Abstract
Expression of prothymosin alpha (PTA) has been related to cell proliferation, both normal and pathological. PTA has also been proposed to be a target of the c-myc protooncogene. To study PTA mRNA levels during pathological cell growth, and especially the effect of the activation of specific oncogenes on PTA expression, we have studied its expression in tumors that arise in transgenic mice. We found high PTA levels in mammary tumors arising in c-myc, c-neu, and v-ras transgenic mice. Levels of this protein were variable between different tumors, and there is a differential regulation of PTA respect to other putative c-myc target genes, such as Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC). Furthermore, expression of PTA is not absolutely dependent of c-myc expression, as shown by MYC depletion experiments performed with antisense oligonucleotides. We conclude that regulation of PTA in these tumors is complex and depends on more than a single activated oncogene.

Abstract
An SO2 gas sensor was developed by using a hydrogen sulfite-selective electrode positioned behind a gas-permeable membrane (GPM). The hydrogen sulfite-selective electrode was prepared by incorporating a multicyclic guanidinium ionophore in a plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane. This gas sensor presents important advantages over the conventional Severinghaus-type SO2 gas sensor that contains a pH electrode immersed in an internal solution behind the GPM. The Severinghaus gas sensor suffers interferences from weak acids that can cross the GPM as gases and change the pH of the internal solution. In contrast, in the proposed sensor, the excellent selectivity of the HSO3- electrode and the ability of the GPM to discriminate gaseous from nongaseous species combine to generate the most selective potentiometric SO2 gas sensor reported to date.

Abstract
Spontaneous mutagenesis in O6-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase-proficient and -deficient (ada ogt mutants) Escherichia coli was studied in two ways: in bacteria growing in nonselective liquid medium and in bacteria resting on selective agar plates. ATase mutants showed similar spontaneous mutation rates as ATase proficient bacteria during growth phase; an excess of mutants arising in nondividing cells. The resting-associated mutagenesis in ada + ogt + uvr- bacteria was biphasic; the high sensitive range being triggered beyond the first 6 days after plating. Contrarily, spontaneous Lacc mutants from ada- ogt- uvr- cells steadily increased over the 8 day period of plate incubation. These results suggested that, in the absence of nucleotide excision repair, the repair by both the Ada and the Ogt ATases is not saturated until the cells have been resting for 6 days. The spontaneous LacI-d mutation spectrum of ada + ogt + uvr- bacteria growing in non-selective liquid medium served as a baseline to determine the mutation events increased in the ATase-deficient derivative upon prolonged incubation on selective plates. The percentage of G:C-->A:T transitions, presumably driven by unrepaired O6-alkylguanine lesions, was increased at the expense of other mutation types. G:C-->A:T transitions accumulated with a pronounced 5'PuG bias, suggesting that the endogenous metabolite(s) responsible for this mutation class is an SN1 type alkylating compound(s). Accordingly, the site distribution of G:C-->A:T transitions in nondividing ATase defective bacteria showed similarities with the spectra induced by alkylnitrosoureas, particularly with those generating bulky alkylated DNA adducts.

Abstract
Photocatalytic processes in the presence of titanium dioxide provide an interesting route to destroy hazardous organic contaminants, being operational in the UV-A domain with a potential use of solar radiation. In this paper, some specific contaminant classes of interest such as ethylbenzene, gamma-lindane and EPTC have been tested at laboratory scale and in the field to determine the feasibility of the photocatalytic oxidation of organic contaminants in water. Our preliminary results at laboratory scale with these chemicals have provided a better understanding of the photocatalytic process which seems to be efficient and not selective. The application of these processes in removal of gamma-lindane from water operating in a parabolic trough concentrator has demonstrated to be effective, being possible to reduce 99.9% of gamma-lindane levels in water in acceptable times.

Abstract
Prothymosin alpha (ProTalpha) is an acidic nuclear protein the expression of which is related to the proliferation and differentiation processes in mammalian cells. In the present study we have stably transfected HL-60 cells, a biological system that allows the study of both proliferation and differentiation, with recombinant vectors encoding sense and antisense ProTalpha mRNA. In the HL-60 cell clones overexpressing ProTalpha we observed an acceleration in the growth rate, whereas expression of the antisense orientation showed the opposite effect. Moreover, cell-cycle analysis demonstrated that the G1-phase was shortened in the cells expressing the sense construct. Before studying how ProTalpha affects differentiation, we showed that the down-regulation of ProTalpha gene during differentiation occurs in all mammalian cell lines (HL-60, K562, U937, MEL C88, N2A and PC12) analysed. The biological effect evoked by the induction of the ProTalpha sense vector was the retardation of cell differentiation, although expression of the antisense construct showed no effect on differentiation. In conclusion, our findings provide evidence that ProTalpha is directly implicated in cellular proliferation and that the maintenance of high levels of ProTalpha inside HL-60 cells is incompatible with their ability to differentiate.

