Abstract
Quantitative analysis was performed using computerized morphometry on the relationships between residual beta cells, pancreatic exocrine glands, and islet cell antibodies (ICA) in 14 pancreata of insulin-dependent diabetic (IDDM) patients. Both pancreatic exocrine glands and beta cells were markedly reduced in weight in IDDM patients compared with non-insulin-dependent diabetic (NIDDM) patients or nondiabetic controls. beta cells were preserved in six cases and were completely abolished in eight cases. In nine IDDM pancreata weighed at autopsy, the weights of pancreatic exocrine glands in six patients with either no or virtually no residual beta cells (32.3 +/- 1.6 g) were greater than those in three patients with residual beta cells (23.1 +/- 2.5 g, P < .05). Infiltration of lymphocytes positive for leukocyte common antigen (LCA) around the islet was observed in only one case with ICA and residual beta cells. Infiltration of LCA-positive lymphocytes around pancreatic acinar cells was observed in 50% (six of 12) of patients examined. The weight of pancreatic exocrine glands in patients with LCA-positive lymphocyte infiltration (26.2 +/- 2.3 g) was lower than that in patients without this condition (33.2 +/- 2.4 g, P < .05). Pancreatic cytokeratin autoantibodies (PKA) were detected in four of 10 patients examined. In addition, all four ICA-positive patients had residual beta cells, while only one of seven ICA-negative patients had residual beta cells (P = .03).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Studies were conducted on platelet-activating factor (PAF) in male reproductive organs. Total lipids were extracted from the seminal vesicles, and PAF was purified by silicic column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and HPLC. PAF activities in the seminal vesicles of guinea pigs and rats as measured by assay of platelet aggregation were 0.26 and 0.25 ng PAF/mumol original phospholipids. These activities were inhibited by the specific PAF antagonists CV6209 and L652,731. In guinea pigs, PAF activity decreased to 50% and 31% of the normal level 2 wk and 4 wk, respectively, after castration. The activity increased to 136% of the normal level on administration of 1 mg of testosterone propionate every day for 1 wk beginning 2 wk after castration, but decreased to 74% of the control level on administration of vehicle. Furthermore, administration of 100 IU of hCG every other day to guinea pigs resulted in increased activity, to 132% (p < 0.05) and 154% (p < 0.01) of the activity in vehicle-treated animals on Days 1 and 3, respectively. Electron microscopic studies showed changes in the rough endoplasmic reticulum of the epithelial cells of the seminal vesicles in castrated guinea pigs. (The rough endoplasmic reticulum is involved in PAF biosynthesis.) PAF activity was also demonstrated in tissues of the testis, epididymis, and vas deferens of guinea pigs and rats, and in the prostate of rats. Thus PAF may play important physiological roles in male reproductive organs.

Abstract
Fifty-five patients with microcephaly (head circumference < -2SD) were identified. The 55 patients were divided into two groups, consisting of group 1 (34 cases) in which genetic causes were considered primary, and group 2 (21 cases) in which intrauterine and/or postnatal acquired factors were thought to be responsible. MRI abnormalities were present in 80% of the total series: 68 and 100% in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In group 1, migration abnormalities were the most prominent and mental retardation was the major neurological handicap, while in group 2, hydranencephaly and infarction secondary to brain circulatory derangements were the most frequently observed abnormalities, with severe multiple handicaps such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and mental retardation seen. Head MRI was considered indispensable in the investigation of the causes of microcephaly and in determining the neurological prognosis of affected patients.

