Abstract
Fruit development in Lycium ruthenicum Murr. involves a succession of physiological and biochemical changes reflecting the transcriptional modulation of thousands of genes. Although recent studies have investigated the dynamic transcriptomic responses during fruit ripening in L. ruthenicum, most have been limited in scope, and thus systematic data representing the structural genes and transcription factors involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis are lacking. In this study, the transcriptomes of three ripening stages associated with anthocyanin accumulation, including S1 (green ripeness stage), S2 (skin color change) and S3 (complete ripeness stage) in L. ruthenicum were investigated using Illumina sequencing. Of a total of 43,573 assembled unigenes, 12,734 were differentially expressed during fruit ripening in L. ruthenicum. Twenty-five significantly differentially expressed structural genes (including PAL, C4H, 4CL, CHS, CHI, F3H, F3'H, F3'5'H, DFR, ANS and UFGT) were identified that might be associated with anthocyanin biosynthesis. Additionally, several transcription factors, including MYB, bHLH, WD40, NAC, WRKY, bZIP and MADS, were correlated with the structural genes, implying their important interaction with anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes. Our findings provide insight into anthocyanin biosynthesis and regulation patterns in L. ruthenicum and offer a systematic basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms governing anthocyanin biosynthesis in L. ruthenicum.

Abstract
Salinity is one of the major abiotic stress factors that limit plant growth and crop yield worldwide. To understand the molecular mechanisms and screen the key proteins in response of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) to salt, in the present study, the proteomics of roots and shoots in three-week-old sugar beet plants exposed to 50 mM NaCl for 72 h was investigated by isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) technology. The results showed that 105 and 30 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in roots and shoots of salt-treated plants compared with untreated plants, respectively. There were 46 proteins up-regulated and 59 proteins down-regulated in roots; and 13 up-regulated proteins and 17 down-regulated proteins found in shoots, respectively. These DEPs were mainly involved in carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, transcription, translation, protein folding, sorting, and degradation as well as transport. It is worth emphasizing that some novel salt-responsive proteins were identified, such as PFK5, MDH, KAT2, ACAD10, CYP51, F3H, TAL, SRPR, ZOG, V-H+-ATPase, V-H+-PPase, PIPs, TIPs, and tubulin α-2/β-1 chain. qRT-PCR analysis showed that six of the selected proteins, including BvPIP1-4, BvVP and BvVAP in root and BvTAL, BvURO-D1, and BvZOG in shoot, displayed good correlation between the expression levels of protein and mRNA. These novel proteins provide a good starting point for further research into their functions using genetic or other approaches. These findings should significantly improve the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in salt tolerance of sugar beet plants.

Abstract
As G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor (5-HT1AR) and orexin receptor 2 (OX2R) regulate the levels of the cellular downstream molecules. The heterodimers of different GPCRs play important roles in various of neurological diseases. Moreover, 5-HT1AR and OX2R are involved in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases such as depression with deficiency of hippocampus plasticity. However, the direct interaction of the two receptors remains elusive. In the present study, we firstly demonstrated the heterodimer formation of 5-HT1AR and OX2R. Exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac) cAMP bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) biosensor analysis revealed that the expression levels of cellular cAMP significantly increased in HEK293T cells transfected with the two receptors compared with the 5-HT1AR group. Additionally, the cellular level of calcium was upregulated robustly in HEK293T cells co-transfected with 5-HT1AR and OX2R group after agonist treatment. Furthermore, western blotting data showed that 5-HT1AR and OX2R heterodimer decreased the levels of phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB). These results not only unraveled the formation of 5-HT1AR and OX2R heterodimer but also suggested that the heterodimer affected the downstream signaling pathway, which will provide new insights into the function of the two receptors in the brain.

