Abstract
Three novel non-CS antigens have been identified on P. falciparum and P. berghei sporozoites and exoerythrocytic parasites. CSP-2 is a sporozoite surface protein common to P. falciparum and P. berghei that elicits antibody-mediated protection, and is also found within P. berghei EE parasites. LSA is a P. falciparum EE-specific antigen localized within the parasitophorous vacuole. LSA-2 is a P. berghei EE-specific antigen, localized on the parasitophorous vacuole membrane, that protected mice to P. berghei sporozoite challenge, and elicited cytotoxic T cells that killed P. berghei EE parasites in vitro.

Abstract
The effect of gamma irradiation on the melanotic encapsulation response of Aedes aegypti black eye Liverpool strain against inoculated Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae (mff) was assessed at 1, 2, 3, and 6 days postinoculation (PI). Mosquitoes received 6000 rad from a 137Cs source (Shepard Mark I irradiator) at 3 days postemergence and were inoculated with 15-20 mff 24 hr later. These mosquitoes were compared to nonirradiated controls that also were inoculated with 15-20 mff at 3 days postemergence. The immune response was significantly reduced in irradiated mosquitoes as compared with controls at all days PI. Although the response was significantly inhibited compared with controls, irradiated mosquitoes were still capable of eliciting a response against 69% of recovered mff at 6 days PI. External gamma irradiation did not significantly affect the proliferation of hemocytes associated with the melanotic encapsulation response of A. aegypti. The number of circulating hemocytes increased in irradiated mosquitoes in response to inoculated mff in a manner similar to nonirradiated, inoculated controls. Hemocyte monophenol oxidase activity, however, was significantly reduced in gamma-irradiated mosquitoes at 12 hr PI as compared with controls. The reduced immunological capacity of irradiated mosquitoes might be related to an interference with gene activity required for the synthesis or activation of enzymes that are directly or indirectly involved in the biochemical processes associated with the production of melanotic substances that sequester mff.

Abstract
Significant decrease of serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) was mentioned in our previous report (1981). The results of further studies on lipoprotein patterns of 425 cases of various CVD are presented. Reduction of HDL level (including both HDL-C and apolipoprotein A1) was observed not only in the group of patients hospitalized due to apoplexy (cerebral infarction or hemorrhage), but also in patients under normal living conditions. The latter group included patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency, transient ischemic attacks mild residual neuro-muscular symptoms after recovery from stroke. It is surmised that HDL lowering was present early in CVD cases before attack of apoplexy and is one of the risk factors of CVD The degree of HDL lowering in CVD groups were much more marked than that in our reported cases of coronary heart disease (CHD). The prominent change of lipoprotein pattern in CHD group was elevation of apoB and total cholesterol (TC); however, apoB and TC were approximately normal or significantly lower in certain CVD groups.

Abstract
One hundred and twelve new cases with Graves' disease were treated by tapazole for 6 months and followed-up for another 12 months in a prospective study. One hundred and eleven cases completed the whole course of study, and only one failed to be followed up. The results of the follow-up for 12 mon showed that the remission rate was 41.4% (46/111) and relapse rate was 58.6% (65/111). The present study indicated that the remission or relapse was related with serum levels of T3 before treatment, shrank goiter and disappearance of goiter bruit during the treatment as well as thyroid suppression rate, but not related to sex, age, period of illness before therapy or severity of the disease. It is suggested that a 6-mon antithyroid drug therapy instead of traditional long term therapy may be suitable for those patients who are with a reduced goiter and disappeared goiter bruit during the antithyroid therapy, and suppressible thyroid up-take by T3 and whose serum levels of T3 before treatment are not very high. So the patients may benefit from the short-term therapy. They are not only able to obtain a prolonged remission but also save time and money.

Abstract
85 cases of virologically proved viral myocarditis were followed up for 96.45 +/- 23.7 months for a better understanding of the late prognosis of this disease. Among these cases, 63 (74.1%) were cured, 14 (16.5%) remained with sequelae, 8 (3.5%) became chronic and 5 (5.9%) of the patients died. Most of the abnormal findings, i.e. physical signs, x-ray, ECG and UCG changes, originally existing on admission of the survived patients disappeared. The clinical features of the chronic cases resemble those of cardiomyopathy. The main causes of death were heart failure and sudden death. In order to reduce mortality, sequelae and chronicity, the importance of early virological examination, early clinical diagnosis and early and persistent treatment are stressed.

Abstract
The responses of blood pressure (BP) and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system to captopril were studied in 9 patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) including 7 cases of idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA) and 2 cases of aldosterone-producing adrenal adenoma (APA). 2 hrs after the administration of 25 mg captopril, plasma renin activity (PRA) increased significantly, plasma angiotensin II (PAII) and aldosterone concentration (PAC) declined remarkably, BP reduced to normal in 4 of 6 patients in IHA, no changes in PRA, PAII and PAC in patients with APA but significant BP drop in patient with APA. The results suggest sensitivity of the hyperplastic adrenal gland to AII is heightened. It is helpful in the diagnosis of PA, BP can be well controlled with combined captopril (75 mg/d) and small dose of spironolactone (60 mg/d) in most of the IHA.

