Abstract
OBJECTIVE No consensus has been reached regarding whether brain injury related to congenital heart disease (CHD) is caused by infant cardiac surgery and/or prenatal injury resulting from the CHD. We performed this meta-analysis to identify the likely cause of neurodevelopmental delay in CHD patients. METHODS We carried out a literature search without language restriction in December 2013, retrieving records from PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and the World Health Organization trials center, to identify studies applying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) evaluation of brain function before surgery and, in some cases, after surgery (both immediate term and short term postoperatively). The preoperative and postoperative fMRI results were extracted, and meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.1.1 and STATA 11.0, according to the guidelines from the Cochrane review and MOOSE groups. RESULTS The electronic search yielded 937 citations. Full text was retrieved for 15 articles and eight articles (nine studies) were eligible for inclusion: six studies (n = 312 cases) with fMRI analysis before surgery and three (n = 36 cases) with complete perioperative fMRI analysis. The overall average diffusivity of CHD cases was significantly higher than that of controls, with a summarized standard (std) mean difference of 1.39 (95% CI, 0.70-2.08), and the fractional anisotropy was lower in CHD cases, with a summarized mean difference of -1.43 (95% CI, -1.95 to -0.91). N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/choline (Cho) for the whole brain was significantly lower in CHD cases compared with healthy ones, while lactate/Cho was significantly higher in CHD cases. Immediate term postoperatively, significant changes in NAA/creatine and NAA/Cho, relative to preoperative values, were found. However, the difference did not persist at the short-term follow-up. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests that the delay in neurological development in newborns with CHD is due mainly to prenatal injury, and cardiac surgery might lead to mild brain injuries postoperatively, but fMRI shows recovery within a short period.

Abstract
Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare neonatal cholestatic disorder caused by obstruction of extra- and intra-hepatic bile ducts. If untreated, progressive liver cirrhosis will lead to death within 2 years. Early diagnosis and operation improve the outcome significantly. Infants with neonatal hepatitis syndrome (NHS) present similar symptoms, confounding the early diagnosis of BA. The lack of noninvasive diagnostic methods to differentiate BA from NHS greatly delays the surgery of BA infants, thus deteriorating the outcome. Here we performed a metabolomics study in plasma of BA, NHS, and healthy infants using gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Scores plots of orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis clearly separated BA from NHS and healthy infants. Eighteen metabolites were found to be differentially expressed between BA and NHS, among which seven (l-glutamic acid, l-ornithine, l-isoleucine, l-lysine, l-valine, l-tryptophan, and l-serine) were amino acids. The altered amino acids were quantitatively verified using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Ingenuity pathway analysis revealed the network of "Cellular Function and Maintenance, Hepatic System Development and Function, Neurological Disease" was altered most significantly. This study suggests that plasma metabolic profiling has great potential in differentiating BA from NHS, and amino acid metabolism is significantly different between the two diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Cholestatic liver disease is associated with dysregulated expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). However, it remains unknown whether miRNAs are involved in the cholestasis-induced proliferation of cholangiocytes. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that miRNAs modulate cholangiocyte proliferation through effects on the IL-6 pathway, a known regulator of cholangiocyte proliferation. METHODS Expression of IL-6, Foxa2, and phosphorylated signal transducer activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) was investigated in patients with biliary atresia (BA) and in rats subjected to bile duct ligation (BDL). miRNA expression was determined in BA patients and BDL rats, with miRNA array and quantitative real-time PCR. Biological functions of miRNAs were studied using immunoblot, immunohistochemical and proliferation assays. Luciferase reporter assays and Western blots were performed to identify miRNA targets. RESULTS Hepatic interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression was significantly elevated in BA patients and BDL rats, while the expression of miR-124 was dramatically decreased in comparison to controls. Moreover, mRNA levels of STAT3 and IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) were inversely correlated with those of miR-124. Ectopic expression of miR-124 inhibited IL-6-mediated cholangiocyte proliferation in vitro and cholangiocyte hyperplasia in vivo, through a mechanism involving direct targeting of the 3'-untranslated region of STAT3 and IL-6R. We further demonstrated that miR-200 family members were significantly upregulated in cholestasis and inhibited FOXA2 expression in cholangiocytes, which further enhanced the expression of IL-6. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that downregulation of miR-124 and upregulation of miR-200 collaboratively promote bile duct proliferation through the IL-6/STAT3 pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical value of dual-source CT (DSCT) coronary angiography in the diagnosis of coronary artery fistula (CAF) in adults. METHODS A large cohort of 17,548 patients, who underwent DSCT coronary angiography in our hospital between January 2008 and October 2013, were retrospectively reviewed for CAF. The origin, course and drainage site of CAF and coexisting abnormalities were analysed. The conventional angiography results, treatments and follow-up DSCT images were also evaluated. RESULTS A total of 33 CAFs from 17,548 patients were detected. The incidence of CAF was 0.19% by DSCT. CAF originating from the left coronary artery (LCA) was found in 14 (42.4%) patients, from right coronary artery (RCA) in 4 (12.1%) cases and from both LCA and RCA in 15 (45.5%) patients. The pulmonary artery was the most common site of drainage (28/33, 84.8%). 8 of the 33 (24.2%) cases were associated with aneurysms. Six cases were associated with coronary artery atherosclerosis. Four patients underwent conventional angiography. CONCLUSION Coronary-pulmonary artery fistula in adults was found more often than in previous studies. CAF commonly originates from LCA or both LCA and RCA in adults. DSCT is a robust tool for investigating the origin, course and drainage site of CAF and coexistent abnormalities. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE A large adult patient cohort who underwent DSCT angiography was reviewed to assess CAFs. Coronary-pulmonary artery fistula in adults was found more often than in previous studies. CAF was observed to originate from the LCA or both coronary arteries in adults. DSCT could clearly depict the fistula origin, course, drainage site and coexisting abnormalities. Conventional angiography results, treatments and follow-up DSCT images were analysed.

