Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), viscosity, and volume on esophageal motility using high-resolution manometry (HRM). Manometric studies were performed on 60 asymptomatic volunteers (27 men and 33 women, age: 19-56 years) while in a supine position. Manometric protocol included 10 water swallows (5 cc), 10 jelly swallows (5 cc), and 1 water swallow (20 cc). Evaluation of HRM parameters including length of proximal pressure trough (PPT length), distal latency (DL), contractile front velocity (CFV), distal contractile integral (DCI), and 4-second integrated relaxation pressure (IRP) was performed using MATLAB. Significant differences were noted in median IRP between water 5 cc (median 7.2 mmHg [range 5.5-9.6]), jelly 5 cc (median 6.0 mmHg [range 3.8-8.0]), and water 20 cc {(Median 4.8 mmHg [range 3.3-7.4]), P < 0.01}. DL were significantly different between water 5 cc, jelly 5 cc, and water 20 cc (P < 0.01), and in terms of PPT, proportions of small (2 cm ≤ < 5 cm) and large (5 cm≤) break for jelly 5 cc were significantly higher than those for the water 5 cc swallow (P < 0.05). Furthermore, DCI increased with age for water 5 cc, and a significant negative correlation was noticed between proportions of small break and BMI for water 5 cc. Manometric measurements vary depending on age, BMI, viscosity, and volume. These findings need to be taken into account in the interpretation of manometry results.

Abstract
Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. is a deciduous woody vine native to northern China and the Russian Far East. Its berries have long been used in traditional Asian medicine. In Korea, S. chinensis is one of 10 major medicinal crops and, as of 2011, the production is 6,892 metric tons from 1,749 ha of cultivation area (1). During summer to autumn of 2011 and 2012, leaf spots were observed on S. chinensis (cv. Cheongsun) with disease incidence of 100% in many locations of Jangsu County, Korea. Early symptoms appeared as small, circular, and pale brown spots. Each spot increased in size, became grayish brown and necrotic, and finally developed concentric rings with a definite margin. Some spots coalesced to cover nearly half of the leaves, often becoming torn and giving a shot hole effect. The infected leaf tissue contained blackish pycnidia from which masses of conidia were released in a humid environment. The pycnidia were brown, globose to pyriform, ostiolate, and 45 to 160 μm in diameter. Conidia were hyaline, smooth, oval to ellipsoidal, aseptate or medianly 1-septate, very occasionally 2-septate, slightly constricted at the septa, 4 to 11 × 2.5 to 5 μm, and contained small oil drops. These morphological characteristics were consistent with the generic concept of Phoma (2). Three monoconidial isolates were successfully cultured by diluting conidia mass in sterile water and streaking conidia suspension on potato dextrose agar (PDA). A representative isolate was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC47113) and used for pathogenicity test and molecular analysis. Inoculum for a pathogenicity test was prepared by harvesting conidia from 30-day-old cultures (12-h diurnal cycle, 25°C) and a conidial suspension in water (1.1 × 107 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto leaves of three healthy seedlings (cv. Cheongsun). Three seedlings serving as controls were sprayed until runoff with sterile distilled water. The plants were separately covered with plastic bags for 48 h in a glasshouse. After 10 days, typical leaf spot symptoms developed on the leaves inoculated with the fungus. Phoma sp. was re-isolated from those lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on controls. The pathogenicity test was conducted twice. Fungal DNA was extracted, and the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced directly. The resulting 520-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC928322). The sequence showed over 99% similarity with many Phoma species from various substrates, but no exact matches. Phoma leaf spot of S. chinensis was once recorded in Korea without pathogenicity test and culture deposition (3). Phoma glomerata was recorded as a causal fungus of leaf spot disease on S. chinensis in China (4). The Korean isolates differ from P. glomerata in having larger conidia and are separated from it in ITS sequence data. Therefore, we tentatively place the Korean isolates as unidentified Phoma sp. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of leaf spot disease caused by a Phoma sp. in Korea. References: (1) Anonymous. Abstract
BACKGROUND Isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is rare. Fungus ball (FB) is the third most common ISSD. We analysed the characteristics of isolated sphenoid FB based on demographic data, presenting symptoms, preoperative computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and treatment outcomes. METHODOLOGY From 1999 to 2012, 29 patients were identified with isolated sphenoid FB. Demographic data; clinical characteristics; endoscopic, CT, and MRI findings and treatment outcomes were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS The most common symptom was headaches, which were localized in various regions of the brain. Other symptoms were uncommon. The most common CT findings were sclerosis, calcification, enlarged sinus and total opacification. On T2-weighted MRI images, we most commonly observed signal void. Endoscopic transnasal paraseptal sphenoidotomy was performed in all patients, and for most, this was performed under local anaesthesia. No recurrence was observed in any patient. CONCLUSION Isolated sphenoid FB is predominantly observed in older women, and it is characterised by headaches and sclerosis of the sinus wall observed on CT scans. In cases of isolated sphenoid FB, endoscopic transnasal paraseptal sphenoidotomy can be successfully performed under local anaesthesia, which may facilitate rapid recovery and a low morbidity rate.

Abstract
CD24 negativity together with a positive expression of CD44 is considered as a marker for breast tumor initiating cells (breast cancer stem cells). We have previously reported that estrogen dynamically down regulate CD24 expression through an estrogen response element (ERE) present in the CD24 distal promoter. Further analysis of clinical breast cancer tissues suggested a frequent loss of CD24 expression in invasive breast cancers compared to the adjacent carcinoma in situ. Also, treatment with 5-AzaC could reverse the CD24 expression in many CD24 negative breast cancer cell lines. In order to understand the epigenetic regulation of CD24 expression and its correlation to hormonal status, the proximal promoter hypermethylation of CD24 gene was analyzed by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) in DNA from clinical samples and established cell lines from breast cancer patients. DNA from blood, non-cancerous, and cancerous tissues from 73 breast cancer patients were used. There were approximately equal number of estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) positive and negative patients. DNA was also obtained from CD44+/CD24- and CD44+/CD24+ subpopulation FACS sorted from MCF7, SUM159 and MDA-MB231 breast cancer cell lines. CD24 proximal promoter region was PCR amplified from bisulfite converted DNA and prevalence of individual CpG methylation was quantified by NGS. The methylation pattern of individual CpGs suggested that CpGs close to the CD24 transcription start site was more methylated compared to the distant CpGs. Promoter methylation was significantly higher in breast cancer tissues compared to blood DNA. Analysis of clinical parameters showed a significantly higher methylation in ERα positive tumors compared to the negative tumors suggesting a hormonal regulation in CD24 epigenetic silencing. Analysis of ONCOMINE data confirmed this lower CD24 expression in ERα positive tumors. Importantly, analysis of sorted subpopulation from established breast cancer cell lines suggested that the CD24 epigenetic silencing is the major regulatory mechanism in maintaining low CD44+/CD24- subpopulation in cancer cell lines. Interestingly, though MCF7 cell lines have high CD24 expression with mostly unmethylated CD24 promoter, it contain less than 1% CD44+/CD24- subpopulation with stem cell like phenotype. NGS analysis discovered hypermethylation (>90%) of CD24 proximal promoter in that stem cell like subpopulation. Functional studies like mammosphere formation assay suggested that stem cell properties are higher in subpopulation with CD24 proximal promoter hypermethylation. Altogether, our results suggest that CD24 proximal promoter methylation maybe a hormonally regulated mechanism and epigenetic regulation of CD24 is important in maintaining the phenotype of the low prevalent breast tumor initiating population. Current studies are in progress to further understand the clinical and therapeutic significance of this regulation.

Abstract
AIM Aim of the study was to assess the effect of socioeconomic deprivation on prescribing of cardiovascular secondary prevention medications in patients referred with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). METHODS A retrospective review of vascular clinic referrals was performed. All patients referred from primary care with suspected PAD over a two month period were included. The deprivation score, prescription of cardiovascular secondary prevention medications, smoking status and the presence of cardiovascular co-morbidities (coronary artery or cerebrovascular disease--CAD/CVD) were assessed. Comparison was made between socioeconomic groups using the Carstairs Deprivation (DepCat) Score and between patients with and without a history of currently existing cardiovascular co-morbidities. RESULTS The study included 391 patients. Almost two thirds of patients (253) were from the most deprived socioeconomic groups and were significantly younger at presentation (median age DepCat 7: 63 yrs, DepCat 1-2: 74.5 yrs, P<0.0001). The majority of patients with a prior history of CAD/CVD were prescribed secondary preventative medications at the time of referral with suspected PAD whereas those with no prior history of CAD/CVD, (212 patients, 54%) were significantly less likely to be prescribed antiplatelets (47% vs. 83%), statins (45% vs. 86%) or ACEi/ARBs (29% vs. 68%) (all P<0.05). Secondary prevention prescribing did not differ between socioeconomic groups. CONCLUSION Secondary prevention prescribing is inadequate in patients with suspected PAD regardless of socioeconomic group and is significantly lower in those without previously diagnosed CAD/CVD. There remains a lack of appreciation of the high cardiovascular risk associated with PAD.

Abstract
We report the crystallization of electrodeposited germanium (Ge) thin films on n-silicon (Si) (100) by rapid melting process. The electrodeposition was carried out in germanium (IV) chloride: propylene glycol (GeCl4:C3H8O2) electrolyte with constant current of 50 mA for 30 min. The measured Raman spectra and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) images show that the as-deposited Ge thin film was amorphous. The crystallization of deposited Ge was achieved by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at 980 °C for 1 s. The EBSD images confirm that the orientations of the annealed Ge are similar to that of the Si substrate. The highly intense peak of Raman spectra at 300 cm−1 corresponding to Ge-Ge vibration mode was observed, indicating good crystal quality of Ge. An additional sub peak near to 390 cm−1 corresponding to the Si-Ge vibration mode was also observed, indicating the Ge-Si mixing at Ge/Si interface. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) reveals that the intermixing depth was around 60 nm. The calculated Si fraction from Raman spectra was found to be in good agreement with the value estimated from Ge-Si equilibrium phase diagram. The proposed technique is expected to be an effective way to crystallize Ge films for various device applications as well as to create strain at the Ge-Si interface for enhancement of mobility.

