Abstract
We study the heat conduction of two nonlinear lattices joined by a weak harmonic link. When the system reaches a steady state, the heat conduction of the system is decided by the tunneling heat flow through the weak link. We present an analytical analysis by the combination of the self-consistent phonon theory and the heat tunneling transport formalism, and then the tunneling heat flow can be obtained. Moreover, the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are performed and the simulations results are consistent with the analytical predictions.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DC) are potent antigen-presenting cells that play an important role in inducing primary antigen-specific immune responses. However, some viruses have evolved to specifically target DC to circumvent the host's immune responses for their persistence in the host. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causes a persistent infection in susceptible animals. Although it is generally believed that the existence of PRRSV quasispecies is partly responsible for the virus persistence, other mechanisms of immune evasion or immune suppression may also exist. Here, we studied the role of DC in PRRSV persistence and immune suppression. Our results showed that PRRSV underwent a productive replication in pig monocyte-derived DC (Mo-DC) as measured by both immunofluorescence staining of viral nucleocapsid protein and virus titration assays, leading to cell death via both apoptosis and necrosis mechanisms. Additionally, PRRSV infection of Mo-DC resulted in reduced expression of MHC class I, MHC class II, CD14 and CD11b/c. This was in agreement with the impaired mixed lymphocyte reaction of PRRSV-infected Mo-DC compared to that of mock-infected Mo-DC. We also examined the cytokine profiles of PRRSV-infected Mo-DC using a quantitative ELISA method. Results indicated that no apparent change in the levels of IL-10, IL-12 and IFN-gamma was detected. Taken together, our data demonstrate that PRRSV productively infects Mo-DC and impairs the normal antigen presentation ability of Mo-DC by inducing cell death, down-regulating the expression of MHC class I, MHC class II, CD11b/c and CD14 and by inducing minimal Th1 cytokines.

Abstract
Although heat-stable (ST) and heat-labile (LT) enterotoxins produced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) have been documented as important factors associated with diarrheal diseases, investigations assessing the contributions of individual enterotoxins to the pathogenesis of E. coli infection have been limited. To address the individual roles of enterotoxins in the diarrheal disease caused by K88-positive ETEC in young pigs, enterotoxin-positive and -negative isogenic E. coli strains were constructed by using pBR322 to clone and express LT and STb. Four strains, K88+ astA, K88+ astA/pBR322, K88+ astA STb+, and K88+ astA LT+, were constructed and subsequently included in gnotobiotic piglet challenge studies, and their pathogenesis was assessed. The results indicated that all K88+ isogenic strains were able to colonize the small intestines of piglets exhibiting the K88 receptor. However, only LT- and STb-positive strains caused appreciable diarrhea. Piglets inoculated with the K88+ astA LT+ strain became dehydrated within 18 h, while those inoculated with the K88+ astA STb+ strain did not, although diarrhea developed in several piglets. The changes in the blood packed-cell volume and plasma total protein of gnotobiotic piglets inoculated with the LT-positive strains were significantly greater than those of pigs inoculated with the K88 astA/pBR322 strain (P = 0.012, P = 0.002). Immunochemistry image analysis also suggested that LT enhanced bacterial colonization in a gnotobiotic piglet model. This investigation suggested that LT is a major contributor to the virulence of K88+ ETEC and that isogenic constructs are a useful tool for studying the pathogenesis of ETEC infection.

Abstract
The targets of the Structural GenomiX (SGX) bacterial genomics project were proteins conserved in multiple prokaryotic organisms with no obvious sequence homolog in the Protein Data Bank of known structures. The outcome of this work was 80 structures, covering 60 unique sequences and 49 different genes. Experimental phase determination from proteins incorporating Se-Met was carried out for 45 structures with most of the remainder solved by molecular replacement using members of the experimentally phased set as search models. An automated tool was developed to deposit these structures in the Protein Data Bank, along with the associated X-ray diffraction data (including refined experimental phases) and experimentally confirmed sequences. BLAST comparisons of the SGX structures with structures that had appeared in the Protein Data Bank over the intervening 3.5 years since the SGX target list had been compiled identified homologs for 49 of the 60 unique sequences represented by the SGX structures. This result indicates that, for bacterial structures that are relatively easy to express, purify, and crystallize, the structural coverage of gene space is proceeding rapidly. More distant sequence-structure relationships between the SGX and PDB structures were investigated using PDB-BLAST and Combinatorial Extension (CE). Only one structure, SufD, has a truly unique topology compared to all folds in the PDB.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin produced by gram-negative bacteria, inhibits gonadotrophin secretion and ovulation in female mammals. The present study was undertaken to examine whether gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-synthesising neurones in the medial preoptic area (mPOA) may be involved in the inhibition by LPS of progesterone-induced luteinising hormone (LH) surge in ovariectomised oestrogen-primed rats. An intravenous injection of LPS (10 microg) at noon significantly increased the content of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD67), a GABA-synthesising enzyme, in brain tissues including the mPOA. LPS treatment also significantly increased the number of detectable GAD67-immunoreactive (ir) as well as GABA-ir cells in the mPOA, compared to control rats. The same LPS challenge completely eliminated the steroid-induced LH surge, which was normally induced in control rats in the afternoon. A local injection of muscimol (100 ng), a GABA(A) receptor agonist, into the mPOA also significantly attenuated the LH surge, mimicking the effect of LPS. These results suggest that LPS stimulates GABA synthesis in preoptic neurones, which in turn inhibit the LH surge in female rats. The results also support the hypothesis that diminution of the GABAergic suppressive activity in the mPOA permits the LH surge to be induced.