Abstract
Soot formed during the rich combustion of fossil fuels is an undesirable pollutant and health hazard. A newly developed Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the soot formation in a counterflow diffusion flame of ethylene. The simulation uses a new reaction mechanism available in literature, which focuses on modeling the formation of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) up to coronene (C24H12). Nascent soot particles are assumed to form from the collision of eight different PAH molecules. Soot surface growth includes the hydrogen-abstraction-C2H2-addition mechanism and the condensation of the PAHs. Soot coagulation is in the free-molecular regime because particles are small (not more than a hundred nanometer). The coupling between vapor consumption and soot formation is handled by an interpolative moment method. Soot particle diffusion is found negligible throughout the counterflow flame, except for a very narrow region right around the stagnation plane. The soot particle size distribution (PSD) generally exhibits a bimodal shape. The first peak corresponds to a large number of nascent particles, while the second peak results from the competition between nucleation and coagulation. Surface growth affects the PSD quantitatively, but does not change the modality. A comparison with experimental data is also provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been implicated as a key mechanism in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis. The miR-200 family has been shown to inhibit EMT. METHODS Liver fibrosis levels were assessed with Masson's trichrome staining of liver samples obtained from biliary atresia (BA) patients. The expressions of cytokeratin-7 (CK-7) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in the liver sections were detected by immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining. EMTs were induced by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 in human biliary epithelial cells (BECs) in vitro. RESULTS We showed that the EMT-related proteins CK-7 and α-SMA colocalized to the intrahepatic BECs in the liver sections of patients with BA. The level of α-SMA expression was related to liver fibrosis stage in BA. EMT in primary human intrahepatic BECs was induced by TGF-β1 in vitro. miR-200b is one member of the miR-200 family and significantly inhibited TGF-β1-mediated EMT in BECs. CONCLUSION Together, these data suggest that the occurrence of EMT in BECs might contribute to BA fibrosis. miR-200b significantly affects the development and progression of TGF-β1-dependent EMT and fibrosis in vitro.

