Abstract
Rats are an understudied stressor for people in urban environments around the world but the effects may not be distributed equally among residents. In this study, we examined associations between residential rat sightings and mental health in Chicago, where rat complaints are the highest of any American city. We examined how this relationship varied by frequency of rat sightings, race, ethnicity, income, home ownership, and gender and explored potential psychosocial pathways (e.g., feelings about the home) between rat sightings and mental distress. We conducted a randomized household survey along an income gradient in 2021 and asked about depressive symptoms in the past week (i.e., Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale), frequency of rat sightings in/around the home, perceptions of rats, neighborhood conditions, and socio-demographic characteristics. We used logistic regression to assess relationships among these variables for our entire sample and for specific demographics using stratified models. Respondents (n = 589; 409 complete cases) who saw rats in/around the home daily/almost daily had 5.5 times higher odds of reporting high depressive symptoms relative to respondents who saw rats less frequently after accounting for socio-demographics and neighborhood conditions. This relationship was significant for men and respondents with lower incomes or race or ethnicity other than white. Our results show that rat infestations should be considered a threat to mental health among urban residents. Increased mental health support for residents living in rat-infested housing may improve public health in cities.

Abstract
Background Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) have the ability to self-renew and proliferate which gives them healing properties in various tissues. Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) is a chemical compound with harmful effects on health; oxidative stress caused by Aluminium has been reported previously. Crocin, a major component of Crocus sativus (saffron), has antioxidant properties and has shown therapeutic potential. Researchers have been looking for ways to reduce the harmful effects of AlCl3. Methods To investigate whether crocin can reduce AlCl3 cytotoxicity, rat Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BM-MSCs) were isolated, cultured and divided into four experimental groups. The first group was the control, which was untreated cells. The second and third groups were treated with crocin (50, 100, 250, 500 μM) and AlCl3 (20, 25, 30 mM) for 24 hr. The fourth group was pre-treated with crocin (250, 500 μM) for 24 hr and then treated with AlCl3 (20 mM) overnight. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay. Mineralization was evaluated by alizarin red staining. Sox-2 and E-cadherin expression were measured using real-time PCR. Results The results showed that AlCl3 caused cytotoxicity on BM-MSCs and decreased the mRNA expression of Sox-2 and E-cadherin, which are important for the maintenance of self-renewal and proliferation of BM-MSCs. In contrast, crocin protected the self-renewal characteristic of BM-MSCs by increasing Sox-2 expression and also preserved the proliferative effects on BM-MSCs by upregulating E-cadherin expression (***p≤0.001). Conclusion Overall, the study suggests that crocin can protect BM-MSCs from AlCl3-induced cytotoxicity by upregulate Sox-2 expression and E-cadherin expression. This suggests that crocin may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of AlCl3-induced toxicity.

Abstract
Bisphenol P (BPP) is a structural analog of bisphenol A (BPA) and is increasingly used as a substitute of BPA in commercial and household applications. In recent years, BPP has been frequently detected in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Very little epidemiological and experimental information are available on the toxicity potential of BPP in human and animal systems, which is very concerning in view of its increasing use. The current study evaluated the biochemical and histopathological effects of BPP in rats. The seven experimental groups (n = 5 rats/group) included BPA5 (5 mg), BPA50 (50 mg), BPA100 (100 mg), BPP5 (5 mg), BPP50 (50 mg), and BPP100 (100 mg) while the remaining one group served as untreated control. At the end of treatment, the organs (liver, kidney, heart, and lung) of rats were harvested for oxidative stress and histopathological analyses. A significant (p < .05) decrease was observed in the weight of the liver, lungs, and kidneys in the BPP100 group similar to the BPA100 group compared with the control group. Further, a significant (p < .05) decrease was also observed for concentrations of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase) in the liver, lungs, kidneys, and heart at the highest two doses of BPP similar to the respective BPA groups compared with the control group. The two highest doses of BPP induced histopathological changes in the liver such as nuclei distortion, excessive necrosis of hepatocytes, nuclei shrinkage and pyknosis of cells with disrupted cell structure (BPP100), and cellular congestion and degeneration of hepatocytes (BPP50) similar to the two respective doses of BPA. The BPP treated groups also showed varying histopathological changes in kidney tissue, heart tissue, and lung tissue similar to BPA treated rats. In conclusion, the present study indicated that BPP has the potential to induce oxidative stress and alter the histomorphological architecture of different organs and is as deleterious as BPA.

