Abstract
Noise pollution, as it affects human being, has been a recognised problem for decades in the developed countries, but it is still ignored in the developing and underdeveloped countries. Effects of noise on human beings often presents conflicting results because of the variety of factors and variables that can effect and/or interfere with the determination of the actual effects. This is because the response of the people vary place-to-place, situation-to-situation for the same noise level. This subjective response has been quantified by various researchers and indicated with different indices. This paper highlights the research carried out by different scientists across the world on the harmful effects of noise on human being.

Abstract
This paper elucidates the basic approach of determining the path coefficients and its significance in the road traffic noise annoyance. Path model not only outline the direct effect of the traffic noise on the nearby residents but also indicate the indirect effect via other variables. In this study seven variables were considered for determining road traffic noise annoyance. However the same would be equally applicable for other situations like aircraft noise, rail noise, and industry noise with the different variables. At the outset a priori path model was designed and then on the basis of the partial regression coefficient values for the different paths, the revised path model was developed. The standardized partial regression coefficients known as path coefficients, determine the strength of the linkage among variables. Some of the paths in the model were not statistically significant. Revised path models were developed by deleting the insignificant paths whose values were found above 5% level. In the revised path model, thus the direct and indirect effect due to a particular variable causing the road traffic noise annoyance could be observed.

Abstract
A feeding trial was conducted for 60 days to delineate the effect of dietary carbohydrate on the haematology, respiratory burst activity and histology in Labeo rohita juveniles. One hundred and forty four fish (av. wt. 10+/-0.15 g) were randomly distributed into 12 treatment groups with each of two replicates. Twelve semi-purified diets with either 35% or 28% of crude protein were prepared with different amylase concentrations (0, 50, 100 and 150 mgkg(-1)) and starch type (gelatinised, G/non-gelatinised, NG) designated as T1 (NG, 35% CP, 0 mgkg(-1) amylase), T2 (G, 35% CP, 0 mgkg(-1) amylase), T3 (NG, 28% CP, 50 mgkg(-1) amylase), T4 (NG, 35% CP, 50 mgkg(-1) amylase), T5 (G, 28% CP, 50 mgkg(-1) amylase), T6 (G, 35% CP, 50 mgkg(-1) amylase), T7 (NG, 28% CP, 100 mgkg(-1) amylase), T8 (NG, 35% CP, 100 mgkg(-1) amylase), T9 (G, 28% CP, 100 mgkg(-1) amylase), T10 (G, 35% CP, 100 mgkg(-1) amylase), T11 (NG, 28% CP, 150 mgkg(-1) amylase) and T12 (NG, 35% CP, 150 mgkg(-1) amylase). The fish were acclimatised to the experimental conditions for 15 days during which time the control diet was fed. The blood haemoglobin percentage and RBC count was not significantly different (P>0.05) among the various treatments. Highest WBC count, total plasma protein, serum globulin and respiratory burst activity was found at 50 mgkg(-1) dietary amylase supplementation, whereas no variation (P>0.05) was found at 0, 100 and 150 mgkg(-1) dietary amylase supplementation. There was no difference (P>0.05) in the serum albumin and AG ratio among the experimental groups. Feeding either gelatinised or non-gelatinised carbohydrate did not affect the histological structure of the liver, kidney and intestine except in the T4 and T7 groups. The T4 group showed hyperplasia of the intestine and moderate vacuolation in hepatic cells, whereas the T7 group showed hyperplasia of the intestine. Non-gelatinised carbohydrates (46%) along with supplementation with 50 mgkg(-1) amylase stimulated the immune system in L. rohita juveniles. But supplementation of amylase to the gelatinised carbohydrate had no immunostimulating effect.