Abstract
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O104:H4 emerged as an important pathogen when it caused a large outbreak in Germany in 2011. Little is known about the evolutionary history and genomic diversity of the bacterium. The current communication describes a comprehensive analysis of STEC O104:H4 genomes from the 2011 outbreak and other non-outbreak-related isolates. Outbreak-related isolates formed a tight cluster that shared a monophyletic relation with two non-outbreak clusters, suggesting that all three clusters originated from a common ancestor. Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms, seven of which were non-synonymous, distinguished outbreak from non-outbreak isolates. Lineage-specific markers indicated that recent partitions were driven by selective pressures associated with niche adaptation. Based on the results, an evolutionary model for STEC O104:H4 is proposed. Our analysis provides the evolutionary context at population level and describes the emergence of clones with novel properties, which is necessary for developing comprehensive approaches to early warning and control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hypersplenism is a common disease. The conventional treatment is splenectomy and partial splenic embolization; however, both of them have high complication rates and technical defects. Therefore, safer and more effective techniques should be considered for the treatment of hypersplenism. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) may provide an effective and safe way for treatment of hypersplenism. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the safety and efficacy of HIFU in treatment of secondary hypersplenism. METHODS A total of 28 patients who suffered from secondary hypersplenism were treated with HIFU ablation. All patients who underwent HIFU were closely followed-up over a year. MRI scan was performed, and the spleens were observed. Blood counts and liver function tests were also carried out. RESULTS In the follow-up process, the levels of white blood cells and platelets in the blood after HIFU were significantly higher than those before HIFU, liver function also improved after HIFU treatment. In addition, the symptoms were ameliorated significantly or even disappeared. The MRI showed that the ablation area had turned into a non-perfused volume, and after 12 months of HIFU ablation, the ablated area shrank evidently; the sunken spleen formed a lobulated shape and the splenic volume decreased. CONCLUSION HIFU ablation is a safe, effective and non-invasive approach for secondary hypersplenism. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE For the first time we used HIFU ablation to treat secondary hypersplenism. It not only expands indications of HIFU but also provides better choice for the treatment of secondary hypersplenism.

Abstract
An increasing body of evidence suggests that miRNAs are involved in fibrotic process of several organs including heart, lung and kidney. It has been observed recently that aberrant expression of miR-200s are associated with hepatic fibrosis. However, the role and underlying mechanism of miR-200s in hepatic fibrogenesis remains unknown. Here, we investigate the role of miR-200b in the activation of immortalized human hepatic stallate cells (HSCs), LX-2 cells. We firstly found that miR-200b significantly enhanced proliferation and migration of LX-2 cells. Secondly, our findings showed that miR-200b enhanced the phosphorylation of Akt, a downstream effector of phosphatidyl-inositol 3-Kinase (PI3K). FOG2, as the targets of fly miR-8 and human miR-200s, directly binds to p85α and inhibits the activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway. Here, we showed that FOG2 protein levels in LX-2 cells were suppressed significantly by miR-200b mimics. FOG2 knockdown by siRNAs activated the PI3K/Akt signaling, which increased cell growth and migration that mimicked the effect of miR-200b. Conversely, LY294002, a highly selective inhibitor of PI3K, could block phosphorylation of Akt and effect of miR-200b. In addition, we showed that miR-200b enhanced the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), which may increase the migration of LX-2 cells. Finally, our results indicated that the expression of miR-200b was unregulated in the biliary atresia (BA) and associated with liver fibrotic progression. These data suggest a potential mechanism for Akt activation through FOG2 down-regulation by miR-200b that can lead to HSC growth and migration. In view of the putative pathogenic role of miR-200b in HSCs, miR-200b may constitute a potential marker for HSC activation and liver fibrosis progression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the correlation between serum levels of Tumor Associated Materials (TAM) and clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer (EC). PATIENTS AND METHODS The levels of TAM were determined by chemical colorimetry in 100 EC patients and 100 healthy controls. RESULTS Serum TAM levels were significantly higher in patients with esophageal carcinoma than in the control group (p < 0.001). High levels of TAM were associated with tumor size (p = 0.004), tumor depth (p < 0.001), stage (p < 0.001), lymph node metastases (p < 0.001), tumor differentiation (p = 0.001), tumor respectability (p = 0.002) and disease progression (p < 0.001). The poor prognostic outcomes were correlated with an elevated level of TAM (p = 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed patients with increased levels of TAM after operation had an lower overall survival (p < 0.001) and disease-free survival (p < 0.001). In addition, multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses revealed that TAM may be an independent factor affecting the overall survival and disease-free survival (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The detection of TAM could be used to screen for tumor and assess unfavorable prognosis in patients with EC.

Abstract
V L3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements performed on high quality BaVS3 single crystals reveal that the intra-t2g dd excitations close to the elastic peak are suppressed below the metal-insulator transition induced by the Peierls instability. The depletion of electronic states close to the Fermi level represents a direct observation of the opening of a charge gap inside the t2g manifold.

