (17 °C) as a reference, gradually increased positive effects of high temperature on spontaneous abortion could be found during the 4 days prior to hospitalization, and the highest odds ratio (OR) of 2.07 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36, 3.16) at extremely hot temperature (33 °C) was observed at 1 lag day. The results suggested that high-temperature exposure in short times during early pregnancy might increase the risk of SAB. Thus, our findings highlight the potential risk of short-term high-temperature exposure during early pregnancy, and more evidence was given for the effects of climate change on maternal health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is higher in developing countries. Childhood trauma exposure is a common environmental risk factor in Colombia and might be associated with a more severe course of bipolar disorder in Low-Middle Income-Countries. We carried out the first case-control study in Colombia using a structural clinical interview and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) to describe the prevalence and association between trauma exposure during childhood with a severe course of illness (early age onset, rapid cycling, ideation or suicide attempt, or ≥ 3 hospitalization) in a sample of BD patients. RESULTS A total of 114 cases and 191 controls evaluated showed the following results. Cases included 61.4% BD type I and 38.6% BD type II. The median age was 31.5 years (IQR, 75-24) for BD patients and 31 years old (IQR, 38-24) for healthy controls. A higher prevalence of childhood trauma was evidenced in cases compared to controls. Emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect evidenced a strong association with severe bipolar disorder (OR = 3.42, p < .001; OR = 4.68, p < .001; OR = 4.30, p = .003; OR = 5.10, p < .001; OR = 5.64, p < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This is the first association study between childhood trauma exposure as a higher risk for a severe course of illness in BD patients in Colombian. Our findings highlight the higher prevalence of childhood trauma in bipolar patients and the strong association of childhood trauma with severe bipolar disorder. These findings are relevant for screening and evaluating childhood trauma exposure during the course of BD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore the association between dietary fatty foods and the risk for bladder cancer. METHODS Patients newly diagnosed with bladder cancer (n = 113) and 292 controls were recruited. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to investigate the food intake within 1 y. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to estimated odds ratio (OR) between different types of fatty food consumption and bladder cancer. RESULTS The consumption of soybean oil, the largest proportion of cooking oil, in both groups were much higher than the Chinese recommended dietary intake, especially in the control group. Higher intake of red meat was also observed in bladder cancer cases, although lower intakes of marine fish, egg, milk, and dairy products and nuts were observed in controls. After adjusting for potential confounders, the intakes of marine fish and milk and dairy products were negatively correlated with bladder cancer, with the adjusted OR of 0.28 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.15-0.55) and 0.36 (95% CI, 0.19-0.69). Total nuts were related to a 76% reduction in bladder cancer risk (OR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.12-0.48). There was clear and positive association between soybean oil and bladder cancer risk with OR of 3.47 (95 % CI, 1.69-7.14). In stratified analyses by sex and smoking status, the relationship was similar for most results, except for milk and dairy products. The negative correlation between milk and dairy products and bladder cancer risk was only found in men; and milk and dairy products and bladder cancer risk were irrelevant by smoking status. No significant association was found between the intakes of other foods and bladder cancer risk. CONCLUSIONS Intake of nuts and marine fish may be beneficial for the prevention of bladder cancer. The protective effect of milk and dairy products was only found in men with bladder cancer. High soybean oil intake was a risk factor for bladder cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between diet and central nervous system (CNS) tumours was almost exclusively focused on food composition. We evaluated the relationship of different degrees of food processing with risk of CNS tumours. METHODS The study sample included 44 CNS tumours cases (20 non-malignant and 24 malignant) recruited from the Neurosurgery Department at the IRCCS Neuromed (Italy), and 88 controls matched 1:2 for sex and age± 10 years, identified from the Moli-sani Study. Dietary intake was assessed using a 188-item FFQ. Food items were grouped according to the NOVA classification on the basis of processing as: (1) unprocessed/minimally processed foods; (2) processed culinary ingredients; (3) processed foods; and (4) ultra-processed food (UPF). Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of dietary contributions from each NOVA group (as weight ratio on the total food eaten) and adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS In a multivariable conditional to match logistic regression analysis also controlled for overall diet quality, 1% increment in UPF intake was associated with higher odds of all CNS tumours (OR = 1.06; 1.01-1.13), particularly of malignant CNS tumours (OR = 1.11; 1.02-1.22), while no association with non-malignant CNS tumours was found (OR = 1.06; 0.99-1.15). In contrast, only processed food was inversely associated with risk of both CNS tumours overall (OR = 0.94; 0.90-0.98) and of malignant CNS tumours (OR = 0.90; 0.83-0.96). CONCLUSION Increasing UPF intake was associated with higher risk of CNS tumours, especially malignant ones, independently of the overall diet quality, while only processed food (but not UPF) was inversely related to the risk of this disease.

