Abstract
To verify whether ginsenosides will attenuate the myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury, the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was snared for 2 hours in 23 dogs and then the ischemic myocardium was reperfused. 45 minutes after ischemia, the animals were randomly divided into a ginsenosides group (n = 11, receiving a slow IV bolus of ginsenosides 10 mg/kg and then a continuous infusion of 80 micrograms/kg/min) and a saline solution group (n = 12 receiving equal amount of glucose in saline). The treatment was started 45 minutes after coronary occlusion and stopped one hour after reperfusion. 24 hours later, the dogs were killed and the extent of myocardial necrosis was determined histologically. The LVEDP, arterial pressure and heart rate were markedly lower in the ginsenosides group. Electrocardiographic findings of myocardial ischemia were significantly improved in the ginsenosides group. 8 controls developed malignant arrhythmia after reperfusion, but none in ginsenosides group. The myocardial ultrastructure can be protected by ginsenosides during the period of ischemia and reperfusion. The infarct size in saline group was 22.7 +/- 3.2% while in the ginsenosides group it was 5.2 +/- 1.3% (P less than 0.05). These results show that ginsenosides can protect the ischemic myocardium and reperfusion injury of myocardium.

Abstract
The response properties of a class of motion detectors (Reichardt detectors) are investigated extensively here. Since the outputs of the detectors, responding to an image undergoing two-dimensional rigid translation, are dependent on both the image velocity and the image intensity distribution, they are nonuniform across the entire image, even though the object is moving rigidly as a whole. To achieve perceptual "oneness" in the rigid motion, we are led to contend that visual perception must take place in a space that is non-Euclidean in nature. We then derive the affine connection and the metric of this perceptual space. The Riemann curvature tensor is identically zero, which means that the perceptual space is intrinsically flat. A geodesic in this space is composed of points of constant image intensity gradient along a certain direction. The deviation of geodesics (which are perceptually "straight") from physically straight lines may offer an explanation to the perceptual distortion of angular relationships such as the Hering illusion.

Abstract
The acrosome of the stallion spermatozoon was visualized by indirect immunofluorescence with monoclonal antibody (18.6) which recognized an integral acrosomal membrane component. Localization was confirmed by electron microscopy using peroxidase labelled antibody. In fresh semen samples (n = 19), 73.9 +/- 9.1% of the spermatozoa from five fertile stallions displayed a uniform bright fluorescence over their acrosome region. In two semen samples from an infertile stallion only 28% and 35% of spermatozoa showed the same pattern of fluorescence. Spermatozoa from fertile stallions incubated for up to 12 hours in TALP medium maintained motility and exhibited a significant progressive loss of acrosomes as detected by immunofluorescence. Alternatively, a similar loss of acrosomes could be induced with calcium ionophore A23187 over a 90 minute incubation. Ultrastructural observations and incubation with zona-free hamster eggs indicated that only with ionophore treatment was immunofluorescent acrosome loss correlated with a physiological acrosome reaction, while prolonged sperm incubation led to degenerative membrane changes. It was concluded that, if carefully validated, immunofluorescent localization of the acrosome of stallion sperm with monoclonal antibody could be used to monitor the acrosome reaction. Furthermore, definitive acrosome visualization would be valuable in assessing semen quality.

Abstract
Spatially localized nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to investigate with transmural differentiation the response of myocardial high energy phosphate compounds and inorganic orthophosphate (Pi) to graded reductions in coronary blood flow caused by sustained coronary stenosis. In an open-chest model, localized 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra from five layers across the left ventricular wall were obtained simultaneously with transmural blood flow measurements during control conditions and during sustained graded reductions in intracoronary pressure. Both the blood flow, and high energy phosphate and Pi contents displayed transmural heterogeneity in response to decreases in intracoronary pressure. The subendocardial creatine phosphate (CP) level remained unchanged as blood flow was reduced to approximately 0.7 ml/min/g wet wt and decreased precipitously beyond this critical flow level. The relation between CP and flow in the midmyocardium and especially in the subepicardium was more complex. Subepicardial CP content did not correlate well with blood flow; however, in cases in which a coronary stenosis resulted in subendocardial hypoperfusion but subepicardial flow was near or above normal, a close correlation was present between subepicardial and subendocardial CP levels. ATP levels in all layers remained unaltered until blood flow was severely reduced. These results demonstrate that 1) the myocardial high energy phosphate and Pi levels at any transmural layer are not generally determined by O2 and blood flow limitation under basal conditions; 2) during subtotal coronary occlusion, increased oxygen extraction is able to meet myocardial needs until a critical level of stenosis is reached; 3) below a critical flow level, subendocardial CP and Pi contents are closely correlated with absolute subendocardial blood flow; and 4) in the presence of a coronary stenosis, subepicardial CP and Pi contents may change even in the absence of perfusion deficit secondary to loss of subendocardial function.