Abstract
Dysbiosis in gut microbiota is known to contribute to development of irritable bowel syndrome. We tried to investigate the effect of Bifidobacterium longum on repeated water avoidance stress (WAS) in a Wistar rat model. The three groups (no-stress, WAS, and WAS with B. longum) of rats were allocated to sham or WAS for 1 hour daily for 10 days, and B. longum was administered through gavage for 10 days. Fecal pellet numbers were counted at the end of each 1-hour session of WAS. After 10 days of repeated WAS, the rats were eutanized, and the feces were collected. WAS increased fecal pellet output (FPO) significantly in both sexes (P < 0.001), while the female B. longum group showed significantly decreased FPO (P = 0.005). However, there was no consistent change of myeloperoxidase activity and mRNA expression of interleukin-1β and TNF-α. Mast cell infiltration at colonic submucosa increased in the female WAS group (P = 0.016). In terms of fecal microbiota, the repeated WAS groups in both sexes showed different beta-diversity compared to control and WAS with B. longum groups. WAS-induced mast cell infiltration was reduced by the administration of B. longum in female rats. Moreover, administration of B. longum relieved WAS-caused dysbiosis, especially in female rats. In conclusion, B. longum was beneficial for WAS-induced stress in rats, especially in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite much work having been conducted on magnetic compression anastomosis (MCA) in the digestive tract, there are no reports on the influence of magnetic force on the anastomosis. AIM To investigate the effect of different magnetic force magnets on the MCA of the digestive tract. METHODS Two groups of magnets of the same sizes but different magnetic forces were designed and produced. A total of 24 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into two groups (powerful magnet group and common magnet group), with 12 rats in each group. Two types of magnets were used to complete the colonic side-to-side anastomosis of the rats. The operation time and magnet discharge time were recorded. The anastomotic specimens were obtained 4 wk after the operation and then the burst pressure and diameter of the anastomosis were measured, and the anastomosis was observed via the naked eye and subjected to histological examination. RESULTS The magnetic forces of the powerful and common magnet groups at zero distance were 8.26 N and 4.10 N, respectively. The colonic side-to-side anastomosis was completed in all 24 rats, and the operation success rate and postoperative survival rate were 100%. No significant difference was noted in the operation time between the two groups. The magnet discharge time of the powerful magnet group was slightly longer than that of the common magnet group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.513). Furthermore, there was no statistical difference in the burst pressure (P = 0.266) or diameter of magnetic anastomosis (P = 0.095) between the two groups. The gross specimens of the two groups showed good anastomotic healing, and histological observation indicated good mucosal continuity without differences on healing. CONCLUSION In the rat colonic side-to-side MCA model, both the powerful magnet with 8.26 N and the common magnet with 4.10 N showed no significant impact on the anastomosis establishment process or its effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Opioids are potent pain relievers for managing severe pain. However, their effectiveness is hindered by tolerance, which causes the need for higher doses and leads to adverse effects. In a previous study, we found that prolonged use of apelin, similar to opioids, results in a tolerance to its analgesic effects. It remains unclear whether there is a cross-tolerance between morphine and apelin, meaning if the analgesic effects of one can reduce the effectiveness of the other. METHODS The tail-flick test was used to assess the nociceptive threshold. All experiments were carried out on 63 male Wistar rats, which received intrathecal apelin (3µg/rat) or morphine (15µg/rat) for 7 days. To determine cross-tolerance between the analgesic effect of morphine and apelin, the analgesic property of apelin or morphine was assessed in chronic morphine- or apelin-treated groups, respectively. To determine the role of apelin and opioid receptors signaling on the development of analgesic cross-tolerance, F13-A and naloxone, as apelin and opioid receptor antagonists, were injected simultaneously with morphine or apelin. At the end of the tests, the expression levels of apelin and mu-opioid receptors were evaluated by western blotting. RESULTS The data indicated that chronic apelin or morphine produced tolerance to the antinociceptive effects of each other. F13-A and naloxone could inhibit the induction of such cross-tolerance. The molecular data showed that there was a significant downregulation of apelin receptors in chronic morphine-treated rats and vice versa. CONCLUSION Chronic administration of apelin or morphine induces analgesic cross-tolerance that may, in part, be mediated through receptor interactions and downregulation. The demonstrated efficacy of F13-A in these experiments highlights its potential as a novel target for improving pain management through the inhibition of the apelin/APJ signaling pathway, meriting further investigation.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants ubiquitous in the environment and humans. In-utero PFAS exposure is associated with numerous adverse health impacts. However, little is known about how prenatal PFAS mixture exposure affects offspring's neurobehavioral function. This study aims to determine the causal relationship between in-utero PFAS mixture exposure and neurobehavioral changes in Sprague-Dawley rat offspring. Dams were exposed via drinking water to the vehicle (control), an environmentally relevant PFAS mixture, or a high-dose PFAS mixture. The environmentally relevant mixture was formulated to resemble measured tap water levels in Pittsboro, NC, USA (10 PFAS compounds; sum PFAS =758.6 ng/L). The high-dose PFAS load was 3.8 mg/L (5000×), within the range of exposures in the experimental literature. Exposure occurred seven days before mating until birth. Following exposure to PFAS-laden water or the vehicle during fetal development, neurobehavioral toxicity was assessed in male and female offspring with a battery of motor, cognitive, and affective function tests as juveniles, adolescents, and adults. Just before weaning, the environmentally relevant exposure group had smaller anogenital distances compared to the vehicle and high-dose groups on day 17, and males in the environmentally relevant exposure group demonstrated lower weights than the high-dose group on day 21 (p < 0.05). Reflex development delays were seen in negative geotaxis acquisition for both exposure groups compared to vehicle-exposed controls (p = 0.009). Our post-weaning behavioral measures of anxiety, depression, and memory were not found to be affected by maternal PFAS exposure. In adolescence (week five) and adulthood (week eight), the high PFAS dose significantly attenuated typical sex differences in locomotor activity. Maternal exposure to an environmentally relevant PFAS mixture produced developmental delays in the domains of pup weight, anogenital distance, and reflex acquisition for rat offspring. The high-dose PFAS exposure significantly decreased typical sex differences in locomotor activity.