Abstract
We experienced two patients of left atrial myxoma with coronary arterial lesion. One patient, who was a 52-year-old female, was transferred to our institute with the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. The coronary angiogram showed an abrupt 99% stenosis of posterolateral branch of circumflex artery with no atherosclerotic lesion, and the echocardiography revealed a left atrial myxoma disturbing the blood flow across the mitral valve. She was in congestive heart failure with pulmonary hypertension, and underwent an emergency removal of the myxoma under cardiopulmonary bypass. Another patient, who was a 70-year-old male, was admitted to our institute with the chief complaint of chest pain. The coronary angiogram showed an 75% atherosclerotic stenosis of the right coronary artery, and the echocardiography revealed the left atrial myxoma. He received a removal of myxoma and a coronary artery bypass grafting simultaneously. These 2 patients went a good postoperative course and live a lively life with no local recurrence. In this paper, the surgical treatment of left atrial myxoma with coronary arterial lesion was reviewed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore roles of endogenous atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in blood pressure and volume regulation, we examined the effects of a newly developed ANP antagonist, HS-142-1 (HS) in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. METHODS AND RESULTS We examined 1) the effects of HS on ANP- or brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)-induced reductions in renal vascular resistance (RVR) of rat isolated perfused kidneys, 2) the effects of HS on cyclic GMP (cGMP) production in rat cultured vascular smooth muscle cells pretreated with ANP or BNP, and 3) the renal and systemic effects of HS in DOCA-salt-treated rats and control rats. We found that 1) HS dose-dependently reversed ANP- or BNP-induced decreases in RVR; 2) ANP or BNP at 100 nM caused an eightfold increase in cGMP production. These increases in cGMP were inhibited by HS in a dose-dependent fashion, and 300 micrograms/ml HS decreased cGMP to the control level. HS alone did not influence RVR or cGMP production; and 3) DOCA-salt rats showed higher plasma concentrations of ANP (198 versus 75 pg/ml) and BNP (23.7 versus 2.7 pg/ml, each p < 0.01) than the control rats. Bolus administration of 8 mg/kg HS elevated blood pressure by 8% (p < 0.01). This rise in blood pressure was attributed to an increase in systemic vascular resistance (+14%, p < 0.05). Conversely, urinary excretion of sodium (-41%), glomerular filtration rate (-27%), and plasma (-77%) and urinary cGMP (-69%, each p < 0.01) were decreased by administration of 8 mg/kg HS. These effects were dose dependent in DOCA-salt rats but slight or negligible in the control rats. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that endogenous ANP and BNP may be involved in the regulation of blood pressure and body fluid volume in DOCA-salt rats in which ANP and BNP secretion is augmented.

Abstract
Some evidence suggests an important role of mononuclear cells at the bone remodeling sites in the coupling of bone resorption to bone formation. Therefore, we examined effects of human monocytes-conditioned medium (CM) treated with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1.25(OH)2D3] on the proliferation of osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. 1,25(OH)2D3 (10(-11)-10(-8) directly inhibited [3H]thymidine incorporation (TdR) into MC3T3-E1 cells in a dose-related fashion. 24,25(OH)2D3 and 25(OH)D3 (10(-8) and 10(-7) M) had only modest inhibitory effect, compared to that of 1,25(OH)2D3. CM, per se, on the other hand, significantly stimulated TdR, whereas CM obtained from monocytes treated with 1,25(OH)2D3(10(-10) and 10(-8) M) significantly inhibited TdR. Treatment of monocytes with 10(-7) M 25(OH)D3 significantly inhibited CM-induced stimulation of TdR to a lesser degree, compared to that of 10(-8) M 1,25(OH)2D3 and treatment of monocytes with 10(-7) M 24,25(OH)2D3 did not affect CM-induced stimulation of TdR. The inhibition of TdR by 1,25(OH)2D3-treated CM was significantly blocked by 10(-6) M indomethacin, an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis. Present data first indicate that 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibited osteoblast proliferation not only directly but also indirectly through modulating the release of local factors as to bone remodeling from monocytes, and also suggest that its indirect effect via monocytes was mediated at least in part through prostaglandin synthesis.