Abstract
Prothymosin alpha (PTA) stimulates in a dose-dependent manner the phosphorylation of a 105-kDa protein (p105) in cell extracts from different cell types. Protein sequencing and immunological analysis indicated that this protein is elongation factor 2 (EF-2). We propose that calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase III is responsible for the PTA-dependent EF-2 phosphorylation based on the following lines of evidence: (a) Ca2+ is required for the effect; (b) calmodulin enhances the reaction, and calmodulin inhibitors block the phosphorylation; and (c) no phosphorylation is seen in cell extracts depleted of calmodulin-binding proteins. To obtain a strong phosphorylated EF-2 band, we found it necessary to add PTA to cytosolic extracts from synchronized dividing cells in various phases of the cell cycle except in mitosis. Since PTA is a nuclear protein everywhere in the cell cycle except in mitosis, when it is found in the cytoplasm, we hypothesize that, if PTA activates EF-2 phosphorylation in vivo, as present data suggest, its presence in the cytoplasm during mitosis could explain why EF-2 phosphorylation is mainly restricted to that phase of the cell cycle. Moreover, other bands in addition to EF-2 were phosphorylated in a calmodulin- and PTA-dependent manner, and several of them (in a range between 50 and 60 kDa) have similar Mr to those that conform to the holoenzyme calcium/calmodulin dependent protein kinase II, suggesting that PTA could have a more general function modulating the activity of various Ca2+/CaM-dependent enzymes along the cell cycle.

Abstract
Little is known about the TGF-beta1 mechanism that promotes thyroid cell growth arrest. We assessed TGF-beta1 effects on Fisher rat thyroid cell line (FRTL-5). This allowed us to study TGF-beta1 action on thyroid cells in various physiological situations such as actively proliferating cells, resting cells stimulated to proliferate by the action of various mitogens, and resting cells. TGF-beta1 arrested proliferating FRTL-5 cells, increasing c-myc mRNA levels and reducing p27-free cyclin D1 protein levels, without affecting either the cellular content of p27 or the cyclin D1-p27 complexes. Moreover, TGF-beta1 treatment reduced the activity of cyclin E-CDK2 complexes and, consequently, pRB was found to be hypophosphorylated. TGF-beta1 prevented resting cells to enter in the cell cycle when stimulated with growing medium (newborn calf serum plus a mixture of five hormones) but not when TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) plus IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor I) were used as mitogens. Both stimuli increased the levels of cyclins D1, D3 and E but TGF-beta1 had a greater effect in decreasing these cyclin levels in growing-medium stimulated cells than in TSH + IGF-1. This suggests that for FRTL-5 cells, the content of these cyclins must exceed a threshold to progress through the cell cycle. TGF-beta1 induced apoptosis in quiescent cells, accompanied by a reduction in p27 protein levels and an increase in c-myc expression. Interestingly, TGF-beta1-induced variations in prothymosin alpha and c-myc mRNA levels were not correlated. TGF-beta1 always promoted an increase of p15 mRNA levels. In summary, our results point to the fact that TGF-beta1 could play a physiological role in the control of thyroid growth through the modification of cell cycle regulatory proteins.

Abstract
The interaction between metallic iron pigments (MPs) and the actual constituents of magnetic ink is examined by first determining the adsorption isotherms and analyzing by FTIR the type of bonding that is established between the constituents and MP. Then, following the approach described in a previous paper using model compounds, the formation of electrical charges on MPs is examined through acoustophorometric (Electrokinetic amplitude or ESA) measurements. It is shown that the variation in ESA is related to charge transfer processes and reflects the MP-constituent interactions. Finally, adsorption competitions are shown and the importance of the method of preparation (order of mixing of the ingredients of the ink) is illustrated. Copyright 1997 Academic Press. Abstract
Recent reports have shown that patients with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) improve transiently after high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) administration. Information about the usefulness of IVIG for long-term treatment is rather scanty. Our findings demonstrate the efficacy of monthly IVIG courses at a dose of 0.4 g/kg/day for 5 days, in a 41-year-old patient with LEMS without detectable malignancy. Improvement in limb strength, peak expiratory flow rate, and electrophysiological parameters, as well as clinical signs following IVIG, was evident as early as 7 days after the first course and is still maintained at 24-months follow-up.