Abstract
Beach vitex, Vitex rotundifolia L. fil., is a perennial that grows in temperate and tropical areas of the Pacific. In areas where it has been introduced outside of its native range, beach vitex has proven to be an invasive species. This plant dominates dune ecosystems leading to a reduction in the prevalence of native species (1). In October 2010, previously unknown leaf spots were observed on the beach vitex growing on sand dunes in Incheon City of Korea. The same symptoms were repeated in 2011 and 2012. In September 2012, the same leaf spots were found on the beach vitex in Samcheok and Gyeongju in Korea. The symptoms usually started as small, dark brown to purplish leaf spots with more or less concentric rings, eventually causing leaf blights or yellowing with 50% or more defoliation by the end of September. Representative samples (n = 6) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Conidiophores of the fungus observed microscopically on the leaf spots were erect, brown to dark brown, single or occasionally in clusters, 80 to 500 × 5 to 9 μm, and mostly arose on the abaxial surface of symptomatic leaves. Conidia were borne singly or in short chains of 2 to 4, ranging from cylindrical to broadest at the base and tapering apically, straight to slightly curved, pale olivaceous brown, 1 to 12 pseudoseptate, 50 to 250 × 8 to 18 μm, each with a conspicuous thickened hilum. On potato dextrose agar (PDA), single-spore cultures of two isolates were identified as Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) C.T. Wei on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics (3). Two monoconidial isolates were preserved at the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession Nos. KACC45712 and KACC46953). Isolate KACC45712 was used for molecular works and pathogenicity test. Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 520 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC987359). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequence showed 100% identity with those of C. cassiicola (e.g., JQ801302). To conduct a pathogenicity test, a conidial suspension (ca. 2 × 104 conidia/ml) was prepared by harvesting conidia from 2-week-old cultures, and the suspension was sprayed onto the leaves of three healthy seedlings. Inoculated plants were kept in humid chambers for 48 h in a glasshouse. After 5 days, typical leaf spot symptoms started to develop on the leaves of all three inoculated plants. C. cassiicola was reisolated from the lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. Control plants treated with sterile water remained symptomless. C. cassiicola is cosmopolitan with a very wide host range (2,4). To our knowledge, C. cassiicola has not been reported on Vitex spp. anywhere in the world. According to field observations in Korea, Corynespora leaf spot was most severe in August and September, especially following a prolonged period of moist weather. Abstract
Sansevieria, Sansevieria trifasciata Prain, is cultivated in greenhouses and is used as a potted interior foliage plant in Korea. In April 2012, several plants (cv. Moonshine) exhibiting typical anthracnose symptoms from a local nursery were sent to the plant clinic of Gyeonggi-Do Agricultural Research and Extension Services for diagnosis. The leaf lesions began as round, partly water-soaked, pale greenish to grayish spots, which enlarged and ultimately coalesced, resulting in severe leaf blight. Concentric rings of blackish acervuli were formed in the expanding lesions of mostly 2 to 4 cm in diameter. Acervuli were mostly epiphyllous, circular to ellipsoid. Setae were aseptate to 3-septate, dark brown at the base, paler upwards, acicular, and up to 180 μm long. Conidia (n = 30) were oblong-elliptical to obovate, sometimes fusiform-elliptical, guttulate, hyaline, and 14 to 24 × 5 to 7.5 μm (mean 18.6 × 6.4 μm). Hyphopodial appressoria were dark brown to blackish, globose to clavate in outline, and 5 to 12 × 4 to 8 μm. Colonies on potato dextrose agar (PDA) were grayish-white, felted with cottony-white aerial mycelium on a gray to olivaceous gray background in culture. Gelatinous salmon- to orange-colored conidial masses were produced abundantly after one week's incubation. The morphological and cultural characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the description of Colletotrichum sansevieriae M. Nakamura & M. Ohzono (2,3). A voucher specimen was deposited in the Korea University herbarium (KUS-F26637). An isolate was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46835). Fungal DNA was extracted with DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kits (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting 569-bp sequences were deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC847065). A BLAST search in GenBank exhibited 100% nucleotide identity with sequence of C. sansevieriae (JF911349) from the United States and >99% similarity with that of HQ433226 from Australia. To confirm pathogenicity, inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 3-week-old cultures on PDA. A conidial suspension (2 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed over the five leaves of sansevieria 'Moonshine' wounded with a fine needle. Five leaves sprayed with sterile water served as controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% relative humidity for 48 h and then kept in a greenhouse (22 to 28°C and 70 to 80% RH). Within 12 days, symptoms identical to those observed in originally infected leaf developed on all inoculated leaves. No symptoms were observed on control plants. C. sansevieriae was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Sansevieria anthracnose associated with C. sansevieriae has been reported in Japan (2), Australia (1), and the United States (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of sansevieria anthracnose in Korea. Our observations in sansevieria nurseries suggest that preventing wound infection as well as maintaining good plant hygiene in greenhouses might be main strategies for this disease. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adipogenesis can be spatially and temporally regulated by extracellular matrix (ECM). We hypothesized that the regulation of hyaluronic acid (HA), a component of the ECM, can affect adipogenesis in fat cells. The effects of HA on adipogenesis were investigated in vitro in 3T3-L1 cells and in vivo in high-fat diet-feeding C57BL/6J mice. METHODS We investigated the effects of HA by degradation of pre-existing or synthesized HA and artificial inhibition of HA synthesis in adipogenesis. RESULTS In vitro adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells was inhibited by treating them with exogenous hyaluronidase (HYAL) and with 4-methylumbelliferone, which inhibited the synthesis of HA in a concentration-dependent manner. In vivo, abdominal fat accumulation in high-fat diet-feeding C57BL/6J mice was suppressed by exogenous HYAL 10(4) IU injections, which was associated with reduction of lipid accumulation in liver and increase of insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSION Changes in the ECM such as accumulation of high molecular weight of HA by HAS and degradation of HA by endogenous HYAL were essential for adipogenesis both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
Background: This prospective, phase II trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of dovitinib in patients with metastatic and/or unresectable gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) after failure of at least imatinib and sunitinib. Methods: Patients received oral dovitinib, 500 mg once daily, for 5 consecutive days, followed by a 2-day rest, every 28 days. The primary endpoint was disease control rate (DCR; objective response+stable disease (SD)) at 24 weeks, assessed by computed tomography (CT) scan according to RECIST v1.0. Metabolic response was evaluated by positron emission tomography (PET)–CT scans performed at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment. Results: Between September 2011 and April 2012, 30 patients were enroled. DCR at 24 weeks by RECIST v1.0 was 13% and one patient (3%) had a partial response. Based on the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer PET response criteria, four patients (13%) had a metabolic partial response after 4 weeks of treatment. At a median follow-up of 8.3 months (range, 6.3–12.2 months), median progression-free survival (PFS) was 3.6 months (95% confidence interval (CI), 3.5–3.7 months) and median overall survival was 9.7 months (95% CI, 6.0–13.4 months). Metabolic progressive disease at Week 4 was significantly associated with shorter PFS (P=0.03). Grade 3/4 adverse events included asthenia (20%), neutropenia (13%), thrombocytopenia (10%), and hypertriglyceridaemia (10%). Most toxicities were manageable by dose modification. Conclusion: Dovitinib showed modest antitumour activity with manageable toxicities in heavily pretreated patients with advanced GISTs.