Abstract
We have recently reported that lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial endotoxin, inhibits steroid-induced as well as naloxone-induced luteinising hormone (LH) secretion in ovariectomised oestrogen-primed rats. In the present study, we examined whether corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) may be involved in the LPS-induced inhibition of LH secretion. Unanaesthetised rats were treated with an intravenous (i.v.) injection of LPS (10 microg) or saline, followed by an i.v. injection of naloxone (20 mg/kg). After sequential blood samples were collected for determination of serum LH concentrations, the brains were fixed and CRF-immunoreactivity was examined histochemically. In control rats receiving saline injections, only a small number of CRF-immunoreactive (ir) cells were found in the parvocellular portion of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), and naloxone significantly increased serum LH concentrations within 10 min. By contrast, in LPS-treated rats, the number of CRF-ir cells was significantly greater than that in control rats, and the effect of naloxone was completely abolished. In a separate experiment, an intracerebroventricular injection of 5 microg CRF inhibited naloxone-induced LH release, mimicking the effect of LPS. These results suggest that LPS stimulates production of CRF in PVN neurones, which in turn inhibits LH secretion without opioidergic mediation.

Abstract
Arginines-containing membrane translocational signals (MTS), such as Tat(47-57) and VP22(267-300), and synthetic arginine-rich peptides have been reported to be efficient carriers for transporting various types of biomolecules into cytoplasmic and nuclear compartments of living cells. Among those arginines-containing MTS, a 9-mer arginine peptide (Arg9) was proved the most economical and efficient. We fused Arg9-peptide to an anti-CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) immunotoxin, PE35/CEA(Fv)/KDEL, at the position between the toxin moiety and the binding moiety. Strong binding and internalization of this fusion protein was observed in all detected cell lines, but little cytotoxicity to the cells that lack the CEA molecules on the cell surface was detected. However, the cytotoxicity besides the binding activity of the fusion protein to specific tumor cells expressing large amount of CEA molecules on the cell surface was improved markedly, indicating that the Arg9-peptide is capable of facilitating the receptor-mediated endocytosis of this immunotoxin, which leads to the increase of the specific cytotoxicity of this immunotoxin.

Abstract
AIM To observe whether there were any intra-species differences between Anopheles minimus from Hainan(H) and Yunnan(Y). METHODS Anopheles minimus were collected from cattle shed on the spot. Each isofemale line was set up in the laboratory. Hybridization experiments were conducted by using forced mating between Anopheles minimus from Hainan and Yunnan, for observing the reproductive ability of F1 hybrids. Ovarian nurse cell polytene chromosomes of F1 hybrid females were examined, to observe any synapsis in different zones of chromosomes. RESULTS No embryo formation was found within the eggs produced by group Y female x H male, the hatching rate was zero. Low hatching rate was shown in other groups with (H female x Y male) F1, except for groups with (H x Y) F1 x Y. Ovarian nurse cell polytene chromosomes from (H x Y) F1 hybrid females showed constant asynapsis at the 29th, 36th and 37th zones in the chromosome 3R, and at the 4th and 6th zones in the chromosome X. CONCLUSION Reproductive isolation did appear in An. minimus from Hainan and Yunnan.

Abstract
Acute immobilization stress suppresses naloxone- and N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-induced, but not gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced, luteinizing hormone (LH) release in ovariectomized oestrogen-primed rats. To explore whether a common mechanism may underlie inhibition of gonadotropin secretion by various stressors, we examined in the present study the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on LH release induced by progesterone, GnRH, naloxone and NMDA. The effect of LPS on Fos expression in GnRH neurones was also examined in association with its effect on steroid-induced LH release. Injection of progesterone (1 mg/rat) at noon induced an LH surge in the afternoon in ovariectomized rats pretreated with oestradiol benzoate. In these rats, the majority of hypothalamic GnRH neurones expressed Fos in the evening. Intravenous (i.v.) administration of LPS (10 micro g/rat) inhibited steroid-induced LH release and also reduced the Fos expression in GnRH neurones. In separate experiments, an i.v. injection of GnRH (50 ng/kg), naloxone (10 mg/kg) or NMDA (20 mg/kg) significantly elevated serum LH concentrations within 10 min. Pretreatment with LPS, which did not affect basal LH release or GnRH-induced LH release, inhibited naloxone-induced and NMDA-induced LH release. These results show that LPS has a suprapituitary site(s) of action to suppress the activity of GnRH neurones in female rats, and suggest that LPS affects the opioid, as well as the excitatory amino acidergic regulation of GnRH neurones. The similarity of effects of LPS and immobilization stress further suggests that a common mechanism is involved in inhibition of GnRH neurones by different stressors.