Abstract
In specimens from 75 cases of abdominal operation, it was found that ova of schistosoma had deposited in 108 lymphonodi, including 62 lymphoglandulae coelacae and 46 lymphoflandulae mesentericae. Quantity of eggs in lymphonodi and 4 conditions of reactions, i.e. sparse distribution, massive lumping, chronic egg-knotting and mixed presence, were studied and analyzed pathologically. The possible ways in which the ova reversely penetrate the lymph nodes through the vein are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract
The dynamics and mechanism of the premelting (L beta'-P beta') and main transitions (P beta'-L alpha) in fully hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine were examined by low-angle time-resolved x-ray diffraction (TRXRD) using microwave radiation to effect uniform, internal sample heating. Equilibrium and dynamic aspects of the transitions were investigated. The dynamic studies involved applying a temperature jump of sufficient amplitude to effect the two transitions sequentially. Our findings are as follows. (a) Microwave radiation has proven useful as a means for implementing rapid and uniform internal heating in temperature-jump studies of lipid-phase transition kinetics. (b) Heating rate can be controlled by adjusting microwave power setting. (c) The thermal expansion coefficient of the three lyotropic phases follows the sequence L beta' not equal to O greater than P beta' much greater than L alpha. (d) Regardless of temperature-jump amplitude and sample heating rate the P beta' phase was always in evidence as an intermediate between the L beta' and L alpha phases. (e) The degree of development of the P beta' phase was inversely proportional to temperature-jump amplitude and heating rate. (f) The shortest transit time recorded for the combined L beta'-P beta', and P beta'-L alpha transitions was less than 1 s. (g) Upon cooling from the L alpha phase the onset of the chain disorder/order transition was apparent as a dramatic change of slope in the scattering angle vs. time plot which is interpreted as arising from sample heating by the latent heat of the transition. (h) Based on the shape of the low-angle diffraction pattern of the P beta' phase the P beta'-L alpha transition appears to be reversible with no evidence of metastability as was observed in the slow scan TRXRD measurements of Tenchov et al. (1989. Biophys. J. 56:757-768).

Abstract
Cocrynebacterium parvum (CP) was injected around the tumor and tumor cells were inoculated subcutaneously with activated peritoneal macrophages. The effects on the growth and metastases of Lewis lung carcinoma in C57BL/6 mice were observed. Experimental results indicated that CP had significant inhibitory effect on the tumor growth and lung metastases. The cytotoxic effects of activated peritoneal macrophages in mice on target tumor cells (L5178Y) in vitro were studied with the technique of 3H-TdR assay. The proliferation of tumor cells was markedly inhibited by the activated peritoneal macrophages of CP. Experiments showed that the antitumor mechanism of CP was the mediation via activated cytotoxic macrophages. These results indicated that CP is an effective immunostimulant. These findings will provide a scientific basis for the clinical treatment of the primary and metastatic lung carcinoma.

Abstract
The authors used monoclonal antibody (CD3, CD4, CD8) and indirect immunofluorescence technic to study peripheral blood lymphocyte surface markers in patients with chronic pyelonephritis (CPN) and in normal controls. In CPN patients, a significant decrease in CD3, a lower percentage of CD4 and significant higher percentage of CD8 leading to a decrease in the CD4/CD8 ratio were noted. No differences could be observed between Spleen-Kidney Yang deficiency and Kidney Yin deficiency. The overall picture shown by the CPN patients was compatible to a cell-mediated immune response defection. The CPN patients were then treated with Zi-Ling capsule (ZLC)/transfer factor (TF) and various antibiotics for three months, during which period the authors found a significant increase in CD3, CD4, but no significant change in CD8. Symptoms such as lumbago, fatigue, frequency of urination were improved. A significant decreased in CD4 after cessation of treatment with ZLC and TF was observed. These observations suggested that both ZLC and TF could also improve the immune function, however, they mainly affect CD4 but not CD8 cells, and the effect lasted for only a short period. In conclusion, ZLC/TF and antibiotics administered together would serve as a useful therapeutic measure to be recommended for patients with CPN.