Abstract
Bidens pilosa L., known as Spanish needle or cobbler's peg, is a cosmopolitan weed, originating from South America and common in all tropical and subtropical areas of the world. In Korea, this plant was first reported in 1992 (3), and has become naturalized widely by replacing indigenous plants and disrupting native ecosystems. In the autumn of 2012, hundreds of Spanish needles growing around an industrial complex in Milyang in southern Korea were observed to be severely infected with a powdery mildew. Symptoms first appeared as circular to irregular white patches, which subsequently showed abundant hyphal growth on both sides of the leaves, and on young stems and inflorescences. Red-purplish discoloration and crinkling of the leaves were also observed. Appressoria on the mycelium were nipple-shaped or nearly absent. Conidiophores measured 100 to 190 × 11 to 13 μm, and produced 2 to 5 immature conidia in chains with a crenate outline, at the end of 2 to 3 straight cells of the conidiophore. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoid to barrel-shaped, measured 28 to 42 × 16.5 to 21 μm (length/width ratio of 1.4 to 2.0), and had distinct fibrosin bodies. Dark brown chasmothecia were found partly embedded in the mycelial felt on leaves and stems, were spherical, gregarious to scattered, and 80 to 100 μm in diameter. Each contained a single ascus and had a terminal oculus 17 to 23 μm wide. Asci were sessile, 70 to 90 × 52 to 65 μm, and contained eight ascospores, each 22 to 28 × 16 to 20 μm. The structures and measurements were consistent with those of Podosphaera xanthii (Castagne) U. Braun & Shishkoff (1). Specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). To confirm identity of the causal fungus, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of isolate KUS-F27201 was amplified with primers ITS5 and P3 (4), and sequenced directly. The resulting 476-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC484700). A GenBank BLAST search of this sequence revealed >99% similarity with those of many P. xanthii isolates on plants in the Asteraceae. Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaf onto leaves of five healthy, potted, young Spanish needle plants. Five non-inoculated plants served as a control treatment. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 25 ± 2°C. Inoculated plants developed symptoms after 8 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated plants was identical morphologically to that originally observed on diseased plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Powdery mildews of B. pilosa caused by Podosphaera species have been reported in North America, Africa, and Asia (India and China), but not from Korea (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew caused by P. xanthii on Spanish needles in Korea. Abstract
Solidago gigantea Aiton (syn. S. serotina Aiton), known as giant goldenrod, is native to North America and has been invasive in Europe and Asia. In Korea, this plant was accidentally introduced around the 1960s and has become widely naturalized by replacing indigenous plants and disrupting the native ecosystem (3). In October 2012, hundreds of giant goldenrod plants growing wild in riverine areas and roadsides were found affected by a powdery mildew in Busan, Korea. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Symptoms first appeared as circular to irregular white patches, which subsequently showed abundant hyphal growth on both sides of the leaves. Appressoria on the mycelium were nipple-shaped to moderately lobed. Conidiophores measured 120 to 240 × 10 to 12.5 μm, were arising laterally from hyphal mother cells, and produced 2 to 6 immature conidia in chains with a sinuate outline, followed by 2 to 3 cells. Foot-cells in conidiophores were 42 to 70 μm long and characterized by a distinctly curved base. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoid to ovate, measured 28 to 42 × 17 to 24 μm (length/width ratio = 1.4 to 2.1), contained small oil drops, lacked distinct fibrosin bodies, and produced germ tubes on the subterminal position. No chasmothecia were observed. The morphological characteristics described above were typical of the Euoidium type anamorph of the genus Golovinomyces, and the fungus measurements and structures were consistent with those of G. asterum var. solidaginis U. Braun (1). To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, the complete ITS region of rDNA from isolate KUS-F27219 was amplified with primers ITS5 and P3 (4) and sequenced. The resulting 508-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC513763). A GenBank BLAST search of this sequence revealed >99% similarity with the ITS sequences of G. cichoracearum from Australia (GQ183940 ex Solidago sp.) and Japan (AB077625 ex S. altissima L. and AB077627 ex S. virgaurea subsp. asiatica Kitam. ex Hara). The G. cichoracearum isolates on Solidago spp. listed above are now placed in G. asterum var. solidaginis (1). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaves onto leaves of five healthy potted giant goldenrods. Five non-inoculated plants served as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 24 to 30°C. Inoculated plants developed signs and symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on inoculated plants was morphologically identical to that originally observed, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Association of S. gigantea with Golovinomyces powdery mildews has been known in North America, South America, Europe, New Zealand, Central Asia (Iran, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan), and Japan (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew caused by G. asterum var. solidaginis on S. gigantea in Korea. Abstract
Oriental white oak, Quercus aliena Blume, is native to East Asia including Korea. It is one of the major deciduous tree species in natural forests in Korea. In May 2012, several hundred trees were found to be heavily damaged by a previously unknown leaf disease in a forest near Songjiho Lake in Goseong County of central Korea. Leaf symptoms began as small, water-soaked, pale greenish to grayish lesions, which enlarged to follow the veins or midribs and to be bounded by them, often killing part of the leaf. Leaf distortion and blight resulted in the later stage of disease development. A number of grayish brown to nearly black acervuli were formed on the lesions, especially on the midribs and veins. Acervuli were mostly hypophyllous, intraepidermal, erumpent, circular to ellipsoid in outline, cushion-like, and 70 to 220 μm in diameter. Conidia (n = 30) were elliptical to fusiform-elliptical, occasionally obclavate, aguttulate or guttulate, hyaline, aseptate, and 7.5 to 20 × 5 to 7.5 μm (mean 14.6 × 6.1 μm). These morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the description of conidial state of Apiognomonia errabunda (Roberge ex Desm.) Höhn. (3,4). Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). An isolate obtained from KUS-F26690 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46842). Fungal DNA was extracted with DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kits (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting 549-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (KC426947). This showed >99% similarity with sequences of A. errabunda (AJ888475 to 888477). For pathogenicity test, inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 4-week-old cultures on potato dextrose agar. A conidial suspension (1 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto young leaves of three potted seedlings. Three seedlings treated with sterile distilled water served as controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% relative humidity for 24 h and then kept in a greenhouse (20 to 26°C and 60 to 80% RH). After 26 days, typical leaf spot symptoms, identical to the ones observed in the field, developed on the inoculated leaves. No symptoms were observed on controls. A. errabunda was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Oak anthracnose associated with A. errabunda (including A. quercina) has been recorded in Europe and North America (1,4). Oak anthracnose of evergreen Quercus glauca Thunb. (syn. Cyclobalanopsis glauca (Thunb.) Oerst.) associated with A. supraseptata in Japan is not related to this disease (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of oak anthracnose of Q. aliena globally and also the first finding of A. errabunda in Asia as well as in Korea. This pathogen is known as one of the major forest pathogens in oak stand in Europe and North America (3). Pending further studies, including a risk assessment, A. errabunda may be considered as a potentially new and serious threat in native and planted ranges of Q. aliena in Korea. References: (1) D. F. Abstract
Japanese hop (Humulus japonicus Siebold & Zucc. = H. scandens (Lour.) Merr.), native to East Asia, is an annual, climbing or trailing vine. The vines can spread to cover large areas of open ground or low vegetation, eventually blanketing the land and vegetation. Pollen of H. japonicus is allergenic, and this species is considered as one of the important causes of pollinosis in Korea and China. It is a notorious invasive weed in the United States and also in France, Hungary, and Italy (1). In September 2012, zonate leaf spots were observed on Japanese hops growing in wetlands in Yeongdong County of Korea. A voucher specimen was preserved in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS-F26901). Initial symptoms included grayish-green to grayish-brown spots without border lines. As the lesions enlarged, they coalesced, leading to leaf blight. Sporophores on the leaf lesions were dominantly hypophyllous, rarely epiphyllous, solitary, erect, easily detachable, and as long as 700 μm. The upper portion of the sporophores consisted of a pyramidal head was ventricose, 320 to 520 μm long and 110 to 150 μm wide. The fungus was isolated from leaf lesions and maintained on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Sclerotia were produced on PDA after 4 to 5 weeks at 18°C without light, but conidia were not observed in culture. These morphological and cultural characteristics were consistent with those of Hinomyces moricola (I. Hino) Narumi-Saito & Y. Harada (= Cristulariella moricola (I. Hino) Redhead) (3,4). An isolate was preserved in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46955). Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 452 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC460209). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequence showed an exact match with those of C. moricola (JQ036181 ex Acer negundo and JQ036182 ex Glycine max). To determine the pathogenicity of the fungus, according to the procedure of Cho et al. (2), sporophores with the pyramidal head were carefully detached from a lesion on the naturally infected leaf using a needle. Each sporophore was transferred individually onto five places of four detached healthy leaves. The leaves were placed in dew chambers and incubated at 16°C. Symptoms were observed after 2 days on all inoculated leaves. A number of sporophores and immature sclerotia which were morphologically identical to the ones observed in the field were formed on the abaxial surface of the leaf 2 weeks after inoculation. The pathogen was reisolated from lesions on the inoculated leaves, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on the control leaves kept in humid chambers for 2 weeks. H. moricola was known to cause zonate leaf spots and defoliation on a wide range of woody and annual plants (3). Abstract
Hibiscus mutabilis L., known as cotton rose, is a deciduous shrub native to China. Horticultural varieties of the species are widely planted throughout the world (4). In September 2012, typical powdery mildew symptoms on the cotton rose were observed in a public garden of Jeju City, Korea. Powdery mildew colonies were circular to irregular white patches on both sides of the leaves and also on young stems and sepals. As the disease progressed, white mycelial growth covered the entire shoot portion, causing leaf distortion. In the middle of November, numerous chasmothecia were formed on the lesions. Voucher specimens (n = 4) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Hyphal appressoria were only swollen part of hyphae or occasionally nipple-shaped. Conidiophores were 140 to 275 × 10 to 11.5 μm and produced 2 to 8 immature conidia in chains with a crenate outline. Foot-cells of conidiophores were straight, 30 to 65 μm long, and cylindric. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoid-ovoid, and measured 27 to 42 × 17.5 to 21 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.5 to 2.4, and had distinct fibrosin bodies. Chasmothecia were amphigenous, cauligenous, 85 to 110 μm in diameter, and contained one ascus each. Peridium cells of chasmothecia were irregularly polygonal, large, and 15 to 38 μm wide. Appendages were mycelioid, 1- to 6-septate, brown at the base, and becoming paler. Asci were sessile, oval to broadly fusiform, with terminal oculus of 15 to 20 μm wide. Ascospores numbered eight per ascus were ellipsoidal, 19 to 25 × 14 to 16 μm. The morphological characteristics were consistent with previous records of P. xanthii (Castagne) U. Braun & Shishkoff (1). To confirm the identification, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA from isolate KUS-F27134 was amplified with the primers ITS5 and P3 and sequenced (3). The resulting sequence of 477 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KC460208). The Korean isolate showed >99% similarity with dozens of sequences of P. xanthii ex cucurbitaceous hosts (e.g., JQ912061, JQ409565, HM070403, etc.) as well as Podosphaera sp. ex H. mutabilis from Japan (AB040308). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation tests by gently pressing diseased leaves onto young leaves of three asymptomatic, potted 2-year-old seedlings. Three non-inoculated seedlings were used as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 24 to 30°C. Inoculated leaves developed symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated leaves was morphologically identical to that observed on the original diseased leaves, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Powdery mildew infections of H. mutabilis associated with P. xanthii (including P. fuliginea in broad sense) have been known in China, Japan, and Taiwan (1,2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew caused by P. xanthii on H. mutabilis in Korea. Since Jeju, the southmost island of Korea, is the only habitat of cotton rose in Korea and is the northmost natural habitat in Asia, powdery mildew is a new threat to the health of wild populations of cotton rose. Abstract
Common fig (Ficus carica L.) was introduced into Korea in the 1890s from Japan and planted in residential gardens for home consumption. Commercial cultivation of the tree did not begin until the 1990s (2). In early August 2012, several dozen unripened fig fruits, cv. Banane, were found damaged by fruit rot in an experimental plot of Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Iksan City, South Korea (GPS coordinates 35°56'38.44″ N, 126°59'37.14″ E). Though infections recurred until late September, infection rates were as low as 1 to 5%. Early symptoms appeared as small, slightly sunken, water-soaked, and circular spots. Lesions increased in size, became more depressed, with a darkened central portion. The darkened areas contained blackish acervuli from which masses of salmon-colored conidia were released in moist weather. A semisoft decay resulted, sometimes causing premature fruit drop. No symptoms were found on leaves. Acervuli were circular to ellipsoid, 50 to 400 μm in diameter. Acervular setae were 2- to 3-septate, dark brown at the base, paler toward the apices, acicular, and up to 120 μm long. Conidia (n = 30) were long obclavate to oblong-elliptical, sometimes fusiform-elliptical, guttulate, hyaline, and 16 to 21 × 4 to 6 μm. These characters were consistent with the description of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. (4). From an isolate (KACC46943, deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection), fungal DNA was extracted, and the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1(5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3')/ITS4(5'-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3') and sequenced. The resulting 606-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (KC430919). The sequence showed 100% identity with sequences of C. gloeosporioides (e.g., JX669446, JQ936316, JQ753973). To confirm pathogenicity, inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 3-week-old cultures on potato dextrose agar. A conidial suspension (3 × 105 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto 10 fruits wounded with a fine needle. Ten fruits sprayed with sterile water served as controls. Fruits were placed in moist chambers for 24 h and then kept in plastic containers (25°C and 60 to 80% RH). After 5 days, fruit rot symptoms, identical to those observed in the field, developed on the inoculated fruits, but never on controls. C. gloeosporioides was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated fruits. Anthracnose associated with C. gloeosporioides on common figs has been known from North America, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Turkey (1). In Korea, anthracnose fruit rot of common figs was recorded in 1928 under the name C. caricae F. Stevens & J.G. Hall, but without fulfillment of Koch's postulates (3). Subsequent to that time, there has been no published finding of the disease in Korea. C. caricae is regarded as synonymous with C. gloeosporioides (4). To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of anthracnose fruit rot of common figs caused by C. gloeosporioides in Korea. Abstract
In Korea, anemones (Anemone coronaria L.) are mostly grown during winter, in polyethylene tunnels that may have high humidity and poor ventilation, to meet the high demand of cut flowers in February and March for school ceremonies. During the winter of 2011 to 2012, symptoms typical of Sclerotinia stem rot were observed in commercial crops of anemone (cv. Rosso Mistral Plus) in Hwaseong City, Korea. About 40% of anemones withered or died before harvest due to the disease, causing considerable economic losses. In one farmer's polyethylene tunnel with a good ventilation system in Icheon City, Korea, less than 1% of the anemones showed Sclerotinia stem rot during the same season. Symptoms included stem necrosis and withering of leaves, followed by crown rot and wilt a few days afterward. White cottony growth of the fungus was observed on dead plants and the nearby soil surface, especially under high relative humidity. Black sclerotia 2 to 7 mm in diameter developed in the mycelium. Isolations from surface-disinfested stem pieces onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) consistently yielded white, fluffy colonies. Two-week-old colonies produced plentiful numbers of sclerotia on PDA. The isolated fungus was morphologically identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary (1,3). Voucher specimens (n = 4) were deposited in the Korea University herbarium (KUS). Two isolates were deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection with accession numbers KACC46708 (ex KUS-F26433) and KACC46834 (ex KUS-F26437), respectively. Fungal DNA was extracted with a DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 (4) and sequenced using an ABI Prism 337 automatic DNA sequencer (Applied Biosystems, Foster, CA). The resulting sequences of 501 bp were deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. KC412065 and KC412066). A BLAST search revealed that sequences of the two Korean isolates showed 100% identity with those of S. sclerotiorum (e.g., GenBank Accession No. JN012606). A pathogenicity test was achieved by placing agar segments (9 mm2) from a 7-day-old culture grown on PDA on the stems of healthy anemones (cv. Rosso Mistral Plus) near the soil line. Three plants inoculated with agar blocks served as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 16 to 20°C and relative humidity >90%. After 2 days, all inoculated stems became discolored, soft, watery, and covered with white mycelia, whereas control plants remained symptomless. S. sclerotiorum was consistently reisolated from the symptomatic tissue, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Sclerotinia stem rot of anemones caused by S. sclerotiorum has previously been recorded from the United States and New Zealand (2), and to our knowledge, this is the first report of S. sclerotiorum on anemone in Korea. According to our observations in damaged plots, low temperature, high humidity, poor ventilation, and continuous cultivation would accelerate the incidence of Sclerotinia stem rot in polyethylene tunnel cultivation systems in Korea. Abstract
Melia azedarach L., called chinaberry, is native to Southeast Asia and Australia. The trees are commonly planted as ornamentals in the southern part of Korea. In October 2010, a leaf spot disease was observed on trees for the first time in Wando, Korea. Further surveys conducted from 2010 to 2012 showed that the disease occurs on trees in Jeju, Seogwipo, and Tongyeong cities as well as Wando county with nearly 100% incidence. Leaf spots were circular to semicircular, later becoming angular, small, pale brown in the center with a dark brown margin, and later becoming milky white. Leaf spots sometimes coalesced to blight the entire leaf and were capable of rapidly defoliating whole trees in late September. Fruiting was amphigenous, but mostly hypogenous. Stromata were substomatal, globular, dark brown, and 25 to 70 μm in diameter. Conidiophores were densely fasciculate, pale olivaceous to pale brown, substraight to mildly curved, not geniculate, 10 to 30 μm long, 2.5 to 4.5 μm wide, and aseptate or uniseptate. Conidia were pale olivaceous, generally darker than conidiophores, cylindric to obclavate, substraight in shorter ones, curved to mildly sinuous in longer ones, obconically truncate at the base, obtuse at the apex, 2- to 14-septate, 16 to 120 × 3 to 5 μm, guttulate, and had inconspicuous hila. Morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the previous descriptions of Pseudocercospora subsessilis (Syd. & P. Syd.) Deighton (2). Voucher specimens (n = 6) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). An isolate from KUS-F25395 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC45688). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 (3) and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 517 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX993904). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequence shows >99% similarity (1 bp substitution) with a sequence of P. subsessilis ex M. azedarach from Cuba (GU269815). For pathogenicity tests, hyphal suspensions were prepared by grinding 3-week-old colonies grown on potato dextrose agar with distilled water using a mortar and pestle. Five 3-year-old chinaberry trees were inoculated with hyphal suspensions using a fine haired paint brush. Three healthy trees of the same age, serving as controls, were sprayed with sterile water. The plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% relative humidity for 24 h and then transferred to a greenhouse. Typical symptoms of necrotic spots that appeared on the inoculated leaves 10 days after inoculation were identical to the ones observed in the field. P. subsessilis was reisolated from symptomatic leaf tissues, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. The disease has been reported in several Asian countries as well as in Cuba and the United States (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot on chinaberry caused by P. subsessilis in Korea. Abstract
BACKGROUND This study estimates the burden of disease in Korea during 2000-10, using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS DALYs are the sum of years of life lost from mortality and years of life lost from disability. DALYs for 24 major diseases in 2000, 2005 and 2010 Korea were calculated based on the Global Burden of Disease Study method. RESULTS As in other advanced nations, the burden of disease in Korea is characterized by an increasing importance of cancer, unipolar depression and ischemic heart disease (1681, 1508 and 562 person-years for Year 2010 in terms of DALYs per 10 0000, respectively). At the same time, unipolar depression, liver cirrhosis and mental and behavioral disorder due to alcohol use (1508, 323 and 535 person-years for 2010, respectively) became much more common in Korea than in other advanced nations. CONCLUSIONS The burden of disease in Korea follows the pattern of other advanced nations in general but also registers some unique characteristics affected by the nation's distinctive epidemiological and sociocultural contexts, e.g. rapid economic growth and dramatic social transition without appropriate policy response. Korea's health and welfare policy might need to incorporate these special conditions for the effective reduction of its disease burden.