Abstract
To study angiogenesis in early steps of melanoma progression, 113 cutaneous melanomas 1 mm or less in thickness were stained with Ulex europaeus lectin. Vascular density was determined in the areas of greatest vascularization. To avoid the effect of anatomic location, the quotient between vascular density at the tumor base and in normal skin (vascular ratio) was obtained in each case. Of these melanomas, 46 were immunohistochemically stained for the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Positivity was scored from 1-4 by comparing staining of melanoma cells with keratinocytes. Vascular ratio values in vertical growth phase melanomas were higher than those in radial growth phase when counting per 200 or 400 magnification (2.29 +/- 1.3 and 2.48 +/- 1.5 for vertical growth phase and 1.34 +/- 0.62 and 1.41 +/- 0.83 for radial growth phase melanomas, respectively). This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.001 at x200 and x400, respectively). Also, VEGF staining was stronger in vertical growth phase melanomas when compared with radial growth phase melanomas (Chi square, p < 0.025). In conclusion, our findings suggest that angiogenesis and VEGF expression are associated with the development of vertical growth phase.

Abstract
The adsorption of stearic acid and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, from toluene and THF solutions, on magnetic iron pigments (MP) was examined. Adsorption isotherms as well as the concomitant variations of surface electrical (zeta) potential were determined. The formation of electrical surface charges is explained by charge transfer processes between the solvents, the adsorbates, and MP. An adsorption competition is evidenced when contacting MP with the adsorbates using 14C-labeled stearic acid.

Abstract
Electric organs of Psammobatis extenta (Rajiformes) electric fish derive from myoblasts of the caudal region (16). Here we study the presence of muscle proteins, actin and the actin-binding proteins, alpha-actinin and tropomyosin, in the electrocytes by means of biochemical approaches, scanning electron microscopy and immunocytochemical methods. NBD-phallacidin is employed to detect the filamentous form of actin (F-actin). Immunoblots of actin and alpha-actinin from P. extenta skeletal and smooth muscle show that the electric organ forms of actin and alpha-actinin correspond to muscle types. Scanning electron microscopy shows that P. extenta electrocytes are highly polarized cells, semicircular in shape, with an anterior, concave innervated face and a posterior, convex, non-innervated face. The immunofluorescence patterns of alpha-actinin and tropomyosin distribution are similar to those of actin, in that these epitopes appear to occur throughout the entire electrocyte cytoplasm. F-actin, as revealed by NBD-phallacidin fluorescence, was also found throughout the cytoplasm. This is the first time that evidence is presented to demonstrate the existence of muscle actin in this weak electric fish species electrocyte. The close evolutionary connection to that of muscle cells is discussed.

Abstract
We reported that tumor content of prothymosin alpha (ProT alpha) is a proliferation index of human breast tumors that might be used to identify patients at high risk for distant metastasis (Dominguez et al., Eur J Cancer 1993; 29A:893-7). In that study ProT alpha concentrations were measured by a RIA; here we present an alternative nonisotopic assay that could be used in a standard clinical laboratory. Main features of the ELISA are: (a) A recombinant fusion protein glutathione S-transferase (GST)-human ProT alpha was used to coat the microtiter plates; (b) we used a polyclonal antiserum raised in rabbits that detects thymosin alpha1, the NH2-terminal fragment of ProT alpha; (c) it is as sensitive as the RIA; (d) it is faster than the RIA. ProT alpha concentrations in various human tumors (skin, esophagus, colorectal, and breast) as assessed by ELISA were comparable with, although twofold greater than, the values previously estimated by RIA.

Abstract
To determine the influence of DNA repair by Ogt alkyltransferase on the distribution of alkylnitrosourea-induced mutations, we have analysed in Ogt-proficient and Ogt-deficient bacterial strains the DNA sequence changes of a total of 357 independent mutations occurring within the initial part of the lacl gene of Escherichia coli. The majority (>80%) of mutations induced by either N-ethyl-N nitrosourea (ENU) or N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) in the two genetic backgrounds were G:C --> A:T transitions, consistent with the predominant role of the O6-alkylguanine miscoding lesion in mutagenesis by alkylating agents. The analysis of the distribution of G:C --> A:T transitions induced by ENU in Ogt+ and Ogt bacteria reveals an influence of the 5'-flanking base at the level of repair by Ogt alkyltransferase. The Ogt protein appears more efficient at repairing O6-ethylguanine lesions, which are flanked 5' by a G or C, in agreement with previously reported data from our group for ethylmethane sulfonate. In contrast, no preference could be inferred for the repair of O6-methylguanine lesions by Ogt protein. These results seem to indicate that the preference of the Ogt alkyltransferase to repair certain DNA sequences might be a function of the size of the alkyl group. The importance of the alkyl group length has been described also at the level of the (A)BC excinuclease machinery that seems to have a DNA sequence specificity opposite to that of Ogt alkyltransferose.

