Abstract
Several experimental studies have suggested that diet can alter the production and metabolism of steroids in men. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of unconjugated steroids and steroid glucuronides as well as sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) among normal adult men who were either omnivorous or vegetarians. The participants were white volunteers ranging from 25-35 years of age and the blood samples were taken between 0900 h and 1000 h and between 1600 h and 1700 h for two consecutive days. No significant statistical change was found in plasma dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and estradiol levels. Vegetarian group showed a higher levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) while the free androgen index (FAI; calculated by the ratio testosterone/SHBG) was lower in this group. Although the concentrations of androsterone glucuronide were higher in vegetarian group, the vegetarians had a 25-50% lower level of androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol glucuronide and androstane-3 beta,17 beta-diol glucuronide. Our data further indicate that both, androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol glucuronide and androstane-3 beta,17 beta-diol glucuronide concentrations are significantly correlated with SHBG levels and with the FAI values. The increases in androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol glucuronide and androstane-3 beta,17 beta-diol glucuronide levels in the omnivorous group are probably a consequence of the elevation of the FAI. Our data suggest that in a vegetarian group, less testosterone is available for androgenic action.

Abstract
In a previous study we showed that 1 alpha OH vitamin D3 [1 alpha (OH)3] given to 16 hemodialyzed patients taking Al(OH)3 at a constant dose increased their plasma concentrations of aluminum [Demontis et al. 1986]. In order to choose between 2 possible mechanisms explaining this increase (increased intestinal absorption or decreased tissue storage of aluminum), we gave, in the present study, 1 alpha (OH)3 the same dose (6 micrograms per week) for the same period (4 weeks) to 15 stable hemodialyzed patients after their Al(OH)3 had been discontinued for 6 weeks. Under Al(OH)3 treatment they had a mean plasma aluminum (2.33 +/- 2.36 mumol/l) which was not significantly different from that of the patients in our former study (1.23 +/- 0.25 mumol/l). After Al(OH)3 discontinuation, plasma aluminum (measured by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry) decreased significantly as early as the 2nd week of the control period (1.39 mumol/l). The decrease was maintained at a plateau throughout the 5 weeks of the control period (1.38 mumol/l), the 4 weeks of 1 alpha OH vitamin (vit) D3 administration (1.40 mumol/l) and the 8 weeks of the post 1 alpha (OH)3 period (1.22 mumol/l). Plasma calcium and phosphate concentrations increased significantly with 1 alpha (OH)3 and decreased thereafter whereas plasma PTH concentrations decreased during 1 alpha (OH)2 D3 and increased after its discontinuation suggesting biological activity of 1 alpha (OH)3. Since 1 alpha (OH)3 increases plasma aluminum in hemodialyzed patients only when they are simultaneously taking Al(OH)3, it is suggested that this increase is explained by an increase of intestinal absorption of aluminum and not by a tissue redistribution of aluminum.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a series of merocyanines and the structure-effect relationship as cytotoxic agents for human adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. The cytotoxicity of these compounds in vitro makes them potential anticancer agents. One of these compounds was found active on human and mouse tumor models.

Abstract
Twenty five subjects, chronic alcoholics for more than five years, without any past history or clinical signs of portal hypertension or oedemato-ictero-ascitic decompensation, were examined by laboratory tests reflecting phosphoro-calcium metabolism and by transiliac bone biopsy with histomorphometric examination of nondecalcified bone. The subjects were fairly homogeneous in terms of liver function and liver disease, when present, was only minimal. The phosphoro-calcium parameters were generally normal, but hypomagnesaemia was observed. On the other hand, the histomorphometric study often revealed marked alterations: hyperosteoidosis: raised index of osteoid thickness (IOT) in 15 of the 25 cases, increase in the relative osteoid volume (ROV) in 12 cases and increase in the osteoid area (OA) in 8 cases. The bony trabecular volume (BTV) was only mildly reduced (13 out of 24) and there was increased resorption, reflected by an increase in the area of resorption (AR) seen in 15 cases, associated with a moderate increase in the area of periosteocytic lacunae (APOL). The essential changes consist of hyperosteoidosis with morphological osteomalacia in 60% of cases and reduction of the trabecular volume in 54%. Comparison of the different parameters reveals the following histomorphometric profile: BTV; AR; ROV; OA; IOT; APOL. Thus, histological bone changes occur in chronic alcholics before the appearance of signs of liver failure. These quantitatively minor changes are suggestive deficiency type bone.