Abstract
The kinetics of the thermotropic lamellar gel (L beta')/lamellar liquid crystal (L alpha) and L alpha/inverted hexagonal (HII) phase transitions in fully hydrated dihexadecylphosphatidylethanolamine (DHPE) have been studied. Measurements were made by using time-resolved x-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to monitor progress of the transitions. In these studies microwave energy at 2.5 GHz was used to increase the sample temperature rapidly and uniformly through the phase transition regions. The L beta'/L alpha and L alpha/HII transitions of DHPE were examined under active microwave heating and passive cooling. The transitions were found to be repeatable and reversible, and to have an upper bound on the time required to complete the transition of less than 3 s. Regardless of the direction of the transition, both phase transitions appeared to be two-state with no accumulation of intermediates to within the sensitivity limits of the TRXRD method. The rate and amplitude of the temperature jump can be controlled by regulating microwave radiation input power. A temperature jump rate of 29 degrees C/s was obtained at a final microwave power setting of 120 W. Comparisons between previously reported fluid flow (Caffrey, M. 1985. Biochemistry. 24:4826-4844) and microwave heating studies suggest that the determination of limiting transit times will require faster heating.

Abstract
10 streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were treated with baicalin 150 mg/kg.d and liquid extract of licorice (LEL) 7.5 ml/kg.d (5 by each medicine) for a week. The results indicated that orally baicalin and LEL could dramatically reduce the sorbitol levels in red blood cells (123.7 +/- 28.6 to 72.5 +/- 21.8 and 116.9 +/- 25.2 to 80.5 +/- 23.8 nmol/g.Hb, respectively) without affecting blood glucose levels significantly. It is suggested that both medicines act by inhibiting aldose reductase.

Abstract
1. Somatotrophs were obtained from rat pituitary glands after dissociation, separation and enrichment on a continuous gradient of bovine serum albumin at unit gravity. Somatotrophs were enriched up to 85% in the heavy fractions (F8 and F9). 2. After identification by reverse hemolytic plaque assay, patch-clamp recording in the whole-cell mode was performed on somatotrophs. 3. Under voltage-clamp conditions, two types of Ca2+ currents were recorded. From a holding potential of -70 mV, depolarizing voltage steps to potentials more positive than -50 mV activated a current which rapidly inactivated and which was very sensitive to Ni2+ but not to Cd2+. This current corresponds to T-type current. Depolarizing steps to potentials more positive than -30 mV from a holding potential of -40 mV triggered a current which slowly inactivated and which was very sensitive to Cd2+ but not to Ni2+. This current corresponds to L-type current. 4. Application of somatostatin to the bath solution (10 nM) markedly reduced the amplitudes of both T- and L-type currents. Somatostatin decreased the conductance of L-type current without modifying its time- and voltage-dependent inactivation but its activation was not affected. However, somatostatin decreased the conductance of T-type currents, and also accelerated its time-dependent inactivation. Half-inactivation voltage of T-type current was shifted from -52 to -63 mV by somatostatin but no change was obtained in the current activation curve. 5. All these modifications in Ca2+ currents were abolished by a pre-treatment of the cultures with pertussis toxin (100 ng/ml, for 10 h). This pre-treatment also blocked the inhibitory effect of somatostatin on high-K(+)-stimulated growth hormone release. 6. Our results show that somatostatin acts on somatotrophs by attenuating the voltage-dependent Ca2+ currents. These effects may contribute to a somatostatin-induced reduction in [Ca2+]i and the subsequent decline in growth hormone release.