Abstract
Orexin-A elicits multiple potent effects on a variety of tumor cells via
different signaling pathways. However, it is unknown whether it has a
neuroprotective effect on SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. This study
investigated the neuroprotective effect of Orexin-A against hydrogen peroxide
(H2O2)-induced oxidative damage in SH-SY5Y cells and
the underlying mechanism. H2O2 treatment decreased the
viability of SH-SY5Y cells, induced apoptosis, and decreased superoxide
dismutase activity. Orexin-A attenuated these effects, indicating that it
protects SH-SY5Y cells against H2O2-induced oxidative
damage. Pre-treatment with Orexin-A also attenuated
H2O2-induced increases in phosphorylation of
MEK1/2 and ERK1/2. Moreover, these effects of Orexin-A
were reduced in the presence of the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Finally,
pre-treatment with LY294002 abrogated attenuation of the
H2O2-induced decrease in cell viability and increase
in caspase-3/7 activity by Orexin-A. These results show that the
PI3K/MEK1/2/ERK1/2 signaling pathway is involved in
the neuroprotective effects of Orexin-A against
H2O2-induced oxidative damage in SH-SY5Y cells. Our
findings provide insight into the neuroprotective effects of Orexin-A and the
underlying mechanism, which will be useful for the treatment of nervous system
diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aedes albopictus is among the 100 most invasive species worldwide and poses a major risk to public health. Photoperiodic diapause provides a crucial ecological basis for the adaptation of this species to adverse environments. Ae. albopictus is the vital vector transmitting dengue virus in Guangzhou, but its diapause activities herein remain obscure. METHODS In the laboratory, yeast powder and food slurry were compared for a proper diapause determination method, and the critical photoperiod (CPP) was tested at illumination times of 11, 11.5, 12, 12.5, 13, and 13.5 h. A 4-parameter logistic (4PL) regression model was selected to estimate the CPP. In the field, the seasonal dynamics of the Ae. albopictus population, egg diapause, and hatching of overwintering eggs were investigated monthly, weekly, and daily, respectively. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to assess the associations of diapause with meteorological factors. RESULTS In the laboratory, both the wild population and the Foshan strain of Ae. albopictus were induced to diapause at an incidence greater than 80%, and no significant difference (P > 0.1) was observed between the two methods for identifying diapause. The CPP of this population was estimated to be 12.312 h of light. In the field, all of the indexes of the wild population were at the lowest levels from December to February, and the Route Index was the first to increase in March. Diapause incidence displayed pronounced seasonal dynamics. It was estimated that the day lengths of 12.111 h at week2016, 43 and 12.373 h at week2017, 41 contributed to diapause in 50% of the eggs. Day length was estimated to be the main meteorological factor related to diapause. CONCLUSIONS Photoperiodic diapause of Ae. albopictus in Guangzhou of China was confirmed and comprehensively elucidated in both the laboratory and the field. Diapause eggs are the main form for overwintering and begin to hatch in large quantities in March in Guangzhou. Furthermore, this study also established an optimized investigation system and statistical models for the study of Ae. albopictus diapause. These findings will contribute to the prevention and control of Ae. albopictus and mosquito-borne diseases.

Abstract
Nodal-line semimetals are topological semimetals in which band touchings form nodal lines or rings. Around a loop that encloses a nodal line, an electron can accumulate a nontrivial π Berry phase, so the phase shift in the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation may give a transport signature for the nodal-line semimetals. However, different experiments have reported contradictory phase shifts, in particular, in the WHM nodal-line semimetals (W=Zr/Hf, H=Si/Ge, M=S/Se/Te). For a generic model of nodal-line semimetals, we present a systematic calculation for the SdH oscillation of resistivity under a magnetic field normal to the nodal-line plane. From the analytical result of the resistivity, we extract general rules to determine the phase shifts for arbitrary cases and apply them to ZrSiS and Cu_{3}PdN systems. Depending on the magnetic field directions, carrier types, and cross sections of the Fermi surface, the phase shift shows rich results, quite different from those for normal electrons and Weyl fermions. Our results may help explore transport signatures of topological nodal-line semimetals and can be generalized to other topological phases of matter.

