Abstract
Early postoperative enteral nutrition (EN) after esophagectomy in esophageal cancer patient has been reported to be correlated with a better rehabilitation than parenteral nutrition (PN). However, a robust conclusion has not been achieved. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to compare the postoperative EN and PN in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy. Three electronic databases were searched for eligible studies to be included in the meta-analysis. The summary relative risk/weighted mean difference (RR/WMD) estimates and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using fixed- and random-effects models. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The analysis demonstrated that the early postoperative EN could significantly decrease the pulmonary complications (RR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.22-0.62, P = 0.00, test for heterogeneity: I(2) = 0.0%, P = 0.89) and anastomotic leakage (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.22-0.96, P = 0.04, test for heterogeneity: I(2) = 0.0%, P = 0.66) compared with PN. On the eighth postoperative day, the EN group had a higher levels of albumin (WMD = 1.84, 95% CI = 0.47-3.21, P = 0.01, test for heterogeneity: I(2) = 84.5%, P = 0.00) and prealbumin (WMD = 12.96, 95% CI = 3.63-22.29, P = 0.01, test for heterogeneity: I(2) = 0.0%, P = 0.63) compared with the PN group. However, there was no difference in digestive complications between these two approaches (RR = 1.30, 95% CI = 0.79-2.13, P = 0.30, test for heterogeneity: I(2) = 0.0%, P = 0.97). For patients with esophageal cancer following esophagectomy, the early postoperative EN support could decrease the morbidity of severe complications, such as pulmonary complications and anastomotic leakage, and maintain patients at a better nutritional status than parenteral nutrion support.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop an enzymatic method for conversion of chitin from fungal waste mycelia to chitooligosaccharides. The recombinant chitinase LlChi18A from Lactococcus lactis was over-expressed by Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and purified by affinity chromatography. The enzymatic properties of the purified enzyme were studied by chitin oligosaccharides. Waste mycelium was pre-treated by alkaline. The optimal conditions for hydrolysis of fungal chitin by recombinant chitinase were determined by Schales method. HPLC/ESI-MS was used to determine the content of N-acetylglucosamine and chitooligosaccharides after hydrolysis. The level of reducing sugar released from pretreated mycelium by chitinase increased with the reaction time during 6 days. The main product in the hydrolysates was N,N'-diacetylchitobiose. After hydrolysis by chitinase for 5 d, the yield of N,N'-diacetylchitobiose from waste mycelium was around 10% with estimated purity of around 70%. Combination of chitinase and snailase remarkably increased the yield to 24% with purity of 78%. Fungal mycelium which contains chitin is a new potential source for obtaining food grade chitooligosaccharides.

Abstract
Diffusible signal factor (DSF) represents a new class of widely conserved quorum sensing signals, which regulates various biological functions through intra- or interspecies signaling. The previous studies identified that there is an antagonistic interaction between Xanthomonas and Bacillus species bacteria in natural ecosystem, but the detailed molecular mechanism of interspecies competition is not clear. This study showed that Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) interfered with morphological transition and sporulation of Bacillus thuringiensis in mixed cultures, whereas abrogation of the DSF synthase RpfF reduced the interference. DSF inhibited B. thuringiensis cell division and sporulation through modulation of ftsZ, which encodes an important cell division protein in bacterial cells. In addition, RpfF is essential for production of six DSF-family signals in Xcc, which employ the same signaling pathways to regulate biological functions in Xcc and play similar effects on reduction of cell division, sporulation and antibiotic resistance of B. thuringiensis. Furthermore, abrogation of RpfF decreased the competitive capability of Xcc against B. thuringiensis on the surface of Chinese cabbage leaves. Our findings provide new insights into the role of DSF-family signals in interspecies competition and depict molecular mechanisms with which Xcc competes with B. thuringiensis.