Abstract
In the world, chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been recognized as one of the critical public health problems, and the prevalence is higher in the elderly people. However, there are few studies on the association between exposure to multiple serum metal levels and CKD. A case-control study, we established, for elderly people in Anhui Province, China, to explore the effects of different metals and analyze the effect of mixed exposure on CKD. In this study, 287 cases of CKD and 287 controls were selected in the elderly health physical examination project in Tongling City, Anhui Province. Questionnaire survey, physical examination, and blood collection were conducted. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) were used to measure the concentration of serum metals. After selecting by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), 5 metals were brought into the multi-metal model. After adjusting all potential covariates additionally, the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), and manganese (Mn) were significantly associated with CKD risk, whereas Pb, Se, and Cd had significant non-linearity with CKD. Besides, patients with highest quartiles of cobalt (Co), lead (Pb), and manganese (Mn) were 1.64, 1.39, and 0.64 times more possible to have CKD, respectively, as compared with the lowest levels. In the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model, cadmium (Cd) had a combined effect with lead (Pb) possibly. This study suggested that the CKD risk was associated with exposure of multiple metals in elderly people. The underlying mechanisms of serum metals and CKD need more experimental and prospective studies to elucidate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Between September 2016 and November 2020, 17 cases of difficult-to-treat resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DTR-PA) were reported in haematology patients at a tertiary referral hospital in the North of England. AIM A retrospective case-control study was conducted to investigate the association between DTR-PA infection and clinical interventions, patient movement, antimicrobial use and comorbidities. METHODS Cases were patients colonized or infected with the outbreak strain of DTR-PA who had been admitted to hospital prior to their positive specimen. Exposures were extracted from medical records, and cases were compared with controls using conditional logistic regression. Environmental and microbiological investigations were also conducted. FINDINGS Seventeen cases and 51 controls were included. The final model included age [>65 years, adjusted OR (aOR) 6.85, P=0.232], sex (aOR 0.60, P=0.688), admission under the transplant team (aOR 14.27, P=0.43) and use of ciprofloxacin (aOR 102.13, P=0.030). Investigations did not indicate case-to-case transmission or a point source, although a common environmental source was highly likely. CONCLUSION This study found that the use of fluoroquinolones is an independent risk factor for DTR-PA in haematology patients. Antimicrobial stewardship and review of fluoroquinolone prophylaxis should be considered as part of PA outbreak investigations in addition to standard infection control interventions.

Abstract
It's well-known that multiple metal elements can lead to the change of oxidative stress response levels in vivo. However, their relationship with age-related cataract (ARC) had not been well studied. We designed a case-control study including 210 individuals with ARC and 210 matched control group. The metal levels in their urine specimens were measured using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to select representative metals into the multi-element model and reduce dimension. Multivariate logic analysis and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were subsequently used to explore the association of ARC risk with multiple metal elements. We found that magnesium (Mg), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se) were positively associated with ARC in the single-element model. The multiple exposure model indicated a positive association between Mg and As, in which the OR in their highest quartile were 3.32 (95% CI: 1.24-8.89) and 7.09 (95% CI: 2.56-19.63). The BKMR model also showed the effect of As increased monotonically with its increasing concentration, and high levels of Mg and As had a significant positive effect on ARC risk. In conclusion, we found that exposure to multiple metals was associated with increased ARC risk. Further research is needed to verify these findings in the future.