Abstract
The possibility that human leukemic cells could synthesize growth hormone (GH) was investigated in the HL-60 cell line. Western blot analysis of protein extracts obtained from these cells revealed the existence of a major immunoreactive GH (irGH) band, with an approximate molecular weight of 22 kDa, together with lower amounts of 20- and 44-kDa bands. Stimulating proliferating HL-60 cells with KCl clearly increased GH concentration in the incubation medium as compared to basal values. RT-PCR amplification of HL-60 RNA and restriction assay of the amplimers demonstrated that those proteins were the result of the expression of the GH-N (normal) gene in this cell line. These results were confirmed by Northern blot, which also showed that the rate of GH-N gene expression was clearly dependent upon the proliferative state of the cells: while GH transcripts were easily detectable in actively proliferating cells, only minute amounts were observed when cells were induced to differentiate with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). Similar differences were observed by Western blot. In all, these findings demonstrate that HL-60 cells are capable to produce and secrete a GH identical to pituitary GH. Interestingly, the rate of synthesis of the hormone dramatically increases when cells are actively proliferating. Therefore, it is likely that locally produced GH might be involved in the control of leukemic cell proliferation. Further studies are now in course to establish whether this mechanism occurs via an autocrine and/or paracrine way.

Abstract
Mitral valve prolapse is the most frequent cardiac valvulopathy. Given its greater incidence in young women it is a factor which must be taken into account when performing cesarean section. Two patients with mitral valve prolapse in whom a cesarean section was carried out are presented: case 1, a 22-year-old woman, ASA II, 72 kg, with mitral valve prolapse associated with the Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome and an episode of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. The cesarean section which was indicated because of the absence of fetal progression was performed under epidural anesthesia. Forty-five minutes after regional blockade a hypotensive episode was observed which remitted following the i.v. administration of 6 mg of methoxamine. No other complication was reported. The Apgar score of the neonate at one minute was 7; case 2, a 31 year-old woman, ASA II, 51 kg, diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse with no associated symptomatology. A cesarean section was performed in this patient because of pedal presentation under general anesthesia without complications. The Apgar score of the neonate at one minute was 8. The physiopathology of mitral valve prolapse as well as anesthesia management during cesarean section in this type of valvulopathy is reviewed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The frequency of Streptococcus pyogenes infections with deep tissue invasion and toxic shock syndrome has increased in the last decade throughout the world. AIM To compare antimicrobial susceptibility of S. pyogenes strains isolated during 1986 and during 1994-95. MATERIAL AND METHOD Eighty two S. pyogenes strains isolated in 1986 and 67 strains isolated in 1994-95, were studied. MIC 50 and 90 were determined by and agar dilution method for penicillin, ampicillin, cefazolin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, roxithromycin and miocamycin. RESULTS Eighty eight strains came from skin of soft tissues, 19 from surgical wounds, 18 from invasive infections, 15 from pharyngeal swabs and 9 from other locations. All strains were susceptible to penicillin, ampicillin, cefazolin, cefuroxime, roxithromycin and miocamycin. Ninety nine percent of strains were susceptible to erythromycin. Strains isolated in 1995-95 had a higher MIC 50 and 90 for erythromycin than those isolated in 1986. CONCLUSIONS The changes in susceptibility to erythromycin of recently isolated strains could be due to the widespread use of macrolides in Chile.

Abstract
Abstract
The surface of precipitated silica was modified by heat treatment (800°C, 4 h) and hexadecanol treatment. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic (DRIFTS) measurements reveal that the modification of the silica surface reduces the silanol content. Heat treatment causes condensation of the silanol groups forming siloxane linkages, while hexadecanol treatment causes esterification, thereby, shielding the free silanol groups. As a result, the modified silicas exhibit much less interaction with polar molecules (e.g. water, chloroform), compared to the unreacted silica. Bound rubber formation in the chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM)/silica system is also adversely affected by the modification of the filler surface. CSM upon heat treatment (180°C, 1 h) loses -SO2Cl groups and the modified polymer lacks in its ability to form bound rubber. Accordingly, it is believed that the rubber-filler interaction occurs between the silanol groups of the silica and sulfonyl chloride groups of CSM.