Abstract
Cell bodies and central terminals of trigeminal primary afferent neurons innervating the mandibular molar and incisor tooth pulps were labeled by injecting various neuroanatomical tracers into these tooth pulps. The cell bodies of major constituents of primary neurons innervating the tooth pulp, cornea, and cutaneous branch of the mylohyoid nerve were large (> or = 500 microns2, 65%), medium (300-400 microns2, 35%), and small (100-200 microns2, 34%), respectively. Those innervating the tooth pulp (tooth pulp cells) had the Nissl pattern characteristic of large light cells of the A type, while those innervating the cornea were small dark cells of the B type. Thirty percent of the tooth pulp cells exhibited histochemically demonstrable carbonic anhydrase activity. The transganglionic transport of HRP-WGA indicated marked concentration of central terminals of the tooth pulp primaries in the rostral subdivisions of the brain stem sensory trigeminal nuclear complex. In contrast, central terminals of the corneal primaries were concentrated in the medullary dorsal horn.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics of oxalate were studied in normal and nephrectomized rats with the use of radioisotope-labelled oxalate. The disappearance of [14C]oxalate from the plasma was analyzed with a two-compartment open model. The pharmacokinetic parameters of oxalate were compared with those for inulin. In normal rats, the plasma half-life of the elimination of oxalate was 0.33 +/- 0.06 h and that for inulin was 0.26 +/- 0.05 h (n = 10, mean +/- SD). The volume of distribution for oxalate was 56.7 +/- 6.80 and that for inulin 34.0 +/- 4.79 ml/100 g body weight, indicating that oxalate has access to additional compartments besides the extracellular volume. The total clearance of oxalate was 1.2 times higher than that for inulin. In nephrectomized rats, however, the plasma half-life of the elimination of oxalate was 1.85 +/- 0.34 h (n = 7, mean +/- SD) and that for inulin was 4.26 +/- 0.78 h. The total clearance of oxalate was 177 +/- 29 and that for inulin was 30 +/- 5 microliters/min/100 g body weight. In order to identify the extrarenal elimination route of oxalate, the bile of nephrectomized rats was collected. The hepatic clearance of oxalate was 31.2 +/- 2.7 microliters/min/100 g body weight. The biliary excretion of oxalate accounts for 17.6% of the total clearance in nephrectomized rats. Thus, other elimination processes of oxalate besides renal and hepatic clearance take place.

Abstract
Three cases are reported of the association of childhood onset of thoracic aortic calcification with mucocutaneous candidiasis, endocrine dysfunction and recurrent non-fungal pulmonary disease. The aortic calcification affects the thoracic aorta and the low lumbar aorta and common iliac arteries, sparing the mid-lumbar aorta and its major branches. Ischemic signs and symptoms of the head and neck and lower limbs are absent. This peculiar, slowly progressive vascular calcification, although unexplained to date, appears to be a non-random part of the more common candidiasis-endocrinopathy syndrome.

Abstract
Induction of Fos, a proto-oncogene c-fos protein product, was immunohistochemically examined in the rat brainstem by using pure tone stimuli (0.25 kHz, 4kHz and 8 kHz) at 60 and 80 dB sound pressure levels for 30 min. In comparison with non-stimulated control rats, the brainstem of sound-stimulated rats exhibited distinct Fos-labeled neuronal cell nuclei in i) the ascending auditory nuclei, ii) the brainstem sites which receive afferents from the auditory nuclei, i.e. the pretectum and rostroventrolateral reticular nucleus, iii) the parvocellular part of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus, lateral reticular nucleus, ventral border region of the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and the medial vestibular and spinal vestibular nuclei, all of which lack established auditory projections, and iv) the brainstem sites where some Fos-labeled neurons were present in controls. Sound stimulation at 80 dB led to widespread Fos-labeling in all these sites. Sound stimulation at 60 dB caused a decrease in number of positive cells in the brainstem sites and yielded a tone-dependent subregional distribution pattern in the dorsal cochlear nucleus and central nucleus of the inferior colliculus.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the direct vasopressor effects of erythropoietin between spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The aortic rings from SHR or WKY were suspended in tissue baths coupled with tension-recording devices. High concentrations of recombinant human erythropoietin (more than 20 U/ml) induced vasoconstriction in the aortic ring of genetically hypertensive SHR. Furthermore, only in SHR, 10 U/ml erythropoietin enhanced contraction induced by 10(-7) M norepinephrine (+145% vs +121%, p < 0.04) and reduced relaxation by 10(-7) M acetylcholine (-69% vs -96%, p < 0.05). On the other hand, erythropoietin did not influence the contractility of aortic ring in normotensive WKY. These results suggest that erythropoietin exhibits its direct vasopressor effect preferentially in the blood vessels of genetically hypertensive animals.