Abstract
The association between thromboembolic events (TE) and COVID-19 infection is not completely understood at the population level in the United States. We examined their association using a large US healthcare database. We analyzed data from the Premier Healthcare Database Special COVID-19 Release and conducted a case-control study. The study population consisted of men and non-pregnant women aged ≥ 18 years with (cases) or without (controls) an inpatient ICD-10-CM diagnosis of TE between 3/1/2020 and 6/30/2021. Using multivariable logistic regression, we assessed the association between TE occurrence and COVID-19 diagnosis, adjusting for demographic factors and comorbidities. Among 227,343 cases, 15.2% had a concurrent or prior COVID-19 diagnosis within 30 days of their index TE. Multivariable regression analysis showed a statistically significant association between a COVID-19 diagnosis and TE among cases when compared to controls (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.75, 95% CI 1.72-1.78). The association was more substantial if a COVID-19 diagnosis occurred 1-30 days prior to index hospitalization (aOR 3.00, 95% CI 2.88-3.13) compared to the same encounter as the index hospitalization. Our findings suggest an increased risk of TE among persons within 30 days of being diagnosed COVID-19, highlighting the need for careful consideration of the thrombotic risk among COVID-19 patients, particularly during the first month following diagnosis.

Abstract
Recently published researches show that 59% of all transmission came from asymptomatic transmission and at the time of diagnosis health-care workers (HCWs) tend to present without respiratory symptoms. These evidences have raised questions on whether an essential policy for use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is the best approach in HCW and other people or not. Therefore, this study conducted to investigate the effectiveness of using face masks and PPE in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in health-care and non-health-care settings. This systematic review and meta-analysis study was prepared according to the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis statement and guided by meta-analysis of observational studies recommendations. Searches in databases were conducted from December 2019 to July 2021. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed to investigate the effect of using face masks and PPE on spread of COVID-19. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using Cochran's Q test and the I 2 metrics. In total, 9920 individuals from 14 studies were included in this study. In all settings, application of PPE or any type of masks was associated with reduction in risk of COVID-19 (odds ratio [OR] = 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI]: [0.29, 0.65]; I 2 = 85.21%). In the HCW subgroup, the protective effect had a combined OR of 0.33 (95% CI: (0.15,0.73), I 2 = 82.61%). Six studies were found protective effects of wearing mask in non-HCWs (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: (0.31, 1.06), I 2 = 85.63%). Results suggest that there is association between face mask/PPE use and reduction of COVID-19.

Abstract
Objective In online health communities (OHCs), patients often list their physicians' expertise by user-generated tags based on their consulted diseases. These expertise tags play an essential role in recommending the match of physicians to future patients. However, few studies have examined the impact of the accessibility of e-consults on patient assessments using marking of the physicians' expertise in OHCs. This study aims to investigate what are the patient assessments of the physicians' expertise if they have e-consult accessibility. Methods Through a case-control study, this article examined the effect of e-consult accessibility on patient-generated tags of physician expertise in OHCs. With data collected from the Good Doctor website, the samples consisted of 9841 physicians from 1255 different hospitals widely distributed in China. The breadth of voted expertise (BE) is measured by the number of consulted disease-related labels marked by a physician's served patients (SP). The volume of votes (VV) is measured by the number of a physician's votes given by the SP. The degree of voted diversity (DD) is measured by the information entropy of each physician's service expertise (labeled and voted by patients). The data analysis of e-consult accessibility is conducted by estimating the average treatment effect on the DD of physicians' expertise. Results For the BE, its mean was 7.305 for the case group of physicians with e-consults accessible (photo and text queries), while the mean was 9.465 for the control for physicians without e-consults. For the VV, its mean was 39.720 for the case group, while the mean was 84.565 for the control. For the DD, its mean on patient-generated tags was 2.103 for the case group, which is 0.413 lower than the control group. Conclusion The availability of e-consults increases the concentration on physician expertise in the patient-generated tags. e-Consults reinforce the increment of the already-received physician expertise (reflected in tags), reducing the tag information diversity.

