Abstract
We demonstrate the existence of the spin-nematic interactions in an easy-plane type antiferromagnet Ba2CoGe2O7 by exploring the magnetic anisotropy and spin dynamics. The combination of neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that the origin of the in-plane anisotropy is an antiferro-type interaction of the spin-nematic operator. The relation between the nematic operator and the electric polarization in the ligand symmetry of this compound is presented. The introduction of the spin-nematic interaction is useful to understand the physics of spin and electric dipole in multiferroic compounds.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review the treatment of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (PRMC). CASE REPORT A 30-year-old woman had a large retroperitoneal mucinous adenocarcinoma treated with conservative laparoscopic surgery. Two years later, she was found to have bilateral ovarian cysts at the time of cesarean section. Since cystectomies revealed mucinous adenocarcinoma, she underwent complete surgical staging and adjuvant chemotherapy at this time. CONCLUSION A rare case of similar cancer in the ovary following treatment for PRMC was described. It is unclear whether the prognosis is improved by oophorectomy. Further cases and long-term follow-up are necessary.

Abstract
Background. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is caused by SFTS virus (SFTSV), a novel bunyavirus reported to be endemic in central and northeastern China. This article describes the first identified patient with SFTS and a retrospective study on SFTS in Japan. Methods. Virologic and pathologic examinations were performed on the patient's samples. Laboratory diagnosis of SFTS was made by isolation/genome amplification and/or the detection of anti-SFTSV immunoglobulin G antibody in sera. Physicians were alerted to the initial diagnosis and asked whether they had previously treated patients with symptoms similar to those of SFTS. Results. A female patient who died in 2012 received a diagnosis of SFTS. Ten additional patients with SFTS were then retrospectively identified. All patients were aged ≥50 years and lived in western Japan. Six cases were fatal. The ratio of males to females was 8:3. SFTSV was isolated from 8 patients. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that all of the Japanese SFTSV isolates formed a genotype independent to those from China. Most patients showed symptoms due to hemorrhage, possibly because of disseminated intravascular coagulation and/or hemophagocytosis. Conclusions. SFTS has been endemic to Japan, and SFTSV has been circulating naturally within the country.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Several studies have examined the clinical significance of metabolic response in primary tumours by [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) in patients with oesophageal cancer who undergo neoadjuvant therapy. The relevance of the metabolic response in lymph nodes is unclear.
Methods
Consecutive patients with oesophageal cancer who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery were studied. 18F-FDG-PET was performed before and 2–3 weeks after completion of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, assessing FDG uptake in primary tumours and lymph nodes considered to be metastatic.
Results
Before therapy, 156 (73·9 per cent) of 211 patients had PET-positive nodes, of whom 89 (57.1 per cent) had no evidence of metabolic activity in these lymph nodes following chemotherapy. There was a significant relationship between post-treatment lymph node status assessed by FDG-PET and numbers of pathologically confirmed metastatic lymph nodes. Patients with post-treatment PET-positive nodes had shorter survival than those without (5-year survival rate 25 versus 62·6 per cent; P < 0·001). There was no difference in survival between patients with PET-positive nodes before but not after therapy and patients who had PET-negative nodes throughout (5-year survival rate 59 versus 71 per cent respectively; P = 0·207). Multivariable analysis identified post-treatment nodal status assessed by FDG-PET and tumour depth as independent prognostic factors.
Conclusion
Identification of PET-positive lymph nodes after completion of chemotherapy is a predictor of poor prognosis of patients with oesophageal cancer scheduled for surgery. FDG-PET lymph node status after neoadjuvant chemotherapy is more important than that before chemotherapy.