Abstract
The concentrations of oncopterin, N2-(3-aminopropyl)biopterin, a new pterin compound, were determined in urine from various cancer patients by HPLC on a reverse-phase or ion-exchange column. The concentration of oncopterin increased after acid hydrolysis, indicating that it exists as an amide in urine. The oncopterin concentrations were very low in the urine of healthy controls. Among the urine samples examined, those from cases of solid cancers, e.g., hepatomas, prostatic cancer and bladder cancer, exhibited very high levels; and those from cases of blood cancers, e.g., myelomas, acute myelocytic leukemia, and lymphomas, showed moderate increases. Oncopterin may thus be a new biochemical marker of some types of cancer.

Abstract
A rare case of dermatomyositis and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), which responded dramatically to high-dose gamma globulin and vincristine is presented. A 42-year old man was admitted for evaluation of polymyalgia and skin change of the face and fingers. Findings of muscle biopsy was consistent with the diagnosis of dermatomyositis. During the course of his hospital stay, he had diffuse purpura, hematuria, high fever, and his consciousness became disturbed. The hemoglobin level and the platelet count decreased. Based on microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and neurological abnormality, a clinical diagnosis of TTP was made. Therapy included high-dose gamma globulin, vincristine, corticosteroids and dextran. One week later, his consciousness became clear, hematological findings improved, and prolonged remission has been maintained for more than 19 months at the time of this report. This case suggests that gamma globulin and vincristine are effective in some with TTP cases. Case reports that have appeared in the Japanese literature are summarized and reviewed in terms of treatment.

Abstract
A rare case of a 71-year-old man with malignant oncocytoma is presented. The tumour was found in the left parotid region with enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. The resected parotid mass consisted of three discrete nodules, each histologically characterized by a uniform proliferation of oncocytic tumour cells. The patient underwent repeated operations for recurrences and metastases, and eventually died of acute pneumonia 18 months after the first admission. Metastases to the lymph nodes, ribs, spine and liver had been clinically pointed out. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were positive for alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, lactoferrin, secretory component and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), while they were negative for S-100 protein and HHF35 (muscle specific actin). Ultrastructural pictures disclosed numerous mitochondria in the cytoplasm of the tumour cells, revealing neither myofibrils nor secretory granules. These findings therefore support the concept that this tumour is of a glandular epithelial origin.

Abstract
Direct argon or thermal laser angioplasty (LA) was evaluated for thrombogenicity using angioscopy, and compared with balloon angioplasty (BA). In each of 8 dogs, 4 segments (both proximal and distal iliac arteries) were treated by laser-thermal and/or balloon angioplasty. One segment was treated by balloon angioplasty and 3 other segments were treated with either thermal LA with 7 W using a "Hot-Tip" laser probe (2.0 mm), or BA and thermal LA, or a special optical probe which emits a 3 W argon laser beam. Mean percent area stenosis by thrombus was 44 +/- 23 in balloon-dilated, 23 +/- 21 in thermally-treated and balloon-dilated, 3 +/- 3 in thermally-treated, and 1 +/- 4 in directly-lased segments at 30 min. It was 62 +/- 28 in balloon dilated, 31 +/- 29 in thermally-treated and balloon-dilated, 5 +/- 6 in thermally-treated, and 1 +/- 2 in directly-lased segments at 60 min. Balloon-inflated segments had the highest percent area stenosis which was significantly higher than that of either the direct laser or thermally-treated segments (p < 0.0005). Histology showed thermal necrosis in laser-treated sites, and wall tears in BA sites. Thus, LA can provide a less thrombogenic arterial surface than BA.

Abstract
PAF decreases cardiac contractility and blood pressure. To characterize the cardiac PAF receptor, we screened a human ventricular cDNA library in a low stringency condition, using a PCR product derived from guinea pig lung PAF receptor as a probe. Four clones were obtained and named HV1-4. In Xenopus oocytes injected with cRNA derived from HV3 or 4 but not from HV1 or 2, PAF elicited a Ca(2+)-activated Cl- current. HV3 and HV4 were duplicate clones, encoding a 342 amino-acid polypeptide which was identical to that of the human leukocyte PAF receptor. However, a portion of the 5' untranslated region of HV3 (or 4) was different from that of the leukocyte receptor cDNA. Northern blotting of human ventricles and atria using the HV3 insert showed a single band of approximately 4 kb. These results suggest a tissue-specific translational mechanism responsible for regulation of the expression of the PAF receptor mRNA in these tissues.

