Preparation and In Vitro Evaluation of Chitosan-g-Oligolactide Based Films and Macroporous Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering

In the current study, novel matrices based on chitosan-g-oligo (L,L-/L,D-lactide) copolymers were fabricated. In particular, 2D films were prepared by solvent casting, while 3D macroporous hydrogels were obtained by lyophilization of copolymer solutions. Copolymers of chitosan (Chit) with semi-crystalline oligo (L,L-lactide) (Chit-LL) or amorphous oligo (L,D-lactide) (Chit-LD) were obtained by solid-state mechanochemical synthesis. The structure of the hydrogels was found to be a system of interconnected macropores with an average size of 150 μm. In vitro degradation of these copolymer-based matrices was shown to increase in the case of the Chit-LL-based hydrogel by 34% and decrease for the Chit-LD-based hydrogel by 23% compared to the parameter of the Chit sample. Localization and distribution of mouse fibroblast L929 cells and adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) within the hydrogels was studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Moreover, cellular response, namely cell adhesion, spreading, growth, proliferation, as well as cell differentiation in vitro were also evaluated in the hydrogels for 10-14 days. Both the Chit-LL and Chit-LD matrices were shown to support cell growth and proliferation, while they had improved swelling compared to the Chit matrix. Osteogenic MSCs differentiation on the copolymer-based films was studied by quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Maximal expression levels of osteogenesis markers (alkaline phosphatase (ALPL), bone transcription factor (Runx2), and osteopontin (SPP1) were revealed for the Chit-LD films. Thus, osteodifferentiation was demonstrated to depend on the film composition. Both Chit-LL and Chit-LD copolymer-based matrices are promising for tissue engineering.

The Piezoresponse in WO3 Thin Films Due to N2-Filled Nanovoids Enrichment by Atom Probe Tomography

Tungsten trioxide (WO₃) is a versatile n-type semiconductor with outstanding chromogenic properties highly used to fabricate sensors and electrochromic devices. We present a comprehensive experimental study related to piezoresponse with piezoelectric coefficient d₃₃ = 35 pmV^-1 on WO₃ thin films ~200 nm deposited using RF-sputtering onto alumina (Al₂O₃) substrate with post-deposit annealing treatment of 400 °C in a 3% H₂/N₂-forming gas environment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of WO₃ with domains with different polarization orientations and hysteresis behavior as observed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Furthermore, using atom probe tomography (APT), the microstructure reveals the formation of N₂-filled nanovoids that acts as strain centers producing a local deformation of the WO₃ lattice into a non-centrosymmetric structure, which is related to piezoresponse observations.

Influence of PHA Substrate Surface Characteristics on the Functional State of Endothelial Cells

The needs of modern regenerative medicine for biodegradable polymers are wide and varied. Restoration of the viability of the vascular tree is one of the most important components of the preservation of the usefulness of organs and tissues. The creation of vascular implants compatible with blood is an important task of vascular bioengineering. The function of the endothelial layer of the vessel, being largely responsible for the development of thrombotic complications, is of great importance for hemocompatibility. The development of surfaces with specific characteristics of biomaterials that are used in vascular technologies is one of the solutions for their correct endothelialization. Linear polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable structural polymeric materials suitable for obtaining various types of implants and tissue engineering, having a wide range of structural and physicomechanical properties. The use of PHA of various monomeric compositions in endothelial cultivation makes it possible to evaluate the influence of material properties, especially surface characteristics, on the functional state of cells. It has been established that PHA samples with the inclusion of 3-hydroxyhexanoate have optimal characteristics for the formation of a human umbilical vein endothelial cell, HUVEC, monolayer in terms of cell morphology as well as the levels of expression of vinculin and VE-cadherin. The obtained results provide a rationale for the use of PHA copolymers as materials for direct contact with the endothelium in vascular implants.