Abstract
HSP-70 was induced in the gerbil following 20 min of forebrain ischemia. The induction, as revealed with immunohistochemistry, is stronger and longer-lasting in CA3 and dentate gyrus than in CA1. Most neurons in this region, except GABAergic interneurons containing the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin, eventually cease to live as a result of delayed cell death. Double-labeling of inducible HSP-70 and parvalbumin has shown that no co-localization occurs in the hippocampus and neocortex of the gerbil in this model of transient forebrain ischemia. These results show that different thresholds of sensitivity and vulnerability exist for different subpopulations of neurons in the ischemic hippocampus, and suggest that HSP-70 protein induction is probably not essential for the survival of particular neuronal subpopulations subjected to transient ischemia.

Abstract
The presence of bacteriophages at different stages in three drinking water treatment plants was evaluated to study the usefulness of phages as model organisms for assessing the efficiency of the processes. The bacteriophages tested were somatic coliphages, F-specific coliphages, and phages infecting Bacteroides fragilis. The presence of enteroviruses and currently used bacterial indicators was also determined. Most bacteriophages were removed during the prechlorination-flocculation-sedimentation step. In these particular treatment plants, which include prechlorination, phages were, in general, more resistant to the treatment processes than present bacterial indicators, with the exception, in some cases, of clostridia. Bacteriophages infecting B. fragilis were found to be more resistant to water treatment than either somatic or F-specific coliphages or even clostridia. Enteric viruses were found only in untreated water in low numbers, and consequently, the efficiency of the plants in the removal of viruses could not be evaluated with precision. The numbers and frequencies of detection of the various microorganisms in water samples taken in the distribution network served by the three plants confirm the results found in the finished water at the plants.

Abstract
Forward mutations induced by ethylmethane sulfonate (EMS) in the lacI gene of Escherichia coli were recovered from bacteria proficient or deficient in the alkyltransferase encoded by the constitutive ogt gene. EMS doses of 100 or 200 mM (Ogt+) and of 50 mM (Ogt-) were selected from the corresponding dose-response curves for DNA sequence analysis. A total of 239 induced mutations affecting the N-terminal region of the lacI gene were characterized. All mutations were G:C-->A:T transitions, consistent with the predominant role of the O6-ethylguanine miscoding lesion in mutagenesis by EMS. In the Ogt+ spectrum at the lowest tested dose of 100 mM EMS, guanines preceded by an A or T base at the 5' side were on average 3.2 times more likely to mutate than those preceded by a G or C base. This bias diminished at the higher EMS dose (200 mM) and disappeared in the Ogt- genetic background. Previously reported data for Ogt+ bacteria in a Uvr-proficient background show an opposite bias in favor of mutations at guanines preceded by a G or C base. The overall 5' flanking base influence was estimated as 8-fold. These data suggest that DNA repair by Ogt alkyltransferase plays an important role in the processing of ethylation-induced lesions responsible for GC-->AT transitions, influencing their ultimate distribution with respect to sequence context. The data further suggest that Ogt and UvrABC excision repair, the two major mechanisms of protection against the biological consequences of long-chain alkylating agents, show different DNA sequence specificity and that the relative importance of these two systems is highly dependent upon the chemical dose.

Abstract
The levels of thymosin beta 4 mRNA were studied throughout the cell cycle of NIH 3T3 cells. In serum deprived, quiescent cells, the levels of thymosin beta 4 were undetectable; after serum restoration, the cells were induced to proliferate and we found a pronounced increase in thymosin beta 4 mRNA levels at the G1/S transition. Thymosin beta 4 mRNA was induced even in the presence of cycloheximide. On the other hand, cycling cells that were synchronized at different stages of the cycle by means of mitotic shake-off after nocodazole arrest or a double thymidine block did not show any variation in the levels of thymosin beta 4 mRNA when they progressed synchronously through the cycle. In conclusion, the present data indicate that the thymosin beta 4 gene is regulated by cell proliferation but it is not a cell cycle-regulated gene. Finally, we studied thymosin beta 4 mRNA stability by inhibiting thymosin beta 4 gene transcription with actinomycin D. Our results suggest that thymosin beta 4 mRNA has a pronounced stability, a fact that might be relevant to account for the presence of thymosin beta 4 in enucleated cells like platelets.