Abstract
BackgroundMaintenance of pulmonary endothelial barrier integrity is important for reducing severity of lung injury. VE-cadherin is a major component of cell–cell adherens junctions in endothelium. In response to inflammatory stimuli, VE-cadherin is tyrosine phosphorylated, resulting in dissociation with catenins, which links to f-actin. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive lysophospholipid, which regulates cell motility. LPA has been shown to increase lung epithelial barrier integrity, while it reduces endothelial barrier function. AM966 is an antagonist exhibiting an anti-fibrotic property. However, the effect of AM966 on pulmonary endothelial barrier integrity has not been well studied.Methods and ResultsTo investigate endothelial barrier integrity, electric cell-substrate sensing (ECIS) system was used to measure permeability in human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs). Similar to the effect of LPA, AM966 increases permeability immediately in a dose dependent manner. To investigate the molecular mechanism by which regulates AM966-mediated reduction of endothelial barrier function, HLMVECs were treated with AM966, and then phosphorylation of myosin light chain (MLC) and VE-cadherin were determined by immunoblotting. AM966 increased phosphorylation of MLC and VE-cadherin. Abstract
Radiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the outcome of radiotherapy in ESCC remains unsatisfactory because esophageal squamous cancer cells, particularly those under hypoxic condition, exhibit radioresistance. The aim of this study was to determine whether or not AZD2281, a potent poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, could enhance the radiation sensitivity of two ESCC cell lines, namely ECA109 and TE13. The radiosensitizing effect of AZD2281 was evaluated on the basis of cell death, clonogenic survival and tumor xenograft progression. AZD2281 alone was slightly toxic to ESCC cell lines. Apoptosis was increased and clonogenic survival was decreased in both cell lines when AZD2281 was combined with ionizing radiation (IR) under normoxic condition. AZD2281 enhanced IR-induced apoptosis to a more significant level under chronic hypoxic condition (0.2% O(2), 48 hour) than under normoxic condition. AZD2281 also slightly enhanced clonogenic cell death under chronic hypoxic condition compared with that under normoxic condition. This result could be associated with increased radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSB), decreased DSB repair and increased apoptosis of ESCC cells. Furthermore, homologous recombination (HR) protein Rad51 expression and focus formation were decreased in ESCC cells exposed to moderate chronic hypoxic condition (0.2% O(2), 48 hour); this result indicated that chronic hypoxic ESCC cells were HR deficient, possibly causing contextual synthetic lethality with PARP inhibitor in radiation sensitization. AZD2281 was also a radiation sensitizer in ESCC tumor xenograft models. Hence, in vitro and in vivo findings provide evidence that AZD2281 potently sensitizes ESCC cells to X-ray irradiation. The selective cell killing of HR-defective hypoxic cells contributes to radiosensitization by PARP inhibitor in ESCC cells under hypoxic condition.

Abstract
Ten-eleven translocation (TET) family enzymes convert 5-methylcytosine to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine in DNA. However, the role of TET enzymes in human gastric cancer remains unknown. Here, we show that TET2 mRNA and protein levels are downregulated in human gastric cancer tissues when compared with normal gastric mucosa. Low expression of TET2 predicts poor overall and disease-free survival. Furthermore, we demonstrate that TET2 inhibits the proliferation and colony formation of human gastric cancer cells by using loss-of-function and gain-of-function strategies. Overexpression of TET2 induces apoptosis in human gastric cancer cells. The mechanism study shows that TET2 binds to the promoter region of the oncogenic long noncoding RNA (lncRNA-ANRIL) and regulates the expression of ANRIL and its downstream genes (INK4a, INK4b, and ARF). Finally, we demonstrate that ANRIL knockdown blocks the effects of TET2 on gastric cancer cell proliferation and colony formation. © 2016 IUBMB Life 68(5):355-364, 2016.