Abstract
Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus L., is a flowering shrub in the family Malvaceae planted as the national flower of South Korea. In September 2012, previously unknown leaf spots with premature defoliation were observed on dozens of Rose of Sharon plants growing in the shaded area in a park of Dongducheon, Korea. The same symptoms were found on Rose of Sharon in several localities of Korea in 2012. The symptoms usually started as small, dark brown to grayish leaf spots, eventually causing leaf yellowing with significant premature defoliation. The diseased leaves retained for a while green color at the margin of the spots. Representative samples (n = 5) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Conidiophores of the fungus observed microscopically on the leaf spots were erect, brown to dark brown, single or in clusters, amphigenous but mostly hypophyllous, and measured 80 to 400 × 5 to 10 μm. Conidia were borne singly or in short chains, ranging from cylindrical to broadest at the base and tapering apically, straight to slightly curved, pale olivaceous brown, 2 to 16 pseudoseptate, 50 to 260 × 9 to 20 μm, each with a conspicuous thickened hilum. On potato dextrose agar, single-spore cultures of two isolates were identified as Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) C.T. Wei on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics (1,2). Two monoconidial isolates were preserved at the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC46956 and KACC46957). Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequences of 520 bp were deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. KC193256, KC193257). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequences showed 100% identity with those of numerous C. cassiicola isolates from diverse substrates. To conduct a pathogenicity test, a conidial suspension (ca. 2 × 104 conidia/ml) was prepared in sterile water by harvesting conidia from 2-week-old cultures of KACC46956, and the suspension was sprayed onto the leaves of three healthy 2-year-old plants. Inoculated plants were kept in humid chambers for the first 48 h and thereafter placed in the glasshouse. After 10 days, typical leaf spot symptoms developed on the leaves of all three inoculated plants. C. cassiicola was reisolated from the lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. Control plants treated with sterile water remained symptomless. C. cassiicola is cosmopolitan with a very wide host range (1,2). Though Corynespora hibisci Goto was recorded to be associated with brown spot disease of H. syriacus in Japan (4), there is no previous record of C. cassiicola on H. syriacus (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Corynespora leaf spot on Rose of Sharon in Korea. According to our field observations in Korea, this disease was found in August and September, following a prolonged period of moist weather. Abstract
BACKGROUNDS A pegylated form of recombinant granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) was developed for prophylactic use in breast cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of once-per-cycle DA-3031 in patients receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. METHODS A total of 61 patients receiving docetaxel, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (TAC) chemotherapy were randomized in cycle 1 to receive daily injections of filgrastim (100 μg/m(2)) or a single subcutaneous injection of pegylated filgrastim DA-3031 at a dose of either 3.6 mg or 6 mg. RESULTS The mean duration of grade 4 neutropenia in cycle 1 was comparable among the treatment groups (2.48, 2.20, and 2.05 days for filgrastim, DA-3031 3.6 mg and 6 mg, respectively; P=0.275). No statistically significant differences were observed in the incidence of febrile neutropenia between the treatment groups (9.5 %, 15.0 %, and 5.0 % for filgrastim, DA-3031 3.6 mg and 6 mg, respectively; P=0.681) in cycle 1. The incidences of adverse events attributable to G-CSF were similar among the treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS Fixed doses of 3.6 mg or 6 mg DA-3031 have an efficacy comparable to that of daily injections of filgrastim in ameliorating grade 4 neutropenia in patients receiving TAC chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT), we evaluated if there was any difference in grafted kidney function according to the type of anesthetic used in the donor because some laboratory studies have demonstrated that volatile anesthetics at clinically relevant concentrations protect the kidneys against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS In part I of the study, we retrospectively compared grafted kidney function [serum creatinine levels (Cr) and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) in recipients of LDKT] according to the type of donors' volatile anesthetic (sevoflurane [group Sevo, 166 patients], isoflurane [group Iso, 55] or desflurane [group Des, 61]). In part II, we prospectively compared grafted kidney function and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in the serum and urine of recipients according to the anesthetic used in the donor (desflurane [group Des, N.=50] vs. propofol [group Pro, N.=50]). RESULTS In part I, the eGFR of the Des group was greater than that of the Sevo or Iso groups (P=0.017) until POD 7. However, in part II, there were no significant changes in Cr and eGFR by POD 7, no differences in the levels of NGAL in the serum and urine on POD 1 and 2, or in Cr and eGFR on the day of discharge between the Des and Pro groups. CONCLUSIONS The inhalational anesthetic administered to donors does not improve grafted kidney function in recipients undergoing LDKT to a greater extent than propofol.

