Abstract
Paclitaxel (PTX) is one of the most effective anticancer agents. In clinical practice, however, high incidences of adverse reactions of the drug, for example, neurotoxicity, myelosuppression, and allergic reactions, have been reported. NK105, a micellar nanoparticle formulation, was developed to overcome these problems and to enhance the antitumour activity of PTX. Via the self-association process, PTX was incorporated into the inner core of the micelle system by physical entrapment through hydrophobic interactions between the drug and the well-designed block copolymers for PTX. NK105 was compared with free PTX with respect to their in vitro cytotoxicity, in vivo antitumour activity, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and neurotoxicity. Consequently, the plasma area under the curve (AUC) values were approximately 90-fold higher for NK105 than for free PTX because the leakage of PTX from normal blood vessels was minimal and its capture by the reticuloendothelial system minimised. Thus, the tumour AUC value was 25-fold higher for NK105 than for free PTX. NK105 showed significantly potent antitumour activity on a human colorectal cancer cell line HT-29 xenograft as compared with PTX (P<0.001) because the enhanced accumulation of the drug in the tumour has occurred, probably followed by its effective and sustained release from micellar nanoparticles. Neurotoxicity was significantly weaker with NK105 than with free PTX. The neurotoxicity of PTX was attenuated by NK105, which was demonstrated by both histopathological (P<0.001) and physiological (P<0.05) methods for the first time. The present study suggests that NK105 warrants a clinical trial for patients with metastatic solid tumours.

Abstract
We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K-K+ and pi(-)pi(+) decays of D0 mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2x10(5) D(*+)-->D0pi(+) (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K-pi(+), K-K+, and pi(-)pi(+), corresponding to 123 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.0992+/-0.0011+/-0.0012, Gamma(D0-->pi(-)pi(+))/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.035 94+/-0.000 54+/-0.000 40, A(CP)(K-K+)=(2.0+/-1.2+/-0.6)%, and A(CP)(pi(-)pi(+))=(1.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the lifetime difference between Bs mass eigenstates. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:101803. Abstract
We present measurements of the lifetimes and polarization amplitudes for B(0)(s)-->J/psiphi and B(0)(d)-->J/psiK(*0) decays. Lifetimes of the heavy and light mass eigenstates in the B(0)(s) system are separately measured for the first time by determining the relative contributions of amplitudes with definite CP as a function of the decay time. Using 203+/-15 B(0)(s) decays we obtain tau(L) = (1.05(+0.16)(-0.13) +/- 0.02) ps and tau(H) = (2.07(+0.58)(-0.46) +/- 0.03) ps. Expressed in terms of the difference DeltaGamma(s) and average Gamma(s), of the decay rates of the two eigenstates, the results are DeltaGamma(s)/Gamma(s) = (65(+25)(-33) +/- 1)% and DeltaGamma(s) = (0.47(+0.19)(-0.24) +/- 0.01) ps(-1).

Search for excited and exotic electrons in the egamma decay channel in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:101802. Abstract
We present a search for excited and exotic electrons (e(*)) decaying to an electron and a photon, both with high transverse momentum. We use 202 pb(-1) of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector. No signal above standard model expectation is seen for associated ee(*) production. We discuss the e(*) sensitivity in the parameter space of the excited electron mass M(e(*)) and the compositeness energy scale Lambda. In the contact interaction model, we exclude 132 GeV/c(2)<M(e(*))<879 GeV/c(2) for Lambda = M(e(*)) at 95% confidence level (C.L.). In the gauge-mediated model, we exclude 126 GeV/c(2) < M(e(*)) < 430 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for the phenomenological coupling f/Lambda approximately 10(-2) GeV-1.

Abstract
We report the first measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for pp collisions at square root[s]=1.96 TeV, based on their decays to electrons and muons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb(-1) recorded with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We test e-mu universality in W decays, and we measure the ratio of leptonic W and Z rates from which the leptonic branching fraction B(W-->lnu) can be extracted as well as an indirect value for the total width of the W and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |V(cs)|.

Abstract
The standard model predictions for Wgamma and Zgamma production are tested using an integrated luminosity of 200 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross sections are measured by selecting leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, and photons with transverse energy ET>7 GeV that are well separated from leptons. The production cross sections and kinematic distributions for the Wgamma and Zgamma data are compared to SM predictions.