Abstract
Abstract Continuous cell perifusion and reverse hemolytic plaque assay have been used to show a regulatory action of 17 beta-estradiol on lactotroph responsiveness to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) or dopamine (DA) in vitro. Lactotroph-enriched cell cultures were obtained from adult male rats after trypsinization and mechanical dissociation followed by separation on a continuous bovine serum albumin gradient at unit gravity. After 7 days in culture, perifusion experiments showed that prolactin was continuously released and this release was increased by TRH and decreased by DA. Both TRH-induced secretion and DA-induced inhibition of prolactin release were dose-dependent with a half maximal effect obtained at 7 x 10(-9) M for TRH and at 10(-9) M for DA. It was shown by reverse hemolytic plaque assay that about 55% of the cells were plaque-forming (lysis of red blood cells) and were thus identified as prolactin-secreting cells. This was similar to a previous result obtained by immunofluorescent staining. Heterogeneity among lactotrophs with regard to the quantity of prolactin released was clearly shown by the varying plaque areas in all preparations. In order to make a quantitative analysis of the effect of 17 beta-estradiol on TRH-stimulation and DAergic inhibition in these heterogeneous prolactin cells, they were divided into two groups: large plaques (>/= 3 x 10(3)mu m(2)) constituted about 35% of all plaque-forming cells, and small plaques (< 3 x 10(3)mu m(2)), about 65%. Pretreatment with 17beta-estradiol (10(-8) M) either for 10 h or 48 h markedly increased TRH-stimulated prolactin release and decreased the inhibitory effect of DA both in perifusion and reverse hemolytic plaque assay experiments. However, these pretreatments did not change the values of half maximum dose for TRH and DA. TRH transformed about 7% of the small plaques into large plaques and this proportion was increased to 25% after 17beta-estradiol treatment. On the contrary, DA and its more stable analogue bromocriptine increased the percentage of small plaques by 10% to 15% but this effect was decreased after 17beta-estradiol treatment. We conclude that: 1) Normal rat pituitary lactotrophs show heterogeneity with respect to their spontaneous release and responsiveness to TRH and DA; 2) pretreatment with 17beta-estradiol increases the response to TRH and decreases the response to DA without altering the doses at which they have half maximal effect; 3) there is no significant difference between the effect of 17beta-estradiol obtained after 10 h and after 48 h pretreatment.

Abstract
The authors report the results of penetrating keratoplasty combined with cataract extraction in 50 cases. The rate of transparent grafts was 62% after an average follow-up of 19 months. 60% of the patients restored their vision to 0.1 and better. The rate of transparent grafts and visual improvement did not correlate with the mode of cataract extraction; however, the extracapsular procedure had less vitreous during operation than the intracapsular modality did. The authors recommend that the combined operation be adopted for patients with corneal opacity and cataract, and preferably using the extracapsular mode.

Abstract
An image analysis system was developed for stereotactic neurosurgery that allows the simultaneous display of brain images from different imaging devices obtained in different orientations. The system is based on a stereotactic frame and a microcomputer and features an easy user interface together with point registration and region of interest analysis in three-dimensional space. A dynamic multi-image environment allows for simultaneous display of magnetic resonance, computed tomography, digital subtraction angiography, and positron emission tomography images in multiple windows, adjusted for common coordinates with reference to stereotactic frame fiducial markers. Linkages between images allow information interchange between different modalities and different views: Points and regions defined in one image can be transferred to others, and cursor coordinates in one image can be calculated and dynamically projected in other images. Phantom studies show that the system distortions are minor and that the system is suitable for clinical use. The system provides exceptional advantages over previous imaging procedures for stereotactic surgery.

Abstract
This article reported the effects of 3 different dosages of NaF on the rats when they were exposed for 30-90 days. The results showed that many toxic indexes had significant changes when high dose of NaF (3.37 mg/kg) was given to rats for 30 days. Some toxic indexes had significant changes when medium dose of NaF (1.12 mg/kg) was given to rats for 90 days. But no significant difference was observed when compared to the normal control group, when low dose of NaF (0.37 mg/kg) was given to rats for 90 days.

Abstract
Transcription factor IIA (TFIIA) is a necessary component of many RNA polymerase II transcription complexes. Assembly of the transcription complex begins when TFIIA interacts with the promoter. We have previously purified wheat germ TFIIA to homogeneity and demonstrated that it substitutes for human TFIIA in a human in vitro transcription system which utilizes the adenovirus-2 major late promoter (Ad-2 MLP). We now show, by gel retardation assays, that wheat TFIIA interacts with the Ad-2 MLP. Extensively purified human (HeLa) TFIIA interacts with the Ad-2 MLP similarly. Both wheat and human TFIIA interact with a DNA fragment comprising the minimal promoter region (-51/+32) but not with upstream or downstream regions. With both TFIIAs multiple complexes form; the fastest wheat TFIIA/DNA complex appears to be larger than the corresponding human TFIIA/DNA complex. Limited point mutation analysis of the Ad-2 MLP demonstrates that changes at -30 (TATAA region), +1, and -1 diminish TFIIA binding, but a change at -40 does not. DNA footprint analysis of this region is not definitive, but does indicate that following TFIIA binding there are changes in the pattern of hypersensitive sites.