Abstract
A 94-year-old female patient presented with anorexia and left axillar lymphadenopathy on admission. Her past history was angina pectoris at 83 years of age and total gastrectomy due to gastric cancer at 87 years. The family history revealed that her son had had a malignant lymphoma, the histopathological diagnosis of which was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A physical examination showed both cervical, axillar, and inguinal lymphadenopathy without tenderness. She had elevated lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R). Whole-body computed tomography confirmed the cervical, axillary, and inguinal lymphadenopathy. Gallium-68 imaging revealed positive accumulation in these superficial lymph nodes. A right inguinal lymph node biopsy showed features of Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative disorder. Immunohistological studies on this lymph node biopsy showed CD20-positive large cells, CD3-positive small cells, and CD30-partly-positive large cells. In situ hybridization showed Epstein-Barr virus-positive, LMP-partly-positive, and EBNA2-negative cells. She refused chemotherapy as her son had died from hematemesis during chemotherapy. She received intravenous hyperalimentation for 1 month after admission. No palpable lymph nodes were identified by physical examination or computed tomography 3 months after admission, and regression of lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, and sIL-2R was observed. She recovered from anorexia and was discharged. She died from pneumonia 10 months later after initial symptoms of anorexia. The autopsy showed no superficial lymphadenopathy.