Abstract
We examined the effects of ongoing cervical sympathetic trunk (CST) stimulation on the vasoconstrictor responses in the lower lip elicited by electrical stimulation (ES) of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) or CST in anaesthetised cats to determine whether (i) the previously reported suppressive effect of ongoing CST activity on IAN-induced vasoconstriction occurs during not only ipsilateral, but also contralateral CST stimulation; and (ii) a vasoconstriction can be elicited by brief CST stimulation during ongoing stimulation of the contralateral CST. The central lower lip blood vessels are innervated by both left and right CST. The fall in central lip blood flow (LBF) elicited by IAN stimulation alone was reduced in a frequency-dependent manner during concurrent CST stimulation at 0.2-2 Hz, and at the high end of this frequency range was transformed to a rise regardless of whether the CST stimulation was ipsilateral or contralateral to the IAN stimulation. The fall in central LBF elicited by stimulation of one CST was not transformed to a rise by ongoing stimulation of the contralateral CST. Possibly, IAN-evoked orofacial vasoconstriction does not occur under physiological conditions (unlike IAN-evoked vasodilatation) because it is suppressed by the spontaneous sympathetic discharge in CST.

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons decaying to dileptons in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:221802. Abstract
We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H+/-+/-) decaying to dileptons (ll(')) using approximately 240 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll(') mass m(ll('))>80 GeV/c(2) (100 GeV/c(2) for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H+/-+/- production. We set limits on sigma(pp -->H++H---->l(+)l('+)l(-)l('-)) as a function of the mass of the H+/-+/- and the chirality of its couplings. Assuming exclusive same-sign dilepton decays, we derive lower mass limits on H(+/-+/-)(L) of 133, 136, and 115 GeV/c(2) in the ee, mumu, and emu channels, respectively, and a lower mass limit of 113 GeV/c(2) on H(+/-+/-)(R) in the mumu channel, all at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B0-->K+pi(-) with 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. Using 275x10(6) BB pairs we observe a B-->K+/-pi(-/+) signal with 2140+/-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is A(CP)(K+pi(-))=-0.101+/-0.025(stat)+/-0.005(syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+-->K+pi(0) and B+-->pi(+)pi(0). The measured CP violating asymmetries are A(CP)(K+pi(0))=0.04+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))=-0.02+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05<A(CP)(K+pi(0))<0.13 and -0.18<A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))<0.14 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the tt production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197+/-12 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt production cross section of 7.0(+2.4)(-2.1)(stat)+1.6-1.1(syst)+/-0.4(lum) pb.

Cellular prion protein regulates intracellular hydrogen peroxide level and prevents copper-induced apoptosis. Biochem Biophys Res Commun 2004; 323:218-22. Abstract
The function of cellular prion protein (PrPC), which is a copper binding protein, remains unclear. To elucidate the mechanisms in which PrPC is involved in neuroprotection, we compared death signals in prion protein gene-deficient (Prnp-/-) primary cerebellar granular neurons (CGNs) to those with wild-type (WT) CGNs. When copper was exposed to these CGNs, ZrchI, and Rikn Prnp-/- CGNs were more sensitized and underwent apoptotic cell death more readily than WT CGNs. Furthermore, the level of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in WT CGNs increased by copper toxicity, whereas those in ZrchI and Rikn Prnp-/- CGNs did not. These results suggest that PrPC modulates the intracellular H2O2 level as a copper-binding protein to protect CGNs from apoptotic cell death possibly due to inhibiting a Fenton reaction.

Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into J/psipi+pi- and produced in 220 pb(-1) of p p-bar collisions at =1.96 Tesqaure root of sV in the CDF II experiment. We observe 730+/-90 decays. The mass is measured to be 3871.3+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.4(syst) MeV/c2, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. This is in agreement with the recent observation by the Belle Collaboration of the X(3872) meson.

Abstract
We report on a search for B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-) and B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-) decays in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using 171 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The decay rates of these rare processes are sensitive to contributions from physics beyond the standard model. One event survives all our selection requirements, consistent with the background expectation. We derive branching ratio limits of B(B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-))<5.8x10(-7) and B(B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-))<1.5x10(-7) at 90% confidence level.