Structural, Mechanical, and Tribological Properties of Oriented Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/Graphene Nanoplates/Polyaniline Films

Preparing high-strength polymeric materials using an orientation drawing process is considered one of the most urgent topics in the modern world. Graphene nanoplates/polyaniline (GNP/PANI) were added to the commercial grade UHMWPE (GUR 4120) matrix as a filler with antifriction properties. The effect of GNP/PANI addition on the structure, the orientation process, the void formation (cavitation), the mechanical, and tribological properties was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The paper's findings indicated an increase in the cavitation effect of 120-320% after the addition of GNP/PANI to the UHMWPE polymer matrix. This increase, during the process of the oriented films' thermal orientation hardening, led, in turn, to a decrease in the tensile strength during the process of the oriented films' thermal orientation hardening. Furthermore, the decrease in the coefficient of friction in the best samples of oriented UHMWPE films was two times greater, and the increase in wear resistance was more than an order of magnitude. This process was part of the orientation hardening process for the UHMWPE films containing PE-wax as an intermolecular lubricant, as well as the presence of GNP/PANI in the material, which have a high resistance to abrasive wear.

Chitosan-Based Green Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Pod Extract Gel Film: Characterization and Application in Food Packaging

This work focuses on studying the preparation, characterization (physical, mechanical, optical, and morphological properties as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities) and packaging application of chitosan (CH)-based gel films containing varying empty green pea pod extract (EPPE) concentrations (0, 1, 3, and 5% w/w). The experiments revealed that adding EPPE to CH increased the thickness (from 0.132 ± 0.08 to 0.216 ± 0.08 mm), density (from 1.13 ± 0.02 to 1.94 ± 0.02 g/cm³), and opacity (from 0.71 ± 0.02 to 1.23 ± 0.04), while decreasing the water vapour permeability, water solubility, oil absorption ratio, and whiteness index from 2.34 to 1.08 × 10^-10 g^-1 s^-1 pa^-1, from 29.40 ± 1.23 to 18.75 ± 1.94%, from 0.31 ± 0.006 to 0.08 ± 0.001%, and from 88.10 ± 0.43 to 77.53 ± 0.48, respectively. The EPPE films had better tensile strength (maximum of 26.87 ± 1.38 MPa), elongation percentage (maximum of 58.64 ± 3.00%), biodegradability (maximum of 48.61% after 3 weeks), and migration percentages than the pure CH-gel film. With the addition of EPPE, the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the film improved. SEM revealed that as EPPE concentration increased, agglomerates formed within the films. Moreover, compared to control samples, packing corn oil in CH-based EPPE gel films slowed the rise of thiobarbituric acid and peroxide values. As an industrial application, CH-based EPPE films have the potential to be beneficial in food packaging.

Cellulose-Chitosan Functional Biocomposites

Here, we present a detailed review of recent research and achievements in the field of combining two extremely important polysaccharides; namely, cellulose and chitosan. The most important properties of the two polysaccharides are outlined, giving rise to the interest in their combination. We present various structures and forms of composite materials that have been developed recently. Thus, aerogels, hydrogels, films, foams, membranes, fibres, and nanofibres are discussed, alongside the main techniques for their fabrication, such as coextrusion, co-casting, electrospinning, coating, and adsorption. It is shown that the combination of bacterial cellulose with chitosan has recently gained increasing attention. This is particularly attractive, because both are representative of a biopolymer that is biodegradable and friendly to humans and the environment. The rising standard of living and growing environmental awareness are the driving forces for the development of these materials. In this review, we have shown that the field of combining these two extraordinary polysaccharides is an inexhaustible source of ideas and opportunities for the development of advanced functional materials.

Duplex Coating Combing Vanadate-Intercalated Layered Double Hydroxide and Ce-Doped Sol-Gel Layers on Aluminum Alloy for Active Corrosion Protection

In this study, a duplex coating system (LDH-V/SG-Ce) of vanadate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Ce-doped sol-gel (SG) layers was developed for the purpose of active corrosion protection of the aluminum alloy AA2024. ZnAl-LDH film was grown in situ on the surface of an aluminum alloy using a hydrothermal method and intercalated with V₂O₇^4- anions as corrosion inhibitors, and sealed with a Ce (III)-doped silane coating using a sol-gel technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were used to analyze the microstructure, surface functional groups and structure of the LDH-V/SG-Ce film. The uniform and compact silane layer was covered both in the pores and on top of the LDH film. The results of glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) indicated that V₂O₇^4- and Ce (III) ions were loaded in the LDH layer and silane film, respectively. The potentiodynamic polarization results showed that the corrosion current density of the bilayer system in the presence of corrosion inhibitors was reduced to 1.92 × 10^-8 A/cm². Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the LDH-V/SG-Ce duplex coating could provide effective protection for the aluminum alloy after being exposed to a corrosive solution for 14 days.