Abstract
A feeding trial was conducted for 60 days to delineate the effect of dietary ribonucleic acid or chitin on haematological parameters, phagocyte respiratory burst and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila of Labeo rohita juveniles. One hundred and twenty-six (avg. wt. 13.40 +/- 0.17 g) juveniles were randomly distributed in six treatment groups, each one in three replicates. Six isonitrogenous (crude protein: 34.34-35.37%) and isocaloric (414-425 kcal 100 g(-1)) purified diets were prepared with different concentrations of either ribonucleic acid or chitin except the control group, viz., control, T1 (0.1% ribonucleic acid), T2 (0.2% ribonucleic acid), T3 (0.4% ribonucleic acid), T4 (25 mg chitin kg (-1)) and T5 (50 mg chitin kg (-1)). Weight gain %, specific growth rate, feed efficiency ratio, protein efficiency ratio did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) among the experimental groups. Haemoglobin content and total erythrocyte count were observed within the normal range and were not influenced by the dietary immunostimulants. Highest total leukocyte count was found in the T(3) group. The immunomodulatory effects of dietary immunostimulants were studied by using nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assay and serum parameters, namely total protein, albumin, globulin and A/G ratio. The respiratory burst activity (NBT) of blood phagocytes was highest in the T3 group followed by the T2 group, which varied significantly (P < 0.05) from other groups. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher total protein, globulin and lower A/G ratio was observed in the T(3) group. The relative percent survival after challenging with Aeromonas hydrophila was highest in the T3 group, compared to the control group, followed by the T2 group. The results indicate that dietary ribonucleic acid at 0.4% enhances phagocyte respiratory burst and protection of Labeo rohita juveniles to challenge by A. hydrophila.

Abstract
Stress due to claw ablation was tested in Macrobrachium rosenbergii males. Dietary high protein and vitamin C were supplemented for amelioration of stress. We used four different treatments: fed with 25% protein and a normal dose (0.12%) of vitamin C (T(1)); 35% protein and a normal dose (0.12%) of vitamin C (T(2)); 25% protein and a high dose (0.24%) of vitamin C (T(3)); and high protein 35% and a high dose (0.24%) of vitamin C (T(4)) for 30 days. All test prawns (T(1) to T(4)) were subjected to ablation of their second chelate legs after the 15th day of the feeding trial. A control treatment was maintained without claw ablation and fed with 25% protein. Haemolymph glucose, hepatopancreatic glycogen, muscle ascorbate and enzyme activities (glucose 6 phosphatase (G6Pase), fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in hepatopancreas) were tested at different recovery periods (0, 6, 24 h, 7 and 14 days). Results indicate a high glucose level immediately after claw ablation and a concomitant increase in gluconeogenic enzymes (G6Pase and FBPase). However, glycogen reserves were regained in the treatments due to claw ablation stress after 24 h. LDH and ALT activity decreased in the hepatopancreas of M. rosenbergii up to 24 h after claw ablation. Overall results indicate that claw ablation is stressful to M. rosenbergii and high protein and vitamin C diet may mitigate stress due to claw ablation.

Abstract
The present study investigates the possible role of crude turmeric extracts in radioprotection by a variety of methods. Although curcumin, the main bioactive component of turmeric, has been extensively used in such studies, the efficiency of the crude extracts has been poorly investigated. This study revealed that dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of turmeric produces a significant amount of radioprotection, which is very similar in nature and extent to that imparted by curcumin. Field Inversion Gel Electrophoresis (FIGE) studies also clearly showed the protection offered by turmeric extracts against X-ray induced DNA damage of E. coli WP2s(lambda) cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying premature ovarian failure (POF) are largely unknown. Our objective was to develop a working animal model to explore the pathogenesis of POF. Since galactosaemic women eventually develop POF, we evaluated the potential of experimental galactose toxicity as the proposed model. METHODS Pregnant rats were fed pellets supplemented with or without 35% galactose from day 3 of conception continuing through weaning of the litters. Female offspring were evaluated for serum levels of galactose and galactose-1-phosphate, growth rate, onset of puberty, reproductive cyclicity, ovarian complement of follicles, hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian function and follicular response to gonadotrophins. RESULTS Galactose toxicity delayed the onset of puberty and developed a state of hypergonadotrophic hypoestrogenism. The characteristic low FSH levels at weaning followed by pubertal spurts of gonadotrophins and estradiol (E(2)) secretion of the controls was replaced by a sustained high level of FSH and a low level of E(2) under galactose toxicity. The ovary developed with apparently normal or deficient complement of follicles. Ovarian response to exogenous gonadotrophin stimulation was blunted, but the response improved significantly when the stimulation was preceded by pituitary desensitization. CONCLUSION Experimental galactose toxicity may serve as a model for exploring some of the basic tenets of POF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In rats, prenatal exposure to high concentrations of galactose may contribute to a condition that is equivalent to the premature ovarian failure (POF) component of human galactosaemia. We investigated if development of POF under experimental galactosaemia-like conditions was attributed to impaired germ cell migration. METHODS Pregnant rats were fed pellets supplemented with, or without, 35% galactose from day 3 of conception continuing through parturition. Between days 12-15, embryos from one uterine horn were dissected out. Primordial germ cells (PGC) were histochemically localized and counted on the basis of binding of Dolichos biflorus agglutinin, a lectin specific for terminal N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), to the surface glycoconjugate of the germ cells. The embryos from the other uterine horn were maintained until parturition. Liver activity of uridine diphosphate galactose 4-epimerase, the enzyme involved at multiple steps in the process of synthesis of GalNAc, was assayed in 1-2 day old female pups. RESULTS The numbers of PGC at the day-specific sites on all days of examination were significantly lower (P </= 0.0003), and liver epimerase activity was significantly (P = 0.000001) reduced in the galactose-exposed group. CONCLUSION Impaired germ cell migration leading to the development of gonads with deficient initial pools of germ cells may form the causal link between galactosaemia and POF.