Abstract
Sacral osteomyelitis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of pelvic surgery. It is often diagnosed late due to the presence of vague, non-specific symptoms and a low index of suspicion. Previous literature has been limited to a number of case series of patients who have undergone ileoanal pouch formation following proctocolectomy and patients who have undergone pelvic floor reconstruction with mesh sacral colpopexy. Here, we present a patient presenting with sacral osteomyelitis 12 years following anterior resection for colorectal malignancy. We then review the previous literature and discuss the salient management points that may assist in the diagnosis and management of this uncommon complication.

Abstract
Background: We aimed to determine the role of palliative resection in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and ascertain which patient populations would benefit most from this treatment. Methods: A total of 1015 patients diagnosed with mCRC at Seoul National University Hospital between 2000 and 2009 were retrospectively studied. Results: Of the 1015 patients, 168 patients with only liver and/or lung metastasis received curative resection. The remaining 847 patients were treated with palliative chemotherapy and/or palliative resection combined with best supportive care. Palliative resection was performed in 527 (62.2%) cases (complete resection with negative margin (R0) in 93, R1/2 in 434). Resected patients had a more prolonged median overall survival (OS) than unresected patients (21.3 vs 14.1 months; P<0.001). In multivariate analysis, R0 resection was found to be associated with a superior OS compared with R1/2 resection (51.3 vs 19.1 months; P<0.001) and no resection (51.3 vs 14.1 months; P<0.001). When we performed propensity score matching, palliative resection was found to be related to prolonged OS (hazard ratio=0.72, 95% confidence interval=0.59–0.89; P=0.003). Conclusion: Palliative resection without residual disease and chemotherapy confers a longer-term survival outcome than palliative chemotherapy alone in mCRC patient subset.

Abstract
Sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum L., is cultivated mainly for fresh consumption in Korea. In March 2009, in Icheon, Korea, several dozen plants showing symptoms of black stems were found in an organic farm that used polyethylene tunnels for production. The black stems were usually covered with a fungus that gave the appearance of hoar-frost on the stems, especially when plants were grown under a cool and humid environment. According to the farmer, black stems appear during the winter season of November to March when the tunnels were mostly closed. The relative humidity (RH) during that period was around 100% every night due to poor ventilation. Beginning the middle of April when both sides of the tunnels were open, providing good ventilation, no further disease development was observed. The fungus on the stems had an elongate, upright conidiophore, reaching 5 mm in length. At intervals along its length, the main axis of conidiophores produced lateral fertile branches in acropetal succession. Each lateral branch terminated in a cluster of four or five ampullae. Conidia were hyaline, oval, and 5.5 to 9.5 × 3.5 to 6 μm. The fungus was non-pigmented and colonies on potato dextrose agar were chalk white. Morphological and cultural characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the previous reports of Botryosporium longibrachiatum (Oudem.) Maire (3,4). Voucher specimens (n = 4) were housed at Korea University Herbarium (KUS). An isolate from KUS-F24010 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC44849) and used for molecular analysis and pathogenicity tests. The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 592 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX666334). A BLAST search in GenBank showed that there was no comparable sequence of B. longibrachiatum and thus this was the first ITS sequence for the species submitted in GenBank. To confirm the pathogenicity, colonized mycelial plugs (3 mm in diameter) from 10-day-old PDA cultures were placed onto the stem apices (n = 10) of 2-month-old sweet basil pot plants, which were topped as normally harvested. Control plants were inoculated with uncolonized agar plugs. All plants were incubated at 22 ± 2°C in a humidified chamber with a 12-h photoperiod for 48 h, and then maintained in a greenhouse (22 ± 2°C). Three to four days after inoculation, necrotic lesions developed around the points of inoculation on all stems and expanded downwards, leading to black stems covered with the hoar-frost like fungus after 14 days. B. longibrachiatum was successfully reisolated from all inoculated stems, while control plants remained symptomless. The pathogenicity test was conducted twice with the same result. The association of B. longibrachiatum and sweet basil was previously reported (4). Several other plants including burley tobacco are also reported to be infected by this fungus (1,2). Abstract
In September 2011, hundreds of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) showing symptoms of blight with nearly 100% incidence (percentage of plants affected) were found in polyethylene tunnels at an organic farm in Gangneung City of Korea. Lesions on needles and branches of the ferns were small, elliptic to subcircular, pale tan to brown with reddish brown borders, and became gray and cottony due to heavy sporulation under continuous high humidity. Infection caused premature defoliation and weakened plant vigor. The damage purportedly due to this disease has reappeared with confirmation of the causal agent made again in 2012. A cercosporoid fungus was consistently associated with disease symptoms. Stromata were well developed, consisting of brown cells, and were 10 to 30 μm wide. Conidiophores were fasciculate (n = 2 to 12), olivaceous brown, paler upwards, straight to mildly curved, not geniculate in shorter ones, or 1 to 2 times geniculate in longer ones, 40 to 260 μm long, 3.5 to 5.5 μm wide, and 1- to 6-septate. Conidia were hyaline, cylindric to acicular, straight in shorter ones, curved in longer ones, truncate to obconically truncate at the base with darkened hila, guttulate, 2- to 12-septate, and 40 to 220 × 3 to 5 μm. Morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the previous reports of Cercospora asparagi Sacc. (1). Voucher specimens were housed at the Korea University herbarium (KUS). An isolate from KUS-F26046 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46400). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 497 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX964995). This showed >99% similarity with sequences of many Cercospora species, indicating their close phylogenetic relationship. For pathogenicity tests, conidial suspensions (105 conidia/ml) were prepared by culturing the fungus on V8 juice agar (2) for 3 weeks. Five plants were inoculated with conidial suspensions and five plants were sprayed with sterile distilled water. The plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% RH for 24 h and then transferred to a greenhouse. Typical symptoms of necrotic lesions appeared on the inoculated plants 6 days after treatment, and were identical to the ones observed in the field. C. asparagi was reisolated from symptomatic tissues, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. The disease has been reported through the regions of the world where asparagus is grown (3). In Korea, the disease was recorded in 1928 by Japanese workers under Cercosporina asparagicola Speg. (regarded as synonymous with Cercospora asparagi) with brief notes (4). Though one sample of asparagus was sent to the author (KSH) for diagnosis in 2009 summer and determined to be infected with C. asparagi (unpublished data), there has been no additional finding of the disease in Korea for the last 82 years. Abstract
Persian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus L.) is an ornamental plant cultivated mainly in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, and has recently become popular in Korea. During March and April 2012, Persian buttercups 'Elegance' showing symptoms of downy mildew were found in plastic greenhouses in Hwaseong City of Korea. Infection resulted in chlorotic leaves with a dark greyish and dense fungal-like growth on the lower surfaces, and finally led to necrosis of the lesions. A sample was deposited in the Korea University herbarium (KUS-F26431). Conidiophores emerging from stomata were hyaline, 250 to 550 × 7 to 15 μm, straight, and dichotomously branched in 6 to 8 orders. Ultimate branchlets were mostly in pairs, slightly curved, 5 to 15 μm long, and had obtuse tips. Conidia were brown, broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose or ellipsoidal, often pedicellated, and measured 24 to 33 × 20 to 27 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.15 to 1.30. Fourteen species of Peronospora have previously been described on the genus Ranunculus (2), of which P. ficariae was mostly considered the causal agent of downy mildew on Persian buttercup (1,3). The present Korean accession is morphologically distinct from P. ficariae on R. ficaria (a synonym of Ficaria verna) by somewhat larger conidia with often pedicel-like ends. The nuclear ribosomal LSU and ITS regions were PCR-amplified and sequenced as described in Göker et al. (4), and the resulting sequences deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. KC111207 and JX465737, respectively). A comparison with the GenBank sequences revealed that the present Korean pathogen differed from P. ficariae on R. ficaria at 10 of 688 characters (about 1.5%) in LSU (AF119600) and 11 of 802 characters (about 1.4%) in ITS sequences (unpublished sequence). In addition, the ITS sequence exhibits a dissimilarity of 1.5 to 2.0% from three species of Peronospora parasitic on Ranunculus; P. alpicola on R. aconitifolius (AY198271), P. illyrica on R. illyricus (AY198268), and P. ranunculi on R. acris (AY198267) and R. recurvatus (AY198269). Based on morphological and molecular distinction between P. ficariae and the Korean pathogen, we provisionally indicate this pathogen as an undetermined species of Peronospora. Pathogenicity was demonstrated by shaking diseased leaves onto the leaves of healthy Persian buttercup 'Elegance', incubating the plants in a dew chamber at 20°C for 24 h, and then maintaining them in a greenhouse (20 to 24°C and relative humidity 60 to 80%). After 3 to 4 days, inoculated plants developed downy mildew symptoms, from which an identical fungus was observed, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. Control plants treated with sterile water did not develop any symptoms of downy mildew. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a downy mildew on Persian buttercup in Asia, although this disease has been found in other continental countries, such as Italy (1), New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States (3). The presence of a downy mildew on Persian buttercup in Asia can be considered as a potentially new and serious threat to commercial production of this ornamental plant. References: (1) E. Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of gradual ulnar correction and lengthening using the modified Ilizarov technique for the treatment of forearm deformities in patients with multiple cartilaginous exostoses. We retrospectively reviewed 23 forearms in 16 patients. Three different types of operative procedures were performed: (1) corrective osteotomy and gradual lengthening of the ulna, (2) corrective osteotomy of the radius, and (3) excision of exostoses. We evaluated the radiographs; range of motion of the wrist, forearm, and elbow; and functional status using a questionnaire before and after operation. During the clinical interview, post-operative functional status was significantly improved than pre-operative functional status, 12 patients stated that they had no difficulty in performing daily activities, 11 patients stated that they had no pain, and 11 patients stated that the post-operative appearance of the operated forearm was satisfactory. At time of final follow-up, the mean range of motion of the wrist in ulnar/radial deviation, forearm pronation/supination was significantly improved. Also, the radiographic parameters including radial articular angle, carpal slip, radial bowing, and ulnar variance were significantly improved at time of final follow-up. In conclusion, we achieved successful clinical and radiological outcomes in our patients with forearm deformities after treatment with the modified Ilizarov method. However, there could be a recurrence of ulnar shortening and deformity during growth periods in skeletally immature patients.