Abstract
Excessive consumption of highly palatable foods rich in sugar and fat, often referred to as "junk" or "fast" foods, plays a central role in the development of obesity. The highly palatable characteristics of these foods activate hedonic and motivational mechanisms to promote food-seeking behavior and overeating, which is largely regulated by the brain reward system. Excessive junk food consumption can alter the functioning of this reward system, but exact mechanisms of these changes are still largely unknown. This study investigated whether long-term junk food consumption, in the form of Cafeteria (CAF) diet, can alter the reward system in adult, female Long-Evans rats, and whether different regimes of CAF diet influence the extent of these changes. To this end, rats were exposed to a 6-week diet with either standard chow, or ad libitum daily access to CAF diet, 30 % restricted but daily access to CAF diet, or one-day-a-week (intermittent) ad libitum access to CAF diet, after which c-Fos expression in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), and Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) following consumption of a CAF reward of choice was examined. We found that all CAF diet regimes decreased c-Fos expression in the NAc-shell when presented with a CAF reward, while no changes in c-Fos expression upon the different diet regimes were found in the PFC, and possibly the VTA. Our data suggests that long-term junk food exposure can affect the brain reward system, resulting in an attenuated activity of the NAc-shell.

Abstract
Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main biologically active substance of Nigella sativa (black seeds). It has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidative and anti-nociceptive properties. This study was aimed to explore the effect of TQ on acetic acid-induced visceral nociception. The central mechanisms of the effect of TQ were investigated using cannabinergic (AM251) and α2-adrenergic (yohimbine [Yoh]) antagonists. The lateral ventricle of the brain was cannulated for intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections. Visceral nociception was induced by intra-peritoneal (IP) injection of acetic acid (1.00% in a volume of 1.00 mL). Measuring the latency time to the first writhing appearance and counting the number of writhing in 5-min intervals for a period of 60 min were performed. Locomotor activity was determined using an open-field test. Oral administration (PO) of 2.50 and 10.00 mg kg-1 TQ increased the latency time to the first writhing appearance and decreased the number of writhing. The AM251 (5.00 µg per rat; ICV) and Yoh (5.00 µg per rat; ICV) partially prevented TQ (10.00 mg kg-1; PO)-induced anti-nociception. Locomotor activity was not altered by these treatments. The results of the present study showed that TQ had the ability to reduce visceral nociception caused by IP injection of acetic acid. The central mechanisms of this action of TQ might be partially mediated by cannabinergic and α2-adrenegic receptors.

