Valence band behaviour of zirconium oxide, Photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy study

In this study X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy were combined to investigate the effect of oxygen incorporation on the valence band behaviour of ZrO_x. The Auger transitions involving valence bands are found to mimic the self-folded density of state measured using Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The valence band once constructed in a sub-oxide form, stays at a fixed energy position despite the change in the stoichiometry. This behaviour is found to be useful in setting a reference for X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy charge correction. The results of the charged corrected spectra were compared to other methods and found to be in great agreement. Finally, a correlation between the core-level binding energy and the structural property of ZrO_x is given.

Spectrum of movement disorders and neurotransmitter abnormalities in paediatric POLG disease

OBJECTIVES

To describe the spectrum of movement disorders and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurotransmitter profiles in paediatric patients with POLG disease.

METHODS

We identified children with genetically confirmed POLG disease, in whom CSF neurotransmitter analysis had been undertaken. Clinical data were collected retrospectively. CSF neurotransmitter levels were compared to both standardised age-related reference ranges and to non-POLG patients presenting with status epilepticus.

RESULTS

Forty-one patients with POLG disease were identified. Almost 50% of the patients had documented evidence of a movement disorder, including non-epileptic myoclonus, choreoathetosis and ataxia. CSF neurotransmitter analysis was undertaken in 15 cases and abnormalities were seen in the majority (87%) of cases tested. In many patients, distinctive patterns were evident, including raised neopterin, homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels.

CONCLUSIONS

Children with POLG mutations can manifest with a wide spectrum of abnormal movements, which are often prominent features of the clinical syndrome. Underlying pathophysiology is probably multifactorial, and aberrant monoamine metabolism is likely to play a role.

Transoid-to-Cisoid Conformation Changes of Single Molecules on Surfaces Triggered by Metal Coordination

Conformational isomers are stereoisomers that can interconvert over low potential barriers by rotation around a single bond. However, such bond rotation is hampered by geometrical constraints when molecules are adsorbed on surfaces. Here, we show that the adsorption of 4,4'-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine molecules on surfaces leads to the appearance of prochiral single molecules on NiO(001) and to enantiopure supramolecular domains on Au(111) surfaces containing the transoid-molecule conformation. Upon additional Fe adatom deposition, molecules undergo a controlled interconversion from a transoid-to-cisoid conformation as a result of coordination of the Fe atoms to the 2,2'-bipyridine moieties. As confirmed by atomic force microscopy images and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, the resulting molecular structures become irreversibly achiral.

Assessment of acute kidney injury in canine parvovirus infection: Comparison of kidney injury biomarkers with routine renal functional parameters

Dogs with naturally occurring canine parvovirus (CPV) infection are at risk of developing acute kidney injury (AKI) due to several factors, including severe dehydration, hypotension and sepsis. Serum creatinine (sCr) and serum urea are insensitive markers for the assessment of early kidney injury. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate potential kidney injury in dogs with CPV infection using both routine renal functional parameters and several kidney injury biomarkers. Twenty-two dogs with CPV infection were prospectively enrolled and compared with eight clinically healthy control dogs. Urinary immunoglobulin G (uIgG) and C-reactive protein (uCRP) were measured to document glomerular injury, whereas urinary retinol-binding protein (uRBP) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) served as markers for tubular injury. These biomarkers were compared to routine renal functional parameters, including sCr, serum urea, urinary protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) and urine specific gravity (USG). Dogs with CPV infection had significantly higher concentrations of uIgG, uCRP, uRBP and uNGAL compared to healthy dogs. In contrast, sCr was significantly lower in dogs with CPV infection compared to controls, while serum urea was not significantly different. UPC and USG were both significantly higher in CPV-infected dogs. This study demonstrated that dogs with CPV infection had evidence of AKI, which remained undetected by the routine functional markers sCr and serum urea, but was revealed by UPC, uIgG, uCRP, uRBP and uNGAL. These results emphasize the added value of novel urinary kidney injury biomarkers to detect canine patients at risk of developing AKI.