Anthracnose Controlled by Essential Oils: Are Nanoemulsion-Based Films and Coatings a Viable and Efficient Technology for Tropical Fruit Preservation?

Post-harvest diseases can be a huge problem for the tropical fruit sector. These fruits are generally consumed in natura; thus, their integrity and appearance directly affect commercialization and consumer desire. Anthracnose is caused by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum and affects tropical fruits, resulting in lesions that impair their appearance and consumption. Antifungals generally used to treat anthracnose can be harmful to human health, as well as to the environment. Therefore, essential oils (EO) have been investigated as natural biofungicides, successfully controlling anthracnose symptoms. The hydrophobicity, high volatility, and oxidative instability of essential oils limit their direct application; hence, these oils must be stabilized before food application. Distinct delivery systems have already been proposed to protect/stabilize EOs, and nanotechnology has recently reshaped the food application limits of EOs. This review presents robust data regarding nanotechnology application and EO antifungal properties, providing new perspectives to further improve the results already achieved in the treatment of anthracnose. Additionally, it evaluates the current scenario involving the application of EO directly or incorporated in films and coatings for anthracnose treatment in tropical fruits, which is of great importance, especially for those fruits intended for exportation that may have a prolonged shelf life.

In Situ Compatibilized Blends of PLA/PCL/CAB Melt-Blown Films with High Elongation: Investigation of Miscibility, Morphology, Crystallinity and Modelling

Ternary-blended, melt-blown films of polylactide (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL) and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) were prepared from preliminary miscibility data using a rapid screening method and optical ternary phase diagram (presented as clear, translucent, and opaque regions) as a guide for the composition selection. The compositions that provided optically clear regions were selected for melt blending. The ternary (PLA/PCL/CAB) blends were first melt-extruded and then melt-blown to form films and characterized for their tensile properties, tensile fractured-surface morphology, miscibility, crystallinity, molecular weight and chemical structure. The results showed that the tensile elongation at the break (%elongation) of the ternary-blended, melt-blown films (85/5/10, 75/10/15, 60/15/25 of PLA/PCL/CAB) was substantially higher (>350%) than pure PLA (ca. 20%). The range of compositions in which a significant increase in %elongation was observed at 55−85% w/w PLA, 5−20% w/w PCL and 10−25% w/w CAB. Films with high %elongation all showed good interfacial interactions between the dispersed phase (PCL and CAB) and matrix (PLA) in FE-SEM and showed improvements in miscibility (higher intermolecular interaction and mixing) and a decrease in the glass transition temperature, when compared to the low %elongation films. The decrease in Mw and Mn and the formation of the new NMR peaks (1H NMR at 3.68−3.73 ppm and 13C NMR at 58.54 ppm) were observed in only the high %elongation films. These are expected to be in situ compatibilizers that are generated during the melt processing, mostly by chain scission. In addition, mathematical modelling was used to study the optimal ratio and cost-effectiveness of blends with optimised mechanical properties. These ternary-blended, melt-blown films have the potential for use in both packaging and medical devices with excellent mechanical performance as well as inherent economic and environmental capabilities.