Abstract
Castrate resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is a disease that is resistant to both hormone therapy and chemotherapy. At present, no curative therapy for CRPC has been established. Therefore, it is necessary to determine a novel molecular target for the development of therapeutic agents. We previously reported that AlkB homolog 3 (ALKBH3) is highly expressed in prostate cancer but not in benign prostatic hyperplasia or in normal prostate epithelium and that the expression levels of ALKBH3 protein are significantly correlated with the hormone-independent state of prostate cancer. Moreover, ALKBH3 regulates the invasion of prostate cancer cells via the regulation of matrix metalloproteinase 9. Here, we show that ALKBH3 gene silencing markedly induces apoptosis in hormone-independent prostate cancer cell line DU145 but not in the normal prostate epithelial cell line PNT2. Moreover, the in vivo tumorigenicity of DU145 cells was significantly inhibited by the administration of ALKBH3 siRNA. Furthermore, the anchorage-independent growth of DU145 cells was inhibited by ALKBH3 knockdown and promoted by ALKBH3 overexpression, significantly. ALKBH3 shRNA-expressing prostate cancer cells formed significantly smaller tumors than those of control shRNA transfectants in an in vivo xenograft model. These findings suggest that ALKBH3 is a promising target molecule for the development of CRPC therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Photosynthesis in marine diatoms is a vital fraction of global primary production empowered by CO(2)-concentrating mechanisms. Acquisition of HCO(3)(-) from seawater is a critical primary step of the CO(2)-concentrating mechanism, allowing marine photoautotrophic eukaryotes to overcome CO(2) limitation in alkaline high-salinity water. However, little is known about molecular mechanisms governing this process. Here, we show the importance of a plasma membrane-type HCO(3)(-) transporter for CO(2) acquisition in a marine diatom. Ten putative solute carrier (SLC) family HCO(3)(-) transporter genes were found in the genome of the marine pennate diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Homologs also exist in marine centric species, Thalassiosira pseudonana, suggesting a general occurrence of SLC transporters in marine diatoms. Seven genes were found to encode putative mammalian-type SLC4 family transporters in P. tricornutum, and three of seven genes were specifically transcribed under low CO(2) conditions. One of these gene products, PtSLC4-2, was localized at the plasmalemma and significantly stimulated both dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) uptake and photosynthesis in P. tricornutum. DIC uptake by PtSLC4-2 was efficiently inhibited by an anion-exchanger inhibitor, 4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner and highly dependent on Na(+) ions at concentrations over 100 mM. These results show that DIC influx into marine diatoms is directly driven at the plasmalemma by a specific HCO(3)(-) transporter with a significant halophilic nature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS A new overtube system has been developed for steady pressure automatically controlled endoscopy (SPACE) in the gastrointestinal tract. The objectives of this study were to validate the feasibility and safety of SPACE in the esophagus, and to evaluate its potential advantages over conventional (manually insufflating) endoscopy in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS This was a multicenter preclinical trial using acute porcine models (n = 20). In Experiment 1 (feasibility/safety study), SPACE was attempted in the esophagus with continuous monitoring of cardiopulmonary parameters and intraluminal pressures in the downstream bowel. Different insufflation pressures were tested to optimize the insufflation condition. Each session was video-recorded and scored by blinded reviewers. In Experiment 2 (randomized trial), esophageal ESD was attempted using either SPACE or conventional endoscopy, and results were compared. RESULTS In Experiment 1, SPACE was performed safely without intraluminal pressure elevation in the downstream bowel. According to video review, SPACE provided more stable, reproducible, and rapid visualization than conventional endoscopy. The insufflation pressure was optimized at 14 mmHg for esophageal SPACE. In Experiment 2, ESD was completed in all animals. The ESD time was significantly shorter with SPACE compared with conventional endoscopy (1326 vs. 1616 seconds; P = 0.009). Responses to questionnaires showed that 94 % - 100 % of participants considered SPACE to provide improved exposure and more uniform tissue tension than conventional endoscopy. Other data were comparable. CONCLUSIONS SPACE is feasible, safe, and potentially effective for complicated endoscopic procedures, such as ESD. SPACE improves and standardizes endoscopic exposure and tissue tension. A clinical study is required to further confirm its safety and clinical effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis represents one of the T-helper (Th)17-mediated autoimmune diseases, and has been shown to be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). It has been reported that some adipokines and Th17-related cytokines are altered in patients with psoriasis. AIM To examine the relationship between levels of adipokines and Th17-related cytokines in the serum of patients with psoriasis compared with healthy controls. METHODS We enrolled 30 patients with psoriasis and 30 normal controls in the study, and used ELISA to measure serum adipokines and Th17-related cytokines. The association between each adipokine and each cytokine was determined using Pearson correlation analysis. Multiple regression analysis using all adipokines and Th17-related cytokines as covariates was also performed. RESULTS Pearson correlation analysis showed a strong positive association between chemerin and resistin levels and between adiponectin and high molecular weight adiponectin in normal controls. By contrast, in patients with psoriasis, resistin levels were significantly positively associated with tumour necrosis factor-α, while there was a strong negative association between retinol binding protein-4 and interleukin (IL)-6 levels. Interestingly, a marked positive correlation between IL-22 and adiponectin was also found in patients with psoriasis. Leptin levels correlated positively with IL-6 in patients with psoriasis, but this did not reach significance. The correlations identified by the multiple regression analyses were almost identical to those from the Pearson analyses. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that distinct interaction between adipokines and Th17 cytokines is involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Abstract
AIMS Global Investigation of therapeutic DEcisions in hepatocellular carcinoma and Of its treatment with sorafeNib (GIDEON), a global, non-interventional, surveillance study, aims to evaluate the safety of sorafenib in all patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) under real-life practice conditions, particularly Child-Pugh B patients, who were not well represented in clinical trials. METHODS Treatment decisions are determined by each physician according to local prescribing guidelines and clinical practice. Patients with uHCC who are candidates for systemic therapy, and for whom a decision has been made to treat with sorafenib, are eligible for inclusion. Demographic data and medical and disease history are recorded at entry. Sorafenib dosing and adverse events (AEs) are collected throughout the study. RESULTS From January 2009 to April 2011, >3000 patients from 39 countries were enrolled. The prespecified first interim analysis was conducted when the initial approximately 500 treated patients had been followed up for ≥4 months; 479 were valid for safety evaluation. Preplanned subgroup analyses indicate differences in patient characteristics, disease aetiology and previous treatments by region. Variation in sorafenib dosing by specialty are also observed; Child-Pugh status did not appear to influence the starting dose of sorafenib. The type and incidence of AEs was consistent with findings from previous clinical studies. AE profiles were comparable between Child-Pugh subgroups. DISCUSSION The GIDEON study is generating a large, robust database from a broad population of patients with uHCC. First interim analyses have shown global and regional differences in patient characteristics, disease aetiology and practice patterns. Subsequent planned analyses will allow further evaluation of early trends.