Abstract
RATIONALE The 5-choice serial reaction time task (5-CSRTT) is commonly used to assess attention in rodents. Manipulation of this task by decreasing the light stimulus duration is often used to probe attentional capacity and causes a decrease in accuracy and an increase in omissions. However, although a decrease in response accuracy is commonly interpreted as a decrease in attention, it is more difficult to interpret an increase in omissions in terms of attentional performance. METHODS Here we present a series of experiments in rats that seeks to investigate the origins of these key behavioral measures of attention in the 5-CSRTT. After an initial training in the 5-CSRTT, rats were tested in a variable stimulus duration procedure to increase task difficulty and probe visual attentional capacity under several specific controlled conditions. CONCLUSIONS We found that response accuracy reflects visuospatial sustained attentional processing, as commonly interpreted, while response omission reflects rats' ignorance about the stimulus location, presumably due to failure to pay attention to the curved wall during its presentation. Moreover, when rats lack of relevant information, they choose not to respond instead of responding randomly. Finally, pretreatment with nicotine selectively decreased response omissions, without affecting response accuracy, particularly when the attentional demand was high. Overall, our results indicate that response accuracy and response omission thus correspond to two distinct attentional states.

Abstract
A central feature in music is the hierarchical organization of its components. Musical pieces are not a simple concatenation of chords, but are characterized by rhythmic and harmonic structures. Here, we explore if sensitivity to music structure might emerge in the absence of any experience with musical stimuli. For this, we tested if rats detect the difference between structured and unstructured musical excerpts and compared their performance with that of humans. Structured melodies were excerpts of Mozart's sonatas. Unstructured melodies were created by the recombination of fragments of different sonatas. We trained listeners (both human participants and Long-Evans rats) with a set of structured and unstructured excerpts, and tested them with completely novel excerpts they had not heard before. After hundreds of training trials, rats were able to tell apart novel structured from unstructured melodies. Human listeners required only a few trials to reach better performance than rats. Interestingly, such performance was increased in humans when tonality changes were included, while it decreased to chance in rats. Our results suggest that, with enough training, rats might learn to discriminate acoustic differences differentiating hierarchical music structures from unstructured excerpts. More importantly, the results point toward species-specific adaptations on how tonality is processed.

Abstract
Purpose N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors that are expressed by T-cells modulate T-cell proliferation, cytotoxicity and cell migration toward chemokines. Several studies have shown an anti-inflammatory effect of NMDA receptor antagonists. This study compares the effect of the noncompetitive low-affinity NMDA receptor antagonist N-(2-adamantyl)-hexamethyleneimine hydrochloride (hemantane) in a topical formulation (gel) with the cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor diclofenac in a topical formulation (gel) in rats with arthritis induced by Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA). Methods On day 14 after an FCA injection into the left hind paw, rats with contralateral hind paw edema were selected for further investigation (29/65). They were treated with 5% hemantane gel or 1% diclofenac gel applied locally to hind paws daily for 2 weeks starting 14 days after the FCA injection. Rats with arthritis were examined hind paw edema, hyperalgesia, and motor deficits; their body weight and hematological parameters were recorded. The rats were euthanized on day 28, followed by histological examination of the ankle joint (HE stain). Results Rats with arthritis exhibited hind paw inflammation and hyperalgesia, motor deficits, changes of hematological parameters, reduced weight gain and spleen hypertrophy. Histological examination of the ankle joint revealed degenerative-dystrophic lesions of the cartilaginous tissue, proliferative inflammation of the synovium, edema and lymphocytic/macrophage infiltration of periarticular tissues. Hemantane gel reduced hind paw edema, pain, motor deficits and histological signs of inflammation; its effect was comparable to diclofenac gel. Conclusion Hemantane gel alleviates FCA-induced arthritis in rats, and its effect is comparable to diclofenac gel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND TB-500 (Ac-LKKTETQ), derived from the active site of thymosin β4 (Tβ4), has various biological functions in its unacetylated form, LKKTETQ. These functions include actin binding, dermal wound healing, angiogenesis, and skin repair. The biological effects of TB-500, however, have not been documented. And the analysis of TB-500 and its metabolites have been neither simultaneously quantified nor structurally identified using synthesized authentic standards. METHODS This study was aimed to investigating simultaneous analytical methods of TB-500 and its metabolites in in-vitro and urine samples by using UHPLC-Q-Exactive orbitrap MS, and to comparing the biological activity of its metabolites with the parent TB-500. The metabolism of TB-500 was investigated in human serum, various in-vitro enzyme systems, and urine samples from rats treated with TB-500, and their biological activities measured by cytotoxicity and wound healing experiments were also evaluated in fibroblasts. RESULTS The simultaneous analytical method for TB-500 and its metabolites was developed and validated. The study found that Ac-LK was the primary metabolite with the highest concentration in rats at 0-6 h intervals. Also, the metabolite Ac-LKK was a long-term metabolite of TB-500 detected up to 72 hr. No cytotoxicity of the parent and its metabolites was found. Ac-LKKTE only showed a significant wound healing activity compared to the control. CONCLUSION The study provides a valuable tool for quantifying TB-500 and its metabolites, contributing to the understanding of metabolism and potential therapeutic applications. Our results also suggest that the previously reported wound-healing activity of TB-500 in literature may be due to its metabolite Ac-LKKTE rather than the parent form.