Abstract
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) occurs in babies chronically exposed to opioids during pregnancy. NAS shares features with opioid withdrawal symptoms seen in adults, including autonomic dysregulation. Here, the effect of low-dose in utero methadone (MTD) exposure on respiration-modulated networks along the ventral respiratory column (VRC) in ventrolateral medulla was investigated in the neonate Sprague-Dawley rat. MTD was administered via drinking water (3mg/kg/day in drinking water of the mother E7-E21). Lower expression levels of myelin-associated proteins phosphorylated axonal neurofilament subunit H (pNFH), 2',3'-Cyclicnucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) and myelin basic protein (MBP), in MTD-exposed pups compared to controls at P3, P6 and P10 indicated MTD transport across the placenta. We investigated whether in utero MTD exposure led to network-level excitability changes consistent with tolerance, and also probed for changes in endogenous opioid modulation of respiratory networks. To this end, high-speed (45.5Hz) optical recordings of respiratory network activity in control and MTD-exposed neonate (P0-P2) pups before and during administration of the μ-opioid receptor antagonist naloxone (NAL; 10μM) were carried out. Spike rate was estimated from optical traces via deconvolution, and coupling between all neuron pairs in recorded networks was quantified using the normalized transfer entropy (NTE). Recordings of local networks along the VRC, together with recordings of respiratory output from ventral root C1 did not reveal changes in respiratory activity at the system level, but cellular and network changes in MTD-exposed pups were consistent with the development of opioid tolerance. MTD-exposed pups were found to have i. higher neuronal firing rates; ii. higher covariance between neuronal activity and motor output; iii. more bidirectionally and unidirectionally coupled neurons, and fewer uncoupled neurons; iv. stronger coupling and shorter integration times between network constituents. The μ-opioid receptor antagonist NAL did not alter system-level function. The correlation between the activity of neurons caudal to -400μm and motor output was significantly reduced in control animals following NAL. In both control and MTD-exposed pups, the relative number of neurons whose correlation with motor output increased following NAL followed a rostrocaudal gradient along the VRC, with fewer neurons caudally, and more neurons rostrally. The up-regulation of coupling strength, firing rate and coefficient of variation between neurons and motor output following in utero opioid exposure suggests that these networks may contribute to NAS in infants born to opioid-dependent mothers.

Abstract
The treatment of advanced gastric cancer remains challenging as the outcomes achieved with surgery alone or adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy are poor. New treatment strategies are emerging and being tested in advanced gastric cancer. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors have been confirmed as important therapeutic agents in randomised clinical trials in multiple solid tumour settings. Until now, results of phase II and phase III clinical trials of anti-angiogenic agents on gastric cancer have been relatively modest, with moderate improvement in overall survival. The effects of these drugs are limited due to development of resistance to them and the increased risk of tumour invasion and metastasis. If we are to optimise or develop combination regimens for advanced gastric cancer with VEGF inhibitors that build on their efficacy, it is critical to identify and validate biomarkers in order to enable selection of those patients who are prone to benefit and monitor their response to the drugs. Validated biomarkers can help to further personalise VEGF inhibitors and dosage determination for advanced or metastatic gastric cancer, particularly as these drugs can be toxic and expensive. Although no biomarker is validated for routine use for this purpose, several candidates are currently under investigation. In this review, we aim to give an overview of the recent developments in biomarkers for anti-angiogenic therapy in gastric cancer tumour angiogenesis.

Abstract
Angiogenesis is an essential aspect of tumour growth and metastasis. Solid tumours cannot grow beyond 2-3 mm in diameter without inducing the formation of new blood vessels to support the energetic requirements of tumour cells. Angiogenesis is stimulated by cancer cells through a wide variety of cell-to-cell communication means. Cancer cells can induce endothelial changes by directly targeting cells via soluble factors, adhesion receptors, gap junctions and vesicles. They also can stimulate endothelial signaling pathways in an indirect way, e.g. by activating stromal cells, by secreting proteases into the extracellular space or even by changing the pH, temperature and availability of oxygen and nutrients. Anti-angiogenic drugs appear to be an effective cancer treatment in animal models but have been shown to have a limited effect in the long term. Resistance to anti-angiogenic therapies has been attributed to the ability of cancer cells to induce angiogenesis in a different way. We propose that cancer cells also change the way they communicate with endothelial cells in order to escape therapies that inhibit angiogenesis and that a better knowledge of this phenomenon will help us design more efficient drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aggressive surgical removal of the primary tumour is the preferred treatment, but with tumour progression, some tumours cannot be completely removed surgically. Anaesthetics are administered to facilitate surgery. However, anaesthetics act as a potential factor in tumour recurrence or metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Normal breast cells and cancer breast cells were treated with different doses of muscle-relaxant anaesthetics. The effects on breast cancer cell invasion, adhesion and migration of these anaesthetics were then investigated using in vitro models. RESULTS With increasing dose of rocuronium bromide and suxamethonium chloride CRS, the number of MCF-10A and MCF-7 cells, but not that of MDA-MB-231 cells, decreased. There was almost no difference in the number of cells when the three cell lines were treated with different doses of vecuronium bromide. The study also demonstrated that rocuronium bromide promoted the invasion, adhesion and growth of MDA-231 cells, while suxamethonium chloride CRS had no effect. Interestingly, vecuronium bromide did not affect the motility and invasion of breast cancer cells significantly. CONCLUSION An understanding of the effect of anaesthetics and their impact on tumour metastasis is important, thus using an appropriate aesthetic strategy could improve long-term survival in some patients.

