Carcinoma of the bladder: a clinical and pathological analysis of 87 autopsy cases

A clinical and pathological analysis was done on 87 autopsy cases of carcinoma of the bladder. Of the 87 cases 68 were men and 19 were women, with a mean age of 64 years. The average survival time was 39 months from the onset of symptoms to death. The patients with multiple tumors had a longer average survival time than the patients with single tumors (51 compared to 40 months), and the average survival times were definitely more favorable for men than for women (43 compared to 23 months). Histological examination revealed transitional cell carcinoma in 77 patients, squamous cell carcinoma in 4, vesical adenocarcinoma in 3 and urachal adenocarcinoma in 3. Squamous cell carcinoma and vesical adenocarcinoma seemed to be more malignant neoplasms. Metastasis was noted in 58 of 87 cases (66.7 per cent) and occurred most frequently in lymph nodes (37.9 per cent), liver (29.9 per cent), lungs (29.9 per cent) and bones (24.1 per cent). Of the 87 cases of bladder carcinoma 11 had primary carcinoma in organs other than the bladder.

A quantitative EM autoradiographic study of the commissural and associational connections of the dentate gyrus in the rat

The distribution of anterogradely transported radioactivity in the ipsilateral associational and commissural afferents to the dentate gyrus, after injections of 3H-proline into the hilar region, has been analyzed in light and electron microscopic autoradiographs of adjoining semi-thin and ultra-thin sections, respectively. In the inner third of the molecular layer, in which the two classes of afferents terminate, between 57% and 69% of the label was found over fine preterminal axons and presynaptic profiles; the remaining radioactivity was about equally distributed between dendritic profiles and other tissue components (mainly glial processes). Estimates of the relative numbers of grains within the peak region of labeling over the molecular layer of the supra- and infrapyramidal blades in the LM and EM autoradiographs (what we have termed the supra:infrapyramidal ratio) are surprisingly close despite appreciable differences in the absolute number of grains in different experiments. This suggests that in selected systems grain density estimates of this type can provide an accurate indication of the relative number of axons and axon terminals derived from the labeled projection systems, at least if the analyses are carried out on the same autoradiographs. Our results provide evidence for the assumption underlying the so-called temporal competition hypothesis (Gottlieb and Cowan 1972) and the report of a re-organization that occurs in the distribution of the associational afferents after hippocampal commissurotomy (O'Leary et al. 1980).

Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder in patients with renal pelvic and ureteral cancer

We reviewed 41 cases of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter with special reference to the coexistence or subsequent development of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer was associated with an upper urinary tract neoplasm in 20 of the 41 cases (48 per cent). Most of these patients (15 of 20) were treated by radical total cystectomy of 1-stage nephroureterocystectomy. The incidence of ureteral stump cancer after nephrectomy alone or incomplete nephroureterectomy was 64 per cent (7 of 11 patients). Twelve surgically removed specimens of the renal pelvis, ureter and/or bladder were examined extensively for the histological association of pre-neoplastic disease, such as atypical hyperplasia and carcinoma in situ. Every specimen had these changes of the urothelium adjacent to and remote from obvious tumors.

F-Protein, a myofibrillar protein interacting with myosin

F-Protein has an amino acid composition distinctively different from those of myofibriller proteins so far reported to be of similar chain weight: M-protein component II, alpha-actinin, and AMP deaminase. Its molecular weight was estimated to be 121,000 by sedimentation equilibrium in 0.3 M KCl, 10 mM potassium phosphate, pH 6.5. Its binding to myosin was inhibited by C-protein. It reduced the effect of C-protein on the assembly reaction of myosin in vitro.

Clinical evaluation of long-term survival after total gastrectomy

Twenty-seven cases of long-term survival after total gastrectomy were clinically evaluated. From the standpoint of general nutrition and rehabilitation, the patients appeared to be in satisfactory condition. However, hyperchromic anemia, serum vitamin B12 deficiency, and osteoporosis were noted in some patients.

Clinical and radiographic study of dens invaginatus

After a determination of the frequency of dens invaginatus by means of radiographic observations, various problems of its identification are discussed. The 188 teeth showing a distinct loop-shaped invagination apically on the radiograph were studied for the presence or absence of caries and periapical lesions. It was demonstrated that periapical lesions caused by caries are mostly due to interproximal caries and that the frequency of periapical lesions caused by caries in the dens invaginatus area was less than previously reported. Comments are made on the dens invaginatus cases having periapical lesions without caries and the parameters for future studies.

A note on the distribution of glial cells in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus

The distribution of the perikarya of astrocytes and other glial cells in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus has been studied in gold chloride-sublimate preparations of rats and of normal and reeler mice, and in plastic embedded material from young adult rats. Contrary to previous reports (Rose et al. [7]), we have found no evidence for a distinct "line" or "band" of astrocyte cell bodies along the interface between the zones of termination of the entorhinal and hippocampal afferents to the dentate gyrus. Indeed, apart from a conspicuous accumulation of astrocytes immediately beneath the pial surface and hippocampal fissure, the distribution of glial cells across the extent of the molecular layer appears to be more or less random. In view of this it is difficult to ascribe a critical role to the astrocytes in either determining the normal distribution of afferent fibers to the dentate gyrus or in promoting their re-organization following its partial deafferentation.

[Reconstruction following cardia resection using an interposed jejunal loop without mesenteric resection]

For reconstruction after cardial resection, we invented a method combining the cardial resection method of Nissen and the gastrectomy method of Tomoda. One peculiarity of this method is the reconstruction by means of a jejunal sling that becomes intercalated between esophagus and antrum without wide dissection of the mesentery. By this method, the esophageal passage is physiological and the frequency of esophageal regurgitation compared with esophagogastrostomy is diminished.

Requirement and utilization of egg protein by Japanese young men with marginal intakes of energy

The effect of marginal intakes of energy on the requirement and utilization of egg protein was evaluated in 46 Japanese young men. The subjects were given a standard diet for 1 week and then low protein diets for 2 weeks. These diets contained about 32, 64, and 80 mgN/kg with whole eggs as the protein source. In the first experiment with excess energy, the energy intakes of 31 subjects were kept constant during the 3 week experiment, the mean intakes being 48.2 +/- 1.5 kcal/kg. The body weight was affected by changing protein intakes while maintaining energy intakes at 48 kcal/kg. From regression analysis, the N requirement for apparent N equilibrium was estimated to be 82.0 +/- 8.0 mgN/kg, where NPU was calculated as 56. In the second experiment with submaintenance energy, 15 subjects received 40 kcal/kg. The N requirement was 124 +/- 21 mgN/kg, where NPU was calculated as 37. From these results and those of previous studies, it was concluded as follows: 1) N balance and NPU were remarkably affected by energy intake changed around maintenance level; and 2) the NPU for egg protein in young men for maintenance intakes of energy and N is about 50 to 55. For estimation of the protein requirement for Japanese adults, a correction factor of 100/55 (about 1.8) was used instead of 1.3 adopted by the 1973 FAO/WHO.

Immunochemical studies on blood group A substance from human hair

Blood group A-active substance was extracted from urea-treated human hair uith methanol-ethyl ether 1:1, v/v) or chloroform-methanol (1:1, v/v). The serological activity of blood group A substance in the hair was destroyed by A-decomposing enzyme from Clostridium tertium with concomitant development of blood group H activity. It is concluded therefore that the extract from the hair of group A contained blood group A-active glycolipid with N-acetylgalactosamine as the non-reducing sugar.
