Abstract
While most humans express an alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase in plasma, 9% of individuals on the isle of Java (Indonesia) do not express this enzyme. Ninety-five percent of these plasma alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase-deficient individuals have Lewis negative phenotype on red cells, suggesting strong linkage disequilibrium between these two traits. To define the molecular basis for this plasma deficiency and to determine which of two candidate human alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase genes encode this enzyme (FUT5 and FUT6), we cloned and analyzed alleles at these two loci from an Indonesian individual deficient in plasma alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase activity. Single base pair changes were identified in the coding region of each gene, relative to previously published wild type alleles. These changes in turn yield three codon changes in FUT5 and three in FUT6. The codon changes in the FUT5 gene do not yield detectable diminutions in alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase activity when tested by expression in transfected COS-1 cells, and none of the FUT5 alleles co-segregate with plasma alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase deficiency in Indonesian pedigrees. By contrast, two of the codon changes in the FUT6 alleles inactivate this gene when tested by expression in transfected COS-1 cells. One of these inactivating changes is a missense mutation (Glu-247-->Lys) within the enzyme's catalytic domain. The other inactivating mutation represents a nonsense mutation (Tyr-315-->stop) that truncates the COOH terminus of the enzyme by 45 amino acids. The Glu-247-->Lys missense mutation is present in double dose in the nine plasma alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase-deficient individuals tested, whereas the nonsense mutation at tyrosine 315 is present in double dose in just one of these persons. These results demonstrate that the alpha(1,3)-fucosyltransferase activity in human plasma is encoded by the FUT6 gene and that the missense mutation within codon 247 of this gene is responsible for deficiency of this activity in these Indonesian families.

Abstract
Various neuropsychiatric syndromes in typhoid fever were seen in nine patients of multiple drug resistant (both in vitro and in vivo) Salmonella typhi infection of a total of 270 suspected cases in the last two years. All but one patient received oral norfloxacin (400 mg 12 hourly) for two weeks with complete recovery, while the other patient died. Bacteremia and toxemia seem to be the only common factor responsible for neuropsychiatric complications.

Abstract
In Noorpur Shahan, a village in the outskirts of Islamabad, Bacillus sphaericus was tested to determine its efficacy against mosquito larvae. Since the creation of this new Islamabad district no mosquito control measure has been taken in the area and like so many other places in and around Islamabad, mosquito density is unusually high in this village. The efficacy of Bacillus sphaericus was studied upto seven weeks after its application and it gave good larval control.

Abstract
An investigation was carried out to establish the extent of drug resistance among treated patients. A sample population of patients living in Lahore, Pakistan, which is a high prevalence area for tuberculosis, was studied. The total of 256 culture-positive cases in this study were divided into three groups according to the length of previous treatment. There was no significant difference in the antituberculosis treatment regimens or the drug resistance pattern among the three groups. All the patients had had at least three drugs for more than 6 months, and streptomycin and isoniazid were always included in the regimen. About one-third of the patients showed resistance to one or more drug, with the highest resistance being to streptomycin and INH. Resistance to rifampicin, which was introduced fairly recently in this area, was a little more than 5%, which is an increase from the last report.

Abstract
Acute ischemia was induced in the lower limb of growing dogs by injecting the femoral artery with a suspension of carborundum and ground glass in physiological saline. This resulted in the loss of the cellular pattern and the cartilaginous matrix in the growth cartilage. The production of myofibrillike material was observed only in the growth cartilage as well as in the intertrabecular spaces of metaphysis in the injected leg.

