Abstract
1. The influence of the sympathetic nervous system on urinary kallikrein excretion (UKal) was investigated in conscious rats during stress produced by inserting a silastic catheter through the urethra into the bladder. The effect of this stress on blood glucose (BG), mean arterial pressure (MAP), urinary volume (Uv), urinary sodium (UVNa), and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was also studied. 2. In intact animals stress of 120 min duration produced a non-significant increase of MAP, a significant increase of BG and a decrease of UNa (P less than 0.001 t-test, 9 d.f.), but it did not affect Uv and GFR. In stressed rats UKal was considerably lower (52 milli Amidasic Units [mAU] per 100 g bodyweight, s.e.m. = 5, n = 6) than in control rats (170 mAU per 100 g, s.e.m. = 21, n = 5). The inhibitory effect on UKal was also observed when kallikrein was measured by the kininogenase method. 3. Adrenal medullectomy, performed 1 week before the experiment, suppressed the stress hyperglycaemia but did not affect the reduction of urinary kallikrein or the anti-natriuresis. 4. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of saline also had no effect in the control or in the stressed rats, while i.c.v. d-l-propranolol decreased MAP, suppressed the stress hyperglycaemia and the anti-natriuresis and stimulated UKal, without changes in Uv and GFR. Non-stressed control rats i.c.v. injected with saline excreted considerably less kallikrein than rats i.c.v. injected with d-l-propranolol (control saline: 162, s.e.m. = 14, n = 6; vs control d-l-propranolol: 559, s.e.m. = 20, n = 6). Even in stressed rats this difference was registered (stressed saline: 56, s.e.m. = 8, n = 6; vs stressed d-l-propranolol: 554 mAU per 100 g, s.e.m. = 33, n = 6). 5. Peripheral sympathectomy with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) did not suppress the hyperglycaemic response to stress, but it stimulated UKal. Kallikrein excretion was similar in 6-OHDA stressed (534 mAU per 100 g, s.e.m. = 30, n = 6) than in 6-OHDA control rats (491 mAU per 100 g, s.e.m. = 34, n = 6). No differences were observed on UNa and GFR between control 6-OHDA treated rats and stressed 6-OHDA treated rats. 6. The present results suggest strongly that urinary kallikrein excretion is modulated by sympathetic activity. Results after central beta-adrenergic blockade and peripheral sympathectomy led to the hypothesis that normal sympathetic tone in the kidney inhibits the release of kallikrein into the urine.

Abstract
To characterize the relationship between alcohol use and homicide victimization, we used data from the Los Angeles City Police Department and the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's Office to study 4,950 victims of criminal homicides in Los Angeles in the period 1970-79. Alcohol was detected in the blood of 1,883 (46 per cent) of the 4,092 victims who were tested. In 30 per cent of those tested, the blood alcohol level was greater than or equal to 100 mg/100 ml, the level of legal intoxication in most states. Blood alcohol was present most commonly in victims who were male, young, and Latino, categories where rates have been increasing at an alarming pace. Alcohol was also detected most commonly in victims killed during weekends, when homicides occurred in bars or restaurants, when homicides resulted from physical fights or verbal arguments, when victims were friends or acquaintances of offenders, and when homicides resulted from stabbings. The evidence for alcohol use by homicide victims focuses attention on the need for controlled epidemiologic studies of the role played by alcohol as a risk factor in homicide and on the importance of considering situational variables in developing approaches to homicide prevention.

Abstract
The simple relation between the substrates and products of site-specific recombination raises questions about the control of directionality often observed in this class of DNA transactions. For bacteriophage lambda, viral integration and excision proceed by discrete pathways, and DNA substrates with the intrinsic property of recombining in only one direction can be constructed. These pathways display an asymmetric reliance on a complex array of protein binding sites, and they respond differently to changes in the concentrations of the relevant proteins. The Escherichia coli protein integration host factor (IHF) differentially affects integrative and excisive recombination, thereby influencing directionality. A four- to eightfold increase in intracellular IHF coincides with the transition from exponential to stationary phase; this provides a mechanism for growth phase-dependent regulation of recombination that makes the cellular physiology an intrinsic part of the recombination reaction.

Abstract
Intestinal folacin absorption and mucosal conjugase activities were assessed in healthy male elderly (65-83 years) and young (20-29 years) human subjects. Luminal disappearance as measured simultaneously from the perfused jejunum of 3 mumol of both [3H]pteroylmonoglutamate [( 3H]PG-1) and pteroyl-[14C]glutamyl-hexaglutamate [( 14C]PG-7) as well as the urinary recovery of each isotope and mucosal conjugase activities were compared. Luminal disappearance of either [3H]PG-1 or [14C]PG-7 was not different for the two age groups (P greater than 0.05). The average (mean +/- SD) disappearance of [3H]PG-1 was 63 +/- 12% in the elderly and 67 +/- 6% in the young groups. In contrast, the disappearance of [14C]PG-7 averaged 51 +/- 6% in the elderly and 48 +/- 3% in the young group. Urinary recovery (percent in 48 hours) was not different for either isotope when the two age groups were compared (P greater than 0.05). The urinary recovery of 3H averaged 60 +/- 21% in the elderly and 59 +/- 13% in the young in contrast to 35 +/- 22% and 35 +/- 7% for 14C recovery in the elderly and young groups, respectively. Folacin conjugase activities measured at pH 6.5 and at pH 4.5 were not different between the groups (P greater than 0.05). The findings indicate that intestinal absorption of folacin and activity of folacin conjugases are not affected by the aging process.

Abstract
A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay was developed for the precursor-specific peptide segment located at the amino end of bovine type III procollagen. Human material showed high cross-reactivity in this assay. Two forms of human procollagen peptides were detected in body fluids. The larger peptide (45K) was found in serum and ascites, and resembled the whole precursor-specific segment which is presumably released from human type III procollagen by a single enzymatic cleavage. The smaller peptide (10K) was found mainly in urine indicating that further degradation of circulating procollagen peptides is required prior to their passage through the kidney. Compared to peptide concentrations in normal human serum two to twenty-fold increases were observed in all patients with alcoholic liver disease, in fifteen of seventeen patients with acute hepatitis, and in ten of fourteen patients with chronic active hepatitis. Much higher levels were detected in ascites fluid. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases showed far smaller elevations of the serum peptide. In alcoholic liver disease peptide levels correlated well with inflammation and necrosis observed in liver biopsies, but not with other laboratory parameters.