Abstract
The ultrastructural characteristics of platelets and the quantitative analysis of membrane glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa quick-release reaction induced by high shear stress (HSS) were studied with transmission electron microscope and immunocolloidal gold staining. The results showed that platelets were activated and aggregated by HSS (50 dynes/cm2 or 100 dynes/cm2). Besides, HSS also caused a special platelet quick-release reaction which was called granule-membrane-fused lytic release (GFLR). GFLR differed from releases I and II which were induced by ADP and thrombin respectively. Granules were released quickly and lysis occurred when all granules had been discharged in GFLR. GFLR is a special form of platelet quick release induced by HSS and is called release III by the authors. In the process of platelet activation and lysis, the gold particles of GPIIb/IIIa were increasingly condensed. The possible reasons of increased surface expression of GPIIb/IIIa stimulated by HSS are also discussed.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of acute administration of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, on extracellular efflux of dopamine (DA) and its metabolites as measured by in vivo microdialysis in nucleus accumbens of conscious, freely-moving rats. delta 9-THC, at low doses (0.5-1.0 mg/kg), which significantly enhance brain stimulation reward (intracranial self-stimulation), significantly increased DA efflux in nucleus accumbens. Augmentation of DA efflux by delta 9-THC was abolished by removal of calcium (Ca++) ions from the perfusion fluid, indicating a Ca(++)-dependence of delta 9-THC's action. Augmentation of DA efflux by delta 9-THC was either totally blocked or significantly attenuated by doses of naloxone as low as 0.1 mg/kg. Given the postulated role of mesocorticolimbic DA circuits in mediating and/or modulating brain stimulation reward, the present data raise the possibility that marijuana's rewarding effects, and hence its euphorigenic effects and abuse potential, may be related to pharmacological augmentation of presynaptic DA mechanisms. Additionally, the DA mechanisms enhanced by marijuana appear to be modulated by an endogenous opioid peptide system.

Abstract
Tissue fluid and plasma oncotic pressure levels were measured in an unselected group of 13 patients presenting with congestive heart failure. Patients had a mean serum albumin of 3.6 g/dl +/- (SD) 0.35; serum oncotic pressure was 22.23 +/- 1.8 mm Hg; tissue fluid (lower leg) oncotic pressure was 0.985 +/- 0.34 mm Hg. The oncotic pressure gradient between plasma and tissue fluid was 21.25 Hg +/- 1.7. This is about 10 mm Hg greater than delta pi in normal man. The high value in congestive heart failure is a mechanism to protect against the formation of edema. The possible mechanisms responsible for the formation of edema in congestive heart failure are discussed.

Abstract
Some reports indicate that sperm from different males differ in capacitation time, and other reports suggest that freezing sperm may affect their capacitation time. These two variables were specifically studied in rabbits in a fertility trial with 96 does inseminated with approximately 1.6 million motile fresh or frozen sperm from three different bucks at 15, 10, 5, and 0 h before expected ovulation. Fresh semen averaged 84% live (unstained) sperm and 88% had normal acrosomes; corresponding values for frozen sperm were 44% and 54%. On the basis of does that became pregnant, average litter size with fresh semen was 5.5 and with frozen semen was 4.8 (p greater than 0.05), but overall, does bred with frozen semen produced fewer young (p less than 0.05). On the basis of total does and total semen, average litter size from insemination at 15, 10, 5, and 0 h was 2.8, 4.2, 3.8, and 1.7, and average litter size for the three bucks was 4.0, 1.8, and 3.6. There was no interaction of type of semen (fresh or frozen) with the other variables in the model (p greater than 0.05). Bucks and time of insemination affected both the proportion of does that were pregnant and litter size (p less than 0.01). A major interaction between buck and time of insemination (p less than 0.01) was due apparently to both differential sperm survival and probable capacitation time among bucks. This major interaction should be considered in designing in vitro and in vivo fertility studies, and for selecting males for use in artificial insemination.

Abstract
It is considered that a decrease of the ratio of polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE) to normochromatic erythrocytes (NCE) (P/N) in the micronucleus test is an indicator of bone marrow toxicity induced by mutagens. However, the exact meaning of fluctuation in the P/N ratio is not yet known. We have studied this point by counting the total number of erythrocytes and nucleated cells in the bone marrow following various treatments. The P/N ratio decreased gradually with time after administration of mitomycin C. Our data suggest that the decrease of P/N ratio was attributable to an increase in the numbers of the denominator, i.e. NCE, caused by rapid differentiation and multiplication or denucleation of erythroblasts which remained in the bone marrow instead of entering the peripheral blood stream. A decrease of P/N ratio was also observed in the early phase after administration of erythropoietin, an agent which induces differentiation and multiplication of erythroblasts. This phenomenon might result from an increase of PCE delivery into the blood circulation. However, following the initial decrease, the P/N ratio increased gradually 48 h after administration of erythropoietin. It is supposed that this increase probably resulted from an increase in PCE in the bone marrow due to the direct effects of erythropoietin on erythropoiesis. The drastic change in erythropoiesis in the bone marrow induced by either mutagen or erythropoietin treatment will affect the fluctuations of the P/N ratio or the number of micronucleated erythrocytes per non-micronucleated erythocytes in the micronucleus test. This contrasts with the original explanation for such fluctuations which attributed them to replenishment of the marrow by peripheral blood.

Abstract
A nonlinear ESS model is put forward, that is, a nonnegative exponential ESS model. For a simple case, we discuss the existence, uniqueness, and stability of an ESS. As an application of the model, we give a quantitative analysis of frequency-dependent selection in population genetics when the rare type has an advantage.