Abstract
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has become an important target in managing material cycles from the viewpoint of not only waste management and control of environmental pollution but also resource conservation. This study investigated the distribution tendency of trace elements in municipal solid waste (MSW) or incinerator ash, including valuable non-ferrous metals (Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ti, V, W, Zr), precious group metals (PGMs) originated from WEEE (Ag, Au, Pd, Pt), and others (Al, B, Pb, Si), between Fe-rich and Cu-rich metal phases by means of simple thermodynamic calculations. Most of the typical alloying elements for steel (Co, Cr, Mo, Nb, Ni, Si, Ti, V, and W) and Rh were preferentially distributed into the Fe-rich phase. PGMs, such as Au, Ag, and Pd, were enriched in the Cu-rich phase, whereas Pt was almost equally distributed into both phases. Since the primary metallurgical processing of Cu is followed by an electrolysis for refining, and since PGMs in crude copper have been industrially recovered from the resulting anode slime, our results indicated that Ag, Au, and Pd could be effectively recovered from MSW if the Cu-rich phase could be selectively collected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lin28 is a negative regulator of the tumour suppressor microRNA, let-7, suggesting its role in tumourigenesis. However, the clinical significance of Lin28 expression in oesophageal cancer has not been elucidated. METHODS Lin28 and Lin28B expression was examined by immunohistochemistry in 161 tissues from patients with oesophageal cancer who had undergone curative surgery. The relationship between the expressions of Lin28 and Lin28B and various clinicopathological factors was examined. In vitro assays were conducted to determine the role of Lin28 in aggressiveness of oesophageal cancers using oesophageal cancer cell line. RESULTS Lin28 and Lin28B were overexpressed in oesophageal cancer cells compared with non-cancerous epithelial cells, especially in the invasive front. High expression of Lin28 and Lin28B correlated significantly with lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis. High expression of Lin28B expression correlated significantly with low expression of let-7. Multivariate analysis also identified Lin28B expression as an independent prognostic factor. In vitro assays showed that the proliferative and invasive activities were significantly reduced in Lin28B-knockdown cells, compared with control cells. CONCLUSION High expression of Lin28 is associated with poor prognosis and high tumour aggressiveness in oesophageal cancer and these effects are mediated through increased proliferation and invasiveness of oesophageal cancer cells.

Abstract
The Double Chooz experiment presents an indication of reactor electron antineutrino disappearance consistent with neutrino oscillations. An observed-to-predicted ratio of events of 0.944±0.016(stat)±0.040(syst) was obtained in 101 days of running at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France, with two 4.25 GW(th) reactors. The results were obtained from a single 10 m(3) fiducial volume detector located 1050 m from the two reactor cores. The reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 flux measurement after correction for differences in core composition. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a nonzero value of the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter sin(2)2θ(13). Analyzing both the rate of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum, we find sin(2)2θ(13)=0.086±0.041(stat)±0.030(syst), or, at 90% C.L., 0.017<sin(2)2θ(13)<0.16.

Abstract
Using the inelastic neutron scattering technique, we measured the spin wave dispersion over the entire Brillouin zone of room temperature multiferroic BiFeO(3) single crystals with magnetic excitations extending to as high as 72.5 meV. The full spin waves can be explained by a simple Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a nearest-neighbor exchange interaction (J=4.38 meV), a next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction (J'=0.15 meV), and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-like term (D=0.107 meV). This simple Hamiltonian determined, for the first time, for BiFeO(3) provides a fundamental ingredient for understanding the novel magnetic properties of BiFeO(3).