Perspectives toward the Development of Advanced Materials Based on Bacterial Polysaccharides

Bacteria and their enzymatic machinery, also called bacterial cell factories, produce a diverse variety of biopolymers, such as polynucleotides, polypeptides and polysaccharides, with different and fundamental cellular functions. Polysaccharides are the most widely used biopolymers, especially in biotechnology. This type of biopolymer, thanks to its physical and chemical properties, can be used to create a wide range of advanced bio-based materials, hybrid materials and nanocomposites for a variety of exciting biomedical applications. In contrast to synthetic polymers, bacterial polysaccharides have several advantages, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, low immunogenicity, and non-toxicity, among others. On the other hand, the main advantage of bacterial polysaccharides compared to polymers extracted from other natural sources is that their physicochemical properties, such as purity, porosity, and malleability, among others, can be adapted to a specific application with the use of biotechnological tools and/or chemical modifications. Another great reason for using bacterial polysaccharides is due to the possibility of developing advanced materials from them using bacterial factories that can metabolize raw materials (recycling of industrial and agricultural wastes) that are readily available and in large quantities. Moreover, through this strategy, it is possible to curb environmental pollution. In this article, we project the desire to move towards large-scale production of bacterial polysaccharides taking into account the benefits, weaknesses and prospects in the near future for the development of advanced biological materials for medical and pharmaceutical purposes.

Marine Collagen-Based Antibacterial Film Reinforced with Graphene and Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

It has become more widely available to use biopolymer-based films as alternatives to conventional plastic-based films due to their non-toxic properties, flexibility, and affordability. However, they are limited in application due to deficiencies in their properties. The marine collagen was the specimen for the present study. Thus, the main objective was to reinforce marine collagen-based films with 1.0% (w/w of the dry polymer weight) of iron oxide nanoparticles (IO-NPs), graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO-NPs), or a combination of both oxides (GO-NPs/IO-NPs) as antibacterial and antioxidant additives to overcome some of the limitations of the film. In this way, the nanoparticles were incorporated into the film-forming solution (2% w/v in acetic acid, 0.05 M) and processed by casting. Thereafter, the films were dried and analyzed for their physicochemical, mechanical, microstructural, and functional properties. The results show that the effective combination of GO-NPs/IO-NPs enhanced the physicochemical properties by increasing the water contact angle (WCA) of the films from 77.2 to 84.4° and their transparency (T) from 0.5 to 5.2. Furthermore, these nanoparticles added antioxidant and antibacterial value to the films, with free radical inhibition of up to 95.8% and 23.8 mm of bacteria growth inhibition (diameter). As a result, both types of nanoparticles are proposed as suitable additives to be incorporated into films and enhance their different properties.

Latest Trends in Sustainable Polymeric Food Packaging Films

Food packaging is the best way to protect food while it moves along the entire supply chain to the consumer. However, conventional food packaging poses some problems related to food wastage and excessive plastic production. Considering this, the aim of this work was to examine recent findings related to bio-based alternative food packaging films by means of conventional methodologies and additive manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing (3D-P), with potential to replace conventional petroleum-based food packaging. Based on the findings, progress in the development of bio-based packaging films, biopolymer-based feedstocks for 3D-P, and innovative food packaging materials produced by this technology was identified. However, the lack of studies suggests that 3D-P has not been well-explored in this field. Nonetheless, it is probable that in the future this technology will be more widely employed in the food packaging field, which could lead to a reduction in plastic production as well as safer food consumption.

Enabling Solution Processable COFs through Suppression of Precipitation during Solvothermal Synthesis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline, nanoporous materials of interest for various applications, but current COF synthetic routes lead to insoluble aggregates which precludes processing for practical implementation. Here, we report a COF synthesis method that produces a stable, homogeneous suspension of crystalline COF nanoparticles that enables the preparation of COF monoliths, membranes, and films using conventional solution-processing techniques. Our approach involves the use of a polar solvent, diacid catalyst, and slow reagent mixing procedure at elevated temperatures which altogether enable access to crystalline COF nanoparticle suspension that does not aggregate or precipitate when kept at elevated temperatures. On cooling, the suspension undergoes a thermoreversible gelation transition to produce crystalline and highly porous COF materials. We further show that the modified synthesis approach is compatible with various COF chemistries, including both large- and small-pore imine COFs, hydrazone-linked COFs, and COFs with rhombic and hexagonal topologies, and in each case, we demonstrate that the final product has excellent crystallinity and porosity. The final materials contain both micro- and macropores, and the total porosity can be tuned through variation of sample annealing. Dynamic light scattering measurements reveal the presence of COF nanoparticles that grow with time at room temperature, transitioning from a homogeneous suspension to a gel. Finally, we prepare imine COF membranes and measure their rejection of polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers and oligomers, and these measurements exhibit size-dependent rejection and adsorption of PEG solutes. This work demonstrates a versatile processing strategy to create crystalline and porous COF materials using solution-processing techniques and will greatly advance the development of COFs for various applications.