Abstract
Thrombopoietin mimic peptide (TMP) is a novel thrombopoietin receptor agonist. In this report, we evaluated the potential toxicity of TMP in repeat-dose toxicity and reproductive/developmental toxicity studies (segment Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ). TMP was administered subcutaneously to Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats at 5, 15 or 50 mcg/kg. In repeat-dose toxicity study, the rats were administrated three times a week for 26 week with a 4-week recovery. TMP could produce anti-drug antibodies and induce platelet counts increase, megakaryocyte proliferation. While platelet counts decreased gradually and returned to normal after 4 weeks in male rats. Other significant findings included myelofibrosis of bone marrow, hepatic extramedullary hematopoiesis, splenic lymphocytic depletion and bone hyperostosis. All treatment-related effects were reversed following recovery. The NOAEL of repeat-dose toxicity in female rats is 5 mcg/kg. In the reproductive/developmental toxicity (segment Ⅰ, Ⅲ), no deaths occurred, and no general toxicological effects or abnormal reproductive functions were observed. In embryo-fetal developmental toxicity study (segment Ⅱ), the number of resorbed fetuses in the 50 mcg/kg group was significantly increased. The NOAEL as related to reproductive/developmental toxicity in these rats was 15 mcg/kg.

Abstract
Three experiments are reported that used a new test of spatial memory in rats. The apparatus used was dual eight-arm radial mazes that were connected at one arm of each maze, with a start arm and doors to each maze. Rats could be forced to go to one maze or the other or could make a free choice between mazes. In Experiment 1, rats formed reference memory for the arm containing food on one maze but had food randomly placed on different arms over trials on the other maze. In Experiment 2, rats formed working memory for the arm containing food on one maze but not the other. In Experiment 3, food location changed randomly among trials on both mazes, but one maze contained a cue for the location of food. Rats used reference and working memory to go directly to the food arm on one maze but found food only after searching several arms on the other maze. Most importantly, when given free-choice trials rats developed a significant preference for the maze where they knew the location of food reward or found the cue indicating the location of reward. We suggest these findings may be best interpreted by rats applying two successive rules: (1) choose the maze that leads to the most immediate reward, and (2) use extramaze or intramaze cues to find reward location on the maze.