Abstract
Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion was produced in adult gerbils aged 3-6 months following bilateral stenosis of the carotid artery lasting 8 weeks. Animals with no evidence of cerebral infarction were used in the present study. Ubiquitin-immunoreactive free granules in the subcortical cerebral white matter and corpus callosum were observed in five of 12 animals. No similar lesions were found in sham-operated animals, age-matched controls, and gerbils subjected to transient forebrain ischaemia for 20 min and killed at different intervals. These results indicate that diffuse damage of the subcortical white matter may be encountered as the only neuropathological change following chronic hypoperfusion.

Abstract
Abstract
Rubber reinforcement of silicas with different surface alkylation have been evaluated by studies of NH3-modified swelling, swelling volume fraction, stress-strain tests, and scanning electron microscopy. Effects of silica alkylation on filler dispersion has been explained on the basis of surface energy and acid-base interactions. Bound rubber reductions have been explained according to acid-base interactions and/or physical entanglements. Hysteresis losses have been interpreted based on the reductions of polymer-filler and filler-filler interactions. The results show that the extent of reinforcement in NR and SBR vulcanizates is reduced when the silicas are alkylated, especially in the case of the hexadecyl group. However, in NBR vulcanizates the alkylation seems to have less influence on the reinforcement characteristics of the silica.

Abstract
There is conflicting clinical evidence suggesting a positive role for gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) on implantation in humans. This potential effect was evaluated in this study taking the oocyte donation programme as a model. Patients were randomly allocated into one of the two treatment groups: group I received simultaneous treatment with GnRHa and steroids, and group II only received exogenous steroid replacement. An analysis of the donors and semen quality showed similarity between recipient groups. There was no significant difference between groups in the number and quality of embryos replaced, clinical pregnancy and implantation rates. In summary, using a model in which the endometrium can be analysed independently of the embryos, the results suggest that GnRHa are neither effective nor detrimental for embryo implantation in humans.

Abstract
A retrospective analysis of our in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and oocyte donation programmes was carried out in order to gain clinical knowledge of the factors involved in the aetiology of the endometriosis-associated infertility. Comparison between the IVF outcomes from 96 cycles in 78 patients with tubal infertility and from 96 cycles in 59 women with endometriosis indicates that endometriosis patients have a poor IVF outcome in terms of reduced pregnancy rate per cycle (P < 0.0004), reduced pregnancy rate per transfer (P < 0.002), and reduced implantation rate (P < 0.003). The analysis of patients undergoing oocyte donation for different reasons, including low response with or without endometriosis, showed that patients with this disease have the same chances of implantation and pregnancy as other recipients when the oocytes came from donors without known endometriosis. However, when the results of oocyte donation were classified according to the origin of the oocytes donated, patients who received embryos derived from endometriotic ovaries showed a significantly (P < 0.05) reduced implantation rate as compared to the remaining groups. Taken together, all these observations suggest that infertility in endometriosis patients may be related to alterations within the oocyte, which in turn result in embryos with decreased ability to implant.

Abstract
Electric tissue syntrophin, originally described as an M(r) 58,000 postsynaptic protein having homologs in mammalian muscle, was previously shown to associate with dystrophin in Triton extracts of Torpedo postsynaptic membranes. It also associates with the Torpedo M(r) 87,000 postsynaptic protein (87K), the core of which is a superdomain homologous to the cysteine-rich (CR) and COOH-terminal (CT) domains of human dystrophin. Using immunoaffinity purifications from various rat tissues and immunoblotting, we find that syntrophin associates with dystrophin, utrophin (the chromosome 6-encoded dystrophin homolog formerly known as dystrophin-related protein), multiple proteins which are cross-reactive with 87K, and two subfamilies of 71K-like proteins (CRCT-containing proteins encoded by the dystrophin gene under the control of an alternative promoter in intron 62). One 71K subfamily retains the dystrophin COOH-terminal sequence; the other has an alternative COOH-terminal sequence caused by deletion of the penultimate exon by alternative splicing. The relative masses of the members of the subfamilies suggest they arise by alternative splicing at other previously described sites within CT. These results establish that syntrophin is a general ligand for the CRCT domain in mammalian dystrophin and its homologs. They also reveal a greater diversity in 71K proteins than has previously been apparent.