Abstract
Background To organize efforts to manage the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is necessary to understand which groups are at higher risk of infection. Kidney disease seems to be substantial in COVID-19 patients, but there are limited data on COVID-19 incidence and fatality among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. In this study, we intend to examine the association between CKD and susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Materials and Methods Participants were selected from those recruited in a population-based cross-sectional survey of CKD prevalence and associated risk factors in Iranian people 18 years and older. A three-part questionnaire was used for COVID-19 infection clinical symptoms and epidemiologic and hospitalization data. Results A total of 962 individuals including 403 CKD patients and 559 healthy controls were recruited in this study. Healthy controls were suffering more from common cold signs, cough, fever, sore throat, headache, anosmia, dyspnea, and abdominal pain (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, the number of healthy individuals with myalgia was marginally higher compared to the CKD patients (P = 0.057). Data regarding the number of CKD patients with/without COVID-19 infection throughout different CKD stages revealed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of COVID-19 infection in different stages of CKD (P = 0.956). Conclusion We found that some of the clinical presentations of COVID-19 including common cold symptoms, cough, fever, sore throat, headache, anosmia, dyspnea, and abdominal pain were higher among healthy individuals compared to the CKD group. On the other hand, the susceptibility to COVID-19 infection was not significantly different in various early stages of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally. Recent studies have revealed that CYP19A1 gene plays a crucial role in cancer initiation and development. The aim of this study was to assess the association of CYP19A1 genetic polymorphisms with the risk of lung cancer in the Chinese Han population. METHODS This study randomly recruited 489 lung cancer patients and 467 healthy controls. The genotypes of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the CYP19A1 gene were identified by the Agena MassARRY technique. Genetic model analysis was used to assess the association between genetic variations and lung cancer risk. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate the effect of four selected SNPs on lung cancer risk. RESULTS CYP19A1 rs28757157 might contribute to an increased risk of lung cancer (p = 0.025, OR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.03-1.64). In stratified analysis, rs28757157 was associated with an increased cancer risk in the population aged under 60 years, females, smokers, and drinkers. Besides, rs3751592 and rs59429575 were also identified as risk biomarkers in the population under 60 years and drinkers. Meanwhile, a relationship between an enhanced risk of squamous cell carcinoma and rs28757157 was found, while the rs3751592 CC genotype was identified as a risk factor for lung adenocarcinoma development. CONCLUSIONS This study has identified revealed that the three SNPs (rs28757157, rs3751592, and rs59429575) of CYP19A1 are associated with lung cancer in the Chinese Han population. These findings will provide theoretical support for further functional studies of CYP19A1 in lung cancer.

Abstract
Mineral consumption has been suggested to have an impact on gastric cancer (GC) prevention. However, the protective effect of potassium against gastric carcinogenesis remains inconclusive. The causal link between inflammation and cancer is well established. Notably, potassium intake and potassium channels may play certain roles in regulating the production of TNF-α (TNF-α). We aimed to determine whether dietary potassium intake is related to the risk of GC. We further observed whether this association was modified by TNF-α rs1800629. We designed a case-control study comprising 377 GC cases and 756 controls. Information on dietary potassium intake was collected using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Genotyping was performed by the Affymetrix Axiom Exom 319 Array platform. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to assess associations. A significantly reduced GC risk was found for those who consumed higher dietary potassium levels (OR = 0·63, 95 % CI = 0·45, 0·89, P for trend = 0·009). In the dominant model, we observed a non-significant association between TNF-α rs1800629 and GC risk (OR = 1·01, 95 % CI = 0·68, 1·49). In females, those who were homozygous for the major allele (G) of rs1800629 with a higher intake of dietary potassium exhibited a decreased risk of GC (OR = 0·40, 95 % CI = 0·20, 0·78, P interaction = 0·041). This finding emphasises the beneficial effect of potassium intake on GC prevention. However, this association could be modified by TNF-α rs1800629 genotypes. A greater protective effect was exhibited for females with GG homozygotes and high potassium intake.

