Abstract
Abstract
Point configurations with cubic inherent symmetry may be generated within certain trigonal space groups. The corresponding limiting-complex relationships were studied. They are caused by a specialization of the axial ratio c/a and require also special coordinate parameters in most cases.
The limiting complexes were derived with the aid of group-subgroup relationships. The material was checked making use of the occurrence of cubic sphere packings within trigonal space groups. The results are presented in a table referring to all lattice complexes with rhombohedral characteristic space groups (two invariant, five univariant, four bivariant, four trivariant) and to one univariant, one bivariant and one trivariant lattice complex with trigonal characteristic space groups.

Abstract
Abstract
After an illustrative example for the ‘symmetry of symmetry’ the group-theoretical concept of normalizers is introduced by a series of definitions. Subsequently, this concept is applied to space groups for which Euclidean and affine normalizers are discussed. Their implications on point configurations, Wyckoff positions and coordinate descriptions of crystal structures are explained. The derivation of all equivalent descriptions of a crystal structure with the aid of the tables of normalizers given in the International Tables for Crystallography, Vol. A is elucidated by several examples.

Abstract
Abstract
17 families of three-periodic minimal surfaces with straight self-intersections have been derived that subdivide R
3 into an infinite number of one-periodic 'tubes' and/or finite 'polyhedra'. Their Euler characteristics vary between -3 and -18. Ten of these families show non-orientable minimal surfaces. They subdivide R
3 either into congruent tubes (eight families), into congruent polyhedra, or into two different kinds of congruent polyhedra. The minimal surfaces of seven families are orientable. All of them cause two different kinds of spatial subunits: two kinds of tubes (one family), tubes and polyhedra (three families), or two different kinds of polyhedra (three families).

Abstract
For all tetragonal lattice complexes the limiting complexes with cubic characteristic space-group type have been derived. These limiting complexes are caused by a specialization of the axial ratio c/a. However, they may require in addition special coordinate parameters. The limiting complexes have been determined with the aid of group-subgroup relationships. In order to check the material, the occurrence of cubic sphere packings within tetragonal lattice complexes was used. The results are presented in four separate tables referring to the 4 invariant, the 24 univariant, the 38 bivariant and the 48 trivariant tetragonal lattice complexes.

Abstract
Two patients aged 24 and 64 years presented at our hospital with similar symptoms including bone pain and muscle weakness. Basic laboratory tests and urinary diagnostics, bone densitometry and bone histology revealed severe osteomalacia with renal phosphate wasting. After the exclusion of other causes an extensive tumor search was performed due to suspected tumor-induced osteomalacia. In one patient a mesenchymal tumor was found in the thigh and completely resected. After surgery the patient showed a rapid recovery from osteomalacia. Because the search was unsuccessful in the other patient phosphorus supplementation in combination with calcitriol was started. Despite continuing renal phosphate wasting a significant increase in bone mineral density was observed.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate the application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a contactless imaging technique to analyze vasodynamics in small blood vessels in vivo. The transluminal OCT imaging of vessels avoids micro traumata in the endothelium and circumvents surgical intervention. It can be performed in the intact perfused vessel and provides a new method to measure vascular function and dynamics in vivo. The resolution of 10 mum and the velocity of image acquisition are adequate to detect differences in the inner diameter, the maximal velocity, or the time to half-maximal diameter change of small vessels. We applied this new technology to study the vascular dynamics in small vessels of 6- and 20-week-old C57BL/6 mice in vivo. In addition, we determined by this technique the impact of a high-fat diet for 14 weeks on vascular function in 20-week-old animals. The diameter of the saphenous artery was increased under resting conditions, after vasoconstriction and after vasodilatation in 20-week-old animals on normal chow and high-fat diet, compared to 6-week-old animals. High-fat diet caused a significantly impaired vasoconstriction in the saphenous artery. The maximal velocity of diameter changes of the saphenous artery was determined by time-resolved OCT imaging. A significant reduction of this parameter was found during vasoconstriction in 20-week-old mice on high-fat diet, compared to 6-week-old animals. In conclusion, transluminal optical coherence tomography imaging is a novel and useful technique to analyze the impaired vasodynamics of small arteries in response to high-fat diet in vivo.

Abstract
Development of Pomacea canaliculata from the gastrula stage until the first day after hatching is described. Trochophore embryos are developed after gastrulation, showing the prototroch as a crown of ciliated orange-brownish cells. However, no true veliger embryos are formed, since the prototroch does not fully develop into a velum. Afterward, the connection between the fore- and midgut is permeated and the midgut becomes full of the pink-reddish albumen, which is stored into a central archenteron's lake, from where it is accumulated into the large cells forming the midgut wall ("giant cells"). Electron microscopy of giant cells in late embryos showed that albumen is engulfed by large endocytic vesicles formed between the irregular microvilli at the top of these cells. By the end of intracapsular development, giant cells become gradually replaced by two new epithelial cell types which are similar to those found in the adult midgut gland: the pre-columnar and the pre-pyramidal cells. Pre-columnar cells have inconspicuous basal nuclei and are crowned by stereocilia, between which small endocytic vesicles are formed. Pre-pyramidal cells have large nuclei with 2-3 nucleoli and show a striking development of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The genesis of the three cell lineages (giant, pre-columnar and pre-pyramidal cells) is hypothetically attributed to epithelial streaks that occur at both sides of the midgut since early stages of development.

Abstract
The Mott insulating perovskite KCuF3 is considered the archetype of an orbitally ordered system. By using the local-density approximation+dynamical mean-field theory method, we investigate the mechanism for orbital ordering in this material. We show that the purely electronic Kugel-Khomskii super-exchange mechanism alone leads to a remarkably large transition temperature of T(KK) to approximately 350 K. However, orbital order is experimentally believed to persist to at least 800 K. Thus, Jahn-Teller distortions are essential for stabilizing orbital order at such high temperatures.