Abstract
We wished to clarify the effects of a newly developed calcium antagonist, manidipine hydrochloride (HCl), on renal microcirculation in hypertensive rats by using the micropuncture technique. Oral administration of manidipine HCl for 2 months reduced systemic blood pressure (BP), did not change the single-nephron glomerular filtration rate (SNGFR), but increased the SNG plasma flow (SNGPF). Moreover, the glomerular transcapillary hydraulic pressure difference (delta P), which is assumed to be the parameter most related to development of glomerulosclerosis, was significantly reduced. Both afferent and efferent arteriolar resistance (RA and RE) were reduced. Intravenous (i.v.) infusion of manidipine HCl (20 micrograms/kg) decreased systemic BP but did not change SNGFR, SNGPF, or delta P. Both RA and RE were also significantly decreased. These results indicate that chronic administration of manidipine HCl increases renal blood flow (RBF) by dilating the afferent arterioles and improves glomerular hypertension by dilating the efferent arterioles. Thus, manidipine HCl might be a beneficial antihypertensive agent for patients with renal diseases. Because acute i.v. infusion of manidipine HCl did not change delta P, apparently time must elapse before glomerular hypertension is corrected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A mathematical model of modulated ventricular parasystole based on the relation between the coupling interval and the preceding RR interval was developed in an attempt to distinguish between parasystolic automaticity and other mechanisms. MATHEMATICAL MODEL: The relation between the coupling interval and the preceding RR interval was examined by plotting the coupling interval of each extrasystole against the preceding RR interval (coupling interval/RR diagram). The coupling interval/RR diagrams obtained from simulations with various modulation modes suggested that the parasystolic mechanism was likely when the dots representing extrasystoles appeared as discrete clusters. In contrast, a linear horizontal accumulation of dots indicated a non-parasystolic mechanism. CLINICAL OBSERVATION To verify the validity of the simulations, 24 hour electrocardiographic recordings from 60 patients with frequent ventricular extrasystoles (> 1000/day) were analysed to determine whether the extrasystoles showed intrinsic periodicity. Intrinsic periodicity indicative of a parasystolic mechanism was seen in 14 (93%) of 15 patients in whom the coupling interval/RR diagram was characteristic of a parasystolic mechanism. When the coupling interval did not change (variability < 200 ms) over a wide range of RR intervals (> 700 ms) intrinsic periodicity was never identified (0/17). Parasystolic automaticity was the likely mechanism in 11 of the remaining 28 patients (39.3%) in whom coupling interval/RR diagrams were not definitive. CONCLUSION These data indicate that definite patterns of coupling interval/RR diagrams can be used to distinguish between parasystolic and non-parasystolic mechanisms.

Abstract
Calretinin-immunoreactivity (CR-ir) was examined in the rat oro-facial and pharyngeal tissues using an immunofluorescence method. CR-ir was distributed in the entire size range of trigeminal ganglion neurons. CR-ir was also observed in nerve fibers surrounding neuronal cell bodies in autonomic ganglia, and in nerve endings in the lip, tongue, incisal papilla, soft palate, pharynx and epiglottis. CR-immunoreactive nerve endings were all in close proximity to the epithelium, and classified into 2 types; simple (free nerve ending) and taste-bud-related types. In the salivary gland, positive nerve fibers were seen around large excretory ducts. The present study indicates that viscerosensory (probably including gustatory) nerve fibers innervating the oral and pharyngeal tissues contain CR, while somotosensory nerve fibers innervating the facial skin are devoid of CR.

Abstract
A full-length cDNA encoding a subunit of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) was isolated from a developing seed expression library of the C3 plant Glycine max. The corresponding mRNA is present at similar levels in leaf, stem, root and developing seed. Two potential start codons exist, and the activity of protein initiated from the first such codon could be subject to regulation by protein kinase. Sequence comparison shows a similar upstream start codon in the case of the Ppc2 gene from Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, previously assumed to lack the sequences necessary for phosphorylation. The soybean encoded protein tends to resemble other 'C3-type' PEPC proteins more closely than those implicated in C4 or crassulacean acid metabolism.