Abstract
In this case-control study, we assessed differences in daily spiritual experiences between patients with breast cancer diagnoses and healthy controls in relation to other breast cancer risk factors. The participants were 201 newly diagnosed Polish patients with breast cancer (58 ± 6 years) and 201 age-matched healthy controls. Spiritual experiences were assessed using the Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES). Adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the DSES score for breast cancer diagnosis were calculated with logistic regression. The DSES score was significantly higher in the healthy controls than in the cases. After controlling for alcohol use, education, BMI, and rural residence, higher spirituality was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.97-1.00). Two DSES item scores differed significantly between cases and controls, being lower in breast cancer cases: "I am spiritually touched by the beauty of creation" (p = 0.01) and "I feel selfless caring for others" (p = 0.049). After controlling for other variables (i.e., hormone replacement therapy, family history, breastfeeding, and diet quality), the DSES score was statistically non-significant (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.97-1.006). Therefore, the original relationship DSES score and breast cancer was quite weak. Although the study found little relationship between the analyzed variables, presented differences in spirituality may differentiate the patterns of spiritual well-being among breast cancer patients; however, more data are needed from longitudinal study designs to establish causal inferences.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Headache is one of the significant global public health concerns. Furthermore, it is a standard feature of patients with acute and postacute COVID-19. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence of headaches among postacute COVID and non-COVID individuals and identify and contrast the risk factors between both groups. METHODS This was a multicenter case-control study. Individuals who had recovered from acute SARS-CoV-2 infection were considered "case", and those who never tested positive for COVID-19 were considered "control." Headaches were measured using the musculoskeletal subscale of the subjective health complaints scale. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictors of headaches. RESULTS A total of 878 individuals (439 cases) aged 38.30 ± 12.77 years (mean ± standard deviation) participated in this study. The prevalence of headaches was 26.2% among COVID-19 survivors; however, only 10.7% of unaffected participants reported headaches at the same time. Regression analyses suggested that the recovery duration from acute COVID-19 ≤ 90 days (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.03, CI = 1.13-3.65) was the only predictor of headache among postacute COVID-19 survivors. However, the female gender (AOR = 3.09, 95% CI = 1.51-6.32), members of a joint family (AOR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.02-3.90), and city dwellers (AOR = 2.43, 95% CI = 0.94-6.25) were the predictor of headache among non-COVID participants. CONCLUSION This study found a higher prevalence of headaches among COVID-19 survivors. In addition, predictors of headache among cases and controls were unmatched, indicating heterogenous impact of COVID-19 on human health. The health care providers should be informed of the study's results when discussing better practices to mitigate the burden of headaches.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The frequency of intraoperative periprosthetic occult fracture of the acetabulum (IPOA) in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is relatively high. However, the effect of this fracture on clinical outcome and survival of primary THA remains unknown. This study aimed to determine the impact of IPOA on the outcomes of primary THA during a minimum follow-up of 5 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective case-control study compared the outcomes of primary THA with or without IPOA during a minimum 5-year follow-up. Thirty-eight patients who underwent primary THA with IPOA (O group) were matched to 76 patients without IPOA (C group) between 2004 and 2013 based on age, sex, body mass index, primary diseases, cup diameter, cup design, and additional dome screw. Both groups underwent the same rehabilitation programs after surgery. We evaluated the Japanese Orthopaedic Association clinical outcomes score; postoperative complications, such as nerve injury, dislocation, heterotopic ossification, iliopsoas impingement, or infection; and radiographic outcomes. Additionally, we performed Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with cup aseptic loosening, cup failure revision, and all-cause revision as the endpoints. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the pre- and postoperative clinical scores, postoperative complication rates, and cup sagittal rotation between the two groups. Radiographic evaluations showed no aggravation of cases to overt fractures. Bone ingrowth was observed in all cases, and none of the acetabular cups had a progressive radiolucent line ≥ 2 mm in all the 3 acetabular zones. Ten-year survival rates for cup aseptic loosening and cup failure revision were 100% in both groups; those for all-cause revision were 97.4% (92.0-100%) and 100% in the O and C groups, respectively (p = 0.157). CONCLUSIONS Primary THA with IPOA provides favorable mid- to long-term outcomes. On IPOA diagnosis, although radiographic follow-up is necessary, additional treatments or rehabilitation programs are not required. Furthermore, postoperative computed tomography images for the detection of IPOA may be unnecessary.