Abstract
AIM To find out whether there is an association between parity and obesity, evaluated through body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in Chilean women after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, health risk and gynaeco-obstetric factors. DESIGN Cross-sectional study, using baseline data of the San Francisco Project. SETTING San Francisco de Mostazal, located in the central region of Chile, 6512 Chilean-Hispanic women (Spanish heritage with a variable indigenous component). METHODS A weighted random sample of 508 women who had their first pregnancy inside the primary child-bearing ages. Data were collected between 1997 and 1999. Statistical associations between parity and different anthropometric measurements of adiposity in multiple linear (MLnR) and logistic regression models (MLtR) were evaluated. RESULTS In MLnR a modest parity-related increment in BMI and practically null increment in WC, WHR and WHtR was observed. Covariates that showed a statistically significant association with anthropometric measures of adiposity were age, low education, marital status, employment, smoking, smoking cessation, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, parent's obesity, menarche and fetal macrosomia. Crude odds ratio (OR) showed a strong association between parity and anthropometric markers of obesity. Nevertheless, after adjustments in MLtR models, the association remained only for BMI. All the measures of abdominal obesity related to parous women showed OR smaller than 1 (95% confidence intervals 0.57 to 0.96). CONCLUSIONS Parity modestly influences BMI, but does not seem to be related to WC, WHR and WHtR after controlling by confounders. Parity can increase adiposity but not necessarily following an abdominal pattern.

Abstract
The routine culling of the male offspring of hybrid layer type chickens is met with increasing public disapproval for both ethical and legal reasons. Until now practice-oriented methods for reliable sex diagnosis prior to hatch could not be developed. Molecular genetical analysis of blastodermic cells can be used for sex determination in unincubated eggs; however, knowledge of the precise localization of the germinal disc is crucial for the extraction of a carefully directed cell biopsy. In principle, 3D-X-ray micro computed tomography (3D-CT) has been proven a suitable method to localize the germinal disk in the unincubated egg without damaging the egg shell. No negative effects on embryogenesis and hatching rate of irradiated hatching eggs were established. The pictorial representation of the germinal disk using optical coherence tomography (OCT) failed in the unopened egg. The egg shell formed an impenetrable barrier for the currently available measuring method which utilized near infrared (NIR) wavelength regions. After opening the egg shell, the germinal disk could be visualized without any difficulties. In conclusion, technical possibilities for localization of the germinal disk in the unincubated egg already exist, but regarding technical parameters, the procedures have to be adapted to the specific purpose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rapid-release testing reduces the waiting period for administration of time-sensitive cell-therapy products. Current assay systems are labor intensive and time consuming. The Endosafe portable test system (PTS) is a chromogenic Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) portable endotoxin detection system that provides quantitative results in approximately 15 min. To evaluate Endosafe performance with cell-therapy products, side-by-side testing of traditional LAL systems and the Endosafe system was conducted at the Production Assistance for Cellular Therapies (PACT) facilities and the National Institutes of Health's Department of Transfusion Medicine, USA. METHODS Charles River Laboratories provided each center with a PTS reader and two commercially prepared lyophilized reference standard endotoxin (RSE) vials. All samples tested with the Endosafe system used 0.05-5.0 endotoxin unit/mL (EU/mL) sensitivity cartridges provided by Charles River. Each vial was reconstituted with LAL water and tested in triplicate using the Endosafe and in-house LAL methods. Subsequently, each center tested the endotoxin content of standard dilutions of cell-therapy products, thus creating paired test results for each sample. Additionally, fabricated endotoxin-positive samples containing varying concentrations of endotoxin were prepared and shipped to all centers to perform blinded testing. RESULTS Valid paired results, based on each center's LAL method and the Endosafe system criteria, were analyzed. Endotoxin detection between paired results was equivalent in most cases. DISCUSSION The Endosafe system provided reliable results with products typically produced in cell-therapy manufacturing facilities, and would be an appropriate test on which to base the release of time-sensitive cell-therapy products.

Abstract
People of non-German background still have difficulties obtaining adequate access to the German health care system. Reasons include communication barriers, differences in the concept of disease and low level of education in addition to a frequently difficult social situation and immigration-related stress factors. The majority of the patients consult the family physician first. Taking into consideration the different cultural concepts of disease and immigration-specific stress factors opens new therapeutic options and expands the intercultural competence of the treating physician.

Abstract
Beneficial effects of Ginkgo biloba on peripheral arterial occlusive disease have been repeatedly shown in clinical trials, especially after use of EGb 761, a standardized special extract. Since the underlying mechanisms are widely unknown, we aimed to elucidate the molecular basis on which EGb 761 protects against endothelial dysfunction in vitro and in vivo. Application of therapeutically feasible doses of EGb 761 for 48 h caused endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production by increasing endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) promoter activity and eNOS expression in vitro. Phosphorylation of eNOS at a site typical for Akt (Ser 1177) was acutely enhanced by treatment with EGb 761, as was Akt phosphorylation at Ser 478. Furthermore, the extract caused acute relaxation of isolated aortic rings and NO-dependent reduction of blood pressure in vivo in rats. These influences on eNOS represent a putative molecular basis for the protective cardiovascular properties of EGb 761.

Abstract
All homogeneous sphere packings and all interpenetrating layers of spheres were derived that refer to the 22 orthorhombic bivariant lattice complexes. In total, sphere packings of 90 different types have been found. Only for 47 of these types is the maximal inherent symmetry of their sphere packings orthorhombic. Some examples demonstrate the usefulness of sphere packings for the comparison and description of crystal structures.