Abstract
In this paper we study the short-range correlated percolation and the cluster structure of two-dimensional (2D) random packing of binary disks with size ratio lambda in the range of 1-5. A Monte Carlo simulation model is used to generate the configuration of random packing first. Then a from-neighbor-to-neighbor propagation method is used to identify the number and sizes of the clusters. Results show that for lambda=1 the percolation threshold p(c) lies between the square and triangular site percolation thresholds. As lambda increases the percolation threshold p(c) (the area fraction of small disks) decreases. To characterize the cluster structure at the percolation threshold, we scale the cluster size s(c) with the cluster radius R as s(c) proportional, variant R(D). The fractal dimension D obtained lies between 1.86 and 1.88 and is independent of the size ratio lambda. This value is in good agreement with the 2D theoretical fractal dimension which is equal to 91/48.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study some metal elements levels and T lymphocyte subset of the peripheral lymphocytes in patients with nasopharyngeal. METHOD Metal elements in the patients with nasopharyngeal and normal control were detected by the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (Flame SHIMATZV.JAPAN). T lymphocyte subset were detected by the flow cytometry (FCM). RESULT The level of copper was significantly higher and the level of zinc was significantly lower in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinomas than those in normal control group (P < 0.01 and < 0.05 respectively). The number of CD3/CD4 cell in the patients group were less than those in normal group(P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The results of correlative analysis showed that there was a significant correlationship between the number of CD4 cells and levels of copper in peripheral lymphocytes of the patients group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was undertaken to examine whether acupuncture treatment may have a long-term effect on smoking cessation or reduction. METHODS Altogether 46 healthy men and women who reported smoking 20 +/- 6 cigarettes per day (mean +/- SD) volunteered in the study. They were randomly assigned to a test group (TG) or to a control group (CG) in which presumed anti-smoking acupoints were stimulated (TG) or acupuncture was applied to acupoints considered to have no effect on smoking cessation (CG). Before each treatment, after the last one, and 8 months and 5 years after the last one, each subject answered questionnaires about his or her smoking habits and attitudes. Blood samples for measuring variables related to smoking, i.e., serum cotinine and serum thiocyanate, were taken. RESULTS During the treatment period the reported cigarette consumption fell on average by 14 (TG) and 7 (CG) cigarettes per day (P < 0.001). For both groups the reported cigarette consumption rose on average by 5-7 cigarettes during the following 8 months, and there was no systematic change thereafter. Consequently, TG showed a maintained reduction in smoking; no lasting effect was seen for CG. The TG reported that cigarettes tasted worse than before the treatments, and also the desire to smoke fell. For TG the serum concentration of cotinine fell, and the values correlated with the reported smoking. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms that adequate acupuncture treatment may help motivated smokers to reduce their smoking, or even quit smoking completely, and the effect may last for at least 5 years. Acupuncture may affect the subjects' smoking by reducing their taste of tobacco and their desire to smoke. Different acupoints have different effects on smoking cessation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes between a single stage head-up tilt table test (HUT) with infusion of 3.44 microg/kg per hour of nitroglycerin and a conventional multistage test with infusion of nitroglycerin from 1.72 microg/kg per hour to 5.16 microg/kg per hour in five successive stages. Thirty-seven patients with recurrent syncope underwent both tests in a prospective, randomized, crossoverfashion. During single stage HUT, a positive response occurred in 24 (64.9%) patients with unexplained syncope, an exaggerated response occurred in 3 (8.1%), a negative response in 7 (18.9%), and drug intolerance in 3 (8.1%). During the multistage HUT, these percentages were 62.2%, 16.2%, 13.5%, and 8.1%, respectively. Twenty healthy control subjects were involved in both tests, One of the control subjects had a positive response to single stage HUT, and two (10%) patients to multistage HUT. The duration of the test in single stage HUT was shorter than that in multistage HUT (8.6 +/- 10.3 vs 38.6 +/- 32.1 minutes, P < 0.01). The results showed that the single stage HUT was a fairly sensitive, specific, and a time-efficient test for provoking neurally mediated syncope.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of human telomerase reverse transcriptase(hTERT) gene antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ASODN) on cisplatin-induced apoptosis in cultured primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. METHODS Cell surviving fraction was determined using the trypan blue dye exclusion assay. Apoptosis was detected by DNA gel electrophoresis and flow cytomertric cell cycle analysis. RESULTS Treatment with cisplatin after 24 hours of exposure of the cells to ASODN significantly reduced the number of viable AML and CML cells. However, there was no difference on AML and CML cells survival between those treated with sense oligodeoxynucleotide (SODN)/cisplatin combination and cisplatin alone. Agarose gel electrophoresis of genomic DNA from the blasts of AML and CML treated with ASODN and cisplatin combination for 72 hours showed typical DNA "ladder", but DNA from AML or CML cells treated with SODN plus cisplatin or cisplatin alone did not. The percentage of apoptotic AML and CML cells treated with cisplatin for 48 or 72 hours after 24 hours of exposure to ASODN (42.68%, 35.72%) was significantly different with that of apoptotic cells treated with SODN plus cisplatin (29.02%, 23.84%) or cisplatin alone (27.53%, 21.02%). CONCLUSION hTERT ASODN could enhance the cisplatin-induced apoptosis of AML and CML cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To exploit the three-dimensional model technique and apply it in the oral and maxillofacial surgery. METHODS Using CT and rapid prototype technique to make three-dimentional model and used it for the therapy of the comminuted zygomatic features, jaw bone asymmetry, defects after tumor removal, and implantations. RESULTS By using three-dimensional models eight patients with comprehensive bone defects had good results. CONCLUSIONS Three-dimensional models can help surgeons in many ways for the therapy of the oral and maxillofacial deformities.