Abstract
This paper considers the problem of delay-dependent stability criteria for neural networks with time-varying delays. First, by constructing a newly augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a less conservative stability criterion is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Second, by proposing novel activation function conditions which have not been proposed so far, further improved stability criteria are proposed. Finally, three numerical examples used in the literature are given to show the improvements over the existing criteria and the effectiveness of the proposed idea.

Abstract
Several studies have indicated a positive response of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to mandibular advancement, while others have reported that TMJ adaptive responses are non-existent and negligible. Controversy continues to grow over the precise nature of skeletal changes that occur during mandibular growth modification, due to an apparent lack of tissue markers required to substantiate the precise mechanism by which this is occurring. However, evidence suggests that orthopedic forces clinically modify the growth of the mandible. To further our knowledge about the effect of orthopedic treatment on the TMJ, it is necessary that we understand the biologic basis behind the various tissues involved in the TMJ's normal growth and maturation. The importance of this knowledge is to consider the potential association between TMJ remodeling and mandibular repositioning under orthopedic loading. Considerable histologic and biochemical research has been performed to provide basic information about the nature of skeletal growth modification in response to mandibular advancement. In this review, the relevant histochemical evidence and various theories regarding TMJ growth modification are discussed. Furthermore, different regulatory growth factors and tissue markers, which are used for cellular and molecular evaluation of the TMJ during its adaptive response to biomechanical forces, are underlined.

Abstract
Polysaccharide-based nanoparticles have attracted interest as carriers for imaging and therapeutic agents because of their unique physicochemical properties, including biocompatibility and biodegradability. In addition, the functional groups of the polysaccharide backbone allow facile chemical modification to develop nanoparticles with diverse structures. Some polysaccharides have the intrinsic ability to recognize specific cell types, facilitating the design of targeted-drug delivery systems through receptor-mediated endocytosis. The main objective of this review is to provide an overview of various polysaccharide-based nanoparticles and to highlight the recent efforts that have been made to improve the characteristics of polysaccharide-based nanoparticles for drug delivery and biomedical imaging.

Abstract
Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai), also known as Japanese or Korean pear, is widely cultivated in East Asia. On September 2011, irregularly shaped necrotic lesions were observed on leaves of cv. Shinheung growing in an orchard in Gangneung City, Korea. At 40× magnification under a microscope, the white to cream colored propagules were epiphyllous, conical, scattered to aggregated, and composed of stroma-like bases, globose to subglobose, 55 to 100 μm wide and 35 to 75 μm high with filamentous and claviform hyphae. The filamentous hyphae were cylindrical, 125 to 425 × 3.5 to 6 μm, 2- to 8-septate, and obtuse to subobtuse at the apex. The claviform hyphae were clavate to cylindrical, 35 to 125 × 5 to 12.5 μm, aseptate to 3-septate, and obtuse at the apex. The fungus was isolated from leaf lesions and cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The colonies consisted of thin mycelia colored whitish at first and then pale brown on PDA. Sclerotia were produced on PDA after 2 weeks incubation at 15°C, but conidia were not observed in culture. An isolate from KUS-F26196 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. 25 KACC46693). These morphological and cultural characteristics were consistent with Mycopappus alni (Dearn. & Barthol.) Redhead & G.P. White (1,3,4). Fungal DNA was extracted with DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kits (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence product of 520 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX458815). A BLAST search in GenBank revealed that the sequence was 99% similar to M. alni (AB254190, AB254177, AB254189). To determine the pathogenicity of the fungus, propagules were detached from lesions on the naturally infected leaves using fine needles. Each propagule was transferred individually onto five places of six detached healthy leaves. Control treatment comprised placing small agar blocks onto five places of six detached healthy leaves. The plants were incubated in a humid chamber at RH 100% and 18°C. Symptoms were observed after 2 days on all inoculated leaves. The pathogen was reisolated from lesions on the inoculated leaves, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control leaves. The fungus has been associated with frosty mildew on Alnus spp., Betula spp., Crataegus spp., and Pyrus spp. in North America, Turkey, Russia, and Japan (1,2,4). To our knowledge, this is the first report of frosty mildew on P. pyrifolia caused by M. alni globally as well as in Korea. Since the infections may be limited to the mountainous area with low night temperature and high humidity, economic losses seem to be negligible. Abstract
Garlic chives, Allium tuberosum Roth., are widely cultivated in Asia and are the fourth most important Allium crop in Korea. In June 2011, a leaf blight of garlic chives associated with a Septoria spp. was observed on an organic farm in Hongcheon County, Korea. Similar symptoms were also found in fields within Samcheok City and Yangku County of Korea during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Disease incidence (percentage of plants affected) was 5 to 10% in organic farms surveyed. Diseased voucher specimens (n = 5) were deposited at the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). The disease first appeared as yellowish specks on leaves, expanding to cause a leaf tip dieback. Half of the leaves may be diseased within a week, especially during wet weather. Pycnidia were directly observed in leaf lesions. Pycnidia were amphigenous, but mostly epigenous, scattered, dark brown to rusty brown, globose, embedded in host tissue or partly erumpent, separate, unilocular, 50 to 150 μm in diameter, with ostioles of 20 to 40 μm in diameter. Conidia were acicular, straight to sub-straight, truncate at the base, obtuse at the apex, hyaline, aguttulate, 22 to 44 × 1.8 to 3 μm, mostly 3-septate, occasionally 1- or 2-septate. These morphological characteristics matched those of Septoria allii Moesz, which is differentiated from S. alliacea on conidial dimensions (50 to 60 μm long) (1,2). A monoconidial isolate was cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Two isolates have been deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession Nos. KACC46119 and 46688). Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the ITS1/ITS4 primers and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 482-bp was deposited in GenBank (JX531648 and JX531649). ITS sequence information was at least 99% similar to those of many Septoria species, however no information was available for S. allii. Pathogenicity was tested by spraying leaves of three potted young plants with a conidial suspension (2 × 105 conidia/ml), which was harvested from a 4-week-old culture on PDA. Control leaves were sprayed with sterile water. The plants were placed in humid chambers (relative humidity 100%) for the first 48 h. After 7 days, typical leaf blight symptoms started to develop on the leaves of inoculated plants. S. allii was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. The host-parasite association of A. tuberosum and S. allii has been known only from China (1). S. alliacea has been recorded on several species of Allium, e.g. A. cepa, A. chinense, A. fistulosum, and A. tuberosum from Japan (4) and A. cepa from Korea (3). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of S. allii on garlic chives. No diseased plants were observed in commercial fields of garlic chives which involved regular application of fungicides. The disease therefore seems to be limited to organic garlic chive production. Abstract
Abstract
Background: Bevacizumab added to weekly paclitaxel resulted in improved progression free survival (PFS) and objective response rates (ORR) compared to weekly paclitaxel alone. Nab-paclitaxel and the platins are active in MBC. We conducted an efficacy and safety study of carboplatin, nab-paclitaxel and bevacizumab.
Methods: A phase II open label prospective multi-site study enrolled patients (pts) who had measurable MBC according to RECIST 1.1 criteria and no prior chemotherapy for advanced disease. The primary endpoint was PFS with secondary endpoints of overall survival (OS), ORR, and safety. Pts initially received carboplatin AUC 6 day 1, 22,43, plus weekly nab-paclitaxel 100mg/m2 and bevacizumab 15mg/m2 day 1,22,43 of a 56 day cycle. This was later changed to carboplatin AUC 6 day 1, nab-paclitaxel 100mg/m2 day 1,8,15, and bevacizumab 10mg/m2 day 1,15 of a 28 day cycle. Thirty-two pts were required to detect an increase in median PFS from 6.7 to 10.5 mo with 80% power based on a one-sided p = 0.05. Kaplan–Meier analyses estimated PFS and OS. The log rank test was used for the comparison of survival curves between pts with triple negative MBC (TNBC) and pts with non-TNBC.
Results: Thirty-two pts were enrolled between 2/2008 and 11/2011 by 1 academic and 5 community oncology practices. Two pts were ineligible due to non-measurable disease and not included in the response analyses. The median age was 58 years (range 35–81), 22 pts (69%) had an ECOG PS 0, 9 (28%) had a PS 1, 1 (3%) PS 2. Twenty-four (75%) pts had ER+ disease, 7 (22%) had TNBC, 1 (3%) had ER-HER2+ disease not eligible for trastuzumab-based therapy. Metastatic sites were bone (26%), liver (18%), loco-regional (16%), and lung (12%). One pt (3%) had bone and loco-regional disease only, 19 (59%) had visceral dominant disease. The median number of weeks on treatment was 28.9 (range 5–131). The median PFS in all pts was 13.6 months (mo) (95% CI 11.2–21.9), with a median OS of 26.8 mo (95% CI 13.3–41.2). The ORR (2 CR and 18 PR) was 66.7% (CI 47.2–82.7). There also were 6 (20%) unconfirmed PR and 3 (10%) stable disease, resulting in a clinical benefit rate of 96.7% (CI 82.78–99.92). There was no significant difference in PFS (median 13.6 vs 16.1mo, p = 0.37) or OS (median 13.6 vs 26.8mo, p = 0.32) in pts with TNBC versus non-TNBC disease. The most common toxicities of any grade (gr) include neutropenia and thrombocytopenia in 24 pts (75%) each, leukopenia and fatigue in 17 pts (53%) each, anemia in 15 (47%), and neuropathy in 10 (31%). Gr 4 neutropenia was seen in 7 pts (22%) without febrile neutropenia, and gr 4 thrombocytopenia occurred in 6 (19%). There were no pts with gr 4 sensory neuropathy. All pts required chemotherapy dose delays, 15 (47%) had chemotherapy dose reductions.
Conclusions: The carboplatin, nab-paclitaxel and bevacizumab combination is highly effective with good tolerance in first line MBC. As the role of anti-angiogenic therapy in first line metastatic breast cancer is being clarified, this would be an attractive regimen to test in the (neo)adjuvant setting and together with novel molecular targeted agents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dental care forms an important part of the multidisciplinary management of oral cancer patients. The aim of this study was to examine actual and self-perceived knowledge and clinical expertise regarding dental management of oral cancer patients receiving radiation therapy among Western Australian general dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS An invitation to participate in a web-based questionnaire was emailed to 1095 dentists registered with the Australian Dental Association (ADA), WA branch. To assess dentists' knowledge and expertise, actual and perceived knowledge was investigated. Information regarding type of practice, practice location, year of graduation and number of oral cancer patients treated in the preceding 12 months was also obtained. RESULTS One hundred and ninety one dentists responded to the survey. General dentists who took part in the study appeared to possess some knowledge regarding dental management of oral cancer patients treated with radiation therapy. The majority of responders however identified deficiencies in their knowledge and willingness to participate in continuing education programs. CONCLUSION In view of the rising incidence of oral cancer in Western Australia, efforts should be made to provide more clinically relevant training to dentists in this area.