Abstract
Anti-Hu autoantibodies in high titres, as revealed with immunocytochemistry and Western blot, were present in a patient with gastrointestinal pseudo-obstruction and small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) bearing the Hu antigen. Marked neuron and nerve fibre loss were found in the myenteric plexus at postmortem. These findings show that neuronopathic Hu-associated gastrointestinal pseudo-obstruction can occur as the only paraneoplastic neurological symptom in patients with SCLC.

Abstract
Parvalbumin-immunoreactive dystrophic neurites and aberrant terminal sprouts associated with senile plaques, together with preserved density of parvalbumin-immunoreactive neurons, were found in the cerebral cortex of two patients with Alzheimer's disease, one of them familiar, in which a biopsy of the left frontal lobe was carried out for diagnostic and counselling purposes. These findings suggest that, although parvalbumin-immunoreactive cells are relatively resistant to degeneration in Alzheimer's disease, parvalbumin-immunoreactive neuronal processes can degenerate in some cases of Alzheimer's disease.

The susceptibility of 45 strains of Neisseria gonorrhoea was studied measuring minimal inhibitory concentrations of five antimicrobials. Results show that 66.7% of strains are resistant to tetracycline and 11.2% to penicillin. All strains were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. This results should prompt to perform surveillance in different areas of Santiago and to establish new therapeutic norms for the treatment of gonococcal infections.

Abstract
Degeneration of the central white matter is described in old dogs. The presence of ubiquitin-immunoreactive free granules and intracytoplasmic globules in glial cells and macrophages, together with galacerebroside-immunoreactive precipitates and lipofusion storage, point to the likelihood of a primary myelin degeneration with deposits of non-degraded ubiquitin-protein conjugates and complex galactolipids.

Abstract
The magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake of 28 June 1992 triggered a remarkably sudden and widespread increase in earthquake activity across much of the western United States. The triggered earthquakes, which occurred at distances up to 1250 kilometers (17 source dimensions) from the Landers mainshock, were confined to areas of persistent seismicity and strike-slip to normal faulting. Many of the triggered areas also are sites of geothermal and recent volcanic activity. Static stress changes calculated for elastic models of the earthquake appear to be too small to have caused the triggering. The most promising explanations involve nonlinear interactions between large dynamic strains accompanying seismic waves from the mainshock and crustal fluids (perhaps including crustal magma).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze endometrial response (endometrial dating and implantation) to exogenous administration of E2-valerate and P in women with low response to gonadotropins undergoing oocyte donation. DESIGN Prospective study. A cycle in which endometrial specimens were obtained and subsequent cycles with ET were evaluated. The control group was made up of patients with premature ovarian failure (POF) undergoing the same procedure. SETTING, PATIENTS In Vitro Fertilization program at the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad. A total of 37 women with low response to gonadotropins in previous cycles and 33 women with POF. INTERVENTIONS First artificial cycle with E2-valerate and P in the absence of previous pituitary suppression to determine endometrial adequacy. Successive artificial cycles in which ET was performed on cycle day 17. Oocytes donated from infertile patients undergoing IVF. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Serum steroid levels were measured during the artificial cycle. Histologic dating of the endometrium on cycle days 15 and 26. Ultrasonographically documented IVF-ET pregnancies. RESULTS Postovulatory changes on cycle day 15 were observed in 36.4% of low responders treated with E2-valerate and P in the absence of simultaneous pituitary suppression. Pregnancy rates were higher in women with previous sufficiently (77.8%) or insufficiently (80%) estrogen-primed endometrium than in the cases showing postovulatory changes (37.5%). Pregnancy rates (PRs) per transfer were significantly higher in low responders (63.8%) than in patients with POF (37.2%). Patients with endometriosis had a 71.4% PR per transfer. Embryos derived from oocytes from polycystic ovaries had a 48.3% PR. CONCLUSIONS Oocyte donation is a reliable alternative for women with low response to gonadotropins, including those with severe endometriosis. The efficacy of the steroid replacement regimen in controlling ovarian function may influence outcome. Thus, women with functional ovaries despite exogenous steroid replacement might be differently treated. Women with polycystic ovaries are an adequate source of oocyte donation.