Abstract
Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) results in significant postoperative liver dysfunction, and the intricate mechanism of IRI poses challenges in developing effective therapeutic drugs. Mitigating the damage caused by hepatic IRI and promoting the repair of postoperative liver injury have become focal points in recent years, holding crucial clinical significance. Adipose mesenchymal stem cell derived exosomes (ADSCs-Exo) and metformin (Met) can play a mitochondrial protective role in the treatment of hepatic IRI, but whether there is a synergistic mechanism for their intervention is not yet known. Combining the unique advantages of exosomes as drug carriers, the aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of the constructed Met and ADSCs-Exo complex (Met-Exo) on the liver IRI combined with partial resection injury in rat and hypoxic reoxygenation injury of rat primary hepatocytes (HCs). In this study, firstly, we detected that mitochondrial morphology and function were severely affected in hepatic tissues after hepatic IRI combined with partial resection, and then verified by in vitro experiments that Met-Exo could promote mitochondrial biosynthesis and fusion-associated protein expression and inhibit mitochondrial fission-related protein expression by modulating the AMPK/SIRT1 signalling pathway. This indicates that ADSCs-Exo can not only play a targeting role as a drug carrier but also has a great potential to act as a vehicle to act synergistically with drugs in the treatment of tissue and organ damage, which provides a new therapeutic strategy and experimental basis for the treatment of liver injury in medical science and clinical veterinary.

Abstract
PURPOSE After extraction, dental alveolus filling aims to reduce bone loss and maintain the alveolus volume during patient rehabilitation. Boric acid (BA) is a boron-derived compound with osteogenic properties and an interesting candidate for alveoli filling. This study aims to investigate the osteogenic capacity of the local application of BA in dental socket preservation. METHODS Thirty-two male Wistar rats were submitted to upper right incisor extraction and randomly divided into four groups (n = 8): control group (no intervention), BA (8 mg/kg) socket filling, bone graft (Cerabone®, Botiss, Germany), and BA + bone graft socket filling. Animals were euthanized 28 days after dental extraction. MicroCT and histological analysis were performed to evaluate the newly formed bone on the dental alveolus. RESULTS MicroCT analysis demonstrated that bone volume fraction (BV/TV), bone surface (BS), bone surface/bone volume ratio (BS/BV), bone surface density (BS/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), total bone porosity (Po-tot), and total volume of pore space (Po.V(tot)) from BA and BA + bone graft rats were significantly different from the control group. Histological evaluation displayed a delayed bone repair in BA rats, with the presence of connective tissue and inflammatory infiltrate. However, the BA + bone graft group demonstrated histological aspects like the bone graft animals, with less organized osteoblasts, suggesting inferior bone repair. CONCLUSION Osteogenic capacity did not depend on the BA local application after 28 days of dental extraction. The presence of inflammation in the BA group can represent toxicity induced by the substance dosage used.

Abstract
Physical activity (PA) is very beneficial for physical and mental health. This study aims to examine the resilience-inducting effect of PA in adult male Wistar rats exposed to unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS). Furthermore, we analyzed the influence of PA on behavioral tasks and functional brain connectivity with cytochrome c oxidase technique. The cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in oxidative phosphorylation and ATP generation. For this analysis, we included five groups: Basal (n = 10, to determine the basal level of brain activity), Behav (n = 15, subjected exclusively to behavioral tests), PA (n = 10, exposed to physical activity), UCMS (n = 15, subjected to a stress protocol) and PA + UCMS (n = 15, exposed to PA prior to stress). The UCMS protocol consisted of randomly presenting several different stressors over four consecutive weeks. We evaluated several behaviors of the Behav, UCMS, and PA + UCMS groups. This assessment includes the hedonic responses using the sucrose consumption task, unconditioned anxiety with the zero maze, and coping strategies assessed with the cat odor test. The UCMS group showed an anhedonia profile and increased anxiety compared with the other groups. Although in the exposure to cat odor test, the PA + UCMS remained for the same time in the cat odor compartment as the other groups, it did not approach the odor, showing that it detected the risk. This response is more adaptive than the responses of the UCMS and Behav groups. An exploratory analysis of the cerebral connections showed an increase in CCO activity in the UCMS group compared to the other groups. This overactivity was reduced in dorsal Cornu Ammonis 3(dCA3) by prior PA. In this region, PA + UCMS showed similar activity as the groups not subjected to chronic stress. Therefore, PA can prevent the harmful effects of chronic stress on dCA3.