Variability of serum concentrations of cystatin C and urinary retinol-binding protein, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, immunoglobulin G, and C-reactive protein in dogs

Background

Markers of kidney dysfunction and damage have potential to detect chronic kidney disease (CKD) in early stages. However, data on long‐term variation of these markers in healthy dogs is lacking and is crucial for the interpretation of results.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To determine temporal variations of serum cystatin C (sCysC) and urinary retinol‐binding protein (uRBP), neutrophil gelatinase‐associated lipocalin (uNGAL), immunoglobulin G (uIgG), and C‐reactive protein (uCRP) in healthy dogs.

Animals

Eight clinically healthy adult Beagles were evaluated.

Methods

Longitudinal observational study. Serum cystatin C was determined by particle‐enhanced nephelometric immunoassay. Urinary retinol‐binding protein, uNGAL, uIgG and uCRP were determined by ELISA and concentrations were indexed to urinary creatinine. Within‐ and between‐dog variance components (VC) and within‐dog coefficients of variation (CV) were determined from blood and urine collected at eight time points over 1.5 years.

Results

Urinary C‐reactive protein (uCRP) concentrations were consistently below the detection limit (5.28 ng/mL). Mean ± within‐dog standard deviation for sCysC, uRBP/c, uNGAL/c and uIgG/c was 0.15 ± 0.01 mg/L, 0.09 ± 0.03 mg/g, 2.32 ± 2.03 μg/g and 12.47 ± 10.98 mg/g, respectively. Within‐dog CV for sCysC, uRBP/c, uNGAL/c and uIgG/c was 8.1%, 33.7%, 87.2% and 88.1%, respectively.

Conclusions and clinical importance

Serum cystatin C, uRBP/c, uNGAL/c and uIgG/c exhibit a wide range of long‐term within‐dog variability. Researchers and veterinarians might need to take this into account when interpreting their results. To assess their diagnostic and predictive ability, future studies need to establish reference ranges for healthy dogs and dogs with CKD.

Potential therapeutic application of bacteriophages and phage-derived endolysins as alternative treatment of bovine mastitis

The increase in bacterial drug resistance causes major difficulties in the clinical treatment of a growing number of bacterial infections worldwide. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop novel anti-bacterial agents to control these resistant pathogens and to complement the currently used antibiotics. Mastitis is the most prevalent disease impacting dairy cattle, and therefore one of the costliest diseases in the global dairy industry. The excessive use of curative as well as preventive antibiotics in this sector entails a real risk for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, these traditional antimicrobial agents are often ineffective and lead to residues in the milk, which can affect dairy product consumers. As an alternative therapeutic approach, bacteriophages and phage-encoded endolysins have been proposed and are currently (re)investigated as potential antibacterial agents against mastitis.

Diacetylene Linked Anthracene Oligomers Synthesized by One-Shot Homocoupling of Trimethylsilyl on Cu(111)

On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to conjugate small precursor molecules and several reactions have been proposed with the aim to fabricate functional nanostructures on surfaces. Here we present an unforeseen adsorption mode of 9,10-bis((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)anthracene on a Cu(111)surface and the resulting one-shot desilylative homocoupling of of the adsorbate by annealing at 400 K. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that the triple bonds and silicon atoms of the monomer chemically interact with the copper surface. After the oligomerization, we discovered that the anthracene units are linked to each other via buta-1,3-diynediyl fragments while keeping the surface clean. Furthermore, the force measurement revealed the chemical nature at the center of anthracene unit.

Evaluation of the hygienogram scores and related data obtained after cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses in Flanders during the period 2007 to 2014

Cleaning and disinfection (C&D) of poultry houses is an essential aspect in farm hygiene management. Adequate performance of the different steps of a C&D protocol and the use of suitable products are key to prevent and control zoonoses and animal diseases. Hygiene monitoring on total aerobic flora through sampling with agar contact plates at different locations of the poultry house results in a hygienogram score that is used to evaluate the proper execution of C&D.This study analyzed the hygienogram scores of 19,739 poultry flocks in Flanders after C&D. Data relating to the C&D protocol, i.e., year, season, husbandry system, production type, cleaning product, sampler, active components of the disinfectant, disinfection time, disinfection temperature, and disinfection responsible, were collected.The average hygienogram score decreased significantly over time, suggesting a general improvement between 2007 and 2014. Differences in scores were found among the husbandry systems, with the barn/aviary system having a significantly better hygienogram score compared to the floor house, furnished cage, and battery. Significantly better scores also were found when a cleaning product was used in the C&D protocol. Disinfection with a peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide combination or formaldehyde gave the best scores. In addition, C&D protocols using ≥2 different disinfectants showed improved results compared to the use of one single disinfectant. Finally, disinfection applied by a specialist contractor resulted in a better score compared to disinfection by the farmer.In conclusion, analysis of the hygienogram scores and related data allowed identifying several factors, resulting in an improvement, which may reduce the total bacterial load in poultry stables and, consequently, the number of zoonotic and pathogenic micro-organisms.