Abstract
1. This paper describes the effects of several cholinergic agonists and antagonists, and of beta-phenylethylamine (PEA) and some of its derivatives, on the articular capsule, or ligament, of the primary spines of Eucidaris tribuloides. 2. Carbamylcholine (CCh), methacholine (MeACh), nicotine, and muscarine exert a stiffening effect similar to that of acetylcholine (ACh), although the time course of their actions varies widely. 3. Atropine induced stiffening and blocked and responses to muscarine and MeACh. The responses to MeACh were blocked also by 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine, suggesting the presence in the ligament of type M3 muscarinic receptors, in addition to nicotinic ones. d-Tubocurarine induced stiffness of the ligament and failed to block the responses to ACh and nicotine. 4. While ACh induced only a slight desensitization, CCh caused a long-lasting blockade of the stiffening effects of the cholinergic agonists. This shows that the receptors for ACh have a site or sites that recognize the ester moieties of these molecules. 5. Eserine and neostigmine potentiate the responses to acetylcholine, indicating the presence of acetylcholinesterase in the ligament. 6. beta-Phenylethylamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine induce diphasic responses; usually a brief softening followed by a slow and irreversible stiffening of the ligament. 7. In contrast to the above, tyramine and octopamine elicit a simple softening of ligaments which are stiff as a result of handling or by exposure to cholinergic agonists. However, tyramine and octopamine do not soften ligaments which become stiff as a result of exposure to adrenergic agonists.

Abstract
Abstract
A blend of chlorosulfonated polyethylene and epoxidized natural rubber undergoes a self-crosslinking reaction at elevated temperatures. Sulfonyl chloride groups of chlorosulfonated polyethylene react with epoxy groups of epoxidized natural rubber to give ether crosslinks between the two polymers. In addition to the self-crosslinking reaction, these two polymers undergo a number of side reactions as evidenced by spectroscopic studies.

Abstract
Physical interaction between Langerhans cells and T cells is an essential requirement for antigen presentation. In this study we report the ultrastructural characteristics of the antigen-specific physical interactions that occur in vitro between murine Langerhans cells and T cells. Epidermal Langerhans cells enriched to 78% purity by a panning method were pulsed with 2,4-dinitrophenyl-Limulus polyphemus hemocyanin and co-incubated with syngeneic T lymphocytes primed in vivo with the same antigen. A substantial number of conjugates constituted by Langerhans cells surrounded by three or more lymphocytes were obtained after 60 min of incubation at 4 degrees C. Electron microscopy of the conjugates revealed that Langerhans cells and T lymphocytes interacted by two type of contacts. Type I was characterized by glycocalyx-glycocalyx interaction that occurred in relation to protrusions or microvilli of both cells. Type II was characterized by wide and tight areas of close apposition between Langerhans cells and T-lymphocyte plasma membranes. In these areas there were zones with intercellular bridges and small septilaminar junctions highly suggestive of gap junctions. An electron-immunogold procedure demonstrated the presence of DNP-LPH antigen on the type I contact. Our findings suggest that type I contact may represent the locus for antigen presentation whereas the type II contact may be involved in keeping adhesiveness between Langerhans cells and lymphocytes during antigen presentation.

Abstract
It has been previously reported that 1) plasma erythropoietin (Epo) titer during exposure to hypobaria is lower in nephrectomized rats and mice whose submaxillary glands (SMG) were either ablated or atrophied than in nephrectomized controls whose SMG were intact and 2) that the gland shows one of the highest levels of immunoreactive Epo (iEpo) in the body. The latter observation, however, was questioned recently when it was observed that SMG extracts degrade labeled Epo used as tracer antigen in the radioimmunoassay (RIA), thus giving invalid estimates of Epo. Since this interpretation was in turn questioned, the present study was conducted to obtain more information on the subject and make these conflicting points clear. Investigation of the reported/possible degradation of Epo by SMG homogenates was conducted via polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by radioautography or by a RIA in solid phase in which there was no simultaneous incubation of the tracer antigen with the SMG homogenates. It was observed that 125I-labeled rhEpo was degraded when incubated with SMG homogenates. Degradation was rapid, being evident when incubation lasted 30 minutes, and occurred in the presence of a protease inhibitor. It showed a high degree of specificity since it did not occur when Epo was incubated with kidney homogenate or normal mouse serum. SMG homogenate did not degrade labeled thyrotrophic hormone and degraded alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) only partially. When estimates of iEpo in SMG homogenate were performed in conditions of simultaneous (SI-RIA) or nonsimultaneous (NSI-RIA) incubation of the homogenate with tracer Epo, it was observed that while estimates of Epo in plasma were similar in both types of RIA and somewhat higher in kidney homogenate in the SI-RIA than in the NSI-RIA, estimates of Epo in SMG were about 60 times higher in the former than in the latter. Therefore, it could be concluded that most of the Epo detected by standard RIA in SMG homogenate does not represent true Epo because of damage of tracer Epo which determines loss of the integrity of the RIA system.
