Heat, humidity and pyodermas

The effect of humidity and atmospheric heat on the incidence of pyodermas was studied by recording the out-patient department attendance of these patients and general skin attendance and correlating the percentage with the climatic variations. There was a definite increase in incidence of pyodermas during the months of June, July and August. During this period atmospheric temperature and relative humidity were also fairly high. The hydration of stratum corneum, which in turn is influenced by heat and humidity, is responsible for excessive growth of bacteria and higher frequency of pyogenic skin infections.

The role of bacteria in anhidrosis

The reasons for individual susceptibility to become anhidrotic on occlusion were studied. It was observed that an individual’s skin which favours the growth of resident flora on occlusion is more prone to get anhidrosis by the same process. It was also observed that sites where growth of resident organisms was suppressed by antibacterial agents did not show the same degree of anhidrosis as seen on control sites. This indicates a causal relationship between bacterial growth and anhidrosis.

Determination of the Pressure Drop Optimum Pipe Size for a Two-Phase Slug Flow in an Inclined Pipe

A simple model of two-phase slug flow in inclined pipes is proposed. The model parameters are determined experimentally using five different size copper pipes at 5, 10, 15 deg inclinations on an air-water mixture at one atmosphere with up flow. The model predicts the total pressure gradient due to the sum of gravity and wall shear stresses. An investigation of the relationship between pressure gradient and pipe size results in an optimum pipe size at which the pressure gradient is minimum. A comparison between the simplified model predictions and experimental measurements shows a good agreement in the total pressure drop.