Abstract
miRNAs regulate a variety of biological processes through pairing-based regulation of gene expression at the 3′ end of the noncoding region of the target miRNA. miRNAs were found to be abnormally expressed in ischemia/reperfusion injury models. High-throughput sequencing is a recently developed method for sequencing miRNAs and has been widely used in the analysis of miRNAs. In this study, ischemia/reperfusion injury models were intracerebroventricularly injected with 50 μg/kg apelin-13. High-throughput sequencing showed that 357 known miRNAs were differentially expressed among rat models, among which 78 changed to > 2-fold or < 0.5-fold. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was selected to confirm the expression levels of four miRNAs that were differentially expressed, the results of which were consistent with the results of high-throughput sequencing. Gene Ontology analysis revealed that the predicted targets of the different miRNAs are particularly associated with cellular process, metabolic process, single-organism process, cell, and binding. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genome analysis showed that the target genes are involved in metabolic pathways, mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway, calcium signaling pathway, and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway. Our findings suggest that differentially expressed miRNAs and their target genes play an important role in ischemia/reperfusion injury and neuroprotection by apelin-13.

Abstract
Orexin-A is a neuropeptide with potent neuroprotective activity towards cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, but few studies have attempted to elucidate the mechanism. Herein, we performed global gene expression profiling of the hippocampus following reperfusion with Orexin-A using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). RNA-seq identified 649 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the Orexin-A group compared with saline controls (I/R group), of which 149 were up-regulated and 500 were down-regulated. DEGs were confirmed using qRT-PCR, their molecular functions, biological processes and molecular components were explored using Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and 206 KEGG pathways were associated with Orexin-A treatment. MAPK, chemokine and calcium signalling pathways were mainly responsible for the neuroprotective effects of Orexin-A. Hspb1, Igf2 and Ptk2b were selected for functional interaction analysis by GeneMANIA. The results suggest that Orexin-A modifies gene expression in the hippocampus, leading to neuroprotection from I/R injury. The study provides a basis for future elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying Orexin-A.

Abstract
Aims/Introduction There has been considerable professional debate on the association between age at menopause and diabetes risk, while the findings are controversial. The present study explored the association between late menopause and the prevalence of diabetes in the Chinese population. Material and Methods The data were part of the baseline survey of China Kadoorie Biobank from Zhejiang Province. A total of 17,076 postmenopausal women were included in the present study. Logistic regression models were used to calculate the adjusted odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. Results Of the participating women, 1,288 (7.54%) had type 2 diabetes. In comparison with those with menopause at 46–52 years, women with menopause at a later age (≥53 years) were 1.21‐fold (95% confidence interval 1.03–1.43) more likely to have diabetes. Conclusions The present findings suggested that later age at menopause was associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous study suggests changes in circRNAs in tumor tissues from cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) patients. However, little is known about the diagnostic value of circRNAs in CSCC. To assess the potential application of circRNAs as diagnostic tools in CSCC, the circulating circRNAs in peripheral whole blood were carried out. METHODS Five up-regulated circRNAs in peripheral whole blood from 87 patients with CSCC and 55 healthy controls were first identified by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The diagnostic value was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curves (AUC). RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, hsa_circ_0101996, hsa_circ_0104649, hsa_circ_0104443 and hsa_circ_0101119 expression were significantly up-regulated in peripheral whole blood from CSCC patients. ROC analysis showed that hsa_circ_0101996 and hsa_circ_0101119 could distinguish CSCC patients from healthy controls with high AUC (0.906 and 0.887, respectively). Intriguingly, the combination of hsa_circ_0101996 and hsa_circ_0101119 markedly improved AUC (0.964). CONCLUSION All of the findings suggest that hsa_circ_0101996 combined with hsa_circ_0101119 can serve as potential biomarkers for CSCC detection.