Abstract
There are only a few proteins identified at the cell surface that could directly regulate plant cell wall functions. The cell wall-associated kinases (WAKs) of angiosperms physically link the plasma membrane to the carbohydrate matrix and are unique in that they have the potential to directly signal cellular events through their cytoplasmic kinase domain. In Arabidopsis there are five WAKs and each has a cytoplasmic serine/threonine protein kinase domain, spans the plasma membrane, and extends a domain into the cell wall. The WAK extracellular domain is variable among the five isoforms, and collectively the family is expressed in most vegetative tissues. WAK1 and WAK2 are the most ubiquitously and abundantly expressed of the five tandemly arrayed genes, and their messages are present in vegetative meristems, junctions of organ types, and areas of cell expansion. They are also induced by pathogen infection and wounding. Recent experiments demonstrate that antisense WAK expression leads to a reduction in WAK protein levels and the loss of cell expansion. A large amount of WAK is covalently linked to pectin, and most WAK that is bound to pectin is also phosphorylated. In addition, one WAK isoform binds to a secreted glycine-rich protein (GRP). The data support a model where WAK is bound to GRP as a phosphorylated kinase, and also binds to pectin. How WAKs are involved in signaling from the pectin extracellular matrix in coordination with GRPs will be key to our understanding of the cell wall's role in cell growth.

Abstract
Beijing's motor vehicle emission inventory based on GIS technology was developed, and used to estimate the contribution rate of different types of vehicles and different areas of vehicles to the total vehicular emissions in the urban area of Beijing. ISCST3, a gaussian dispersion air quality model, was modified at low wind speed condition, and then used to facilitate the study of the spatial and temporal distribution of CO and NOx concentrations in Beijing. It was shown that vehicle source emissions of CO and NOx accounted for 76.8% and 40.2%, respectively, of the total emissions in 1995. The simulation results also showed that emissions from the vehicle sources had contributed 76.5% and 68.4% of the total CO and NOx concentrations in urban atmosphere of Beijing in 1995, and were even higher at down-town and near the arteries. Therefore, strategies for CO and NOx pollution control will of necessity need to focus on the vehicle sources.

Abstract
A new quartz crystal impedance hyaluronidase sensing technique, which is based on the changes in viscosity and density during the enzymatic hydrolysis of chondroitin sulfate (CS) by hyaluronidase (HAse), is established in this paper. The variations of equivalent circuit parameters of the piezoelectric quartz crystal (PQC) during the enzymatic degradation are discussed. The initial hydrolysis rate of CS by HAse is obtained from the changes in viscosity and density with incubation time. Kinetic parameters (the Michaelis constant K(m) and the maximum hydrolysis rate V(max)) of the degradation process are estimated by using a linear method of Lineweaver-Burk plot. K(m) is 2.73 +/- 0.20 mg.ml(-1) and V(max) is -(5.43 +/- 0.38) x 10(-4) kg.m(-2).s(-1/2).min(-1.)

Abstract
Mobile sources are among the largest contributors of four hazardous air pollutants--benzene, 1,3-butadiene, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde--in urban areas. At the same time, federal and state governments are promoting the use of alternative fuel vehicles as a means to curb local air pollution. As yet, the impact of this movement toward alternative fuels with respect to toxic emissions has not been well studied. The purpose of this paper is to compare toxic emissions from vehicles operating on a variety of fuels, including reformulated gasoline (RFG), natural gas, ethanol, methanol, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), and electricity. This study uses a version of Argonne National Laboratory's Greenhouse Gas, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) model, appropriately modified to estimate toxic emissions. The GREET model conducts a total fuel-cycle analysis that calculates emissions from both downstream (e.g., operation of the vehicle) and upstream (e.g., fuel production and distribution) stages of the fuel cycle. We find that almost all of the fuels studied reduce 1,3-butadiene emissions compared with conventional gasoline (CG). However, the use of ethanol in E85 (fuel made with 85% ethanol) or RFG leads to increased acetaldehyde emissions, and the use of methanol, ethanol, and compressed natural gas (CNG) may result in increased formaldehyde emissions. When the modeling results for the four air toxics are considered together with their cancer risk factors, all the fuels and vehicle technologies show air toxic emission reduction benefits.