Abstract
Here, mitochondria were isolated from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) after being treated with mitochondria-stimulating substrates, 50 μM metformin (Met), and 40 μM dichloroacetic acid (DCA). The isolated mitochondria (2 × 107 particles) were characterized and encapsulated inside 100 μl hydrogel composed of alginate (3 % w/v; Alg)/gelatin (Gel; 1 % w/v) enriched with 1 μM pyrrole (Pyr) solidified in the presence of 0.2 M FeCl3. The physicochemical properties and cytocompatibility of prepared hydrogels were assessed using FTIR, swelling, biodegradation, porosity assays, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mitochondria-bearing hydrogel was injected into the ischemic area of rat hearts. FTIR absorption bands represented that the addition of FeCl3 led to polypyrrole (PPy) formation, polysaccharide oxidation, and interaction between Alg and Gel. SEM images exhibited porous structure and the size of pores was reduced in Alg/Gel + PPy group compared to Alg + PPy hydrogel. Based on the data, both Alg + PPy and Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogels can preserve the integrity and morphology of loaded mitochondria. It was noted that Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel possessed a higher swelling ratio, degradation, and porosity compared to Alg + PPy group. Data confirmed that Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel containing 1 μM Pyr yielded the highest survival rate compared to groups with 2 and 4 μM Pyr (p < 0.05). Injection of mitochondria-loaded Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel yielded significant restoration of left ventricle thickness compared to the infarction, mitochondria, and Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel groups 14 days post-injection (p < 0.05). Histological analyses revealed a significant increase of vWF+ capillaries and α-SMA+ arterioles in the mitochondria-loaded Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel group (p < 0.05). Immunofluorescence imaging revealed the ability of rat cardiomyocytes to uptake mitochondria alone or after being loaded into Alg/Gel + PPy hydrogel. These effects were evident in the Alg/Gel + PPy group. Taken together, electroconductive Alg-based hydrogels are suitable platforms for the transplantation of cells and organelles and the regeneration of ischemic heart changes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Methylene Blue (MB) has been shown to attenuate oxidative, inflammatory, myocardial, and neurological lesions during ischemia-reperfusion and has great potential during cardiac arrest. This study aimed to determine the effects of MB combined with epinephrine during cardiac arrest on myocardial and cerebral lesions. METHOD Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: the sham group (SH, n = 5), and three groups subjected to cardiac arrest (n = 11/group) and treated with EPI 20 µg.kg-1 (EPI), EPI 20 µg.kg-1 + MB 2 mg.kg-1 (EPI + MB), or saline 0.9% 0.2 ml (CTL). Ventricular fibrillation was induced by direct electrical stimulation in the right ventricle for 3 minutes, and anoxia was maintained for 5 minutes. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) consisted of medications, ventilation, chest compressions, and defibrillation. After returning to spontaneous circulation, animals were observed for four hours. Blood gas, troponin, oxidative stress, histology, and TUNEL staining measurements were analyzed. Groups were compared using generalized estimating equations. RESULTS No differences in the Returning of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) rate were observed among the groups (EPI: 63%, EPI + MB: 45%, CTL: 40%, p = 0.672). The mean arterial pressure immediately after ROSC was higher in the EPI+MB group than in the CTRL group (CTL: 30.5 [5.8], EPI: 63 [25.5], EPI+MB: 123 [31] mmHg, p = 0.007). Serum troponin levels were high in the CTL group (CTL: 130.1 [333.8], EPI: 3.70 [36.0], EPI + MB: 43.7 [116.31] ng/mL, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The coadministration of MB and epinephrine failed to yield enhancements in cardiac or brain lesions in a rodent model of cardiac arrest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the effects of molar tooth shortening on the mRNA expression of the AβPP/BACE1, BDNF/TrkB, and Bax/Bcl-2 signaling pathways in the Wistar male rat hippocampal regions. DESIGN Four groups (n = 5 per group) of male Wistar rats (control, SRM (shortened right molar), SLM (shortened left molar), and SBM (shortened bilateral molar)) were used. RNA was isolated from the hippocampus and transformed into cDNA. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to evaluate the mRNA expression levels of AβPP, BACE1, Bax, Bcl-2, BDNF, and TrkB. RESULTS Differential mRNA expression was observed in rat groups. SBM significantly upregulated the AβPP, BACE1, and Bax mRNA expressions, whereas the expression levels of Bcl-2, BDNF, and TrkB were decreased. SRM and SLM approximately had the same effect on the expression enhancement of AβPP, BACE1, and Bax; however, SRM was more effective than SLM in increasing the expression of these genes. CONCLUSIONS Symmetrical molar teeth shortening affected the mRNA expression of AβPP and BACE1, which is related to learning and memory dysfunction.