Abstract
We describe the introduction of various multi-drug resistant bacterial strains, including an NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, through a traveller returning from Egypt, where they had been admitted to a private hospital. All family members of the patient were colonised with one or more extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing strains. These findings emphasise the importance of adherence to isolation precautions for returning patients and suggest the need for inclusion of Enterobacteriaceae in admission screening.

Abstract
Background Although a number of proteins and genes relevant to schizophrenia have been identified in recent years, few are known about the exact metabolic pathway involved in this disease. Our previous proteomic study has revealed the energy metabolism abnormality in subchronic MK-801 treated rat, a well-established animal model for schizophrenia. This prompted us to further investigate metabolite levels in the same rat model to better delineate the metabolism dysfunctions and provide insights into the pathology of schizophrenia. Methods Metabolomics, a high-throughput investigatory strategy developed in recent years, can offer comprehensive metabolite-level insights that complement protein and genetic findings. In this study, we employed a nondestructive metabolomic approach (1H-MAS-NMR) to investigate the metabolic traits in cortex and hippocampus of MK-801 treated rats. Multivariate statistics and ingenuity pathways analyses (IPA) were applied in data processing. The result was further integrated with our previous proteomic findings by IPA analysis to obtain a systematic view on our observations. Results Clear distinctions between the MK-801 treated group and the control group in both cortex and hippocampus were found by OPLS-DA models (with R2X = 0.441, Q2Y = 0.413 and R2X = 0.698, Q2Y = 0.677, respectively). The change of a series of metabolites accounted for the separation, such as glutamate, glutamine, citrate and succinate. Most of these metabolites fell in a pathway characterized by down-regulated glutamate synthesis and disturbed Krebs cycle. IPA analysis further confirmed the involvement of energy metabolism abnormality induced by MK-801 treatment. Conclusions Our metabolomics findings reveal systematic changes in pathways of glutamate metabolism and Krebs cycle in the MK-801 treated rats’ cortex and hippocampus, which confirmed and improved our previous proteomic observation and served as a valuable reference to the etiology research of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which consists of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic, inflammatory disorder of the gastro-intestinal tract with unknown etiology. Current evidence suggests that intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) is prominently linked to the pathogenesis of IBD. Therefore, maintaining the intact of epithelium has potential roles in improving pathophysiology and clinical outcomes of IBD. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) act as post-transcriptional gene regulators and regulate many biological processes, including embryonal development, cell differentiation, apoptosis and proliferation. In this study, we found that miR-200b decreased significantly in inflamed mucosa of IBD, especially for UC, when compared with their adjacent normal tissue. Simultaneously, we also found that the genes of E-cadherin and cyclin D1 were reduced significantly and correlated positively to the miR-200b. In addition, the upregulation of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) was inversely correlated to the miR-200b in IBD. To investigate the possible roles of miR-200b in IECs maintaining, we used TGF-β1 to induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in IEC-6 initially. After sustained over-expressing miR-200b in IEC-6, the EMT was inhibited significantly that was characterized by downregulation of vimentin and upregulation of E-cadherin. Furthermore, we found that miR-200b enhanced E-cadherin expression through targeting of ZEB1, which encode transcriptional repressors of E-cadherin. SMAD2 was found to act as a target of miR-200b with direct evidence that miR-200b binding to the 3′ UTR of SAMD2 and the ability of miR-200b to repress SMAD2 protein expression. With SMAD2 depletion, the expression of vimentin decreased correspondingly, which suggested miR-200b might reduce vimentin through regulating the SMAD2. With endogenous over-expression of miR-200b, the proliferation of IEC-6 cells increased significantly by increasing S-phase entry and promoting expression of the protein cyclin D1. Summarily, our study suggested a potential role for mir-200b in maintaining intact of intestinal epithelium through inhibiting EMT and promoting proliferation of IECs.