METHODS Telomerase activity was analyzed by using polymerase chain reaction enzyme-linked immunoassay (PCR-ELISA), expression levels of hTERT protein by immunofluorescence and apoptosis by DNA gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry. RESULTS There was a marked decrease in both the percentage of hTERT protein positive cells and the telomerase activity in ASODN treated cell as compared with that in control and sense oligodeoxynucleotide (SODN)-treated cells; but no difference between the latter two groups. Agarose gel electrophoresis of genomic DNA from K562 cells treated with ASODN and cisplatin combination for 72 h showed typical DNA ladder; neither did DNA from K562 cells treated with SODN plus cisplatin nor cisplatin alone. Apoptosis rates of K562 cells treated with ASODN for 24 h and then with cisplatin for 72 h were significantly increased. There was statistically significant difference in the percentage of apoptotic cells between hTERT ASODN plus cisplatin group and SODN plus cisplatin or cisplatin alone group. CONCLUSION The hTERT gene ASODN could inhibit telomerase activity of K562 cells whereby it enhanced cisplatin-induced apoptosis of the cells.

Abstract
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons are mainly located in the anterior preoptic area (aPOA) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is known as a potent regulator of the GnRH neurons. To examine the development of the GABAergic system in the aPOA, immunocytochemistry of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD(67)) was performed in immature (postnatal d16, d25 and d30) and mature (postnatal 10 weeks) male rats. All immunocytochemical procedures were simultaneously performed. In the lateral part of the aPOA, the detectable number of GAD(67)-immunoreactive cells was small in the d16 group, but significantly increased in the d25, d30 and mature groups, up to 2.7, 4.8 and 5.7 times the number in the d16 group, respectively. In the diagonal band of Broca (DBB), the number was also small in the d16 group, and significantly increased in the d25, d30 and mature groups upto 1.8, 2.2 and 2.8 times the number in the d16 group, respectively. However, in the cingulate cortex, no significant developmental change was observed. These results suggest that the development of the GABAergic system in the lateral aPOA and the DBB occurs before sexual maturation of male rats.

Abstract
As the motor vehicle population in China continues to increase at an annual rate of approximately 15%, air pollution related to vehicular emissions has become the focus of attention, especially in large cities. There is an urgent need to identify the severity of this pollution in China. Based on an investigation into vehicle service characteristics, this study used a series of driving cycle tests of in-use Chinese motor vehicles for their emission factors in laboratories, which indicated that CO and HC emission factors are 5-10 times higher, and NOx 2-5 times higher, than levels in developed countries. The MOBILE5 model was adapted to the Chinese situation and used to calculate the emission of pollutants from motor vehicles. Results show that vehicle emission is concentrated in major cities, such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Motor vehicle emissions contribute a significant proportion of pollutants in those cities, with contribution rates of CO and NOx greater than 80% and 40%, respectively, in Beijing and Guangzhou. Urban air quality is far worse than the national ambient air quality standard. In conclusion, although China has a relatively small number of motor vehicles, most of them are concentrated within metropolitan areas, and their emissions are closely related to urban air pollution problems in large cities.

Abstract
We and others have previously shown that basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2 or bFGF) can be used as a targeting molecule to help carry plasmid DNA into cells when the growth factor molecule is physically coupled to the DNA molecule being delivered. Herein we report our observations on the FGF-mediated uptake of exogenous labeled DNA into cultured cells in a manner that is representative of that which may occur under physiological conditions at sites of wounded tissue. Cellular debris at such sites contains nucleic acid fragments released from dead cells, as well as growth factors such as FGF-2 that function early in the wound repair process. Using a cell culture model designed to mimic the local environment of a wound with respect to the presence of soluble FGF-2 and DNA fragments, we have shown that FGF-2 is able to direct the cellular uptake and nuclear localization of fragments of exogenous DNA via the FGF receptor into intact and healthy cells. Furthermore, we can monitor and quantitate this type of FGF-mediated DNA delivery by using indirect immunofluorescence of bromodeoxyuridine-labeled exogenous DNA. Our results suggest that this type of FGF-mediated DNA fragment uptake could allow for the transduction of viable nearest neighbor cells at sites of injury in vivo. Such a phenomenon may lead to mutational aberrations in the recipient cells and enhance the probability of wound carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Central administration of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) increases cerebral blood flow (CBF) and body temperature, in part, through the production of prostaglandins. In previous studies, the temporal relationship between these effects of IL-1 beta have not been measured. In this study, we hypothesized that the increase in CBF occurs before any change in brain or body temperature and that the cerebrovascular and thermoregulatory effects of IL-1 beta would be attenuated by inhibiting the production of nitric oxide (NO). Adult male rats received 100 ng intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of IL-1 beta, and cortical CBF (cCBF) was measured by laser-Doppler in the contralateral cerebral cortex. A central injection of IL-1 beta caused a rapid increase in cCBF to 133 +/- 12% of baseline within 15 min and to an average of 137 +/- 12% for the remainder of the 3-h experiment. Brain and rectal temperature increased by 0.4 +/- 0.2 and 0.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C, but not until 45 min after IL-1 beta administration. Pretreatment with N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 5 mg/kg iv) completely prevented the changes in cCBF and brain and rectal temperature induced by IL-1 beta. L-Arginine (150 mg/kg iv) partially reversed the effects of L-NAME and resulted in increases in both cCBF and temperature. These findings suggest that the vasodilatory effects of IL-1 beta in the cerebral vasculature are independent of temperature and that NO plays a major role in both the cerebrovascular and thermoregulatory effects of centrally administered IL-1 beta.