Abstract
Despite the fact that many modern drug therapies are based on the concept of enzyme inhibition, inhibition of several enzymes leads to pathological disorders. Clinically used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) bind to the active site of the membrane protein, cyclooxygenase (COX) and inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins, the mediators for causing inflammation. At the same time, inhibition of hepatic cysteine proteases by some NSAID metabolites like NAPQI is implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatotoxicity. As a part of our efforts to develop new effective NSAIDs, a comprehensive investigation starting from synthesis to the study of the final metabolism of acetanilide group of compound has been envisaged with appropriate feedback from kinetic studies to enhance our knowledge and technical competency to feed the know-how to the medicinal chemist to screen out and design new acetanilide derivatives of high potency and low toxicity. Structure-function relationship based on the interaction of acetanilide with its cognate enzyme, cyclooxygenase has been studied critically with adequate comparison with several other available crystal structures of COX-NSAID complexes. Furthermore, to make the receptor based drug design strategy a novel and comprehensive one, both the mechanism of metabolism of acetanilide and structural basis of inhibition of cysteine proteases by the reactive metabolite (NAPQI) formed by cytochrome P450 oxidation of acetanilide have been incorporated in the study. It is hoped that this synergistic approach and the results obtained from such consorted structural investigation at atomic level may guide to dictate synthetic modification with judicious balance between cyclooxygenase inhibition and hepatic cysteine protease inhibition to enhance the potential of such molecular medicine to relieve inflammation on one hand and low hepatic toxicity on the other.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Topical glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) may produce healing of anal fissure by decreasing the high resting anal sphincter pressure in these patients. The present study assessed the efficacy of GTN in chronic anal fissure in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. METHOD Patients with chronic anal fissure (for more than 8 weeks) underwent measurement of maximum anal resting pressure (MARP) before and 12 minutes after application of either 0.2% GTN or placebo ointment in a randomized manner. They then received twice-daily local application of their respective ointment for 6 weeks. Symptoms and healing of fissure were assessed; patients were evaluated at 3 months for evidence of relapse. RESULTS 19 adult patients (12 men) were studied; 10 received GTN and 9 placebo. Mean (SD) MARP decreased from 131.0 (32.3) cm H2O to 93.5 (28.4) cm H2O (p<0.05) with GTN and from 150.5 (36.9) cm H2O to 142.8 (35.0) cm H2O (p=ns) with placebo. Fissure healed in 7 of 10 patients treated with GTN and 2 of 9 patients treated with placebo (p<0.05). There was no relapse of fissure in either group. CONCLUSION Local application of GTN was effective in healing chronic anal fissure.

Abstract
The high resolution crystallographic structure of MCTI-II complexed with beta trypsin (PDB entry 1MCT) was used to model the corresponding structures of the six inhibitor peptides belonging to Cucurbitaceae family (MCTI-I, LA-1, LA-2, CMTI-I, CMTI-III, CMTI-IV). Two model inhibitors, LA-1 and LA-2 were refined by molecular dynamics to estimate the average solution structure. The difference accessible surface area (DASA) study of the inhibitors with and without trypsin revealed the Arginine and other residues of the inhibitors which bind to trypsin. The hydration dynamics study of LA1 and LA2 also confirm the suitability of water molecules at the active Arg site. Moreover, the presence of a unique 3D-structural motif comprises with the four CPRI residues from the amino terminal is thought to be conserved in all the six studied inhibitors, which seems essential for the directional fixation for proper complexation of the Arg (5) residue towards the trypsin S1-binding pocket. The role of the disulphide linkage in the geometrical stabilization of CPRI (Cysteine, Proline, Arginine, Isoleucine) motif has also been envisaged from the comparative higher intra molecular Cys (3) -Cys (20) disulphide dihedral energies.