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension (HTN) is a common risk factor for various medical diseases. Recently, there is growing evidence focusing on the potential inflammatory properties of food in the developing HTN risk. However, limited data are indicating the link between the dietary inflammatory index score (DII) and HTN risk. AIM This study aimed to investigate the relationship between DII score and HTN risk in middle-aged people. METHODS This case-control study was performed on 945 middle-aged participants (376 subjects with HTN and 569 control group). Usual dietary intakes were collected using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) for each participant was calculated with a standardized procedure, and the relationship between the risk of HTN and the DII score was investigated. RESULTS The multi-adjusted regression analysis showed that subjects with the higher DII score had a 1.61 times greater chance of developing HTN than individuals in the lowest ones (95% CI 1.07-2.65). Interestingly, after conducting a sex-based analysis, there was no significant relationship between DII score and risk of HTN in middle-aged women (95% CI 0.38-1.61). However, middle-aged men in the highest quartile of DII had greater (2.91 times) odds of HTN compared to the lowest quarter of DII (95% CI 1.52-5.23). CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggested that adherence to a diet with a high inflammatory index could increase the risk of HTN in middle-aged men by approximately 2.9 times. However, following a diet with a high DII score had no significant relationship with HTN risk in middle-aged women.

Abstract
Background Monitoring vaccine effectiveness (VE) remains a priority for epidemiological research throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. VE against infection declines with the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC), but VE against the severe disease remains high. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines used in Russia against lung injury during Delta and Omicron VOC surges. Methods We designed a case–control study (test-negative design) to estimate VE against any (any volume of involved lung parenchyma) and severe (>50% of involved parenchyma) lung injury detected on computer tomography and associated with COVID-19 between October 1, 2021–April 28, 2022 (Delta VOC dominance period followed by Omicron dominance period). We included the data of patients with symptomatic confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection referred to the low-dose computer tomography triage centres. Results Among 23996 patients in the primary analysis, 13372 (55.7%) had any lung injury, and 338 (1.4%) had severe lung injury. The adjusted for age, sex and triage centre VE estimates against any lung injury were 56% (95% confidence interval 54–59) for two-dose Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V), 71% (68–74) for three-dose Gam-COVID-Vac (booster), 2% (−27 to 24) for EpiVacCorona, and 46% (37–53) for CoviVac. VE estimates against severe lung injury were 76% (67–82) for two-dose Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V), 87% (76–93) for three-dose Gam-COVID-Vac, 36% (−63 to 75) for EpiVacCorona, and 80% (45–92) for CoviVac. Conclusions Gam-COVID-Vac remained effective against lung injury associated with COVID-19 during Delta and Omicron VOC surges, and one Gam-COVID-Vac booster could be seen as an appropriate option after a two-dose regimen. CoviVac was also effective against lung injury. EpiVacCorona use in population-based vaccination should be halted until effectiveness and efficacy evidence is provided. Trial registration The joint study of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness in St. Petersburg was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04981405, date of registration—August 4, 2021). Abstract
Parabens are widely used as preservatives, which have been found to affect thyroid function in toxicological studies. However, population studies on whether they are associated with thyroid tumors remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationship between environmental paraben exposure and thyroid cancer and benign nodules. We recruited participants from the Department of Thyroid and Breast Surgery at Wuhan Central Hospital, Wuhan, China. The detectable percentages of methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, and propyl paraben in the urinary samples of 425 study subjects were 99.1%, 95.3%, and 92.0%, respectively. All uncorrected and creatinine-corrected parabens were moderately correlated with one another. After adjusting for possible confounders, all three parabens were associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer. Furthermore, the mixture pollutant analysis of parabens found positive associations with risk of thyroid cancer (OR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.31) and benign nodules (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 0.86, 1.80). We observed that individual exposure to paraben mixtures may be associated with the risk of thyroid cancer and benign nodules.