Abstract
pX, the hepatitis B virus-encoded transcription coactivator, is involved in viral infection in vivo. pX stimulates the activity of several transcription factors including nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), but the mechanism of activation is poorly understood. The IkappaB kinase complex (IKK) mediates activation of NF-kappaB in response to various extracellular stimuli, including inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 1, human T cell lymphoma virus 1 Tax protein, and tumor promoters like phorbol esters. It is not known whether IKK also mediates activation of NF-kappaB by pX. Here we report that IKK was not essential for activation of NF-kappaB by pX. Expression of pX resulted in the degradation of IkappaBalpha in the absence of its phosphorylation at Ser(32) and Ser(36) residues. Although pX stimulated the activity of cotransfected IKK-beta when it was overexpressed, it failed to activate endogenous IKK. Furthermore, expression of pX stimulated NF-kappaB nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity in IKK-gamma-null fibroblast 5R cells. Our data indicate that pX stimulates NF-kappaB activity through a mechanism that is dependent on IkappaBalpha degradation but not on IKK activation.

Abstract
The dynamical behavior of a two-dimensional map is investigated numerically. A chaoslike behavior, i.e., a nonsmooth distribution of the attractor and seemly sensitive dependence of the motion on initial condition is found as the system state is nonchaotic (both Lyapunov exponents are nonpositive). The key point for this strange behavior is that the mode corresponding to the second negative Lyapunov exponent contains positive local Lyapunov exponent segments. It is argued that this kind of behavior may be typical and easily observed in practical numerical computations and experiments where small noise is inevitable.

Abstract
CENP-G is a novel constitutive centromere-specific protein localized to the kinetochore inner plate and subjacent region. It has been identified as associating specifically with the alpha-1 subfamily of alpha-satellite DNA. In the present work, the localization of CENP-G was compared with that of other CENPs by immunofluorescence and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Studies were carried out on four abnormal human centromeres: two neocentromeres and two inactive centromeres. CENP-G was detected in one of the two inactive centromeres but not in the other that shows a partial deletion of the alphoid DNA. Interestingly, CENP-G is also present in neocentromeres, which lack alphoid DNA sequences, and in the human Y chromosome, which lacks the alpha-1 type of satellite DNA. These data provide further evidence that CENP-G may be an essential factor in centromeric function and that in centromeres lacking the alpha-1 subfamily of alphoid DNA, other DNA sequences are able to bind CENP-G.

Abstract
Dynamic behavior of coupled chaotic oscillators is investigated. A transition from high-dimensional hyperchaos to a generalized periodic splay state is found for extremely weak coupling. Chaotic nature of a single oscillator and mutual resonant interactions are regarded to be responsible for this self-organized ordering. The functional phase distribution of the generalized splay state, which is essentially different from the equal-phase-separation distribution of the conventional splay states, can be well predicted by analyzing a single periodically forced oscillator.

Abstract
An emission inventory based on GIS technology was developed in this study, and used to estimate the spatial distribution of the stationary and mobile sources in the urban area of Beijing. The stationary sources were divided into various types of finer classes depending on different usage, stack height and emission factors. The mobile sources were treated as both line sources and area sources. It was shown that total anthropogenic CO and NOX emissions had reached 1.4 million and 233 thousand tons, respectively, and vehicle sources emissions of CO and NOX accounted for 76.8% and 40.2%, respectively, of the total emissions in 1995. ISCST3, a Gaussian dispersion air quality model, was modified at low wind speed condition, and then used to facilitate the study of source contributions to ambient concentrations of CO and NOX in Beijing. The simulation results showed that emissions from the vehicle sources had contributed 76.5% and 68.4% of the total CO and NOX concentrations in urban atmosphere of Beijing in 1995, and were even higher in the city core (86.3% of the CO and 72.0% of the NOX). Therefore, strategies for CO and NOX pollution control will of necessity need to focus on the vehicle sources.

Abstract
Stem cells, which are clonogenic cells with self-renewal and multilineage differentiation properties, have the potential to replace or repair damaged tissue. We have directly isolated clonogenic human central nervous system stem cells (hCNS-SC) from fresh human fetal brain tissue, using antibodies to cell surface markers and fluorescence-activated cell sorting. These hCNS-SC are phenotypically 5F3 (CD133)(+), 5E12(+), CD34(-), CD45(-), and CD24(-/lo). Single CD133(+) CD34(-) CD45(-) sorted cells initiated neurosphere cultures, and the progeny of clonogenic cells could differentiate into both neurons and glial cells. Single cells from neurosphere cultures initiated from CD133(+) CD34(-) CD45(-) cells were again replated as single cells and were able to reestablish neurosphere cultures, demonstrating the self-renewal potential of this highly enriched population. Upon transplantation into brains of immunodeficient neonatal mice, the sorted/expanded hCNS-SC showed potent engraftment, proliferation, migration, and neural differentiation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of electric stimulation, iontophoresis and electric stimulation with iontophoresis therapy in treating traumatic facial nerve injury. METHODS Fifty rabbits were used. All right buccal branch of facial nerve were injured. The rabbits were randomly divided into five groups and treated by different stimulation pattern: (a) electric stimulation group; (b) iontophoresis group; (c) iontophoresis with electric stimulation group; (d) routine therapy group; (e) control group. The histologic morphology, quantitative indices of nerve fibers and electroneurography(ENoG) indices were analyzed. RESULTS (a) Iontophoresis with Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B12 improved the regeneration of facial nerve myelin sheath. And had the best effect among these groups. (b) Electric stimulation had great effect on axon regeneration. (c) The group of electric stimulation with iontophoresis therapy had the best comprehensive effect on the nerve injury. CONCLUSIONS Both electric stimulation and iontophoresis have good effects on nerve regeneration, when they are used in combination, the best comprehensive effect will be expected.