Abstract
Sirt6 is a histone deacetylase with NAD(+)-dependent activity. Sirt6 has been shown as a tumor suppressor partially via inhibiting the expression of c-Myc target genes and ribosome biogenesis. However, how to regulate Sirt6 activity is largely unknown. In this study, we identify that Sirt6 can be modified by small ubiquitin-like modifier. Sirt6 SUMOylation deficiency specifically decreases its deacetylation of H3K56 but not H3K9 in vivo. Mechanistically, we find that SUMOylation deficiency decreases Sirt6 binding with c-Myc, decreasing Sirt6 occupancy on the locus of c-Myc target genes. Therefore, Sirt6 SUMOylation deficiency reduces its deacetylation of H3k56 and its repression of c-Myc target genes. Moreover, Sirt6 SUMOylation deficiency reduces its suppression of cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Thus, these results reveal that SUMOylation has an important role in regulation of Sirt6 deacetylation on H3K56, as well as its tumor suppressive activity.

Abstract
In this paper we investigate optimal forms of dynamic reinsurance polices among a class of general reinsurance strategies. The original surplus process of an insurance portfolio is assumed to follow a Markov jump process with state-dependent income. We assume that the insurer uses a dynamic reinsurance policy to minimize the probability of absolute ruin, where the traditional ruin can be viewed as a special case of absolute ruin. In terms of approximation theory of stochastic process, the controlled diffusion model with a general reinsurance policy is established strictly. In such a risk model, absolute ruin is said to occur when the drift coefficient of the surplus process turns negative, when the insurer has no profitability any more. Under the expected value premium principle, we rigorously prove that a dynamic excess-of-loss reinsurance is the optimal form of reinsurance among a class of general reinsurance strategies in a dynamic control framework. Moreover, by solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, we derive both the explicit expression of the optimal dynamic excess-of-loss reinsurance strategy and the closed-form solution to the absolute ruin probability under the optimal reinsurance strategy. We also illustrate these explicit solutions using numerical examples.

Abstract
Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA) is an invasive hepatic malignancy that is difficult to biopsy; therefore, novel markers of HCCA prognosis are needed. Here, the level of canonical Wnt activation in patients with HCCA, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC), and congenital choledochal cysts (CCC) was compared to understand the role of Wnt signaling in HCCA. Pathology specimens from HCCA (n=129), IHCC (n=31), and CCC (n=45) patients were used to construct tissue microarrays. Wnt2, Wnt3, β-catenin, TCF4, c-Myc, and cyclin D1 were detected by immunohistochemistry. Parallel correlation analysis was used to analyze differences in protein levels between the HCCA, IHCC, and CCC groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine independent predictors of successful resection and prognosis in the HCCA group. The protein levels of Wnt2, β-catenin, TCF4, c-Myc, and cyclin D1 were significantly higher in HCCA compared to IHHC or CCC. Wnt signaling activation (Wnt2+, Wnt3+, nuclear β-catenin+, nuclear TCF4+) was significantly greater in HCCA tissues than CCC tissues. Univariable analyses indicated that expression of cyclin D1 as well as Wnt signaling activation, and partial Wnt activation (Wnt2+ or Wnt3+ and nuclear β-catenin+ or nuclear TCF4+) predicted successful resection, but only cyclin D1 expression remained significant in multivariable analyses. Only partial Wnt activation was an independent predictor of survival time. Proteins in the canonical Wnt signaling pathway were present at higher levels in HCCA and correlated with tumor resecility and patient prognosis. These results suggest that Wnt pathway analysis may be a useful marker for clinical outcome in HCCA.