Abstract
Several trypsin inhibitor peptides (with 28-32 amino acid residues) belonging to the Cucurbitaceae (LA-1, LA-2, MCTI-I, CMTI-I, CMTI-III, CMTI-IV), characterized by a distinctive tertiary fold with three conserved disulphide bonds and with mostly arginine at their active centre, were modelled using the high-resolution X-ray structure of a homologous inhibitor, MCTI-II, isolated from bitter gourd. All the inhibitors were modelled in both their native and complexed state with the trypsin molecule, keeping the active site the same as was observed in the trypsin-MCTI-II complex, by homology modelling using the InsightII program. The minimized energy profile supported the binding constants (binding behaviour) of the inhibitor-trypsin complexes in the solution state. A difference accessible surface area (DASA) study of the trypsin with and without inhibitors revealed the subsites of trypsin where the inhibitors bind. It revealed that the role of mutation of these peptides through evolution is to modulate their inhibitory function depending on the biological need rather than changing the overall structural folding characteristics which are highly conserved. The minor changes of amino acids in the non-conserved regions do not influence significantly the basic conformational and interactional sequences at the trypsin binding subsites during complex formation.

Abstract
Endoscopic sclerotherapy (EST) leads to structural and motility changes in the esophagus; the former are thought to be commoner after EST with absolute alcohol (AA), which is a commonly used sclerosant in India as it is cheap and effective. There are no previous studies on changes in esophageal motility after EST with AA. Accordingly, we studied patients with portal hypertension before (n = 24) and after (n = 22) variceal obliteration by EST with AA using a water perfusion esophageal manometry system. Contraction amplitude in the distal esophagus was reduced in the post-EST group compared with the pre-EST group (63.4 +/- 24.9 vs. 18.2 +/- 14.3 mmHg, p < 0.01). Duration of esophageal contraction in both the proximal and distal esophagus became prolonged in the post-EST compared with the pre-EST group (3.3 +/- 0.8 vs. 5.4 +/- 2.6 and 4.3 +/- 1.1 vs. 6.6 +/- 2.3 s, p < 0.001 for both). Lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure was reduced in the post-EST compared with the pre-EST group, although the difference was not significant statistically. Abnormal contraction waveforms were more frequent in the post-EST group. One patient in the post-EST group had persistent dysphagia in the absence of endoscopically documented stricture at the time of manometric study. This study shows frequent occurrence of esophageal dysmotility after EST with AA; however, esophageal dysmotility after EST was infrequently associated with motor dysphagia.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the aetiologic spectrum of chronic liver disease (CLD) in a tertiary referral center in Eastern India. METHODS A total of 175 patients (cirrhosis 166, chronic hepatitis 9) diagnosed by clinical, biochemical, radiological and histopathological (42 cases) parameters were evaluated for aetiology. Investigations included: HBsAg and anti HCV (third generation) by ELISA. HBeAg and HBV DNA were tested in HBsAg positive patients. HCV RNA was tested in anti-HCV positive patients. Markers for autoimmune and Wilson's disease (anti-nuclear antibody, anti smooth muscle antibody, serum ceruloplasmin, urinary copper and slit lamp examination for KF ring) were done where clinically indicated. RESULTS A total of 62 (35.4%) patients had HBV related CLD and 6 (9.7%) of them had pre-core mutant. HCV was present in 17/114 (14.9%) cases and none had infection with both viruses. Autoimmunity, Wilson's disease and alcohol were the aetiological factors in 5 (2.8%), 5 (2.8%) and 3 (1.7%) patients respectively. No aetilogy could be found in 18/114 (15.8%) patients. CONCLUSIONS It is concluded that HBV is the commonest cause of CLD in Eastern India. Alcohol and HCV are uncommon in this part of the country.

Abstract
The mutagenic and genotoxic effects of two methylxanthines, theophylline (TH) and theobromine (TB), were assessed in the Ames mutagenicity assay (in strains TA97a, TA100, TA102 and TA104) and in vivo sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in bone marrow cells of mice. These are the two most commonly used nervous system stimulators throughout the world. TH is used in the long-term treatment of asthma. Bacterial mutagenicity assay showed very weak mutagenic effects of both drugs in Salmonella strains TA102 and TA104 only in certain concentrations when S9 was added to it. No mutagenic effects were observed in any other strains used in this assay either with or without metabolic activation. But results of in vivo SCE assay indicate that these two drugs can induce significant SCE in bone marrow cells of mice.