Abstract
In Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, hyperphosphorylated tau accumulates in affected neuronal and glial cells in the form of paired helical filaments (PHFs). This tau binds antibody AT100, which recognizes the double phosphorylation site (Thr212/Ser214) that is not present in normal biopsy tau. In primary cultures, highly enriched (>98%) in astrocytes of human fetal brain, three polypeptides of 52, 64, and 70 kD showed immunoreactivity with tau antibodies against non-phosphorylated epitopes, accounting for 88, 12, and <1%, respectively, of the total reactivity. All three polypeptides were phosphorylated at the PHF-1 epitope but not at the epitopes Tau-1, 12E8, AT8, and AT100. Treatment of cultures with okadaic acid resulted in apoptosis characterized by the blebbing of the plasma membrane, condensation of nuclear chromatin, and fragmentation of the nucleus. This treatment also resulted in a 3- to 5-fold increase in the content of both tau protein and phosphorylation. The increases were observed in all phosphorylation sites examined, and included the AT100 site. The AT100 site has been proposed to be generated by protein kinase B/Akt and Cdc2. Since okadaic acid can induce an AD-like hyperphosphorylated state of normal tau in primary cultures of human brain cells, a simple cellular model is available permitting study of self-aggregation of tau and phosphorylation events characteristic of neurodegeneration.

Abstract
A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented for the feasibility of using aluminum foams with semiopen cells for sound-absorption applications. The foams are processed via negative-pressure infiltration, using a preform consisting of water-soluble spherical particles. An analytical model is developed to quantify the dependence of pore connectivity on processing parameters, including infiltration pressure, particle size, wetting angle, and surface tension of molten alloy. Normal sound-absorption coefficient and static flow resistance are measured for samples having different porosity, pore size, and pore opening. A theory is developed for idealized semiopen metallic foams, with a regular hexagonal hollow prism having one circular aperture on each of its eight surfaces as the unit cell. The theory is built upon the acoustic impedance of the circular apertures (orifices) and cylindrical cavities due to viscous effects, and the principle of electroacoustic analogy. The predicted sound-absorption coefficients are compared with those measured. To help select processing parameters for producing semiopen metallic foams with desirable sound-absorbing properties, emphasis is placed on revealing the correlation between sound absorption and morphological parameters such as pore size, pore opening, and porosity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of cordyceps sinensis (CS) on the Th1/Th 2 cytokines and recurrence in patients with Condyloma Acuminatum (CA). METHOD Double-antibody sandwich ELISA was used to study the serum level of IL-2 and IL-10 in 34 patients treated with CS(CS group) and 29 patients in control group. The recurrence rate of CA was observed. RESULT After treated with CS, the serum levels of IL-2 and IL-10 significantly increased and decreased respectively (P < 0.05 or 0.01). No significant change occurred in control group. The recurrence times of CA in patients of CS group after electrocauterization were significantly lower than control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION CS might recover the balance of Th1/Th2 cytokines and enhance Th 1 immune response in patients with CA, and reduced the recurrence of CA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The mechanism by which Clostridium difficile toxin A causes actin depolymerization and cell rounding involves toxin internalization and subsequent monoglucosylation of the Rho family of proteins. This study explored toxin internalization and effects on mitochondrial function before cell rounding. METHODS Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells were exposed to toxin A, and mitochondrial localization was assayed by confocal microscopy. Mitochondrial function was measured by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, mitochondrial permeability, and leakage of cytochrome c. RESULTS Confocal microscopy showed toxin A colocalization with the mitochondrial protein GRP 75 at 5 minutes after toxin exposure. Between 5 and 15 minutes, toxin A caused an 80% diminution in cellular ATP levels; cell rounding and Rho glucosylation commenced between 15 and 30 minutes. Toxin A also resulted in reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and a 2-3-fold increase in reactive oxygen radicals. Preincubation of CHO cells with the antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole or butylated hydroxytoluene blocked the toxin A-induced increase in oxygen radicals and diminished cell rounding. Western blot analysis of toxin A-exposed isolated mitochondria showed a direct effect of toxin A on leakage of cytochrome c. CONCLUSIONS The results show that extensive mitochondrial damage occurs within 15 minutes in CHO cells exposed to toxin A. Diminished ATP concentrations and increased oxygen radicals are likely to contribute to cytotoxicity from this bacterial toxin.