Abstract
Background: Recently, PFTK1 was identified as a member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family; however, its expression and clinical significance in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have not been evaluated. Methods: PFTK1 expression was initially examined by expression microarray in 77 ESCC patients. Using independent samples of 223 patients, PFTK1 expression was evaluated immunohistochemically to assess the relationship between expression and various clinicopathological parameters. The association between PFTK1 and the response to chemotherapy was also investigated in pretreatment samples of 85 patients who received chemotherapy as first treatment. Results: Significant upregulation of PFTK1 expression was noted in ESCC compared with normal epithelium. PFTK1 expression was positive in 51.6% (115 out of 223) of the tumours, but did not correlate with any clinicopathological parameter. The 5-year overall survival rate was poorer in patients positive for PFTK1 (43.6%) than those with negative expression (66.2%, P<0.001). Uni- and multivariate analyses identified PFTK1 as an independent marker of prognosis (RR=2.428, 95% CI=1.615–3.711, P<0.001). Out of 85 biopsy samples, 40 (47.1%) tumours showed PFTK1-positive expression, and the response rate to chemotherapy was significantly lower than PFTK1-negative tumours (27.9% vs 72.1%, P<0.001). Conclusion: PFTK1 is not only useful as a prognostic marker, but also as a predictor of the response to chemotherapy.

Abstract
Expression controls of the carbon acquisition system in marine diatoms in response to environmental factors are an essential issue to understand the changes in marine primary productivity. A pyrenoidal β-carbonic anhydrase, PtCA1, is one of the most important candidates to investigate the control mechanisms of the CO(2) acquisition system in the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. A detailed functional assay was carried out on the putative core regulatory region of the ptca1 promoter using a β-glucuronidase reporter in P. tricornutum cells under changing CO(2) conditions. A set of loss-of-function assays led to the identification of three CO(2)-responsive elements, TGACGT, ACGTCA, and TGACGC, at a region -86 to -42 relative to the transcription start site. Treatment with a cyclic (c)AMP analog, dibutyryl cAMP, revealed these three elements to be under the control of cAMP; thus, we designated them, from 5' to 3', as CO(2)-cAMP-Responsive Element1 (CCRE1), CCRE2, and CCRE3. Because the sequence TGACGT is known to be a typical target of human Activating Transcription Factor6 (ATF6), we searched for genes containing a basic zipper (bZIP) region homologous to that of ATF6 in the genome of P. tricornutum. Gel-shift assays using CCRE pentamers as labeled probes showed that at least one candidate of bZIP proteins, PtbZIP11, bound specifically to CCREs. A series of gain-of-function assays with CCREs fused to a minimal promoter strongly suggested that the alternative combination of CCRE1/2 or CCRE2/3 at proper distances from the minimal promoter is required as a potential target of PtbZIP11 for an effective CO(2) response of the ptca1 gene.

Abstract
Marine diatoms, the major primary producer in ocean environment, are known to take up both CO(2) and HCO(3)(-) in seawater and efficiently concentrate them intracellularly, which enable diatom cells to perform high-affinity photosynthesis under limiting CO(2). However, mechanisms so far proposed for the inorganic carbon acquisition in marine diatoms are significantly diverse despite that physiological studies on this aspect have been done with only limited number of species. There are two major hypotheses about this; that is, they take up and concentrate both CO(2) and HCO(3)(-) as inorganic forms, and efficiently supply CO(2) to Rubisco by an aid of carbonic anhydrases (biophysical CO(2)-concentrating mechanism: CCM); and as the other hypothesis, biochemical conversion of HCO(3)(-) into C(4) compounds may play a major role to supply concentrated CO(2) to Rubisco. At moment however, physiological evidence for these hypotheses were not related well to molecular level evidence. In this study, recent progresses in molecular studies on diatom-carbon-metabolism genes were related to the physiological aspects of carbon acquisition. Furthermore, we discussed the mechanisms regulating CO(2) acquisition systems in response to changes in pCO(2). Recent findings about the participation of cAMP in the signaling pathway of CO(2) concentration strongly suggested the occurrences of mammalian-type-signaling pathways in diatoms to respond to changes in pCO(2). In fact, there were considerable numbers of putative adenylyl cyclases, which may take part in the processes of CO(2) signal capturing.

