Hemodynamic and metabolic concomitants of brain swelling and cerebral edema due to experimental cerebral infarction

✓ Severe cerebral ischemia was produced in 25 baboons by clamping the carotid and vertebral arteries bilaterally for 10 minutes. Cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism were monitored throughout. Cerebral anoxia was less severe in animals in which a marked pressor response occurred due to ischemia of the vasomotor center, and a reversible type of brain swelling was usual. In those with more severe ischemic anoxia, progressive cerebral edema was a pathological entity. Evidence is presented that cerebral edema was caused by loss of autoregulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) concomitant with hyperemia and an increase of water and chloride content of brain tissue. Cerebral edema began when CBF was reduced during occlusion and progressed for several hours after termination of occlusion. Evidence is adduced that uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation may be an important concomitant of cerebral edema.

X-rays and nitrogen mustard: independent action in Chinese hamster cells

We have studied the combined effects of X-irradiation and nitrogen mustard treatment on the colony-forming ability of Chinese hamster cells. In contrast to X-irradiation, nitrogen mustard acting by itself yields an exponential dose-effect relationship. Moreover, whether delivered in immediate sequence or after varying intervals, nitrogen mustard treatment does not affect radiation survival and vice versa. These results, plus the lack of any indication of the repair of sublethal nitrogen mustard damage, are consistent with independent but different modes of action at the same site(s), or action at different sites.

Aluminum-26 and Beryllium-10 in Marine Sediment

Activities of aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 in marine sediment were measured at 0.01 +/- 0.13 and 4.4 +/- 0.9 disintegrations per minute, per kilogram dry weight, respectively. Only an upper limit of 0.03 could be determined for the ratio of aluminum-26 to beryllium-10 in the sediment. The ratio is probably explained by production by cosmic rays in the atmosphere.

Autoregulation of cerebral blood flow. Electromagnetic flow measurements during acute hypertension in the monkey

Changes in blood flow through the internal carotid, vertebral and external carotid arteries were measured by electromagnetic flowmeters during and after acute hypertension induced by closing a clamp around the thoracic aorta in anesthetized monkeys.

The internal carotid and vertebral arterial system showed both rapid and delayed autoregulatory responses to rapid increases in blood pressure; the rapid (primary) responses occurred within seconds, the progressive (delayed) within 3 to 4 minutes. In contrast, the flow response within the external carotid system appeared to be passive. Cervical sympathetic innervation and myogenic reflexes (Bayliss reflex) both appear to play a part in the rapidly occurring (primary) regulation of cerebral blood flow. The mechanism responsible for delayed and progressive (secondary) autoregulation in the cerebral vasculature appeared to be metabolic, since it was predominantly influenced by changes in blood Pco 2 . Changes in intracranial pressure did not seem to be involved in autoregulation.