Tailoring the Emission Behavior of WO3 Thin Films by Eu3+ Ions for Light-Emitting Applications

The article reports the successful fabrication of Eu³⁺-doped WO₃ thin films via the radio-frequency magnetron sputtering (RFMS) technique. To our knowledge, this is the first study showing the tunable visible emission (blue to bluish red) from a WO₃:Eu³⁺ thin film system using RFMS. X-ray diffractograms revealed that the crystalline nature of these thin films increased upto 3 wt% of the Eu³⁺ concentration. The diffraction peaks in the crystalline films are matched well with the monoclinic crystalline phase of WO₃, but for all the films', micro-Raman spectra detected bands related to WO₃ monoclinic phase. Vibrational and surface studies reveal the amorphous/semi-crystalline behavior of the 10 wt% Eu³⁺-doped sample. Valence state determination shows the trivalent state of Eu ions in doped films. In the 400-900 nm regions, the fabricated thin films show an average optical transparency of ~51-85%. Moreover, the band gap energy gradually reduces from 2.95 to 2.49 eV, with an enhancement of the Eu³⁺-doping content. The doped films, except the one at a higher doping concentration (10 wt%), show unique emissions of Eu³⁺ ions, besides the band edge emission of WO₃. With an enhancement of the Eu³⁺ content, the concentration quenching process of the Eu³⁺ ions' emission intensities is visible. The variation in CIE chromaticity coordinates suggest that the overall emission color can be altered from blue to bluish red by changing the Eu³⁺ ion concentration.

The Thermoelectric Properties of Spongy PEDOT Films and 3D-Nanonetworks by Electropolymerization

Recently, polymers have been attracted great attention because of their thermoelectric materials' excellent mechanical properties, specifically their cost-effectiveness and scalability at the industrial level. In this study, the electropolymerization conditions (applied potential and deposition time) of PEDOT films were investigated to improve their thermoelectric properties. The morphology and Raman spectroscopy of the PEDOT films were analyzed according to their applied potential and deposition time. The best thermoelectric properties were found in films grown at 1.3 V for 10 min, with an electrical conductivity of 158 ± 8 S/cm, a Seebeck coefficient of 33 ± 1 µV/K, and a power factor of 17 ± 2 µW/K·m². This power factor value is three times higher than the value reported in the literature for electropolymerized PEDOT films in acetonitrile using lithium perchlorate as a counter-ion. The thermal conductivity was found to be (1.3 ± 0.3) × 10^-1 W/m·K. The highest figure of merit obtained at room temperature was (3.9 ± 1.0) × 10^-2 using lithium perchlorate as a counter-ion. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) PEDOT nanonetworks were electropolymerized inside 3D anodic aluminum oxide (3D AAO), obtaining lower values in their thermoelectric properties.

Impact of Smoking and Vaping in Films on Smoking and Vaping Uptake in Adolescents: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Prevention of smoking uptake in young people is an essential public health target. We have previously reported a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of exposure to smoking imagery in films on the risk of smoking uptake in young people. This study updates that review, and includes studies of the effects of exposure to media vaping imagery on vaping uptake. Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and IBSS) were searched to August 2020 for studies reporting the association between exposure to smoking/vaping in films and smoking/vaping uptake in adolescents. Two authors independently screened papers, extracted data, and assessed quality. This review included 26 studies. Exposure to high levels of smoking imagery in films was associated with an increased likelihood of having ever smoked in nine cross-sectional studies and of smoking uptake in 11 longitudinal studies. Vaping imagery in films was associated with increased likelihood of ever vaping in two cross-sectional studies and vaping uptake in five longitudinal studies. This review concluded that exposure to smoking imagery in films increases the risk of smoking among young people. It is likely that a similar association exists between exposure to vaping imagery and vaping uptake. Therefore, this review recommends introduction of new policies to minimize the impact of this in films which contain smoking or vaping and are likely to be viewed by children and adolescents.