Abstract
Primary, small-cell esophageal carcinoma (SCEC) is a rare but highly malignant tumor. Due to lack of randomized, controlled, prospective studies, there are currently no unified treatment modalities for SCEC. This study retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of different treatments and prognostic factors that influence overall survival in patients with limited-stage SCEC. The study included 106 patients pathologically diagnosed with limited-stage SCEC at Huai'an First People's Hospital, Nanjing Medical University (Huai'an, China), between 1998 and 2007. There were 66 males and 40 females, with a median age of 58 years (range: 45-77 years). Fourteen patients received surgery alone, 42 received surgery and postoperative chemotherapy, 11 received radiotherapy alone, and 39 received concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Combined modality treatment with and without chemotherapy yielded 5-year survival rates (5YSRs) of 27.2% and 0%, respectively. Associated median survival times were 22 months and 11 months, respectively, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.42-3.73, P = 0.001). Among patients treated with surgery plus postoperative chemotherapy or with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, the 5YSRs were 31.0% and 23.1%, respectively. Median survival times were 26 months and 18 months, with an HR of 1.25 (95% CI: 0.75-2.09, P = 0.725). Multivariate survival analysis using Cox regression model showed that chemotherapy was a positive independent prognostic factor for SCEC (HR 2.92, 95% CI: 1.25-6.80). Chemotherapy-based combined modality treatment appears to increase the long-term survival of patients with limited-stage SCEC. Similar overall survival rates results are achieved with surgery combined with chemotherapy as with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, with chemotherapy being an independent prognostic factor. Randomized, controlled, prospective studies are needed to identify optimal chemotherapy regimens for treating SCEC.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a complex mental disease caused by a combination of serial alterations in genetic and environmental factors. Although the brain is usually considered as the most relevant organ in schizophrenia, accumulated evidence suggests that peripheral tissues also contribute to this disease. In particular, abnormalities of the immune system have been identified in the peripheral blood of schizophrenia patients. To screen the serum proteomic signature of schizophrenia patients, we conducted shotgun proteomic analysis on serum samples of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. High-abundance proteins were eliminated by immunoaffinity before LC-MS/MS analysis. The multivariate statistical test partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to build models for screening out variable importance in the projection (VIP) and 27 proteins were identified as being responsible for discriminating between the proteomic profiles of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. Pathway analysis based on these 27 proteins revealed that complement and coagulation cascades was the most significant pathway. ELISA-based activity analyses indicated that the alternative complement pathway was suppressed in schizophrenia patients. Ingenuity pathways analysis was used to conduct the interaction network of 27 proteins. The network exhibited common features such as, nervous system development and function, humoral immune response and inflammatory response, and highlighted some proteins with important roles in the immune system, such as hub nodes. Our findings indicate dysregulation of the alternative complement pathway in schizophrenia patients. The protein interaction network enhances the interpretation of proteomic data and provides evidence that the immune system may contribute to schizophrenia.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects 0.5-1% of the population worldwide. Current diagnostic methods are based on psychiatric interviews, which are subjective in nature. The lack of disease biomarkers to support objective laboratory tests has been a long-standing bottleneck in the clinical diagnosis and evaluation of schizophrenia. Here we report a global metabolic profiling study involving 112 schizophrenic patients and 110 healthy subjects, who were divided into a training set and a test set, designed to identify metabolite markers. A panel of serum markers consisting of glycerate, eicosenoic acid, β-hydroxybutyrate, pyruvate and cystine was identified as an effective diagnostic tool, achieving an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.945 in the training samples (62 patients and 62 controls) and 0.895 in the test samples (50 patients and 48 controls). Furthermore, a composite panel by the addition of urine β-hydroxybutyrate to the serum panel achieved a more satisfactory accuracy, which reached an AUC of 1 in both the training set and the test set. Multiple fatty acids and ketone bodies were found significantly (P<0.01) elevated in both the serum and urine of patients, suggesting an upregulated fatty acid catabolism, presumably resulting from an insufficiency of glucose supply in the brains of schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
Thymosin β4 (Tβ4), a 5 kDa protein, has been demonstrated to play an important role in a variety of biological activities, such as actin sequestering, cellular motility, migration, inflammation, and damage repair. Recently, several novel findings provided compelling evidence that Tβ4 played a key role in facilitating tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. It has been found that Tβ4 expressed increasingly in a number of metastatic tumors, which was associated with an increased expression of a known angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor. Thus, Tβ4 provided a potential target of opportunity for cancer management, especially for cancer metastasis therapy.