Recent highlights in nanoscale and mesoscale friction

Friction is the oldest branch of non-equilibrium condensed matter physics and, at the same time, the least established at the fundamental level. A full understanding and control of friction is increasingly recognized to involve all relevant size and time scales. We review here some recent advances on the research focusing of nano- and mesoscale tribology phenomena. These advances are currently pursued in a multifaceted approach starting from the fundamental atomic-scale friction and mechanical control of specific single-asperity combinations, e.g., nanoclusters on layered materials, then scaling up to the meso/microscale of extended, occasionally lubricated, interfaces and driven trapped optical systems, and eventually up to the macroscale. Currently, this "hot" research field is leading to new technological advances in the area of engineering and materials science.

Multiple heteroatom substitution to graphene nanoribbon

Substituting heteroatoms into nanostructured graphene elements, such as graphene nanoribbons, offers the possibility for atomic engineering of electronic properties. To characterize these substitutions, functionalized atomic force microscopy (AFM)-a tool to directly resolve chemical structures-is one of the most promising tools, yet the chemical analysis of heteroatoms has been rarely performed. We synthesized multiple heteroatom-substituted graphene nanoribbons and showed that AFM can directly resolve elemental differences and can be correlated to the van der Waals radii, as well as the modulated local electron density caused by the substitution. This elemental-sensitive measurement takes an important step in the analysis of functionalized two-dimensional carbon materials.

Nanostructuring of an alkali halide surface by low temperature plasma exposure

Templating insulating surfaces at the nanoscale is an interesting prospect for applications that involve the adsorption of molecules or nanoparticles where electronic decoupling of the adsorbed species from the substrate is needed. In this study, we present a method to structure alkali halide surfaces at the nanoscale using a combination of low temperature plasma exposure and annealing, and characterize the surfaces by atomic force microscopy. We find that nanostructurating can be controlled by the duration of the exposure, the atomic mass of the plasma gas and the subsequent step-by-step annealing process. In contrast to previous studies with electron or high energy (few keV) ion irradiation, our approach of employing moderate particle energy (10-15 eV Ar⁺ or He⁺ ions) results in fine nanostructuring at length scales of nanometers and even single atom vacancies.

Anchoring of a dye precursor on NiO(001) studied by non-contact atomic force microscopy

The properties of metal oxides, such as charge-transport mechanisms or optoelectronic characteristics, can be modified by functionalization with organic molecules. This kind of organic/inorganic surface is nowadays highly regarded, in particular, for the design of hybrid devices such as dye-sensitized solar cells. However, a key parameter for optimized interfaces is not only the choice of the compounds but also the properties of adsorption. Here, we investigated the deposition of an organic dye precursor molecule on a NiO(001) single crystal surface by means of non-contact atomic force microscopy at room temperature. Depending on the coverage, single molecules, groups of adsorbates with random or recognizable shapes, or islands of closely packed molecules were identified. Single molecules and self assemblies are resolved with submolecular resolution showing that they are lying flat on the surface in a trans-conformation. Within the limits of our Kelvin probe microscopy setup a charge transfer from NiO to the molecular layer of 0.3 electrons per molecules was observed only in the areas where the molecules are closed packed.

Electrospray deposition of structurally complex molecules revealed by atomic force microscopy

Advances in organic chemistry allow the synthesis of large, complex and highly functionalized organic molecules having potential applications in optoelectronics, molecular electronics and organic solar cells. Their integration into devices as individual components or highly ordered thin-films is of paramount importance to address these future prospects. However, conventional sublimation techniques in vacuum are usually not applicable since large organic compounds are often non-volatile and decompose upon heating. Here, we prove by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, the structural integrity of complex organic molecules deposited onto an Au(111) surface using electrospray ionisation deposition. High resolution AFM measurements with CO-terminated tips unambiguously reveal their successful transfer from solution to the gold surface in ultra-high vacuum without degradation of their chemical structures. Furthermore, the formation of molecular structures from small islands to large and highly-ordered self-assemblies of those fragile molecules is demonstrated, confirming the use of electrospray ionisation to promote also on-surface polymerization reactions of highly functionalized organic compounds, biological molecules or molecular magnets.