Abstract
To investigate the cellular mechanism for the synthesis and secretion of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), we examined the effects of vasoactive agents on the secretion rates and gene expression of ANP and BNP in cultured rat atrial cells. Endothelin (10(-7) M, +61%), 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA, 10(-6) M, +62%), the calcium ionophore A23187 (10(-6) M, +95%), and Bay K 8644 (10(-6) M, +34%) (p < 0.05 each) all increased the secretion of ANP into the culture media in a dose-dependent fashion. On the other hand, endothelin (10(-7) M, +57%) and TPA (10(-6) M, +55%) (p < 0.01 each) increased the secretion of BNP in a dose-dependent manner, whereas A23187 (10(-6) M, -45%, p < 0.001) suppressed the secretion of BNP in a dose-dependent manner, and Bay K 8644 caused no significant effects on BNP secretion. The molecular forms of intracellular ANP were exclusively gamma-ANP, whereas those of BNP were gamma-BNP and its carboxy terminal 45-amino-acid peptide, BNP-45. The ratio of media to cell contents was much higher in BNP than in ANP. Northern blot analysis revealed that both ANP mRNA and BNP mRNA levels were significantly increased by 10(-7) M endothelin (ANP mRNA, +52%; BNP mRNA, +36%; p < 0.05 each) and 5 x 10(-5) M 1-oleoyl-2-acetylglycerol (ANP mRNA, +296%; BNP mRNA, +133%; p < 0.01 each) but not by 10(-6) M A23187. Thus, the secretion of ANP is stimulated by both the elevation of [Ca2+]i and the activation of protein kinase C, whereas its synthesis is increased mainly by the activation of protein kinase C. The synthesis and secretion of BNP are augmented by the activation of protein kinase C rather than the elevation of [Ca2+]i. Furthermore, the processing and secretion of ANP and BNP may be regulated in different manners.

Abstract
Neurologic findings in 3 siblings with Angelman syndrome (AS) with apparently normal karyotype but DNA deletion of 15q11-q12 deriving from their mother are described. Increased auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were noted in all 3. Interictal EEG findings included periodic 2- to 3-Hz high-voltage slow wave bursts bioccipitally and sporadic slow spike wave complexes mainly bifrontally. EEG findings suggestive of minor epileptic status were apparent in the elder brother and may be a characteristic feature in young AS patients. Seizures suggestive of generalized epilepsy have been reported in 90% of AS patients. AS is considered a good model of symptomatic generalized epilepsy associated with chromosomal DNA deletion of the (GABA)A receptor beta 3-subunit gene.

Abstract
Using anti-murine interleukin-2 receptor beta chain (IL-2R beta) monoclonal antibody (mAb), we have examined the expression of IL-2R beta on murine thymocyte subpopulations. We found that it was constitutively expressed on 1%-4% of thymocytes in an almost mutually exclusive fashion with IL-2R alpha. The expression of IL-2R beta is developmentally regulated. While it is expressed mainly on T cell receptor gamma delta+ (TcR gamma delta+) cells during fetal age, the major subpopulation expressing IL-2R beta in adult mouse shifts to CD4-CD8-TcR alpha beta+ thymocytes. A considerable portion of CD4-CD8- TcR alpha beta+ cells in other organs, including spleen, bone marrow and liver, was also found to express IL-2R beta. In fetal thymus organ culture, the above thymocyte subset was induced to expand in response to exogeneous IL-2, and the expansion was inhibited by addition of anti-IL-2R beta mAb, suggesting that IL-2R beta is functional in this subpopulation. However, in vivo blockade of the IL-2/IL-2R pathway with the mAb did not exert any effects on the appearance of CD4-CD8- TcR alpha beta+ cells both in the thymus and the periphery. This indicates that the development of CD4-CD8- TcR alpha beta+ cells is not solely controlled by IL-2 but also by other complex elements.