Abstract
Background Use of maternal near-miss (MNM) cases as an adjunct has been advocated to understand the processes of obstetric care because they share similar pathways as maternal deaths. Identifying the predictors and care pathway is crucial to improve the quality of care and end preventable maternal deaths. Materials and Methods This case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care facility in Kolkata from May 2019 to March 2020. Women admitted with complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of postpartum, who met the World Health Organization (WHO) near-miss criteria, were identified as cases, and equivalent age-group matched controls were recruited. Sample size of 60 cases and 60 controls was estimated, assuming a power of 80%, level of significance 0.05, and case-control ratio of 1. After obtaining approval from the institutional ethics committee and informed written consent from the participants, data was collected through face-to-face interview and review of records. Statistical analysis including care pathway analysis (using three-delay model) was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 16. Results Joint family type (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] [CI] = 5.06 [1.48, 7.28]), lack of antenatal checkups (AOR [CI] = 7.85 [1.47, 12.09]), previous history of cesarean section (AOR [CI] = 3.94 [1.09, 14.33]), first delay in seeking care (AOR [CI] = 13.84 [3.62, 32.83]), and preexisting medical disorders (AOR [CI] = 11.03 [4.62, 22.80]) were identified as significant predictors of MNM in the adjusted model. Significant difference in the proportion of first and second delays in the care pathway was observed between cases and controls. Conclusions Identification of risk factors of MNM and pattern of delays in the care pathway will help improving quality of obstetric care.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS It has been shown that melatonin plays a general beneficial role in type 2 diabetes in rodents but its role in humans is controversial. In the present study, we investigated the association between serum melatonin and type 2 diabetes risk in a southern Chinese population in a case-control study. We also examined the role of gut microbiota in this relationship. METHODS Individuals with type 2 diabetes (cases) and healthy individuals (controls) (n=2034) were recruited from a cross-sectional study and were matched for age and sex in a case-control study. The levels of serum melatonin were measured and the association between serum melatonin and type 2 diabetes risk was examined using a multivariable logistic regression model. We further conducted a rigorously matched case-control study (n=120) in which gut microbial 16S rRNA was sequenced and metabolites were profiled using an untargeted LC-MS/MS approach. RESULTS Higher levels of serum melatonin were significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (OR 0.82 [95% CI 0.74, 0.92]) and with lower levels of fasting glucose after adjustment for covariates (β -0.25 [95% CI -0.38, -0.12]). Gut microbiota exhibited alteration in the individuals with type 2 diabetes, in whom lower levels of serum melatonin, lower α- and β-diversity of gut microbiota (p<0.05), greater abundance of Bifidobacterium and lower abundance of Coprococcus (linear discriminant analysis [LDA] >2.0) were found. Seven genera were correlated with melatonin and type 2 diabetes-related traits; among them Bifidobacterium was positively correlated with serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and IL-10, whereas Coprococcus was negatively correlated with serum IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, TNF-α and LPS (Benjamini-Hochberg-adjusted p value [false discovery rate (FDR)] <0.05). Moreover, altered metabolites were detected in the participants with type 2 diabetes and there was a significant correlation between tryptophan (Trp) metabolites and the melatonin-correlated genera including Bifidobacterium and Coprococcus (FDR<0.05). Similarly, a significant correlation was found between Trp metabolites and inflammation factors, such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, TNF-α and LPS (FDR<0.05). Further, we showed that Trp metabolites may serve as a biomarker to predict type 2 diabetes status (AUC=0.804). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION A higher level of serum melatonin was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Gut microbiota-mediated melatonin signalling was involved in this association; especially, Bifidobacterium- and Coprococcus-mediated Trp metabolites may be involved in the process. These findings uncover the importance of melatonin and melatonin-related bacteria and metabolites as potential therapeutic targets for type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Background Kidney stones have become a worldwide public health problem. The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between plasma cadmium level and the prevalence of kidney stones in an adult population. Methods The data of this study were based on a current survey conducted from December 2018 to November 2019 in Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County, Guangxi, China. A total of 940 study subjects of the same sex and age (within 2 years of each other) according