Abstract
Erigeron strigosus Muhl. ex Willd., known as daisy fleabane, is native to North America and was accidently introduced to Korea in the 1990s (2). It is increasingly invasive in natural and managed ecosystems throughout Korea. In June 2011, a leaf spot was first observed on daisy fleabanes growing wild in Hongcheon County of Korea. A voucher specimen was deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS-F25759). Symptoms developed on lower leaves as small, distinct, reddish brown lesions, which enlarged progressively and turned into pale, dull brown spots surrounded by dark purplish-brown margins. Black pycnidia became visible in the lesions. Pycnidia were epigenous, occasionally hypogenous, scattered, dark brown to rusty brown, globose, embedded in host tissue or partly erumpent, 60 to 160 μm in diameter, with ostioles measuring 10 to 30 μm in diameter. Conidia were straight to mildly curved or even flexuous, guttulate, hyaline, 30 to 75 × 1.5 to 2 μm, and one- to seven-septate. Based on the morphological characteristics, the fungus was consistent with Septoria erigerontis Peck (3,4). Conidia were harvested from cirrhi of pycnidia on leaf lesions with a drop of sterile water and then directly streaked onto water agar media using a bacterial loop. Isolates were incubated at 24°C for 48 h. Germinating conidia were individually transferred to potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates. An isolate was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46120). Genomic DNA was extracted using the DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the ITS1/ITS4 primers and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 505 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX480493). A GenBank BLAST search was conducted with the 505-bp sequence showing 100% identity with the sequences of S. erigerontis ex Erigeron annuus (EF535638, GU269862). Pathogenicity was tested by spraying leaves of three potted plants with a conidial suspension (2 × 105 conidia/ml) harvested from a 4-week-old PDA culture. Control leaves were sprayed with sterile distilled water. The plants were placed in a dew chamber at 26°C in darkness and continuous dew for the first 24 h and then moved to a greenhouse bench. After 7 days, leaf spot symptoms identical to those observed in the field developed on the leaves inoculated with the fungus. No symptoms were observed on control plants. S. erigerontis was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. A leaf spot disease of E. strigosus associated with S. erigerontis has been reported in the United States and Canada (1). Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare preferred facial profiles rated by different age groups. An average profile of each gender was constructed from subjects with normal occlusions. Each average profile was located in the centre, and then the lips were protruded or retruded in six 1mm increments in each direction. 70 lay people were divided into 3 groups: young adult (20-39 years); middle-aged (40-54 years); and senior (55-70 years). They were asked to rank their 3 most preferred profiles for each gender. The distribution of the most pleasing profile was compared according to age groups by the Kruskal-Wallis test and according to the rater's gender by the Mann-Whitney U-test. There was a significant difference between the three age groups regarding the preferred male and female profiles (P<0.001). Both the middle-aged and the senior groups tended to select a slightly more retruded lip/flat profile than the young adult group. There was no gender dimorphism in the selection of the preferred profile. The young adult group preferred the straight profile while the middle-aged and senior groups favoured the slightly retruded profile. This may provide useful information for treatment planning in orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate effects of rigor state, thawing temperature, and processing on the physicochemical properties of intact frozen duck breast muscle and homogenates prepared with the frozen-thawed muscles. Prerigor breast muscle was frozen at -25°C and thawed at 4 and 15°C, and the physicochemical properties of duck breast frozen prerigor compared with those in frozen postrigor and 4°C chilled postrigor muscles. The homogenates prepared with duck breast frozen prerigor showed similar physicochemical properties as the frozen-thawed postrigor muscle homogenate. The thawing temperature did not affect the physicochemical properties of homogenates prepared with duck breast muscle frozen prerigor. Also, no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the ultimate pH value and color parameters were observed among the frozen-thawed treatments despite the differences in rigor state and thawing temperature. However, a higher thawing temperature of the intact frozen prerigor muscle resulted in an increase in thawing loss and shear force due to excessive muscle shortening. In this study, the intact duck breast that has undergone thaw-rigor showed main problems associated with thaw-rigor, such as higher thawing loss and shear force, regardless of thawing temperature. However, the processing (grinding and salting) decreased the difference in physicochemical properties due to rigor state before freezing and thawing temperature. Therefore, the frozen-thawed duck breast muscle used to manufacture ground-type meat product may be frozen before rigor onset.

Abstract
We describe anatomical collateral ligament reconstruction using a free tendon graft and intraosseous suture anchors in the digits. Eleven patients who underwent collateral ligament reconstruction at the proximal interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joints were enrolled in this study. Proper and accessory collateral ligaments were reconstructed using a free tendon graft in an anatomical configuration and the grafted tendons were fixed with suture anchors. The mean time from surgery to last follow-up was 9.2 months. All anchors used for fixation of grafted tendons remained securely at their original positions at the last follow-up visits. No significant complications were associated with the use of anchors. Clinical results were excellent in 10 patients and good in one. Anatomical reconstruction of collateral ligaments using suture anchors is simpler, faster, and safer than the conventional bone tunnel technique and it does not have the risks of breakage of bone bridges, skin irritation, or graft loosening.

Abstract
Tatsoi (Brassica narinosa L.H. Bailey), also called spinach mustard or spoon mustard, is cultivated for edible greens in Asia. In Korea, this plant has recently become popular as a sprout vegetable that is grown to harvestable size in 5 to 6 days. During April 2012, tatsoi seedlings showing typical symptoms of downy mildew were found in plastic greenhouses in Pyeongtaek City of Korea. Infection resulted in chlorotic areas on the leaves with a white mildew developing on the abaxial surface, and finally led to necrosis of the lesions. Affected sprouts were unmarketable and abandoned without harvesting. A sample was deposited in the Korea University herbarium (Accession No. KUS-F26445). Microscopic examination of fresh material was performed under a light microscope. Conidiophores emerging from stomata were hyaline, 270 to 550 × 10 to 25 μm, straight, and monopodially branched in six to eight orders. Ultimate branchlets were mostly in pairs, flexuous, and 15 to 25 μm long. Conidia were hyaline, subglobose, and 20.5 to 26.5 × 19.5 to 24.5 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.05 to 1.20. These characteristics unequivocally indicate the genus Hyaloperonospora (1). Previously H. parasitica (formerly under Peronospora) has been considered a causal agent of downy mildew on tatsoi (2,4), but the present Korean accession is morphologically distinct from the former species by possessing subglobose conidia with a low length/width ratio. To confirm this morphological difference, amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of the Korean specimen were performed using procedures outlined by Göker et al. (3). The resulting 874-bp sequence of the region was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX401551). A comparison with the ITS sequences available in the GenBank database revealed that it was identical to Hyaloperonospora brassicae found on Brassica oleracea var. italica (EU137726), and showed only one base pair substitution compared to pathogens from B. rapa ssp. pekinensis (JF975613) and B. napus spp. napus (EU049248), but is significantly different from H. parasitica on Capsella bursa-pastoris (AY210988) with a base-pair dissimilarity of about 13%. Therefore, the pathogen found in Korea was confirmed to be H. brassicae. Pathogenicity was demonstrated by shaking diseased leaves onto the leaves of healthy tatsoi seedlings, incubating the plants in a dew chamber at 20°C for 24 h, and then maintaining them in a greenhouse (22 to 26°C). After 3 days, inoculated plants developed downy mildew symptoms from which identical fungi were observed, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. Control plants treated with sterile water did not develop any symptoms or signs of downy mildew. This is the first report of a downy mildew on tatsoi in Korea, although it has been found in China (2) and Japan (4). Abstract
Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., belonging to the Convolvulaceae, is widely cultivated and used as an industrial resource as well as for food and feed worldwide (2). In September 2010, an unknown leaf blight was observed on leaves in Hoengseong County and Jecheon City in Korea. Symptoms were mostly observed in older leaves as cream to tan-brown lesions surrounded by purplish brown-to-dark brown margin. Each lesion was circular to irregular, not exceeding 10 mm, but coalesced to form larger lesions. Necrotic tissue fell out giving rise to shot-holes. A number of black pycnidia were present in the lesions of diseased leaves. The same symptoms were observed at several localities in Korea during 2010 and 2011 seasons. The voucher specimens (n = 5) were preserved in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Two isolates were obtained from the two samples (KUS-F25274 and KUS-F25361) and deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession Nos. KACC45680 and KACC45702). Pycnidia were amphigenous, but mostly epigenous, scattered, dark brown-to-rusty brown, globose, embedded in host tissue or partly erumpent, 110 to 170 μm in diameter, and with an ostiole of 25 to 40 μm in diameter. Alpha conidia were aseptate, lageniform, biguttulate, hyaline, and 5.5 to 8.0 × 3.5 to 4.5 μm. Beta conidia were absent. Based on the morphological characteristics, the fungus was consistent with Phomopsis ipomoeae-batatas Punith. (1,3). Preliminary identification of the fungal isolate was confirmed by molecular data. Genomic DNA was extracted from the two isolates. The D1/D2 region of 28S rDNA was amplified using the primers LROR and LR7, and sequenced. The resulting sequences of the two isolates were identical to each other, and were deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. JX157848 and JX157849). A BLAST search showed that there was no matching sequence of P. ipomoeae-batatas. Therefore, these were the first 28S sequences for the species submitted to GenBank. The present sequences showed >98% similarity with 24 entries of Phomopsis spp. and Diaporthe spp. (teleomorph of Phomopsis spp.), indicating their close phylogenetic relationship. Pathogenicity was tested by spraying leaves of three potted plants with a conidial suspension (2 × 106 conidia/ml), which was harvested from a 3-week-old culture on potato dextrose agar. Control leaves were sprayed with sterile water. The plants were placed in a dew chamber at 24°C in darkness and continuous dew for the first 24 h and then moved to a greenhouse bench. After 10 days, leaf blight symptoms that were identical to those observed in the field started to develop on the leaves inoculated with the fungus. No symptoms were observed on control plants. P. ipomoeae-batatas was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, confirming Koch's postulates. Occurrence of leaf blight caused by P. ipomoeae-batatas on sweet potato has been reported in many countries (1,3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of the disease in Korea. The economic losses are of minor importance, because the disease is mostly present toward the end of growing season; however, attention must be paid considering that the pathogen may reduce the quality of vines used as fodder. Abstract
A genuine dammarane-glycoside, named as ginsenoside Rs(3), was isolated from the MeOH extracts of Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) through repeated silica gel column chromatographies and its chemical structure was determined as (20S)-protopanaxadiol 3-O-[6''-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside on the basis of several spectral and physical evidences including HMBC and FAB-MS.