Abstract
A novel method, equilibrium dialysis/piezoelectric quartz crystal sensor, applied to determine the binding parameters of diethyldithiocarbamate to human plasma protein is proposed. Based on the investigation of the equilibrium reaction for the binding of drug to protein, the related theoretical equations for this binding were derived. By monitoring the frequency responses of a copper-plated piezoelectric quartz crystal sensor to drug in and out of a dialysis membrane after equilibrium, the binding parameters were determined, i.e., 0.375 micromol g(-1) for beta(p), 6.496 microM for K(dp), 141.99 L mmol(-1) for K(p), and 0.043 for N. These values were in good agreement with reference values. It was found that this method may have application for studying the characteristics of the interaction between other drugs and proteins.

Abstract
SMAD proteins can mediate transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta)-inducible transcriptional responses. Whereas SMAD can recognize specific DNA sequences, it is usually recruited to a promoter through interaction with a DNA-binding partner. In an effort to search for TGF-beta-inducible genes, we used a subtractive screening method and identified human Smad7, which can antagonize TGF-beta signaling and is rapidly up-regulated by TGF-beta. In this report, we show that TGF-beta can stabilize Smad7 mRNA and activate Smad7 transcription. The Smad7 promoter is the first TGF-beta responsive promoter identified in vertebrates that contains the 8-bp palindromic SMAD-binding element (SBE), an optimal binding site previously identified by a PCR-based selection from random oligonucleotides by using recombinant Smad3 and Smad4. We demonstrate that on TGF-beta treatment, endogenous SMAD complex can bind to a Smad7 promoter DNA as short as 14 or 16 bp that contains the 8-bp SBE in gel mobility shift and supershift assays. Our studies provide strong evidence that SMAD proteins can bind to a natural TGF-beta responsive promoter independent of other sequencespecific transcription factors. We further show that, whereas recombinant Smad3 binds to the SBE, endogenous or even transfected Smad3 cannot bind to the SBE in the absence of Smad4. These findings have important implications in the identification of target genes of the TGF-beta/SMAD signaling pathways.

Abstract
This paper presents a calibration and correction method for detector cell gain variations. A key functionality of current CT scanners is to offer variable slice thickness to the user. To provide this capability in multislice volumetric scanners, while minimizing costs, it is necessary to combine the signals of several detector cells in z, when the desired slice thickness is larger than the minimum provided by a single cell. These combined signals are then pre-amplified, digitized, and transmitted to the system for further processing. The process of combining the output of several detector cells with nonuniform gains can introduce numerical errors when the impinging x-ray signal presents a variation along z over the range of combined cells. These numerical errors, which by nature are scan dependent, can lead to artifacts in the reconstructed images, particularly when the numerical errors vary from channel-to-channel (as the filtered-backprojection filter includes a high-pass filtering along the channel direction, within a given slice). A projection data correction algorithm has been developed to subtract the associated numerical errors. It relies on the ability of calibrating the individual cell gains. For effectiveness and data flow reasons, the algorithm works on a single slice basis, without slice-to-slice exchange of information. An initial error vector is calculated by applying a high-pass filter to the projection data. The essence of the algorithm is to correlate that initial error vector, with a calibration vector obtained by applying the same high-pass filter to various z combinations of the cell gains (each combination representing a basis function for a z expansion). The solution of the least-square problem, obtained via singular value decomposition, gives the coefficients of a polynomial expansion of the signal z slope and curvature. From this information, and given the cell gains, the final error vector is calculated and subtracted from the projection data.

Abstract
In this paper, a new self-adaptive model for population growth, i.e. S = exp(alpha ln2(1 + ce-rt) + beta ln(1 + ce-rt) + gamma) was established, which combined Logistic, Smith, Gompertz, Gui-Lawson, Zhang-Logistic and Liu-Logistic models. Estimations with genetic algorithm showed that the new model was more suitable than other models to simulate the actual growth trend of Castanopsis kawakamii population.

Abstract
Based on the data obtrained from 40 Phyllostachys pubescens plots in Jianou City of Fujian Province, the distribution of energy was studied in this paper. The results showed that the energy contained in stems, branches and leaves, and underground parts of P. pubescens ecosystem were 4.2322 x 10(8) kJ.hm-2, 0.9230 x 10(8) kJ.hm-2 and 1.7643 x 10(8) kJ.hm-2, accounting for 61.32%, 13.11% and 25.57% of the total energy respectively.

Abstract
To examine developmental changes in the number of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons activated by an opioid receptor antagonist in female rats, blood sampling and double-labeled immunocytochemistry for Fos and GnRH were performed after the injection of naloxone (NAL) in immature (postnatal d16 and d30) and mature female rats. Three age groups of rats were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde-PB 90 min after the subcutaneous injection of NAL (2.5 mg/kg) or saline. All tissue incubation and staining for double-labeled immunocytochemistry were simultaneously performed. Although no significant developmental change was observed in the total number of GnRH neurons (p0.05), NAL-induced increases in serum luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were much greater in the d16 group than those in the d30 and mature groups (p<0.01). Conversely, Fos-positive GnRH neurons were rarely observed in d16, and some Fos-positive GnRH neurons were observed in the d30 group (p<0.05 vs. saline) and the mature group (p<0.01 vs. saline). These results suggest that opiatergic inhibitory system on GnRH neuron in immature female rats is different from that in mature female rats.