Abstract
The quantum Hall effect is usually observed in 2D systems. We show that the Fermi arcs can give rise to a distinctive 3D quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals. Because of the topological constraint, the Fermi arc at a single surface has an open Fermi surface, which cannot host the quantum Hall effect. Via a "wormhole" tunneling assisted by the Weyl nodes, the Fermi arcs at opposite surfaces can form a complete Fermi loop and support the quantum Hall effect. The edge states of the Fermi arcs show a unique 3D distribution, giving an example of (d-2)-dimensional boundary states. This is distinctly different from the surface-state quantum Hall effect from a single surface of topological insulator. As the Fermi energy sweeps through the Weyl nodes, the sheet Hall conductivity evolves from the 1/B dependence to quantized plateaus at the Weyl nodes. This behavior can be realized by tuning gate voltages in a slab of topological semimetal, such as the TaAs family, Cd_{3}As_{2}, or Na_{3}Bi. This work will be instructive not only for searching transport signatures of the Fermi arcs but also for exploring novel electron gases in other topological phases of matter.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) in Tongxiang, Zhejiang province, and analyze the interaction between smoking and indoor air pollution on COPD. Methods: Townships of Chongfu, Zhouquan, Gaoqiao, Shimen, Wuzhen were randomly selected from Tongxiang. All the local people aged 30-79 years were asked to receive questionnaire survey, physical examination and pulmonary function testing. FEV1max/FVC max≤0.7 was the criterion of COPD diagnosis. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between smoking/indoor air pollution and COPD, multiplied interaction between smoking and indoor air pollution was evaluated, Excel table prepared by Andersson et al. was used to calculate the adding interaction. Results: The overall prevalence of COPD was 6.6%, and adjusted for age, educational level, occupation, marriage, income level, BMI, waist-to-hip and other factors, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that males who had quit smoking, started smoking at age of <25 years had a high risk of COPD; females who smoked every day <15 g, inhaled smoke into mouth or throat had high risk of COPD. Interaction analysis showed that using fuel of firewood/charcoal/coal, briquettes for cooking and regular smoking had multiplied interaction on COPD. Use no chimney or exhaust system in cooking and regular smoking had adding interaction in females. Conclusion: The prevalence of COPD in Tongxiang was close to the national average level. Female smokers had higher risk for COPD than male smokers. Improving kitchen ventilation, using natural gas or fuel gas for cooking and active tobacco control would facilitate the prevention of COPD.

Abstract
Background Schisandra, a globally distributed plant, has been widely applied for the treatment of diseases such as hyperlipidemia, fatty liver and obesity in China. In the present work, a rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadruple-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RRLC-Q-TOF-MS)-based metabolomics was conducted to investigate the intervention effect of Schisandra chinensis lignans (SCL) on hyperlipidemia mice induced by high-fat diet (HFD). Methods Hyperlipidemia mice were orally administered with SCL (100 mg/kg) once a day for 4 weeks. Serum biochemistry assay of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) was conducted to confirm the treatment of SCL on lipid regulation. Metabolomics analysis on serum samples was carried out, and principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were carried out for the pattern recognition and characteristic metabolites identification. The relative levels of critical regulatory factors of liver lipid metabolism, sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) and its related gene expressions were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for investigating the underlying mechanism. Results Oral administration of SCL significantly decreased the serum levels of TC, TG and LDL-c and increased the serum level of HDL-c in the hyperlipidemia mice, and no effect of SCL on blood lipid levels was observed in control mice. Serum samples were scattered in the PCA scores plots in response to the control, HFD and SCL group. Totally, thirteen biomarkers were identified and nine of them were recovered to the normal levels after SCL treatment. Based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways analysis, the anti-hyperlipidemia mechanisms of SCL may be involved in the following metabolic pathways: tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, synthesis of ketone body and cholesterol, choline metabolism and fatty acid metabolism. Meanwhile, SCL significantly inhibited the mRNA expression level of hepatic lipogenesis genes such as SREBP-1c, fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and decreased the mRNA expression of liver X receptor α (LXRα). Moreover, SCL also significantly decreased the expression level of SREBP-2 and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) in the liver of hyperlipidemia mice. Conclusion Anti-hyperlipidemia effect of SCL was confirmed by both serum biochemistry and metabolomics analysis. The mechanism may be related to the down-regulation of LXRα/SREBP-1c/FAS/ACC and SREBP2/HMGCR signaling pathways.