Abstract
This study compared the efficacy and tolerability of two 6-month daily regimens of isoniazid and rifampin in combination with either pyrazinamide or ethambutol (RHZ and RHE regimens) against a standard daily regimen of streptomycin, isoniazid, and ethambutol (SHE regimen) given for 6 months followed by isoniazid and ethambutol for an additional 6 months. Only previously treated sputum positive patients suffering from active pulmonary tuberculosis were entered into the study. Three hundred and fifty-eight patients were admitted to the study and 267 (75%) completed chemotherapy. Eighty-five percent of RHZ-regimen and 82% of RHE-regimen patients achieved sputum culture negativity compared to 55% of patients in SHE regimen. Successfully treated patients were followed up for 18 months, and among these, all 3 treatment regimens showed broadly similar levels of culture negativity at the end of the follow-up period. Final therapeutic outcome was based on sputum culture results obtained throughout the follow-up period, and no statistically significant difference in relapse rate was noticed in the 3 regimens. Severe drug intolerance necessitated discontinuation of therapy in only 2 patients.

Abstract
Recent studies have reported fatal head injuries associated with baby walkers. Skull fractures and hospital admissions are significantly higher for infants who have received head injuries while using a walker. Thirty to 50% of infants regularly placed in walkers experience an accident or injury related to the device. Most injuries are minor cuts, abrasions and contusions. While there are many hazards, no benefits have been documented. The walkers do not help children learn to walk. Options for preventing injury including banning baby walkers, product design regulations, and public education about the risks. An outright ban would be difficult, because walkers are not considered inherently dangerous; they become so when parental supervision is lacking. Although design specifications will decrease some walker-related injuries, they will not prevent severe or fatal head injuries associated with falls down stairs. Public awareness of hazards from baby walkers and discouragement of their use are recommended preventive measures at this time.

Abstract
Twenty immigrants from Mali and West Senegal were treated in Paris. Onchocerciasis was diagnosed by six skin snips using a Holth punch. Ivermectine was given in a single oral dose: ten patients were given 50 mcg/kg, three were given 75 mcg/kg and seven received 100 mcg/kg. No patients had ocular symptoms. The results were as follows: Pruritus disappeared rapidly in 9 out of 11 patients who itched before treatment. The microfilarial load decreased rapidly, especially in cases treated with 75 mcg/kg and 100 mcg/kg as all patients tested on day 60 were negative. Clinical signs of the Mazzotti reaction and ocular reactions were not observed following the treatment. Pruritus was briefly aggravated in only two patients. No cardiovascular, hematological, hepatic or renal toxicity was noted.

Abstract
Drug susceptibility studies on strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from widely different populations of patients and tested by two different techniques indicated that all 55 strains resistant to rifampicin were also resistant to isoniazid, while many strains resistant to isoniazid were found to be susceptible to rifampicin. This observation, which has as yet unknown laboratory and clinical significance, may be particularly useful in management of patients. Further studies are called for to establish this relation.

Abstract
The distribution of phage types was studied among 577 strains of Salmonella typhi from Indonesia. Chemotype, colicinogeny, and tetrathionate reductase activity were also studied for most of these strains. The current phage type formula for Java was determined to be: A, D2, D6, E1a, E2, M1, and 46, but two other large groups of strains were also found, I + IV and degraded Vi+ strains. Significant differences in S. typhi strain distributions were noted between two localities on Java with respect to phage type and tetrathionate reductase activity. Comparisons were made with past phage typing studies in Jakarta as well as with more recent studies in other parts of south-east Asia. Phage types A, D1, D2, and E1 persisted at a rather steady level in Jakarta for 28 years. Evidence was found for epidemiological links to European and Asian areas. Antibiotic resistance among these Indonesian S. typhi strains was rare.

Abstract
The effects of Ambilhar (niridazole or nitrothiazole) on the calcium, magnesium and phosphorus contents of various tissues of rabbits were studied. It results in a decrease in the calcium content of bones, liver and muscles. A similar depletion of the magnesium content of brain, blood, liver and muscles was observed. On the other hand, the urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium was increased. These facts indicate that the drug possibly chelates with these divalent cations. This is supported by the ultra violet spectra of the complexes prepared in vitro. The effect of Ambilhar on tissue phosphorus seems to be indirect. The phorphorus contents of both blood and urine are decreased. This could be due to an increased calcium concentration. These findings may explain the toxic effects of Ambilhar on the nervous system.