Abstract
Biliary Atresia (BA), a result from inflammatory destruction of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts, is a severe hepatobiliary disorder unique to infancy. Early diagnosis and Kasai operation greatly improve the outcome of BA patients, which encourages the development of early screening methods. Using HPLC coupled tandem mass spectrometry, we detected primary bile acids content in dried blood spots obtained from 8 BA infants, 17 neonatal jaundice and 292 comparison infants at 3–4 days of life. Taurocholate (TC) was significantly elevated in biliary atresia infants (0.98±0.62 µmol/L) compared to neonatal jaundice (0.47±0.30 µmol/L) and comparison infants (0.43±0.40 µmol/L), with p = 0.0231 and p = 0.0016 respectively. The area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for TC to discriminate BA and comparison infants was 0.82 (95% confidence interval: 0.72–0.92). A cutoff of 0.63 µmol/L produced a sensitivity of 79.1% and specificity of 62.5%. The concentrations of total bile acids were also raised significantly in BA compared to comparison infants (6.62±3.89 µmol/L vs 3.81±3.06 µmol/L, p = 0.0162), with the area under ROC curve of 0.75 (95% confidence interval: 0.61–0.89). No significant difference was found between the bile acids of neonatal jaundice and that of comparison infants. The early increase of bile acids indicates the presentation of BA in the immediate newborn period and the possibility of TC as newborn screening marker.

Abstract
Oryzias latipes (Adrianichthyidae), known as Japanese medaka or Japanese killifish, is a small 2-4 cm long fish common in rice paddies in coastal Southeast Asia and is also a popular aquarium fish. It has been widely used as a research model because of its small size and because it is very easy to rear. Alkalinity stress is considered to be one of the major stressors on fish in saline-alkaline water. As very little is known about molecular genetic responses of aquatic organisms to alkalinity stress, we examined genome-wide gene expression profiles of Japanese medaka in response to carbonate alkalinity stress. Adult fish were exposed to freshwater and high carbonate alkaline water in the laboratory. We designed a microarray containing 26,429 genes for measuring gene expression change in the gills of the fish exposed to high carbonate alkalinity stress. Among these genes, 512 were up-regulated and 501 were down-regulated in the gills. These differentially expressed genes can be divided into gene groups using gene ontology, including biological processes, cellular components and molecular function. These gene groups are related to acid-base and ion regulation, cellular stress response, metabolism, immune response, and reproduction processes. Biological pathways including amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, drug metabolism, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, pentose and glucuronate interconversions, glutathione metabolism, and fructose and mannose metabolism were significantly up-regulated. Alkalinity stress stimulates the energy and ion regulation pathways, and it also slows down the pathways related to the immune system and reproduction.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS In this study we aimed to replicate the previously reported association between the glycaemic response to metformin and the SNP rs11212617 at a locus that includes the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene in multiple additional populations. METHODS Incident users of metformin selected from the Diabetes Care System West-Friesland (DCS, n = 929) and the Rotterdam Study (n = 182) from the Netherlands, and the CARDS Trial (n = 254) from the UK were genotyped for rs11212617 and tested for an association with both HbA(1c) reduction and treatment success, defined as the ability to reach the treatment target of an HbA(1c) ≤ 7 % (53 mmol/mol). Finally, a meta-analysis including data from literature was performed. RESULTS In the DCS cohort, we observed an association between rs11212617 genotype and treatment success on metformin (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.03, 1.58, p = 0.028); in the smaller Rotterdam Study cohort, a numerically similar but non-significant trend was observed (OR 1.45, 95% CI 0.87, 2.39, p = 0.15); while in the CARDS cohort there was no significant association. In meta-analyses of these three cohorts separately or combined with the previously published cohorts, rs11212617 genotype is associated with metformin treatment success (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.04, 1.49, p = 0.016 and OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.33, 1.38, p = 7.8 × 10(-6), respectively). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION A gene variant near ATM is significantly associated with metformin treatment response in type 2 diabetic patients from the Netherlands and the UK. This is the first robustly replicated common susceptibility locus found to be associated with metformin treatment response.

Abstract
Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1), the first identified histone demethylase, was belonged to the superfamily of the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent amine oxidases. LSD1 specifically demethylates mono- or dimethylated dimethylated histone H3 lysine4 (H3K4) and H3 lysine 9 (H3K9) via a redox process. Recently evidences showed that LSD1 played an important role in a broad spectrum of biological processes, including cell proliferation, adipogenesis, spermatogenesis, chromosome segregation and embryonic development. Furthermore, LSD1 also could promote progress of tumor by inhibiting the tumor suppressor activity of p53. To date, as a potential drug for discovering anti-tumor drugs, the medical significance of LSD1 inhibitors have been greatly appreciated. Here, we reviewed the remarkable progress being made in understanding of LSD1, mainly on its structure, basic function and medical application in tumor therapy.