Abstract
Our previous high-throughput sequencing indicated that rno-miR-1298 was down-regulated in ischemia-reperfusion model of rat. However, little is known about the function and molecular mechanism of rno-miR-1298 in rat tumor cell. In this study, rno-miR-1298 was detected to be significantly down-regulated in rat tumor C6 cells. Moreover, overexpression of rno-miR-1298 obviously inhibited the proliferation and induced apoptosis in C6 cells. SET domain containing 7 (SETD 7) was identified to be a target of rno-miR-1298 using bioinformatics and luciferase reporter assays. Overexpression of rno-miR-1298 markedly reduced the expression of SETD 7 at protein level. Knockdown of SETD 7 also suppressed proliferation and promoted apoptosis in C6 cells. It was indicated that rno-miR-1298 affected cell proliferation and apoptosis of rat tumor cells by targeting SETD 7. Thus, the newly identified miR-1298/SETD 7 expands the elaboration of the mechanisms of the development and progression of tumors and may provide therapeutic target for tumors of nervous system.

Abstract
AIM The aims of this study are to investigate the effects of neurotransmitters NPY and CGRP on ERK signaling in fracture healing, and to identify the correlation between macrophage aggregation and fracture healing. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to build a fracture model. The neurotransmitter receptor inhibitors were injected intraperitoneally into the rats. Immunofluorescence staining and ELISA were employed to determine the expression of NPY and CGRP in fracture area and the peripheral blood, respectively. Micro-CT together with histological staining were utilized to assess the fracture healing conditions. Relative protein expression was determined using western blot. Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the aggregation of macrophages in the injury area. RESULTS During fracture healing, the serum NPY and CGRP significantly increased. The levels of NPY and CGRP reached a peak in the 8th week and reduced significantly thereafter. NPY and CGRP inhibitors could inhibit fracture healing and down-regulate the phosphorylated ERK. Macrophages (NPY+ and CGRP+) aggregated in the injury area. CONCLUSION NPY and CGRP participated in fracture healing, in which they were also shown to influence phosphorylated ERK expression. In addition, macrophages are involved in the fracture healing process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the significance of filtration fraction (FF) and renal artery stenting in the treatment of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis. METHODS In the study, 42 cases of renal artery stenosis were treated with 52 renal artery stent implantation. Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty and stent (PTRAS) of the patients' health side kidney, ipsilateral kidney (renal) glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal effective renal plasma flow effective renal plasma flow (ERPF), kidney filtration fraction changes of preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine (SCR) and the changes in the patients with blood pressure (SBP) and the changes after taking antihypertensive drugs were observed and analyzed. RESULTS The 52 cases of renal artery stent implantation were all successful. Preoperative ipsilateral GFR was significantly lower than that of normal side (t=-3.989, P=0.000); preoperative ipsilateral ERPF was significantly lower than the contralateral side (t=-4.926, P=0.000). On both sides, the overall FF values were equal (t=1.273, P=0.207). Postoperative ipsilateral renal GFR was increased, but there was no statistical difference (t=-1.411, P=0.164). Postoperative ipsilateral renal ERPF was increased significantly (t=-4.954, P=0.000), and FF lower (closer to the normal value (t=3.274, P=0.002). Postoperative side GFR was significantly reduced (t=2.569, P=0.000), the contralateral ERPF was significantly reduced (t=3.889, P=0.001), and FF had no significant change (t=-0.758, P=0.454). Postoperative side GFR was lower than that of the contralateral (t=-3.283, P=0.002) and postoperative side ERPF was still lower than that of the contralateral (t=-3.351, P=0.001), but on both sides, the FF values were equal (t=-0.361, P=0.719). Preoperative FF was relatively normal in the patients with kidney, and the postoperative FF value change was small (t=0.799, P=0.430); preoperative FF was significantly higher in the patients with kidney, and the postoperative FF value was lower than the preoperative (normal value, t=5.299, P=0.000). Postoperative overall serum creatinine was significantly decreased (t=2.505, P=0.016); but for the patients with unilateral renal artery stenosis, the changes in serum creatinine had no statistical difference (t=1.228, P=0.299); and for the patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis and serum creatinine compared with the preoperative, the changes were decreased significantly (t=2.518, P=0.030); postoperative blood pressure (SBP) was significantly decreased compared with that before operation (t=8.945, P=0.000); antihypertensive drugs taken were decreased significantly compared with the preoperative (t=5.280, P=0.000). CONCLUSION For the patients with renal artery stenosis, FF is a useful index to understand the pathophysiological process of renal ischemia. Whether preoperative FF is significantly increased or FF is relatively normal, should be regarded as the indications of renal artery stent implantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of neglecting superficial femoral artery (SFA) recanalization for chronic lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO). METHODS Thirty-six cases treated for severe stenosis or occlusion of superficial femoral artery resulted from ASO were randomly divided into 2 groups. Twenty of them were treated by endovascular reconstruction of superficial femoral artery and the other 16 cases were not treated with their superficial femoral artery, but were only treated with the accompanied iliac and/or profunda femoral artery lesion. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the two groups on mean age, gender, ABI before treatment, accompanied diseases, Rutherford classification and trans-atlantic inter-society consensus (TASC) classification (P>0.05).One week after operation, the reconstruction group had better marked effect and total effective rate [75.0% vs.12.5%(P<0.001); 90.0% vs. 37.5%(P=0.001)] and lower no effective rate [10.0% vs. 62.5%(P=0.001)], There was no significant difference between the two groups on effective rate [15.0% vs. 25.0%(P=0.675)]. The deteriorate cases in both groups were zero, and there was no morbidity of complications and death in both groups during the perioperative period. In the 3-month follow up, the reconstruction group had a better marked effect rate [65.0% vs.25.0%(P=0.017)];There was no significant difference between the two groups on the effective rate, no effective rate and total effective rate [20.0% vs.43.8%(P=0.124); 15.0% vs.31.3%(P=0.422); 85.0% vs.68.8%(P=0.422)]. The deteriorate cases and morbidity of complications and death in both groups during the perioperative period were still zero. In the 6- and 12-month follow ups, there were no significant differences between the two groups on marked effect and total effective rate [60.0% vs.37.5%(P=0.180), 80.0% vs.87.5%(P=0.672); 60.0% vs.43.8%(P=0.332), 85.0% vs.87.5% (P=1.000)]. The deteriorate case was zero in both groups, and there was no morbidity of complications and death in both groups. The limb salvage rate in both groups was 100% during the whole follow up period. The reconstruction group had a higher cost[(53 367.4±24 518.3) yuan vs.(30 397.5±15 354.4) yuan(P=0.011)]. There were 8 cases of SFA restenosis/ reocclusion during the follow up,three of which accepted another endovascular treatment, and the reoperation rate was 15.0%. while in the nonreconstruction group, there was no case that needed another endovascular therapy, and the reoperation rate was zero. CONCLUSION Only dealing with accompanied iliac and profunda artery lesion and neglecting superficial femoral artery reconstruction is a safe, effective and inexpensive therapy for chronic lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans, and should be the preferred alternative for some patients.