Abstract
When freshly-dispersed rat hepatocytes are maintained in primary monolayer cultures, they quickly lose their capacity to synthesize the urea cycle enzyme, carbamoyl-phosphate synthase. The ability to synthesize many other proteins, e.g., serum proteins including albumin, is retained. After an initial recovery period following cell isolation (24-48 h), glucagon is able to restore the ability of cultured hepatocytes to make carbamoyl-phosphate synthase. mRNA encoding the enzyme is about 4-times higher in hepatocytes maintained for 48 h in the presence of glucagon compared to hepatocytes without the hormone, as judged by in vitro translational assays. The level of carbamoyl-phosphate synthase activity expressed in transformed hepatocytes is unique to each hepatoma. Here we show that Morris hepatoma 5123D has retained such expression, and actively synthesizes the enzyme when 5123D cells are placed in monolayer cultures. Unlike normal hepatocytes, however, synthesis continues uninterrupted at a high level whether or not glucagon is present. 5123D has higher levels of translatable carbamoyl-phosphate synthase mRNA than normal liver.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction is usually caused by a thrombus occurring on a significant coronary lesion. A 60-year-old male was admitted with an acute evolving anterior myocardial infarction. Three hours after the beginning of chest pain, the electrocardiogram showed ST-segment elevation in the anterior and lateral leads which persisted despite intravenous nitroglycerin (100 mcg/min). One hour later, an angiogram showed complete obstruction at the origin of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). After intracoronary streptokinase (250,000 units) the LAD opened and a 90% obstruction was seen at its origin. However, an anterior myocardial infarction occurred. One month later, an angiogram showed a slight irregularity at the origin of the LAD. Thus, this case demonstrates that 1) a myocardial infarction may occur with a near normal coronary artery, and 2) a thrombus may occur at the site of a slight coronary irregularity.

Abstract
Many calcium-mediated effects in mammalian cells may be activated by calcium-calmodulin stimulated enzymes. These effects are inhibited by various antidepressant drugs which bind to and inactivate calmodulin. In the current study, calmodulin was identified by affinity chromatography and gel electrophoresis in the cytoplasm of dispersed rat pancreatic acinar cells. Its role in enzyme secretion was assessed by evaluating the effects of various antidepressants drugs on the enzyme secretory process. Chlorpromazine, trifluoperazine, thioridazine, chlorprothixene and amitriptyline inhibited amylase secretion stimulated by carbachol, A-23187, and cholecystokinin-pancreozymin but not that elicited by dibutyryl cyclic AMP secretin or vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). Haloperidol, sulpiride, phenobarbital, and ethanol were without effect on secretagogue-stimulated enzyme release. Only those agents which blocked secretion also inhibited 45Ca release stimulated by carbachol from isotope preloaded cells. The data suggest that calmodulin may have a functional role in pancreatic enzyme secretion.

Abstract
Growth of Serratia marcescens was not inhibited by high concentrations of L-lysine and its structural analogues, L-cancavanine and S-(2-aminoethyl)-L-cysteine (thialysine). This insensitivity was not caused by deficient transport of basic amino acids, unlike in mutant strains of Escherichia coli having the same properties. The tested strains showed a lack of regulation at the aspartate kinase level toward L-lysine and thialysine. The data indicate great intraspecific variability for aspartate kinase regulation in S. marcescens.

Abstract
Myotonic dystrophy is a well known cause of cardiomyopathy. While various cardiac conduction abnormalities have been described in patients with myotonic dystrophy, so far only sporadic cases of Stokes-Adams attacks have been reported. Of 27 patients with this disease various conduction disturbances were detected in 17 (63%), 5 of whom presented with Stokes-Adams attacks and were found to have intracardiac conduction defects. The prognosis in four of the five patients was greatly improved with permanent pacemaker implantation.

Abstract
A new method for producing particles and membranes containing immobilized bacteria is presented. These immobilized bacteria display good stability over time making them well suited for use in a packed-bed reactor. Such a reactor is tested as a function of the different parameters of the system. The results are qualitatively similar to those obtained with purified enzyme reactors, but some discrepancies with the plug-flow model are noted. It is necessary to use a more sophisticated model in order to fit the experimental data.