Abstract
There is considerable evidence to suggest that aberrations of synapse connectivity contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated glutamate transmission is especially important. Administration of MK-801 ([+]-5-methyl-10, 11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo-[a, d]-cycloheptene-5, 10-iminehydrogenmaleate) induces hypofunction of NMDA receptors in rats, which are widely used as a model for schizophrenia. We investigated synaptosomal proteome expression profiling of the cerebral cortex of MK-801-treated Sprague-Dawley rats using the 2-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis method, and 49 differentially expression proteins were successfully identified using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight/Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry. We carried out a literature search for further confirmation of subsynaptic locations and to explore the relevance to the diseases of differentially expressed proteins. Ingenuity Pathways Analysis (IPA) was used to further examine the underlying relationship between the changed proteins. The network encompassing "cell morphology, cell-to-cell signaling and interaction, nervous system development and function" was found to be significantly altered in the MK-801-treated rats. "Energy metabolism" and "semaphorin signaling in neurons" are the most significant IPA canonical pathways to be affected by MK-801 treatment. Using western blots, we confirmed the differential expression of Camk2a, Crmp2, Crmp5, Dnm1, and Ndufs3 in both synaptosome proteins and total proteins in the cerebral cortex of the rats. Our study identified the change and/or response of the central nervous transmission system under the stress of NMDA hypofunction, underlining the importance of the synaptic function in schizophrenia.

Abstract
AIM To retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of embolotherapy in patients with iatrogenic traumatic uterine arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of all patients who underwent uterine arterial embolization in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2000 and December 2010 was performed. Forty-two patients were diagnosed with a uterine vascular malformation. All patients had obstetric manipulations before. Serial beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) levels were measured to exclude gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. All patients underwent transcatheter embolization of bilateral uterine arteries. The complications, control of haemorrhage, and outcome of subsequent pregnancies were assessed. RESULTS A total of 49 embolization procedures were performed in 42 patients. Seven patients required repeated embolizations for recurrence of bleeding. The technical success rate of embolization was 100%. Bleeding was controlled in 35 of 42 patients (83%) after the first embolization procedures, and bleeding was controlled in another two patients who underwent repeat embolization at a median follow-up of 29 months (range 3 months to 5 years). The overall clinical success rate was 88% (37/42). Thirteen patients subsequently became pregnant and eight of 13 patients had uneventful intrauterine pregnancies carried to term. Seven patients had post-embolization syndrome and no other complication occurred. CONCLUSION Percutaneous embolotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for traumatic AVMs. Future pregnancy is still possible after embolization.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium was grown at salt concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 7.5% in minimal medium with and without added osmoprotectant and in a rich medium. In minimal medium, the cells showed an initial decline period, and consequently the definition of the lag time of the resultant log count curve was revised. The model of Baranyi and Roberts (Int. J. Food Microbiol. 23:277-294, 1994) was modified to take into account the initial decline period, based on the assumption that the log count curve of the total population was the sum of a dying and a surviving-then-growing subpopulation. The lag time was defined as the lag of the surviving subpopulation. It was modeled by means of a parameter quantifying the biochemical work the surviving cells carry out during this phase, the "work to be done." The logarithms of the maximum specific growth rates as a function of the water activity in the three media differed only by additive constants, which gave a theoretical basis for bias factors characterizing the relationships between different media. Models for the lag and the "work to be done" as a function of the water activity showed similar properties, but in rich medium above 5% salt concentrations, the data showed a maximum for this work. An accurate description of the lag time is important to avoid food wastage, which is an issue of increasing significance in the food industry, while maintaining food safety standards.

Abstract
Reported are Laplace barriers consisting of arrayed posts or ridges that impart ∼100 to 1000 s of N/m(2) Laplace pressure for fluid confinement, but the Laplace pressure is also small enough such that the barriers are porous to electrowetting control. As a result, the barriers are able to provide electrowetting flow thresholding and virtual fluid confinement in noncircular fluid geometries. A simple theoretical model for the barriers and experimental demonstrations validate functionality that may be useful for lab-on-chip, display devices, and passive matrix control, to name a few applications.