Abstract
Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1), an endogenously produced polypeptide, is the ligand of cardiomyocyte ErbB receptors, with cardiovascular protective effects. In the present study, we explored whether the cardioprotective effect of NRG-1 against I/R injury is mediated by inhibiting myocardial endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. In vitro, NRG-1 directly inhibited the upregulation of ER stress markers such as glucose-regulated protein 78, CCAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein and cleaved caspase-12 induced by the ER stress inducers tunicamycin or dithiothreitol in both neonatal and adult ventricular myocytes. Attenuating ErbB signals by an ErbB inhibitor AG1478 or ErbB4 knockdown and preincubation with phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitors all reversed the effect of NRG-1 inhibiting ER stress in cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. Concurrently, cardiomyocyte ER stress and apoptosis induced by hypoxia-reoxygenation were decreased by NRG-1 treatment in vitro. Furthermore, in an in vivo rat model of myocardium ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), intravenous NRG-1 administration significantly decreased ER stress and myocardial infarct size induced by I/R. NRG-1 could protect the heart against I/R injury by inhibiting myocardial ER stress, which might be mediated by the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt signaling pathway.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the association between sleep duration, snoring and diabetes according to gender and menopausal status in rural China. METHODS The data were part of the baseline survey of China Kadoorie Biobank, from a rural county in the south-east costal Zhejiang province. Participants including 24,027 men and 33,677 women aged 30-79 years were enrolled during 2004-2008. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for diabetes. RESULTS Sleep duration was shown to have a U-shaped association with diabetes in women, in particular in postmenopausal women after adjustment for potential confounders. Compared with 7-h sleepers, ORs (95 % CIs) of sleep duration ≤5 and ≥10 h for diabetes were 1.32 (1.02-1.69) and 1.30 (1.03-1.65), respectively, in postmenopausal women (P for quadratic trend = 0.016). However, this U-shaped association was not obvious in men and premenopausal women. Frequently snoring was positively associated with diabetes in all participants. However, this association was not independent of socioeconomic status, health behaviors, obesity and chronic diseases. With increasing sleep duration, the proportion of frequently snoring increased in all participants (P trend <0.05). Postmenopausal women had 23 % (95 % CI 6-44 %) higher odds of diabetes compared with premenopausal women, and the duration of menopause had cumulative effects on diabetes. CONCLUSIONS Short and long sleep durations were significantly associated with diabetes in postmenopausal women, independent of potential confounders. The proportion of frequently snoring had linear trend with sleep duration. Postmenopausal status and the duration of menopause increased the odds of diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We performed a comprehensive review and meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic values of serum single and multiplex tumor-associated autoantibodies (TAAbs) in patients with lung cancer (LC). METHODS We searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for relevant studies investigating serum TAAbs for the diagnosis of LC. The primary outcomes included sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the test. RESULTS The systematic review and meta-analysis included 31 articles with single autoantibody and 39 with multiplex autoantibodies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was the most common detection method. For the diagnosis of patients with all stages and early-stage LC, different single or combinations of TAAbs demonstrated different diagnostic values. Although individual TAAbs showed low diagnostic sensitivity, the combination of multiplex autoantibodies offered relatively high sensitivity. For the meta-analysis of a same panel of autoantibodies in patients at all stages of LC, the pooled results of the panel of 6 TAAbs (p53, NY-ESO-1, CAGE, GBU4-5, Annexin 1 and SOX2) were: sensitivity 38% (95% CI 0.35-0.40), specificity 89% (95% CI 0.86-0.91), diagnostic accuracy 65.9% (range 62.5-81.8%), AUC 0.52 (0.48-0.57), while the summary estimates of 7 TAAbs (p53, CAGE, NY-ESO-1, GBU4-5, SOX2, MAGE A4 and Hu-D) were: sensitivity 47% (95% CI 0.34-0.60), specificity 90% (95% CI 0.89-0.92), diagnostic accuracy 78.4% (range 67.5-88.8%), AUC 0.90 (0.87-0.93). For the meta-analysis of the same panel of autoantibodies in patients at early-stage of LC, the sensitivities of both panels of 7 TAAbs and 6 TAAbs were 40% and 29.7%, while their specificities were 91% and 87%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Serum single or combinations of multiplex autoantibodies can be used as a tool for the diagnosis of LC patients at all stages or early-stage, but the combination of multiplex autoantibodies shows a higher detection capacity; the diagnostic value of the panel of 7 TAAbs is higher than the panel of 6 TAAbs, which may be used as potential biomarkers for the early detection of LC.