Biopolymer-Based Films Reinforced with Green Synthesized Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Nowadays, biopolymer-based films are being developed as an alternative to conventional plastic-based films, mainly because they are non-toxic, flexible, inexpensive, and widely available. However, they are restricted in their applications due to several deficiencies in their properties. Accordingly, the reinforcement of these materials with nanoparticles/nanofillers could overcome some of their shortcomings, especially those processed by green methods. Green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are highly suggested to overcome these deficiencies. Therefore, the main aim of this work was to develop different biopolymer-based films from cellulose acetate (CA), chitosan (CH), and gelatin (GE) reinforced with ZnO-NPs prepared by casting, and to assess their different properties. The results show the improvements produced by the incorporation of ZnO-NPs (1% w/w) into the CA, CH, and GE systems. Thus, the water contact angles (WCAs) increased by about 12, 13, and 14%, while the water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased by about 14, 6, and 29%, the water solubility (WS) decreased by about 23, 6, and 5%, and the transparency (T) increased by about 19, 31, and 20% in the CA, CH, and GE systems, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were enhanced by increasing the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (by about 39, 13, and 26%, respectively) and Young's modulus (E) (by about 70, 34, and 63%, respectively), thereby decreasing the elongation at the break (ε_max) (by about 56, 23, and 49%, respectively) and the toughness (by about 50, 4, and 30%, respectively). Lastly, the antioxidant properties were enhanced by 34, 49, and 39%, respectively.

In Situ Polymerization of Linseed Oil-Based Composite Film: Enhancement of Mechanical and Water Barrier Properties by the Incorporation of Cinnamaldehyde and Organoclay

Linseed oil-based composite films were prepared with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) using a modified clay (organoclay) through in situ polymerization, which is the result of the interaction between Cin and organoclay. The incorporation of organoclay reduces the polymer chain's mobility and, therefore, increases the thermal stability of the composite films. In some experimental conditions, the clay is located both inside and on the surface of the film, thus, affecting the mechanical and thermal properties as well as the surface properties of the composite films. The incorporation of organoclay decreases the water contact angle of the composite film by more than 15%, whatever the amount of cinnamaldehyde. However, the incorporation of cinnamaldehyde has the opposite effect on film surface properties. Indeed, for the water vapor permeability (WVP), the effect of cinnamaldehyde on the film barrier properties is much higher in the presence of organoclay. The incorporation of hydrophobic compounds into the polymer films reduces the water content, which acts as a plasticizer and, therefore, decreases the WVP by more than 17%. Linseed oil has a natural antioxidant activity (~97%) due to the higher content of unsaturated fatty acids, and this activity increased with the amount of organoclay and cinnamaldehyde.

Evaluating the Performance of Ball-Milled Silk Fibroin Films for Simultaneous Adsorption of Eight Pharmaceuticals from Water

Pollutants mainly exist as multicomponent mixtures in the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to synthesize low-cost adsorbents that can simultaneously adsorb multiple compounds. This work presents the prospect of the adsorption of multiclass pharmaceuticals from the aqueous environment using an adsorbent derived from silk fibroin of the wild silkworm Argema mimosae. The adsorbent was prepared by dissolving degummed silk fibroin and the resultant solution was cast to obtain films that were ball-milled to powder. FTIR results revealed bands corresponding to N-H and C=O stretching vibrations. Particle size distribution data generally showed two size groups in the range of 50-90 nm and 250-625 nm. The study focused on the adsorptive removal of multiple compounds consisting of eight pharmaceuticals representing various classes including a β-blocker (pindolol), anesthetic (lidocaine), stimulant (caffeine), antiviral (nevirapine), steroid (estriol), anti-epileptic (carbamazepine), and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (naproxen). The adsorption process was best fitted to the pseudo-second-order isotherm and an overall match to the Freundlich model. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the process was mainly exothermic and more spontaneous at lower temperatures. The performance of the adsorbent was further evaluated using environmental waters and the adsorbent demonstrated good potential for simultaneous adsorption of multicomponent pharmaceuticals.