A robust AFM-based method for locally measuring the elasticity of samples

Investigation of the local sample elasticity is of high importance in many scientific domains. In 2014, Herruzo et al. published a new method based on frequency-modulation atomic force microscopy to locally determine the elasticity of samples (Nat. Commun.2014, 5, 3126). This method gives evidence for the linearity of the relation between the frequency shift of the cantilever first flexural mode Δf₁ and the square of the frequency shift of the second flexural mode Δf₂². In the present work, we showed that a similar linear relation exists when measuring in contact mode with a certain load F_N and propose a new method for determining the elastic modulus of samples from this relation. The measurements were performed in non-dry air at ambient temperature on three different polymers (polystyrene, polypropylene and linear low-density polyethylene) and a self-assembled monolayer of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) on a silicon oxide substrate perforated with circular holes prepared by polymer blend lithography. For all samples the relation was evidenced by recording Δf₁, Δf₂ and F_N as a function of the Z-displacement curves of the piezoelectric scanner. The occurence of a plastic deformation followed by an elastic deformation is shown and explained. The necessary load F_N for measuring in the elastic domain was assessed for each sample, used for mapping the frequency shifts Δf₁ and Δf₂ and for determining the elastic modulus from Δf₂²/Δf₁. The method was used to give an estimate of the Young's modulus of the FDTS thin film.

Design and Characterization of an Electrically Powered Single Molecule on Gold

The surface diffusion of individual molecules is of paramount importance in self-assembly processes and catalytic processes. However, the fundamental understanding of molecule diffusion peculiarities considering conformations and adsorption sites remain poorly known at the atomic scale. Here, we probe the 4'-(4-tolyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine adsorbed on the Au(111) herringbone structure combining scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Molecules are controllably translated by electrons excitations over the reconstruction, except at elbows acting as pinning centers. Experimental data supported by theoretical calculations show the formation of coordination bonds between the molecule and Au atoms of the surface. Using force spectroscopy, we quantify local variation of the surface potential and the lateral force required to move the molecule. We found an elevation of the diffusion barrier at elbows of the reconstruction of ∼100 meV compared to the rest of the surface.

Stick-Slip Motion of ssDNA over Graphene

We have performed molecular dynamics simulations of nanomanipulation experiments on short single-stranded DNA chains elastically driven on a graphene surface. After a brief transient, reproducible stick-slip cycles are observed on chains made by 10 units of thymine, cytosine, adenine, and guanine. The cycles have the periodicity of the graphene substrate, and take place via an intermediate stage, appearing as a dip in the sawtooth variations of lateral force recorded while the chains are manipulated. Guanine presents remarkable differences from the other bases, since a lower number of nucleotides are prone to stick to the substrate in this case. Nevertheless, the magnitudes of static friction and lateral stiffness are similar for all chains (30 pN and 0.7 N/m per adsorbed nucleotide respectively).

Precise engineering of quantum dot array coupling through their barrier widths

Quantum dots are known to confine electrons within their structure. Whenever they periodically aggregate into arrays and cooperative interactions arise, novel quantum properties suitable for technological applications show up. Control over the potential barriers existing between neighboring quantum dots is therefore essential to alter their mutual crosstalk. Here we show that precise engineering of the barrier width can be experimentally achieved on surfaces by a single atom substitution in a haloaromatic compound, which in turn tunes the confinement properties through the degree of quantum dot intercoupling. We achieved this by generating self-assembled molecular nanoporous networks that confine the two-dimensional electron gas present at the surface. Indeed, these extended arrays form up on bulk surface and thin silver films alike, maintaining their overall interdot coupling. These findings pave the way to reach full control over two-dimensional electron gases by means of self-assembled molecular networks.Arrays of quantum dots can exhibit a variety of quantum properties, being sensitive to their spacing. Here, the authors fine tune interdot coupling using hexagonal molecular networks in which the dots are separated by single or double haloaromatic compounds, structurally identical but for a single atom.