Abstract
Objective: To study changes in expression of claudin-11 and proteins related to mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, as well as the ultrastructure of the blood testis barrier (BTB), in male ICR mice exposed to decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209). Methods: Fifty-two mice, 4 weeks of age, weighing 15-21 g, were provided with adaptive feeding for 1 week. Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups, named control, low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose groups. The treated groups received BDE-209, by intragastric gavage, at doses, respectively, of 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg. Mice were sacrificed after 6 weeks and organs harvested on ice, weighed and stored at -80 °C. The ultrastructure of testicular tissues was examined by electron microscopy. Western blotting was used to detect proteins related to the MAPK pathway, including p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38), phosphorylated p38 (p-p38), extracellular regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) , phosphorylated ERK1/2 (p-ERK1/2) , c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), phosphorylated JNK (p-JNK) and the BTB tight junction protein claudin-11. Analyze the difference between each groups. Results: At sacrifice, the body weights in each treated group were compared with those in the control group weighing (41.14 ± 0.60) g. Compared with controls, body weights were significantly different (P<0.05) in the middle dose, at (39.97 ± 0.66) g and high dose, at (39.98± 0.55) g in control group. The coefficients of the testis were significantly lower (P<0.05) in each treated group than in controls, with values of (0.37±0.0)%, (0.31±0.05)% and (0.31±0.04)% for low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose groups, respectively. The epidymus coefficient values were also significantly lower than controls (P<0.05), with values of (0.16±0.06)%, (0.11±0.05)% and (0.07±0.03)%, respectively in the same three dose groups. Electron microscopy ultrastructure showed that, compared with the control group, the testes in the middle and high dose groups had closely connected fractures, cell edema and more vacuoles. Compared with in the control group, levels of p-p38 and p-JNK in testicular tissue were significantly increased (P<0.05). In the control group and in low-, medium- and high-dose groups, the p-p38/p38 ratios were 1.35±0.13, 3.46±0.10, 5.71±0.26 and 4.79±0.21, respectively. The corresponding p-JNK/JNK ratios were 2.07±0.0, 4.77±0.18, 3.63±0.06 and 4.85±0.15. Claudin-11 levels were significantly lower (P<0.05) than control values in each dosed group. The corresponding values in control, low-dose, medium-dose and high-dose groups were 8.33±0.36, 2.06±0.27, 3.37±0.27 and 1.55±0.19, respectively. Conclusion: BDE-209 increased expression of proteins in the MAPK pathway and decreased expression of the BTB tight junction protein claudin-11 in testicular tissue. It also caused ultrastructural damage to the Sertoli cell BTB tight junctions. This suggested that BDE-209 might damage Sertoli cells BTB through effects on the MAPK pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatoprotective effects of Chinese herbal medicine Schisandra Chinensis (Schisandra) have been widely investigated. However, most studies were focused on its lignan extracts. We investigated the effects of Schisandra polysaccharide (SCP) in a mouse model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and studied its effect on sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) and the related genes. METHODS The mouse model of NAFLD was established by feeding mice with a high-fat diet for 16 weeks. Effect of SCP-treatment (100 mg/kg, once daily for 12 weeks) on biochemical parameters and liver histopathology was assessed. Relative levels of sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) and their gene expressions were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western Blot. RESULTS SCP significantly reduced the liver index by 12.0%. Serum levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase were decreased by 31.3, 28.3, 42.8, 20.1 and 15.5%, respectively. Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased by 26.9%. Further, SCP lowered hepatic TC and TG content by 27.0% and 28.3%, respectively, and alleviated fatty degeneration and necrosis of liver cells. A significant downregulation of mRNA and protein expressions of hepatic lipogenesis genes, SREBP-1c, fatty acid synthase and acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and the mRNA expression of liver X receptor α (LXRα) was observed in NAFLD mice treated with SCP. SCP also significantly reduced the hepatic expression of SREBP-2 and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR). CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate the hepatoprotective effects of SCP in a mouse model of NAFLD; the effects may be mediated via downregulation of LXRα/SREBP-1c/FAS/ACC and SREBP-2/HMGCR signaling pathways in the liver.