Hyodo N, Nakamura I, Imawari M. Hepatitis B core antigen stimulates interleukin-10 secretion by both T cells and monocytes from peripheral blood of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Clin Exp Immunol 2004; 135:462-6. Abstract
In chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, immune responses to hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) are weak. Interleukin (IL)-10 is a potent immunosuppressive cytokine which we reported recently to be secreted in response to HBcAg by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with chronic HBV infection or healthy controls. Using an enzyme-linked immunospot assay, we compared the ability of HBcAg to stimulate IL-10 production by PBMC with that of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phytohaemagglutinin-P and hepatitis C virus-derived antigens in 16 patients with chronic HBV infection and six healthy controls. Frequencies of IL-10 spot-forming cells (SFC) in response to HBcAg were comparable to those obtained with LPS in patients with chronic HBV infection. Frequencies of IL-10 SFC in response to HBcAg or to LPS were significantly higher in patients with chronic HBV infection than in healthy controls. IL-10 SFC in response to HBcAg consisted of 26-35% T cells, 62-70% monocytes and less than 1% B cells in patients with chronic HBV infection. Only monocytes contributed to IL-10 production in controls. Frequencies of HBcAg stimulated IL-10 SFC representing T cells and monocytes were significantly higher in patients with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and detectable HBV DNA than in patients with normal ALT and undetectable HBV DNA. The potent ability of HBcAg to stimulate IL-10 production by PBMC may contribute importantly to immune tolerance toward HBV.

Abstract
We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|</=1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0-->K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract
AIMS The inactivation of Bacillus subtilis 168 spores subjected to the combined stress of pH, temperature and sodium chloride in a buffer system was modelled. METHODS AND RESULTS Bacillus subtilis 168 spore suspension in 50 mmol l-1 potassium phosphate buffer was heated in an open system using a block heater. A second order polynomial equation was used to describe the relationship between pH, temperature, sodium chloride concentration and the logarithm of the decimal reduction time (D-value) of the spores. Response surface graphs were constructed to predict the inactivation within the experimental domain. The data obtained were also compared with those reported for B. subtilis in different media and foods included in a large reference-based database of thermal inactivation (ThermoKill Database, TKDB R9100), which was constructed in the laboratory. CONCLUSIONS All the variables studied seemed to have a significant effect on the inactivation of B. subtilis 168 spores in potassium phosphate buffer. The coefficient of determination, r2, and an analysis of the residuals from the model indicated the adequacy of the model to predict the inactivation of B. subtilis spores within the range of the experimental variables studied. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The findings of this study will enable a better understanding of the inactivation of B. subtilis spores under the influence of the studied environmental variables. The model can be used by food industries to assess and monitor the shelf life of food products in the event of a chance contamination by B. subtilis spores.

Abstract
We treated a patient of type IV mucopolysaccharidosis (Morquio's disease) with lower leg paresis due to kyphoscoliosis. A 65-year-old woman presented with Morquio's disease. A lateral radiograph demonstrated the classic bullet-shaped vertebrae and a 65 degrees thoraco-lumbar kyphosis. After the age of 60, she suffered from numbness in both lower legs and walking disturbance. Bilateral patellae-tendon reflexes were exaggerated. MRI showed compression of the spinal cord around T12 to L2 with a highlighted area of change inside the spinal cord. Myelography and computed tomography after the myelography showed narrowing of the sub-arachnoidal space and deformation of the spinal cord around the T12 to L2 levels. Severe vertebral osteoporosis made it necessary to first perform posterior correction of the kyphosis and fusion. The curve was stabilised with the Luque method from T7 to L4. Her neurological condition markedly recovered, but 1 year after surgery her neurological condition again began to deteriorate, resulting in walking disturbance. For this reason, anterior decompression and fusion through a lateral thoracotomy was undertaken. Decompression of the spinal cord and a bone graft from the iliac crest were attained. The patient's neurological condition again improved, but not as much as immediately after the first operation.