Abstract
Sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum L., is a fragrant herb belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Originated in India 5,000 years ago, sweet basil plays a significant role in diverse cuisines across the world, especially in Asian and Italian cooking. In October 2008, hundreds of plants showing symptoms of leaf spot with nearly 100% incidence were found in polyethylene tunnels at an organic farm in Icheon, Korea. Leaf spots were circular to subcircular, water-soaked, dark brown with grayish center, and reached 10 mm or more in diameter. Diseased leaves defoliated prematurely. The damage purportedly due to this disease has reappeared every year with confirmation of the causal agent made again in 2011. A cercosporoid fungus was consistently associated with disease symptoms. Stromata were brown, consisting of brown cells, and 10 to 40 μm in width. Conidiophores were fasciculate (n = 2 to 10), olivaceous brown, paler upwards, straight to mildly curved, not geniculate in shorter ones or one to two times geniculate in longer ones, 40 to 200 μm long, occasionally reaching up to 350 μm long, 3.5 to 6 μm wide, and two- to six-septate. Conidia were hyaline, acicular to cylindric, straight in shorter ones, flexuous to curved in longer ones, truncate to obconically truncate at the base, three- to 16-septate, and 50 to 300 × 3.5 to 4.5 μm. Morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the previous reports of Cercospora guatemalensis A.S. Mull. & Chupp (1,3). Voucher specimens were housed at Korea University herbarium (KUS). An isolate from KUS-F23757 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC43980). Fungal DNA was extracted with DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kits (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 548 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JQ995781). This showed >99% similarity with sequences of many Cercospora species, indicating their close phylogenetic relationship. Isolate of KACC43980 was used in the pathogenicity tests. Hyphal suspensions were prepared by grinding 3-week-old colonies grown on PDA with distilled water using a mortar and pestle. Five plants were inoculated with hyphal suspensions and five plants were sprayed with sterile distilled water. The plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain a relative humidity of 100% for 24 h and then transferred to a 25 ± 2°C greenhouse with a 12-h photoperiod. Typical symptoms of necrotic spots appeared on the inoculated leaves 6 days after inoculation, and were identical to the ones observed in the field. C. guatemalensis was reisolated from symptomatic leaf tissues, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. Previously, the disease was reported in Malawi, India, China, and Japan (2,3), but not in Korea. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. guatemalensis on sweet basil in Korea. Since farming of sweet basil has recently started on a commercial scale in Korea, the disease poses a serious threat to safe production of this herb, especially in organic farming. References: (1) C. Abstract
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Excess accumulation of extracellular matrix and the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition contribute to renal fibrosis, which is associated with DKD. The present study examined whether delayed treatment with human umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells (hUCB-SC) showed a therapeutic effect on DKD progression. Experimental diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ; 50 mg/kg) into 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. Age-matched control rats received an equivalent volume of sodium citrate buffer alone. At 4 weeks after the STZ injection when diabetic renal injury had developed, hUCB-SC were administered (1 × 10(6) cells/rat) through the tail vein. Four weeks after administering the hUCB-SC, rats were sacrificed and we measured indices of DKD, including urinary protein excretion as well as fibronectin, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and E-cadherin mRNA, and protein expression. Diabetic rats developed significantly increased urinary protein excretion and renal hypertrophy compared to those in control rats. Renal expression of fibronectin and α-SMA mRNA, and protein were increased significantly in diabetic rats compared to those in the controls. E-cadherin protein expression in diabetic kidneys decreased significantly. Intravenously administered hUCB-SC effectively reduced proteinuria, renal fibronectin, and α-SMA up-regulation, as well as renal E-cadherin down-regulation in diabetic rats without a significant effect on blood glucose. Engrafted hUCB-SC in diabetic kidneys were confirmed by human DNA PKcs. The results demonstrated that delayed treatment with hUCB-SC attenuated the progression of diabetic renal injury.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the plasma-protein binding of docetaxel in two different formulations, Taxotere and SID530, a new docetaxel formulation with hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD), in human plasma in vitro, using equilibrium dialysis. Unbound docetaxel concentration in the human plasma was determined by LC-MS/MS analysis. SID530 showed a plasma-protein binding profile comparable to that of Taxotere in the clinically relevant concentration range of docetaxel. In both formulations, the unbound fraction of docetaxel increased in a concentration-dependent biphasic manner. The resulting data indicate that the excipient used in SID530, HP-beta-CD, generates similar effects as polysorbate 80 of Taxotere in terms of plasma-protein binding of docetaxel.

Abstract
Tricyrtis macropoda Miq. (syn. T. dilatata Nakai), known as speckled toadlily, is a perennial herb native to China, Japan, and Korea. The plant has been highly praised for its beautiful flowers and rare populations in natural habitats. In September 2006, several dozen plants were heavily damaged by leaf spots and blight in cultivated plantings in the city of Pocheon, Korea. The infections with the same symptoms were repeated every year. In July 2011, the same symptoms were found on T. macropoda in the cities of Gapyeong and Osan, Korea. The leaf lesions began as small, water-soaked, pale greenish to grayish spots, which enlarged to form concentric rings and ultimately coalesced. A number of blackish acervuli were formed in the lesions. Acervuli were mostly epiphyllous, circular to ellipsoid, and 40 to 200 μm in diameter. Setae were two- to three-septate, dark brown at the base, paler upwards, acicular, and up to 100 μm long. Conidia (n = 30) were long obclavate to oblong-elliptical, sometimes fusiform-elliptical, guttulate, hyaline, and 12 to 20 × 4 to 6.5 μm (mean 15.4 × 5.2 μm). These morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the description of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. (2). Voucher specimens (n = 7) were deposited in the Korea University herbarium (KUS). Two isolates, KACC46374 (ex KUS-F25916) and KACC46405 (ex KUS-F26063), were deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection. Fungal DNA was extracted and the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting sequences of 549 bp were deposited in Genbank (Accession Nos. JQ619480 and JQ619481). They showed 100% similarity with a sequence of C. gloeosporioides (EU32619). Isolate KACC46374 was used in a pathogenicity test. Inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 3-week-old cultures on potato dextrose agar. A conidial suspension (2 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto 15 leaves of three plants. Three noninoculated plants served as controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% relative humidity for 24 h and then kept in a greenhouse (22 to 28°C and 70 to 80% RH). After 5 days, typical leaf spot symptoms, identical to the ones observed in the field, started to develop on the leaves of inoculated plants. No symptoms were observed on control plants. C. gloeosporioides was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. An anthracnose associated with C. tricyrtii (Teng) Teng was recorded on T. formosana and T. latifolia in China (3) and on T. formosana in Taiwan (1), respectively, without etiological studies. The morphological features of C. tricyrtii are within the variation of C. gloeosporioides (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of anthracnose of T. macropoda. This report has significance to indigenous plant resource conservation managers and scientists because T. macropoda has been listed as one of the 126 "Rare and Endangered Plants" by the Korea Forest Service since 1991. Abstract
Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser., known as mophead hydrangea, is native to Japan and is used as a potted ornamental or is planted for landscaping in gardens worldwide. In May 2011, powdery mildew occurred on potted mophead hydrangea cv. Emerald plants in polyethylene-film-covered greenhouses in Icheon, Korea. Heavily infected plantings were unmarketable, mainly due to purplish red discoloration and crinkling of leaves. Such powdery mildew symptoms on mophead hydrangea in gardens had been often found in Korea since 2001, and the collections (n = 10) were deposited in the Korea University herbarium (KUS). In all cases, there was no trace of chasmothecia formation. Mycelium was effuse on both sides of leaves, young stems, and flower petals. Appressoria were well developed, lobed, and solitary or in opposite pairs. Conidiophores were cylindrical, 70 to 145 × 7.5 to 10 μm, and composed of three to four cells. Foot-cells of conidiophores were straight to sub-straight, cylindric, short, and mostly less than 30 μm long. Conidia produced singly were ellipsoid to oval, 32 to 50 × 14 to 22 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.7 to 2.8, lacked fibrosin bodies, and showed angular/rectangular wrinkling of outer walls. Germ tubes were produced on the perihilar position of conidia. Primary conidia were apically conical, basally rounded to subtruncate, 32 to 42 × 14 to 18 μm, and thus generally smaller than the secondary conidia. The morphological characteristics are consistent with previous descriptions of Oidium hortensiae Jørst. (3,4). To confirm the identification, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA from KUS-F25514 was amplified with primers ITS5 and P3 and directly sequenced. The resulting sequence of 694 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JQ669944). There was no ITS sequence data known from powdery mildews on Hydrangea. Therefore, this is the first sequence of O. hortensiae submitted to GenBank. Nevertheless, a GenBank BLAST search of this sequence showed >99% similarity with those of Oidium spp. recorded on crassulacean hosts (e.g. GenBank Accession Nos. EU185641 ex Sedum, EU185636 ex Echeveria, and EU185639 ex Dudleya) (2), suggesting their close phylogenetic relationship. Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaves onto leaves of five healthy potted mophead hydrangea cv. Emerald plants. Five noninoculated plants of the same cultivar served as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 22 ± 2°C. Inoculated plants developed signs and symptoms after 6 days, whereas the control plants remained healthy. The fungus present on the inoculated plants was morphologically identical to that originally observed on diseased plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Occurrence of powdery mildew disease on mophead hydrangea is circumglobal (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew disease caused by O. hortensiae on mophead hydrangea in Korea. Abstract
In this study, the pharmacokinetics of 2 forms of mirodenafil, namely the base form and the hydrochloride salt form, were investigated in rats. The 2 forms were orally administered to rats and the plasma concentrations of mirodenafil were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The mirodenafil base and hydrochloride salt forms showed similar pharmacokinetic profiles in terms of their maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC). The time to peak concentration (Tmax) of the base form was slightly greater than that of the salt form, but this difference was not statistically significant. These results suggest that the mirodenafil base and hydrochloride forms are pharmacokinetically equivalent in rats, and thus the base form could be used in various mirodenafil formulations as a substitute for the existing mirodenafil hydrochloride form.