Abstract
The T2K experiment observes indications of ν(μ) → ν(e) appearance in data accumulated with 1.43×10(20) protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with |Δm(23)(2)| = 2.4×10(-3) eV(2), sin(2)2θ(23) = 1 and sin(2)2θ(13) = 0, the expected number of such events is 1.5±0.3(syst). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7×10(-3), equivalent to 2.5σ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04) < sin(2)2θ(13) < 0.28(0.34) for δ(CP) = 0 and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.

Abstract
We present the experimental realization of nanofiber Bragg grating (NFBG) by drilling periodic nano-grooves on a subwavelength-diameter silica fiber using focused ion beam milling technique. Using such NFBG structures we have realized nanofiber cavity systems. The typical finesse of such nanofiber cavity is F ∼ 20 - 120 and the on-resonance transmission is ∼ 30 - 80%. Moreover the structural symmetry of such NFBGs results in polarization-selective modes in the nanofiber cavity. Due to the strong confinement of the field in the guided mode, such a nanofiber cavity can become a promising workbench for cavity QED.

Abstract
We report on near-GeV electron beam generation from an all-optical cascaded laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA). Electron injection and acceleration are successfully separated and controlled in different LWFA stages by employing two gas cells filled with a He/O2 mixture and pure He gas, respectively. Electrons with a Maxwellian spectrum, generated from the first LWFA assisted by ionization-induced injection, were seeded into the second LWFA with a 3-mm-thick gas cell and accelerated to be a 0.8-GeV quasimonoenergetic electron beam, corresponding to an acceleration gradient of 187 GV/m. The demonstrated scheme paves the way towards the multi-GeV laser accelerators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the start of the 2009 influenza A pandemic (H1N1pdm), the World Health Organization and its member states have gathered information to characterize the clinical severity of H1N1pdm infection and to assist policy makers to determine risk groups for targeted control measures. METHODS AND FINDINGS Data were collected on approximately 70,000 laboratory-confirmed hospitalized H1N1pdm patients, 9,700 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs), and 2,500 deaths reported between 1 April 2009 and 1 January 2010 from 19 countries or administrative regions--Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, the United States, and the United Kingdom--to characterize and compare the distribution of risk factors among H1N1pdm patients at three levels of severity: hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths. The median age of patients increased with severity of disease. The highest per capita risk of hospitalization was among patients <5 y and 5-14 y (relative risk [RR] = 3.3 and 3.2, respectively, compared to the general population), whereas the highest risk of death per capita was in the age groups 50-64 y and ≥65 y (RR = 1.5 and 1.6, respectively, compared to the general population). Similarly, the ratio of H1N1pdm deaths to hospitalizations increased with age and was the highest in the ≥65-y-old age group, indicating that while infection rates have been observed to be very low in the oldest age group, risk of death in those over the age of 64 y who became infected was higher than in younger groups. The proportion of H1N1pdm patients with one or more reported chronic conditions increased with severity (median = 31.1%, 52.3%, and 61.8% of hospitalized, ICU-admitted, and fatal H1N1pdm cases, respectively). With the exception of the risk factors asthma, pregnancy, and obesity, the proportion of patients with each risk factor increased with severity level. For all levels of severity, pregnant women in their third trimester consistently accounted for the majority of the total of pregnant women. Our findings suggest that morbid obesity might be a risk factor for ICU admission and fatal outcome (RR = 36.3). CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that risk factors for severe H1N1pdm infection are similar to those for seasonal influenza, with some notable differences, such as younger age groups and obesity, and reinforce the need to identify and protect groups at highest risk of severe outcomes.