Resorbable Nanomatrices from Microbial Polyhydroxyalkanoates: Design Strategy and Characterization

From a series of biodegradable natural polymers of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)-poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P(3HB) and copolymers containing, in addition to 3HB monomers, monomers of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV), 3-hydroxyhexanoate (3HHx), and 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB), with different ratios of monomers poured-solvent casting films and nanomembranes with oriented and non-oriented ultrathin fibers were obtained by electrostatic molding. With the use of SEM, AFM, and measurement of contact angles and energy characteristics, the surface properties and mechanical and biological properties of the polymer products were studied depending on the method of production and the composition of PHAs. It has been shown in cultures of mouse fibroblasts of the NIH 3T3 line and diploid human embryonic cells of the M22 line that elastic films and nanomembranes composed of P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers have high biocompatibility and provide adhesion, proliferation and preservation of the high physiological activity of cells for up to 7 days. Polymer films, namely oriented and non-oriented nanomembranes coated with type 1 collagen, are positively evaluated as experimental wound dressings in experiments on laboratory animals with model and surgical skin lesions. The results of planimetric measurements of the dynamics of wound healing and analysis of histological sections showed the regeneration of model skin defects in groups of animals using experimental wound dressings from P(3HB-co-4HB) of all types, but most actively when using non-oriented nanomembranes obtained by electrospinning. The study highlights the importance of nonwoven nanomembranes obtained by electrospinning from degradable low-crystalline copolymers P(3HB-co-4HB) in the effectiveness of the skin wound healing process.

Novel Pullulan/Gellan Gum Bilayer Film as a Vehicle for Silibinin-Loaded Nanocapsules in the Topical Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis

In this study a novel gellan gum/pullulan bilayer film containing silibinin-loaded nanocapsules was developed for topical treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). The bilayer films were produced by applying a pullulan layer on a gellan gum layer incorporated with silibinin nanocapsules by two-step solvent casting method. The bilayer formation was confirmed by microscopic analysis. In vitro studies showed that pullulan imparts bioadhesitvity for the films and the presence of nanocapsules increased their occlusion factor almost 2-fold. Besides, the nano-based film presented a slow silibinin release and high affinity for cutaneous tissue. Moreover, this film presented high scavenger capacity and non-hemolytic property. In the in vivo study, interestingly, the treatments with vehicle film attenuated the scratching behavior and the ear edema in mice induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). However, the nano-based film containing silibinin modulated the inflammatory and oxidative parameters in a similar or more pronounced way than silibinin solution and vehicle film, as well as than hydrocortisone, a classical treatment of AD. In conclusion, these data suggest that itself gellan gum/pullulan bilayer film might attenuate the effects induced by DNCB, acting together with silibinin-loaded nanocapsules, which protected the skin from oxidative damage, improving the therapeutic effect in this AD-model.

Characterisation of Films Based on Exopolysaccharides from Alteromonas Strains Isolated from French Polynesia Marine Environments

This work assessed the film-forming capacity of exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by six Alteromonas strains recently isolated from different marine environments in French Polynesia atolls. The films were transparent and resulted in small colour alterations when applied over a coloured surface (ΔEab below 12.6 in the five different colours tested). Moreover, scanning electron microscopy showed that the EPS films were dense and compact, with a smooth surface. High water vapour permeabilities were observed (2.7-6.1 × 10-11 mol m-1 s-1 Pa-1), which are characteristic of hydrophilic polysaccharide films. The films were also characterised in terms of barrier properties to oxygen and carbon dioxide. Interestingly, different behaviours in terms of their mechanical properties under tensile tests were observed: three of the EPS films were ductile with high elongation at break (ε) (35.6-47.0%), low tensile strength at break (Ꞇ) (4.55-11.7 MPa) and low Young's modulus (εm) (10-93 MPa), whereas the other three were stiffer and more resistant with a higher Ꞇ (16.6-23.6 MPa), lower ε (2.80-5.58%), and higher εm (597-1100 MPa). These properties demonstrate the potential of Alteromonas sp. EPS films to be applied in different areas such as biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, or food packaging.