Abstract
An array of specific and non-specific molecules, which are expressed in the testis, have been demonstrated to be responsible for testicular function. Our previous study revealed that dermatopontin (DPT) is expressed in Sertoli cells of the testis, however, its roles in testicular function remains somewhat elusive. In the present study, CdCl2- and busulfan-induced testicular dysfunction models were used to investigate the implications of DPT expression for testicular function. The mRNA and protein expression levels of DPT were detected using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. A negative correlation was observed between testicular damage and the expression of DPT, which suggested that an increase in DPT expression may be a marker for testicular dysfunction. This result was corroborated by the finding that transgenic mice exhibiting Sertoli cell-specific overexpression of DPT exhibited damage to their testicular morphology. Additionally, DPT overexpression in the testis affected the expression levels of claudin-11 and zonula occludens-1, which indicated that DPT may affect testicular function by affecting the integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB). In conclusion, the present study provided evidence to suggest that DPT may be indicative of mouse testicular dysfunction, since increased expression may be associated with damage to the BTB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-liver transplantation acute lung injury (ALI) severely affects patients' survival, whereas the mechanism is unclear and effective therapy is lacking. The authors postulated that reperfusion-induced increased oxidative stress plays a critical role in mediating post-liver transplantation ALI and that induction of heme oxgenase-1 (HO-1), an enzyme with anti-oxidative stress properties, can confer effective protection of lung against ALI. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent autologous orthotopic liver transplantation (OALT) in the absence or presence of treatments with the selective HO-1 inducer (Hemin) or HO-1 inhibitor (ZnPP). Lung tissues were collected at 8 h after OALT, pathological scores and lung water content were evaluated; survival rate of rats was analyzed; protein expression of HO-1 was determined by western blotting, and nuclear translocation of Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor(NF)-κB p65 were detected by Immunofluorescence staining. The inflammatory cytokines and oxidative indexes of lung tissue were determined. RESULTS In lungs harvested at the early stage i.e. 8 h after OALT, Hemin treatment significantly increased superoxide dismutase activities, and reduced malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, interleukin-6, myeloperoxidase, and tumor necrosis factor-α production,which were associated with increased HO-1 protein expression and lower pathological scores and increased survival rate of rats. The underline mechanisms might associate with activation of Nrf2 and inhibition of NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation. However, these changes were aggravated by ZnPP. CONCLUSIONS Hemin pretreatment, by enhancing HO-1 induction, increased lung antioxidant capacity and reduced inflammatory stress,protected the lung from OALT-induced ALI at early stage of reperfusion.

Abstract
Donor-specific alloantibodies (DSA) can cause acute antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) in all solid organ allografts. However, long-term outcome in patients with posttransplant DSA needs further study. We retrospectively evaluated prospectively collected paired serum, tissue, and data on 45 matched DSA- positive [DSA+; mean florescence intensity (MFI) ≥10,000] and -negative (DSA-) recipients of a primary liver-only allograft from January 2000 to April 2009. Blinded histopathologic evaluation demonstrated that DSA+ versus DSA- patients were more likely to have subtle inflammation and unique patterns of fibrosis, despite normal or near-normal liver function tests. Stepwise multivariable modeling developed a score (putatively named the chronic AMR [cAMR] score) that included interface activity, lobular inflammation, portal tract collagenization, portal venopathy, sinusoidal fibrosis, and hepatitis C virus status. The score was developed (c = 0.811) and cross-validated (c = 0.704) to predict allograft failure. Two cutoffs were employed to optimize sensitivity and specificity (80% each); a value >27.5 predicted 50% 10-year allograft failure. We propose chronic AMR as a potential new entity defined by (1) a high cAMR score, (2) DSA, and (3) elimination of other potential causes of a similar injury pattern. In conclusion, cAMR score calculation identified liver allograft recipients with DSA at highest risk for allograft loss, although independent validation is needed.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) of the musculoskeletal system is a rare clinical condition. Multifocal bone involvement is extremely rare and difficult to recognize. Thus, due to the diverse and atypical clinical manifestations of multifocal skeletal TB, the disease is easy to misdiagnose. In the present study, a rare case of atypical disseminated multifocal skeletal TB was reported, which exhibited uncommon findings in radiological images that were more suggestive of a hematological malignancy or metastatic disease. In conclusion, the diagnosis of this condition by conventional diagnostic methods is challenging. The importance of CT-guided needle biopsy and open biopsy in the diagnosis of skeletal TB was emphasized.