Abstract
From July 2020 to June 2021, 248 wild house mice (Mus musculus), deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), and black rats (Rattus rattus) from Texas and Washington, USA, and British Columbia, Canada, were tested for SARS-CoV-2 exposure and infection. Two brown rats and 11 house mice were positive for neutralizing antibodies using a surrogate virus neutralization test, but negative or indeterminate with the Multiplexed Fluorometric ImmunoAssay COVID-Plex, which targets full-length spike and nuclear proteins. Oro-nasopharyngeal swabs and fecal samples tested negative by RT-qPCR, with an indeterminate fecal sample in one house mouse. Continued surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wild rodents is warranted.

Abstract
RATIONALE Increasing evidence shows that imidazoline I2 receptor agonists enhance opioid-induced analgesia, suggesting that the combination of I2 receptor agonists with opioids could be a favorable strategy for pain control. However, the effect of I2 receptor agonists on the abuse liability of opioids is unknown. This study examined the impact of the I2 receptor agonist 2-BFI on some abuse-related behavioral effects of the opioid morphine in rats. OBJECTIVES The von Frey filament test was used to determine the antinociceptive effects of 2-BFI (intravenous, i.v.) in a rat model of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain. IV self-administration was used to assess the reinforcing effects of 2-BFI alone and to assess the effects of non-contingent injections of 2-BFI (i.p.) on morphine self-administration. A two-lever drug discrimination paradigm in which rats were trained to discriminate 3.2 mg/kg morphine (i.p.) from saline was used to examine whether 2-BFI or another I2 receptor agonist 2-(4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-yl)quinoline hydrochloride (BU224) affected the discriminative stimulus effects of morphine. RESULTS 2-BFI could not maintain reliable self-administration behavior in rats with no pain or CFA-treated inflammatory pain. However, pretreatment with 2-BFI (i.p.) produced dose-dependent decreases in the dose-effect curve of morphine self-administration. Both 2-BFI and BU224 did not substitute for morphine but significantly attenuated the discriminative stimulus effects of morphine. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that I2 receptor agonists do not enhance, but in fact appear to decrease, the abuse liability of opioids, further supporting the potential utility of I2 receptor agonist-opioid combination therapy for pain control.

Abstract
The current study examined the role of stimulus combinations on the repeated assessment of resurgence. Using a within-session resurgence procedure, rats were exposed to different conditions, each with distinct stimulus combinations (AAA, ABA, ABB, ABC and AAB). Two arrangements of stimulus changes were compared: Experiment 1 involved changes in stimulus combinations every five sessions, while Experiment 2 implemented changes every session. Resurgence was observed in both experiments; however, Experiment 2 demonstrated more consistent and repeated resurgence when stimulus combinations changed every session. Notably, the ABA, ABB and ABC conditions showed the highest percentage of sessions in which resurgence was observed. Lastly, the current study extends the application of the within-session resurgence procedure to rats and auditory stimuli, providing a reliable method for assessing resurgence in single subjects under different variable conditions.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate visuo-cognitive sequelae following blast-induced traumatic brain injury in a rat model. Methods Rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups depending on the intensity/quantity of a blast received in a blast chamber: sham (no blast), low intensity (22 psi), medium intensity (26 psi), or three medium intensity blasts (26 psi × 3). After recovery, all subjects were given visual discrimination tasks of increasing complexity, until mastery. After behavioral training, visual function was assessed via spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and pattern electroretinogram, and the extent of retinal damage was quantified via immunohistochemistry of retinal ganglion cells. Results None of the measures assessing visual function revealed significant differences as a function of blast intensity/quantity. Behavioral training did not disclose short-term effects of blast in general motivation or the development of anticipatory responding. No differences in general learning ability and the number of perseverative errors were observed. However, behavioral training found effects of blast in attentional function; relative to controls, subjects that received blasts were faster in learning to attend to informative (over non-informative) cues in the most difficult visual discrimination task. Conclusion Blast exposure in rats resulted in increased attention following blast, with no appreciable deficits in visual function. These results are contrary to what is often reported for human clinical populations; as such, more research bridging methodological differences is necessary.