NiB-CrC Coatings Prepared by Magnetron Sputtering Using Composite Ceramic NiCr-BC Target Produced by Detonation Spray Coating

A metal-ceramic composite target for magnetron sputtering was fabricated for the first time by a robotic complex for the detonation spraying of coatings equipped with a multi-chamber detonation accelerator. A mixture of metal and ceramic NiCr/B₄C powders was sprayed onto the copper base of the cylindrical composite target cathode. The study of the structure of a metal-ceramic composite coating target using scanning electron microscopy showed that the coating material is dense without visible pores; the elemental composition is evenly distributed in the material. The study of the cathode sputtering area after deposition in the DC mode showed that there are uniform traces of annular erosion on the target surface. The obtained cathode target with an NiCr-70B₄C coating was used to deposit the NiB-Cr₇C₃ coating on flat specimens of 65G steel using equipment for magnetron sputtering UNICOAT 200. The coating was applied in the Direct Current mode. A dense NiB-Cr₇C₃ coating with a thickness of 2 μm was obtained. The NiB-Cr₇C₃ coating has a quasi-amorphous structure. The microstructures and concentration of oxygen and carbon impurities throughout the entire thickness of the coating were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results of the study show that the coatings have a nanocrystalline multi-phase structure. The microhardness of the NiB-Cr₇C₃ coating reached 10 GPa, and the adhesion fracture load exceeded 16 N. The results will open up new prospects for the further elaboration of technology for obtaining original composite cathodes for magnetron sputtering using detonation spraying of coatings.

Biosynthesis and Properties of a P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) Produced by Cupriavidus necator B-10646

Synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers by the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 on fructose or sodium butyrate as the main C-substrate with the addition of γ-valerolactone as a precursor of 3HV and 4HV monomers was studied. Bacterial cells were cultivated in the modes that enabled production of a series of copolymers with molar fractions of 3HV (from 7.3 to 23.4 mol.%) and 4HV (from 1.9 to 4.7 mol.%) with bacterial biomass concentration (8.2 ± 0.2 g/L) and PHA content (80 ± 2%). Using HPLC, DTA, DSC, X-Ray, SEM, and AFM, the physicochemical properties of copolymers and films prepared from them have been investigated as dependent on proportions of monomers. Copolymers are characterized by a reduced degree of crystallinity (C_x 38-49%) molecular weight characteristics M_n (45-87 kDa), and M_w (201-248 kDa) compared with P(3HB). The properties of the films surface of various composition including the porosity and surface roughness were studied. Most of the samples showed a decrease in the average pore area and an increase in their number with a total increase in 3HV and 4HV monomers. The results allow scaling up the productive synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers using Cupriavidus necator B-10646.

Gellan Gum in Wound Dressing Scaffolds

Several factors, such as bacterial infections, underlying conditions, malnutrition, obesity, ageing, and smoking are the most common issues that cause a delayed process of wound healing. Developing wound dressings that promote an accelerated wound healing process and skin regeneration is crucial. The properties of wound dressings that make them suitable for the acceleration of the wound healing process include good antibacterial efficacy, excellent biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, the ability to provide a moist environment, stimulating cell migration and adhesion, and providing gaseous permeation. Biopolymers have demonstrated features appropriate for the development of effective wound dressing scaffolds. Gellan gum is one of the biopolymers that has attracted great attention in biomedical applications. The wound dressing materials fabricated from gellan gum possess outstanding properties when compared to traditional dressings, such as good biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, renewability, and stable nature. This biopolymer has been broadly employed for the development of wound dressing scaffolds in different forms. This review discusses the physicochemical and biological properties of gellan gum-based scaffolds in the management of wounds.