Abstract
The patient presented with neurofibromatosis and a dystrophic kyphoscoliosis around the cervico-thoracic junction. When the patient was 59 years old, he started to suffer from dyspnea caused by an intrathoracic meningocele in the upper left thoracic cavity. A wide laminectomy from T2 to T5 was performed and the meningocele was resected. Although the dyspnoea disappeared postoperatively, the patient started to neurologically deteriorate. Laminectomy alone caused instability around the apex of the kyphosoliosis and spinal cord compression. Halo cast was applied and brought remarkable recovery of neurologic deficits. This result encouraged us to perform posterior fusion in situ from C3 to L2 with bone graft from the iliac crests and the Luque technique in conjunction with the Isola system. This resulted in the patient being able to walk again. The removal of the posterior element predisposes the patient to unstable postlaminectomy kyphosis and removes valuable bone stock required for posterior spinal fusion. For this reason, spinal fusion should have been conducted during surgery for the patient's meningocele.

Abstract
Transgenic rice ( Oryza sativa cv. Sasanishiki) overexpressing the wasabi defensin gene, a plant defensin effective against the rice blast fungus, was generated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Twenty-two T2 homozygous lines harboring the wasabi defensin gene were challenged by the blast fungus. Transformants exhibited resistance to rice blast at various levels. The inheritance of the resistance over generations was investigated. T3 plants derived from two highly blast-resistant T2 lines (WT14-5 and WT43-5) were challenged with the blast fungus using the press-injured spots method. The average size of disease lesions of the transgenic line WT43-5 was reduced to about half of that of non-transgenic plants. The 5-kDa peptide, corresponding to the processed form of the wasabi defensin, was detected in the total protein fraction extracted from the T3 progeny. Transgenic rice plants overproducing wasabi defensin are expected to possess a durable and wide-spectrum resistance (i.e. field resistance) against various rice blast races.

Abstract
Genetic variation of Japanese rice cultivars were examined. Five of 450 lowland cultivars and another five of 200 upland cultivars were determined as the indica type by using isozyme genotypes and the remainder were of the japonica type. The major characteristics of these indica cultivars, revealed a slender shape of grains, a short apiculus hair length, a positive allele for Ph reaction, and allele-3 for the Pgd1 locus. Three of these indica cultivars showed a non-deletion ORF100, which is essential to the japonica-type plastid. The plastid subtype identity (PS-ID) sequences of these plastids is 6C7A, which is also a japonica-specific repeat unit. Thus, these cultivars were concluded to be naturally generated cytoplasm substituted lines. These plastids were introduced into a indica genetic background from japonica cultivars grown elsewhere. The rest of the indica cultivars revealed a deletion-type ORF100 and plastid subtype 8C8A, both of which are indica-specific. These cultivars carried indica-type allelic constitutions for diagnostic isozyme loci. However, other characters were identical to the cytoplasm-substituted cultivars in Japan. In East and Southeast Asia, cultivars carrying a indica-type nuclear genotype with a japonica-type plastid are restricted to Aus cultivars in the Bengal region. Genetic and historical records suggest that Japanese indica cultivars and the Aus cultivars are closely related. The Aus cultivars acquire necessary genetic constitutions from both indica and japonica cultivars through naturally occurring out-crossing to adapt to a particular cultivation condition in the region. The wide adaptability enabled them to be introduced into a northern region like Japan.

Abstract
Plastid subtype ID (PS-ID) sequences were determined from sequence data based on CA repeats between genes rpl16 and rpl14 in Japanese lowland and upland cultivars. The PS-ID sequences of Japanese rice cultivars showed that there are different maternal origins between lowland and upland cultivars. One subtype, 6C7A, of PS-ID sequences was predominant in all but one Japanese lowland cultivar and carried a combination of the indica-specific subtype 8C8A and japonica-specific nuclear markers for the isozyme genotype. It is probably a nuclear-cytoplasmic recombinant resulting from natural out-crossing and succeeding self-pollination. The origin of the plastid was re-confirmed by the existence of an indica-specific deletion in the plastid genome. In contrast, the Japanese upland cultivars showed two subtypes, 7C6A and 6C7A, of PS-ID sequences. An upland-specific isozyme allele as a nuclear marker was equally predominant in cultivars carrying each subtype. The existence of these particular upland-specific nuclear and cytoplasmic genotypes suggests that the origin of Japanese upland cultivars is different from that of Japanese lowland cultivars. Cultivars carrying the upland-specific nuclear genotype are common in Southeast Asia, but the combination of the upland-specific nuclear and cytoplasmic genotypes which is the same as the Japanese upland predominant type was found in cultivars only in Taiwan and Indonesia. Japanese upland cultivars are closely related to those cultivars.