Abstract
The study was designed to explore the drug-drug interactions mechanisms mediated by OATP1B1 between traditional Chinese medicine Danshensu and rosuvastatin. First, the changes of rosuvastatin pharmacokinetics were investigated in presence of Danshensu in rats. Then, the primary rat hepatocytes model was established to explore the effects of Danshensu on the uptake of rosuvastatin by hepatocytes. Finally, HEK293T cells with overexpression of OATP1B1*a and OATP1B1*5 were established using a lentiviral delivery system to explore the effects of Danshensu on the uptake of rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin pharmacokinetic parameters of C(max0, AUCO(0-t), AUC(0-∞) were increased about 123%, 194% and 195%, by Danshensu in rats, while the CL z/F value was decreased by 60%. Uptake of rosuvastatin in the primary rat hepatocytes was decreased by 3.13%, 41.15% and 74.62%, respectively in the presence of 20, 40 and 80 μmol x L(-1) Danshensu. The IC50 parameters was (53.04 ± 2.43) μmol x L(-1). The inhibitory effect of Danshensu on OATP1B1 mediated transport of rosuvastatin was related to the OATP1B1 gene type. In OATP1B1*5-HEK293T mutant cells, transport of rosuvastatin were reduced by (39.11 ± 4.94)% and (63.61 ± 3.94)%, respectively, by Danshensu at 1 and 10 μmol x L(-1). While transport of rosuvastatin was reduced by (8.22 ± 2.40)% and (11.56 ± 3.04)% and in OATP1B1*1a cells, respectively. Danshensu significantly altered the pharmacokinetics of rosuvastatin in rats, which was related to competitive inhibition of transport by OATPJBI. Danshensu exhibited a significant activity in the inhibition of rosuvastatin transport by OATP1B1*5-HEK293T, but not by OATP1B1*1a, suggesting a dependence on OATP1B1 sequence.

Abstract
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare but potentially devastating complication of pregnancy. The authors report a case of a successful treatment of recurrent TTP complicating pregnancy. A review of the literature shows that recurrent TTP complicating pregnancy is uncommon and fresh frozen plasma exchange is important treatment; if the patient was treated properly, the pregnant showed favorable prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive dysfunction has been recognized as a cardinal feature of schizophrenia. Elucidating the neurobiological substrates of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia would help identify the underlying mechanism of this disorder. The rs1064395 single nucleotide polymorphism, within the gene encoding neurocan (NCAN), is reported to be associated with schizophrenia in European populations and may influence brain structure in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS In this study, we aimed to explore whether NCAN rs1064395 confers some risk for schizophrenia and cognitive dysfunction in Han Chinese. We recruited 681 patients with schizophrenia and 699 healthy subjects. Two hundred and fifty-four patients were evaluated according to Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). RESULTS There were no significant differences in genotype or allele distributions of the rs1064395 polymorphism between the schizophrenia and control groups. Patients showed significantly poorer performance than controls on immediate memory, visuospatial skill, language, attention, delayed memory, and total RBANS score. Patients with the A/A or A/G genotype of rs1064395 had lower scores of immediate memory, visuospatial skill, attention, and total RBANS score than those with the G/G genotype. We performed an expression quantitative trait loci analysis and observed a significant association between rs1064395 and NCAN expression in the frontal (P=0.0022, P=0.022 after Bonferroni correction) and cerebellar cortex (P=0.0032, P=0.032 after Bonferroni correction). CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that this single nucleotide polymorphism may be a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. Further investigations are warranted for validation purposes and to identify the precise mechanism by which rs1064395 influences cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia.