to 1:1 matching were selected for a case–control study. The diagnosis of kidney stones was based on the presence of strong light spots, patches, clusters, or bands within the renal sinus region, followed by an echo-free bundle of acoustic images. Plasma metal elements were determined by the metal plasma method. The relationship between plasma cadmium concentration and the prevalence of kidney stones was assessed using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression. Results The crude ratio for kidney stones in the highest quartile of plasma cadmium was 1.164 (95% CI, 1.121 to 2.324) compared with the lowest quartile. A positive correlation was found between the two (P for trend = 0.039). After adjusting for potential confounders, the ratio of plasma cadmium to kidney stones in the highest quartile was 1.606 (95% CI, 1.100 to 2.344) compared with the lowest quartile, and the findings remained unchanged. Conclusion The odds of kidney stones in adults increased with increasing plasma cadmium exposure, and high plasma cadmium may be a risk factor for kidney stones.

Abstract
The World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) published evidence-based recommendations for cancer prevention focusing on body weight, physical activity, and diet. Our aim is to evaluate whether adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations could reduce endometrial cancer risk. We used data from a multicentric, Italian hospital-based case-control study (1992-2006) including 454 endometrial cancer cases and 908 age-matched controls. Adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations was measured using a score (range: 0-7) based on seven components: body mass index (BMI), physical activity and five dietary items; higher scores indicated higher adherence. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated by multiple (adjusted) conditional logistic regression models including terms for major confounders and energy intake. Adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations was inversely related to endometrial cancer risk (OR = 0·42, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0·30, 0·61 for the highest compared with the lowest score quartile), with a significant trend of decreasing risk with increasing adherence. An inverse association was also observed for a score including only dietary recommendations (OR = 0·67, 95 % CI 0·46, 0·96 for the highest compared with the lowest score tertile). In stratified analyses, the association was stronger among women with a normal weight, those who were older, and consequently those in post-menopause, and those with ≥ 2 children. In conclusion, high adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations has a favourable role in endometrial cancer risk, which is not fully explained by body weight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large family of synthetic chemicals, some of which are mammary toxicants and endocrine disruptors. Recent studies have implicated exposure to PFASs as a risk factor for breast cancer in Europe and America. Little is known about the role of PFASs with respect to breast cancer in the Chinese population. METHODS Participants who were initially diagnosed with breast cancer at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital between 2012 and 2016 were recruited as cases. The controls were randomly selected from the participants with available blood samples in the Chinese National Breast Cancer Screening Program (CNBCSP) cohort. Ultimately, we enrolled 373 breast cancer patients and 657 controls. Plasma PFASs were measured by an ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) system coupled to a 5500 Q-Trap triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. A logistic regression model with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the relationships between PFASs and breast cancer. The three most predictive variables in the LASSO model were selected from 17 PFASs, which was based on the optimal penalty coefficient (λ = 0.0218) identified with the minimum criterion. Additionally, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and quantile g-computation models were applied to evaluate the associations between separate and mixed exposure to PFASs and breast cancer. RESULTS Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) exhibited the highest concentration in both the cases and controls. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluoro-n-decanoic acid (PFDA) were positively associated with breast cancer, and perfluoro-n-tridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) was negatively associated with breast cancer according to both the continuous-PFASs and the quartile-PFASs logistic regression models. Of note, PFOA was associated with the occurrence of estrogen receptor (ER)-, progesterone receptor (PR)-, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer (ORER+ = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.19, 1.80; ORPR+ = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.69; ORHER2 = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.21). CONCLUSIONS Overall, we observed that PFASs were associated with breast cancer in Chinese women. Prospective cohort studies and mechanistic experiments are warranted to elucidate whether these associations are causal.
